Calacus Monthly Hit & Miss – Sell Before We Dai & Red Bull Racing
Every month we look at the best and worst communicators in the sports world from the last few weeks.
HIT - SELL BEFORE WE DAI
Languishing towards the bottom of the Sky Bet League One table, Reading FC are a club in turmoil.
Having been in the Premier League as recently as 2012, it is the Royals’ problems off the pitch are causing greater concern.
Owner Dai Yongge, whose takeover was announced on the night of Reading’s triumphant Championship play-off semi-final in May 2017, has been told by the English Football League (EFL) that he must “fund the club adequately” or “make immediate arrangements to sell.”
During his reign, the club has been relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time in 22 years; staff have not been paid; they have been deducted a total of 18 points; and given a five- year transfer embargo due to financial issues. Yongge’s tenure has also seen extreme cost-cutting, including redundancies and the CEO selling their most valuable player assets behind the back of their manager.
Yongge had previously failed in his bid to take over Hull City in September 2017 after reportedly not meeting the Football Association's fit and proper persons test. The Premier League were also said to be concerned about the takeover at the time.
At first he did make significant investment into the club, twice breaking the club’s transfer record. He also turned down large sums of money for their star players and tied them down to new contracts, funding the club through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite this, the result was only one top-half Championship finish and the EFL’s Profit and Sustainability regulations charged the club in 2021/22 with breaches due to the increased salary spending, leading to a six-point deduction.
Towards the end of 2022, further scandal followed when staff were not paid on time for November and December. With the club failing to stick to the business plan imposed by the EFL that stipulated maximum loses, they were deducted a further six-points in April of that year and would ultimately be relegated from the second tier.
Another tumultuous summer ensued and July saw the club hit with a winding-up order by HMRC for non-payment of tax. Pre-season preparation was hardly ideal given the club was without a manager or enough players to field a team, late into the summer.
The club have been deducted a total of six points so far this season, with another two point-deduction (with a further two points suspended) handed out in February after the club failed to meet HMRC payment obligations, in accordance with EFL Regulations.
By late 2021, the club’s annual £32mn wage bill was more than double total revenue and Reading have been barred from buying new players almost ever since with £220mn net debt being the biggest in English football outside the Premier League.
During this turbulent period, Yongge undertook little to no media interviews or fans’ forums where he could explain his strategy or plans to raise new funding or sell the club.
It defies belief that Yongge is financially struggling given that The Daily Mail recently revealed that he has purchased a multi-million pound mansion by Buckingham Palace.
This silence gives the impression that he has lost interest in the club and appears content to see it collapse, ignoring the importance of the Royals to its community of fans and stakeholders.
One of the oldest clubs in the Football League and rich with history, the fans have not taken the problems lightly.
Their continued campaigning against the regime, keeping the issue in the public eye, while increasing the pressure on the EFL and Yongge, has provoked widespread sympathy and support from clubs and fans from far and wide.
They have mobilised and ensured consistent communication and messaging through the Sell Before We Dai group.  Since they were set up in June 2023 they have gained a significant social media following, secured vital regular media coverage and organised various high-profile protests in a dignified and progressive manner.
They describe themselves as ‘a fan-led pressure group pushing to encourage Reading FC owner Dai Yongge to sell up to a new owner before more damage is done to the club we know and love’ with a clear objective to ‘secure a sustainable future for Reading FC.’
The group has received support from a coalition of MPs, including former Prime Minister, Theresa May, and James Sutherland, who recently said: “As a fan what’s happening here is devastating. It’s clear that we need to better protect football from rogue owners — and if you want the perfect test case this it, right here.”
They also were instrumental in the council’s decision to list the stadium as an asset of community value, symbolising its importance. That means the local community will be informed if the venue is listed for sale within the five year listing period. The community can then enact the Community Right to Bid, which gives them a moratorium period of six months to determine if they can raise the finance to purchase the asset.
Tennis-ball disruption in the 16th minute of home games (marking the number of points deducted under Dai’s ownership) started at the Bolton Wanderers game and has largely continued since.
The most dramatic protest saw Reading’s League One match against Port Vale in January abandoned, when tennis balls were again thrown, before around 1,000 home fans invaded the pitch to protest against the ownership.
Sell Before We Dai urged no more invasions and said in a statement: “We should always be prepared to be bold with our actions. That was made clear on 13th January. Fed up of being lied to and seeing their club slowly die, fans felt they were left with no other option than to run on to the pitch and force the game to be abandoned.
“That action was a desperate attempt to bring attention of our plight to the nation, and to pressure Dai Yongge to do the right thing and stop delaying the sale of the club.
“We also need to come together as a football community and consider our next actions very carefully.
“We do not want to throw away all we’ve achieved over the past week. We received overwhelming backing from across the football community and media for our actions. We may lose that support if there is another pitch invasion in the short term.
“We also do not want to give anyone at Reading FC an excuse to put the blame on us for what is ultimately the fault of one man and his associates who have left us with a shell of a club.
“As we say, no action is off the table, at least in the long term. Fans have shown that they will do whatever it takes to force this regime out of our club. But right now is not the time to get the match abandoned again.”
Sell Before We Dai have not only met with the EFL, local politicians, fan-led review chair Tracy Crouch as well as elusive Royals CEO Dayong Pang.
They helped fund a truck bearing Yongge’s face to drive outside the House of Commons leading calls for the independent football regulator and another ahead of England’s match against Belgium in late March.
That same month, a club statement confirmed that Yongge was in talks with Wycombe Wanderers Football Club regarding the sale of Bearwood Park — Reading’s state-of-the-art training facility that only opened in 2019, sparking further outrage.
Sell Before We Dai organised a protest outside Wycombe's Adams Park stadium on Friday evening and said: "Selling one of the club's key assets makes the club even less attractive to a new owner".
Wycombe quickly made a statement confirming that the plans were on hold: "Wycombe Wanderers Football Club are putting on hold provision for funding to Reading Football Club and the acquisition of the Bearwood Park training facility from its owners.
"Importantly, it was agreed that while the details were being finalised and due diligence carried out, Feliciana would provide sufficient financing to Reading to allow it to pay its tax obligations and operating expenses, including payroll for the staff and players.
"It was Wycombe and Feliciana’s belief that they were helping Reading and professional football with the offer to assist its neighbour in a manner that had historically been used in the past by many football clubs. Indeed, Wycombe’s own training ground had been sold over a decade ago to reduce operating expenses and fund the club when the club had its own financial issues.”
Speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire, former chairman, Sir John Madejski, said: “I’m always an optimistic person and I think things will ratify in the near future and the club will be sold.
“If, as I think there are some very wealthy owners lining up, about three of them as I understand it, they’ve got incredibly deep pockets and if they can keep the training ground that would be wonderful because it’s state of the art.
“If there are any business people out there listening , I think reading could be a tremendous opportunity for somebody out there with deep pockets, I really do.”
Hopefully, Sir John is correct and The Royal’s supporters will soon have reason for optimism. They have shown what can be achieved by holding power to account, and refusing to let injustice slide.
It says so much for the club’s troubled finances that a fundraiser was set up by fans to support Reading staff who have not been paid while the Tilehurst End blog assessed what has gone wrong for the Royals and wrote: “This is now a club fighting to stay in League One, let alone get back into the Championship, following a chaotic pre-season and yet more points deductions.
“This is now a club with an owner who struggles to pay his own staff and the tax man, is in constant trouble with the authorities, and has been the subject of open revolt from fans who’ve had enough and are desperate to force him out. This is now a club that sent redundancy letters to 17-20 staff members right before Christmas.
“It all goes back to one man: Dai Yongge. He’s been the agent of destruction in Reading’s 2023, through both callousness and incompetence, leaving everyone else to suffer the consequences of his actions. Managers, staff members, players and fans - he’s mistreated, angered, undermined and disrespected them all. 2023 is the year Reading Football Club paid the price.”
In late March, there were positive developments when the club announced that they had “committed to a letter of intent with a potential purchaser of Reading Football Club. The parties will now enter a period of exclusive negotiation.”
According to the Telegraph, “It has now emerged that the mystery consortium from North America are the preferred bidders, appearing to have secured a deal ahead of hedge fund company Genevra Associates.
The party are understood to have advanced funds ahead of approval by the Football League to enable Reading to pay their liabilities and avoid another points deduction.”
Understandably, Sell Before We Dai were not getting carried away, especially without the identity of the bidder being made public and said: ““We implore the potential buyer to reach out to STAR and the wider fanbase as soon as possible to provide some reassurances.
“We also need to stress that ‘exclusivity’ does not mean ‘done deal’ and as outlined in the statement, there is still some way to go before we can truly celebrate the end of the Dai regime.
“This may be the beginning of the end, but it is still just the beginning. However, though we are preaching caution, there is clear reason to be optimistic.”
What happens next remains to be seen, but the dignified and determined actions of the fans at least give some hope that Yongge will sell and the club will rise once again.
MISS – RED BULL RACING
The controversial first title win for Max Verstappen at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a watershed moment for Formula One.
With Lewis Hamilton seemingly on his way to a record eighth Drivers’ Championship, the safety car was deployed after Nicholas Latifi crashed five laps from the end.
Amid a muddling of the official rules, that gave Max Verstappen the opportunity to overtake Hamilton on the final lap and earn his first world title, signalling a change in dominance from Hamilton’s Mercedes AMG team to Verstappen’s Red Bull Racing.
Formula One competition has been rather dull since then, with Mercedes struggling to adapt to new regulations and Red Bull Racing dominating.
After winning the Bahrain Grand Prix at the start of the current season, Verstappen’s fourth Drivers’ Championship appears to be a procession, with little of the jeopardy such a high-profile sporting competition deserves.
By the time he triumphed at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix a few weeks later, Verstappen had won nine races in a row, and his 29th out of the past 34 races since mid-2022.
Literally and figuratively, Red Bull is a well-oiled machine, with the company thriving on the track and tightly controlling what information is released into the public domain.
That approach has been threatened since early February, when news broke that Red Bull was undertaking an internal investigation into allegations of ‘inappropriate, controlling behaviour’ by Team Principal Christian Horner.
"After being made aware of certain recent allegations, the company launched an independent investigation," Red Bull said in a statement.
"This process, which is already under way, is being carried out by an external specialist barrister. The company takes these matters extremely seriously and the investigation will be completed as soon as practically possible. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time."
Horner is something of a pantomime villain in Formula One, unafraid to push technical boundaries and happy to clash with his rivals in search of success.
While acknowledging that an investigation was going on, Red Bull failed to follow a basic rule of crisis communications – do not leave a big information void that can lead to speculation and make the situation worse.
It took two weeks for Formula One and governing body the FIA to make statements, which said little other than that they would be monitoring developments, while Ford, who will become Red Bull’s engine partner in 2026, were more assertive in their demands for a prompt resolution.
In a letter to the Red Bull team, CEO Jim Farley expressed his displeasure with “the unresolved allegations of inappropriate behaviour by Red Bull Racing leadership.”
He said: “As we have indicated previously, without satisfactory response, Ford’s values are non-negotiable. It is imperative that our racing partners share and demonstrate a genuine commitment to those same values. My team and I are available at any time to discuss this matter. We remain insistent on, and hopeful, for a resolution we can all stand behind.”
On the eve of the new F1 season, Red Bull's investigation dismissed the case against Horner and said in a statement: “The independent investigation into the allegations made against Mr Horner is complete, and Red Bull can confirm that the grievance has been dismissed.
“The complainant has a right of appeal. Red Bull is confident that the investigation has been fair, rigorous and impartial. The investigation report is confidential and contains the private information of the parties and third parties who assisted in the investigation, and therefore we will not be commenting further out of respect for all concerned. Red Bull will continue striving to meet the highest workplace standards."
Strangely, no details of the inquiry were made public. While it was to be expected that the complainant and incident specifics remained anonymous, no information about the process, the legal team who undertook the investigation, nor Horner’s defence and the investigation’s conclusions were forthcoming.
Not even the identity of the lawyer who undertook the investigation was made public, let alone the scope of the undertaking or whether it made any recommendations.
For such a high-profile case to lack transparency inevitably gave rise to accusations of a whitewash aimed at moving on as swiftly as possible, when all the pithy statements did were raise more questions than were answered.
If Red Bull thought that the new Formula One season would see the investigation forgotten about as fans and media moved on, they were very much mistaken.
After the investigation, an anonymous whistleblower leaked a file of unverified emails, images and messages, purported to be from Horner to a female third party, to a wide range of media, Formula One, the FIA, and the sport’s nine other team leaders.
Horner, having previously refused to comment beyond protesting his innocence and confidence that the investigation would confirm as much, went on the offensive.
He said: “The only reason this has gained so much attention is because of the leakage and the attention that there has been drawn in the media. What has happened then after that is that others have looked to take advantage of it. F1 is a competitive business and elements have looked to benefit from it and that is perhaps the not so pretty side of out industry.”
Could Horner expect his rivals to remain silent, when he as previously been so forthright about other issues that have arisen? And do other team principals such as Mercedes’ Toto Wolff and the McLaren CEO Zak Brown not have a right to comment, particularly given that the tawdry episode has dragged their sport into the gutter?
No wonder that they have urged more transparency, while Formula One and the FIA have requested to see the findings of the investigation.
What the crisis also exposed was the fractious divisions within Red Bull which threaten to hinder its dominance just when it looked as if an era of supremacy was inevitable.
Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, who died last year, left his 49% share to his family, while Thai pharmacist Chaleo Yoovidhya owns a controlling 51%, with Horner’s future very much a point of conflict between them.
Yoovidhya, who some suggested has been trying to extend his powerbase by removing those he does not consider his allies, backs Horner, no doubt convinced by the Englishman’s track record of building a dominant race team that he has led since 2005, while Mateschitz’s family are said to want him out.
Matters took another turn when Red Bull’s long-term special adviser Helmut Marko, known for his indiscretion towards media and other Formula One stakeholders, came under the spotlight with initial reports suggesting he may be suspended.
That triggered emphatic vocal support from ally Max Verstappen, who warned that his future was closely linked with that of Marko.
After qualifying, Verstappen was asked what he thought about the threats to Marko and responded: "My loyalty to [Marko] is very big. It's very important that he stays within the team. If such an important pillar falls away, that's not good for my situation as well. So, for me, Helmut has to stay, for sure.”
Not only was that a clear threat to the Red Bull senior leadership, it was also in stark contrast to Verstappen's carefully worded answer when asked about Horner’s position.
Whether he was speaking as a proxy for his son or not, Jos Verstappen then made it clear that he saw Horner’s position as untenable.
Verstappen Snr made it clear that Horner has to go, that the Horner controversy was "driving people apart" and that the team would "explode" if their principal remained.
“I sympathise with the woman, with all that she went through, but we will see what happens.
“In the press conference Horner gave the other day it was all about him and his problems when we should be talking about Max, the car, his performance and the race. I've already said I think it is causing problems if he stays.
"There is tension here while he remains in position. The team is in danger of being torn apart. It can't go on the way it is. It will explode. He is playing the victim, when he is the one causing the problems.
"I think it's too late for Christian to say 'leave me alone' but he has the support of the Thai owner so I think he will stay for the rest of the season. I said it would bad if he stayed, it really isn't good for the team, this whole situation.
“But the most important thing for me is that Max is happy. That's what counts for me. I just want him to be happy.”
It can’t have helped Red Bull fans that Verstappen was linked with a move to Mercedes amid the in-fighting within the team, with Horner admitting that they could not force an unhappy driver to remain regardless of a long contract.
To make matters worse for Red Bull, they chose International Women’s Day to suspend the woman at the centre of the controversy, with the team again offering no detail for the grounds of her suspension.
Could there be a more effective way to remind women in motor sport that they need to stay in their lane?
Unsurprisingly, the accuser then lodged an official complaint about Horner’s behaviour with the FIA’s ethics committee, which the BBC reported was not the first complaint made to the governing body amid concerns that Red Bull might try to cover the story up.
It was left to Hamilton, who has urged more diversity and better governance within the sport, to underline the problems the Horner crisis has caused.
He said: “As someone who loves the sport it's definitely disappointing to see what's going on right now. I think transparency is really key and I'm really, really hoping to see some progress moving forwards.
“We always have to do more to try to make the sport and the environment people work in feel safe and inclusive. It will be really interesting to see how it’s dealt with in terms of the effect it may or may not have on the sport moving forwards. It’s a really important moment for the sport to make sure that we stand true to our values.”
Ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen tried to play down the controversy, backing Red Bull’s investigation process, while lamenting the lack of focus on the team’s on-track success and focus.
The information vacuum, coupled with a lack of leadership from the sport’s governance serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of reputation in top-level sport and Red Bull’s apparent lack of preparation for an internal issue when it has previously been readied for external issues combat.
The lack of transparency and suspension of the complainant reflect badly on the values Red Bull want to transmit.
The somewhat tone-deaf investigation and communications strategy has raised questions about the team's integrity and damaged Red Bull's reputation with its partners and fans which extends way beyond motorsport.

I know it's thought the Daily Mail is all Pro-Sussex all the time... by u/Chasmosaur
I know it's thought the Daily Mail is all Pro-Sussex all the time... ...but they do still get some jabs in. With the lawsuit still fresh in their mind and on the balance sheets, they can't be quite as obvious, so finding different angles becomes necessary. From Richard Eden yesterday:April 11, 2024, Daily Mail: Make them the Earl and Countess of Bucklebury! Why Carole and Michael Middleton deserve their own titles for their heroic support of William and Kate [ Archive | Original ]I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact Doria Ragland has been making the reality TV celebrity circuit of late...Excerpt:William’s ability to carry on undertaking royal duties - while his father is also fighting the disease - is testament to the support the Middletons are providing. It’s becoming clear, in fact, that Catherine’s parents are just as important to the future of the Monarchy as the Windsors themselves – and, I believe, deserve some formal recognition for their work. Their active support gave William the confidence to continue with royal engagements on his own before Easter, for example, and he will do so again when the children return to Lambrook School next week....or to highlight that Catherine does not have siblings going on reality TV to gossip about her, or simply flat-out suing her.William’s increasing reliance on his in-laws is a natural development. Part of Catherine’s appeal was always the strength of her family relationships, with her parents and also with siblings, Pippa Matthews, 40, and James Middleton, 36.The whole underlying current of the fact they deserve titles for quietly supporting the monarchy by actually supporting the family is just the icing on the cake.As Catherine takes time out to overcome her health problems, the magnitude of the role they play has never been so clear. And that’s why I believe it’s time that Carole and Michael – she a former air hostess and he a one-time flight dispatcher - should be given titles reflecting their importance. As their friend, the tycoon Sir John Madejski, said to me a full decade ago: ‘They should be the Earl and Countess of Bucklebury, or something. ‘They deserve it. They are great people and really good role models.’ Who could disagree with that? post link: https://ift.tt/a7SWrC8 author: Chasmosaur submitted: April 12, 2024 at 05:01PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit disclaimer: all views + opinions expressed by the author of this post, as well as any comments and reblogs, are solely the author's own; they do not necessarily reflect the views of the administrator of this Tumblr blog. Xu Bing <Travelling to the Wonderland>,2013
Materials: Mixed media: Stones, Clay, Mist, Light effect, Sounds of bird and insects, LCD screen
Dimension: Varies
Location: Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK
Celebrated Chinese artist Xu Bing transformed the V&A's John Madejski Garden with a magical installation, 'Travelling to the Wonderland', inspired by the classic Chinese fable Tao Hua Yuan ('The Peach Blossom Spring'). Drawing on elements from Chinese landscape scrolls, Xu Bing created a dream-like atmosphere with mist, light effects and sounds of birds and insects. Xu Bing's works often challenge viewers to question their first impression – everything is not as it first seems. From certain angles visitors could see hidden machines and cables reminding them that this wonderland was ultimately un-real, just as the Peach Blossom Spring is ultimately fictional. (1)
Xu Bing has turned a traditional Chinese story depicting a utopia into an installation in contemporary art. And He presents this work in the Western world. Artist crosses the language barrier and makes a traditional Chinese story into a world artwork that can be enjoyed. This is also the direction I would like to research and develop in the future.

Portraiture
Group practical
we sat parallel to another person, we had our pencils stabbed through paper so we could not see the paper below and we had to focus only on the face and not look down, basically a blind drawing as far as looking at the drawing but we could see what the object was as we drew it.
Tumblr media
i did the same thing again in graphite and had got a better understanding of proportion considering we could not see the drawing.
Tumblr media
we then chose a unique image of ourselves, well mine was rather unique and we did a rough sketch to help us decide what we wanted to draw for our social realism drawing, i was quite impressed by my sketch the proportions were not half bad.
Tumblr media
photo REALISM
i chose to just do the center of my face as i felt it would look the best in the social realism style, i then grid my drawing in 4 by 5 squares and did the same to my paper before then beginning my drawing of the outline and basic shapes in order for me to add tone and texture later on
Tumblr media
what is photo realism?
photo realism is a form of art where a drawing or painting looks absolutely identical to the object or photo it has been drawn from, so much so you cant tell the difference between the two, it takes time, patients and a lot of skill.
but most of the art community don’t consider this to be an art form.
Many would argue that the technical skill required to make Photorealism art can be exceeded by a decent color photocopier or a computer, thus avoid to use the word art in such context, but this discussion brings us to an analogy of photography. If photography is merely capturing an image of what is already there, where is the art in that? It is right there in the photographer’s perspective, the exact choice made by the person wielding the camera in what to capture and from which angle, moment and perspective. If a person creating a photorealistic recreation of a photograph doesn’t have that “artistic” input of a photographer, then what is artistic about the process? Some would say even those renditions are not strict interpretations of photographs, instead, they incorporate additional, often subtle, pictorial elements to create the illusion of a reality which does not actually exist, or cannot be perceived by the human eye.
In the end, as in many things in art, and life in general, the final conclusion remains behind the individual perspective

Da Vinci
Long recognised as one of the great artists of the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci was also a pioneer in the understanding of human anatomy. Had his ground-breaking work been published, it would have transformed European knowledge of the subject.
Tumblr media
https://www.rct.uk/collection/themes/exhibitions/leonardo-da-vinci/the-queens-gallery-palace-of-holyroodhouse/explore-the-exhibition#/
At the outset of Leonardo’s career, anatomical illustration was in its infancy. To convey the three-dimensional form of the body and to show how it moves, Leonardo had to develop a whole range of new illustrative techniques. His challenges were in many ways the same as those faced by anatomists today, and some of Leonardo’s drawings are remarkably similar in approach to modern medical imagery, such as MRI and CT scans and 3D computer modelling.
Tumblr media
Studies of Human Proportion
While studying Vitruvius for his work on the Milan and Pavia cathedrals, Leonardo became captivated by the ancient Roman architect’s detailed studies of human proportions and measurements. In addition, when he was measuring horses for the Sforza monument, he became interested in how they related to human proportions. Comparative anatomy appealed to his instinct for finding patterns across different subjects. So in 1490 he began measuring and drawing the proportions of the human body.
Tumblr media
The construction lines and all of the annotation almost take away from the actual subject and become more of the focus, which was the main idea anyway It was not meant to be a work of art, but rather a manual for how to create it.
Da vinci was a polymath, a person of wide knowledge or learning. He was not only an artist but a scientist, sculpture and an architect.
Tumblr media
Frida Kahlo
was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. Inspired by the country’s popular culture, she employed a naïve folk art style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy. In addition to belonging to the post-revolutionary Mexicayotl movement, which sought to define a Mexican identity, Kahlo has been described as a surrealist or magical realist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kahlo’s paintings often feature root imagery, with roots growing out of her body to tie her to the ground. This reflects in a positive sense the theme of personal growth; in a negative sense of being trapped in a particular place, time and situation; and in an ambiguous sense of how memories of the past influence the present for either good and/or ill.[110] In My Grandparents and I, Kahlo painted herself as a ten-year holding a ribbon that grows from an ancient tree that bears the portraits of her grandparents and other ancestors while her left foot is a tree trunk growing out of the ground, reflecting Kahlo’s view of humanity’s unity with the earth and her own sense of unity with Mexico.[111] In Kahlo’s paintings, trees serve as symbols of hope, of strength and of a continuity that transcends generations.[112] Additionally, hair features as a symbol of growth and of the feminine in Kahlo’s paintings and in Self Portrait with Cropped Hair, Kahlo painted herself wearing a man’s suit and shorn of her long hair, which she had just cut off.[113] Kahlo holds the scissors with one hand menacingly close to her genitals, which can be interpreted as a threat to Rivera – whose frequent unfaithfulness infuriated her – and/or a threat to harm her own body like she has attacked her own hair, a sign of the way that women often project their fury against others onto themselves.[114] Moreover, the picture reflects Kahlo’s frustration not only with Rivera, but also her unease with the patriarchal values of Mexico as the scissors symbolize a malevolent sense of masculinity that threatens to “cut up” women, both metaphorically and literally.[114] In Mexico, the traditional Spanish values of machismo were widely embraced, and as a woman, Kahlo was always uncomfortable with machismo.[114]

Fulang-Chang and I depicts Kahlo with one of her pet monkeys, interpreted by many as surrogates for the children she and Diego Rivera were unable to conceive. The painting was included in the first major exhibition of her work, held at Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1938. In the essay that accompanied the show, the Surrealist leader André Breton described Kahlo’s work as “a ribbon around a bomb” and hailed her as a self-created Surrealist painter. Although she appreciated his enthusiasm for her work, Kahlo did not agree with his assessment: “They thought I was a Surrealist but I wasn’t. I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality.” Kahlo later gave this painting to her close friend Mary Sklar, attaching a mirror to it so that, if Sklar chose, the two friends could be together.
Tai Shan Schierenberg
Tumblr media
Tai Shan Schierenberg lives and works in London. He graduated from the Slade School of Art in 1987 and in 1989 won first prize in the National Portrait Gallery’s John Player Portrait Award. He was then commissioned to paint Sir John Mortimer for the Gallery. The National Portrait Gallery also holds his portraits of Lord Carrington from 1994, Lord Sainsbury, 2002 and most recently Seamus Heaney from 2004. Other noted commissions include Professor Stephen Hawking, Sir John Madejski and a double portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. For Schierenberg, there is an emotional charge that comes from the different textures and densities, and ultimately the light conditions, that occur in a place at a certain time. He describes his process in 2010: Painting and painting and painting, endlessly exploring ideas in paint on canvas, always painting my way. Finding that over time I can’t see the trees for the paint. Sometimes its good to try a new way, a different path, expose oneself to the vagaries of chance - and see the trees again.
Tumblr media
Before he finishes a commission, Tai-Shan Schierenberg usually splatters a bit of paint in the corner of the portrait. It’s not a stylistic move – the brushstrokes in his paintings are fluid but the images themselves are representative – but rather one which gives the subject something to complain about.
in the image above you can clearly see the texture and markings on the canvas, the artist uses oil paint on canvas and applies it using a pallet knife and a large brush, making various large strokes in the work. this gives a rough texture and edge to the piece.
Tumblr media
These instinctive visual images refuse to betray the plasticity of the medium. Unlike Freud, Schierenberg sees paint simultaneously as flesh. It is exactly this technique that establishes the major paradoxes characteristic of his work. It is both abstract and realist, edgy and sensitive, grand and inconclusive, violent and melancholic, physically intense and aesthetically detache
Tumblr media
Lucian Freud
was influenced by surrealism, but by the early 1950s his often stark and alienated paintings tended towards realism. Freud was an intensely private and guarded man, and his paintings, completed over a 60-year career, are mostly of friends and family. They are generally somber and thickly impastoed, often set in unsettling interiors and city scapes. The works are noted for their psychological penetration and often discomforting examination of the relationship between artist and model. Freud worked from life studies, and was known for asking for extended and punishing sittings from his models.
Tumblr media
one of my chosen artists, tai shan sheirenberg seems to be heavily influenced by the style of lucian freud yet he made his own style, they both use the same meduims, oil on canvas also.
here in the colder tones we have a painting by lucian freud, you can see the texture of the brush strikes that help carve out the facial features.
here is a painting by tai shan, the tones are a lot warmer, they are not of the same person tho they look similar, you can see the brush strokes again on this image that help carve out the facial features, tho they are a lot more prominent in this painting as thats tai shans style, you see paint before you see the face .

Interpreting line
The Visual Element of Line is the foundation of all drawing. It is the first and most versatile of the visual elements. Line in an artwork can be used in many different ways. It can be used to suggest shape, pattern, form, structure, growth, depth, distance, rhythm, movement and a range of emotions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have a psychological response to different types of lines:
Curved lines suggest comfort and ease
Horizontal lines suggest distance and calm
Vertical lines suggest height and strength
Jagged lines suggest turmoil and anxiety
The way we draw a line can convey different expressive qualities:
Freehand lines can express the personal energy and mood of the artist
Mechanical lines can express a rigid control
Continuous lines can lead the eye in certain directions
Broken lines can express the ephemeral or the insubstantial
Thick lines can express strength
Thin lines can express delicacy

Reading 1-2 Sheffield United: FA Cup Match Report- Blades need extra-time to progress to the quarter-finals
Tumblr media
                                         (My Image created on Canva)
An extra time goal from ex-Royal Billy Sharp was enough for the Blades to progress to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup, after Chris Wilder’s side overcame Reading by 2-1.
The Championship side managed to force extra-time after George Puscas’s penalty cancelled David McGoldrick’s early first half header.
Chris Wilder’s Blades are now one more game away from a Wembley semi-final.
The Blades flew out the blocks in the opening minutes of the game and as a result went 1-0 up within the first two minutes after a Ben Osbourne’s cross from the left found the head of David McGoldrick who headed in unmarked in the box.
The early proceedings in the first half felt like a training session for the Blades, and they really should have added to the lead when both John Egan and David McGoldrick had chances which neither could convert.
Reading gradually eased their way into the first half and the best attempt they could muster early on came from a ferocious attempt by forward Yakou Meite which was parried away by Dean Henderson.
The Royals really struggled to create many problems for the hosts in the first half but were handed a lifeline right on half-time courtesy of a George Baldock push on Reading midfielder Andy Rinomhota in the box.
The resulting penalty was tucked away by inform striker George Puscas who made it his 11th goal for the Royals so far this season with that spot kick.
Mark Bowen’s side started the second half the better but only had a half chance from young attacker Michael Olise to show for it.
As the second half progressed, Reading sat deeper and deeper and inadvertently invited relentless Blades pressure.
David McGoldlrick and Luke Freeman had the best two chances before the 80th minute mark, but neither could convert setting up a nervous and frantic final 10 minutes for both sides as the prospect of extra time drew closer.
Neither team could force a winner meaning that extra-time was needed to settle this contest at the Madejski Stadium.
Nothing really happened in the first part of extra time up till the last minute of the first period of extra-time when ex-Royal Billy Sharp popped up at the back post to send the Blades through to the quarter-final of the FA Cup.
Quotes of the Day
Tumblr media
Reading boss Mark Bowen admitted the difficulty of accepting tonight’s result after the significant amount of effort that the Royals put into the contest.
He said: “I am proud but it's hard to take when you put so much effort into the game.
“We knew we were playing a top class side and would have to forsake a little bit of ground.
“We had a game plan of soaking up the pressure and hitting them on the counter attack, but when the game settled down after a terrible start we took the game to them for large periods.
“As a coach I'm disappointed because the two goals are from crosses and we do a lot of work on them but we got caught out.It was difficult to take.
“We played Wigan last week and we let ourselves down. I came here hoping to put smiles on the fans' faces because we're in the quarter final of the FA Cup.
“I wouldn't expect them to smile because we've been beaten but hopefully they can go home with a sense of pride that their team put in a real shift and probably deserved more.
Tumblr media
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder praised the Reading fans tonight for how they enhanced the performance of the Royals against the his Blades side tonight.
He said: "It was a tight game. It was a tough game. I thought the Reading crowd were excellent and they really inspired their players."
"It was a really dangerous game for us. So to get the win in a tight game was really satisfying for us."
What does this all mean?
The major implications of the result is that Sheffield United are now fighting on two fronts for the rest of the season. They have a top four race to concentrate on alongside a FA Cup quarter-final now.
In terms of Reading, this was their biggest game of the season with being mid-table in the Championship. No threat of relegation at this moment and little chance of getting back into the promotion picture made this game a significant event in the Royals’s season.
But now being out of the FA Cup means that the side from Berkshire can focus on finishing the domestic season strong.
People need to remember that Reading can’t get complacent now as they could be pulled back into the relegation dogfight in the Championship if complacency slips into Bowen’s side.
The stats that matter
Sheffield United have reached the FA Cup quarter-final for the first time since 2013-14 - but the last time they did so as a top flight side was 1992-93.
Billy Sharp has now scored in back to back games at the Madejski Stadium. Tonight in Sheffield United’s 2-1 win and last season when United beat Reading  2-0.
Reading have lost their last five meetings with Sheffield United in all competitions; only against Arsenal (14), Manchester United (6) and Middlesbrough (6) are they on longer current losing streaks.
George Puscas 11th goal today means that he is now joint top scorer with Reading forward Yakou Meite. Both are tied on 11 goals in all competitions.
David McGoldrick's second-minute strike was his first goal of the season for Sheffield United, in his 21st game with what was his 37th shot.
Man of the match
Billy Sharp
Tumblr media
The Ex-Reading striker didn’t start the game, but the impact he made when  coming on midway through the second half made the difference and in the end- sent Sheffield United through to the quarter-finals.
The goal he scored at the end of the first period of extra-time really knocked the stuffing out of Reading going into the second period of extra-time.
The 34-year-old was also involved in a bust up at the end of the match with Reading defender Michael Morrison and overall provided the fight the Blades needed to edge past the Royals.

London's Nebbia Works unveiled their new work, Between Forests and Skies, in September 2021. The project is an immersive exhibition pavilion exhibited at the V&A Museum in London as part of the London Design Festival 2021. The pavilion sits above a pool in the center of the John Madejski Garden, with a reflective aluminum skin that mirrors the pool's rippling light. Visitors are invited to enter and interact with the gallery and spend time in a "forest" of aluminum stands.
The pavilion was commissioned by En+ Group, the world's largest producer of low-carbon aluminum and independent hydropower, to demonstrate the importance of low-carbon raw materials in creating a more sustainable world. Aluminum is light, durable, and infinitely recyclable and is very widely used today. Decarbonization of aluminum is critical to achieving a low-carbon future for all industries. The aluminum used in the pavilion is manufactured with En+ Group's unique inert anode technology, which has a thousand times lower carbon footprint than the current industry average and is powered by renewable electricity.
Tumblr media
The introduction of this showroom is instilling in us humans a lifestyle of energy-saving and emission reduction. The decarbonization of aluminum, which may reduce carbon emissions from the use of materials, is a reluctant move by humans. With the diversification of transportation modes, the carbon emissions generated by humans are growing. As a last resort, we have developed new decarbonization of aluminum in building materials, which is a credit to sustainable development and fundamentally solves. Besides building materials and daily travel, food, and diet, human beings use their wisdom to extend the earth's life. I believe that people will use their knowledge to invent more meaningful things for the only world, based on the technology of aluminum decarbonization for building materials.

Nebbia Works constructs mono-material pavilion for V&A from low-carbon aluminium
Nebbia Works has created a self-supporting pavilion from simple aluminium sheets at the V&A museum as part of the London Design Festival to highlight the material's sustainable potential.
Set within the museum's John Madejski Garden, the installation consists of 27 metal sheets of identical dimensions, each propped up by a single leg carved and bent from its surface.
Nebbia Works' pavilion is installed in the V&A's John Madejski Garden
The structure is fused together to create the impression of being one continuous piece and made entirely from one batch of the metal, which manufacturer En+ claims is the "lowest carbon aluminium the world has ever produced".
Only 0.01 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) was emitted for each tonne of material created, the company says, falling far below the four-tonne threshold that is generally applied to low-carbon aluminium.
"We're going right down so there are virtually no emissions," En+ communications director Dawn James told Dezeen.
The installation is made entirely of aluminium
Once the festival has come to a close, the pavilion will be melted down into ingot and turned into products, showcasing aluminium's ability to be infinitely recycled.
To enable this, the structure does not rely on the addition of any other materials to hold itself aloft.
27 aluminium sheets are jointed to create the impression of one continuous structure
Instead, its algorithmically designed legs combined with the innate strength and lightness of aluminium make the pavilion entirely self-supporting and thus easy to dismantle and repurpose.
"We were trying to use a minimal amount of material and a minimal amount of fabrication to achieve the final piece, which basically turns 2D sheets into a 3D articulated space," said Nebbia Works co-founder Brando Posocco.
"What you see is exactly what you get," added V&A curator Meneesha Kellay. "There are no layers of material or a facade with lots of things hidden behind it."
The pavilion's legs are cut from its aluminium roof panels
The pavilion's legs were cut from its aluminium roof panels using a water jet cutter. They were then folded out by attaching them to a gantry crane and rolling them around a huge tube.
No lacquer or finish was applied to the material in order to maintain its recyclability. Rather, the surface was hand-buffed and its edges manually polished, helping to give the aluminium an organic quality.
"Most of the time you associate aluminium with being cold and mechanical, so one of the tasks we set ourselves was trying to make this material a bit more approachable," Posocco explained.
"The overall finish is not perfect or pristine, there is a kind of human touch to it."
The entire structure is made from aluminium down to its fixings
The aluminium used to create the pavilion is the first batch En+ has ever made using its revised production process.
So far, efforts to create low-carbon aluminium have largely focused on the huge amount of energy that is needed to run the industrial smelters, where aluminium oxide is separated into aluminium and oxygen through a process called electrolysis.
This accounts for around 65 per cent of emissions from aluminium production and can easily be circumvented by running the smelters using hydro or geopower.
But this still leaves so-called process emissions from smelting, which are generated as the carbon anodes used to induce this chemical reaction erode over time, releasing CO2.
A walkway allows visitors to enter the installation and walk on the pond
En+ has eliminated these emissions by swapping out the carbon anodes for inert anodes made from a ceramic alloy.
"These inert anodes do not erode during the process, so you get pure oxygen out of the top and pure aluminium out of the bottom of the smelter," James explained.
"For us, the smelting process accounts for 25 per cent of emissions, which we will be saving with inert anodes. So there are virtually no emissions."
The pavilion is reflected in the water of the pond
From here, the aim is to create a completely zero-carbon aluminium by 2050, in time for the company to become net-zero as a whole.
To achieve this, En+ is looking at rolling out the inert anode technology across all of its smelters in Siberia, as well as looking at its entire value chain, from the way that its refineries are powered to the mining of bauxite, which accounts for another two per cent of the company's production emissions.
No lacquers or coatings are applied to the aluminium
According to a report by the World Economic Forum, the use of inert anodes combined with hydropower could help to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the aluminium industry, which currently accounts for two per cent of all global emissions.
"Advances in anode technology could be quickly commercialized and offer wide-scale decarbonization for the industry," the report concluded.
Its surfaces are hand-buffed and polished to create an organic texture
Another company making use of inert anodes is Elysis, a joint venture between major aluminium producers Rio Tinto and Alcoa, which has already supplied its first batch to Apple and hopes to commercialise its technology in 2024.
"Making industry-wide changes is really fundamental in terms of carbon reduction," said Madhav Kidao, the other half of Nebbia Works. "And it's really important as designers that we challenge how we specify things and where they come from."
The installation is on show as part of the London Design Festival
Elsewhere, the steel industry is also trying to clean up its act with Swedish producer SSAB producing the first fossil-free batch of the alloy last month.
Swedish designer Lena Bergström has already created a candle holder from the material while carmaker Volvo claimed the first commercial batch.
Photography is by Ed Reeve.

In mainstream views of ancient Chinese, nature is superior to humans and cannot be defied. Living in nature was usually considered as a utopian dream of most of the ancient Chinese. Building gardens is one of the ways to realize the ancient Chinese dream. It is a way for emperors, poets, scholars and some government officials to simulate and miniature nature and create personal utopias to incite self meditation. Xu Bing’s work, traveling to the wonderland, shows the retrospective of ancient utopian dream which roots in his identity. he uses artificial rock, clay, plants and some miniature models like ancient buildings and animals to create an imagery of traditional Chinese garden, surrounding the pool at John Madejski Garden.
