What muscle groups help you punch harder?

Short answer; back. Long answer; Punching power is about using your whole body in a correctly chained sequence. You need to synchronize muscle groups to maximize power. Strong legs will help you drive off the ground and initiate an explosive pivot and weight transfer. A strong core will carry that energy as you titrate your trunk. A strong back will pull you into the target as you continue to pivot. A strong chest and shoulders will transmit that energy as you push into the target. The key is relaxation and synchronization. You can lift all the weight in the world and without the proper synchronization you ain't be maximizing on the power you can deliver.

I actually wonder if weightlifting is counter to martial arts muscle engagement. In bodybuilding time under tension is a valuable tool. As such you want to feel every muscle and tax it as hard as possible. On the other hand in martial arts you want to be as relaxed as possible and only use your muscles at right time. That said I lift weights and train martial arts and I think my weight lifting has only enhanced my ability to mover with power.

Anecdotally, I recall seeing a study where punching power was analyzed and fighters with bigger backs were said to generate more power. I can't recall the source. I read to much lol.
