When did you start writing Olitz? 2018, after the show ended.

Tell us about yourself! What do you want readers to know about you? I'm from the Philippines, the capital which is Manila specifically. I feel like there's not that many scandal and olitz shippers from where I'm from and I haven't interacted with a local scandal fan haha. Greys and HTGWM are very much more popular here so I guess there's that. I'm basically your regular Millenial girl - balancing work, bills, finances, shopping, the pros and cons of single life hahaha. That's it. I live a boring life!

What drew you to Olivia and Fitz? Firstly, a lot is really credited to Kerry and Tony's chemistry. They seriously have the most potent chemistry that I have ever seen when it comes to tv couples and it's very hard to forget combined with their great acting. I feel like they were really born to play Olivia and Fitz. Next would be the very raw, deeply flawed, and realistic portrayal of their epic love story but dysfunctional relationship. Olitz is a very controversial couple. I would even argue that it is Shonda's most controversial couple in Shondaland. When you go outside of the fandom, they are deeply hated to this day and people have a lot of energy (and apparently are willing to spend their time) to criticize them. But all that hatred and negativity towards them shows how very spot on their story was. There's a lot that could have been improved on but the issues that stemmed out of their relationship and their flaws I think resonated with many people which is why a lot hated them. For a ship to get so much hate even years after show ended, it goes to show that a lot really payed attention to them and were moved by their story. ps. you don't get that much attention with olake haha. that pairing appears to be only relevant when it involves fitz/olitz.

What made you want to write about them? I was really hoping that someone would write a long-form post-canon fic about them. I really thought their ending would spark a slew of fanfic! So with its absence and after back-and-forth consultation with my writer friend, Nina, I decided to just go on and write (my very first attempt ever!) what I would want to read. Canon olitz doesn't have a good rep understandably but there's really a lot of room to unpack in it and at the same time get a deeper insight on why Liv and Fitz acted that way during the show. There's still a lot of story to tell because as cheesy as this sounds Liv and Fitz storyline as seen in scandal will never be over.

How would you describe your writing? Angsty, problematic, realistic, raw, hopeful even when it feels not (I hope I do convey these!)

What inspires you to write / create? Olivia and Fitz characterization and their relationship in the show.

Favorite movies, shows, music?

Films - In the mood for love, Fight Club, Parasite, Clueless, Bridget Jones Diary lol. Any films really by Wong Kar Wai, Davin Fincher, and Nancy Meyer

Shows - Sex and the City, The OC, Succession, Skins UK 1st and 2nd Gen

Music - Too many but mainly The Strokes, Daft Punk, The XX, Phoenix, Britney, Kylie Minoque, etc.

How long does it take you to write a chapter? It really varies! The shortest was like 2 weeks-ish and the longest was like 8 or 9 months. Aside from how my life is going, it really highly depends on my mood towards the subject-Olivia and Fitz. Admittedly I'm an on-and-off shipper, sometimes I enjoy them or get in my feels and then there are times that I highly dislike and regret shipping them to the point that I wish they never got back together or argue that Fitz should have been written off the show. Writing for me is very mood based.

A favorite line, scene, or paragraph you’ve written.

"Fitz back then always thought that once he has fulfilled his father’s predetermined life for him at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave that he’ll be back home to this cozy beach town. That was of course before that one fateful day on February in New Hampshire when a tornado stormed into his life that was ornamented by the California sun." (Chapter 3)

To me, it sounds nice when you read it haha Their fight scene in chapter 10. Even before finishing chapter 1, I knew that I was going to write a big fight scene and one that is similar to 509. It's a very very important scene to me.

Fave Olitz moments? The 'I hate you. I hate you too' phone call, 'I would cross that line again', those small moments when you could see how deeply and conflicted in love Olivia was (eg. watching him and Mellie dance during the first inauguration ball) - Liv is known to be not "accepting" of their love and whether she love him or not was always questioned, but a lot her actions and expressions when you look back showed how deeply she fell in love with him.

Fave Olitz fanfic moments? I forgot the title and the author but there was this one shot back then about Olivia who decided to end her engagement to Jake because she had unresolved feelings for Fitz. This fic took place a year I think after Fitz presidency. So she went all the way to Vermont regardless if it's years since her and Fitz last encounter and how bad their relationship ended - they fought about him going to war for her I think. So yeah she went all the way to Vermont not knowing what to expect and the writer did a good job of piecing them back together.

Do you like it when readers engage with you via comments / social media? Yes.

Story Reviews: Love them, hate them? BOTH! The reviews reminds of me of the live tweets when the show was on and the energy back then so I like that aspect. I appreciate readers that are grateful to authors and those that show how curious they are with the stories. I hate the intentional and consistent badmouthing to the point of bullying and creating competition among authors which made some quit or removed their stories. The nonstop attacks by some these "guest" reviewers really says a lot about their character. My friend Nina would always say that the writers don't owe themselves to anyone and that is highly true. We do it because we want to write and we make time for it without expecting anything in return really. Don't like it, then don't read it. Read and review the story you want to read then.

What advice would you give to a new Olitz writer? Just write! Don't care if you don't have experience at all or if you're too conscious about how not perfect your grammar is. The olitz fanfic community I think has a consistently growing audience so there will always be readers. Also most importantly, write the story that you want to tell. It is your work and only you will know how to go about it. Don't focus too much on the reviews/criticisms and don't let it solely dictate you on how to write your story.

Outside of your fics, do you have any fave Olitz stories or authors? PurplePineapple, torri.oats, Only You by anonolitz, that one shot I mentioned above.

Do you talk to other Olitz authors? If so, do you like the camaraderie? I've only interacted with like 2 I think hahaha. It's a very supporting and encouraging group! I think we're just excited to read each other's stories which is a nice feeling.

Have you made friends (people you talk to outside of fanfic) because of Olitz / Scandal fanfic? Yes and we've been friends for almost three years! She knows so much of my life honestly compared to my irl friends.

How to you get inspiration for your one-shots?/ What inspired you to start writing? / What made you want to start writing? What do you do to get inspiration in writing?/ What is your motivation or drive?

Before I started requests, I just had an accumulation of random stories in my head and had to write them out, now, most things. Sometimes it’s because of dreams, movie I watch with interesting scenes or plot twists, books or general ideas that just pop into my head, sometimes it’s also ‘what if’ type questions, if that makes sense.

Logan, the FeElS, plus my girl Laura plus my man Donald Pierce is in it.

The Dark Knight (the one with Bane and The Joker) both villains are extremely intimidating and Nolan was able to portray them in an extremely terrifying way whilst keeping us on edge for the whole movies! True masterpieces.

Not really no, I’ve never really looked up to anyone.

Pop, Classical not the Mozart type of classical.

Do You have any "rituals" regarding your writing process?

Yes! If it’s a series, I write the whole plot down on a book with details and elements that I want included. I keep it besie me to be sure I follow the plot whislt writing it.

Since I write in the evening, if there’s a one shot request that I lack inspiration about, I write something else and think of a plot when I’m in bed before i go to sleep. It really helps be get the requests written and in the queue.

I normally sit in front of my TV, catching up on my series or something and just write. I don’t really have a ritual other than this!

I’ve never really thought about it, I don’t know, I like my name!

Terrifying. heath Ledge did a fine good job at portraying someome that puts that unsettling feeling in your gut. Every one of his scenes are iconic. The best Joker so far in my opinion.

Friday Five: Not Just For Kids

Since I’ve been watching a lot of animated series while working on articles lately, I thought it would be nice to rec some “kids” shows for you guys. Now, when I say kids, I don’t necessarily mean series aimed at little kids. There’ll be a mixture here. I just think with animated shows, family shows, etc, there’s this stigma that only young kids can enjoy it unless it’s created by Seth MacFarlane. That’s not the case.

Five: Naruto

Since I wasn’t exceedingly familiar with the show before being assigned to write about characters from it (I’d only seen a handful of episodes when I was outlining my Naruto and Hinata list), I binged several story arcs to jog my memory and get a better feel for the characters. I actually expected, based on the few episodes I’d seen beforehand, that it was aimed at 10-12 year old boys. That is sooooo not the case. There’s a lot of more mature themes in the series and the story can get pretty dark. The anime, based on the manga, follows a young ninja-in-training who wants to grow up to be the leader of his village. His path is complicated by seemingly everyone hating him, not having a family, and the fact that he has a demon fox sealed inside his body.

Real talk: I don’t love the title character. He’s fun and all, and it is nice to see his arc play out over three series and multiple movies, but I actually love so many of the side characters more. Hinata, Shikamaru, Temari, and Asuma are my current faves. Make of that what you will.

Four: Miraculous: Tales Ladybug and Cat Noir

I’m going to admit that I only became interested in this show after seeing a dozen or so gift sets pop up on my dash. I was curious about just how a ladybug translated to a superhero theme and just why so many people thought the title characters were made for each other. So, I picked up the Free Comic Book Day issue this year… and then promptly binged the entirety of the show that was available on Netflix… and then went looking for more recent episodes online.

Yes, this show has some cheesy moments, and yes, there is the whole thing where kids learn a lesson with every episode. But, the mythology behind the powers, which you learn more about as the series progresses, is fascinating, and the characters are all very fun. There is some stereotypical slotting of characters into specific roles, but the longer the series runs, the less like stereotypes those characters seem. You also cannot help but root for Ladybug and Cat Noir to eventually figure things out and realizing the hero they’re fighting with is one of their classmates. It’s so fun, you guys.

Three: Sailor Moon

Kind of falling in the same line as Naruto, Sailor Moon is aimed more at teens than young kids, but with the way the show was dubbed and edited in the 90s, I think there’s this persistent reputation that it’s for youngsters. It can get very dark and very violent, so that’s not really the case.

I think everyone knows the gist of the show: reincarnated Moon Princess and her bodyguards have to save the world over and over again. If your knowledge is limited to what was aired in the US in the 90s though, you’re missing out on lesbian couples, nonbinary superheroes, complicated psychological traumas, and more. (Unlike a lot of Sailor Moon purists, I actually really enjoyed Sailor Moon Crystal as well.)

Two: Scooby Doo

What? I had to have a true classic on this list. I will admit that even as an adult, if I’m flipping through channels and happen to see an episode on, I’ll stop and watch. I will even watch the live action movies if I catch them on TV. There’s something ridiculously entertaining about a group of hippies solving mysteries with their talking dog.

As a side note, if Scooby Doo is just too cheesy for you, there is a grittier take. Scooby Apocalypse reimagines the characters in a world where there has been a zombie outbreak of sorts. It’s a comic book, and the art alone is worth the price. Everything is ridiculously detailed. It’s amazing. Of course, not all of your faves survive either as recent issues have shown, so read it at your own risk.

One: Power Rangers

I couldn’t possibly do a list of kids shows that adults can enjoy and not include Power Rangers. Power Rangers is probably the “youngest” in terms of tone and the way the show tells the stories. There’s an obvious need to market it to young kids in an effort to make the bulk of its money in toy sales. That doesn’t mean it’s not also enjoyable for adults. Specifically, Power Rangers: RPM, which basically threw out all of the universe’s rules, made fun of itself, and is set in an alternate dimension, is amazing. The recent comic book series, and the recent Lionsgate movie have also gone a long way in making the franchise appeal to older audiences.

I did not plan for everything on here to have movie and comic book adaptations as well. That’s just how it happened, okay? Even Naruto and Ladybug have live action movies in development. Also, apparently, I really prefer kids shows where everyone is a hero? I feel like that surprises no one.

What place that you’ve been to would you really recommend for a visit (and where is it?) this is so bland and boring and generic bc i haven’t been tons of places but i have been to london and really enjoyed myself & want to go back!! (taking the harry potter tour was a def highlight!!) i really liked canada too but there isn’t something that jumps out at me that says YOU SHOULD DEF GO SEE THIS!!

Have you ever traveled for fandom? lmao yessss so much, the first time was by myself to boston (while my family and i were on vacay in NYC) to go see aidan turner and dean o’gorman in 2013 since then i’ve gone several times to salt lake city for comic cons so YEA FANDOM TRAVEL!!!!

Is there a dynamic/ character archetype you notice you like a lot? WOW THIS IS HARD uhm maybe the characters that end up trying to take care of everyone bc i can relate?? either that or just optimistic characters who just shine and radiate positivity!!!

What’s your take on fandom discourse? fuckin... tired of it.... when there’s new stuff to have discourse about i usually am curious about what people think but that gets exhausting after like 3 days tops and i just try to ignore all of it and not participate as much as i can

If there was one thing you could change about your current fandom, what would it be? MORE CONTENT (well depending on the content.... content that won’t tear the fandom apart like everything else we’re getting new content for) AND AN ALTERNATIVE HAPPY ENDING SHOT BY PJ (y’all remember that article sometime after DOS saying that PJ wasn’t gonna kill Thorin?????) re: star wars: have them produce movies i actually want to see (AHSOKA MOVIE W TEMUERA MORRISON AS REX AND EWAN MCGREGOR AS OBI WAN) or or a... a live action rebels movie w a diverse cast (lmao i know it would never happen.... the movie or the diversity) or at least make finnpoe canon (with a side of reyrose and maybe a dash of a poly relationship *palpatine voice* dew it) and since i’m dabbling back into ATLA: more series about past avatars.... or movies oR SOMETHING

Do you have any scars? Several! The most prominent is across my forehead from when i was playing w my dad and he was throwing us into pillows onto their bed and i missed and hit the headboard and cracked my head open another one from when i cracked my head open on a stone patio but that one is more in my hair line and a bigger scar on my left elbow from tripping in a parking lot and skinning my elbow....

Favorite part of your body? my nose, bc it’s very hobbity!! i used to hate it and now i feel so blessed to have a cute hobbit nose~

If you could change one frivolous (aka not addressing major issues like war, poverty, racism, etc) thing about the world, what would it be? OHHHHHH GOOD QUESTION what frivolous thing would i like to change.... hm.... the world should let me own as many cats as i want without having to worry about run out of space and supplies tbh. that or i want cats to living longer bc i’m gonna miss my guy when we have to put him down :((

Marchae, however, was pretty sure she’d only seen the first Iron Man and The Avengers before this, so the first part of this Reaction is mostly just her trying to wrap her head around the admittedly gigantic cast.

The movies have simplified this -- partly because of licensing issues with the X-Men -- to telekinesis, force fields, and (though not seen in Civil War) some mind control, derived from experiments with an Infinity Stone.

I think it is annoying that this series tries to think it's cool and we talked about this briefly in person but it is confusing. There was an Avengers 1 with the same exact people and this seems like a legit continuation of that same story

CLINT: Well it is but isn't at the same time the avengers deal with the oncoming threat of Thanos where cap is more of a story that goes into his character and journey of being in our time you have to remember he's been frozen since the end of ww2 the only person left alive that he knew is Bucky. His whole world is dead. Cap is a man out of time

I think indeed I said in my notes and to quote myself: "THANK GOD I don't live in this world with these people"

CLINT: Ok why do you find that hard to believe

MARCHAE: I also said danger follows these people and thank god that General Ross is aware of their shenanigans and has checked their reckless a**es

MIRI: MARCHAE noooooo!

K: I’m with Marchae on this one. Ross is an antagonist, technically, and he’s a dick, obviously, but given the information available to him at any point in this movie (as opposed to in The Incredible Hulk) he’s damn near a voice of reason. And he stays out of T’Challa’s way, which is generally a good policy.

CLINT: But what if they weren't around to stop said danger

MARCHAE: (also you can swear if you'd like... I just usually don't but really it's fine) ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW

they don't behave with much caution and they blow all the things up (although I will add that if this had just been non stop action movie with fight scenes I would have been super happy!!!)

CLINT: So you'd just leave super villains to be and let the chips handle it

MARCHAE: I felt like honestly, I don't want any of them saving me and found myself wishing that Superman could be called to restore all the order to the world. Also I'd call actual people in who could handle their crap

CLINT: did you see man of steel

MARCHAE: I am a purist when it comes to Superman... I only watch the black and white and the Dean Cain versions...none of this new stuff BECAUSE (now go with me as I go down the list of my MANY observations (note i capped MANY) about your friends the avengers

CLINT: That's good because he destroyed metropolis and murdered

MARCHAE: and why I do not think that they are the individuals I'd want to protect me... I took notes **BOOM**

K: He’s not a robot in the old school sense, he’s made of vibranium and artificial muscle. Also, Iron Man’s armor is waterproof. As are a lot of electronic things in real life.

CLINT: Well how many people do you know that can rank through walls

Now while I think she is absolutely EVERYTHING in this movie she may not come near me . 1. if you remember I think I asked you every time she was on screen if she was in a romantic relationship with the person she was engaging in dialogue with to me that is problematic as a superhero she is absolutely stunning... she would probably be too busy seducing the criminal, you, me, my momma and my grandmother...

CLINT: So because she's pretty she can't save you

MARCHAE: NOW she's beyond pretty and I'm not entirely sure what that next step up from beyond pretty is but it is quite confusing why she works so hard to seduce EVERYONE. Its not a dig I just need her to stay focused on saving me. NOW she is also badass and she can fight and this combination of factors is easily why I named her Madam Hot Sauce (also to get the names straight because they all start with black)

CLINT: She is focused! she flippy kicks bab guys. You gotta focus on that

MIRI: Marchae, I approve of your brother

K: She also tazes them!

MARCHAE: She's hot and I think she's too self-aware of it to be terribly effective.. .NOW NOW come back

MIRI: DO NOT BLAME NATASHA ROMANOV FOR THE ACTIONS OF THE PATRIARCHY AND WHAT SHE WAS RAISED TO BE SHE IS DOING HER BEST and also remind me to show you her introduction in the first Avengers film where we see how deliberately she uses the way men view her to her advantage in her SUPER SECRET AND IMPORTANT SPY WORK TO SAVE THE DAMN WORLD

But seriously, she’s so great in Winter Soldier. The best relationship in the MCU to date is still Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff, Workplace Proximity Acquaintances.

It has Robert Redford in it. I feel like that’s an incentive you’ll care about.

ALSO like half of my final paper in Story Structures was about Winter Soldier.

K: EXCUSE YOU (shameless plug for some of my older culture writing), Iron Man is arguably the Avenger with the greatest track record of rigorous self-reflection and aggressive course-correction. I like Clint Barton but he can go fuck himself for his self-righteousness in the Raft.

As for Ant-Man, he got flushed out pretty fast, so no serious harm there.

CLINT: Nobody got it out though

and WHY NOT? you told me the man has no superpowers instead he has "enhancements" but can fly and has claws. NOPE

K: But T’Challa A) has armor that can shrug off bullets from a helicopter gunship, and B) does have powers, comparable to Cap’s. We don’t know the MCU’s version of the details yet (February 2018!), but we see that he’s superhuman from his jump in the second-act fight with Bucky, and also just the fact that he goes toe-to-toe with Bucky more successfully than Nat or Sharon.

CLINT: But the thing is although they are super it's not the powers that make them super

K: A of all, you keep making it sound like the armor is literally a tin can, but within the power hierarchy so far established by the MCU, Tony’s is the pinnacle of human weapons technology, and Rhodey’s isn’t that far behind. There aren’t like a hundred Visions walking around who make the armor totally obsolete.

Second and more seriously, I really think that at least in this movie Rhodey is the most clear-headed non-android Avenger. Even Nat’s perspective isn’t as grounded as his because she’s spent a lot of time hanging around Thor and the Hulk. That physical therapy scene at the end is one of the best and most important in Civil War. He knows he’s right, but he isn’t bitter about it. Steve’s particular Bucky crisis didn’t fit neatly into the lines drawn by the Accords, but nothing about it changes the hard truths of the policy problem. The world changed. Because the Avengers changed it. And only Team Iron Man was willing to accept the consequences of their own actions and change with it.

K: Although I love Steve Rogers, and I think (not that this is at all an original position) that he’s one of our most important high-profile pop culture examples of a character who is both virtuous and interesting (contra the conventional wisdom that terrible people or at least assholes are inherently more fascinating in fiction than simply good people), I agree that this movie doesn’t do enough to justify his positions. I guess it’s a testament to the direction and especially the performance, and of course to audience goodwill banked over the course of the MCU, that he still somehow manages to be the default protagonist of Civil War for most people. But as in many things, most people are wrong.

Oh falcon the one with the retractable wings that got shot down?

K: Paul Rudd can’t help but be charming but I’m never going to find Ant-Man’s power set particularly cool, and the best part of Ant-Man, the movie, is far and away Michael Peña.

K: Yeah, Falcon dodged Vision’s energy beam, that’s how War Machine got shot down instead

MARCHAE: if you do I swear I will disown you what happened that took his suit ?

K: CLINT make your sister read Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye run. If nothing else she’ll appreciate Kate Bishop.

And MARCHAE, if we’re going to talk about important woman archers in YA literature, Katniss Everdeen is preceded by DECADES by Susan Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia. Also, isn’t dismissing Hawkeye because “he’s a male Katniss Everdeen” like saying Katniss is redundant because “she’s a female Robin Hood”?

MARCHAE: I am not mean to them I am just expressing why they do not make me feel safe in my fictitious world.

They wanted to sign a treaty because they weren't doing their jobs properly
