1/4 prompt: switch (367 words) part 1 - @jegulus-microfic

“Switch shifts with me on Saturday.” James leans against the break room door, blocking Lily’s way out of the coffee shop.

She startles, looking up from her phone. He grins his most loveable grin, earning a suspicious look before she locks her phone and lets her bag fall off her shoulder.

“You want my Saturday closing? What happened to 'weekend closings are cruel and having to work them should be considered unfit working conditions'?”

“Just do it. Please?” He changes tactics, trading out the grin for a pleading look; big brown eyes on display.

She doesn’t speak for a long moment and he feels himself start to get antsy. Just when he’s about to speak up again, maybe offer to buy her lunch or clean the bathrooms during their next shared shift, she rolls her eyes. “Regulus is scheduled for that shift, isn’t he.”

It should be embarrassing the way his heart skips a beat when she says Regulus’ name. It isn’t though, not when he’s transported right back to the night before, when they last shared a shift and he offered him a ride home like a gentleman, citing Regulus’ safety and the length of his commute as reasons he should give in. Eventually he did, after a barrage of insults and a promise that it was only because he didn’t want to fall asleep on the bus again.

The opportunity to spend a slow evening together and further chip away at that hardened exterior, maybe even convince him to go on a date, was too good to pass up. Never mind that he was willingly signing up for a back-to-back closing and opening.

“I’m supposed to open. Pandora opens.” He tries.

This seems to get through to her, the hopeful bubble in his chest growing as Lily purses her lips and looks off to the side.

“…deal.”

James all but whoops and Lily gives into a smile, shoving him out of the way so she can leave.

“Thank you,” He follows her out the door, throwing an arm over her shoulder. “Really, I owe you one.”

“Whatever. Just ask him out soon, yeah? I’ve got ten on Barty that you’ll be dating by next payroll.”

OOH YES here's some fancasts for my remix:

David Corenswet as Clark Kent! This is a really hard pick for me, I'm attached to Tim Daly's STAS voice for him but if I had to pick someone younger I guess this David Corenswet guy from the upcoming film looks pretty good? At least from clips I've seen of him he's got a good voice.

Brianne Tju as Lois Liando! She's a Chinese Indonesian actress and while she's young I think she's got the range. I'd love to see her twist on Dana Delaney's STAS performance because Delaney's got a fantastic hardened sassy woman voice. Tju's voice sounds great in this interview.

Haley Tju as Lucy Lane! Brianne has a sister which is PERFECT for Lois' sister Lucy! I heard Hayley's voice in Arlo the Alligator Boy as the tiger cat character and I think she sounds neat.

Michael J Woodard as Jimmy Olsen! Similarly as Haley I heard Woodard's voice on Arlo the Alligator Boy, he's the lead there as Arlo. His voice is high energy and fun! Plus he can SING which is great because I imagine Jimmy as a jack of all trades artist and shenanigans coupled with musical numbers would be perfection.

Dave Fennoy as Lex Luthor! This is locked and loaded for me. It frustrates me that no one has seen the vision here. This is the second coming of STAS Lex but BETTER. Just!! Listen to him as Bluebeard from the Wolf Among Us. This is phenomenal, the perfect voice already exists.

Toks Olagundoye as Lena Luthor! She's voiced Martha Wayne in Batman Unburied, and Cat Grant in Reign of Supermen among many roles. She'd bring the elegance Lena would need. I love her accent,,,

Donald Glover as Conner Kent/Luthor! Granted I would love a teen that can bring what he brought to Marshall Lee on Adventure Time but that performance is the Conner energy I want.

Gr33dyjay/Jhas Ean Prescott Corbitt as Rudy Jones/Parasite! While I love the Brion James' STAS voice for Parasite, I have become attached to Gr33dyjay's take on my version of Parasite. If you can bring a performance that can make me laugh like that, you're golden. If he brought just a bit of New York accent into it, even better.

ProZD/Sungwon Cho and Ellen McLain as Brainiac! I want these two to talk interchangeably and in synchronization for Brainiac. Cho serving Brau1589 realness and McLain bringing the GlaDOS good stuff. Heaven would open its gates if we ever heard a Brainiac voice like this, I believe that.

Nicole Sullivan as Livewire! This one is so, so difficult because the original Lori Petty voice for Livewire is essentially perfection. I think future takes need to find a distinct and youtuber bombastic charismatic voice for making a potentially unlikeable character fun to watch. Sullivan famously voices Shego on Kim Possible, and I think her voice has the uniqueness and sass that could revitalize Livewire. She just needs to do a version of the accent and energy.

AJ Michalka as Kara Zor El! I know Michalka's voice as Stevonnie on Steven Universe and Catra from She-Ra. I like her performance in both, it stands out and the lil rasp in her voice adds something. That gives Kara that kind of jaded world weary but still young voice. I know I haven't drawn Supergirl yet, but I've got plans.

The Black Sails Drama Highlights™️

Like, what the fuck happened over there?

Lucky for you, I was there on the ground floor (even sent in some propaganda that elicited a truly baffling response from the poll runner) because I'm a nut for goofy little tumblr polls and a nut for best little lesser-known-tv-show Black Sails.

Alright, so. @/pirate-battle (from here on out referred to as OP -- the Original Pollster) was running, as one might expect, a pirate bracket. At first glance, it wasn't explicitly presented what the criteria were, so people voted on their preference, often moving along pirate icons (Hook from Muppet Treasure Island)/characters from active fandoms (TAZ), etc etc you know the drill. (Although they later clarified they were looking for favorites, not the "best pirate.")

OP's first mistake, I think, was the assumption that a silly goofy little tumblr competition about characters archetypically ungovernable would remain silly goofy and with minimal strong language.

But this wouldn't become visible until they made their second mistake, creating a first-round poll between James 'brutually murdered a crewmate in the first episode solely to maintain power for his revenge-quest against England' Flint of Black Sails vs Stede 'notable used tissue' Bonnet of OFMD. They did recognize some of the coming danger even with that post, tagging "#I predict slaughter in the tags"

Anyway. Predictably, there was slaughter in the tags. Violent language rather typical of the tumblr that I came from (the tumblr of the early 2010s), but seemed to be utterly shocking to some OFMD fans.

Exposition time: It should be noted here that there exists at least two-ish different kinds of users of tags. Those that use them to scream personal thoughts into the void and/or whispers into their mutuals' ears, and those sneaky little fools who will peruse everyone's personal little screams/thoughts to their internet buddies. And original posters are relegated to suffer the yelling/whispers without choice.

So that slaughter, in the tags, those rivers of blood through the whispers of a fervent fanbase of a violent and freeing queer show, did reverberate around other users, regardless of etiquette.

And for some of those very sweet very uwu our flag means gay fans, that was.. very scary. (Must be all those spooky theatrics with the smoke and mirrors).

(....Idk??? Maybe I'm just battle-hardened from superwholock, but saying a tag a la "AHHHHHH I'm going to rip something's head off my BOY BETTER WIN" just doesn't really phase me?? Nor does "#I'm literally going to k/m/s if x wins." Overkill? Yeahhh... But this is tumblr. We invented overkill for the media we like. And again, this was in someone's tags.)

Moving on, as tags of that violent nature starting pulling through, and people started vigorously defending black sails as a franchise over ofmd, myself and others sent in some propaganda of my own, urging OFMD fans to really understand that Black Sails is mostly incomparable to OFMD and... Black Sails is just kinda better. Cuts deeper. Genre difference at work here.

Soapbox Side Note: Black Sails can actually be kind of game changing, especially for a show that came out in 2014. There's so much to say about it but it's hard to talk about without spoiling. I might add a link to a good 'things to know' post if you're looking to get into it.

Anyway. OP was starting to lose it.

Like, I really just don't think they had mentally prepared for how truly feral Black Sails folks were/are about that show, and how they were willing to get all HRRRRRRR CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP about it.

Additionally... OP was white, and they were super duper unprepared to engage with any of the discourse about racism that these shows dig up (They're about pirates, and a lot of pirates engaged in the slave trade. Or had freed slaves on their crew. Some even owned slaves themselves. It was complicated and pirates are typically a white fantasy vehicle and anyway I'm getting off-track--)

OP started to really fan the flames with more and more visibly emotional responses

They said "it's not a competition" between the two shows, despite it... being a literal competition...

They called people out for "gatekeeping," but didn't really define what it meant in the context of saying one gay pirate show was way better than the other.

They told Black Sails fans not to express negative feelings towards OFMD on the internet (because good representation is the god us internet queers pray to, and we wouldn't want some network exec to say "oh those mean people on the internet, better not renew the popular pirate romcom" obvi)

After some more of this, they then threatened to overturn the results of the poll entirely and remove Flint from the poll wholesale, despite the fact that he had won. (Which is hilarious if you know anything about Flint in Black Sails. He's literally That Guy That Makes People Break Democracy Attempting To Unseat Him).

Finally, after a day of trying to ignore the fact that they'd become a meme within black sails circles (one post even screenshotted then with "new copypasta just dropped" yikes), they threw in the towel. And bless them, I do think they needed the break. They were kind of going through it.

In conclusion,

The Black Sails fans pulled what I might even daresay to be,, , a fuckery "of censorship and fear",, over OFMD fans and some poor unprepared poll runner who had no skin in the game, while using only strong language and some mild mean-spirited memes (95% of which in their own tags and posts).

re : danny and his views & bonds with the friend when maria goes missing.

was chatting with beth last night and this cropped up and feel its very important to note for danny's character because by god my emotionally stunted Fool needs his friends to know ( indirectly ) how important they all are to him and how much he loves them each.

we already know that danny's rough around the edges. he's been thru it, never had a great support system, never had a strong core group of friends. family is essentially nonexistent - as much as he'd like to say his mother & half-sister are exceptions, the fact that he to this day still rarely gets the chance to get in touch often hinders those connections. if he had to claim anyone as family? it'd be the flores'. it'd be maria, and ana, mrs. flores and their entire family unit - save for maria & ana's father. there's alot that he's jaded by. alot of distrust in new, unfamiliar faces; and that really only grows stronger when it comes to maria.

he knows she's too trusting, too kindhearted, too caring to really stand up for herself most of the time. he knows she's passive and will at times let people walk all over her, use her, etc. because she feels like she's giving them something when its clear that no, they're taking and taking and they don't actually give a shit about her. and it's frustrating to him to observe, yet at the same time? he also doesn't want to snuff out that soft side of her, all her warmth and love for the world. he might be an ass, he might be jaded and cold and hard-headed but fucking hell, he doesn't want the world to make her the same way.

there's strength in being soft, strength in being kind, and while to a point yes that can also be a hindrance? danny doesn't want her to have to go through shit that may cause her to harden up instead, lose that side of her.

this all being said,

when maria goes missing, danny is down at the southern coast of texas for his welding trade training / schooling.

he gets that call from ana almost immediately after the flores' are notified that her car was found abandoned. he, initially, plans to leave immediately but, he gives ana contact info to get in touch with the rest of the group - just to be sure none of them have heard from her, seen her around, anything. i feel he reassures her, too, to allow james to keep an eye on her apartment - on juniper - since he's right there

but its the period of time between maria's disappearance and the events of the house that truly solidify danny's thoughts on the friendgroup entirely and individually. by the time he gets up there and starts searching with them, to when they've gotten out of that hell and are being treated for their injuries, danny's love for this band of misfits has grown to just shy of ( if not completely on ) the same level as his love and devotion for maria ( & ana ) has been.

within the friendgroup, julie and connie are the two danny ( & maria ) have known the longest. he knows how strong and how important both of them have been to maria. they are her ride-or-die best friends and he's seen how they've grown on one another, seen how the three look out for each other, adore one another.

he also knows how soft-hearted julie is, and so watching her put on a brave face to help look for maria, how he can tell how terrified she is during the events of the house but how she doesn't let that fear paralyze her - she keeps going, she keeps helping, keeps doing whatever she can to stay alive, help the others, even when her face is tear-stained, even when she looks like she's on the verge of cracking? there's a hell of a respect danny has for her for it, for pushing past it to keep fighting, keep looking, to get out. how julie fights to stay optimistic at the start, during their searches around newt. a gentle voice trying to reassure that maria must be okay, must be alive, that they'll find her, that they'll bring her home.

for connie, he sees how she is during the entire ordeal - still level-headed, still trying to be rational, still trying to do what she can to help get them out. how even when she's exhausted, or hurt, she's trying her damn best to figure ways out, how to disarm all the familys' strange-ass traps, how to work all their locks and technical shit strewn all across the property and in the tunnels so they have a better chance. even moreso, how she helps keep him grounded. how when danny's frustrations, his temper, starts getting the better of him, she can snap him back, get him to reel it in again - at least to a point. he appreciates it.

danny's overprotective of them both and would ensure they didn't have any of the family on their asses so they could get shit done, even if he's already running close to exhaustion. they're maria's best friends and the last thing he wants is to fail to keep either of them safe and alive.

likewise, he sees how cautious sonny is throughout everything - how he tries to keep his mind clear, focused on little details, focused on the important things, focused on the places they've gone, what the cops have made public about where they've supposedly "thoroughly searched". danny trusts sonny to go over shit with a fine-toothed comb and steer them in more pinpoint directions, make sense of the bullshit the cops try to cover up. and danny's relieved they have someone on their end who can analyze all of the shit his own brains' too hazed to think clearly on and make some shred of sense of it all.

leland, especially, earns alot of danny's respect in the entire ordeal. both being one of the newer faces of the group, also just his background in general, danny had a half a mind believing that leland wouldn't have joined them in trying to find her - selfish jock stereotype, y'know? - but frankly speaking, leland both fucking stuns danny and honestly makes him ridiculously proud that he's part of the group. because frankly who knows where'd be without him being able to actually full-on fight back against the family? but its not just lee's physical strength, its also his strength in heart, in optimism like julie, that i feel danny appreciates. the reassurances, the checking in on everyone. knowing that he's got someone to have his back if needed in a struggle, if things went south. i think leland was danny's bigger surprise in all of this, and when they get the hell out of there i feel - not in the dires, in routes where they're both recovering - danny does make it a point to tell him so.

all of this to say, dannys bond with all of the friends deepens so much over the span of this entire situation. hes seeing all theyre doing to try and find her, all their worry and concern and determination and devotion and honestly? it makes him love them so much more for it.

dannys always been so over careful over cautious on her behalf with new faces and theres always that nagging worry in the back of his mind like am i sure these people are good to be around her, is she going to be safe and cared for, am i not looking after her well enough to make sure shes surrounded by good people? and this misfit group proves that to him day after day with this whole situation. "id kill for each of them would die for each of them" sentiment truly in full force after all this. guy loves his friends- all of them.

maria's one of the most if not at that point, the most important person in his life. she was there for him, constantly, at his worst moments. she was there to help pull him back on his feet and change the course he was going down in his life. she's someone precious to him and there was always a fear at the back of his mind that there was no possible way the others could have felt similarly-

and they proved him wrong.

and he fucking loves them for it. and hes fucking proud to have friends like them.

Not to get overly dramatic or anything, but I FUCKING LOVE LUTHEN RAEL. I'm not entirely sure what kind of love it is - like, I don't know if I want to be his trusted lieutenant or his apprentice or his lover or his ship mechanic or just some secret Rebel cell member who goes all starry eyed when he drops by. I just know I love him and I don't even care what we find out about him and his past, the man can do no wrong in my eyes. (I reserve the right to change my mind about this if he betrays Cassian in the end. Or not. I love a good villain.)

I said in an earlier ask that Cassian is the space James Bond, but that's actually not true. Luthen is. He's got the swagger and the coldness, he's got the secret contacts, the false identities, the cutting-edge tech. And clearly, he's got the tragic backstory. I can totally imagine Luthen sliding up to a bar and ordering the galactic equivalent of a martini, shaken not stirred, as he cases the room. I headcanon that he's the one who teaches Cassian that sometimes, unfortunately, it becomes as necessary to kill an ally as an enemy. And I can also imagine Luthen brooding over a lost love or colleague, the guilt and sorrow of his memories rendering him almost self-destructive in the pain it causes him.

I like that Luthen is a morally grey character. I love the mystery and complexity of not being entirely certain of his intentions or motivations or the depths he's willing to sink to in order to win. I love how easy it seems for him to transition from the hardened spy to the cultured, high society antiques dealer and yet how weary he seems of doing it. I love the dissonance between his cover trade, which is highly problematic and damaging, and the great good he is accomplishing with its proceeds. I love his ruthlessness and his intense hatred of the Empire and his absolute JOY when Cassian comes to him at the end of the season. I love knowing almost nothing about him and yet I want to know everything.

P.S. I can't talk about Luthen without saying how magnificent Stellan Skarsgård's performance is. It is just phenomenal.

P.P.S. I really want to write more about him. I haven't felt this passionate about a character for a long time.
