Hello!
What kind of outfits/clothing pieces were a staple in Demri Parrott's everyday wear?
Thanks so much!
Barbara Dearaujo: “Demri was a fashion nut. She loved everything vintage. Victorian style dresses, 70’s stuff, overalls and combat boots. She wore things no one else could even try to pull off without looking like a weirdo but she always seemed to make the weirdest things look cute and cool. I’m pretty sure Demri was one of the girls who started the so-called ‘Seattle Grunge Look’, for girls at least. Demri was not a rocker chick, she totally had her very own style going on that we all secretly wanted to emulate.
In the early 90’s she dressed in all kinds of crazy yet cute clothes, anything retro or vintage. She loved long dresses, skirts, tutus, overalls and Doc Martins, hand-made clothes, she never really wore jeans and t-shirts, it was always something you’d never think of wearing but looked great on her and made you wish you would thought of this type of thing but even if you had it probably wouldn’t of looked as cool on you. She had that tiny little body that looks great in clothes.
She always wore her hair really long like to her butt or longer and she had thick wavy auburn hair. It was usually knotted and dred locked here and there but knotted or not it always looked cool. She wore black nail polish and when she wore make up she used maybe some black mascara and red lips but she didn’t usually wear a lot of make up, maybe except for lipstick when she went out. She was also the first girl I met who used her lipstick to add blush to her cheeks.” [5]

Ryan Kalsbeck: “Layne and Dem had that full on vintage clothing styles mixed with a hippie, new grunge rock twist. Homemade glass beaded long necklaces and bracelets, funky hats, hair sticks. Dem had pink lace and satin knickers that were real and from the 1900s.”

Sherri: “She would always wear the rolled up overalls with black tights. She was so cute and original. Biggest smile, she always lit up the room. Heart of gold!”

Jacque: “As to her clothing style, it was kind of hippy chick but distinctively Demri.”

Kathleen Austin: “Someone once told me she would show up at a club in an outfit and the next night there would be several girls copying it.
She could pull articles of clothing that no one would think to combine and she would look adorable. She once designed a skirt from boxer shorts. I saw it on paper. As far as I know, it never came to fruition.” [6]

Shawna Murphy: “I had one of her necklaces ‘Forever’. It was like black cut glass stones, three strands with a gold clasp. She wore a lot of old-timey costume jewelry.” [6]

Tracy Johnson: “She did not want to be known as the girlfriend of a rock star and did whatever the hell she pleased but was friendly and personable to everyone she met. She wanted to be a model that’s why there are so many pictures of her posing. One thing that was funny. We were in Canada (canvouver, as we called it) and Dem couldn’t find Layne and was drunk and pissed off. But she has to pee, so we stopped and she walked in this alley, many people were around, and she just squatted and peed, then pulled up her long johns with her tutu tucked in the back of it and started to walk away. She was gonna find him come hell or high water, even with the whole backside of her tutu tucked into her long johns and wearing converse, of course.
A lot of things she wore didn’t go together, like long johns with big baggy overall shorts and a frilly blouse with cowboy boots. It doesn’t make a lot of sense but you would have to know Demri to understand.” [6]

Here are a few more of the more well-known Jack Plasky pics of Demri. Jack later got into the “colors” aspect of his established work. Jack’s pics were those that I first knew about, as were Krista Kay’s back in the early years pre-internet. Unfortunately, about 11 years ago, we stupid falling out and never had a chance to reconnect. Although he followed my personal IG account, we never had an actual conversation. I regret that as I really wanted to. • Jack’s work has left a lasting legacy, not only for him, but for Demri, which is important to so many of us. • Remembering Jack tonight. Our sincerest condolences to his family, fellow friends and loved ones. • • • —————————————————— #nehistripesseattle #jackplasky #jackplaskycolors #seattlesound #demriparrott #demrinxana #restinpeace #fuckcancer #gonetoosoon #lastinglegacy #demriparrottmurphy (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce-LA00LpOG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Air-conditioned hell: 36 hours underground at Theatre 140
Brussels has just experienced an amazing “underground” week. By that we mean what is off, off-off, free, anti-conformist, unconventional and logically anti-commercial.
However, it has been a long time since this movement has made a big splash for producers and other managers.
At "140", the dynamic and singular Jo Dekmine had invited Brussels to descend with him the steps that lead to hell. Of revolt indeed, there was much question. Liberty also and had it not been for the service, the theater on avenue Plasky would have cheerfully mentioned it.
Barricades of baffles
The public: in general, he followed. Somewhat worried at first by this sonic orgy, this "high-voltage" breaking barricades of speakers, he nonetheless gradually resumed contact with music and its bewitching powers and if he suffered from the eardrum at not wanting to metamorphose into an ostrich before this liberation from the guts, he nonetheless understood the chance which was his of being able to finally approach and globalize a movement which has taken on a decisive importance in society. However, if one should not take too seriously groups such as Alan Jack Civilization, the baroque jazz trio, the Here and Now whose intentions, too cerebral and often puerile, irritate more than they touch. The same is not true of Ten Years after and especially of the Nice who found a tone both experimental and original.
The latter in particular, which one wonders if they are not in the process, like the Blood Sweet and Tears and the Chicago Transit Authority, of carving out a prominent place in the world of pop music, are all remarkable musicians.
Ars longa vita brevis
Their music is an alloy of classical, jazz and beat. Organist Keith Emerson, whose sophisticated virtuosity has not ceased to amaze, has proven himself, by far, the best musician of these 36 hours. Another particularity of Nice, their keen interest in Vivaldi, Rachmaninoff, Sibelius, Dylan whose works they adapt with real happiness. We discover with them modern music adapted to a modern sensibility. The fact is too rare to be reported. The public has also perfectly understood who applauded them at length.
If I did not address the “underground film” part, it is because it seemed to me the weak point of the program. If we except one or the other short animation film such as "Erlebnisse der Puppe", presented two years ago at the Knokke festival, the films screened seemed to me devoid of interest and it is not not the fact of having them sometimes synchronized with a musical score which added any meaning to them.
In summary, a warm attempt, crowned with success, which will have had the merit of situating, with imprecision certainly, the value and the impact of a music which, underground as it is, IS one of today's music and probably the music of tomorrow.

💬 Spencer: “I drove Mara, Kim and Demri to Eugene, Oregon one time. We stopped at Chuck’s (Demri’s uncle, I assume) in Seattle to pick up Demri. Her boyfriend’s band had just gotten signed that day and she had his demo tape on hand. We listened to ‘Queen of the Rodeo’ over and over again.” 💬 Kim: “Demri was a best friend to me and Mara Whelan. The three of us hitchhiked from Granite Falls to Los Angeles in six rides. We would sing Puff the Magic Dragon at truck stops and get rides in the long haulers. Our bond was broken by the evil nature of addiction.” 💬 Mara Whelan: “Demri and I lived together, slept together as sister spoons, hitchhiked all up and down the coast and back and forth to Seattle from Everett a million times. We lived in Seattle together in multiple places. When we didn’t live together, even when the drugs came into play, we never lost each other.”
Photo by Jack Plasky at Demri’s apartment, Seattle, probably early 1990s. Left to right: Karen, Demri, Heidi, Tamale; Mara, Kim, Sheri, Denise, and Ronda. This picture was given to Fabiola by Rosheen at Demri’s memorial.
Thank you very much as usual to the lovely Memories of Demri on instagram (very much missed here on tumblr!)

Demri by Jack Plasky, at her apartment, unknown exact date.
💬 Jack Plasky: “Demri was beautiful, and proud of her body. Once she created (lightning fast) her little set to work in, those clothes came flying off. I tried asking her questions ... but I could not get the words out, and grabbed my camera and started shooting. When we shot, we never talked about what we wanted to achieve, but at the end we both got what we wanted. We were one.
Memory thanks to @memoriesofdemri

Via Jack Plasky’s brother utterly stunned & saddened to hear; Repost from @flowersplasky • I am very sad and heartbroken to tell you all that my brother, Jack, passed away on May 27, 2022. He was battling colorectal cancer for the last 3 months and did everything he could to survive this horrible disease. It was not until today that I was able to unlock his computer and communicate to the many wonderful contacts that he made through Facebook. Jack and I spent a lifetime enjoying photography. Our father taught us everything about cameras and photography since we were little kids. Jack was much more talented than me and I enjoyed his many postings as much as you did. His life story is unique and so different from the stories of many of us. He truly lived outside of the box and he loved sharing his photography, particularly the beautiful flowers he shot and his edits, which made the flowers even more vibrant. Many have expressed how much they enjoyed starting their day off with his beautiful posts. I hope you will continue to remember the joy he brought to all of us. Your responses to his posts meant more than you will ever know. Best Wishes, Ed Plasky - https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce9ZQ-6vK-x/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Why Do We Love...
Demri Parrott
Demri Parrott was one of the muses we knew about later. She was not a childhood idol (like Shannen Doherty or Drew Barrymore) and I think not even a teenage idol (like Jane Asher or Lee Starkey), but she came a bit later in life (like Bebe Buell or Tina Aumont).
Tumblr media
[August 1991, by Alison Dyer]
We first new about Demri via the Vintage Groupies Livejournal. It was a great community where all the members created entries for their favourite muses. As usual, the 1960s ladies, the Beatlegirls and the Stones girls were the most popular, but every now and then there were the 1970s baby groupies, and also lesser known women, like Asian girlfriends, or the 1990s babes. And one of them was Demri!
Tumblr media
[1992 - Demri and Layne at Rock Candy Seattle in benefit for AIDS]
We didn't know ANYTHING about Demri when a user uploaded some pictures (back then there were always the same 4 photos with no information about the year or the photographer) and a short biography (basically the info about her obituary).
She was the girlfriend of Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley, and an artist and model on her own, very beautiful and creative, and a true shining light according to those who knew her. We were shocked that she died aged just 27 and, as with the other muses, we just started collecting photos of her from the net and looking for more information about her.
Tumblr media
[Demri in 1988]
As with all our other muses, we built a little website for her (in a platform called piczo that was very popular back then) and even some of her actual friends contacted me, or I contacted them for information about some pictures (Barbara, Fabiola, Pony, Jack). It was great and a lovely way to keep her memory alive. I think they loved that a foreign girl, who was just a little girl when Demri passed away, now was sharing all her love of her on the net!

[1992 - Demri and Fabiola H. Gonzalez in Arlington, by Cliff Feulner]
Now we keep looking for Demri's best pictures and the most accurate information about her. We found amazing instagram accounts, facebook pages and tumblr blogs that are keeping her memory alive with respect and no judgement. Even her friend Amber texts me from time to time!
