Random spoilerific reasons to read Star Trek novels, with little to no context:
Ro/Quark is a thing
A Jem'Hadar joins DS9, tries to fit in but eventually snaps and tries to kill everybody
You learn the origins and final fate of the Borg
A thinly-veiled Dr. House clone joins the Voyager crew
Geordi briefly has 2 girlfriends at once (due to different writers not co-ordinating enough, but still)
There's a TOS book that's a musical
There are YA stories about Jake and Nog making mischief on DS9
YA stories about Worf, Geordi, Picard, Beverly, Kirk, Spock and McCoy at SFA
YA series about the Kelvinverse gang (including Gaila!) as cadets, taking on a drug problem at SFA and a very unique Borg scout in San Francisco
We very briefly meet the people who are to Q what the Q are to humanity
Janeway/Chakotay is a thing
Kirk's first mission in command of the Enterprise! Erm, at least twice.
Kirk was married between TOS and TMP
Her name was Lori
In the future, you have yearly marriage contracts that you either update or you don't and I think that's amazing
Trip didn't die! He faked his death to join Section 31 and go undercover as a Romulan
It's not great, tbh
The ENT books get better after the Romulan wars though, it's proper founding of the Federation stuff
We meet Jack Crusher (erm, the OG) when 4 timelines start overlapping and he's a bit unhinged
Teenage Kirk stole a car and his choice was go to jail or join Starfleet
What happened when Voyager got home? Seven broke up with Chakotay like 30 pages in
Kirk gets cloned, and his clone becomes the sub of an evil invincible super genius and its all very gay
George Kirk was Robert April's first officer on the first ever mission of the unnamed starship with the Naval Construction Contract 1701
Robert is a hard-core pacifist and has to turn command over to George whenever it's time to fire weapons
Data becomes fully human for a couple of days and it's really sweet
They never say "wristwatch" or "phone", it's always "wrist chrono" or "personal comm"
There are gays but they don't say that word because it's the 1990's and Rick Berman runs the franchise
Spock has a son in the past with Zarabeth
Everyone in the post-Nemesis era does spy missions all the time non stop, as if Starfleet has abandoned exploring the cosmos for doing Space Mission: Impossible
Bashir does it better than anyone else, he takes on Section 31 from the inside
Remember Control? It's from the novels, except the novels do it SO MUCH BETTER.
Remember how we never found out who Future Guy was? We do.
It's very underwhelming, nobody we know
We find out how the Romulans and Vulcans split
Surak was a Vulcan internet blogger
A Borg Cube eats Pluto
Janeway dies
Janeway gets better
At least one TOS book features a wizard
There's a Star Trek TOS/Here Come the Brides crossover novel
It had cameos from The Doctor (as in, Who), Han Solo, Starbuck and others
Whole book series about Section 31
Whole book series about the Department of Temporal Investigations
One time they do the Bill and Ted thing to escape confinement and it works
Wanna know how Riker and Troi met?
Wanna know what Picard got up to on the Stargazer?
Andorians have 4 sexes and it's very complicated
Data comes back from the dead as Data 2.0, and it was fresh and exciting because it happened long before ST: Picard did it twice.
Lal comes back too and we get father/daughter android stuff! They have a home and everything but keep having to save the universe
One time Mirror Seven is led around on a leash naked on Terok Nor
Geordi becomes captain of the USS Challenger, decides it's not for him because plot, and goes back to engineering on the Enterprise
Kirk is shot on the bridge and dies
Kirk gets better
They watch 3D holos of old Doctor Who episodes in the Enterprise rec room
The Enterprise also has an AI named Moira, which was Zora long before Zora
The TOS crew get together for one last mission. About three times.
There's a Perry Mason book except it's about Kirk's lawyer from that TOS episode
Data 2.0 owns and runs a massive gambling empire on Orion
Spock keeps randomly showing up everywhere in the TNG era
Scotty keeps randomly showing up everywhere in the TNG era
Bones keeps randomly showing up everywhere in the TNG era
You're on Tumblr so you already know about Killing Time
There's a guy named McKenzie Calhoun and he's a total badass and captains a ship of weirdos and misfits
Kirk comes back from the dead, saves the galaxy repeatedly, has an intersex child (who identifies as male) with a Romulan/Klingon hybrid
Kirk beats up Worf
Kirk's child has superpowers
Kirk's child saves the galaxy at age 6
The Kirk stuff is 100% ignored in the other novels
About 50% of the novels are ignored in the other 50%, and the ones that are meant to be in direct continuity with each other aren't always quite
Just like the TV shows and movies, then
Lwaxana Troi meets Q, and it goes as well as you'd expect
Someone tells Data, yes you idiot you had emotions all along and he's like, oh shit you're right
McCoy is left in command of the Enterprise as a joke by Kirk, who is then immediately kidnapped
Ro Laren is captain of Deep Space Nine
Picard/Beverly is a thing, they get married and have a child named Rene. No running away and raising your kid in secret here
Riker and Troi are married, serve on the Titan together with a bunch of adorable weirdos and have a daughter named Tasha
You get to watch all the 24th century characters die horribly in the end along with their entire universe. Holy fuck it's a bleak horror show. Personally, I love it. But if that's not your cup of tea I'd skip the Coda trilogy

The heart of the Universe
We have encountered extraordinary characters in the Star Trek universe over the last five decades. One of those amazing characters is none other than Dr. Beverly Crusher, the Chief Medical Officer of the Starship Enterprise-D. Not only was she an accomplished doctor and scientist, but she was also a mother. This is where her story showcases just what kind of person Beverly is.
Tumblr media
Let's take a quick trip down memory lane, shall we?
Beverly didn't exactly have the most amazing upbringing. She was orphaned at a young age and was raised by the only family she knew; her Grandmother, Felisa. Beverly mentioned she was an awkward child, often lonely, and didn't have many friends. She survived a cataclysmic disaster on Arvada III before settling down in Caldos with her Grandmother. Beverly found solace in helping others and it gave her a sense of gratification and she decided to take those ambitions to Starfleet to become a Doctor. This is where she meets Jack Crusher, they marry and have a son named Wesley. Her new life with her family was a stark comparison to how she grew up and for Beverly, life couldn't be more perfect… or so she thought.
When Jack died in a Mission accident, Beverly was now a single mom of her 5-year-old son and was determined to make his life the best possible. She continued her career in Medicine and Science, even becoming a Commander. She also made sure Wesley had every opportunity to grow his interest and become who he needed to be. This leads them to Enterprise-D, where Beverly is now the Chief Medical Officer and her son can have hands-on experience with his interests. Though, her complicated relationship with the Captain, didn't deter her from doing what was best for not only Wesley but for herself. However, as Jean-Luc and Beverly grew closer, her relationship with Wesley grew apart.
As Wesley got older, he realized that following in his parent's footsteps and joining Starfleet was not the path he should be on. Wesley joined the Travelers, magical space and time beings, leaving Beverly behind. This was the hardest decision for Beverly because she always wanted to make sure to be there for Wesley and now that he was on a path she didn't fully understand, she was completely out of her element. This wasn't a typical empty nest syndrome, this was complete uncertainty about if she will ever see her son again. And sadly, she never really did…
Tumblr media
Beverly's career and love life (to Jean-Luc Picard) was the only thing she had left in her life. Her family was now gone and all she had was her crew. She loved her crew of the Enterprise and they loved her just the same, but Beverly had a void in her she never thought she could fill. She wanted more children, but because the on-again off-again relationship she had with the Captain was uncertain, she didn't think it would happen. Especially because he made it very clear he didn't want to have a family. Yes, she could have moved on to someone else, but in typical "Beverly" fashion, she put others before herself and loved wholeheartedly and loved Jean-Luc very much to the point that it hurt. I do not believe she could have easily moved on and she wouldn't want a child just out of need. That part of her life was now over and she had to figure out what to do next.
After one last attempt at their relationship, Beverly and Jean-Luc broke up and she left the Enterprise. Even though Beverly was now alone and with only her career at hand, she was surprised to find out she was pregnant. Even though she attempted to tell Jean-Luc the news, she had a hard time getting it to him as he was always in some sort of danger. This is where Beverly's maternal instincts kicked in and she felt she had a second chance at being a mother and she wasn't going to let anyone hurt her child, not even the father. As much as she wanted to be a family with Jean-Luc, she couldn't in good conscience risk her child's life of the uncertainty of being the son of Jean-Luc Picard. It was bad enough that she had to endure the pain of his life being at risk, she couldn't do that to her unborn child. And after losing Wesley, she couldn't risk losing another child.
Tumblr media
Beverly left her career and her entire life behind to raise and protect her son, Jack. This time was going to be different in Beverly's mind. With Wesley, she gave him the space he needed to grow and didn't hover over him, but she still lost him nonetheless. Since Jack was her second chance, she wanted to be a part of his life in a different way, expose him to many great things and share that experience with him. Though Jean-Luc was not far from her mind, she kept him close by telling Jack stories about him and playing songs that Jean-Luc shared. She made it clear his father was a wonderful man, even if he couldn't be there with them. Beverly would have never exposed Jack to being a fatherless child, but she never could shake the feeling that if the universe knew who Jack's father was, the consequences would be dire.
As we saw in the recent Star Trek: Picard installment, Beverly was right. Beverly could no longer protect Jack from the villainous beings that were now after him, and she had to turn to the only family she knew: The Crew of the Enterprise. Beverly felt she failed in protecting Jack, but after a week of letting the news that he is a father settle, and seeing just the kind of danger Jack was in, Jean-Luc reassured Beverly that it was a testament to her strength, love, and loyalty that kept Jack safe all this time.
Finding out that Jack was special with abilities beyond her comprehension, didn't help in the matter. Losing one son to an unpredictable cosmic journey, but both sons? Beverly was always the hardest on herself and so failure wasn't far from her mind. She had to endure the most difficult challenges while trying to save Jack but the end didn't happen like she expected. Her life had always ended in a heartbreaking manner, losing those she loves and leaving her behind. But instead, Jack was saved, Jean-Luc was saved, the universe was saved… It was a feeling Beverly never had experienced before: relief and gratification.
Tumblr media
Many may think Beverly was wrong in keeping Jack away from Jean-Luc, and many are right. However, when you break down just what Beverly had gone through in her life and just what kind of man Jean-Luc was, it is only a human reaction to fall victim to fear. But it wasn't just fear she had, she had maternal instincts. Like Beverly said:
"As a mother, your whole being is about protecting your child"
She may have done the wrong thing but she did it for the right reasons. As much as we associate Beverly with her fierce determination, dedication, and empathy, we also must showcase the love she has for not only her children but the love of Jean-Luc, her friends, her crew, and her patients. This is what makes Beverly what fans call "The heart of the crew" -- But I want to take it a step further and say she is "The heart of the universe" -- willing to always put herself last, and as a mother, she is willing to sacrifice everything for her children no matter what the consequences that may be. Being a mother has always been Beverly's top priority since the day Wesley was born. It is that protective nature and unconditional love she has for her children that make her such an amazing character. That IS Beverly Crusher.
Beverly may be a flawed character but it is those flaws that fans love about her and understand her the most. We understand her drive, we understand her commitment and we understand that no matter the best intentions, it doesn't always come out the way we want it. Beverly is the fan's character, the most relatable. She has taught us that Love is always the most powerful and most rewarding gift of all.
Happy Mother's Day

for the Star Trek ask (I hope I'm not repeating some from ages ago): 6. Character you feel a show could have done without? 17. What role would you have aboard a starship and why? 25. Favourite villains? 44. if the ds9 crew ended up in today's world, what would amaze them the most (positively or negatively) and 50: a random headcanon?
Thank you so much for the ask <3
6) that’s an easy one. JACK CRUSHER!!! Honestly, the most unnecessary Star Trek character ever. I can rant so much about him. He’s definitely just a self insert character for Terry Matalas, that didn’t even make sense in some points, didn’t behave like a 25 year old and certainly didn’t look like it either (definitely wrong casting choice though I don’t have anything against Ed Speelers. He was just too old and looks it which is okay but doesn’t fit the character). Urgh. I really hope they won’t keep him for Star Trek Legacy but I’m afraid they will and that annoys me because I would love a Raffi and Seven spin-off but not with him.
17) maybe security or if I went into science an archaeologist. They’re close to my real life choices and I don’t know if I’d fit other Starfleet departments. Though I do have to say I would love to just live in the world and not necessarily as a Starfleet officer
25) oooh. Let me think. I guess maybe Q? I have troubles thinking of villains I like right now😂
44) Bell Riots are next year so I guess we almost have the answer there. I think the social structure would probably make them sad. The environmental pollution as well. What would amaze them positively? Hm. Nothing comes to my mind 🙈
50) okay I’ve talked about it before but it’s my favourite one: Katrina Cornwell has her own shuttle (so far it’s canon) but because she is so much on the run, flying from one ship/space station to the next, it has become her home and she furnished it accordingly

Ok! (I'm rolling up my sleeves here.)
Commenting on the thoughts of @predawnite and @yourbuerokrat2
What if at the end of STP S3, Beverly, Jack Crusher, or someone else is killed.
Picard is sobbing while cradling the body of whomever. Probably Beverly, imho.
Q returns, or you hear his voice say something to the effect of,
"You have the power, Jean-Luc. Save her."
With Q's guidance/ a quick tutorial in Q powers, Picard restores Beverly's life.
Picard realizes after everything that has been happening that he no longer belongs with Beverly, Riker, Laris, etc and joins Q. He is so different, and his friends have changed so much too.
It's time that Picard moves on.
Picard has ascended and embarks on his new life with Q.
omg THAT would be amazing. Maybe Q already gave him powers, or he is given those powers at the climactic end when Beverly is killed.
Just picking on Beverly because she seems like she'd be the likely victim.

star trek picard episodes 1-3 thots
THE THOTS ARE BACK
Tumblr media
So this post directly follows on from the angry freakout I had earlier this week where I live incepted myself into watching picard season 3 ride or die, because sometimes you've just got to go down to the highway and watch the car crash in person.
also, I reminded myself that I dont care about other people's star trek opinions, only my own. therefore, I needed to have star trek opinions.
here are my thots, here be spoilers
first off: gates mcfadden's face lift is fucking spectacular, the woman looks amazing. Her eye sockets are so sculpted, her cheeks are so taut, her jawline is so sharp, and yet she still looks her age. this is what growing old in the socialist utopia promises: you too can look like a woman who has not actually had to work since the early 90s. also credit to everyone looking great in their 60s, 70s and 80s.
second: jack crusher (the second??!?! how does that work anyway), is so fucking hot.
third: I went into this knowing broadly what happened in episode 1 and 2, and that episode 3 the twist is changelings, because I saw a spoiler yesterday on una mccormack's tumblr. changelings is interesting, because to do a ds9 plot in tng is bold, especially when you can't bring odo back since ya man rene audeboujournois died a few years ago. worf doesnt even mention him by name: ffs worf raffi was alive during the dominion war, she'll know who fucking odo is. he's odo.
fourth: the moment I was like, I am here for the long run was Worf's whole introduction and his everything. I think its always hard to give credit to michael dorn for being so great because he has to act stoic through SO much makeup and he just is worf, but honestly, it felt like if they'd just put the black hair on him he would have looked exactly the same as he did thirty years ago. Like they had to make his hair white just to make time have passed. The man is so well preserved, maybe he also has a very good surgeon, but I am down to believe that he just Is Like That. Damn.
five: worf is the best thing that happened to raffi, I love them together, they are the best team.
six: all of this is going to fall apart when brent spiner comes to Lore it all up, as that is obviously what was stolen from the daystrom institute alongside the portal gun.
seven: so episode 3 won me over because I had kind of forgotten how good an actor patstew is when he really gives it?? because fuck me the scene between beverly and picard where they talk about how the whole baby thing happened was so good, so subtle, so emotive. It also crucially made sense: they had tried to be together. they had failed to be together. crusher was tired of his shit, he's always been a terrible partner and it just didn't work, but then she was pregnant and ready to leave anyway, ready to move on, so just went, fine, breakup over, beverly out. Also, reminded picard that the universe keeps trying to kill him, that he'd basically killed her husband and her son, and she had no other family....thanks for the sperm donation, I'm gonna go retire and have a redo. I was already 100% team bev but now I am 200% team bev, also fuck off picard with your 'oh yeah actually I wouldn't have been my horrible abusive father fuck you for taking me at my word, my whole /r/childfree carefree bachelor attitude, how could I have known anything about myself in my early 60s, I was but a boy, we could have had it all, rolling in the deep' etc. Father and husband fuck the fuck off you traditionalist old bastard you just told us you had broken up for the FIFTH TIME.
eight: should have reserved point seven for seven herself but: SEVEN!!!! I am fucking going to do it, I'm going to write the seven of nineifesto. She is so fucking deep waters, shes been so betrayed by authority figures none of who actually give a shit about whats best for her, just for what is best for the story, she is not meant to be in starfleet ffs, she got the worst possibly mentors in janeway and picard. also seven and raffi just need to hang out with worf and tell the rest of them to fuck off.
nine: captain shaw was right and he should say it. He was having a nice time, just running his ship, doing his duty, when he gets fucking hijacked by two guys who literally are mavericks and crash ships all the time, who are manipulating seven, who MUTINIES, and they literally destroy his ship and ruin his life in the space of about 12 hours and he saw through their bullshit within 30 seconds of the 'surprise inspection' gig. justice for captain liam shaw, only sane man on the titan.
ten: look, the show is never going to stick the landing, but like all star trek, it is a journey. there are changelings, there is worf, there is raffi, there is my forthcoming 200k seven of nine fix it fic, there is so much to enjoy, and also there was the absolutely awful deaging makeup, please stop doing it, it made me feel seasick.
anyway these are my thots on yaoi kthxbye

Beverly Crusher's secret
It was what I feared and although I'm not totally in love with it, but I saw a comment on Twitter--about our characters being flawed. That interested me. As amazing of a character that Beverly is, she's human with the regular human flaws. Because of that, I am making a conscious effort to make sense of this secret.
The way I see it, she reacted totally out of fear--which is an understandable reaction. My guess is all the attempts on Jean-Luc's life occurred right after Nemesis. The Romulan Empire is in free-fall due to the power vacuum Shinzon created. She wants to tell him that she's pregnant, but he's kidnapped. She probably tries a few times, but she's interrupted by urgent ship's business. In the meantime, there are more attempts on Jean-Luc's life.
Finally, she realizes that she can't stay on the Enterprise--it's too dangerous. But she can't tell Jean-Luc because she knows he'll just talk her into staying. He'll give all these wonderful arguments about the importance of duty and how they can't give in to fear. I'm sure she knew exactly what arguments he'd give. Knowing that he'd never leave Starfleet, and worried about her son's safety, she keeps quiet and resigns. Like I said, a rash decision based on fear. However, like she said, she's lost a lot of people to space and it's just too much.
(Note: as an empath, Deanna knows Beverly's keeping a secret. She can feel the fear but Beverly refuses to talk to her about it)
Jean-Luc does retire five years later. She could've told him then (in my opinion, she should've), but I can understand why she didn't. It's been FIVE YEARS! I think in her mind, it was too late. How do you tell someone they had their baby five years after the fact? I can imagine her wanting to go to France to have him meet Jack and she keeps chickening out. It's just been so long and she's too embarrassed.
By the time she finds the courage to tell Jack who his father is, it's too late. He's been without a father for so long, he's not interested in meeting him.

The Hunt for Red October is either an amazing movie and the best thing to ever come from the Jack Ryan/Tom Clancy oeuvre or I just only like Jack Ryan when he's married to Beverly Crusher.

Rambling Picard season 3 thoughts...
Beware of spoilers.
Two episodes in and... it's not terrible.
Though it's already groaning under the weight of so much ~Nostalgia~ that I worry the whole thing's gonna collapse soon with a splintering crash.
Even the musical score with its callback stings & themes is achingly nostalgic.
Michael Dorn looks amazing. And I think we got more Klingon Eviscerating Action in one brief scene than we did in all of TNG + DS9 combined.
Pacing & editing is sluggish. Like they're stretching out what should be a TNG two-parter into a whole season.
Dialogue is snappy and feels honest. Especially the exchanges with Captain Shaw. It creeps up on Joss Whedon levels of quippiness without going over the line, which is just this side of delightful.
Vedic? Vadic? Vadik? Whozat?
Am I supposed to recognize her??
And how does (a presumably) private citizen afford, assemble, arm, and crew a giant starship with enough weaponry to shame the flagship of the Federation? That seems absurd.
Like if Zuckerberg sunk all his Facebook cash into a superyacht capable of nuking a US aircraft carrier and nobody noticed.
Back on Earth: some supervillain picked up a multi-story Starfleet building (on Earth!!) lifted it into a Sky Hole then dropped it a few blocks away, instantly pulverizing it and whatever it landed on into rubble!
And the death toll is... 117 people? Huh.
Oh but then I guess transporter technology and super good 25th century emergency services probably kept that number from being 10x so I guess that's (grumble) believable.
Still, as terrorist incidents go this one seems kind of low key. If they can vaporize any building (on Earth!!) why not go for like Federation HQ? Instead they hit a "recruitment center" and killed 117 recruits + staff which is... lame? Guess we wait and see.
Does Jean Luc not remember having sex with Beverly Crusher??
Which I though canonically never happened?
And Beverly secretly got pregnant, had a child, raised that child to age 30-something, and managed to keep it a secret from everybody. Huh^2.
Jack Crusher has a severe case of British Accent which makes sense because the actor is british... but how?
Presumably his mom raised him and she doesn't sound like him at all. If Beverly stashed him on her family's Scottish Ghost Fucker Planet he'd sound more like James Doohan's Scotty than James Bond. So confused here. Guess we wait and see.
Unironically LOVE Captain Shaw. Sure, he's a stick in the mud and meant to infuriate us viewers but honestly? He's the first naval officer on this goddamn show who acts like a real naval officer. I sure hope he doesn't die.
The Ferengi looked & sounded like an italian mobster in a Ferengi costume.

Okay so Boimler and Mariner in live action. Amazing but also definitely not in their 20's. These guys are more "Tapestry" Picard than Wesley Crusher, amirite?
Then again this is the same people who say Jack Crusher was meant to be 22.

Alright- finally getting around to the last episode of Picard, and I figure why not liveblog it:
It is still SOOO unclear to me why the fuck the Changelings are even bothering to help the Borg. I guess their conceptual mission (conquer everyone) is pretty similar, but.... that feels like. Not enough.
It is very nostalgic to see everyone on the Enterprise-D, though. I can't deny that. Picard's got me there.
WHY is Jack the command signal? It remains stupid. I genuinely thought the Pah Wraith theory was more interesting than this aiuwhefs;djlk';
I do love the Borg cube's exterior design, though- its so iconic, and seeing it rendered with modern graphics
Awww poor little cook- but also he had to run the deli because his brother "had a hernia"..... sir. You're in the future. Why would that stop anyone from doing anything for longer than like. a day. I think your brother was lying to you.
Okay, I'm gonna be so real- am I the only one who kinda doesn't give a shit about Jack? I get he's there to add some stakes, but I truly don't care at all. Explode him idgaf.
If the idea is to wake Jack up from his evil slumber then why would you not send Beverley....? Who, ya know, raised him?
"And I will make it a threesome" Okay i love you Worf
Okay- like I said, I am not immune to nostalgia, "it's been an honor serving with you all" OKAY, fine Daddy Picard you got me.
Also a lot of long lingering looks between Deanna and Will... Makes me think one of them might not make it out alive
You know it really is so telling how much of the original Borg design, from the ship to the interiors, they kept. Tells you how impressive it was the first time around. It is just so creepy and excellent.
Cool. Picard has magical Borg senses.
Fine fine, the Riker/Picard/Worf scene was sweet. Can you tell that I'm a willing sap for alllll the TNG nostalgia?
LMAO I'm SORRY i actually love the camp excellence of the Borg Queen emerging from the shadows to cackle evilly
Okay HELL yeah for a Seven of Nine "Big Damn Captain" speech
This is just so funny. The Borg queen is so so fucking funny. Why is she so melodramatic. Real Miette energy.
Oh this changeling connection is dumb as hell
Worf's Bat'leth with a built in phaser is COOL okay. Sometimes I am a teenage boy.
I am not immune to TNG theme music
I am also not immune to people who have trusted each other for a lifetime coming together again. Geordi trusting Data's gut.
Ahhhh the classic "all hope is lost" moment, how I love thee
I'm sorry to say it, I really am because its the emotional heart of the story, but I just don't care about Jack
LMAO conflict solved with a hug from dad- Christ the daddy issues on star trek continue to astonish and amaze
Longest "one minute to get out" ever
I'm sorry I'm sorry but once again I'm weak for the old "the strength of their connection saves the day" and I'm a sentimentalist at heart
Kinda obsessed with the idea of Riker just being the type of guy who needs a universe-ending catastrophe every once in a while or they get bored
God Michael Dorn is sooooo good at playing Worf its not even funny. He's just. Worf. I could watch him play this character perfectly for the end of time.
Love it when Starfleet just Starfleets. "Ehh you're reckless and a little insane, but in that good way that sometimes saves the galaxy. here- have a ship and hang out on the frontiers, and don't bother us."
Worf, House of Martok...... My beloved
Poor Deanna, you do deserve a beach vacation
Starfleet history must be BUCK WILD. You tell the story of that time a crew of old people stole a ship from a museum and saved the world. Like. Okay.
NEPOTISM BABY JACK CRUSHER
uaoeisdjokf THIS fucking guy. Okay, now that I know he's lame I like him more
"What could possibly go wrong?" Wow was that a heavy-handed setup. I think I heard something about a TV show and now I feel extra convinced they are either planning one or at one point were.
Everyone being SO NORMAL about Captain starting words is so fucking. okay starfleet really MUST be the nerds of the galaxy.
Okay. I'm gonna be honest I don't think I needed quite so much nostalgia bait at the end. It was nice for like. A second. Especially when it was intercut with the younger characters.
Ending on them playing poker together, la ti da- everyone got a happy ending and in Starfleet heroes are rewarded
Anyway- it was fine. I found the episode kind of underwhelming honestly, but it wasn't horrific. Just kinda. Star trek typical levels of nonsense.

Watching critics and fans alike sing praises of Strange New Worlds and Picard S3 has made it abundantly clear to me that the primary objection to new Star Trek shows is and always has been an objection to the unfamiliar.
For 6 years I've heard people shit, piss, and moan about how Discovery isn't "really Trek" and how the first two seasons of Picard "betray the character" and yet this season, and in particular the final two episodes, I've watched as Jean-Luc is molded into a parody of himself, a generic old-man action hero.
Who cares that the Borg somehow put an entire transwarp conduit inside Jupiter without anyone noticing? The queen inside of it is Alice Krige, so it's okay. Who cares that Jack willingly gave himself over to the Borg? He got the locutus faceplate, so it's okay. Who cares that his role as "transmitter" for the Borg makes zero sense and continues the Voyager era portrayal of the Borg as a top-down hierarchy that everyone hated? He's not crying so it's okay.
Like, Jesus, I can't believe that I'm nostalgic for the days of Scorpion and Unimatrix Zero, but here we are.
After all the buildup to this season being the big, grand sendoff for the TNG crew, we end with them all, alive and well, drinking and playing poker in Ten-Forward. Nothing about it feels final. Everything feels like closure by executive fiat. Revocable at any time, should the need to tap the nostalgia well present itself.
Nothing from the first two seasons gets mentioned at all. None of the amazing characters we got show up. I wanted to see Elnor meet Worf. I wanted to see Soji meet Data. But that would all take away from the easy, unfettered nostalgia. (It also would have required them to write more for Worf than just boring sex jokes.)
But more than those, what the fuck happened to Queen Jurati?
Not a single god damn event of the season makes any mention of the previous season. The Jovian Borg aren't referred to as remnants or a different faction than Jurati's, they are simply the Borg, and nobody questions it. I'm sore on this point, in particular, because I felt that Season 2 was the best Star Trek we've gotten since Deep Space Nine ended in 1999.
Season 2 presented an interesting, if slightly well-worn plot (return to the past to save the future), with a familiar, but deeply recontextualized villain (The Borg! but the queen is all alone!) and a quintessentially TNG ending (Talking the villain to death). And every part of it felt satisfying. By all accounts, I should not have enjoyed Agnes Jurati persuading the queen to be a better person, and yet...I did.
But no, we're just gonna wipe that all off the table. Here's Jack Crusher, he's 20, he has no formal education, but he's a badass space pilot and everyone loves him. He gave himself willingly to the Borg but everyone forgives him because his dad is Captain Picard.
I need everyone to apologize to Sonequa Martin-Green this fucking instant.

Just had a fuckin dream that was better than all Star Trek Picard
It had all the cast, time travel, Riker and Troy talking telepathicly, Troy calling Riker "Imzadi", Riker and Troy in danger, changelings, Tuvok, Geordi's daughters, old ships, new ships, Seven, DS9's promenade, Troy didn't sense anything but this didn't make her useless because she is smart, the amazing LWAXANA TROY, but you know what it didn't had ?
Yeah, fuckin Jack Crusher
It was awesome!!!!
I hate you Matalas, you massacred my boys!!!!

Random Thoughts on Picard 3.7 "Dominion"
*

First, I really hope we learn about Tuvok's fate by the time the season ends. They can't just leave us hanging like that!
BTW, would it kill them to have a cameo by a DS9 actor? (Worf doesn't count!) I mean, we're talking about events during the Dominion War.
And, OMG, Shaw!! I thought for sure he was dead at the end. The fact that he's still alive gives me hope because if he was supposed to die from his injuries, they would've done it now to make it a poignant moment. I really hope I'm right. He needs to survive the season!
I so do not care about Lore. He was used enough on TNG and he was a great villain. I just have no interest in him now.
So, at the same time Section 31 was developing a virus to eliminate the changelings, they were also experimenting to create perfect spies. Wow. The sad part is if Bashir had had more time to rummage in Sloan's head during "Extreme Measures" he would've found out about Project Proteus.
Still no clue about Jack Crusher and Vadic's hints worry me. Is he even human? Is this not the real Jack Crusher?
:Sigh: I was hoping for Deanna this week. Well, next week I'm guessing.
This was an amazing episode. It's going to be a LONG Week!
