Reverse horrorpreg whump time:

A creature that's utterly horrific looking and unsettling to humans, but intelligent and friendly, and a bit naive, lives out near the outskirts of a human settlement. It's the local thing that goes bump in the night to the humans there, despite its sweet personality.

After an incident involving a human having a tipsy one night stand with it in the dark, with what the human thought was a regular person (it was just happy to receive positive attention for once, so it consented despite the confusing approach by the human) ...

... it finds itself slowly swelling up with a brood of hybrid offspring, after its partner flees in terror at dawn.

This seems like great news! Humans find human babies cute! This will make it popular!

Unfortunately, this isn't the case after its progeny are born. The humans are extra afraid of it due to its erratic behavior during pregnancy, and its new offspring just don't seem cute enough to the humans when the townspeople catch glimpses of them:

The offspring that resemble it strongly in appearance are seen simply as the spawn of that terror that plagues the the town.

The spawn that clearly resemble both it and their human parent from a single glance just freak humans out, giving a strong sense of the uncanny valley and Cronenbergian creepiness.

The ones that could pass for screwed up looking humans are assumed to be innocent infants that that horrible monster spotted nearby has clearly stolen to devour, or worse, deliberately abandoned by cruel parents in an attempt to appease the local bogeyman with food.

... Maybe it should try again for cuter babies?

To say he was surprised would be an understatement. There were many things he had missed out on while stuck in his antimatter universe, and this just happened to be one of them.
