Following his collegiate career, Funchess transitioned seamlessly into the realm of coaching, joining the Southern University coaching staff in 2005. From the very beginning, his passion for the game and his deep understanding of its intricacies shone through, leaving a lasting impact on both the players and the community. In 2018, Funchess's remarkable talents and leadership earned him the position of head coach, succeeding the esteemed Sandy Pugh. With Funchess at the helm, the Lady Jaguars experienced a meteoric rise, achieving unprecedented success. In his very first season, the team boasted an impressive record of 20-13 and clinched both the regular season and tournament championships in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). As a result, Funchess was deservedly named the conference coach of the year, solidifying his position as a driving force behind the team's triumphs. Undeterred by the challenges that came his way, Funchess continued to inspire his players and shape the destiny of the Lady Jaguars. In his fifth season, he propelled the team to victory in the 2023 SWAC tournament, adding another championship to their impressive collection. These achievements, paired with Funchess's exemplary coaching skills, brought about a wave of accolades, including the prestigious Maggie Dixon Award in 2019 and two additional SWAC Coach of the Year titles in 2019 and 2023.
