A Piece of My Heart Chapter 28 A Wedding Is Made

Latrice watches her friend pace around the bride's room. She is ready. The gown, low cut with lace covering her chest. Beautiful. Her curls free and covered by a lace vail. Her face radiant with just a hint of makeup. Her flush is natural, no blush needed.

“It is really okay girl. You are so lovely. Julian is a blessed man.”

“Thank you. I am just..”

“Get it really. It will be great. Just a few words and rings and you will be married.”

“Right. Married. It isn't the ceremony.”

“Oh,” her friend takes her hand. “I see.”

“We have talked about it. A lot. We know the odds. Discussed the risks. I want to marry him. Want to be his wife, Reilly’s mommy. I just don't want to leave them!”

“You are here today. Today is all that is promised to any of us not just heart transplant recipients. You live today, tomorrow, and every day after. That is all you can do.”

“Right.”

“You ready to do this girl.”

“I have been ready for a long time.”

Her dad, Bill, enters. “My Beth! My beautiful Elizabeth. A bride!”

“I know daddy. Don't make me cry.” He pulls his tears in as he pulls her into his arms.

“Now don't be scrounging her dress either.” Latrice says.

“Sorry. Beth you are just so…”

“Daddy I never thought..”

“I am so happy and proud. Julian he is a good man. Perfect for you. And that Reilly. He and Noah are so precious. Our grandbabies.” Sonya and Levi's son, Noah Gene, was now a year old. He and 18th month old Reilly became fast friends. They are sharing ring bearer duties.

“It is time.” Latrice, her maid of honor, informs them. She is walking down the aisle with Levi. They follow Donna and Shawn. Sonya will direct the toddlers down while scattering flowers.

She takes her daddy's arm. He holds tight to it. “Must I give you away?”

“You aren’t. I will always be your little girl. Just a wife too. And mommy.”

He smiles through his tears. They walk to the door and wait. She sees her family head down the aisle but can't see Julian from this angle. It is okay. She wants to be surprised.

“Elisabeth, I know you have doubts and worries. I know you hesitated to do this. I want to tell you, I am glad you did. God didn't save you for you to live a half life. You were meet to be Mrs. Kern. Meant to be Julian’s wife and Reilly's mommy.”

“Thank you daddy.” The music changes and they step out. She losses her breath when she sees him. So handsome in his tux. His eyes reflect equal amazement.

“Who gives this woman to be married to this man?”

“Her mom and I do?” She meets her mom's eyes shiny with pride. She holds Noah and sits beside her mother-in-law, Julia, holding Reilly. Her hand is placed in Julian's.

They are saying their own vowes.

“My Beth, there was something powerful between us from the start. I thought I could never love again, allow myself to be that vulnerable. But, you were irresistible. Reilly and I fell in love with you together. You hold my soul in your hands. I know the future is uncertain but every moment of it, I want to spend with you. I love you so very much.”

“Julian, love wasn't something I ever thought to experience. I never thought, after a second chance on life that I would be so blessed as to find the man, the family, that completes me. I was scared, am scared, but as long as you hold my hand, I know I can handle anything. Thank you Julian, for allowing me into your life, Reilly's life. For being exactly who I needed. I promise to honor Iris' memory by being the wife and mommy she can no longer be. I love you Julian.”

The rings are slipped on and they are married. They kiss, tasting each others tears.

Our Last Ounce Of Strength

Brielle and Julian are visiting from Tel Aviv, via London. When they were in London, they felt ill and got tested. Both of them were negative. They arrived a few nights ago and went straight to Vail. There, they stayed with their friend John, in his family’s vacation home. After a few days of rest, they came to Denver and got a Covid -19 test. Before results were available, they visited other friends here in Boulder.

The day before yesterday, Brielle came over and visited us on our back deck, socially distanced. Yesterday, Julian came along too, and we all visited and ate at a distance. It felt so good to see them and so odd not to be able to hug, cook in the kitchen together and visit the way we have always done.

But then, their test results came back – he negative and she positive. So, they have now decamped to a hotel, with adjoining rooms. Each of them got tested again and they are waiting for their third set of results. Jerry, Sandra and I, along with Julian’s parents all went and got tested. Jerry and I had negative results and we are waiting for Sandra’s results.

The problem is that we can have false negative tests because we tested soon after we were exposed. Sometimes after a negative test result, the virus builds up in your system (according to MIT’s website) and then you can have a viral load such that you test positive. So, we are waiting to see if anyone gets sick.

In the midst of all this, I got the news I had been dreading, that Ruth Bader Ginsburg had died. She was a particular icon and champion of women’s rights for me, an example of courage and determination. When I was trying to go to law school and run a business and substituting in Superior Court on death penalty cases, I looked to her for an example of someone who could, through sheer will, succeed at changing the laws and especially the sexist paradigm that existed. I thought if she could do it, I could. But I came nowhere close.

My neighbor came over last night and stood at the end of the driveway and cried because of Justice Ginsburg’s death. She kept saying to me, “Please tell me there is hope.” I felt badly not being able to hold her or to tell her that there was in fact, hope.

I wept for the loss to me and more importantly, to our country. I don’t know what catastrophe is next – a meteorite? I do know that RBG would want us to keep fighting for justice to our last ounce of strength. I guess that is what we will have to do.

One day something will enter it, feel lonely … and leave again.’ The quote, of course, is referring to Walter Paisley, the character that eventually became the alter ego of the late, great Dick Miller. Join this episode’s Grue Crew - Chad Hunt, Whitney Collazo, Joseph Perry, and Jeff Mohr - as they tour the Roger Corman/Dick Miller collaboration on display in the art gallery known as A Bucket of Blood.

When news of Dick Miller’s death on 30 January 2019 reached the Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue Crew, they knew one of their next films had to be A Bucket of Blood, Roger Corman’s first attempt at dark comedy and one of Dick Miller’s few starring roles.

Does it go without saying that they all love A Bucket of Blood and Dick Miller’s performance? Whitney is interested in Walter’s need to belong which also fuels his decline. As he receives more and more recognition for his “art,” he is driven to commit more and more heinous murders. Roger Corman gave many filmmakers their start and Chad pays tribute to Corman’s legacy in that regard. He also brings up Dick Miller’s appearance’s in Joe Dante’s films. Joseph talks of how seeing Dick Miller in a film always brings a smile to his face. He also points out that Bert Convy’s main legacy is as a gameshow host. Jeff talks about some of writer Charles Griffith’s other screenplays and recommends the documentary on Dick Miller, That Guy Dick Miller (2014). All-in-all, your Grue Crew is impressed with what Roger Corman accomplished on a typically low budget and with Dick Miller’s performance. This one is highly recommended!
