Remembering Carole Cook on what would have been her 99th birthday. Carole passed away just a few days ago on January 11th. Toward the end of the 1950's, Lucy hand picked young talent to be part of her 'Workshop' where she trained and put together a company of players that she needed for various Desilu shows. An actress named Mildred Cook was recommended and so Lucy tracked her down and found her doing summer stock with the Kenley Players at the Packard Music Hall in Warren, Ohio, and in that moment, plucked Mildred from the stage. Lucy suggested she change her name to Carole and the rest is history. 'Mildred thought it was a joke when she heard herself paged over the loudspeaker: "Mildred Cook, Lucille Ball is calling from Los Angeles." ...Mildred packed her clothes in a box and flew out to California for an audition and an overnight stay in Lucy's guest house. "When a maid asked me for a key to my luggage, I said 'Just cut it with a butcher knife,'" she recalled. Just got back from a business dinner meeting with @rockinchicano and Al from @laautoshow . It was a very productive meeting with a lot of good possibilities for the movement to shine as a whole in the near future @laautoshow . Throwback Thursday! WOWZERS. Who is that exotic looking Emo Chick with the bushy eyebrows drowning in white lace? YUP, you guessed it! I desperately wanted Julia Robert's "Pretty Woman" hair, to wear the clothes and make-up of Prince, to dance like Paula Abdul, and model like Cindy Crawford. During my senior year of high school, my sisters and I had a full-blown make-shift photo-sesh in my bedroom by hanging a sheet over the closet door while, and standing in front of a bedside lamp. I gave my 35mm Minolta X-700 film camera to my little sister Donna @superhairnmakeupmaven who always did an awesome job directing my poses, and my other sister, Jenny on the sidelines saying, "Ummm....you need to stop making that face!" I can also guarauntee that we were listing to the 96 Rock on the boom box; and either The Smiths, INXS, Cranberries, George Michael or Madonna was playing in the background. It was a boot camp for my photo skills and it's interesting to note that today, my sister Donna is at the top of her field as hair & make-up artist and I am a professional photographer & filmmaker. I'm sure my other sister, Jenny, (who is an incredible teacher) is kindly telling kids in her classroom, "Ummm...stop making that face!" Ah, those were the days. I truly love what I do - and I still get those butterflies when I take photos of beautiful people and their families, whether it's for an editorial, family shoot, magazine cover or wedding. Every photo tells a story, and is a moment in time, encapsulated. We also used to make home movies on a VHS camera. We'd shoot Comedy sketches, music videos, Horror and Ninja action movies using ourselves as the actors AND crew. We would edit everything IN CAMERA. No iphones, software, social media, Apps, templates, nothing. Just ourselves and our imaginations. Those were the days, indeed.
