Healing
Dawn did as she was bid, the same as so many times before. How many times was it this week and the last that he had her draw aether from this meditation stone? Regardless, she was happy to oblige. She felt more invigorated, more lively- more whole as she did so. Whatever regimen he had working for her rehabilitation, it was working.
“... Alright…” a dry voice sounded. “Keep at it. Remember, don’t stop until you can’t draw any further, then keep going anyway. When you feel you can’t go any further, put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward.”
A cacophony of thoughts rang in her head as she desperately tried to sort through them. Every time she drew from this stone she felt flooded with emotions she was a stranger to. In addition to that, she had wondered long and hard where Hadriel had obtained this ‘meditation’ stone. There’s no way a random stone was full of aether but at the same time, it felt as if her very own life essence was being restored. She wasn’t going to complain about that. But then… if this was a product of her rehabilitation, is it because he knew about her condition?
“You’re distracted.” his gruff judgement sounded. “Focus, stop thinking about irrelevant things and draw.”
She intensified her efforts but her mind couldn’t help but wander. Her interaction with Halia the night before was proof enough that she felt a change in her veins. She was always wanting to help others yet slowly she felt that interest wane as she was overcome by more selfish and base desires. Why shouldn’t she look out for herself? Why shouldn’t she focus on what’s right for her? Who cares what others feel? Everything she had experienced since her injury only lent credence to that thought. She shook her head violently.
“I told you to pay attention. Keep drawing aether.” he chided.
The focused beam that spilt from the soul crystal stopped as she spun her head in Hadriel’s direction. “Why?” she asked. She knew the pretense he was here under- to help her. Yet he had her drawing essence to restore her own, he must’ve known there was an aetherial deficit. He must have known of her condition, yet he didn’t speak on it. This wasn’t to restore her sight, that was for certain, so he must have had an ulterior motive.
“Because Mira asked me to help you. There is nothing more to it. Now you’re wasting time, continue to dr-”
“No. There has to be more to it. No one does things for others selflessly. There’s no true altruism in this world. Only people who are waiting to take advantage of others.”
He chuckled a bit, “Ah, there it is. I was wondering when you would start being affected. Is the bitterness setting in? The anger? The doubt? Good. It only means you’re taking more and more of the aether into yourself.”
Her face flushed. She couldn’t see him but she could hear his laughter which infuriated her further. “What do you mean?! You were expecting me to get affected?!”
“What did you have left? Maybe a few months to live? Soul crystals host a fountain of aether from the people who left an imprint on it, small fragments of their souls absorbed over time. I’m letting you borrow more time from that since you were irresponsible and treated your own life and aether with wanton disregard.”
“...It won’t be enough.”
She could hear him undo the top of his flask before he drank. Of course he was drinking. She heard a scoff.
“No, definitely not. Being able to convert your own life force to aether is a gift very few people have, and now that you’ve drained every bit of that gift that you possibly could, it’s time to find a new solution. If you’re able to convert aether one way, then you should be able to do the opposite. Convert it into your own life force. Frankly, I’ve never come across anyone like you so I don’t know the right answer, but right now, this is the only answer I have. Once you’ve learned to draw aether proficiently enough from living things around you, you should be able to survive. Not only that, you should be able to thrive. Sight would be restored to you through perception of aether, and the cost for that should no longer matter.”
“G-get out.” she seethed furiously. “I’m not a toy for you to watch writhe about.”
“I think you need a break.” he grabbed the soul crystal off her desk and hung it around his neck, tucking the pendant into his vest. “You’re doing fine. Trust me. Maybe later you can try again when you calm down ...I’ll be seeing you.”
Her erratic breath seemed to calm a bit after he left. What was she angry about again? She shook her head as her grip along the desk loosened. “W-what?” she whispered to herself. She wanted to be mad at him, at something, at anything. She breathed in sharply in an attempt to gather herself. A shaky breath escaped her lips. “I’m okay… I’m okay…” she uttered to herself as she had done a hundred times before.
Her hand expanded before her as she focused her aether again, using a practiced hand to bring forth White Magicka. A flare of abyssal energies flashed in her palm instead.
 “...I’m okay.”
The door had shut and opened once more as someone walked into the clinic, “Ah, I’m looking for a Mizuna --” It certainly wasn’t Dawn’s male guest from earlier.
Dawn shut her fist and extinguished the abyssal flame that lingered in her grasp. She moved to place a rounded pair of sunglasses on to cover her unfocused gaze. “Oh? Mizuna is not here, perhaps I can be of some help?”
“I see, she’s the one that stitched me up some couple of weeks ago. The stitches are -- well I’m about to cut them out myself if someone doesn’t remove the damn things from my arm.” she watched the woman -- clinics just weren’t her thing. Nijah lifted a hand through her bangs, “She also mentioned something about a checkup but I suppose I could just schedule something while I’m here?”
The White Mage shook her head, “I’ll help you remove the stitches, as for the checkup; she can do that on her own time. Please...” she gestured toward one of the rooms and shifted over to slide the curtains aside, “...Take a seat on the table.”
The Ala Mhigan woman nodded, not that she knew Dawn couldn’t see, she hadn’t met the woman in her life. Doing as she was bid, Nijah took a seat along the table as instructed and removed her glove.
Dawn had reached for some tools and vials about the room, all while feeling for stickers along them with little raised dots. She grabbed a towel and placed it on the tray before setting it beside the patient. “Which arm was it again?”
“...Right.” Nijah furrowed a brow and held out her arm to the woman, “Didn’t count how many she actually shoved in there.”
Dawn meandered a couple feet away to the sink, washing her hands. “May I touch you?” she asked as she approached again, her head tilted.
“Well yeah, you’re kinda gonna have to.” she huffed and shoved her arm in the woman’s direction, each stitch itching for freedom and she was trying her best not to scratch.
The medical professional gave a smile, if it wasn’t clear before, it was made clear now that she couldn’t see as she felt for Nijah, finding her arm and running her hands along her skin. She felt the stitches along her forearm. “Ah, there they are, please keep your arm out.” she moved to pour one of the vials onto one of the hand-towels she had prepared. Dawn dabbed the towel along Nijah’s stitching, “Feels like it was a deep laceration… about five ilms long? About twenty stitches? I would’ve gone with more just to be safe… but it seems like you’ve healed fine. Let me clean the area right quick.” The cloth smelled strongly of alcohol.
Nijah could only stare as the woman who felt her way around was tending to her arm. She had to have been crazy to stay any longer and possibly let a blind woman come at her with the Gods know what, “You work here?” she asked. It was better than sitting in awkward silence as the Doctor went about her work, “Never seen you before.”
A sly smile wore about her features as she continued to press the cloth into Nijah’s patched laceration. “And I’ve never seen you before either. Nice to meet you.” She responded before tossing the towel into a bin, “My name is Dawn, and I was hired here to be the staff physician.” her hands ran delicately to identify where the plastic stitches were again before she grabbed a pair of suture scissors in one hand, keeping the other along the injury. “I don’t feel any inflammation and the wound seems to have closed so I will be removing the stitches. They might hurt as I cut and pull them out though.”
“Nijah.” she responded kindly enough and she knit her brow to watch as Dawn continued, “Mizuna was the one that was seen to me and thankfully I have enough know-how when it comes to cleaning wounds to make sure my limbs don’t fall off.”
Dawn gave a light, awkward giggle, “Well, you won’t have to worry about that. I’ll clean your wound again after we remove the stitches.” The woman moved quickly and methodically to feel at the stitches and adjusted the scissors along each before snipping away and pulling them out carefully. She listened and felt for Nijah’s reaction between each removal before she placed every suture onto the tray next to them. Each went without a fuss. She figured Nijah must have been good at not reacting to sharp pangs of pain.
“You’re confident in your work at least, most wouldn’t even attempt to try and do what you’re doing.”
“Oh? I suppose. I wouldn’t imagine many people would try to remove your stitches if they weren’t trained to do so. At least, I hope they wouldn’t.” Dawn spoke as she snipped and removed the last few sutures.
“I used to before I had access to a medic all the time, like this. Growing up in Ul’dah we sort of just made due with what we had.”
“Well, I would have to advise against you doing that anymore and ask that you come to me from now on.” she gave a polite smile in Nijah’s direction. It was a bit off from where she should have turned her head but in the right area nevertheless. “Though it’s already a good enough sign that you will since you came here in the first place. There.” She removed the last suture and placed it on the tray. She grabbed another hand-towel she had prepared and popped another vial. “This might hurt too.” After pouring the liquid onto the cloth she pressed firmly along the laceration and removed stitches, digging her fingers into where Nijah had been cut. “It’s an antibiotic. Since I just removed your sutures they’re practically open wounds. Best to be safe. Sorry if it hurts.”
Nijah did cringe a moment and sucked in a breath, watching the Doctor go about her business but it was all part of the process, right? At least she had got to the lengths Mizuna had not, “Thanks.” she huffed out, “I’ll be sure to remember that.”
“You know… your voice sounds very familiar.” she commented, squeezing even harder onto the wound as she moved the cloth along it, bit by bit.
“Familiar? I’ve been here for a long time.”
“Hmn.” she sounded, nails digging along the cloth to reach deeper into the wound. A few of the holes left from the stitching left a crimson stain along the towel.
“Longer than most.” she finished and her free hand took hold of Dawn’s wrist at her other arm, “I think ...it's clean now, Doc.” she hissed out ever so lightly at the sting at her flesh.
The pleasant smile wore on her features as she looked toward Nijah. The patient’s features lit up a bright blue outline along her flesh. She was seeing her through traces of aether. It came to her as if it were second nature, as if she had used this approach for years. In a blink the darkness returned and the blue hues dissipated. Dawn maintained a painful grip, “I told you it will hurt, if we don’t get the antibiotics deep into the open punctures from the stitching, it might cause an infection. Trust me, a little pain now will save a lot of stress later. Unless you’re not partial to this limb; then I can skip this.”
Of course Nijah was no medical expert but she was perceptive enough to know that the point of fixing wounds was to mend them, not reopen them. She held firm to the woman’s wrist and attempted to pry her hand away while shifting from the table, “I think it’s good, albeit bleeding again but. We’re good Doc.”
The White Mage laughed lightly after her hand was pried off of the wound. “Better safe than sorry, I say. I don’t want you to get an infection.” Her stance adjusted to face Nijah as she moved off the table. Dawn reached for the tray and felt at a couple of the vials that had not been used, “Here. These are antibiotics. You probably won’t need them but it’s better to take them and not need them, then need them and not have them.”
Nijah had taken the offered vials giving the woman an odd look, “Right.” pursing her lips, she gazed over the given vials, “Thanks… Doc.”
Dawn simply offered a polite grin and parroted the words that kept ringing in her head, “Good luck.”

FE Fates Replay - Weapons
I decided to do this separately, instead of injecting it into the story parts.  I’m trying to leave the story and characters separate from gameplay stuff, but weapons in this game were handled really badly.
First thing’s first: weapons are now unbreakable.  Except healing staves, because fuck you I guess.  Seriously, why are they the ONE THING that breaks?  Complete and utter horseshit.  Anyway, this single change has a major ripple effect throughout the entire game, and it’s not a positive one.  It’s time for me to sit back in my rocking chair and ramble on to you kids about the good old days when your shit just broke all the fucking time.
To some of you, that statement may sound facetious or insane, depending on whether you think I’m serious.  I am serious, but that’s not the point.  The point is, I’m right about this.  See, breakable weapons had all sorts of benefits.  For instance, if you had a tank, you could break the weapon of the boss that sat on a throne, and have weaker units hit them repeatedly for minor damage to farm out some levels, without having to have random encounters, or risk your life in arena.  Breakable weapons also meant that you could bring a weapon with 1 hit left, guaranteeing that an enemy would barely survive so a weaker enemy could finish the job.  They weren’t substantial effects, but they were smaller and more helpful effects.
Now, the core weapons are still here.  Brass weapon, which is really light and very not strong.  Iron weapon, a bit stronger, but kinda your “standard” weapon type.  Steel, which is heavier and stronger.  And Silver, which is the strongest of all.  To really understand what I’m getting at, we’re gonna have to talk about old mechanics.  See, back in the day, characters had a stat called “constitution.”  Constitution determined essentially how much weight you could handle on your weapon.  So, let’s say an Iron Lance was 6 weight.  A Knight, who would have really high constitution, would be able to wield it no problem.  But a Pegasus Knight, which had, say, a constitution of 4, would struggle.  To account for this, you would take the difference between the weapon’s weight and your constitution, and subtract that from the unit’s speed.  Essentially, a Pegasus Knight would have high speed, but couldn’t afford to power up to Steel weapons without a severe speed penalty.  But, a character like a Mercenary, who tends to have higher constitution, would be able to wield a Steel weapon without said penalty.  It was another component of distinguishing units.  Some could easily use Steel without a drawback, some couldn’t and needed to use weaker weapons to play to their strengths with double-strikes and higher evasion.
Silver weapons, in these days, were invaluable.  They had higher might than even Steel weapons, but weight wasn’t as bad.  They were stronger and lighter than their steel counterparts, and were considered the ultimate in standard weaponry.  Their downsides, however, were two-fold.  One, they were expensive.  If you didn’t have a lot of money, you probably didn’t have many of them.  This was a more minor drawback, but it existed just the same.  Two, durability.  Steel weapons tended to have 30 durability.  Silver had 20.  They’d break fast, especially in the hands of faster units that didn’t have the best attack stat.  You basically got 10 rounds of combat out of them, and with only five inventory slots, you needed to be carrying more weapons, which meant less support items.
Now, consider what would happen if you kept those weapons, but removed durability.  Suddenly, such a system doesn’t work.  Cost is no longer a problem, because you only need to ever buy one, and durability is removed, both negating how many you need to carry and freeing up inventory space.  Clearly, the Silver weapons are now, maybe, a bit too good?  So, how do you balance this out?  Fates decided to fiddle with stats outright.  Much like with the hidden daggers, stat changes were kind of a fixation for this game, for better or worse.  I, personally, think it needlessly complicated a lot of things, but that’s not important.  What is important is how Fates handled this.
Steel Weapons universally give a -5 Speed penalty.  That’s enough that, if you had even speed, the enemy now double-strikes you.  Now, Steel was heavy enough in previous games that this feels pretty similar, but without the convolution of having to know how Constitution works.  I can respect the attempt.  But what we lost was the distinction for sturdier units that still had a speed stat.  Mercenaries can’t really use Steel anymore.  There’s a heavy stat penalty for that, and they use speed a lot.  Silver weapons got hit as well.  Now you lose attack and skill when you attack.  It’s less severe, at only two points of loss, but they recover only one point per turn.  So you’re still taking a hit to both damage, and likelihood of hitting in the first place.  Considering that skills exist and many activate off of your skill stat, that’s even more significant.
But here’s what really gets me.  S-rank weapons, the ultimate weapons of their type, the ones you can only wield effectively if you’ve spent the entire game mastering the weapon.  They have penalties as well.  For instance, the S-rank katana halves your strength stat through your next action.  The weapon itself has 18 might, which is pretty good, but if your Strength is capped, you probably lost as much damage as the weapon’s might.  At that point, you’re better off with Brass than you are this thing.  The sheer, overwhelming deficits inflicted on the player by these stronger weapons is outrageous, and it leads into my problem with forging.
Forging an Iron weapon is the smartest action you can take.  Why?  Because you buff up your weapon damage quite a lot, maybe not to the point of the Silver and certainly not to the level of the S-rank weapons.  But there’s no draw-backs on them.  So instead of hurting your ability to hit enemies or activate skills, you just have raw damage.  Instead of halving your strength stat, you just...get the damage.  It’s an outright better weapon than the ultimate S.  And so, the best weapon in Fates isn’t the thing you’ve been building toward getting that you only obtain in the final hour as you approach the ultimate boss of your route.  It’s the simple Iron weapon, upgraded through dozens of artificial stones you collected in My Castle and paid for with a dozen copies of the same weapon and hundreds of thousands of gold you farmed.
So that’s why I hate the weapons in Fates.  That is, without question, the thing that holds the gameplay back.  Because you didn’t really...need these deficits, you know?  You could’ve done just fine without them.  But no, if we did that, why would anyone need to collect resources?  If no one needed to collect resources, why would they visit other castles?  If you won’t visit other castles, then why even offer that?  Exactly, why even offer that?  My Castle was an arbitrary idea that they generated, and tied into core gameplay mechanics in a way that does nothing but drastically slow down progress through the plot.  It’s invasive and unnecessary, and it really, really bothers me.
BONUS ROUND
I’m also gonna complain about the weapon triangle!  In the olden times, by which I mean Awakening, the triangle was simple.  Swords beat Axe, Axe beat Lance, Lance beat Sword.  Easy.  Tomes have historically had some weapon triangle of their own.  In older times, Light beat Dark, Dark beat Anima, Anima beat Light.  In the Radiant games, it was Fire, Wind, and Lightning in a similar deal.  But tomes have always been outside of the weapon triangle.  Why is that?  Well, two reasons.  One is that tomes are problem solvers.  Got a physical wall in the way?  Blast it with magic.  The other is that, despite being said problem solver, mages are frail, and having no strength against a particular weapon means that they go down to about any physical fighter that gets in range.  Archers especially are devastating for mages, because they hit the weaker defensive stat and are also ranged fighters.
Now, though?  Now, tomes are included in the weapon triangle, as just a whole thing.  All tomes are good against bows now for some reason, while they’re weak to daggers.  This means that ninja, who tend to have pretty good resistance, become hard counters to mages.  Which is honestly okay.  I don’t really dislike the idea of having things be able to beat mages.  Apparently, in the times before I got into the series, magic was horrifically overpowered.  But now, we run into some problems.
Dagger users have range, weaken enemy defenses, and have high resistance and speed.  Unless your unit is physically sturdy, strong, and skilled, ninjas win out.  So personally?  I kinda felt like they were a bit much in this game the first time I played.  Maybe I’ll think differently as I go through now, but they really felt like the most powerful unit.  But the more devastating thing is that...Lance and Dagger occupy the same category.  Meaning lances have advantage over tome.  Meaning that Generals, the super physical tanks that can only really be handled by mages, have fucking weapon advantage over mages now.  Brilliant work, Fates, expertly done.
Bows being in the weapon triangle also bothers me.  Mages have advantage there too, so Bows have less of a chance.  Ninjas took their main niche.  Oh, except for dealing with flying units.  But flying units are mostly lance and axes, so no change there, at least.  It just feels arbitrary.
Honestly, I think Heroes did this concept a lot better.  Tomes come in different kinds, and they have advantage over one another, but also are strong against a particular melee weapon.  Daggers and bows are considered outside of the weapon triangle, so the weird matchups no longer exist.  Now, if only the next game can confirm that healers can attack, we’ll be in real business...

How I Lost 30 Pounds In 90 Days And How You Can Too
Tumblr media
NEW YORK, NY --- IT ALL HAPPENED SO FAST.
I was in the midst of what I could only describe as a mental breakdown.
For the past few weeks, I'd been visualizing my "future self" quite often...
This "future self" being a healthy, happy and incredibly fit young man.
An image that, up until this day, had seemed like a sure shot.
As the wise men say, though, "all good things must come to an end". And in line with the prophecies or whatever you want to call them, my fairy tale had come to an end.
This end was the day I that my three, incredibly fast months of weight loss came to an abrupt stop.
(In reality, it had actually ended at least a few weeks prior. I'd just been too blind to realize it.)
It was the end of 30 pounds of rapid weight loss.
The end of an incredible amount of fat that disappeared, like a miracle, in less than 90 days.
A miracle that went just as fast as it came.
It went, even as I foolishly kept thinking I was "doing great" and "getting lean".
It went, until the fateful day I realized that I had made ZERO progress over the last 2-3 odd weeks.
...That the scale wasn't moving an inch.
That the fat on my stomach looked exactly as it did in the weeks prior.
And that my muscles seemed to look me back with the "ain't got time for yo' bullshit" look.
My BODY had officially had it.
And truth be told, I deserved it.
I thought I could read a 300-word blog post and follow its 6 "diet rules", learn NOTHING about nutrition, learn NOTHING about exercise, learn NOTHING about my body, and somehow transform from an obese slob to a lean, mean fat-burning machine.
Not so fast, buddy!
And so began my quest.
A quest that culminated in massive, lasting success to the tune of 76 pounds lost. And to the reality, not just a pipe dream, of transforming from an obese slob to a lean, mean, fat-burning machine.
But a quest that, for me, included the time to understand the finer points of nutrition. To understand the inner workings of both body and mind. To discover both time-tested strategies, and modern tips and tricks --- and to proverbially "hack" my way to the upper echelons of fitness. To hack my way to a level of mastery in the field, that ranks far above the "experts" spouting off their un-researched, unproven "facts"...yet below the level of claiming complete, unquestionable knowledge of the field.
Because as I've learned by studying the real experts, the claim of unquestionable knowledge is nothing more than proof of a tremendous ego and a complete lack of humility.
There is no one, I repeat no one, who knows everything there is to know about nutrition, exercise, physiology, psychology, and all the other components of building a healthy, happy, well-rounded person. (But there are some who know a whole lot, myself included. [end shameless plug])
The best we can really do is keep an open mind, and always strive to learn more, to apply more, and to test more.
To be better than we were yesterday and as good as we can be today, for ourselves, and for our clients, for our families, and for our friends, and to every single person, we come into contact with on a daily basis.
And in doing so, we can sow the seeds for an amazing, fulfilling, freeing life.
At least that's how I see life today, and how I hope you see life too (or start seeing it.)
Anyway, I know that was a bit philosophical, but it's important to get out there.
Moving on, let's get to the "meat" of what the book is all about.
I formally introduce you to one of the most comprehensive books on fat loss, fitness, and body-mind wellness that I know of (and trust me, I've read a TON of books on the topic) -- a book that combines:
Hundreds of conversations with health & wellness     specialists, NY Times bestselling authors, world-class fat loss experts,     and more.8
Insane amounts of study, research, testing, and     application, both with myself and my clients. (This includes studying and     implementing strategies from over 40 full-length books and 600+ research     papers & expert commentaries.)
My unique 8+ years of small "successes",     followed by seemingly insurmountable failures and culminating with the     final, lasting 76-pound weight loss success that I have now.
Furthermore, I introduce you to a book that you can use to, at a minimum, grasp the "big picture" of fat loss so you can start transforming your body today (while of course delving deep into the knowledge if you'd like).
And lastly, I introduce you to a book that takes away all the guesswork, and makes it simple and easy to change your body, without all the B.S. of trying out a hundred and one things just to lose a damn pound!
I hope that you use this guide wisely. Use it with as much (inner) strength, vigor, and dedication as you can muster, and in doing so, you too can have your very own extreme fat loss transformation.

How Bad Is Halloween Candy For Your Kids?
Tumblr media
Are you going to let your kids have Halloween sweet this year? Will sugar make your kids hyperactive? Or worse-is sugar toxic?
Sugar has lately come to be a hot-button subject. There have been YouTube videos about sugar that have actually gone viral, The Fifth Estate episode that broadcast previously this month, as well as some very warmed arguments between professionals. There have been some rather fiery disputes in between routine individuals, too-check the 738 remarks under this CBC article. Every person appears to have a viewpoint on sugar, as well as those point of views appear to be solid ones.
Trouble is, not also the specialists concur. And there's a lot extra study to be done. However could we all simply wait patiently up until they have actually done all the researches, and also every little thing has actually been clearly determined when and also for all?
No, we cannot.
We have to decide what to place in our children' lunchbox today. We need to make the phone call on birthday celebration treats right now.
So we do the most effective we can. As well as right now, right here's exactly what I'm thinking: sugar is not evil. We are hardwired to crave sugar, from a survival/evolutionary perspective, as well as the fact is, our bodies and minds call for sugar for energy. For that, as well as several other factors, we could refrain from doing away with sugar altogether.
But excess sugar is not a great thing. Excess sugar is most certainly linked with a great deal of health and wellness troubles: excessive weight, dental caries, heart disease, as well as diabetes mellitus, in certain. Minimizing sugar consumption is something we possibly all can, and also should, do. How you can do it? I'll obtain to that in a minute.
Does sugar make youngsters hyperactive?
When my very first boy was little bit, we resided in an apartment in Vancouver. And also my boy was (as well as still is) really, extremely active. Below us lived a lady who was in her fifties, solitary, no youngsters. We had wood floorings. You can see where I'm going below. It was a consistent resource of stress and anxiety to maintain my healthy and balanced, delighted, normally abundant child quiet, and also stop him from adding and also down the halls.
One day my downstairs neighbor asked me, pointedly, if I offered my boy a whole lot of sugar. (I didn't, as well as even when he did have something sugary, it made absolutely no distinction.) She firmly insisted on schooling me regarding the evils of sugar.
It was a really unpleasant conversation.
( Side note: the next people who relocated in were a retired pair of vacant nesters whose 2 boys were all grown up and also they made a factor of saying: DO NOT fret concerning the noise. We would certainly be more concerned if there WASNONE noise originating from your apartment! I gave them big hugs. Often.)
But that's simply my experience. What does the research tell us regarding kids and also sugar as well as hyperactivity?
Well, like lots of things, outcomes have been rather contrasting. A number of years ago a meta-analysis of hundreds of researches on the subject wrapped up there was no link between sugar as well as ADHD.
So why do so numerous moms and dads promise their children get wired on sugar? Some researchers have actually explained this with a theory that certain children are 'sugar delicate.' Which means sugar doesn't have a globally unfavorable impact on all kids-just a few of them.
Another explanation is this: sometimes, we see what we wish to see.
In one specifically exposing study, kids with 'sugar sensitivity' were separated right into two teams. One group was provided sucrose (table sugar), the various other provided synthetic sugar. Their parents were told which compound their youngsters had gotten, then asked to rank their youngsters for hyperactivity. The parents of the sugar group rated their kids' practices as being a lot worse than the sugar team. The punchline: in fact, both groups had actually received sweetener.
That stated, we certainly have a lot more to find out. I review a theory recently that the trouble isn't the immediate response to sugar-instead, it's persistent, extreme sugar consumption that may bring about attention deficit disorder and also ADHD-type behavior by creating changes in the brain's receptors. At this point that's just a theory.
Essentially, I don't believe it's an issue for the majority of children to have Halloween sweet, as soon as a year.Or birthday celebration cake from time to time. I do think if a kid has too much sugar intake all the time, all year round, it can bring about problems. That's not rocket science, right?
How to reduce your family's sugar intake? Well, you might think about cutting out sugar completely for a period of time, to damage the addiction, like a 'sugar detoxification.' Here's just how one author did just that.
Here are other methods to reduce extreme sugar:
Read ingredient labels. If sugar is provided as one of the top ingredients, the item most likely includes a big amount. Avoid.
Eat whole foods that are sweetened by nature (not a factory): fruit, wonderful corn, pleasant potatoes, milk products, for instance, are normally sweet, and also contain a lot of various other excellent stuff, besides.
Reduce sugar in foods you make at home. Attempt new dishes or change your very own. Beginning by lowering sugars slowly, as well as then include seasonings like cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, nutmeg, and ginger. Reward suggestion: spiced foods will taste sweeter if warmed.
Cut down, or eliminate soft drinks, juice, and fruity/sweetened drinks.
The bottom line? It's approximately you exactly how to manage Halloween candy in your home, but my vote is for keeping a year-round sensible technique to controlling sugar consumption ... and also at Halloween, a couple of mini delicious chocolate bars and also rocket sweets are just fine.
( But not those Halloween kisses with the ghosts as well as witches on the orange wrapper. Those are just gross, appropriate?)
Check out even more frightening keys for making this Halloween terrific-ly terrifying.

5 Ways to Break Through Weight Loss Plateaus
Have you hit a weight reduction plateau? It's time to study why, and what you could do about it.
Fat was practically falling off your body only some weeks ago, and now you're questioning in case your scale is damaged due to the fact regardless of what you do, your weight won't budge.
What gives?
Why did your recurring all of sudden prevent running, and what can you do to push through this weight loss plateau?
Understanding Weight Loss Vs. Fat Loss
"Weight loss" is a complex little devil as it doesn't differentiate between changes in fats, muscle, and water.
The goal, of direction, is to lose most fats and minimal muscle, and to maintain water retention at a healthy minimal. When you step on the size and sign in a pound lighter than the day or week before, you likely assume that you've misplaced a pound of fat; in case you weigh the same or extra, you possibly anticipate that you've lost no fat, or gained. Unfortunately, it's not that easy.
Nothing swings weight up or down as without problems as water retention, as an example. If you consume a variety of sodium and carbs, and drink little water, you'll preserve quite a chunk of water, giving you that puffy, clean appearance. This can easily upload three-5 kilos in an afternoon, which may be quite stressful if you show up to hit the scale on this kingdom. On the flip aspect, you eat little sodium and carbs and drink lots of water, your body will flush water out, providing you with a tougher, extra defined appearance, which may lead you to suppose that it become a extremely good day of fats loss.
The unpredictability of water retention is one reason why I simplest weigh myself once according to week, on the equal day, in the morning, naked. Weighing yourself more than one times in line with week, or worse, in step with day, will fast kill your confidence and mess along with your head.
I additionally advise that you pick a "weigh day" that does not contain a cheat meal, as this will regularly upload a pound or two of water as a way to come out by way of the give up of the next day (my enjoy, at the least).
What is a True Weight Loss Plateau?
A authentic weight reduction plateau is a state of affairs in which you are not dropping fat.
I recall that I've hit a plateau if my weight hasn't changed in  weeks. As I'm only going for one pound of actual fats loss in keeping with week, no exchange on the dimensions after one week of dieting isn't always necessarily a cause for subject-I ought who've lost that pound of fat but manifest to be maintaining a chunk of water, or maybe my bowel movements were not as normal within the previous day or two. No alternate in weight after two weeks of weight-reduction plan tells me that I'm in reality stuck.
Some Fat-Loss Facts to Keep in Mind
Before I cowl how to break these plateaus, I want you to understand some things about losing fats.
1. Weight Loss Plateaus Are to Be Expected
Just about everyone experiences weight reduction plateaus. If you have no concept what I'm speaking about and are able to reach single-digit frame fats probabilities with entire ease, rely yourself lucky. It's very not unusual for human beings to hit numerous plateaus on their trips to a six percent due to the fact, nicely, the human frame is just cussed on the subject of shedding fats.
I've determined that I cannot get underneath 9-10% frame fats on weight loss program on my own (you could most effective reduce your energy a lot, or you begin to consume up muscle)-I should add in aerobic if I want to keep losing. When I bulk, I generally stop off around 14-15% frame fats, and I can diet off the first 5% or so, however then I hit a plateau that simplest three-4 days in line with week of cardio can therapy (20-25 minutes per consultation). Then, the following plateau for me comes round eight%. If I want to go decrease, I must up my aerobic to four days consistent with week, for 30-forty minutes in line with consultation.
Everyone I've skilled and in any other case helped has skilled the identical phenomenon, however the thresholds vary. I've known a few rare human beings that could diet decrease than 10% with out including aerobic, however the general public can not destroy double-digit frame fats chances with out a very strict eating regimen and everyday cardio recurring.
2. The More You Lose, the Harder It Gets
The leaner you come to be, the longer it takes to lose fat healthily (the key, as you need to preserve as a whole lot muscle and strength as possible while losing fats). If you are at 25% body fat, it's very possible to lose 2-three kilos of fats in keeping with week for the first numerous weeks. If you're at 10% body fat and are creating a run for single digits, but, 2-3 kilos of fats in step with week might be not possible with out dangerous tablets.
For me, as soon as I get beneath 12% or so, I'm very satisfied to look simply one pound of fats loss in line with week, and I ought to work for it.
3. Your Body Has a "Comfort Zone"
Although it might sound a bit bro scientific, it is the quality manner I can describe a phenomenon skilled via me and hundreds of thousands of other athletes round the arena. The frame seems to have a weight (and, accordingly, a frame fats percentage) that it's miles most cozy at. Your herbal appetite has a tendency to maintain this weight and in case you eat less than this, you sense hungry. If you devour greater than this, you experience quite complete.
For a few, this "comfort quarter" is fairly fat, at the same time as others settle right into a weight that is quite lean. For me, as an instance, I discover that my body is maximum secure round eleven% body fat (which would presently positioned me at approximately 200 lbs). I don't need to watch my calories too intently and I can cheat numerous instances in step with week, and I'll simply live round 11%.
Now, retaining a weight underneath this consolation zone calls for steady work inside the form of limiting calories and doing aerobic. Getting fatter than this requires everyday overeating, and if this continues for too lengthy, the comfort region creeps higher and higher.
5 Ways to Break Your Weight Loss Plateaus
Alright, now that you recognize the distinction among weight reduction plateaus and fat loss plateaus, right here are 3 surefire approaches to stoke your frame's furnace again to hold the fat coming off.
1. Re-Calculate Your Daily Caloric Target
Your metabolism slows down as you shed pounds because your frame doesn't want to exert as a whole lot power to keep its now-slimmer physique.
If you don't alter your energy to account for this, you may hit a plateau. The easy way to avoid this is to re-calculate your day by day caloric target after each 15 pounds of weight reduction. As you may see, the goal creeps decrease and lower.
There are many formulation obtainable for figuring out how a great deal you have to devour to lose weight, but here is a simple one based totally at the Natch Candler:
1.2 grams of protein according to pound of body weight
1 gram of carbohydrate in step with pound of frame weight
1 gram of fat according to 5 pounds of frame weight
That simple macro nutrient system will put you in a mild caloric deficit and permit for steady, healthy weight reduction. To turn it into calories, genuinely multiply the protein and carbs with the aid of 4, and the fat by using nine.
2. Control the "Hidden Calories"
Most weight reduction plateaus are due to not anything greater than "calorie creep"-that is, eating more energy than you watched. This, mixed with an ever-slowing metabolism, is a guaranteed formula for stagnation.
Calories can creep in from many places. Purposeless snacking, eating out at eating places (they load calories into food with butter, oil, sauces, and so forth.), overdoing it with condiments, and consuming alcohol are all not unusual ways to feature sufficient calories to stall your weight loss without making you feel like you're completely "off your food regimen."
The sad fact is an insignificant 200-300 calories too many per day can completely halt fat loss. To put this into attitude, it really is most effective a couple handfuls of nuts, some tablespoons of fatty salad dressing, or a small bag of chips. Yup, fats loss is that finicky. It's not very complicated, but it calls for absolute precision.
So, to triumph over the "calorie creep," you surely have to realize precisely what's going into your frame every day. You can hold a meals magazine, or you could do what I do: calculate what you need each day, smash it down into each day food, and devour the equal aspect each day, each meal. I don't have the time or persistence to paintings a group of range into my weight loss program, so I include the simplicity of choosing nutritious foods that I like, and eating them time and again.
3. Increase Your Cardio
If you understand that your day by day caloric target is right and you've got virtually no calorie creep, then you definitely need to increase your cardio.
You can upload every other day if possible (I do not propose extra than four days in keeping with week if you're also weight schooling), or add time to each day (I like to add 10 minutes to every consultation and spot how my body responds).
The idea is to simply tip the scales a little bit more within the path of fat loss and look at the results. If the first round of greater aerobic would not do it, upload extra (another 10 minutes to each session, as an instance), and you'll get there.
Oh and do HIT aerobic, please.
Four. Embrace the Cheat Meal
Yup, accept as true with it or not, the cheat meal absolutely allows you lose fats.
How?
Well, first there's the mental enhance, which maintains you glad and influenced, which ultimately makes sticking for your weight loss program less complicated.
But there's also a physiological raise.
Studies on overfeeding (the clinical time period for bunging on meals) display that doing so can improve your metabolic rate by using everywhere from three-10%. While this sounds correct, it really doesn't suggest a great deal whilst you consider which you could need to consume a everywhere from some hundred to a few thousand greater calories in an afternoon to attain this effect.
More important are the consequences cheating has on a hormone referred to as lepton, which regulates starvation, your metabolic rate, urge for food, motivation, and libido, as well as serving other capabilities on your frame.
When you are in a caloric deficit and lose frame fat, your lepton tiers drop. This, in turn, reasons your metabolic fee to slow down, your urge for food to growth, your motivation to wane, and your temper to bitter.
On the opposite hand, while you provide your frame extra power (energy) than it needs, lepton levels are boosted, that may then have superb effects on fat oxidation, thyroid interest, temper, and even testosterone ranges.
So if it is an increase in lepton ranges which you actually need, how do you first-rate achieve it?
Eating carbohydrates is the only way. Second to that is eating protein (high-protein food additionally improve your metabolic price). Dietary fat aren't very effective at increasing lepton stages, and alcohol surely inhibits it.
So, if your weight is stuck and you are irritable and demotivated, a nice kick of lepton is probably all you need to get the scales moving again.
Have a nice cheat meal full of protein and carbs, and revel in the raise in your lepton degrees. It can help your weight loss!
Five. Lift Heavy Weights
If you're acquainted with any of my paintings, you realize I'm a massive fan of lifting heavy weights. Well, a few of the many benefits of lifting heavy is the fact that it facilitates speed up fats loss.
A observe published by way of Greek sports scientists observed that men that trained with heavy weights (eighty-eighty five% in their one-rep max, or "1RM") accelerated their metabolic costs over the following three days, burning loads greater calories than the guys that trained with lighter weights (45-sixty five% of their RM).
So hit the weights and hit them tough in case you need to jack up your metabolic charge and in flip, accelerate your fat loss.
And if you need to score greater points, recognition on compound lifts like squats and dead lifts, because these are the types that burn the maximum submit-exercise energy.
Summary
I desire you discovered this article beneficial and understand that the adventure to a lean, muscular body is a marathon, not a sprint.

Blog: “Reflective journaling” *cough cough* this isn’t that, it’s a rant which is being submitted as that.
Seeing that I have not had too many BCT experiences so far, I suppose I shall talk about the soundscape project.
I will come clean now: I was not proud of the soundscape I had. I did not know what I was doing, not clear on the points of the project and what the outcome should have sounded like, but this does not mean I haven’t learnt from it. I believed the soundscape was meant to be the sounds of nature, so I turned made a 4-minute version of my commute to University, finishing with what could be an actual soundscape entry: the sounds of nature with a metallic human breath (metallic to represent how trapped we are in technology). I realise what I have should have done now: used that metallic breathing and a constantly rising ticking from my clock for a base, then add morphed dark sounds. But that is then, and now is now. Learning from it, I know that I must observe other’s work now, as well as examples out of AUT.
I did experiment with multiple forms of the soundscape, one being the idea I could completely remade Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, faster, stronger” out of sounds of the city, an idea that when belly up in the water when I came to the realisation that I didn’t quite know how to do something like that or even where to begin. One may ask why I would even think of an idea and to that I answer “projects are better if the creator has pure enjoyment in doing it, even if the project is meaningless”, a belief which I carry through my work. I don’t believe what I can do will change the world, so I have fun with what I create and with a loose idea of the goal I’m trying to achieve. I can link this to an experiment held in Israel (specially: Ariel University centre of Samaria), which involved 252 office workers first answering a questionnaire what they found more productive: full on meaningful work (like most office work is) or meaningless but fun work. The results showed that there was a more positive outlook on the meaningless work since they had fun and completed it faster and more efficiently (at least that’s what I got from it).
“The Aversiveness of the Task factor correlated significantly with depression, irrational cognitions, low self-esteem, and delayed study behaviour. Results indicate that procrastination is not solely a deficit in study habits or time management, but involves a complex interaction of behavioural, cognitive, and affective components.” is a quote from a study done on a few hundred university students in 1984. Is this out of date? Yes. The only reason I bring it up is because (other than the fact I needed a second source) it’s a brilliant place to start on my next issue: procrastination. I shouldn’t have procrastinated at all during the soundscape project. I needed all the time I could get because during the final weekend my family planned a 3 day camping trip without much warning, meaning I had about 2 days to complete the project after the final instruction rather than the expected 5 (well, technically speaking it was 2 days and 8 hours, but round it down you see why I say 2 days). I completed what was left of my soundscape on the second day after about 7ish hours of work. I was stressed to high hell due to this time frame and I seriously wanted to unwind and relax… which lead to me procrastinating which lead me to shortening that time frame even more. If anything, I need to figure out work cycle: the actually important Uni-work first, anything I might be commissioned to do online, side projects & friends… actually, this cycle exists on my wall as we speak, I just never use it. Guess I need to implement it into daily life better.
If anything, I struggle with understanding. I’ve failed my first coding assignment because I failed to understand Blackboard’s horrible layout, it looks like I’m going to fail the second one as well because I simply can’t understand how to fix the initial code we were given (Which I don’t believe was meant to be broken in the first place). However, I believe I can link this all back to me wanting to have fun: I’m looking to nail the new film project we were given because frankly I love film. I hate coding with a passion even if I find the end results incredibly satisfying. I don’t actually understand fully what this blog post is meant to be. Fun fact: both sources I’ve used are throw away sources which I gathered based loosely on what I believe I meant to be doing. How am I meant find sources on something which I completed with no sources? And don’t say “use another project” because there’s been only one project I’ve done this year actually notable (that being the Soundscape of course) and there as been almost no project I’ve done which 5% of it has been ‘inspired’ (man, now I think about it, an ‘inspired’ artwork is plagiarism but with enough changes for it to be considered its own thing). I have struggled with this blog for this un-understanding reason. I can only hope that this 1000 word essay even remotely relates to the whole “Kolb reflective cycle” for the simple reason that my method of doing things (have fun because this is meaningless) is not compatible with the Kolb cycle for the fact the whole method is based around the meaningless of the project. Perhaps, if I understood what I was doing, I’d be able to relate this better, much better in fact, but the case is I do not.
… *sigh* I try to write some 1000 words and fail by 23 words. Now I need this filler paragraph. I guess you can consider me a late-realising artist who ended up becoming a designer?

Is Valteri Bottas a genuine title contender?
New Post has been published on https://othersportsnews.com/is-valteri-bottas-a-genuine-title-contender/
Is Valteri Bottas a genuine title contender?
Given that retiring from the Spanish Grand Prix with a turbo failure, Valtteri Bottas has scored far more details than any other driver at the next 4 races. From a opportunity one hundred details he has secured seventy three and in the procedure he has minimize his deficit to teammate Lewis Hamilton from 35 to fifteen. Just after Barcelona it was simple to solid the Finn as Hamilton’s rear gunner for the rest of the time, but as the poor luck has switched from 1 facet of the Mercedes garage to the other, Bottas is at the time yet again getting talked about as a title contender.
“There was never a point that he was not in the title combat,” Hamilton explained as a subject of actuality statement after Bottas’ get in Austria on Sunday. “I believe it was only you fellas [the media] who likely recommended that he was never in the battle. I always assumed he however was, and this just reveals he however is.
“When you glance at the results, he’s also experienced a DNF, so he’s normally experienced a superior time I would say so considerably.”

The 1st challenge standing concerning Bottas and this year’s globe championship is beating his teammate. Mercedes has vowed not to acquire sides at this phase in the title battle, but that equality of opportunity will develop into more and more difficult to keep if Sebastian Vettel continues to prolong his lead in the championship.
Statistically, nonetheless, Bottas and Hamilton have been nearer in the 1st fifty percent of the time than you could believe. The Finn has concluded in advance of his teammate at 4 of the nine grands prix this year and, if you were being to give again the fifteen details he misplaced when he retired from third place in Spain, Bottas would be degree with Hamilton on 151 details.
In qualifying Bottas has been an normal of .105s off Hamilton and has out-competent the Brit on a few situations. Monaco is the anomaly that a bit skews the normal from Hamilton’s facet (it would be .256s without the need of it), but the a few-time champion’s struggles that weekend created Bottas’ third-place grid placement all the far more amazing.
It also highlights a typical development this year in that Bottas has been able to step up to the plate when Hamilton has struggled. Russia was a related story, with Hamilton unable to get the vehicle balanced front to rear although Bottas was able to push all-around the challenge and get the race. In Monaco, he experienced the very same set up as Hamilton but was able to get far more from it, which finally served the team realize the challenge it faced and acquire pole placement at the next a few races. Eventually, his latest get in Austria was labelled by team chairman Niki Lauda as a end result that “saved” Mercedes on a weekend when Hamilton’s probabilities were being scuppered by a gearbox penalty.

Bottas’ performances this year have been all the far more amazing provided the late timing of his change from Williams above the winter. The challenge of moving from 1 team to an additional need to not be underestimated and the actuality Bottas has built-in so effectively is a credit not only to his capacity but the good quality of the Mercedes team. In seven limited months he has learned an dreadful ton and, crucially, he says he is however strengthening with just about every round.
“In F1 it is all about particulars,” Bottas stated after Sunday’s race. “It would acquire hours to converse about anything I have learned and created. But it is the compact matters that subject when it comes to successful or getting rid of.
“So a lot of matters, in terms of location up the vehicle, how to method the weekend with that, and driving sensible, getting alongside Lewis. With Lewis as my team mate, it would be silly not to find out some thing from him. He is 1 of the very best qualifiers ever in F1, and a a few-time globe champion, so for positive I’m watching just about every solitary time if you can find nearly anything I can pick up, any track with the driving lines, etc.
“It truly is just the quantity of suggestions I get from the team after each and every race, after each and every session, but in particular the meetings we have a handful of days after the race. We go via just about every solitary bit that they believe I can do superior, just seriously immediate suggestions. This is a team of winners, and they know how to do it. It permits me to find out so substantially, and I’m just keen to get the job done difficult and get superior, since as extensive as you want to increase, it never stops. So it truly is seriously remarkable.”
The tricky matter for Bottas now is to locate that further .105s for every lap and get started out-qualifying Hamilton on a frequent basis. Austria was a fantastic get started, but Hamilton’s gearbox penalty intended he went into the session compromised. In Q2 he set his time on the tremendous-delicate tyres so that he could get started the race on a unique compound to his rivals, but he admitted on Sunday evening that he misplaced some of the rhythm of the session by possessing to offer with the connected balance alter that comes with switching compounds halfway via qualifying.
Had Hamilton not experienced a gearbox penalty hanging above him, he would have employed the extremely-softs all over (like Bottas did) and may have recovered far more — or probably all — of the .173s that divided him and his teammate. Which is not to say Bottas did not deserve pole, far more that Hamilton is very likely to bounce again in Silverstone and Bottas desires to be prepared to up his activity at the time far more.

The next two races in advance of the summertime break will be essential for Bottas’ championship marketing campaign. Austria proved how swiftly perceptions can alter, but similarly if Bottas suffers two straight defeats to Hamilton at the next two rounds it would undo all of his difficult get the job done and make it more and more difficult for Mercedes not to gravitate towards Hamilton in the next fifty percent of the time.
Of class, Bottas won’t only have to overhaul Hamilton to develop into globe champion, he also has to minimize a 35-point gap to Sebastian Vettel. Considerably of that will rely on the relative effectiveness of the Mercedes and Ferrari above the rest of the time, but it will be vital for Bottas to get in just twenty five details of Vettel as before long as feasible in order to capitalise on any race retirements. So considerably this year the No.five Ferrari has concluded just about every round, but Vettel is already on the past of his allocation of turbochargers and MGU-Hs in advance of getting a grid penalty. It truly is hence very likely that the two Mercedes drivers will have an opportunity to shut the gap considerably at some point this year and Bottas desires to be shut enough to capitalise.
Potentially 1 space where Bottas does have an edge on the two title rivals is his mentality. We’ve noticed Vettel’s limited temper flare up 2 times in the earlier 12 months and Hamilton’s performances have always experienced the opportunity to fluctuate with his temper. But Bottas reveals minimal emotion and that could allow for him to capitalise if all the emphasis is on the more and more fierce rivalry concerning Hamilton and Vettel. In 2007, Raikkonen took the title from beneath the noses of Hamilton and his warring McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso, and if Bottas can continue being in contention heading into the remaining races he could make an upset. In the meantime, Bottas has vowed to forget about about the opportunity glory of a title and grind out the needed results.
“The actuality is that to get the title you have got to make the most out of just about every solitary race weekend and get all the details out there, be steady, and when it truly is feasible to get, you want to get,” he explained on Sunday evening. “By generating a matter about successful titles, it won’t alter nearly anything. You want to go race-by-race, or seriously session by session, lap by lap. Which is how it goes. I know as a actuality that in theory, with the details, anything however will be in the combat. So that is fantastic to know.”
According to the bookmakers, Bottas presently has a 16/1 shot at successful this year’s title although Hamilton and Vettel the two share odds of 10/eleven. Given the existing details condition and Hamilton and Vettel’s status as various globe champions, all those odds seem fair. If Bottas is to shorten them, he desires to continue on to up his activity at just about every round and prove he can put a run of wins collectively above the next handful of races. But from what we’ve noticed so considerably this time, that is not outside of the realms of chance.

Today, I faced my finances.
[CURRENT LOAN BALANCE: $23,077.15]
My quest to pay off my debt started last month when I was out of work three weeks early.
Until recently, I used to live and work in Disney World. It wasn’t a good fit. I quit my job before I was originally scheduled to leave. I knew I would be out of a paycheck for about 5 weeks before my next job began in June, but the psychological and physical benefits far outweighed the financial hit.
With mostly nothing to do all day at home but keep myself fed, clean, and entertained – even Hulu all day gets boring after a while, and the kittens slept more than they played with me – I turned to financial education. I had to offset the losses of that month without work, and with plenty of time to do it, I researched every safe, legal, and non-sketchy method I could to bring in income. I tallied up every single one of my unclaimed assets – everything from freelance checks I was still holding onto to unused gift cards. I cashed out my life insurance (not by choice.) I read up on the details of my student loan debt, which I had previously not paid much attention to, as well as the concepts of debt independence, the debt avalanche vs. debt snowball methods, whether it was better to pay off a loan early or wait, the horror stories of defaulted loans, the success stories of those who had put their noses to the grindstone and paid off their debts in a year by working 80-hour weeks, etc. I familiarized myself deeply with my Roth account. I invested in the stock market.
While I’ll explore the pros and cons of those methods individually in future posts, I thought I’d start with this one not only because it’s the most recent, but also because it had the biggest (non-literal) payoff.
Today, I faced my finances.
When I moved to Orlando, I was, for the first time, living on my own -- although I was living in AirBNBs -- in the real adult sense, rather than with the built-in safety net of a school or study abroad program. I had to pay for my own housing, schedule my own work hours, drive myself everywhere (despite my driving phobia), and buy my own groceries and gas, but on the other hand, I had no limits to how I wanted to spend my money.
Although I have always considered myself a thrifty person, the new and combined effects of seeing a decent paycheck each week and being solely responsible for my own spending meant that I wasn’t as particular about my finances as I had been before. I knew I wasn’t spending a lot of money, and certainly not on anything superfluous, and I figured that my paychecks roughly offset my expenses. Not to mention, I spent a lot of free time – 24 days in all – in the parks, and, because I was in Disney World, c’mon, of course I spent a good amount of money there, too. Disney food is pretty good, what can I say!
Coming to terms with the possibility that my spending and income might break even, or, worse, that my spending might be significantly greater than my income, was tricky. Yes, that kind of lifestyle could be problematic financially, but having the freedom to buy what I want without caring about the price is the lifestyle I’ve always wanted, and one that many people strive for. On that note: it’s too often a cliche that college students only eat ramen and toast because they don’t have the money to pay for anything else, but that is a hard limit for me. No matter my financial situation, I will cut my spending anywhere else, but I will not limit my grocery budget.
So, today, after I finished my errands, I sat down and went through each and every single one of my year-to-date earnings and expenditures and organized them into one clear document. I needed to see where my money was going and how badly I had chipped into my budget. I was thoroughly expecting that I’d be at least several hundred dollars in the red and would have to do some serious financial abstinence to make up the deficit.
But what I saw was pleasantly surprising:
All told, I had a surplus of $2223.68!
I stared at my computer like:
Tumblr media
So what did I learn from this?
Lessons Learned:
1. Although I really haven’t done a lot of leisure spending, what I do spend money on is much broader than just the basics. When I started, I was expecting to maybe divide my sheet into something like Gas, Groceries, Hulu, Paychecks, and Other Income, but it was nothing like that.
I ended up with 17 categories of spending -- so far.
Earnings: Paychecks, Positive transfers and deposits (cash and money where my parents had to pay me back), Interest.
Expenditures: Gas, Groceries, Dining Out, Food at Disney World, Hulu, Google Storage, Photography Equipment, food at work (vending machines, Subway, etc.), Pixieset, Uber, Negative transfers, Photoshop, Student Loan, Miscellaneous.
You could argue that there were more categories within “Miscellaneous,” as I have multiple charges from my local movie theatre (Beauty and the Beast? Excellent. The Lego Batman Movie? Not so much) and Robinhood (which will be its own post in the near future.)
Granted, most of the Miscellaneous expenditures were necessities: the Amtrak ticket to take me to my next job in a few weeks, an overdue oil change, a money order to pay for a missed toll booth, etc.
2. How much I spent on certain things was shocking.
Guess how much I spent on Disney World food alone, even with a cast member discount?
$401.31.
Yeah, I’m ashamed too.
Charges like that make certain other charges look paltry in comparison. $31.96 for Hulu for four months? Excellent. I’ll take two.
3. My method of organizing my accounts ended up making things more difficult to read.
Lately, I’ve gotten into the habit of putting every dollar and cent over $1000 into my savings account and leaving the remaining $1000 in my checking account. This creates a nice pleasing round number and gives me an idea of how much I’ve spent or earned. It’s easier to know if I have, say, $9261 total in my accounts by seeing $1000 and $8261, rather than $5548 and $3713.
But the downside is that it’s left me with a ton of transactions that I have to go through and individually figure out the purpose of. It makes it more difficult to read the document and makes it seem like I’ve had to spot myself through financial difficulties in the past when that’s not the case at all.
                                                           . . .
All in all, doing this was worth the two hours. I have a better understanding of my finances, and it’s reassuring to know that even in my wildest period of spending (...relatively), I was still able to keep my finances decently under control.

A brand new Concept To The Medical health insurance Crisis In The usa

A brand new Concept To The Medical health insurance Crisis In The usa
Loss of medical insurance for over forty a million Humans is one of the kingdom’s maximum urgent problems. Even as most aged Humans have insurance through Medicare and almost two-thirds of non-aged People acquire medical insurance thru organisation-subsidized plans, many workers and their families continue to be uninsured because their enterprise employer does no longer offer coverage or they can not have sufficient cash the value of insurance. Medicaid and the State Children’s health insurance Software (SCHIP) or HAWK-I right here in Iowa help fill within the gaps for low-profits children and a number of their dad and mom, however, the achieve of those packages is restricted. As a stop end result, tens of hundreds of thousands of American without Clinical medical health insurance face negative health outcomes due to behind schedule or foregone health care and growing coverage to the uninsured has emerged as a national precedence.
fitness
A number of humans which are forced to head without health insurance is not anything much less than a Disaster on this u. S . A . today. We have fallen right into a vicious cycle over the previous few many years in which medical insurance rates have ended up the too low cost for even a middle-class circle of relatives to afford. This in flip consequences in the inability of the uninsured to cowl Clinical expenses which regularly times outcomes inside the financial ruins of the family, and in flip results inside the continuing loss of profits thru the medical community, which in flip drives the cost of Clinical charges higher, in the end cycling again to the coverage enterprise organization which then need to strain the charges of medical health insurance better to help cover the growing cost of health care.
Many proposals had been tossed spherical by way of way of politicians on each side of the isle beginning from socializing health care similar to the Canadian system, to endorsing fitness financial savings debts and cracking down on frivolous regulation suits in the direction of the scientific network. A whole lot of the one’s proposals have appropriate points, but alongside something great points they create about moreover they supply vital downfalls. As an example; a socialized countrywide health care Software could take away the need for Medical insurance altogether and the cost can be taken on by means of taxes, which in Concept does no longer seem like a terrible Concept. However, the downfalls to this gadget encompass a deficit in new Clinical doctors inclined to get into the sector because of the inevitable decline in income While the call for could develop due to no on public-private obligation. In brief, if Humans did not have to fear about deductibles or copays that might normally hold the character from looking for a clinical remedy for minor matters, they would genuinely go to the health practitioner on every occasion that they had a pain or pain. So now We’ve geared up strains for people with essential fitness troubles thinking about that everybody is scheduling an appointment At the same time as on the equal time we are losing docs due to loss of incentive.
The modern-day-day conflict cry by the deprivation Bush management is to push HSA’s (health financial savings money owed) which reduce pinnacle elegance via taking a much less affordable excessive deductible medical health insurance plan with a tax-deferred monetary financial savings account that earns a small interest on the side which you make contributions to along side your quotes each month. Any cash withdrawn from the savings account for certified medical prices are taken “tax-loose”, and in comparison to a flex spending account like many humans are familiar with incorporation based plans, you do now not lose the cash you placed into the account which you do not use. Essentially in case you in no manner used any of that money inside the savings account you could withdrawal or roll it over into each different car as quickly as you turn sixty-two 1/2 penalty free to be used for retirement. That is a possible desire for some Humans, However for masses the premiums for the one’s plans are nevertheless too , and the hassle remains that if you want essential remedy inside the first few years of the coverage you’ll now not have a massive enough amount of the savings account to help cover the gaps leaving that individual answerable for a large a part of the value out of pocket.
Now we come to what I trust is one in each of the maximum important troubles from a Clinical medical insurance agent’s factor of view, that is the incapacity for humans with pre-gift health situations to obtain insurance. From the wide variety of People that contact my office looking for Health insurance coverage, I’d have to mention that approximately 1/2 of them have a fitness situation that allows you to both results in a coverage organisation declining that human beings application, or result in an amendment rider which Essentially excludes insurance for any claims related to that condition. An instance of a situation that I run throughout constantly is hypertension or immoderate blood pressure. This circumstance will from time to time result in an employer declining an application all together if distinctive factors are involved, but most generally result in an amendment exclusion rider. You may think that this is not that big of a deal, ultimately, blood stress medicine is ready the best component they might need to pay for out of pocket, but, what many People do now not apprehend is this rider will exclude Some factor that might be considered part of this condition alongside coronary heart attacks, strokes, and aneurysms that can all result in a large out of pocket declare. Consider the reality that my father had a double by way of using-skip surgical treatment in recent times that ended up with a completely final bill of round $100 and fifty,000. This complete quantity could have had to pop out of pocket had he had a high blood pressure rider on his Medical medical health insurance policy, now not to mention the introduced rate of months off of exertions thrown into the combination. On a modest income of $40,000 in step with twelve months, this will have ruined him financially.
insurance
So what how can we restore this hassle? Obviously, the proposals so far have been wrong from the start, or even if this type of plans won guide from the American human’s probabilities are it’d never be handed into law simply due to political infighting. One thing desires to maintain fitness care privatized Even as the opportunity wants to socialize it, which as we referred to earlier than every has upsides and drawbacks. It appears that evidently we’re doomed on this problem and there is no actual ideas or light at the of the tunnel right? Perhaps no longer, permit me to inform you approximately a customer I had in my office multiple years ago.
A younger girl came in seeking to compare Medical health insurance plans to look if there had been any options for her and her own family. She had numerous youngsters and had been on Name 19 Medicaid and had been going to university paid through the nation. She had currently graduated from college and had gotten a method with the close by university gadget, However, for Some factor motive, she changed into now not eligible for Scientific medical health insurance advantages. Manifestly she nevertheless couldn’t come up with the money for five or 6 hundred greenbacks consistent with a month for a plan so she went lower again to the resource office and described her state of affairs. They ended up jogging with us to find an appropriate medical insurance plan and reimbursed her for a percent of the value which I did now not even know changed into feasible!
This got me questioning, Take into account what number of more human beings might be capable of benefits insurance if they may be reimbursed by using the authorities a percentage of the top elegance in step with their earnings. As an instance; take a young married couple of their 20’s with one baby, shall we embrace that their circle of relatives profits are $25,000 and that the commonplace premium for a $500 deductible medical health insurance plan for them is $450. Virtually As an example let’s consider that the authorities determined that a three individual circle of relatives with annual profits of $25,000 is reimbursed 50% in their premium taking the actual value of the own family to $225 according to month. this is now a sufficient top class for the family to Preserve in thoughts.
With this merging of private coverage with government assistance, we get excellent of each world. Of direction, the next query is going to fee, how lots more could this price the American tax payer and how much would possibly this boom taxes? I do not assume that it would charge the tax payers a lousy lot more an right here’s why I anticipate that: First off we would carry down appreciably a number of uninsured humans which might be unable to pay for the hospital therapy they get in turn driving down the whole cost of health care. Secondly, the range of Humans which is probably compelled into the economic break and driven to Medicaid Call 19 help due to Scientific payments stemming from catastrophic Clinical conditions that do not have medical insurance coverage can be extensively decreased. This is important to hold in thoughts considering that after someone is on Medicaid they’re receiving health care Basically a hundred% included with the useful resource of the government so there is no more incentive to now not are seeking out treatment for minor or non-gift situations. at the flip side many situations that might not have been stuck earlier than they have ended up excessive because someone did not is searching for remedy because of no longer having coverage insurance should now be caught before they changed into a catastrophic declare. sooner or later, if the government allotted a fantastic sum of money to assist cowl claims thru human beings which have pre-present conditions the on public-private insurance organizations can also need to take away exclusions and declines due to already current health troubles, This is already achieved is a few states including the HIPIOWA Iowa Comprehensive Plans which ensures Iowa residents that can not acquire coverage some other place.
You will be sitting there questioning that That is all Truly wishful thinking and that this mind should in no way be finished, but all of that mind are already being performed. The problem is that just a few states perform a bit software and now not even most health insurance marketers apprehend that some low earnings families can get reimbursed for Medical health insurance charges. If the one’s programs have been all standardized and positioned into the impact on a country wide well-personalized level I accept as true with it’d located one hell of a dent in the uninsured populace on this United states of America. Now I don’t pretend to apprehend what the reimbursement degrees should be for what earnings tiers, but, I do remember the fact that Some element is better than not anything, and in my opinion, this is the middle floor we must discover. The Democrats could be glad about the socialized issue of the compensation, and the reason-publicans must be satisfied that fitness care stays privatized giving this answer a better danger at a with the aid of partisan backing.
Medical
I’ve fixed this Idea to several senators and congressmen But continually obtained the identical type of preferred reaction approximately how they are concerned with health care and that they will be strolling difficult to discover an answer understanding whole nicely that no man or woman simply even study my letters. The only way to get these thoughts out into personal is for you that take a look at this to skip it on to others via the phrase of mouth, via e-mail, or via linking your websites to this web page. If sufficient buzz is created than those thoughts might get the attention that they deserve, and if sufficient People together with you and I demanded that an answer is found than Perhaps enough stress can be positioned at the politicians to get Some factor performed. The wide variety of uninsured People is most effective going to move up, the price of fitness care is only going to transport up, and the cost of Scientific medical insurance quotes are simplest going to transport up if A few element is not completed now! Until then the most effective issue that I as a Scientific medical insurance agent can do is to take a look at all of the options obtainable and gift you with the lesser of all of the evils, which in too many instances the selection That is chosen is the largest evil of going without insurance.

A new Concept To The Medical health insurance Crisis In America
Loss of Health insurance for over forty-one million People is one of the state’s most pressing issues. Even as maximum elderly People have insurance thru Medicare and almost two-thirds of non-elderly Individuals acquire health insurance through corporation-backed plans, many workers and their households remain uninsured because their business enterprise does not provide coverage or they can not have enough money the cost of coverage. Medicaid and the Nation Kid’s Health insurance Software (SCHIP) or HAWK-I here in Iowa help fill in the gaps for low-profits children and some of their mother and father, however, the attain of these packages is confined. As an end result, tens of millions of Americans with out Medical health insurance face negative fitness effects due to behind schedule or foregone health care and increasing coverage to the uninsured has emerged as a national precedence.
The quantity of humans that are compelled to go without Health insurance is not anything less than a Crisis on this u. S . A . today. We’ve fallen into a vicious cycle over the last few many years wherein Health insurance premiums have ended up too expensive for even a center class own family to afford. This in flip consequences inside the inability of the uninsured to cover medical fees which frequently instances results inside the monetary ruins of the family, and in turn effects in the persevering with lack of profits via the scientific community, which in flip drives the cost of medical fees better, finally biking again to the coverage business enterprise which then should pressure the rates of Health insurance higher to help cowl the growing cost of fitness care.
Many proposals had been tossed round by way of politicians on both facets of the isle starting from socializing health care corresponding to the Canadian gadget, to endorsing health savings debts and cracking down on frivolous law suits towards the scientific community. A lot of those proposals have suitable points, however along with whatever excellent points they bring about additionally they deliver essential downfalls. As an instance; a socialized country wide health care Software could do away with the want for Medical insurance altogether and the cost could be taken on by taxes, which in concept does not appear like a horrific Idea. But, the downfalls to this machine include a deficit in new medical doctors willing to get into the sector due to the inevitable decline in profits Whilst the call for would grow due to no private responsibility. In brief if people didn’t have to fear approximately deductibles or copays that would commonly hold the person from looking for scientific treatment for minor things, they would genuinely visit the physician each time that they had an ache or ache. So now We have ready traces for human beings with important health issues considering that anyone is scheduling an appointment Whilst at the identical time we are losing docs due to Lack of incentive.
The modern-day battle cry by means of the republican Bush management is to push HSA’s (health savings money owed) which reduce top class via taking a less luxurious high deductible Health insurance plan with a tax-deferred financial savings account that earns a small hobby on the facet that you make a contribution to in conjunction with your rates every month. This is a possible choice for a few people, But for lots the premiums for those plans are still too highly-priced, and the trouble remains that if you want foremost remedy in the first few years of the coverage you will not have a large enough amount of the savings account to assist cowl the gaps leaving that person accountable for a massive part of the value out of pocket.
Now we come to what I agree with is one in every of the most important problems from a Medical health insurance agent’s factor of view, that is the incapability for humans with pre-present fitness conditions to obtain insurance. From the number of people that contact my office searching for Medical insurance coverage, I would have to say that about half of them have a health condition in an effort to either bring about a coverage organisation declining that humans utility, or result in an modification rider which Basically excludes coverage for any claims associated with that circumstance. An instance of a situation that I run across continuously is hypertension or excessive blood pressure. This condition will every now and then bring about an enterprise declining an application all collectively if different elements are concerned, however maximum normally bring about a modification exclusion rider. You might imagine that this is not that big of a deal, in the end, blood strain medicinal drug is set the handiest factor they would need to pay for out of pocket, however, what many people do not recognize is this rider will exclude Some thing that might be considered a part of this condition along with coronary heart assaults, strokes, and aneurisms which could all bring about a large out of pocket claim. Recall the reality that my father had a double by using-skip surgical treatment these days that ended up with a very last bill of around $a hundred and fifty,000. This entire amount would have had to come out of pocket had he had a hypertension rider on his Medical health insurance policy, no longer to mention the added price of two months off of labor thrown into the combination. On a modest income of $forty,000 according to 12 months this would have ruined him financially.
So what how do we restore this problem? Glaringly the proposals so far were incorrect from the beginning, and even if this type of plans gained guide from the American human’s chances are it might by no means be surpassed into law truly because of political infighting. One aspect wants to preserve health care privatized Whilst the alternative desires to socialize it, which as we mentioned before each have upsides and disadvantages. Plainly we are doomed in this difficulty and there is no actual ideas or light at the of the tunnel proper? Perhaps now not, permit me to tell you about a customer I had in my office multiple years ago.
A younger woman came in looking to compare Medical insurance plans to see if there were any alternatives for her and her circle of relatives. She had numerous children and had been on Name 19 Medicaid and have been going to university paid by the State. She had currently graduated from university and had gotten a process with the nearby college machine, But for some thing motive, she changed into now not eligible for Medical health insurance benefits. Glaringly she still couldn’t afford 5 or 6 hundred greenbacks consistent with a month for a plan so she went lower back to the aid office and defined her state of affairs. They ended up running with us to locate a suitable non-public Health insurance plan and reimbursed her for a percent of the cost which I did not even know was feasible!
This got me thinking, Do not forget how many extra human beings might be capable of gain insurance if they may be reimbursed by the authorities a percent of the top class in keeping with their profits. For example; take a young married couple in their 20’s with one child, shall we say that their own family earnings are $25,000 and that the common premium for a $500 deductible Health insurance plan for them is $450. Simply as an instance let’s consider that the government determined that a three man or woman own family with annual profits of $25,000 is reimbursed 50% in their premium taking the actual value of the own family to $225 according to month. That is now a low-priced sufficient premium for the family to Keep in mind.
With this merging of private coverage with authorities assistance, we get the quality of both worlds. Of direction the next query is going to cost, how plenty extra would this fee the Yankee tax payer and how much might this increase taxes? I do not suppose that it would price the tax payers an awful lot extra an right here’s why I assume that: First off we’d convey down notably the amount of uninsured humans which are unable to pay for the medical care they get in flip riding down the whole cost of health care. Secondly the range of people which might be forced into financial ruin and pushed to Medicaid Name 19 assistance due to medical bills stemming from catastrophic medical conditions that don’t have Health insurance insurance could be significantly reduced. This is vital to preserve in mind thinking about that when a person is on Medicaid they’re receiving fitness care Essentially a hundred% blanketed with the aid of the authorities so there is no greater incentive to now not are looking for treatment for minor or non-present conditions. on the turn side many conditions that might have no longer been stuck before they have become excessive because someone failed to are trying to find remedy because of not having insurance coverage could now be stuck before they changed into a catastrophic claim. subsequently, if the authorities allotted a positive amount of cash to help cowl claims via humans which have pre-present situations the personal coverage groups may want to take away exclusions and declines due to already current health problems, This is already achieved is a few states such as the HIPIOWA Iowa Comprehensive Plans which insures Iowa citizens that can’t reap insurance somewhere else. You may be sitting there questioning that This is all Simply wishful questioning and that these thoughts should in no way be carried out, however all of these thoughts are already being carried out. The problem is that just a few states perform a little application and not even maximum Health insurance marketers recognize that a few low earnings households can get reimbursed for Medical insurance charges. If those programs had been all standardized and placed into effect on a national properly publicized level I trust it’d positioned one hell of a dent in the uninsured populace on this USA. Now I don’t pretend to understand what the repayment ranges have to be for what earnings degrees, however, I do understand that Some thing is higher than not anything, and in my view, That is the first-rate center ground we should discover. The Democrats could be satisfied with the socialized thing of the compensation, and the republicans have to be glad that health care remains privatized giving this solution a better risk at a by means of-partisan backing.
I’ve faxed this Concept to numerous senators and congressmen but continually obtained the same type of general reaction about how they’re involved with fitness care and that they may be running difficult to discover an answer knowing complete nicely that no person truly even examine my letters. The only manner to get these ideas out into the general public is for you that study this to skip it on to others through the phrase of mouth, through email, or through linking your websites to this webpage. If sufficient buzz is created than these thoughts might get the consideration that they deserve, and if sufficient people such as you and I demanded that a solution is discovered than perhaps enough stress may be located on the politicians to get some thing achieved. The number of uninsured Individuals is only going to move up, the value of fitness care is handiest going to move up, and the value of Medical health insurance rates are most effective going to move up if some thing is not executed now! Until then the handiest aspect that I as a Medical health insurance agent can do is to examine all of the alternatives out there and present you with the lesser of all the evils, which in too many instances the choice this is chosen is the biggest evil of going with out insurance.

MARCH MADNESS, META-GAMING AND HOW TO DOMINATE YOUR OFFICE POOL
Ah yes, its that time of year again, the time all the sports “fans” in the U.S. tune in to watch un-paid college “athletes” compete in probably the most exhilarating tournament in U.S. sports. Here is the problem though, most people who make and play in paid for bracket leagues have literally watched little to no CBB this season. Likely most of you reading this fall into that category and are stuck listening to limp dicks on ESPN all making crazy prediction about upsets every year which usually leads to you not winning anything. Well this topic has long been written about but still every year 99% of my bracket competitors make the same mistakes (even I’m guilty of it) so lets fix the leaks in your bracket process.
  THE PERFECT BRACKET:
THIS DOES NOT EXIST. As we all know the odds of a perfect bracket are … well… astronomical and even with hundreds of millions of brackets made each year we rarely see more than 30 perfect brackets online going into the Elite Eight…So what is the first mistake we all are guilty of you ask…That would be chasing perfection. There just isn’t a strong reason to try because that’s how your bracket ends up with only 10 correct picks in the first round and your national champion knocked out by the Elite Eight. You need to pick smarter, in fact the Powergaming strategy (that is the strategy that maximizes your chances of winning) is to simply pick no upsets. Now this isn’t fun I get that but honestly what is more fun than winning especially winning money and bragging rights. Don’t be like the Joe the office guy who thinks the 15 seeds are gonna upset the 2s this year, just be smarter.
  DIFFERENTIATION:
The best way to make your bracket every year meta-game style is to simply pick very few upsets. Differentiation should be made in the first round with 8/9 and 10/7 upset picks. These shouldn’t even be considered upset especially 8/9 when the 9 seed has actually won more matchups than the 8 seed since the tourney expanded to 64 teams. Again picking few upsets is boring but statistically A LOT better than picking that 12 seed to beat that 5 seed and watching as the 5 costs into the sweat 16 and puts you at a pretty rough deficit. This year differentiation may be a little easier than usual as Wichita State draws an egregious 10 seed. Pretty much every pundit or person with a mildly functioning dog brain believes this to be the heisting of the century. WS will be an overwhelming favorite in their first matchup but then will draw Kentucky. This line will certainly be the make or break for a lot of (good) brackets, as UCLA will certainly be next in line for whoever wins this matchup. So to recap being different doesn’t mean picking 11/12/13/14/15/16 seed upsets it means picking smart seed upsets and letting other bracket players saw off their leg with their titanic Nostradamus upset picks which will lose them a ton of points if wrong but likely only get them an extra point or 2 if right.
  What makes an upset??
Simply put most mid-major teams are not built to compete in the tournament but the usual stacks stick out in most upsets. (This is for the more “adventurous” of bracket makes)
 1. Centers are not a key component of the better-ranked team:
This is a MAJOR KEY in almost every upset since 2000. Almost no Mid-Major has a serious center (because good centers are very rare) think of it like college kickers, most are just able to kick an XP and maybe a 35 yarder 80% of the time. Most mid major centers can compete vs. other mid major players but get totally destroyed on the boards and down low vs. better competition. Most teams with great centers don’t get upset because mid majors cant force them to go small (Like FGCU(15) did to Georgetown/ MTSU(15) played no center vs MSU last year…MSU played their C Deytona Davis 15 minutes before realizing he couldn’t keep up with the speed/ North Iowa(11) played their center ONE MINUTE in an OT game vs Texas last year who played their center 20 minutes…he only had 2 rebounds (pretty garbage center) and Georgia St. (14) only played their center one minute vs Baylor(3)). We want to target upsets by mid-majors who don’t rely on their center (FGCU for example) vs teams that have a mid major level center who cant keep up with pace (FSU centers are terrible Phil Coffer and Christ Koumadje are horrible centers / CK is only on the team cause he is 7’4+).  To put this in simple terms we don’t want to target a mid major with one big guy who typically plays nearly the whole game and racks up REB numbers but truly isn’t good (Eli Pepper for Lipscomb comes to mind / Also now I’m gonna get shit from their team for saying that…sorry guys beer is on me next time you’re in town)
 2. The worse team statistically outshoots the higher seeded team from three
Now a lot of people think this means they go ballistic but usually that isn’t the case. Most upsets we see both teams make about the same amount of threes but the mid-major typically takes a fair amount fewer (4-8). Predicting this can be hard but a good reference point is to find the few high seeded teams with poor center play and look at their three point shooting numbers. Some teams take very few threes these teams could be forced to shoot a lot of shots they don’t usually take from behind the arc, anytime you can put a team in a unfamiliar position you have found an edge.
 3. Keep the rebounding numbers astronomically low (most upsets end with about 60 boards)
This goes a lot with number one but going back to the three upsets above rebounding went as such
                            OffR           DefR          Total
FGCU(15)           7                29              36
Georgetown(2)   11              26              37
 MTSU(15)           10              18              28
MSU(2)               8                22              30
 UNI(11)               5                25              30
Texas(6)             11              21              32
 Outlier
Georgia St (3)     8                13              21
Baylor (14)          11              28              39              21 Turnovers
You should never expect the mid major team to win the battle (UAB vs Iowa St. is a hell of an outlier Tyler madison had 9 OREB in 14 minutes as a point guard….) but the lower the total the less likely they are to lose by a large margin. This is the least important stat but gives good insight, most upsets leave the total number of rebounds around 60 while you should expect the average game to have 70+ rebounds. If you can get a normal game pace that only has 60 rebounds it is more than likely to be a tight one, which only increases the chances of an upset.
4: Mid-Majors who rely on only one player to carry all the load usually have no shot (SDSU : Nate Wolters) (Davidson : Steph Curry) Curry undoubtedly was unconscious on Davidsons Elite 8 run but we can all agree no other mid major player can go and drop 44 on Kansas as one of only two good players on a team. Remember Davidson with the same roster didn’t even make it to the tourney the following year and lost in the NIT round two to a terrible St. Mary’s team because everyone doubled Steph and forced his team to actually help. Same happened with Wolters vs Michigan in 2013 for SDSU.
A lot of Mid-majors rely on one guy but few are as special as Curry is and that is the main point. Even garbage teams can figure out how to stop these one-man machines.
  Looking at an upset:
Lets revisit more of the FSU/FGCU matchup I talked about earlier. FSU is an excellent rebounding team and keeping them under 40 will be an extreme challenge for any mid-major. FGCU is always in the top 20% of teams in rebounding but players like John Isaac have potential to destroy them, keep him off the glass and they have all the makings to win. This game should have around 80 rebounds although FGCU is capable on the glass they should lose that battle pretty easily. FGCU certainly has some key components going for them in the center battle and FSU not being a great shooting team but their pace and ability to stop FSU on the boards is certainly questionable. The stars can certainly align but unless they keep Isaac to around 5 boards this upset likely won’t happen.
  Putting it all together:
So what does this all mean? It means a lot of stars need to align typically for a mid major to win which should go back to our first point…PICKING UPSETS IS A SUCKERS GAME. Teams are seeded how they are for obvious reasons and the selection committee watches a lot more CBB then we all do so sometimes you have to trust their judgment (except on Wichita St. that seed is just TURRIBLE). Above are great baselines to find potential upsets and find teams that’s are realistically over-rated later in the tourney (FSU has no chance as a 3 seed unless they keep facing shit rebounding teams or mid majors). For the most part though you should stick to the seeding, differentiate at the 8/9 and 10/7 and dominate your pool by doing the minimum.
Good luck and happy picking :)
There will be an in-depth upset guide tomorrow for all the first round games.
