1920 Art Deco Sunburst design, Le Bonheur du Jour, by George Barbier. 

A sunburst is a design or figure commonly used in architectural ornaments and design patterns and possibly pattern books. It consists of rays or "beams" radiating out from a central disk in the manner of sunbeams. Sometimes part of a sunburst, a semicircular or semi-elliptical shape, is used. Traditional sunburst motifs usually show the rays narrowing as they get further from the centre; from the later 19th century they often get wider, as in the Japanese Rising Sun Flag, which is more appropriate in optical terms. why is the headstock to thoms Yairi Dy88 different than every other Yairi Dy88 I see pictures of?

For those who don't know, the K.Yairi DY-88 is an electro-acoustic guitar that Thom used on tour during the OK Computer era. He had two of them, but donated one to a homeless-support charity auction in 2004. The lack of sound-hole on the guitar means it won't feedback at high volumes, which makes it useful as a touring instrument. He seems to have first purchased one in around 1996, after the band's touring gear was stolen in October of 1995. Thom was perhaps most notably seen with the K.Yairi during Paranoid Android and No Surprises on Later... with Jools Holland in 1997. He also played one heavily during the 1997 Glastonbury festival, including for Karma Police.

However, it's worth noting that Thom likely used other acoustics in studio for OK Computer — particularly for Climbing Up The Walls, since that song features Thom singing into the soundhole of an acoustic (Nigel recently confirmed that Thom did so on the recording, not just at live shows).

Headstock Inlays: K.Yairi vs Alvarez

In the late-90s photo seen above, the headstock shape looks pretty standard, comparing it to others on Reverb. The main difference is the headstock inlays. DY-88 instrument sold under the Alvarez brand simply have that company's logo inlaid on the headstock (as seen in those Reverb listings). Instruments sold under the Yairi brand have "K.YAIRI" inlaid at the top, and Yairi's triangle logo inlaid underneath. In addition, Yairi switched to a larger version of their inlay at some point in the 1990s. In the photo above, Thom's guitar has the latter inlays.

For most models, it's just a marketing difference. Alvarez is a USA-based brand/distributor, so guitars made for US market have that logo. According to some, instruments sold in the USA were marked as "Alvarez", while those sold in the UK and other regions were branded "K.YAIRI". If you dig around, you can also find instruments made for the Japanese market with the K.YAIRI inlays, including this eBay listing for a model called the YD-88S. But you can also found Alvarez-branded guitars sold in Japan, such as this YD-88 CTM with super simple fretboard inlays.

You can also find versions of the 88 with a rounder headstock shape sold by both brands. The official YD-88BK webpage shows an instrument with the K.YAIRI markings and the rounded shape. The "BK" in the model number stands for "black", and you can find maple ("M") and sunburst ("SB") versions as well.

Fingerboard Inlays: Round vs Pointy

The fretboard inlays inlays add even more confusion. Thom's guitar has "pointy" triangular inlays along one edge of the fingerboard, with triangles at both edges at the twelfth fret. But at least two other inlay patterns were used on these guitars, seemingly at the same time. The other patterns are noticeable in some of the listings that we linked to above. Here's a used listing in the USA for a black DY-88 with the same "pointy" fingerboard inlays as Thom's guitar, but with Alverez branding. Here's a used listing in Japan for a YD-88 with the same fingerboard inlays but with the K.YAIRI headstock inlays (it also features an aftermarket Roland MIDI modification — that guitar must've had an interesting life!). So the fingerboard inlays aren't specific to any region.

Model Number: YD-88 vs DY-88

You may have noticed that some of these are listed as "YD" rather than "DY". Here's a used listing in Japan for a black, 1993 YD-88 that looks identical to Thom's instrument, with both the K.YAIRI branding and the "pointy" inlays. This is one of few listings that shows an actual photo of the official model number, and it's listed as YD-88BKN. Presumably these same instruments were exported to the UK as well. But it's believable that Thom could've bought the guitar in the UK or when touring in Japan. So it seems likely that Thom's guitar is in fact a K.YAIRI YD-88, rather than a DY-88.

However, I can't find any consistent difference in the specs between the YD and DY version. So it may also have been regional marketing, just like the brand inlays on the headstock.

Needless to say, this company created quite a few aesthetic variations over the course of the 90s, but ultimately they all seem to be the same instrument.

I wanted to learn about what gear Kurt Cobain used so I started reading a list of every electric guitar he had and it's so funny because it's just like *this is Kurt's first Univox. I now have the rest of cast done (well, all but Draxum; have to figure that out..)

First we have the design for April O’Neil. Initially, like in the first picture, I just took the existing design in the show and made her a (Earth) pony, but it didn’t seem quite… right. not that there was anything wrong with it, but I wanted to make it seem like she’s an actual character from the MLP world and more distinguishable from the ROTTMNT show. So I decided to lean more into the hazel color scheme (since I knew her pony name would be “Hazel something”) and went with the results of the second picture. Named Hazel Prose. Has green and brown colors for her palette and has an open journal being written in as her cutie mark. Similarities between human and pony are her two curly pigtails, her glasses and jacket. 

Next is Hamato Yoshi/Lou Jitsu and Splinter designs. Instantly, I knew I wanted the human design to be translated into an earth pony, since when he was a movie star, he did more hand to hand combat, and that could be kicks and such as a horse. For the most part, the pony design is just a copy-paste of his human form, with a slight change to some of the colors as well as making his coat similar to Sunburst from MLP (I wanted to use that kind of coat design for a while, and now I got the chance). With his mutated form, I actually decided he should be a wingless “hippogriff”. Before hippogriffs were officially introduced into the franchise, there was one MLP analysis YouTuber that had his OC as his interpretation of a hippogriff. I decided to take inspiration from that and used it for pony Splinter, named Akabane (which if the name origin site is accurate, means “red feather” in Japanese). I imagined that in the MLP version, while Lou Jitsu, called “Flawless Star”, was taking the newly mutated baby creatures with him, one of the DNA canisters “Draxum” had broken open and fell on him, spilling griffon DNA on him. It only covered half and, since he wasn’t a Pegasus to begin with, didn’t get any wings, just the front half of a griffon.

Finally, my personal favorite, Foot Recruit, AKA Cassandra “Casey” Jones. For now, I’m keeping her pony name unknown, but know that like Hazel, she is named after her coloring. Because of that, I wanted there to be some purples and greys to her design and futz around with a few color palettes until I got something I liked. Mostly, I tried to make sure it matched alright with her uniform colors. Mane was a little hard to figure out. I didn’t want her to have the buzz cut because I didn’t think that look good on a pony, so I tried to go for a really short mane style. A few attempts later, I got what’s featured here, with a few other angles so I know how it lays on her head. made her a Pegasus because it seems right (Casey’s also pretty light on her feet, so making her a Pegasus just seemed like the right choice). And because she is part of the Foot Clan in ROTTMNT but she’s a pony, she’s part of the Hoof Clan, with the clan’s symbol featured in the picture. I did think briefly about doing something extra and edgy but honestly the design is meant to be unassuming. Because who would think that something as simple as a horseshoe would be related to something evil and bent on world domination. And of course it’s upside down.

Up-close pics of six of the seven Battle Beasts / Beastformers "Battle Emblems", heat-sensitive decals attached to each toy, take for @tfwiki. In 1988, the usual "mood ring" style of sticker was replaced with ones that revealed full-color illustrations.

Not shown is the Sunburst/Burstsun sticker... because I have yet to obtain one. Those were super-rare and randomly-packed; one Japanese Beastformers box set guaranteed you a White Leo with the Burstsun Emblem, but that don't come cheap despite being filled with toys you could get individually.

August's Monthly Music Post

Actually released in August (or late july lol):

"Memory Lane" De De Mouse & Maeshima Soshi. This is a song that belongs on an infinite lofi study playlist.

"Beautiful (2023 Edit)" AG Cook. ADHD-ass song.

"Do The Dance" SiM. JRock does screamo-y, punky ska? It's all English, for the foreign language cowards. You'll find yourself singing along to the WOOOAHHHS if you give it a chance!

"Sorry (Won't Cut It)" Bibio. Need to relax after that song worked you up? This psychedelic slowburn might just be what you need! This song wants to rock you in its arms, hoping you won't leave it behind. If you want something purely instrumental and more mellow, also try out "Sunbursting."

The song came out in June but the MV came out in August so it counts! "On My Mama" Victoria Monet is actually pretty good follow up to Bibio. They're cousins once removed--slick, slower but still hits hard, and just so enticing. Listen to the rest of her album, I really love "Alright," "Cadillac," & "I'm The One."

"Alien Love Call" Turnstile. The reimagined version! The raw edge of the original is sawed off but it's another transcendent slowburn for this month. Love the horn infusion. The ending of this song reminds me a lot of "Strangers" by Raj Ramaaya, from Wolf's Rain. The songs aren't similar beyond that but just had to shout out a beautiful, BEAUTIFUL song.

"Honor of Love" Wagakkiband. This is a band grown from vocaloid origins but instead of leaning into the synthetic roots, they use a lot of traditional Japanese instruments and vocal techniques and add a rockier edge with guitar and drums.

“Picture” Hyo. Generic dance kpop. You know I’m here for it.

“Don’t Wanna Go Back” Jihyo & Heize. Less generic kpop, not mind blowing though. I do think this mini is the best music from Twice is a while. It’s pretty and I love a duet with two women :3

"Nembutsu" Alpacas. More Jrock but there's so little singing in this song, the language shouldn't be a barrier. God, this song feels like driving through the desert and as you open your mouth to scream, dust and sand and ghosts crawl inside and the scream that comes out is older than any living thing around you. If you listen to only one track off this list, let it be this one. I haven't finished listening to the rest of the album, but it's good so far!

"Fall of the Leaves" Club Casualties. Does anyone remember the like... video game culture rave music from the mid-late 2000s? It's that... meets like... the synth indie music of the M-83's midnight city or like... safe and sound by capital cities. Like it's the UNZ UNZ of the former but aspires to the latter. This song isn't necessarily good but it is... intriguing.

A Rockin’ Proposal

Summary: Denki Kaminari is a dork. He really doesn't know much about love, even after years of dating Kyoka. But he does know that he wants to spend the rest of his life with her.

And here is my other story for the @kmjr-mini-bang! I had the lovely privilege of working with @danyartime​ once again, so be sure to check out her art! 

“Oh my gosh! Would you look at this guitar, Denki?” Kyoka gushed as she stood in front of the exhibit, her earjacks writhing every which way from her to struggle to resist pressing her face up against the glass. Her dark eyes gleamed as she admired the sleek body patterned in a sunburst, yellow-gold in the middle fading out into a ruby-red. Her eyes dropped down to the fretboard, and though Denki didn’t think it possible, her eyes began to sparkle even more. 

He couldn’t wait to see how much they would shine when he got down on one knee and presented her with the diamond ring in his pocket. 

Denki smiled sweetly when Kyoka finally tore herself away from the guitar so she could bounce back over to him. She spun in a circle, drinking in the magnificence of the exhibit around her, before once again beaming brightly at him. 

“This place is more wonderful than I remember!” she gushed. “I can’t wait to tell my parents how much it’s changed—and what’s still here. Thank you so much for bringing me here, Denki,” she said with a flutter of her lashes, then leaned in to kiss his cheek quickly. His skin immediately warmed under the brush of her glossed lips. They’d been dating for years now, and he was even planning to propose, but even now every move she made was magic to him. 

I’m so in love, he thought dreamily. That’s why he chose the perfect venue for his proposal—the Japanese rock and roll museum. Kyoka had been there as a child, and he’d heard her gush about how much she enjoyed it time and time again. He’d purposefully waited to take her to her favorite exhibit despite her many pleads to bypass other things and go there, saving it for the end. He wanted the moment to be as special as it could absolutely be. It was no less than what the love of his life deserved, after all. 

Kyoka had already fluttered away from him again to admire a drumset displayed behind a barrier of red velvet ropes. Their museum tour was almost at its end, and it was almost time. But he took a few precious moments to drink in everything about her—the way her purple-black hair shone under the lights, the subtle movements of her body, the simple everything that she was. Yes, he thought, this was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. And that’s why he had fallen down on one knee before she’d even turned around because everything about him was ready.

“O-oh my—Denki!” Kyoka gasped when she turned around to see him kneeling with a black ring box in his hand. Her hands flew to her mouth and her earjacks began to twist and writhe around her shoulders. Her startled cry attracted the attention of nearby museum-goers, and as soon as they realized what was happening, they began to grin and exchange excited whispers. 

“Kyoka Jiro,” Denki started. He’d practiced this speech a thousand times in the mirror to get it right, and so the words flowed off his tongue without him even thinking about it. Because in reality, he didn’t have to think hard about the way he felt about Kyoka at all. “I never thought hard about things like love and romance… and then I met you. Suddenly, there was this girl, this beautiful, sophisticated, amazing girl, right in front of me, and I didn’t know what to do with myself. I wanted you, but I was also so scared because I thought I could never be good enough. I mean, look at me. I’m a dork.” 

Kyoka snorted in laughter despite the tears streaming down her face. With a shy smile, Denki held out his free hand to her, and Kyoka obediently walked forward to lay her palm against his. “But you taught me that none of that matters. I don’t have to think hard. You taught me that the only thing that matters is the way I feel about you and the way you feel about me.” 

He let go of her hand so he could pop the ring box open. Kyoka’s eyes widened at the sight of the gleaming silver band topped with a glittering rectangular-cut alexandrite. She’d never liked diamonds, Denki remembered her telling him during one of their many three a.m. conversations, a tangent about their dreams about proposals and weddings. She wanted something unique, something made special for the bond they shared. “A ring for us and us alone.”

“Well, here’s how I feel about you. I love you. I love you so much that I don’t know what to do with myself when I look at you because honestly, I’m still a dork who doesn’t know much about the nuances of love.” He took her left hand, his fingers gently stroking along her ring finger. Kyoka let out a little sob, and he smiled sweetly. “But I do know that I’ll be your dork forever, and I’ll spend every day of my life making sure that you know that I love you more than life itself… if you’ll let me.” 

“Of course I will, you dork!” Kyoka gasped. However, before Denki could slide the ring on her finger, she suddenly wrenched her hand back. While he gawked at her in utter bewilderment, she frantically rifled through her purse. “Wait, just—just a minute! I—I have—Aha!” 

She yanked her hand out, and in it, she clutched a ring box. 

“Are you serious?” Denki laughed as she knelt down on her knees in front of him. Kyoka giggled, then opened the ring box to reveal a black titanium band. 

“Denki Kaminari,” she said. She was trying to be serious, but a smile was tugging at her lips and making it impossible for her to keep the amusement from bleeding into her tone. “I never thought too much about romance either, until I met you—this handsome, funny, totally radical guy, right in front of me, and I didn’t know what to do with myself. I wanted you, but I was scared that I would never be able to tell you how I feel because I couldn’t find the words.” 

Her smile widened as more tears began to stream down her cheeks. She reached out to take Denki’s hand, stroking the top of it with her thumb. “But you taught me that it wasn’t about the words. You taught me that the only thing that matters is how I feel about you and how you feel about me. And here’s how I feel, Denki—I want us to be two dorks in love forever, so much so that I went out and bought this ring with the intention of proposing to you today because I’m so stupidly in love with you.” 

“I guess great minds think alike, huh?” Denki chuckled. “Or two dork minds think alike…” 

“Either way, you’re stuck with me now,” Kyoka chuckled. Denki hummed, then reached up to gently tuck a swathe of her raven hair behind her ear. 

“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he murmured, and oh, did he mean it. 

The room applauded as Denki and Kyoka both slipped their rings on one another at the same time. They then both sat up on their knees and embraced; Denki hugged her tight, burying his face into her hair and inhaling deep her scent of lavender and sandalwood. But there was everything beyond that, too, her everything that clouded Denki’s mind and made him melt into her. He never could find the words to describe this feeling to her, this overwhelming wave of her that Denki so often found himself getting lost in. But that was all right. He didn’t need the words. 

But some words were still good. 

“I love you,” he murmured into her hair. “I—love—you,” he said again, punctuating each word with a strong kiss on her scalp. “I love you so much. God, you make me so happy.” 

“I’m happy, too,” Kyoka said and squeezed him tighter. She then pulled herself away from him, and Denki momentarily lamented the loss of her touch. But only momentarily. Because then she was back in his space again, brushing her fingertips over the line of his jaw and looking at him with those gorgeous spinel eyes that never failed to send that floaty feeling of bliss rushing to every corner of his body. As her fingers roamed his face, feeling the lines and ridges she’d long since memorized, her eyes caught sight of the ring snug around her finger—and she smiled tearily. 

“I love you, Denki. More than you could ever know.” 

“Heh. Dork minds really do think alike. You’re stealing the words right out of my mouth,” he teased. Kyoka sniffed, her expression twisting into one of faux offense. That’s when Denki decided now would be a fine time to kiss her, and so he did. And Kyoka kissed him back with just as much vigor. 

They didn’t need words. They just needed how they felt, because in that kiss, they told each other everything they could have ever needed to know.

I recently found out that the Beywarriors: Cyborg English dub has surfaced and I urge everyone to watch it. Considering the only other way I found to watch it was with subtitles in Mandarin and Japanese audio, this is much better (I used the Google Translate app’s camera feature to translate subtitles and that worked but was less than ideal)

Now that I can actually understand the dialogue without poor translations, I have more thoughts on it. I’ll put the well thought out ideas (like the fact that this has an overtly political message about nationalism and climate change) on another post, so here have everything else

Commander Homura gives me gender envy

Boyle and Homura give off a very specific kind of vibe. Like Homura has mom energy and Boyle has dad energy but they don’t give couple energy (and much less divorced energy)

Considering Nico’s name references Nikola Tesla, Al references Thomas Alva Edison, and they live on Teslandia, I have reason to believe other characters have similar naming conventions, but I can’t find them

King August’s ship is a Lucius class. His full name is August Claudius Lucius. Man’s ship is named after his family (they never say when it was created so it could be named after him, his dad, his grandfather, or any prior ancestor)

The music that plays when August arrives at the final battle is amazing. The whole ost is as good as mfb’s

Vargas really thought that publicly stating his plan involves making half of his own country uninhabitable wouldn’t be a highly unpopular thing

Sunburst’s whole thing (when compared to Stone specifically) is that they get to bask in the sun all day while the people of Stone are forced to live underground. And yet Sunburst’s ruler is the pastiest mf on the show

Vargas is a piece of shit that everyone hates, but his speech before Sunburst fought Flame the first time was great (this may be an intentional nod to how bad leaders can sway people through their public speaking skills. Or it may be a coincidence)

We never get the name of Flame’s new ruler. But we get the name of the 2 recurring extras on Flame’s ship

Ramon projects the lore to the other characters the same way Dynamis does

Evil Getsu, Taiyo Cyclops, and Henge Gargoyle have fur. It looks uncanny when compared to the completely metal (and whatever material lightsabers are made of) construction of the other warriors

Why didn’t Hasbro make toys of this. They did make Beywarriors, but those were a different thing based on Shogun Steel. I mean I want my Torch Fireblaze and Sabre Lion action figures
