January 23, 2020 - Japanese Wagtail or Japanese Pied Wagtail (Motacilla grandis)
Found in parts of Japan, South Korea, and sometimes eastern China and Taiwan, these wagtails live near water, including rivers, pools, lakes, coasts, and rice fields. They eat terrestrial and aquatic arthropods, particularly flies and beetles. Breeding between March and July, monogamous pairs raise two to three broods a season. Their nests are constructed in cavities near water. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks.

Recent birds. I found those two crowns near the supermarket, but that was the first and last time I saw something like that. They were almost unmoving for the several minutes I was there. Just what were they doing? Was it I love you or I will kill you? o_O But as usual Japanese crows are so pretty~
As for the second bird, I see this(?) and another one quite often there. They are so fast running around, but here it was relatively still, because it caught a dragonfly :3 (The wings of the dragonfly are under the birb ^^;;;)

Pied wagtail (Motacilla alba). Went back and forward about what to post today from yesterday's walk. Today is the 365th consecutive "Today is..." post. The swan which swam right up to within 6 inches of me at the lake, great tits collecting nesting material in the hedgerow, the flowers on a Japanese cherry tree, the wandering sailor (lovely name) growing on the railway bridge...? But I've been hoping to catch a pied wagtail for a while now so there we go. This one flew over the hedge and got into an argument with another one about which of them was going to be in the absolutely massive field as it clearly wasn't big enough for the two of them. Spend a while watching them both go at it but just too far away for a good shot. Anyway, that's enough waffle. If today's shots come out, tomorrow will be a doozy of a start to the next year of the little thing I started to stave off my temporal confusion a month into lockdown. It was never supposed to last this long, but it's one of the best things I've ever done. My next walk along the Leeds to Liverpool Canal for my Super Slow Way residency was from Church towards Clayton-le-Moors. It was a grey dreary day and the rain started to pour so I only got to walk a return route of 3.5km in total.
It’s an interesting mix of derelict industrial buildings, terrace housing right to the canal and then opening out to fields and more rural.
There was a few raspberry plants growing along the path (with small fruit on) and I also noted welsh poppies, Japanese knotweed, great burnet, comfrey, a patch of honesty, burdock, common polypody and some yellow loosestrife (on top of the other plants seen during my other walks). There was a load of Canada geese, a couple of pied wagtails bobbing about and a couple of cormorants - one drying its wings out, the other on the water diving and fishing for food.
