And so it begins…

The year 2010 my age 18.  I had gotten my first job working at a movie theatre, life was great; I was earning my own money and got discounted popcorn and candy whenever I wanted. What more could I want?!

I was always a petite child but carried all of my weight in my belly. I danced consistently all of my childhood so my weight stayed fairly static.

 Once I began working and the dance classes lessened my weight slowly crept up and I began to put on what is not so affectionately known as the “freshman 15” (even though I had taken a year off before I started university and wasn’t technically a freshman). My clothes still fit so what was the problem? Nothing in my eyes.

A little under 2 years later I needed a second job; so I got a job working for a chain restaurant.

Here I was again getting discounted food. My life was excellent. I moved my way up the ranks and eventually became a floor manager. Now my meals weren’t just discounted they were free.

You mean I could have free restaurant quality food whenever I wanted? And for free?! You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know that chicken parmigiana, curly fries and Caesar salad every day is not a good diet. I only needed to utter the words “I feel like cake” and within 5 minutes I’d have a delicious chocolate cake brought to me by our well intentioned chefs. I got a little bit heavier.

Now you’re probably thinking well how big was she? Now let me just say I’ve never been huge and at this time I ranged between 55 – 60kg. To some that sounds like an ideal weight but a 5 kg fluctuation throughout the year was definitely noticeable in my clothes and on my 5 foot frame the change was always obvious.

In 2015 I got invisalign braces and anyone who has had braces knows how difficult it is to eat. Taking my braces in and out the first few months was painful so I would only take my braces out to eat twice a day. I ate my breakfast and my customary chicken parmigiana during my break at 2pm and then I wouldn’t eat again until the next day. It was with this method that I noticed a weight drop and so did other people. I felt good about myself but as the braces became less painful the more I took them out and started eating normally again and surprise! Surprise! The weight came back.

As an avid gym hater whenever it came up I’d brag that I flat out hated the gym. But it was around this time I thought that I should join one. I joined the local community gym. I’d go do 20 minutes on the treadmill a couple of bicep curls, some crunches and call it a day. This did not last long.

Early 2016 I started working at a hotel, I tried the best I could but let me tell you, having to resist eating the left over breakfast pastries every damn day was difficult and I didn’t often succeed (my personal fav the almond croissants) but then a family friend introduced me to myfitnesspal – a calorie tracking app to help people lose weight. This was perfect I could eat what I wanted and lose weight provided I kept within my assigned calories. It was hard at first but I slowly got the hang of it and dropped some kgs - the lowest I got to whilst using the app was 53.6kg. I was thrilled. I maintained the 53.5 – 55kg weight for the rest of the year.

2017 – I change jobs again moving to another hotel, over the Christmas break I had slowly stopped using myfitnesspal (I figured I didn’t need it) before I knew it I was back up to 59kg. 2 months into the new job and I was promoted to an office role. I was very paranoid about putting on weight as I was no longer moving around all day in the restaurant.

By April I had had enough of the constant fluctuation and began lite n easy. My cousin had started using it and had lost some weight so I thought why not. Coming from an Italian background the food was an adjustment but altogether not terrible. Did I stick to it 100%. NO. I figured since it was a calorie controlled diet if I wanted a piece of cake after dinner with my cup of tea (a weakness of mine) then I could.  It would only put me a little over my allocated calories so there was no harm. Right? The weight didn’t go anywhere. Becoming obsessed, I weighed myself every day in order to help control my eating throughout the day. If I was less than the day before I relaxed, if I wasn’t I was super strict.

 At June 2017 I was 60kg, I vowed to get my act together and take it seriously, after all what was the point of wasting my money on a product that I wasn’t using properly?

 I used events coming up in my life to set goals I wanted to reach. For a family christening in September I wanted to be 55kg and the morning of I weighed in at 55.1kg (I was a bit disappointed but it was pretty much close enough) by October for my cousins 18th I wanted to be 54kg I weighed in on the morning of at 54.1kg. The small goals I set myself seemed to work. I kept on this same trajectory and by 25th November after being super strict for 6 weeks straight I was at my lowest weight I could remember - 53.3kg.I was thin but still 3.3kg from my goal weight. People noticed and complimented me on my weight loss. I was 7kg down in 7 months. I was proud of myself. But was I completely happy, no not really. I hated being invited out anywhere – it stirred a panic in me. Where were we going? What was on the menu? What could I eat? How much would I weigh tomorrow? I managed to get through the silly season with minimal damage to my waistline.

 February 2018 I slowed down on the lite n easy I figured I had learnt enough about portion size and calorie controlling that I could do my own breakfasts and just get lite and easy lunch, dinner and snacks.  Towards the middle of the year I was fed up as I had hit a plateau and I started to give up.

 And then July 2018 I was invited to a black tie industry awards night.

 I bought my dress and whilst it fit, losing a couple of kilos wouldn’t go astray. “I know I’ll drop my calories as low as I can” I thought – after all losing weight is calories in vs calories out so the lower my calories means I would lose more weight right?!

 I dropped my calories to 700- 800 calories a day. For three weeks straight I did this and let me tell you it was not healthy or fun. I was tired, angry and moody. I snapped at anyone and refused to even look at any other food no matter how many times my mum tried to get me to eat more, but I was 26 so there wasn’t much she could do (I actually think that any time she prepped food for me she added more in than what I asked just so I would be eating more)

 I lost over 3kgs in 3 weeks. The day after the event I weighed myself and I had put on over 2kgs. I wasn’t happy.

If you have stuck with me this far into my story you can probably guess how the rest of the year went. I dropped down again to the 53’s and then back up to the 58’s each day weighing myself and being pissed off if my weight had gone up by even 100g.

Heading in to November I had a holiday booked to Hawaii. As it drew closer I kept telling myself I’d drop my calories again but just the mere thought of having to always be hungry and cranky was enough to convince me not to do it. I wanted to at least be 53kg when I left since I knew I’d put on weight over there. I figured if I’m really thin when I get there and put on 5kg I would only be 58kg when I came back and I could lose the weight again. After all I had before.

So about 3 weeks out I thought I better start prepping and again I dropped my calories to 700 – 800 by skipping lunch and went for a 30 min walk outside of the office instead. I dropped weight but only reached low 55’s. That would have to do and I vowed to myself I’d join a gym when I got back and lose the weight properly once and for all.

I went to Hawaii and I ate what I wanted – why the hell not I was on vacation!

 I came back early December, I was scared to get on the scale. I weighed 64kg. I had put on just under 9kg in 10 days. How was it possible? I was mortified, upset and angry. I got straight back to dieting and did join a gym. I managed to lose a couple of kilos but a family tragedy resulted in some comfort eating and my weight ballooned back up to 64kgs.

 This brings me to 24th December 2018 where the story really begins…

[from: Taylor] For the hundredth time, yes, Mr. Kirkland.

[to: Taylor] Why, though? Can’t we just, I don’t know, use a photo from the last shoot and have them send whatever they want me to answer on e-mail? You know how badly I hate dealing with people I don’t know.

[from: Taylor] Mr. Kirkland, please, we’ve already talked about this. It’s just a single interviewer who will ask no more than a few questions and take a few photos. He won’t even actually record the interview. It isn’t a press conference with a hundred journalists.

[to: Taylor] I still don’t see the point! What’s the huge difference? It’s not like I’m big on PR anyway. Okay, maybe the photos from the last shoot are a bit old, but why the interview?

[from: Taylor] You’re going to come across as cold or standoffish, Mr. Kirkland. As much as we don’t mind you being private, it’s not good to come off as rude or arrogant. Come on, think of it as a deal with a publisher or an editor.

[to: Taylor] That is so reassuring.

[from: Taylor] You wound me.

[from: Taylor] Anyway, your interviewer is coming on Thursday at 2PM at meeting room 6. Be sure to wear a decent suit for that!

[to: Taylor] What the

Arthur worked mostly from home, but was used to wearing suits, even though he wasn’t a fan of ties (although he believed all the fuss everyone made around it was too much). No matter how much his writing was compact and hardly ever included difficult jargon, people just didn’t seem to want to negotiate with a man in a hoodie and running shoes, which meant every single time he had to show up to discuss a minor thing at the publisher, he had to dress up formally, combed up hair included. Formalwear could get stuffy on warmer days; however, thankfully, the air conditioning was working just fine.

Which meant it could not be that that was getting on his nerves; a quick glance at the large digital clock on the wall made it clear he hadn’t been waiting for long and the interviewer wasn’t late either.

His bottle of water was already empty and the interviewer hadn’t even arrived. Honestly, what had he done to deserve such a thing? There were so many drafts on his PC at home and all the ideas that were now boiling in his mind would be lost before he even got home. This was nonsense; how was a writer supposed to do his job if he was stopped form, well, writing when he wanted the most? Quite honestly, it was just an excuse to get away from there, but at this point he was willing to do just about anything to get away from there.

Time dragged by. Now the interviewer was officially fifteen minutes late. Couldn't he just leave? The bottle was now empty and he started considering if it wouldn't be rude to drink up the interviewer's – didn't want yours to be taken? Should be here on time, you punk.

His thoughts were cut off by the soft buzzing of his phone. Then it buzzed twice. Then one more time. He was not supposed to use his phone in the meeting rooms, but he figured out it would be ok if nobody was there but him, right? As the blond checked the notifications, he saw they were all from his editor.

[from: Taylor] Please don’t kill me

[from: Taylor] I mixed up the dates

[from: Taylor] It’s actually tomorrow

[to: Taylor] What

[to: Taylor] I'm leaving now

[from: Taylor] I’m so sorry Mr. Kirkland, I’ve already called a cab

[from: Taylor] Please do come next week though

[to: Taylor] You want me to what

With a sigh, Arthur put his phone in his pocket, got up and left the room. He wasn't paid enough to deal with all this bullcrap. Hell, money wouldn't ever be enough to pay for this shit.

The cab ride was silent, Arthur only giving the address in the beginning and paying and curtly thanking the driver while getting off the cab. By the time he was at his doorstep, the sun was already setting – terrible traffic and all that. Maybe he should check the local pub, now it was probably already open... Nah, not in the mood. He'd probably just drink too much and have a terrible hangover the next day. Arthur showered and made himself some instant food (he honestly didn't even care about what he was eating at this point) and checked his social media and instant messaging apps (there were quite a lot), not finding anything interesting as usual –college acquaintances still partying like teenagers, cousins with their children, his mom sending her daily "good morning" messages that he only saw at night, fake news that he couldn't understand how so many people actually believed. Today hadn't really been a productive day, so he had to work twice as hard tomorrow, or at least that was what he told himself as he drifted off to sleep before it was even completely dark.

He'd just forgotten to check his SMS messages, which meant his notification board was completely taken over by his editor by the morning.

[from: Taylor] It's not the interviewer's fault, I can't just cancel everything now

[from: Taylor] Please, Mr. Kirkland, I know this is frustrating but we need it to promote the next book as well, remember?

[from: Taylor] Mr. Kirkland?

[from: Taylor] Mr. Kirkland, are you there?

[from: Taylor] Mr. Kirkland, I know you are upset, but don't leave me hanging like this!

Nice. He woke up and had to deal with this first thing in the morning? Way to go, Arthur. Way to go. He hated to admit it, but Ms. Taylor had a point. Plus, even though he hadn't really done any of that on purpose, leaving her hanging had kind of been a dick move, so at this point the writer didn't feel like he really had any chance to refuse.

[to: Taylor] Sorry, fell asleep and woke up now

[to: Taylor] Fine, I'll go

[to: Taylor] But double-check if it's really today

This was giving him a migraine. He just hoped it would end soon.

It would not, as it turned out.

The journalist and photographer that had been assigned to Arthur's interview got stuck in a faraway airport due to the weather and wouldn't be able to come until well after office hours. Why assign him someone who wasn't even in town anyway?

Ms. Taylor was making calls and sending e-mails nonstop, trying to find someone in his place, while Arthur had long ago given up on keeping up appearances and was snoring lightly, sitting at the table in the small meeting room after grumbling for hours about lost ideas and productivity. Or at least until Ms. Taylor shook him awake.

"Mr. Kirkland. Wake up. Mr. Kirkland!"

"Hmmm... What now?"

"I found a man that's available right now. He's worked with us a few times. He'll be here in 20 minutes."

Arthur, despite still having sleep in his eyes, arched an eyebrow in suspicion.

"Are you sure it's a good idea to call someone in such a short notice?"

"He's worked with us before, Mr. Kirkland. He's a good professional, you'll be just fine. Actually, you'll be more than fine. You'll like how he isn't pushy or invasive."

"Ok, ok, fine, you've already called him anyway. What's his name?"

"Kiku Honda."

Using a pseudonym was practical, guaranteed his privacy (at least to some level, since his face was still known) and generally let him live his life in anonymity, or as close to it as possible. Sure, he would have liked a bit more of alone time, which had been restricted to the times he was at home ever since his book series became a hit, but hordes of fans wherever he went, paparazzi or flooding requests from readers to add him on social media weren't a problem as of yet, and he appreciated it.

But now? Now he cursed having opted not to use his actual name when he started publishing, because this very detail put him in the delicate situation of being interviewed by an ex-roommate... Whom he used to have the hugest crush on and actually based quite a few of his early characters on. Now, he was no creep, only the drafts written still on his college days or works that had been based on those had anything to do with Honda and he'd eventually moved on, but that was... Embarrassing, to say the least. If only he'd used his actual name to publish, then maybe Honda would remember the terrible reputation he'd had as a college student and refuse!

(not that it was going to actually happen, but Arthur could try to fool himself, huh?)

Ms. Taylor had forced him to get himself to look minimally presentable, so there really was nothing to do but wait until the doomed meeting happened. Really, why was he getting so worked up? It wasn't like his feelings were reciprocated; Honda may not even remember him. Honestly, not even he thought about it that much at that point.

The interview had been a disaster. Arthur had been so desperate to not let it seem too obvious to Honda that the inspiration to a few characters had been him (a few of which he specifically asked about) that, in the end, he didn't really answer anything that was asked in the depth that he wanted, could have otherwise covered, or really in any depth. Whatever he'd said in that interview could have very well been generated by an automated text generator, and he was not proud of that. At all.  

He plopped on the bed after having had a few too many drinks and somehow managing to come back home on his own – none of his (admittedly scarce) friends were in town. Thankfully, he just basically forgot his phone even existed, or else he'd probably just embarrass himself further.

Arthur almost fell from bed as he read those words next morning, thinking that must have been a dream or a hallucination. Damn, had he taken something he didn't remember? It couldn't be. That shitty interview had actually gotten Honda interested? No, it couldn't be. He was probably just saying that out of politeness.

Hello, Mr. Honda. Thank you for your kind words. Of course I remember you, I just didn't think I should mention that at the interview; I wouldn't mind adding you on social media or talking more, provided that you keep my name private.

No, wait, what had he just sent? Stupid Arthur, was he a love-struck teenager all over again? Keeping contact was a bad idea from the start, Honda probably wasn't even that interested-

Thank you very much, Mr. Evans. Would you mind meeting up for coffee sometime later this week, then?

This wasn't making any sense at this point.

Of course! I don't have any other appointments.

To be honest, such straightforwardness was even a big uncharacteristic of Honda – or at least, of the Honda he'd known from quite a few years ago. But who knows what life might have brought him? Maybe... Maybe it could be interesting to know what had happened...

… Was what Arthur would have liked to think, but deep inside he was freaking out.

A few months later, he'd laugh about this whole ordeal, but the Arthur from now just had no way of knowing this.

July 10 and 11, 2019

Wednesday morning we woke up at 3:30. I think I got about four hours of sleep, so it could be worse. We lazed around for a bit, then I got up and changed, brushed my teeth, and zipped up my bags. Ingvar was taking me to the Hilo airport, for my flight at 6:15. It was so early, ugh.

We drove about 10 minutes to the airport. It was sad to say goodbye to Ingvar, but he’ll be coming home in two weeks, so at least it’s not very long. When he dropped me of around 4:30, there was no one at the airport! Haha. Security wasn’t even open and the Hawaiian Airlines counter wasn’t either. Oh, well. I called and talked to Dad, and sat outside. It was an open air airport, just like Kona. It was warm, of course! Around 5:15, they opened security. I had already checked in online, and security was really quick.

I hung around downstairs for a bit, where the few stores they had weren’t even open. I wanted to grab breakfast/snack for my long day of traveling, but that wasn’t going to happen in Hilo, haha. I headed to my gate and got in line for zone 2 boarding. I had got a seat in row 9, because I was pretty worried about my hour and twenty minute layover in Honolulu. Usually I wouldn’t be worried about that, but I had to leave security and check my bag with my new airline, Jetstar. The flight to Honolulu was super quick. It took about 45 minutes. I was in a middle seat and blogged the whole time, and prayed to God that I would make my flight.

I got off the plane by 7:05, with 25 minutes to get to the Jetstar counter before they closed it an hour before boarding. The airport was pretty spread out, but I did it! I didn’t even have to run! A really nice lady helped me. She is even getting me a transit visa in case my flight was delayed for Australia, while I’m on my flight to Sydney. I was so happy I made it!

Next up was security. The line wasn’t long, and I didn’t have my roller bag, so getting through it was really quick. I called Mom and talked to her for a few minutes while I was walking towards my gate. I stopped at Starbucks (hallelujah!), grabbed some snacks at the newsstand (Jetstar charges for everything, so I wasn’t going on without plenty of food), and posted my blogs and an instagram picture. I walked up to the gate when my section was being seated. How perfect is that?!

I was assigned a middle seat in row 26, which is actually only four rows past first and business class. A dad and son were seated with the aisle and window, so they offered the aisle seat for me. That worked out! The flight was about 10 hours from Honolulu to Sydney. It was all in daylight, but the plane had those windows that automatically dim. For most of the flight I tried to sleep. I wrote some, ate some snacks, and watched some Netflix that I had downloaded to my phone. Jetstar has entertainment but it costs money! Haha, good thing I came prepared.

The plane landed early in Sydney. My first time in Australia! My layover was about two hours long. Between Hawaii and Australia we had crossed the International Date Line, so now it was around 2pm on July 11th. I went through security again, then hung out in the main area. There was a lot of shops, lounge-like seating, and Starbucks, of course. I had a hibiscus refresher and a muffin. I basically caught up on my phone for the layover. I grabbed a few more snacks for the six hour flight to Bali, then headed to the gate. When I got on the plane, me and another guy had the same seat assigned. We figured it out with the flight attendant, and they moved him back. He was nice, but a bit obnoxious about traveling and doing drugs in Bali. Meh.

The flight from Sydney to Bali was pretty uneventful. I couldn’t get very comfortable, but eventually I did and slept most of the flight. Our flight was all in the dark. I watched a little bit of Netflix and listened to some music.

Around 9 we landed in Bali! Now I’m on Singapore time, so I’m 15 hours ahead of home. I had to go through customs, get my bag, and go through immigration. I’m super thankful that my bag made it all the way from Honolulu! Janell was getting in about an hour after me, so I waited for her and caught up on the WiFi on my phone. Janell came through immigration with her friend Eugene, and it was so good to see her!

Janell has our driver for the week(!!!) Buddy, pick us up. It was really nice to catch up with Janell and meet Eugene. He took us the the villa where five of Janell’s friends were waiting: Adam, Alfonso, Kay, Allison, and Bon. They were all really nice! Our villa had five bedrooms and a private pool! Wow, I’ve never stayed at a place like this before! The five who had been here all day were pretty drunk, so Janell, Eugene, and I joined them. I had a few Indonesian beers and we all hung out listening to music and being in the (cold!) pool for a few hours. Around 1, I decided to go to bed. I had been up so long since I had left Hilo that morning! I took a cold shower, then immediately fell asleep in one of the upstairs bedrooms. Janell and I shared a bedroom, and I didn’t even hear her come up a few hours later. This was gonna be a fun week! :]

Within a minute I was all packed up I've got a ticket to another world I don't wanna go I don't wanna go

 “Do you really have to?”, Rene whined, not so playfully, from the bed while Yoongi was trying his best to close his suitcase which was filled with clothes for his tour which was taking place around the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. Yoongi pursed his lips, annoyed as he turned around to look at her “You know its my job. I have to go. I warned you even before we dated”. Rene sighed. He never left her alone for more than 2 months before. All their tours in the past had breaks in between them so he could visit her again in Korea but not this one. “But this time youre leaving for almost 5 months. That’s almost half a year…”, Rene said quietly. “I told you, the company wanted us to visit more cities because of popular demand. We cant say no”, Yoongi snapped, zipped up his suitcase and turned to her, “I told you that this would happen some day”. Rene’s eyes filled with tears when his voice became significantly louder. When Yoongi saw that, his eyes soften and he sighed before walking towards her and engulfing her in a hug. “Im sorry. I shouldn’t have snapped at you. Its just that there is so much work and stress in the company right now. PDnim wanted us to make a surprise song for the tour last minute and its very hectic since there are new dance moves. Im sorry..I really don’t want to go too. I don’t want to leave you”, he softly said. Rene sniffed “Im going to miss you”. “Im going to miss you too”.

 The ride to the airport was so silent that the only thing they could hear was their own breathing and the sounds of cars racing past. Yoongi glanced at Rene at the corner of his eyes, guility. She was staring out the window blank. He wanted to say something, she wanted to say something. But they did not. When they arrived at the airport, Rene helped Yoongi with his luggage and together they went to the gate to bid their goodbyes. Yoongi pulled Rene in for a hug and pecked her forehead as Rene buried herself in his arms, sobbing quietly while trying to remember his scent which would always comfort her. Goodbyes were always hard, but this particular one was the hardest. “Don’t leave me, Yoongi”, Rene whispered. “Ill never leave you. This is only for a while. These few months will go by in a flash and we’ll be back together in no time”, Yoongi pecked her lips and wiped away her tears, “In the meantime you can always sleep with my Kumamon and Sugabear, they can keep you company”. Rene smiled but it fell when the announcement for the plane came on. “I have to go”, Yoongi gulped. Rene hugged Yoongi once more before letting him go. “I love you, Rene. See you in a while”, Yoongi smiled sadly. “I love you”.

 “Reneeeee”, Yoongi called out as softly as possible (Jimin was sleeping on the bed near his) when her face popped up on the screen of his Macbook. “Yoongi I miss you so much oh my god”, Rene pouted as she layed down on her bed under the covers. “Hows your day, jagi?”, Yoongi turned to his side. “Meh I guess. I got an A for my assignment though”, Rene said and Yoongi lit up “Ohoho, I knew you could do it”. “How’s yours though?”, Rene asked. “Tiring. We rehearsed for the whole day and the concert tonight was tougher than usual. The stage was bigger and all”, Yoongi sighed, “What time is it there?”. “Around 2pm but Im so sleepy. I spent the whole week, day and night on the assignment. I feel my eyelids drooping”, Rene yawned. “Haha. Its around 1am here. Everyone’s already asleep”, Yoongi turned around and smiled at Jimin who was sleeping with his mouth opened wide, “Jimin looks hilarious and I think I can here Namjoon’s snores from here and..Rene?”, Yoongi chuckled as he turned back to his computer because of the lack of response from Rene. “I swear to God”, Yoongi smiled when he saw her asleep in front of her camera. “How cute”, he whispered to himself as he slowly fell asleep with the Skype page still on screen with Rene sleeping soundly.

It’s been a while!

I got a fever last monday. Me and mum went to see La La Land today. It was entertaining but personally I would’ve wanted a bit more singing and choreography. And a happier fantasy ending but that’s just me. Objectively it was a really good movie. I really liked how one of the themes of the movie was “they just don’t make *insert cultural product* like they used to” and my first thought after the movie was “they just don’t make musicals like they used to” before I caught the irony of it. So in a way it was a genious idea, just not to my tastes necessarily.

I was going to play some DA:I tonight but I spent an hour on Skype with a friend from Israel and I’ve spent another hour writing this. It’ll take a third hour simply to start the game so I think that plan’s off the table for tonight. In stead I’ll talk about Mass Effect Andromeda a bit so if you’re trying to avoid all spoilers, stop reading now! Not like I talk about in game stuff but anyway.

I’m personally going to soak up every piece of information and theory that I possibly can before launch, and I’m doing great so far. I’m running out of YouTube videos to watch hah.. Since I won’t play until September I’m going to avoid spoilers after launch though, as much as possible anyway. I figured my love for the default Scott Ryder is because he looks like Cullen. Still up to more info on the romances before I decide which Ryder I’m going to play as, but Scott is a firm contestant right now. I feel like it would also make romancing and roleplaying easier since he wouldn’t be as much of a self insert character.. Obviously also depends on if any of the characters actually feel romanceable to me - unlike in the original ME trilogy where nobody was “my type”.

Anyway I think I’ll get something to eat, and hopefully blog a bit more often now that I’m back to health and not traveling.
