Crying in tears at the thought Hobie yelling me I have good hair or he likes my hair

Cause I've never been told that at all ever in my life.

I have really coarse, thick 4C hair. It's hard to the touch, and very coily, and always tangled. Even getting an afro takes hours of picking it out and detangle it which is PAINFUL

And like, I just accepted that I don't have 'hair' like everyone else. I can't style it or throw it up or wear it down or anything my hair is just THERE

Even since I was in middle school I just felt like I had 'bad hair' and in high school I stopped getting perms then shaved it off a year after that. And have never grown it out after unless it was to get braids or extensions installed.

No one has every told me they like my natural hair or that it looks nice like in it's peasy everyday form. I only get compliments if I've done literal hours of painful work

But I'm getting locs REALLY soon because of Hobie and like..

Just imagining him taking me he likes my hair and that I have good hair that I can do so much with

And him giving me loc tips 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭😭😭

Since I've seen people pair up the enforcers with each other, either as a polycule or with OCs, I have happened to notice nobody has tried to pair Hak Foo up with canon characters in the show so I'll do it.

I know he's not everyone's favorite but he's mine so shut up.

Hak and Valmont - Considering the fact that Valmont placed Hak as his favorite over the other enforcers (even though that was never really explored in the show outside of the Eighth Door episode), gave him a higher - ranking job over them (probably paid him more too) and had him stuck by his side as a bodyguard in the video game makes me believe something's going on with him and Valmont.

Ya'll cannot tell me Valmont hasn't had fantasies about his men (looking at you Finn) and just because I said Hak would be unaware of the enforcers' polycule doesn't mean that he's not gay himself.

I headcanon him as a raging Bisexual, he just gives off that energy to me.

(I've said before that he's oblivious to women's advances towards him, he doesn't have interest in getting with anyone regardless of gender due to the line of work he's in and that he was sheltered from love at a young age but that doesn't mean he hasn't had ideas or fantasies about it, like I said he doesn't express any emotion outside of anger, sass, concern or super pissed so he's definitely the type who wouldn't know how to express love)

Just your typical boss x assistant/bodyguard smut.

Hak and Ratso - Given the fact that Ratso seems to be the one to butt heads with Hak the most (and interact with him for that matter), they give vibes of the rivals that hate each other, see who can piss each other off more and then tease them to death about it (Hak's usually the recipient of the teasing and he hates it).

Even though there's not much since the show liked to write in Hak Foo whenever they felt like it, I feel like this holds some water.

Also Ratso's "Big Guy" comment towards Hak Foo in the Ox Head Incident is definitely giving off fruity vibes (yes I know the others joined in on the teasing but let me have my fun ok)

(I am well aware that Ratso would probably deny Hak's feelings since Hak is genuinely a destructive person to be around and the fact that the others in the Enforcers' polycule are terrified of him they'd definitely not want to accept Hak unless he makes a change in attitude.)

Hak and Jackie - There's no escaping this pairing, the rivals that hate each other but are also madly in love is strong with this one.

Hak's little gay ass "here I am" once Jackie called his name in Armor of Gods definitely set something off in me, if someone calls your name and you reply with this much excitement you're definitely in love.

Hak always wanting to be the one to give Jackie a spanking as well also is a huge indicator.

His "I want to Ram you" line in Shrink Rap is another huge indicator to me that he's the dom in this relationship.

The fact that he also has dolls of Jackie in his gym is kinda cute also, he went through all this trouble just to make them look accurate just to destroy them lol.

(Honorable Mention) Hak and Torhu - Literally just Rivals to Lovers, similar to Hak and Ratso.

I've also got an OC in the works to pair up with Hak Foo as well, she's female so there will be more female representation in the show because they were often pushed to the side or just nonexistent.

Also we need more evil women period.

no literally. like i love the inclusiveness of body types but now we’re excluding the people who aren’t small, but aren’t big either (like me) so people like us tend to never find a spot where we fit. and it’s so funny to me with how many of us are out there because whenever i go to a store most of my size isn’t there because so many people wear the same size, yet suddenly you’re not acceptable or noticeable unless you’re plus size or unless you’re rocking the smallest of body types. where is the win for us honestly.

not to mention that we STILL get shamed because we’re either not trying hard enough to lose it or we should be proud if we gain more. i honestly don’t care about what people have to say about my body but the absolute atrocity of previously having to fit into one body type then having the choice of either fitting into one or the other instead of just being accepted for what we already look like (since it’s completely acceptable to be in the midrange) is ridiculous ~ novaaaa

right?? I feel like there are so many midsize bodies yet no representation for us, whether it is in cartoons, tv shows or in the market. Nevermind finding pants that simultaneously fit my waist AND go past my hips, or a shirt that actually fits my boobs in properly. I've noticed that a lot lately and I wish more people spoke up about it cause I feel like I don't fit in either side and I'd just like to look at someone and be like "hey that's a body like mine" cause sometimes I'm comparing myself to the bodies on screen like 'which one is closest to mine' and its extremely toxic

honestly you're one of the rare ones who didn't lie about reading the dmbj og books bc after seeing some ppls tweets there are way too much of 'its bc i've read the book i hate it' and then they proceed to describe the thing they hated that was in the book and i just start laughing. anyways same about the 'restart'. like hell i'd exchange what zu yilong and huang junjie did for what was happening in there and it all ending with wu xie rapidly aging and going bald no thank you

I just think that this is the kind of a rare fandom, where whether you are a fan of the books or not, it doesn't matter unless you're making sense and consistent with what you're saying, bc the novels are a hot mess tbh. Like even if you're a huge fan of the books for some reason, there had to be places where u were like "well that was... strange" lol

So like it weirds me out when ppl keep agressively yelling ooc and he'd never do that, if that's what he did in the novel. you mean like "ooc compared to what this character is in your head?" but thats not ooc lmao

For me it's just the overall feeling I guess, like if I'm watching and it feels right or it feels.. well, not. Chemistry plays a huge role too.

Like the only Qilings I love are Yuliang & Junjie, but whoever came up with the "Yuliang is the closest to the book Qiling version" is hella wrong and lying, you can check it yourself. But I can't consider the fact that they're so much softer and more gone on Wu Xie as a flaw, although some aparently do xD

Same as I personally can't accept the Wu Xie's "don't worry about him" line in the new one, but know for sure that there was tons of moments in the books like and I quote here Wu Xie literally going "knowing how skilled Xiao Ge was I wasn't worried about him at all, so I just watched him as he ran, distracting the creature". Like I'd rather have SOP version of Wu Xie being hella scared even when XiaoGe just jumps down stuff and running to check on him first out of everyone else after bomb explodes. But thats not whats happening in the novels, so it's technically ooc haha

Those who read also know that like "I'll notice if you disappear" 'I'm a man with no past and no future' scene in UN that was done so touchingly and romantically.. well, to say that it didn't carry as much emotion in the book is to say nothing lol. It just wasn't the vibe UN went with.

And why would I even want the Reboot book reunion going "why are u here?" of nothingness, if I can have what these idiots did with their heart eyes and "you're here, I'm okay now" and everything?

I mean, if you want the book version, fine by me, but like blaming people who wanted by novel #...12orsmth for them to pass some stages and get the warmth we got in UN and SOP is insane.

I mean, just the fact that in the Restart book Wu Xie had an internal thought that next time they see each other they might not even know how to behave with each other and that for him he's just a random person he passes by in his long life just almost made me close the damn thing lolz

I honestly considered myself an extra Xiao Ge fan, until I saw some ppl's reviews and opinions and thought "omg lmao some just go straight overboard with everything", esp considering canon.

I was straight up laughing at that one comment "all he does in this part is looking lovingly at Wu Xie and protects him". I was like damn, so many of my faves are cancelled like that... I mean, you're watching HOB anime and like "my god it's such a bad representation of the Hua Cheng character, all he does is stares at Xie Lian and protects him" lol (I'm sorry but this 11 episodes are NOT the part of the book that tells his story and who he is, but this in fact doesn't mean that they "reduced him to a tool" lmao). Meanwhile some DMBJ books Wu Xie goes "I knew he was hired by the 2nd uncle just to keep us safe". LMAO SO WHAT? this is not making him a tool, that's just what he does, it doesn't make his FULL CHARACTER, just bc he does that.

Like seriously, it sounds as insane as someone splitting MDZS in 3 parts, watching the last one, then the first one and saying like "you know in the last part all that LZ does is stares lovingly at WWX and protects him, he was much more complex and flawed in part 1". Like wth lol... ITS THE SAME FUCKING CHARACTER.

Also I saw one UN review that was positive, but just went that Xiao Ge in that part felt more like humane or smth, bc "at some point he even grew a scruff". I was just sitting there like... out of all the things in this series that made him humane, why mention the scruff? Like since when it's a thing...? I mean just bc Shen Wei or Lan Zhan look perfect all the time that somehow means they don't have feelings or less human beings? I do not get.

So all these tantrums of "ISTG IF THEY EVER SHOW QILING JUST PROTECTING THEM... I'M GONNA BLEW UP" and the same one saying that they're the book fans, I'm like "how didn't u blow up during several books already?" lolz

I like love reading so many different opinions, when it comes to this fandom, bc it's so fascinating, but some arguments just don't go together well haha

And I'm a huge fan of UN, but like.. some go a bit TOO extra about it and their arguments just don't stick sometimes, bc they're trying again with the "it's the less-est ooc from books", but it wasn't as much it, as the fact that it just had soul in it, which sometimes in my opinion actually completely lacked in the og novels.

Anyways, as an extra Qiling's fan myself, I can tell that some are going waaay overboard with stuff.

How do we recognize ableist content like that? I've never been in situations like that, so something that look pretty harmless to me could be in fact quite shitty. I don't want to share stuff like that and be unaware of it, how do I learn?

well thank you for asking!!! but the first thing I’d like to do is make it clear that while I do trust myself to recognize many common ableist errors/choices, I do not pretend to be an authority on this issue any more than anyone else who’s done some research, talked with other people, and worked to recognize things. I need help sometimes too! Also I’d like to reiterate that I am able-bodied and people with disabilities are free to correct me.

The second thing to notice is that SOMETIMES these things are context-dependent. For instance, while I usually gag to see Jameson made into like the son of somebody the same age as him, if you’re actually writing an au where Jameson and maybe another character or two are actually children to another character, that can be pretty cute!!! In that case an adult is not being infantilized and he is not made into a child because of his disability - he’s being made into a child because he’s a literal four-year-old and that’s the premise of the story (and he still can’t talk). Alternatively, maybe Jameson needs extra attention and love and protection from older brothers after a traumatic event - but at some point, that Jameson should begin to regain his independence, should still experience a wide range of emotions, and should not be condescended to about his emotions or ability to function alone. However, please be careful with this… don’t use context to make excuses if you’re actually pulling ableist shit.

I think that list I gave in the post I made is a good (but not comprehensive!) starting point for some of the things to look for that are offensive to people with disabilities (some of these are specific to mutism). Let’s take another deeper look at these points:

Before reblogging something with Jameson in it, for instance, ask yourself - does this infantilize the character?

Is Jameson unable to function alone in society beyond the reasonable limitations we would expect of a person with a disability? Is Jameson babied to a ridiculous degree by the other egos? Does Jameson only experience basic emotions? Does Jameson ever stand up for himself or display “unpleasant” and unromanticized emotions such as anger, desire to isolate, desire for violence, ugly grief and sorrow, etc? Disabled adults are still ADULTS. Don’t treat them like little kids!!! If you want to portray Jameson’s trauma reactions - and you should!! he’s been through a lot!! - make sure this is more complex than just reducing him to a sweet needy baby who needs a hand to hold twenty-four seven. He should have ugly reactions too and be more complex than sad sometimes because he’s disabled and needs more attention. Otherwise you are infantilizing his mutism and romanticizing his trauma.

Does this erase Jameson’s disability completely or partially?

I have had people tell me it’s okay to erase Jameson’s disability because “they just wanted him to have a cute British accent.” I have had people to tell me to “chill out” because it “isn’t a big deal” that people erase his disability. I’ve heard people say “I couldn’t really get into Jameson for some reason, he just wasn’t my favorite character - so I decided to make him my own and give him new powers and let him talk and now I like him a lot!”

DON’T WRITE HIM IF YOU AREN’T WILLING TO INCORPORATE HIS DISABILITY AND YOU HATE DISABLED CHARACTERS. WHY ARE SOME OF U LIKE THIS. HOW DARE YOU qUITE FRANKLY

DO NOT SUPPORT CONTENT WITH A SPEAKING JAMESON UNLESS ANTI IS ABOUT TO SHOW UP AND CUT THAT BOY’S THROAT OR MAYBE IT’S AN AU WHERE SOMEBODY ELSE HAS THE DISABILITY BUT I’M NOT A HUNDRED PERCENT SURE ABOUT THAT ONE -

When you erase Jameson’s disability, you are telling every disabled person who might come across your writing that there is something wrong with being disabled and that they need to be fixed, as well as warping your own perception of the disabled people you will meet in your life. Do not use magic spells to erase Jameson’s inability to vocalize. Do not just decide you prefer a vocalizing Jamie.

Is this a respectful and accurate representation of a character who cannot vocalize?

If you are not disabled, you probably should not write pieces deeply exploring his relationship with his disability, because you just can’t do it right. I’m tired of seeing people write like ten thousand words of whump about how sad Jamie is about being disabled and how he longs desperately to just be normal like everyone else!! If only he didn’t have to sign!!! And he never seems to make any progress at accepting himself, he never seems to have any righteous anger at the people who treat him like shit, he always seems to let himself be comforted by other people telling him how to perceive himself instead of coming to terms with it with the help of both others and his own internal development. Incorporate his disability, and yes, it’s okay if it upsets him that other people react poorly to his inability to vocalize sometimes, but avoid stories which focus on him dealing with his disability exclusively if you are not disabled. If his disability is the only thing that ever makes him sad or makes him experience a negative emotion, you have fucked up again and you are using his disability for whump points like an asshole instead of seeing him holistically. I get upset sometimes because I see people will get prompts about JJ and it will be like… “job interview!” so they write one where Jameson gets turned down for a job because of a disability or it will be like “mourn!” and it’s about how he mourns his lost voice and “spell!” is about Marvin trying to fix him and just….. I guess it’s okay to write that stuff every now and then, but it’s a BIG RED FLAG if someone takes every single prompt or thought about JJ and makes it about him being sad about his disability.

Is this a respectful and accurate representation of sign language?

Please be aware that Jameson speaks BSL, not ASL! I think most people mess that one up just because they don’t know, not because they’re ableist, so it’s great to spread awareness! If you are writing something about Jamie, though, you really should know. You should also try to learn a little about the way people sign and just do some research! Also, when writing Jameson, be aware of the signing. If he is in another room than Jackie, then remember that Jackie can’t “hear” him. You just forgot he couldn’t talk! Double-check your work or ask someone to beta and this one is avoided easily. Be open to someone pointing out “actually, Jameson couldn’t do that, he was downstairs!” and work to accommodate him.

If I were unable to vocalize, would I be offended by this representation?

Many of us have disabilities of our own. Think about the things that bother you and how they apply to mutism or even other disabilities like Chase’s depression. One thing that always helps me (though I am not in a wheelchair!) is comparing this to people in wheelchairs. Would it be okay for me to write a fic where a person had their legs magically fixed after a lifetime of not being able to walk and then everybody liked them better and they finally found purpose? Would it be okay for me to write ten snippets in a row about how sad they are they can’t walk? Would it be okay for me to just decide they can walk now because I’m annoyed when I have to write in their wheelchair? Is it okay for me to say that they can’t wheel themselves around or that they use magic to move at all times and would not be able to move at all if someone were not pushing them or they lost their magic? Is it okay for everyone to treat the person like a helpless baby because they can’t walk? Honestly, I think we know more than we think if we take a moment to critically examine. Trust your gut.

Does this contain common problems in portrayal of characters with disabilities/mutism such as derision or lamentation towards sign language, making the character defined entirely by their disability (always a cheerful character except when reminded of their disability, for example), having other characters explain things about their disability to them, or treating the character as childish, needy, and unable to function in society because of their disability?

Pretty self-explanatory, but well worth repeating.

Do not show derision towards sign language (though a villain might, if it was clear that they are the villain and doing something wrong!). We have already discussed the complexities of lamentation and I suggest that you avoid that as well, especially if you are going to make his character flat. If you are not disabled, you really can’t portray it well, and it’s ableist to focus so much on the disability that you do not give the character any other complexity. Do not make the disability the “tragic backstory” of the character’s life. Complexity is important because it means you are seeing the person as more than their disability! You should know things about the character other than “they are happy and sweet and sugary and never get angry or make mistakes!! except sometimes… they are sad because they can’t talk uwuw poor baby” you look that shit in the eyes and you tell it to fuck off, you hear me? It’s great to have a sweet, nice, sugary baby brother Jameson as long as he is more complex than that, with real independence and abilities of his own and complex emotions and character! His disability should not be his one weak spot or his tragic backstory or some shit!

ALSO DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT REFER TO JAMESON AS “THE MUTE.”

Don’t have a speaking character explain things about disabilities to characters with disabilities. Speaking characters should not be condescending towards the character about much of anything, really, or else you’re infantilizing - if you need someone to explain things, obviously that’s okay, but do it in a way that recognizes that this is a mature and independent adult.

The character with a disability should be able to function in society past the limitations that are to be expected. No, Jameson isn’t going to magically start talking, but if he wants to go on a walk alone, he can. Let him do things like writing or texting. Don’t be afraid to give him a cool job and awesome hobbies. Let him have independence. If you can’t imagine JJ living on his own because he can’t speak, you’re doing it wrong. Look for signs that Jameson is capable of things other than making tea and kissing his brothers good night.

It’s okay to have a Jameson with a slightly childish personality, and I love it when he’s a sweet boy! But there should be more to him than that. I’m just going to say it - you know when Jameson is being treated like a baby. You know the difference between infantilization and a nice friendly man with sweet cute hobbies and interests. You can see it. Trust yourself. Don’t buy it when you see it and if you’re writing him, make sure there is complexity instead of just sugar-sweet with a sugar-sweet filling. He’s an adult. Remember that and remember that it’s harmful to pretend otherwise.

Geez, that was a rant and a half. Again, I am not the perfect authority. But there are some tips.

hi; question. i've really been enjoying your ship related meta even though we don't ship a lot of the same pairings, and i'm kind of interested in trying to watch jane the virgin because I loved ugly betty and it's supposed to be ugly betty's spiritual successor and all that. the thing is, i've noticed that a lot of people who watched the show and who are also swanfire shippers like me see the whole michael vs. rafael have a repeat of neal vs. h00k. as someone who still (1/2)

cont. harbors a lot of resentment over c$, (they're literally my notp of all time lol), do you think it's worth me trying to get into the show or will it just make me angry?

Hey, lovely! I’m glad that you’ve been enjoying reading my meta. The fact that you’ve been reading it even though we don’t ship a lot of the same pairings is even more of a compliment. So, thank you!

Jane the Virgin does have very similiar vibes to Ugly Betty. I loved Jane the Virgin so much, it was one of my favourite shows, because aside from Ugly Betty I’ve never found another show that has that style. It’s quirky, fun, inspiring, dynamic and uplifting. It has great diversity since it follows a Latino family, it’s led by strong female characters, it explores identity, modern family structures, sexuality (there’s LGBT+ representation and an exploration of bisexuality, which is particularly rare in television), immigration and so much more. The characters are great and the show is genuinely funny.

Sadly, the Michael/Villadero vs. Rafael/Jafael situation soured all of that for me. I never thought I’d stop watching a show that I loved so much, but I became so bitter and angry that I had to. And it was all because of what happened with Michael and Rafael. If you’re interested and don’t mind reading spoilers, you can read my thoughts on this in my JTV meta tag.

I wouldn’t necessarily say that the story plays out the same way as the Swanfire/Captain Swan story did on OUAT. There are some similarities, but ship wars are always similiar regardless of which ships are involved or what show it’s on. You have the first ship, who the female character is usually in a relationship with at the start of the series. That relationship is usually with the “good guy” and is very grounded, romantic, respectful, endearing and built on understanding, compassion and connection. Then there’s the second ship with the “bad guy” who crashes into the female character’s life and is more dangerous and exciting. He’ll incessantly flirt with and charm her, but she’ll refuse his advances before eventually sucuuming to his vulnerable side and falling for him becaue he’s a bad guy that is really just a big teddy bear underneath it all. One ship of these ships will discredited (usually the first, because they were first loves and no longer relevant) and the other is championed. Sound familiar? It should, because this is the way most (if not all) triangles play out. The problem is, that if the first ship is the one you’re invested in, it can be hard to accept and can completely detract everything you once loved about that show.

I always think that shows are about so much more than just ships. I’ve watched lots of shows and there are only three out of all of those where ships (and ship wars) have ruined my enjoyment of them and that’s Jane the Virgin, The Vampire Diaries and Once Upon a Time. And the reason for that is because a) I was highly invested in my ships on those shows and they were destroyed b) I felt that the female characters (Jane, Elena and Emma) were all sacrificed for their endgame ships c) I genuinely think that these ships, the way they played out and how they were written didn’t make sense and was disjointed from the overall narrative of the show and the development of the characters d) the overall story-telling and vibe of the show completely changed for me once the endgame ships took centre stage and I no longer enjoyed watching them e) I really disliked the messages and tropes attached to the endgame ships and what they represented.

Having said that, you may watch JTV and really like Rafael and ship him and Jane (I’d be surprised if this happened lol, but you never know). Or you may like Rafael and Michael equally and not ship either of the main pairings. Therefore, you’d be able to enjoy Jane with both Rafael and Michael and not have your viewing experience dictated by your shipping preferences. There’s no way of knowing unless you watch it. So even though I’ve gone a very long-ass way about saying this (sorry lol), my advice would be to give JTV a go. There’s a lot to love about it and I really enjoyed seasons 1-3 (well, part way through 3). Even though I stopped watching the show I carry characters like Jane, Petra, Michael and Rogelio with me and I’ll always love the dynamics between those characters. Some of the arcs and themes that are explored on the show spoke to my heart and I’ll always remember them. Even with Villadero, despite how heartbroken I was (and still am) about how they ended, they’ll always be one of my greatest OTPs. They’re incredible and well worth watching the show for. Jane and Petra have one of the best relationships on the show and you can enjoy watching that from the first until the last episode.

It all depends on how much of a shipper you are, how attached to characters/ships you get and how much you’re able to look beyond shipping/character preferences to enjoy a show overall. If you go into it knowing what’s going to happen, you might be able to accept it more easily, even if you do become as invested in Jane and Michael as I did. However, if you do decide to watch the show and feel yourself becoming over-invested in Michael and Villadero, I would recommend cutting your losses and to stop watching at 3x09.

Hey could you please do a type contrast between ENFP and ISFP because I'm trying to figure out which I am. I think I might be ISFP because I'm pretty sure I have inferior Te because I'm quite impulsive and I don't usually think things through and I used to like to have things in control and to behave according to rules. I've always typed myself as ENFP before though or very initially I also thought I was INXP. I looked on ur type contrast page and couldn't see this one so I thought I'd ask!

Someone out there is laughing at me. My phone literally hit me with this ask 35 seconds after The Scarlet Pimpernel ended and I watched it with an ISFP.

Why does that matter, you might ask? Well, Percy is an ENFP and Margueriteis an ISFP. Go watch it. It’s worth it, I promise. It stars Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour. The plot is about a British aristocrat (ENFP) who goes under the alias of “The Scarlet Pimpernel” to rescue people from the French Revolution and winds up falling in love with a French actress (ISFP), who is then manipulated by her ex-boyfriend (INFJ) into trying to find out the identity of the Pimpernel.

As a Ne-dom, Percy has a few excellent things going for him, and a few pitfalls.

One, he’s absolutely hilarious and can snark at the drop of the hat. He enjoys manifesting his feelings through barbs, insults, innuendos, and suchlike, often to express his contempt for the current state of French politics (”You should send your tailors to the guillotine!“ he quips, dissing French fashion; Chauvelin says, “We shall send our king instead, and exalt our tailors,” and Percy retorts with, “Alas, then tailors will rule the land and no one will make the clothes. So much for French fashion!”)

Two, he keeps the larger picture in focus at all times and manages to stay one step ahead of his adversary – this is Ne/Te, allowing him to innovate on the fly just enough to keep ahead of Chauvelin; he engages “plans” and easily sets them into motion, he delegates tasks to subordinates, and he argues rational reasons why they must remain a small group and incognito.

Three, he can revise his plans and abandon all former ones at the drop of a hat, which in the end saves his neck because he had a few minutes to scheme.

Four, he is largely concerned with philosophical abstractions – even though he is using them for mockery much of the time, the real focus of his jabs is the sensory world (he’s pretending to be “the most idiotic fop” in England, for the greater good, because he self-identifies with the French aristocracy - Fi) – fussing about clothing, mocking French fashion, and over-exaggerating his feminine traits to throw people off (emphasis on low Si).

Being so laid back and trusting his ability to get himself out of messes has its disadvantages – Percy almost gets himself killed because he permits one of his League to disobey his orders – his strong sense of Fi (“I am not your boss, and you must do what you believe is right”) is almost his undoing, and his lower Te prevents him from stepping in to lay down the rules, which would have been for everyone’s greater good. His Ne is naive and idealistic – he underestimates how dangerous Chauvelin is due to personal dislike (Fi), and underestimates how dangerous individual situations can be. His Ne’s “we’ll wait and see what happens, and I can revise it later if need be” isn’t always in his favor.

His low Si is also a pain when it comes to believing a piece of information about the woman he loves. Percy has such a poor connection to his own sensory impressions that he cannot contrast and compare what he’s told about her actions with the woman he knows (stronger Si required) and thus believes the ideas he hears (Ne) and retreats into himself, emotionally – he tries to hide “his contempt” but cannot really manage it (Fi).

Since there are two introverted feelers at the heart of this story, there’s a huge presence of misunderstandings, lack of communication, the inability to be frank with one’s feelings as things happen, and the inevitable frustration that comes from each person pulling away from the other to process their feelings, when it might resolve everything if they just… talked.

If Percy is the idealist, Margueriteis the realist who sees more than Percy because she pays attention with Se and interprets with Ni. Early on, strangely drawn to him despite his foppish behavior, she asks him, “Are you an actor too, playing in some strange charade?” She knows he’s lying to her, and to society, but cannot put her finger on why; she senses the shift in him when he believes something about her that isn’t true and says he “wears THE MASK (his fake self) in private now, as well as public.” This is her Fi/Ni loop, sensing Percy is not being authentic to his true self in others’ presence and intuiting his reason why – he must be hiding something because he doesn’t trust me.

Her intuition isn’t quite strong enough to figure out that he’s the Pimpernel, until she sees a visual representation of the Pimpernel symbol and associates it with her husband (Se). She is willing to accept him as he is, though it frustrates her (Fi-dom, disinterested in changing another person; Percy expresses his open disapproval in a much more brutal tert-Te manner, intended to punish her for her perceived wrongdoing and in so doing, change her). She reacts to his coldness by pulling away. Marguerite is offended that he will say nothing in her defense when the accusations become public – society’s opinion matters to her less than that he doesn’t believe her, nor intend to forgive her; and instead of telling him it’s all a lie, she stops confiding in him altogether. Since she isn’t an extrovert, she’s far less confrontational and cutting than he is, when she’s upset (she never confronts him with aggression or demands answers for his strange behavior, but rather tries to appeal to his better Fi-nature).

She isn’t as good at innovating on the run as he is, because he’s an extrovert and has stronger Te, but her impression of who she is, who he is, and who Chauvelin is, is much more grounded and realistic than his (”You shouldn’t tease Chauvelin; he’s very important in the government” = he’s dangerous, Percy, and whatever game you are playing, you need to stay out of his way).

She aligned with the Revolution until it became something she disagreed with, and could no longer morally support, then her Fi slammed on the brakes and she ceased any involvement. She refuses to pretend to be anything she is not. Percy is more willing to compromise who he is, behind a facade; he puts aside his pride and loops out of his emotions as much as he can, in order to deal with what is in front of him (even as his marriage falls apart, Percy focuses on “getting the Dauphin out of France”).

So, in short:

Percy’s Ne is naive and idealistic and he relies on it a lot, reasoning he’ll deal with that problem when he gets there; he falls back on strong Te to get things done, but all the mistakes he makes are sensory-based (underestimating people and situations, making failed escape attempts, etc). His lack of a strong connection to a stable Fi (it’s under Ne’s influence) means he can dismiss his love for Margot, and show her nothing but contempt, disapproval, or a false side of his nature (Te and Ne).

Margueriteprefers to take things at face value (Se) unless something tugs at her subconscious awareness and informs her that this person is dishonest, hiding part of themselves, pulling away from her, or malicious in nature (Fi/Ni). SHE is the one who tells Percy that their romance is moving too fast (he responds, “My heart dictates the pace” – aw, such a romantic sap he is), and because personal integrity is so important to her, it pains her a great deal that he is being inauthentic to himself and to others (Fi) until she understands why.
