PepsiCo's drinks and snacks are reportedly unavailable at some stores due to "unacceptable price increases". Carrefour, one of the largest supermarket chains in France, has refused to sell PepsiCo products across its network of more than 9,000 stores in France, Spain, Italy, and Belgium. The chain has deployed in-store signs blaming "unacceptable price increases" for the move. This marks the latest high-profile spat between European supermarket chains and major grocery producers since the cost of living crisis began in the wake of Russia's war with Ukraine.
Producers have been forced to charge more for their goods due to surging wholesale costs for energy and many commodities, often resulting in so-called shrinkflation in an attempt to limit the increases. Last year, Carrefour hung signs to warn customers if goods had been cut in size but grown in price. Grocery inflation is running at a higher rate in France than in the UK.
Suppliers to UK supermarkets remain under the scrutiny of a Competition and Markets Investigation. Across the Channel, there have been several attempts by the government to bring the pace of grocery inflation down through negotiations with brands - with limited success. Further talks are due to conclude by the end of this month.
Carrefour's decision not only impacts Pepsi's eponymous soft drink brand but also products such as 7up, Cheetos, and Lay's crisps. Some products are already not available to customers in Paris.
"It doesn't surprise me at all," said shopper Edith Carpentier of the boycott. "I think there will be lots of products left on the shelves because they have become too expensive".

The first two batches of unsealed court documents related to Jeffrey Epstein reveal that several high-profile individuals, including footnotes, had their names mentioned multiple times in various materials.
Among them are two former US presidents, Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, and Prince Andrew, all of whom have been pictured with and known to associate with the disgraced financier in the past. Other names include lawyer Alan Dershowitz and magician David Copperfield.
However, it is important to note that being identified through the court documents does not necessarily mean that the individual was involved in or aware of any wrongdoing by Epstein.

According to evolutionary behavioral ecologist Carolin Dittrich and Mark-Oliver Rödel, the curator of herpetology at the Berlin Natural History Museum, female European common frogs employ clever strategies to elude overzealous male suitors during mating. Their research, published in Royal Society Open Science on October 11, highlights how hundreds of Rana temporaria frogs congregating at a natural pool can create chaos and even risk female drowning.
In these mating gatherings, multiple males may latch onto a single female, forming a tangle of frogs known as a "mating ball." Since these frogs don't engage in internal fertilization, males vie for a prime position to release sperm onto the eggs deposited by the females. This amorous grip can last several hours or even up to two days.
Dittrich stumbled upon this revelation while reviewing footage of European common frogs in a lab setting. She initially aimed to investigate male size preferences in mate selection but was taken aback by an intriguing observation: females feigning death, or what she terms "tonic immobility," to escape male clutches. This remarkable tactic showcases the resourcefulness of female frogs in navigating the complex world of amphibian courtship.

A Boeing 747 cargo plane, en route from New York to Belgium, faced an unexpected challenge when a horse managed to escape from its stall on board. The incident occurred approximately 30 minutes after takeoff. The pilot promptly contacted air traffic control to report the situation. Despite no flying-related issues, the crew decided to return to New York as they were unable to secure the horse back in its stall. During the return, the plane dumped around 20 tonnes of fuel over the Atlantic to ensure it remained within the safe weight limit for landing. Upon arrival, the pilot requested a vet to be present for the horse’s well-being. The operator of the flight, Air Atlanta Icelandic, has been notified.
