Was wondering, over here -- what's your favorite type of Scout characterization(s)? I've been in this fandom for almost a decade, and (imo) everyone's got a slightly different spin on him, ranging from "category 5 annoyance, cartoonishly egocentric" to "earnest but afflicted with Early 20s Brain" to anything anywhere in between or beyond that. Got any specific hallmarks you're fond of? Stuff you tend to disregard?

hrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

alright so naturally i’m always the type to drift towards characters who, even as you’re reading them, you can kinda see the lenticular way they can be interpreted. you can tell by the author’s tone how the character interprets themselves, and how they’re interpreted by the viewer, and how they’re interpreted by whoever they’re talking to—three-dimensional, in shortform. with grey areas. sort of taking them outside of their trope and giving them the leeway of, at times, even assuming that the media itself is biased regarding them.

which is how i approach tf2, as well—the medium they exist in is, by virtue of being an absurdist comedy, an unreliable narrator.

so when you posit the stances “scout is like if gaston was wicked annoying and 150 pounds max but didn’t notice” vs “earnest, flawed early 20s dude without a ton of perspective on his life”, as if they’re two ends of the spectrum, my answer is, they don’t have to be.

i’m not a huge stickler on interpretations of characters, to be honest, but i do have a few icks with some interpretations of scout. any interpretation that implies he’s one of those dudes who says things for shock value or for a reaction really irritate me, mostly because there’s nothing in the text of canon that would even remotely imply that. scout wouldn’t say some weird shit about a girl going to make him a sandwich or whatever, he’d draw a picture of spy getting hit by a car and then hand it to spy because they don’t get along. giving scout these weird greasy traits just because at a glance you might characterize him that way in the netflix live-action remake, it just comes across as like. like maybe you don’t know what you’re talking about actually. like, the cheapest easiest possible characterization. the wish dot com characterization.

and i know it might seem a little bit like the pot and kettle on this one since i do take such heavy liberties with the characters, but here’s the thing—my argument isn’t that changing the characters in your fanwork is Bad. that’s all fanwork. that’s all interpretation. my argument is that making tf2 characters weirdly bigoted and filling in weird shock value stuff for no reason is fuckin’ lazy.

it’s much harder, and much more vulnerable, and takes way more time and effort, to try to write these characters with good jokes, or with human personalities, or with actual motivations and thought into their behavior, etc etc. and going “scout says [insert alphabetical list of homophobic slurs], because it’s the 70s lol they hate gay ppl” just tells me you’re not capable of writing well.

that’s not to say i even want scout to necessarily be a good person. i think it’s actually kind of funny that he decided to like, learn manners and etiquette and put on a prom for miss pauling, because having a dude who kills people for money do some cute shit like that is weirdly sweet, in a roundabout way. i think the canon of the text would imply that scout tf2 is kind of a sweet dude. but like, y’know. obviously nobody on the team is mentally or emotionally well. mentally and emotionally sound people don’t die and murder for money. writing scout as particularly egocentric, overly concerned with his own life (either in an anxious way or a narcissistic way), loud mouthed, temperamental, a sore loser, unsportsmanlike, those are all takes i’ve seen that have been really interesting spins of his character.

my favorite traits in him are probably things like him being a hugely impulsive talker, way exaggerative of positive emotions (like whenever he or someone else does some cool shit), maybe a little overdramatic and whiny about the small things, him being dude who will see his friend punch someone across the bar and will sprint over to punch them too, a real ride-or-die guy, kinda stubborn. maybe a little catty sometimes, earnest in a weirdly brave sort of way, clumsy or bad luck or both. dude with a weirdly nonexistent sense of shame or embarrassment except about, like, if he finds out he was wearing his shirt backwards when talking to Miss Pauling or something silly like that. and not even necessarily all of these at once! i just like these characterizations in general, and scout tends to get these ones.

to be so honest, making a decision on who to match you with took me a lot longer than it usually does. i went though so many options— hiori, kunigami, chigiri, nagi— and none of them fit in the way that i wanted them to. whenever i'd try to pair traits and interests, everything felt really forced and that's the last thing i want to when doing a personality pairing; but eventually i landed on reo! i think you and reo fit together very very well, and i'm pretty confident on that!

one thing that you and reo can mutually relate, is your need to achieve. you're both extremely ambitious people and when you have a goal, there's no stopping you until you reach it. reo knows that you understand that obsession and crave for success. he doesn't feel judged when he's overly passionate about something and talks about it for hours on end, knowing that you're listening to every word he says with an open mind. most people think he's crazy for believing he and nagi can be kings of the football world, but you don't think that. you don't think that at all. if anything, you're right next to him cheering him on; while also giving him a few small reality checks along the way.

for the most part, hopeless romance isn't something that reo thinks about. typically, girls fawn over him due to his parent's money, only wanting to become a rich heiress without actually liking reo for his real personality; they prefer his phony one. you, however, introduce him to the truth that there can be love without manipulation or falseness. you show him how little gestures matter and that he shouldn't waste his time on people who aren't patient enough to see him as he really is. there is a potential love story in reo's book and you're the only one who can start the next chapter and help him read on.

now, you have many hobbies that reo isn't necessarily extremely interested in; but that's not an issue. the thing is with reo, is that he loves to get involved in the things his loved ones enjoy— if you have a hyperfixation on a video game, kdrama, or musician, he's right there beside you to listen or watch along. he loves to splurge on you; aka: taking you out on any kind of date your heart desires and buying you anything you have your eye on— and he's such a doting boyfriend that you can't help but love him for his obsession with making you happy. you've taught reo how to love something other than a hobby, and he's going to show you how thankful he is for that every day.

BRACKET FINALLY DONE !!

bracket finally sorted , 128 characters ( out of over 500 submissions ) . i tried to make things as even as possible , but some pairings are a little lopsided because unfortunately things dont match up ideally liek that irl ^^;;

most ppl wanted to either include iconic characters or have them in an adjacent bracket . i agree that you cant have a pigtail poll and NOT include these icons , but i also agree that its not very exciting to have them in tha main race -- liek , you know theyre just gonna crush all tha little guys and make it to the end . so what we'll do is have tha eight most iconic pigtail wearers ( decided by highest number of submissions and also liek . generally popularity / we know theyre icons ) compete in their own bracket against eachother , and tha winner of THAT bracket will face off tha winner of tha main bracket in a final showdown . so basically this'll be liek what they do in real sports ( or so im told lol ) , where certain teams will get to skip some matches and move straight to tha finals

Asking writers to take risks is missing the point. It’s not that writers aren’t willing to take artistic risks — I’m sure many have spec scripts and ideas percolating — the issue is what kind of FINANCIAL RISKS the Hollywood production companies are willing to make. But Disney, Sony, MGM aren’t financing weird shit. They’re not even really financing mid-budget traditional things like comedies, dramas, rom-coms. Big studios have stopped investing in anything but things with established fan bases — sequels and existing IP and reboots. Because they’re they ones who don’t take risks. A writer can have a great, unique idea, but we’ll never know because no one is paying to make those movies.

You would think they could learn some lessons from one of the studios taking risks A24. EEAAO was weird as shit, but it made a ton of money and won a ton of Oscars.

Yea, I agree... It's the studios not willing to take risks. 😕 It's also the studios that don't allow certain things to be greenlit.

Honestly? Maybe it's all part of a bigger problem tbh. 🤔 I'm now starting to wonder if maybe studios aren't willing to take risks because they really can't afford to. 👀

There could be a lot of smoke and mirrors stuff going on that we don't know about. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Remember, a lot of films had to halt production due to covid. There's also the economy. Perhaps these studios are in worse financial shape than ppl realize.

I also think that as costs have risen in just about EVERYTHING over the years, the costs to MAKE a film have probably risen as well. 🤷🏾‍♀️

When you're not doing as well financially, you're less likely to take risks. You need guaranteed HITS.

With that said, I do think that studios like A24 are much more likely to take risks. I still don't really think EEAAO should have won all of the Oscars that they won lol 😆 (no offense), but I admire them for taking risks, and perhaps that was a sign that ppl want to see more risk-taking in film art. 🤷🏾‍♀️

No I can't play any instruments unfortunately, I tried learning the violin in elementary school but quit because the strings hurt my fingers lmaoo if I ever do pick up an instrument I'd probably want to learn how to play piano or guitar. My heart wants to try drumming but I know I'll never develop the coordination it takes for that lol

Favorite show growing up as a kid was probably Wizards of Waverly Place or Zach and Cody. And I am woman enough to admit I watched Playhouse Disney for probably way too long lol (like I'm talking into middle school🤣) I loved SpongeBob too and courage the cowardly dog

I want to be a Target girl soooooo bad but they're so expensive. i would love to learn italian too. i think my problem is that growing up when i was in school, i didn't want to learn a language bc i was afraid of speaking it wrong in front of ppl that could speak it right. also i hated getting graded on whether or not i could understand the language. but now since i'm not in school anymore, maybe learning a language won't be too bad.

i never learned how to play an instrument until i got into my 20s. i self taught myself the ukuele, and i'm not the best but i'm pretty okay at it lol and i always wanted to learn the drums too, but there's just no place to really learn that and drumkits are so fucking expensive. i also wanted to learn to play the harp, but like idk where to even learn that either.

playhouse disney was my shit when i was younger. pb and j otter, rollie-pollie ollie, omg i used to love those shows ! when i got a bit older, i would say one of my favorite shows was probs suite life, hannah montana, or jonas/jonas la. but that's only bc i loved the jonas brothers lmao

yeah target is expensive, but they do have some cute stuff that isn't too bad. and the walmart in my area is fucking crazy too. i legit want to buy stuff from there but... not with all those ppl in it omg. the target near my house isn't too bad for groceries and whatnot, and i don't mind buying some stuff from there bc i know it will actually last decently long. i have a pair of jeans from there from like 3 years ago that are still going strong, which is a first since most jeans rip or get a hole in them.

interestingly enough, ketchup and mustard both kinda gross me out on their own, unless they are with specific stuff. ketchup is good with really terrible fries, and (spicy) mustard is good on hot dogs. and then both are good on burgers. regular mustard... that's gross to me and i'm not sure why.

i don't like salt and vinegar chips. i think the last time i tried them was when i was in elementary school, and they were so bitter to me. vinegar kinda makes me feel ill when i smell it, idk why. but maybe now since my smelling and tasting senses are all fucked up, maybe i should try them again.

i don't know how to drive actually, but i do plan to learn at some point in the near-ish future. my problem honestly is that i just have kinda bad anxiety and to top it off, i don't have enough money to afford a car or insurance so... yeah. but if i could drive, i would want a jeep. that's the dream car. the car my mom has is really nice, so i would drive that if i knew how to.
