hello i am back ! thank you sm for your last post, i really enjoyed it!! anyways i have fallen down the jd rabbit hole. could i request a jd x reader where reader is very affectionate but jd is hesitant bc of veronica (he saw her suicide but moved before he knew it was fake and feels super guilty) then reader starts to get a little more distant because of the lack of reciprocation on jd's end. anyways this is gonna go on for too long, could u make it end with reader finding out what happened and reader comforts jd, and he just suddenly melts from the affection. (IM CRYING THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE I'M SORRY )
Tumblr media
Summary: ^^
Pairing: Jd x reader
Warnings: mention of suicide, pretty much all warnings that come with anything heathers related. also probably typos and grammatical errors cos I’m tired
Word count: 774
Request something here !
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Relief washed over you when you heard the familiar creak of your window opening. Looking up, you found your boyfriend, Jd, gracefully climbing into your room, a mischievous glint in his eyes as always. He got comfy beside you in your bed, snuggling up as he pulled your diary towards him, trying to peek.
“No.” You snapped it closed and popped it on your bedside table, telling him off.
“You’re really never gonna let me read that thing?”
“Maybe one day, when we’re 40 and I randomly find it after having forgotten about it for years.” You replied.
Jd laughed with a little shake of his head.
The evening went by much per normal, him climbing back out your window to head back to his own home, “I’ll see you at school,” he says as you shut your window behind him.
You let your body sit heavily on your bed, sighing. He had never been the most affectionate, you figured that was just the way he was. But lately he’s been even less affectionate. He’ll still let you be touchy with him, cuddling him and kissing on him but everything on his end has pretty much dissipated. Not even an arm around you as you walk together anymore. It felt like this big wedge was being driven through the middle of your relationship, and he -for some reason- wasn’t noticing it.
Another week or so passed, and the distance between you two had grew exponentially. You couldn’t entirely blame him, for you somewhat adopted this mindset of ‘if he wants to be distant, fine, I can be distant too.’
But it had gone on for too long now, and had gotten worse than you ever thought it could. You barely even talked at school, you just sort of sat together in this weird unresolved silence.
You had had enough. One evening you got yourself out of bed and marched yourself over to Jd’s house, not planning on leaving until you figured out what his deal was.
“Jd, I can’t do this anymore.” You wasted no time, immediately speaking as you crawled though his window, startling him.
“Y/N—”
“What are we doing?” You stood in front of him, arms crossed.
“What?”
“What are we doing? You and I. What is happening?”
His confusion was evident, his voice a mix of curiosity and bewilderment, “What are you talking about?”
“Jd, don’t be a dick. You're distant. We barely talk. You haven’t even held my hand in a month. I feel like I've lost you. Have I done something wrong?”
Jd's sigh carried a weight, his figure rising from the bed. “Y/N, I…” he hesitated, the words escaping him reluctantly, “My ex— she hung her herself in front of me. It haunts me. I just feel guilty and I'm terrified that I might drive you to the same point.”
The room fell into a stunned silence, your mind grappling with the enormity of his confession. Your mouth opened to speak, only managing to stutter incoherently. Before he could continue, you closed the gap between you, enfolding him in a heartfelt embrace. Silence enveloped the room, broken only by the sound of your steady breaths. “I had no idea,” you whispered softly, your voice carrying a mixture of sympathy and understanding “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine.” Jd choked out, unsure exactly of what the emotions his brain was trying to process were. You shook your head against him slightly, still holding him in a hug, “I can’t imagine how heavy that must feel.”
Jd winced, beginning to cry into your shoulder, tears starting to flow without reservation. That was the first time anyone has ever acknowledged how much pain he has experienced, ever. Your touch was a silent reassurance to him that he could let his guard down.
Amidst his quiet sobs, you murmured calmingly to him, “Shh, it's alright, Jd. You're not alone anymore. I'm here for you.” Your voice was a steady presence, comfort in a way he’d received from no one except his mom when he was a kid.
As his tears subsided, you held him a little tighter, your fingers tracing soothing circles on his back. “You don't have to be afraid with me,” you whispered, your words carrying the weight of your sincerity. “I'm not your ex, Jd. I just want to see you happy.”
His grip on you tightened, his vulnerability a testament to the trust he was beginning to place in you. He gave you a watery smile. “Thank you,” he managed to whisper, his voice raw, “you wanna just stay here tonight?” He asked. You nodded, getting comfortable in his bed.
A/N: LMFAO I’m so sorry this is SHIT but I had already left it sitting in my inbox so long and I didn’t wanna keep u waiting any longer. I kinda gave up with the end so sorry I hope it’s okay I tried to stick as closely as I could to the request 😭🫶🏼

AUGUST 2023 WRAP UP
[ loved liked okay no thanks DNF (reread) bookclub*]
Witch Week | A Perilous Undertaking | 2 AM At the Cat's Pajamas | The Last Sun | The Lives of Christopher Chant | The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo* | (The Angel of the Crows) | The Enchanted April | The Art of Prophecy | A Curious Beginning | Q's Legacy | The Grimoire of Grave Fates | Charmed Life | Ocean's Echo | (Band Sinister) | (Unfit to Print) | Camp Damascus | Wanted, A Gentleman | Translation State | The Mistress of Bhatia House
I’m late I’m late I’m late! Oops
It’s only a month late, right? ‘Only’ lol, work has been exhausting! Anyways:
At this point I wonder if Ann Leckie can ever do wrong, Translation State was good! I was completely enthralled, which is all I ask, even if I don’t get as passionate about it as the main trilogy.
I continued the KJ Charles reading, with these supposed stand alones that are also kind of related? Honestly it’s no less of a stretch than Society of Gentlemen to Lilywhite Boys, so I don’t know why she can’t officially list them together. Anyways, mostly fine, and Band Sinister is still a delight!
Camp Damascus…I’m thrilled for Chuck, really, and I think he’s a delight to follow, but this one wasn’t for me. Religious trauma is turning out to be a hard no.
Ocean’s Echo was good! In some ways I definitely thought it was better than Winter’s Orbit - miscommunication is the worst I’m sorry, this story was more consistently engaging! I just like the characters from WO a bit more.
Chrestomanci! I’ve been going by the suggested reading order on Goodreads, and while I wasn’t particularly enthused by Charmed Life, once I had a grasp on the world the other books have been fun! Im very sad this might be my last DWJ, as I seem to have exhausted my library’s collection of her audiobooks :(
Grimoire of Grave Fates had a really interesting premise that lured me in, despite my reservations - an anthology where all the stories work together to solve the mystery of a murder at a magic boarding school? I thought it worked fairly well (and could definitely spin itself out into a series of novels), but just ok for me. Maybe one day I’ll finally concede I can’t read YA or boarding school books anymore.
Q’s Legacy was the last (I think) of the 84 Charing Cross Road books, and honestly the worst. It had its interesting moments, but it lacked the cohesion of the other two, speed,-running the before and during of those stories, to then spend the second half on the adaptations. It was not at all what the descriptions led me to expect. Maybe worth a single read but not a revisit.
I will also be honest, I didn’t really like the first Veronica Speedwell! The plot felt a bit contrived, and Veronica was so blunt as to almost read as rude or mean. Also very unexpectedly…clinically horny? Does that make sense? I’m not quite sure what prompted me to continue, but I’m now several books in and enjoying it! To be blunt myself, the historic setting is just set dressing, the plots can feel contrived, the mysteries are mediocre, but the real draw is the Veronica and Stoker show once they get themselves settled in and comfortable with each other. It’s a hoot.
I’d heard good things about The Art of Prophecy, but I still didn’t know quite what to expect going in. It was wonderful. Maybe a little long, but if you’re looking for a fantastic fantasy with lots of fight sequences, no romance, and some fascinating characters, this is a great read. The sequel comes out soon and I can only hope it doesn’t take as long for my library to get the audiobook as it did for this one.
I don’t know where I first found An Enchanted April, but it’s been on my TBR for a little bit, and I thought it would be the perfect fit for my classics challenge I gave myself this year! It wasn’t what I expected at all - it’s entirely character driven and very focused on their flaws, and the entire first half I thought I was going to hate it. But the second half, there’s a twist, almost, born of some very naïve optimism that nonetheless works out. Very improbably, but I was happy for them, you funky little weirdos.
What can I say about The Angel of the Crows except that it is still very good! It’s maybe lost a little of the shine it held when I got obsessed with it for a few months last year, but it is definitely now one of my comfort books. I really ought to read more canon Holmes though lol.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was, to be fair, one of my suggestions for book club. It was OK, but there were definitely parts that really did not work for me, the frame narrative in particular. The other members of the club really liked it but I don’t have any plans to read more of the authors work.
I’m almost tempted to put The Last Sun last just so I can yell more. I’d heard such good things about this series, but turns out my expectations were a bit skewed - it is not historical or secondary fantasy world, oops. So we got off to a bit of a rough start, not to mention all of the Capital Words. Not usually a good sign. And while I still wouldn’t say I love the worldbuilding necessarily, or that these are the next great work of fantasy, the action is really great, and the characters are flipping fantastic. You’ve got a pair of 30 year olds who are bad ass fighters, have a traumatic past, are immature assholes, can be so so kind, and accidentally adopt a posse of troubled teenagers? Sign me up, I love them, this reminds me so much of my days reading tons of Teen Wolf fanfic AUs.
My history with 2 AM At the Cat's Pajamas is that they cannot stop recommending this thing on the Book Riot podcasts. When I found a copy at Goodwill, I thought surely it’s meant to be! Well. It was not bad, but it was not great. I don’t know. It just wasn’t for me and I will not be keeping my copy. I probably should have DNF’d it, but I continued in hope.
Only one actual DNF this month though, The Mistress of Bhatia House - the newest Perveen Mistri book. I was actually fairly excited for it despite my reservations about the earlier books, but I hit a mental roadblock with this one. There was some contrived feeling tension with her sister-in-law, but really, I realized that one of my main problems with this series is that, despite being in a very precarious social position, Perveen is just incredibly reckless - usually in the name of doing good! - but it just hit all the wrong nerves at the moment. I’m hoping there will be a better time to read this, but not right now.

My "Not a full thought" post about Emblems now being able to exist in Askr and the potential of timeline fuckery is coming back to haunt me.
Tumblr media
@iamdarkness BUT I really did wanna reply to this more in-depth esp to have context on the Engage side of things as well! And tbh it could be a really interesting thing to dig into, I just feel a bit out of my depth about it (the FEH autism does not extend far past Askr. If I'm entirely honest 🧍)
Hoping to clear the air on some things! Such as, Elyios (Engage) is separate from Askr/Zenith (FEH)! All the Emblems have their own "domains", in the form of a paralogue/map that's modeled after the respective Emblem's world. For story Emblems, you unlock these as you collect the rings, and for the DLC Emblems, that's how you recruit them. Unsure what this says about Elyios itself, if these maps are like. Pocket dimensions that are replicas of that Emblem's world or what. Given what I vaguely know about Emblem lore I'm gonna say replicas.
This is Askr's!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which, is interesting that it Is Askr, because it's Emblem Veronica's domain.
But honestly I feel like I'm getting ahead of myself, because even before the DLC came out, I was under the impression that Engage took place after all FEs were said and done, timeline wise. Given the nature of the Emblems, and the set up of the story starting off "1000 years ago" (and that was just to set up the story of Engage! So it has been A While).
One thing (that feels very loose canon-wise) that made me feel Engage is after FEH is because, not only are there Bond Rings of the Askr trio, but their weapons are here too! This was a promotional thing, but. It's There
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something worth noting, is that Bond Rings are different than Emblems. They don't have a spirit in them, that's as animated as the Emblems anyway... they give small stat bonuses, and are of characters that are related to any given Emblem (so, Corrin has a collection of Fates characters for Bond Rings, ect). This Does have an interesting result where there's an overlap between some DLC Emblems and Bond Rings. Cases being, there's Emblem Camilla and a Camilla Bond Ring that's connected to Emblem Corrin -- and, this happened to Edelgard/Dimitri/Claude too! Each of them having Bond Rings connected to Byleth, and also becoming their own Emblems in the Get Along Bracelet LMFAO (all three of them are in there. It goes about as well as you'd expect.)
But I am. Getting a little distracted.
EMBLEM VERONICA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One line that stands out to me is Alear (named Milo here) saying he hasn't heard of Askr before. But like if I think about that too much my head might explode and also Alear was previously comatose for 1000 slutty slutty years. So. Take it or leave it, whatever this is implying
Also, interestingly, she takes the form of her post Book 6 look -- but there's some odd inconsistencies, like her personality being more young Veronica, and also, mentions of Bruno as if he was still missing in action and not. Well. You know. (I'd have to dig further into Bond convos for examples, which tbh may be a worthwhile endeavor! But for now Take My Word For It Please this is already so all over the place 🥲)
But the main reason I wanted to emphasize that dialogue (aside from it being interesting, to say the least), is how Alear doesn't know about Askr as a whole. And, in Alear/Alfonse Forging Bonds:
Tumblr media
WHICH.... AGAIN.......... MADE ME FEEL LIKE. With everything going on in Engage, the Bond Rings of Alfonse/Sharena/Anna, their Respective Signature Weapons (feels particularly damning) and Emblem Veronica. It felt like, what happens in Elyios is something that has Yet to Happen. And that, Askr as we know it, has been long gone.
But then...... everything with the Katarina/Kris FBs............ how Kris was only able to be summonable because Katarina and Marth told their story............. and how it's just the Emblems that are specifically mentioned as Not Having Info on, not Alear herself or her friends. My head hurds so bad.
LIKE...... I GUESS???? My initial thoughts on "Oh yeah that makes sense the Emblems don't exist in Askr" was that they Didn't Exist Yet. Aughh but then ...... in-universe, wouldn't the same be true for. Anyone from "the future". Or does it just apply to ghostly jewelry apparitions. Because we KNOW that option isn't true, it's shown/stated that Kiran comes from a modern world like ours, and there's also the Tokyo Mirage Sessions idols. Maybe the Emblem thing WAS just a Kris case, but that feels SO ODD. Like the Emblems are intrinsic to Elyios it seems. Why wouldn't the Askr library, chock full of information about the various worlds and lives of Heroes, Not Have That Info??? Especially with royalty like Lumera (Alear's mom) having close ties with specific Emblems (Sigurd). And also off the top my head that's a REOCCURRING thing, that the royal families in Engage Are entrusted with specific Emblems that are passed down/protected across generations. Celica with Céline/Firene, Lyn with Alcryst/Brodia, to name a few. It just seems SO strange, because it Feels Like it would be basic information about the world of Elyios.
CONCLUSION?????
My head hurds so bad. Net zero information. I'm so sorry. I hope this helped!!!!!!!!! 😇🫡

Okay do you agree with me that we were severely deprived of Ezor, Zethrid, Axca, and Veronica content? Because they would be the ultimate lesbian squad like
Do not even. Get. Me. Started.
Too late.
(warning: this is a loooooong post.)
My poor girls, they were so perfect! And don't forget Narti (blind lizard gal) because as much as I think Lotor's whole villain arc thingy was dumb, I will NEVER forgive him for killing her. Never ever ever.
I do refer to them as Lotor and the Lesbians in my head, so I think it's pretty clear what I think about them. (Small note: If they were a band that would be their name.)
And Veronica! She was so cool! You know she steals all the girls her brothers bring home. Like, 'Oh you met someone cool at work? I'm just gonna take her off your hands...' Let's be real, if Veronica was not a fictional character, she would be a notorious lady charmer.
And COME ON. Ezor and Zethrid were LITERALLY DATING. I will take NO ARGUEMENTS. Do we not remember that whole episode where Zethrid went berserk on the paladins cuz she thought Ezor was dead?? And how they looked lovingly into each other's eyes? They had an END SCENE together! Well, it wasn't about them, it was that thing about Keith taking over command of the blade but WHAT-EVER. They were 2 feet away from each other because they were inseparable and in. love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
look at them.
Wait I can do better:
Tumblr media
I'm gonna scream.
And, yeah, they were technically canon but this doesn't count. If Shiro and the dude he married (..Curtis?) get a canon kiss then so do Ezor and Zethrid.
Tumblr media
Before I start my little spiel and Veronica and Acxa, I'm just gonna leave a picture of Narti here for those of you who don't remember her.
She was the one without eyes who could see through the eyes of her cat (honestly so real in a fictional way, love that for her).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ringing any bells? Yeah, I cried when she died. (I made a rhyme!)
NOW.
Veronica and Acxa. They would have been SO CUTE together. And even if they didn't get together, at the very least they should have been best friends. Like the kind of best friends where Acxa is adopted into the McClain family to the point at which she can always be found there just chilling in their house like she owns the place. The kind of best friends that finish each other's sentences and know EVERYTHING about each other. GUYS. This was the VISION.
And you know what? I gonna put a picture of them here in just a sec, but you ALL know what I'm talking about when I say that they had a klance-style bonding moment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do not even try to tell me that they did not have potential. They're making awkward love eyes at each other.
(Also, the limited fanart that exists of them is SO. CUTE.)
Honestly, if the show really wanted to show representation that bad, then why couldn't these ships be real? Adam is great and all that, but if we're going to introduce a queer relationship in the name of representation, then maybe don't kill him off for the sake of drama after only about 5 minutes total screentime.
In fact, Shiro's whole thing was messed up. Yes, I get that he's a queer icon, but why are these things being forced on him? Instead of putting him with another character that also only got 5 minutes of screentime, maybe his end scene could be something like, 'Shiro went and finally got the therapy he deserved' or 'Shiro and Keith spent quality time together now that they were no longer separated' or even, 'Shiro retired from military business and built a comfortable life for himself as a coffee shop owner.'
He. Does. Not. Need. No. Man.
Based on the fact that he still has that Garrison-issued arm, he is still in relations with them in some way. And maybe he quit and just got to keep the arm, but that needed to be specified. Are we forgetting his previous trauma? His periodic flashbacks? The fact that his body was taken over by alien life and used to INJURE HIS YOUNGER BROTHER? The very same brother that he was a role model to?
And maybe we could have kicked Lance's scene out and instead shown him with his family? That would have been a great place to insert Veronica and show them actually bonding like family. Did anyone else find it weird that we got basically no scenes of them interacting in space? With their personalities, they should have been gossiping and having spa days left and right, but there was nothing of the sort.
Wait, I'm sorry, I got off topic.
Where was I? Oh yeah.
The most talked about example of queerbaiting is always Klance because as main characters, they're in the spotlight, but these closeted lesbians do in fact exist.
Why did we get Allurance but not Ezor and Zethrid? They were SO CLEARLY compatible and they weren't toxic to each other like Allura and Lance. My main argument against that ship is because of Klance, it's because Allura had just lost someone important and rebounded to Lance, and Lance constantly tried to be the rock for her that she wasn't ready to lean on. He finally had what he wanted from day 1, and realized that if he really wanted it to continue, he would have to change in ways he wasn't ready for.
If that kind of relationship gets a kiss, then Ezor and Zethrid should get one too. They spent their whole time on the show supporting and relying on each other.

I was reading your Firkle headcanons with the part where he is a real life JD from heathers. But I thought, an AU where Michael is the real life JD (musical version). The reason? Similar trench coat, Yandere tendencies, similar haircut, trauma, daddy issues, hates society, would kill for his s/o (at least in me and my friend’s headcanon). And the reader is Michael’s Veronica.
DID I HEAR SOMEONE SAY SONG FIC??
Oh, no? Oh well, that’s what you’re getting.
It’s not necessarily to the point where he’s k/lling for his s/o yet, but with patience and more Heathers based fics, we’ll get to that point really soon ;)
I LOVE any opportunity I get to write Heathers related fics, so enjoy this song fic, using “Fight for Me” from the Heathers Musical
I hope you like it.
Warnings: fighting, random pauses, song lyrics
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You had just come to the lunchroom, your bookbag still resting on your back, a small grumble on your face. You were just in the middle of a very important test when the shrill bell sounded, signaling it was time for lunch. As you scanned the lunch room, your eyes settled on your table, except, it was occupied by a single student. A student you had only caught glimpses of, who had just transferred schools. You couldn't quite remember his name, only that it started with a M, and picked your brain trying to figure it out. 'Mason? Matthew? Mitchell?' The names ran through your mind.
While you stood in your thoughts, you felt a small bump to your back, looking over your shoulder to see (B/F/N). She smiled at you, looking to where your glance previously was. "Michael's a cutie, huh? He's got that whole goth/bad boy thing going on, he's so hot." she gushed, causing you to roll your eyes. 'Michael...' You thought as you looked over the him again, biting your lip. You hadn't even noticed that the school's bully, Token, was making his way to the boy. He had a smug smirk on his face, reaching infront of Michael and smacking the book he was writing in out of his hands. The new kid looked up, and annoyed look on his face. You wanted to step in, but then you caught sight of Token's friend, Clyde, who was coming to the other side of Michael. Few words were exchanged, and it ended with Clyde grabbing hold of Michael's wrists in order to give Token an easy hit. Except, the transfer student broke free, easily throwing a punch to Token and turning in time to kick Clyde where the sun didn't shine.
You pouted, but everyone around you rose up, running to the scene. And like in some cheesy romantic/psycho musical, the students all sang a charming 'HOLY SHIT' as the world seemed to slow around you. You sighed, crossing your arms and striding to the 3 boys, who were stuck in fighting stances. Michael was swinging a sharp left hook at Clyde, who was in the process of bending over, and Token was about to hit the ground, but the scene stayed perfectly frozen in time, like someone hit pause on real life. Looking to Michael, your heart fluttered before you opened your mouth to start singing.
"Why when you see boys fight
Does it look so horrible
Yet... feel so right?"
I shouldn't watch this crap
That’s not who I am
You stepped closer to the flesh statues, looking closer into the face of Michael. His thick, black brows were furrowed with anger, but something about it stirred something inside of you. You looked dreamily to him.
But with this kid…
Daaaaamn...
You walked behind his back, studying his form. Beautiful features, hair that looked soft to the touch. You reached up, carding your fingers carefully through his thick, raven curls and rubbing your fingers down his cheek. They looked as if they were sculpted by Michaelangelo himself. You sang to his still face, the corners of your lips turning up.
Hey, mister no-name kid
So who might you be?
And could you fight for me
Hey, could you face the crowd
Could you be seen with me and still act proud
You couldn't help but think to how he isolated himself, acting as if he was too cool to be with anyone. You ran your fingers from his cheek, down his arm, to his slightly open palm. Pressing your fingers between his, feeling the cool metal of his ring, it sparked something deep inside of you. An unfamiliar want, something you've never experienced before.
Hey, could you hold my hand
And could you carry me through no man's land
It's fine if you don't agree
But I would fight for you
If you would fight for me
You wished you could keep the want away, and you reluctantly pulled your hand from his. You knew you'd get so much shit just for having a crush on him. He was new, different. Not like the football players and preppy kids that you hung out with. Regardless, a part of you screamed that you didn't care. You could care less about what happened, you just wanted to quench this new obsession with him.
Let them drive us underground
I don't care how far
You can set my broken bones and I know CPR
Suddenly, the world resumed, but in extreme slow motion. Michael's fist collided with Clyde's jaw, sending the boy back a couple of feet. Token began standing behind him, charging at him. The new kid turned to him, moving out of the way, causing Token to miss. Before the bully could get to far, Michael grabbed his arm, drawing him back. The world paused once more, and you got excited for once during this scuffle. Nobody had ever been able to take out Token or Clyde by themselves, but he was doing it so easily on the first try.
Well, whoa, you can punch real good
You've lasted longer than I thought you would
So hey, mister no-name kid
You made your way back to your friend's side, her body poised in a cheering position. You just started fondly at the scene as it began to play again, starting in slow motion and speeding to real time slowly.
If some night you're free
Wanna fight for me?
If you're still alive
I would fight for you
If you would fight for me
Michael grabbed Token by the head, rearing his own head back and headbutting him, causing the boy to fall back. The crowds' slow, distorted voices quickly pitched back to normal, chants of that one phrase repeating, raising in crescendo until they abruptly stopped.
Holy shit
Holy shit
Holy shit
Holy SHIT!
The boy fixed himself, grabbing his book from the floor and walking away from the two boys who layed injured and groaning on the ground. He came to your direction, his eyes catching yours and holding their gaze for what seemed like an eternity, before he squeezed past you, his hand brushing lightly against yours. You turned to stare at him as he left, bringing the hand he touched to your chest. You knew the only way to satisfy this want was to get him, and getting him is exactly what you're going to do.
Don’t mean to across slut shame-y in anyway possible but I can’t help but think how different they have Marisol dressed (I mean, it’s hard not to notice the cleavage) as compared to other women on this show, particularly love interests. I don’t know what the reason is but I do know costume and wardrobe play a part in media so it does feel like it was done for a very pointed reason. My guess would be to make Eddie appear in a very specific light and in contrast to Buck.
i’ll be honest i was not going to answer this and then i read the whole thing and i kinda agree. it’s very unlike the show to dress female love interests in such a way, and the last time i can remember a similar thing is taylor in the red dress when buck was literally using her as a prop against veronica and albert (and the only reason it’s on top of my recall memory is because megan west just looked drop dead gorgeous in that episode lmao).
but like i can see this from two possible perspectives that kind of relate to one another:
1. the buck pov and buddie of it all, if we’re still in bucks eyes it could be a very deliberate tool to say that buck is very hyper aware that his best friend eddie is here and on a date with a WOMAN. and that he can’t be into his friend eddie because he’s with a WOMAN.
2. the metatextual anti-buddie of it all. that same sentiment could possibly be applied to the show creators trying to send their viewers a message like heyyyy eddie is dating a woman! did you forget he likes GIRLS! well now you didn’t!
or they just thought the shirt was nice, that’s always an option i guess.
alright another day another preview lets go. this one is for chapter 2 of my fic "don’t stop looking in my eyes (your eyes)" on ao3 (my ao3 is ghostandroid). in summary, its just an au where gwen and miles play veronica and jd in heathers the musical and its gonna be silly.
chapter 1 didn't have much ghostflower, but they will have their moment in chapter 2. anyways, preview under cut
“I'm not exactly used to all the attention being on me.” She explained. In a band, she only had to play drums. In ballet, she was always with a group. Gwen went solo through life, but could never go solo on stage.
“Yeah, I can relate to that. I had that same feeling when I was your age.”
“And you got over that?” Gwen asked. “Yes, I did.” Kira responded. “First step to get over it: get to know yourself better. Know your weak and strong points and improve those.” Gwen wasn’t a huge fan of this step. She hated talking or thinking about herself like this. “I can tell you're not excited about this.”
“I’ve always been like that.”
“That's alright, I know how that feels.” As much as Gwen hated talks like this, she was glad she could have one. She never got talks like this, her dad always being too busy and she usually kept everything to herself. “I feel like your weak points are that you don't think about stuff like this enough and you keep doubting yourself,” Is it bad that she is really accurate, Gwen thought to herself
“but one of your stronger points is that you know what you wanna do and you wanna do everything to achieve that.” Gwen just nodded, conforming that what her director was saying is true. “And here comes another weak point; you don't have enough confidence to go through with what you wanna do.”
“How are you this accurate?”
“Like I said, I’ve been in your shoes before.” Gwen thought it was nice to have someone who could relate to her. If Kira got over this, so could she, right? “What makes you less confident is other people's opinions. My advice to you is that you should just think about yourself, not other people.”
“I don't know if I can do that, I mean-”
“Gwen, stop doubting yourself so much. The Gwen I saw audition for this musical seemed so confident on stage. I wanna see that confidence on opening night and the shows after that.”
“But people I know will be there. That’s why I'm so nervous. My friends will be watching and I know some of the people in the cast from classes. I just don't know if I can perform in front of people I know.”
And it won't feel the same if my dead best friend isn't in the audience, but Gwen didn’t voice this out loud. How in two years, all her confidence and love for being on stage disappeared. “Gwen, focus on yourself. The self-doubt you have doesn't define you. You're an amazing singer, I’ve seen it. Learn to be confident, or else you won’t achieve what you want. If there's anything I’ve learned from my time in theater, don’t give a fuck about what others think.”
Gwen felt a little better. She would obviously not instantly have the confidence to perform by tomorrow, but she was willing to work on it. “I'll try.” Gwen said, smiling softly. “That's what I wanna hear. Now, next rehearsal, I wanna see you sing like you did at the audition. And if it doesn't work, just try again, and again, and again until you've done it.”
“Thanks for the advice. Where did you learn this from?”
“My dad.”
Gwen felt a bit upset. Her dad was never there for her. As a kid, she thought she wasn’t good enough for him. As she got older, she realized he just chose work over her. It hurt, but after a while Gwen got used to it.
“My dad is always too busy for me. I don't even know if he's gonna show up on opening night. I've performed before, only playing drums and ballet, but I can’t even remember the last time he went to one of my shows. Maybe he never even came to a show.” Gwen looked back at her director, the expression on her face showed worry and sadness. “I'm sorry, I didn't mean to vent.”
“No, it’s fine.” Kira paused for a moment before speaking again. “I just hope that maybe he can make an exception this one time. After all, you did get the lead and I know this will be a show worth watching.” Gwen felt her confidence go up more. “Now, I should probably let you go. But please, start working on your confidence more and don’t let your self-doubt define you.”
“I will, thank you so much for this. I really needed it.” Gwen thanked her director, walking towards the door. “You're welcome.”
---
btw, kira is my spidersona who i just threw in here bc i thought it would be fun (also she is actually a theater kid and i reflect onto her too much). changes will probably be made in the final version (bc that always happens) but this is a small part of the chapter.
also fun fact, i actually got this advice from my dad. he is still trying to convince me to try and do a solo but like gwen in this fic, im too nervous to do so (i need to stop reflecting so much onto this girl i dont think its healthy).
Had a lore question about Wesker I was hoping you could answer,
Like how does the T virus or whatever childhood virus he got from experimentation work as virus resistance? Is he immune like Jake to C? If he somehow got bit by a T virus or T variant infected, would the version he have neutralize it or would mutate?
Idk I’ve been looking at a lot of “what T virus gave Wesker superpowers” discussion and it’s interesting seeing pre and post re5 retcon discussion.
Ahhh, I do remember the pre-RE5 days, when we all thought his pal Birkin had given Wesker some special unique virus that gave him all the superpowers with none of the brain-melting.
If I recall correctly, current lore is that what Wesker was given was a version of the Progenitor virus, which is the precursor they made all other T family viruses out of. So presumably, because he's been exposed to that so much, he has built up antibodies to any closely related viruses. Antibodies can be passed along to your children, so that's the reason Jake has the C virus immunity (lore says C virus was based on T-Veronica, so it's in the same family).
The final selection virus that Wesker took before dying was also progenitor-based I think? Obviously, that one did do some mutating, because Wesker has snake eyes and superpowers now. I have my own theories on how that worked out, but canon lore doesn't give any details.
The T viruses canonically react differently based on someone's genetics--for example, only like 1% of the population have the genes to turn into Tyrants instead of zombies. Basically on top of having progenitor antibodies, Wesker's a very lucky bastard who mostly got beneficial mutations.
Then there's Uroboros, which was made by cobbling together a bunch of different T variants that Wesker stole from everyone else plus a dose of Jill's T antibodies. We all know what happened when Wesker infected himself with that! (Tentacles. So, so many tentacles.)
So I think the answer is, if he got bitten by a garden variety zombie it wouldn't do much to him. His immune system has got plenty of experience fighting T virus already. However, there's a chance that if he was exposed to a different enough variant, it would still affect him. And since T Virus is a science fantasy 'turn you into monster' virus instead of your usual 'just makes you sick' virus, all sorts of fun mutations could happen from that.
My Review of Pokemon: Aim to be a Pokemon Master
Tumblr media
Previous Pokemon Reviews Here:
Pokemon: Indigo League/Orange Islands/Johto
Pokemon: Journeys
This is it. The big one!
This might be my shortest Pokemon review ever or my longest-short review. Whatever!
Tumblr media
When we saw that Ash beat Leon and became the strongest trainer in the world, what do you think we were going to get afterward? He’s the top trainer in the world. He beat the likes of Steven Stone, Cynthia, and Leon. There’s nothing above this since it seems that Red doesn’t exist in this universe. But still getting the news about this truly being the end of Ash and Pikachu’s journey really took a toll on everyone.
I spent days after the announcement looking at all of the thoughts from people all over the globe. There was excitement for the new protagonists. There was sadness for those attached to Ash and Pikachu. There was gloating from people who were waiting for this moment. My opinion on this was all over the place. I was excited, sad, nervous, and absolutely ship-wrecked all rolled into one. That last emotion is understandable as there’s a very glaring chance that after these final eleven episodes, I will never see Tracey Sketchit again. EVER! And not just him, but everyone else that made a dent in Ash’s journey. Even my mother got sad when I told her they were ending Ash’s adventure and wondered how they were going to do it. Keep in mind, my mother is in her 70s and has only watched a handful of episodes (mostly Wooper related).
But the reactions that really kicked me in the feels came from Ash’s former and present English voice actresses, Veronica Taylor and Sarah Natochenney. Regardless of your opinions on which Ash was superior, these ladies both had a hand in Ash’s journey in the English version. Sarah especially since she not only grew up watching the show, but joined the cast when she was like 18 or 19 and has been voicing him ever since. Lisa Ortiz also should get a nod here because she’s the official voice director for Pokemon and has been with the show from literally day one. Seeing their reactions to the news was such a feeling.
Tumblr media
There have been many opportunities to retire Ash and Pikachu. I thought it was going to be over after Kanto. I even had several dreams where either Ash, Misty, or Brock died…and for some reason Gary became a Klan member with a drinking problem. My 13-year-old mind was certainly an enigma. Thankfully, it was not the end. It could have been over at the end of Johto when Ash split from Misty and Brock. But it wasn’t over then either. Things could have ended when Brock left for good after Sinnoh. Could have saved us a lot of lull and nothingness of Black and White. But it wasn’t over then either. We in fact got some of the best moments of Ash’s path to becoming a Pokemon Master. Ash was able to go further in a pokemon league when facing of against Alain. He surpassed that when entering the Alolan League by becoming the champ. And finally, world champion.
So…does this new title make Ash a Pokemon Master?
I really hope so. If Pokemon has the ambitions to end Ash and Pikachu’s career in 11 episodes, they better do it tactfully and satisfies everyone. Obviously, satisfying everybody is never going to happen. I will of course find fault with everything. If you recall my thoughts in the 20th movie I Choose You, I said that the perfect ending for Pokemon would involve a fight against Ho-oh, Pikachu speaking, and Ash possibly dying. That movie already did all of that and that came out a good 5 years before this whole thing. With all of that said, let’s hit it!
Tumblr media
RETURNING FRIENDS: Just as the promotional poster advertised, this will mostly contain the original trio, Ash, Misty, and Brock. Misty joining Ash for a while kinda brings back a lot of memories. In the second episode, we witnessed an old-fashion battle between the two. In fact, this episode was eerily similar to an episode from the Johto arc where the two fought over who was going to keep Totodile, except it’s with a Clauncher. As for Brock, he’s spotted by them, they save him from illusions, and he hangs out with the two for a while.
Tumblr media
It's just these two traveling with Ash. Oh sure, Cilan ran into them. And kudos for getting both Mamrou Miyano and Jason Griffith back to voice Dento-fruit! But that was just for one episode. Best wishes to you and be on your way. And…nope, I’m saving that for later.
So, if you were expecting May, Dawn, or Serena to return, they do not. If you were expecting a nod to Clemont because Cilan knew him too, it doesn’t happen. If you were expecting another trip to the Alolan region where Misty and Brock meet Ash’s adopted Alolan family again, nope! If you were expecting an update on Goh and Chloe, sit and spin.
Tumblr media
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, JAMES: There really aren’t that many people left that have been with Pokemon from episode 1. James Carter Cathcart was one of those lucky individuals. If the name seems unfamiliar to you, he’s gone by several aliases over the years including Billy Beach, Carter Cathcart, and Jimmy Zoppi. That last one is the one I always called him by. This guy has been around since episode 1 voicing Gary Oak and a myriad of other voices in just about every season. He was Todd during Kanto, he was Pryce during Johto, Mr. Briney during Hoenn, and that ass-wipe mayor from the Orange Islands. Dude plays a corrupt politician really well. My kudos there! Outside of Pokemon, remember that bug-freak from Yu-Gi-Oh that did the thing everyone hates him for? That was him. He played Weevil! But most youngins know him as the current voice of James, Meowth, and Professor Oak. I know I was never a fan of Cathcart’s voice for any one of those characters and was very vocal about that. But this guy stuck with it for the last 16 years and that’s very commendable. Not to mention his work with scripts and ADR for Pokemon for many years. So why bring this up now?
At the beginning of 2023, Cathcart was diagnosed with an advanced case of Throat Cancer. Any cancer diagnosis is frightening, but he seemed to stick with his work schedule with voicing and working on scripts. That was until the cancer didn’t react to the treatment like intended. As of April 2023, James Carter Cathcart had retired from voice acting and ADR/Script work. In the Pokemon English dub community, that’s a biggie. This guy has been there since day one. He has been in every season and after season 8, every episode. I don’t want to say he’s the Unshou Ishizuka here, but both did play Professor Oak and voiced many voices throughout the years. Despite the many critical things I’ve said throughout the years, there are two roles I’ve enjoyed from him the most. First is Miki from Revolutionary Girl Utena. And the other is Gary Oak. I loved him as both and it’s great that he comes into reprise Gary when it calls for it and that he continued to voice Gary even after the big voice change.
Thank you for your years of service.
WITH. THAT. SAID. The final eleven episodes will showcase the new voices of James, Meowth, Professor Oak, and Gary Oak. And no, they aren’t voiced by Eric Stuart, Maddie Blaustein, or Stuart Zagnit. Stuart burned those bridges down long ago and Blaustein’s been dead for over 15 years now. Not sure what Zagnit is doing now as I think the last time he voiced for Pokemon was during Black & White. Okay, here’s the new people!
*James is now voiced by Edward Bosco (known for Udon on Boruto)
*Meowth & Prof. Oak are now voiced by Mick Wingert (known for Po on Kung-Fu Panda [TV], Lovecraft on Bungo Stray Dogs, and Matsuyo on Mr. Osomatsu)
[this has gotta be like the seventh fucking voice for Professor Oak, I kid you not]
*Gary is now voiced by SungWon Cho (known for Hyoudou on Aggretsuko)
Tumblr media
RETURNING POKEMON: It’s been a long time coming. Ash is shuffling around his pokemon in each episode of this final season. We’re seeing pokemon from other generations mingling with other pokemon. It’s just so special! On top of that, we saw two of Ash’s former pokemon like Squirtle and Lapras as both got their very own episode. It’s always special to see Squirtle not only with its squad, but with it’s best buds Charizard and Bulbasaur. Was their last reunion back in AG? Has it been that long?! And as for Lapras, it’s still with it’s family surfing around the world. I just wish the episode it was in didn’t annoy me.
Yeah, fillers still exist here.
Tumblr media
THE STORIES: And this is where I begin sighing. These stories really should be showcased in past seasons. Ash and gang help a stuck Wailmer. Ash and gang help a Beartic control its ice type attack. Brock is caught in a slump because the girl he likes has a boyfriend. The episodes here are very formulaic in terms of Ash and friends get in a jam with a pokemon of the day, get in it with Team Rocket, do the task. And some of these episodes feel like a re-hash of past episodes. I guess it's because Ash is traveling with Misty and Brock again, they want people to get some nostalgia before the end happens. Now, there is one episode that was my fav…TRACEY!
Yeah, I know, besides that! I’ll get to my crazy ramblings soon enough.
Tumblr media
Hands down, the best of the 11 was Getting to the Heart of it All. This episode was where Ash and Gengar help a Banette. That one will kick you in the feels, but will make you smile because there’s a happy ending. And we all love a happy ending!
Tumblr media
MUSIC: Oh, the original music is really making me feel nostalgic. All of the background music from season one and thensome returns in a big way and featured in most episodes. Even a few surprising music tracks like in episode 10 where we got the music from the fifth movie. Big surprise there! When it came to the opening, we are once again blessed to hear Rica Matsumoto sing a version of Mezase Pokemon Master. Normally, I will tire of the same song being played again, but this song is a classic. It’s up there with Sailor Moon and Hunter x Hunter. Those openings are classics. The ending themes were mostly the very first ending theme, Hyakugojuuichi by Unshou Ishizuka. But there have been a couple of episodes that featured other past ending themes including one of the Team Rocket endings, Takeshi’s Paradise, and Lapras ni Notte. That last one, you know what that means!
Tumblr media
Medea spends a minute and thirty seconds screaming, “THERE’S TRACEY! THERE’S TRACEY”!
Damn skippy, I did!
Did the U.S…I don’t even need to finish this question. You all know the answer. Generic ending theme. I think it was copy and pasted from Journeys. The opening followed the same footsteps as the original by giving us another version to Gotta Catch em All. Both opening themes gave us nostalgia from the past.
ENGLISH OPENING CUT OUT THAT CROPPED TRACEY PICTURE! YOU ARE DEAD TO ME, ENGLISH VERSION!
Okay, let me get through this portion before I go back to outbursting again. As for other musical aspects, did they keep the background music? Some, not all. But some! I know that the U.S. version was never going to play Mezase Pokemon Master, Hyakugojuuichi or anything else Japanese. But what could have been awesome was if they could play some of the old Pikachu Jukebox hits. It was never going to happen, but it’s a nice thought. The last time they even played one of those was during DP and they slipped in that classic Team Rocket song.
BANNED IN THE U.S.A.: Ah, welcome back annoying friend. I think I forgot to speak about the passed-over episodes from Journeys when I reviewed earlier this year. But the U.S. never airs the clip-show episodes, so it’s not really banned. Editing out Brock’s maracas when he’s about to go into his Takeshi’s Paradise song, that’s something to discuss.
Tumblr media
For the love of chicken noodle soup, what are you doing? Really?! Maracas had to be edited out like they’re fucking riceballs?! Has any group ever found fault with Brock shaking maracas?! There was a Family Guy cutaway where Peter is shaking maracas while thinking about murdering children. That’s an eyebrow raise, NOT BROCK SINGING WHILE SHAKING HIS MARACAS!
Okay, I’m done beating this dead horse.
Tumblr media
TEAM ROCKET’S END: With the end of Ash and Pikachu’s adventure, this meant the inevitable end to Team Rocket tailing the twerp and their schemes to steal Pikachu. But how?! Jessie, James, and Meowth have been together through it all. Granted, there were several episodes where they would go their separate way. But they would always patch things up by the end of the episode. There were two Team Rocket centered episodes in this arc. One of them was totally like that Orange Island episode Pokemon Double Trouble. Don’t even get me started on that! But the other had Jessie and James reunited with all of their pokemon from the past. I mean, not all of them. At least they remembered Weezing, Arbok, Victrebel, Lickitung, Dustox, Mimikyu, and Maerine.
Team Rocket decided to come up with a convoluted plan involving all of their pokemon to separate the twerps and steal Pikachu once and for all. But when their plan ended up in failure thanks to Pikachu and a wild Latias of all things, Team Rocket just called it quits. The three went their separate ways and that was it.
Tumblr media
While it felt very rushed and was put at the end of an episode instead of the beginning like most Team Rocket split-up episodes, I feel like this isn’t over. I know it doesn’t look good on paper. Team Rocket has lost to the twerp more times than one can count and that includes with borrowed pokemon from the boss. Maybe they felt defeated when they realized that they couldn’t beat them even with all of their pokemon. Or maybe it was an overwhelming feeling after getting their ass kicked by a legendary pokemon out of nowhere.
Tumblr media
THE LATIAS ARC: Throughout 10 of these episodes, we would see Latias in some form. I wrote off Ash and Latias back at the fifth movie. Ash will never catch a Latias. He will not get together with Latias from Alto Mare. He will not fly around Hoenn on the back of a Latias or mega-evolve one like the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire games. Fool didn’t even mega evolve Charizard or Glalie and I swear that’s the last time I’ll scream about that. So on and so forth! In the first episode of this arc, Ash saves a Latias after it was injured. I honestly thought nothing of it. But after the events of that episode, every episode in this arc showed Latias in invisible mode observing Ash. So, I’m wondering if Ash is going to do something for Latias near the end of this series. Catching it is so out of the question though. In some instances, Latias even saves Ash and Pikachu.
And seriously, Misty and Brock don’t even question Ash flying through the air with ease and unhurt. The fuck, guys! He’s not riding around on Wonder Woman’s invisible ride.
Tumblr media
Latias confides in Ash, Misty, and Brock to help a Latios who has been hunted by a poacher. This poacher is giving off every kind of vibe that Hunter J had. In answer to everyone’s question here, there is no mention of Hunter J despite having technology that stones pokemon in their place. Hunter J’s death will remain up in the air…with her scattered ashes. Ash was able to stop this hunter with aid from Latias and Latios. Officer Jenny conveniently shows up after all is said and done. But after that, Latios and Latias fly away…to Alto Mare?
Tumblr media
OH MY GOODNESS, LOOK AT THIS GUYS! THE FIFTH MOVIE IS CANON TO THE POKEMON ANIME! Bianca and Latias from the fifth movie get a cameo. Of all the movies I’ve wanted to be canon to the anime…I mean besides the second and third movie, I’m glad it’s the fifth one. There, we survived 10 episodes of Latias stalking Ash. He didn’t catch it. See, told you it wouldn’t happen.
Medea was secretly hoping he’d catch it though.
THE FINALE: Those eleven episodes seemed to piss on by, huh?! Japan has prepared its fans that the end of Ash and Pikachu’s tale was near. Tribute videos were out on social media. Notifications were all around Tokyo. And a panoramic video in Shinjuku station shows Ash’s greatest moments. Meanwhile in America, Sarah Natochenney is getting melancholy as her time as Ash could be coming to a close. Netflix America is slow as fuck getting these fucking episodes out while Canada and even South Fucking Africa aired these long before America.
Medea was sleep deprived due to a night meeting at work, but still woke her black ass up at 2:45am to see if Tracey was going to show up.
Don’t I always?
Tumblr media
The final episode begins with the splitting up of the OG group. Misty goes back to Cerulean and Brock goes back to Pewter. Ash and Pikachu go back to Pallet Town for a nice soak in the tub and rest. The next day, Ash returns to Professor Oak’s lab…
Nope. Stopping this right there! I’m not getting my hopes up with your stupid bait-and-switch. You’ve been dangling this fucking carrot in front of my face for the last 23 years. Oh, maybe if there’s an episode at Oak’s lab, I might see Tracey. What have I been getting since the end of Advanced Generation? Nothing! Pbbt! Zilch! Go fuck yourself with your Oak lab episode. I ain’t falling for this shit. Go on, break my heart like you always do and let’s finish this anime on some kind of note.
gasp
Tumblr media
I…can’t…he’s speaking. His voice, I can actually hear it. There’s actual lip movement. WE HAVE LIP MOVEMENT, PEOPLE! And his Marill. Ohmygersh, his cute little blue boy! Tomokazu Seki is actually voicing Tracey for one possible last time. And he even shows up twice in the same episode. And GASP! HIS VENONAT EVOLVED! OOOOOOH, and Scyther is still alive. This is ecstasy!
YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Tumblr media
A MOMENT LIKE THIS! I’VE WAITED SIXTEEN AND A HALF YEARS FOR A MOMENT LIKE THIS! FOR HIM TO SPEAK AGAIN! OHHHHH I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S HAPPENING TO MEEEEEEE!
I’m crying. I’m really crying. These are tears of joy dammit! You like him, you really, really like him. OH MY GOD, THANK YOU ANIPOKE! I wanna, I wanna thank everyone in the Pokemon anime. Behind the scenes and otherwise. I want to thank Tomokazu Seki for taking time out of his busy Gilgamesh schedule to voice Tracey again. You truly are the greatest seiyuu in the universe.
Tumblr media
Hey, I waited 16 and a half years to hear my boy speak again. I am gonna rub it in the haters faces. And when I rub it in haters faces, I smother it in their face. I’m sure the ONLY reason we’re hearing this is because the game Pokemon Masters EX casted Tomokazu Seki to voice the creepy Ball Guy around that time. And I’m sure he was enticed to voice Tracey Sketchit again. Like, since you’re already here…Whatever the case, I am happy. I am ecstatic. I am elated. I am pretty sure I woke up the dead when I screamed at three in the morning. No, seriously. I was all ready to write off this final episode as the day Pokemon screwed Medea out of seeing Tracey for the billionth time. But when I got the message from one of my girlfriends saying she was happy for me during the broadcast. I knew something was coming and that I was going to be very, very happy. I was.
This episode gets a perfected 10/10, you gave me life and a perfect way to cap off the series. The only way this moment could get better is if Donald Trump gets arrested.
six days after this broadcast, he was
Holy fuck, that’s two-for-two. The only way this moment could get any better would be if they could get Ted Lewis to voice Tracey.
Tumblr media
HE TOTALLY DID! Craig Blair no longer voices Tracey and this pleases me. No disrespect here. It's just Ted Lewis is the G.O.A.T.
I’m on a roll. Better start asking for more shit. Okay, I wish for more Yuri on Ice content. Um…those last two episodes of Empire to be filmed. A legitimate streaming service to air Boston Public. Video footage of the Spongebob cast voicing the episode “Sailor Mouth”. A bottle of Ting. Animated movies getting respect from the Academy. My student loans paid off. An all-expenses paid trip to Italy…
Excuse me Medea, you still have to talk about the final episode.
Tumblr media
Oh. Ash goes to Oak’s lab. Tracey is shown and the world is great again. He leaves for a couple of days and has Ash take over in his place. Quickly finds a missing Charmander. Gary helps Ash out. Gary then finally brings up the burning question of what comes next now that Ash is a World Champion? This kinda left Ash wondering for a good chunk of this episode. It really impacted him to the point where his mom gives him new shoes for a new journey and he hasn’t put them on at all. Meanwhile, Jessie, James, and Meowth are working the slop kitchen at TR headquarters.
Tumblr media
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH, I TOLD YOU, I TOLD YOU! They were going to come back together. And my marked words were correct-o as they went in trying to steal the twerp’s Pikachu solo, but reunited with their motto. Team Rocket’s plan of catching Pikachu ends with a surprise encounter. Pidgeot.
Tumblr media
Well, I can honestly say I wasn’t expecting that to happen in this episode. I’ve made my peace with Ash never seeing certain former pokemon again, with Charizard and Squirtle being major exceptions to that. But the previous arc had me questioning all of that logic when Ash sees Greninja again and that final snapshot of him and Butterfree. During this final season, we not only got Lapras, but Pidgeot. Two pokemon I thought I would never see again outside of a league memory hole or opening sequence and here they are. Back to the lamenting, Ash wonders what’s next in life. The good thing is that he doesn’t see his winning the world championship as a stopping point. That leaves an opening to seeing Ash again sometime in the future. Ash sees a rainbow (without a Ho-oh this time) and goes on a new journey…with his new shoes. Next time, a new adventure.
That’s literally what the final message was said before playing the iconic Type Wild. In the English version, there was no message and we got a slow piano version of Gotta Catch em’ All.
Okay, where to begin? Going into these 11 episodes, I thought that Ash was going to see not only all of his old pokemon, but his old friends as well. That totally was not the case. In fact, the only ones to show up in these eleven episodes were Misty, Brock, Cilan, and Tracey. Somebody’s been reading my thoughts and hand-delivering them to me. Yeehaw biatches! While I’m all for more Tracey and Cilan, I honestly wouldn’t have minded seeing everyone else too. Yes, even Serena. Not Dawn, though. She got enough screentime during Journeys. I am Dawn’d out again. Pokemon Journeys did this task almost flawlessly by having all of the former travelmates watch Ash as he competed in the finals against Leon. Except for Goh. Hey yeah, Goh and Chloe are not in these episodes. Same for the Alolan gang. That’s a bit of a sore spot.
But silly me and my fantasies. There was no way that was ever going to happen where we get all of Ash’s teammates together. Do you know how hard it is to get certain voice actors after a lengthy period of time? May’s voice actress is permanently retired. Who the hell knows where Max’s seiyuu is? And the fact that they even got Mamoru Miyano and Tomokazu Seki for anything without being charged a fortune is beyond me. Plus, after the massive wave of toxic fan-people with Serena, it’s best that we don’t go with any of that. They literally had to sneak her in an episode of Journeys without saying she’s going to be in an episode. I think we should all remember that this is the Ash and Pikachu show and everyone else is coming along for the ride. Yes, even the popular ones. And I guess because Misty and Brock were his first travel mates and the ones who stayed with him the longest, it would seem most obvious to have Ash, Misty, and Brock travel again.
Tumblr media
I was however miffed that the majority of these episodes were a bunch of fillery type of episodes. But the way I see it, we finally get to see Ash switch out his pokemon and have new team setups we never saw up to this point. Hell yeah, I like seeing Rowlet and Totodile together. Kudos for a team-up with Snorlax and Talonflame! But then you get the dilemma of the day end with an invisible Latias staring at Ash, it’s building to something worthwhile. I mean, not Ash catching Latias like any decent person would have loved to see, but it led to a very thrilling conclusion. I honestly thought the last couple of episodes were the best of the lot. This includes the lonely Banette episode, the Team Rocket reunion episode, the Latios/Latias episode, and the finale. Everything else, I could take or leave.
Okay, I take it back. I did enjoy Cilan being all Cilany and OH MY GOD, I DIDN’T EVEN SAY THE THING IN MY LAST REVIEW!
Tumblr media
This moment is brought to you by Dento-fruit! Dento-fruit: 100% Fruit for 100% Fangirls
Is this the need-all, end-all perfect cap to the Ash and Pikachu journey?
No. But what could they do if they wanted to keep our boy still forever 10?
Will it satisfy every Pokemon anime fan out there?
Again, no. The DP and XY fandom will dislike it for obvious reasons. Hey guys, Dawn got like a billion and a half cameos during Journeys and Serena still got that fucking kiss. I had to wait 16 and a half years for my favorite character to even speak. Fuck off with your wants.
Were these final episodes good?
Some. Not all.
Would I recommend this to disenchanted Pokemon anime fans?
Eh, probably the last couple of episodes. Unless they’re OG trio fans, then the whole thing.
Will Medea make a pentagram on the ground and ask for the otherside to have Tracey show up again?
Who said I stopped doing that?
Who knows what is to come of Ash and Pikachu in the future if we’re to get anything. We could get another project featuring Ash and Pikachu from the alternate universe. It could happen! Currently, Pokemon Horizons has been gaining a lot of positive traction between old and new Pokemon anime fans. I’m just beyond happy that Liko is NOT a product of Ash. Not sure if there’s a time-leap here, but for now I’m breathing a sigh of relief. I’ll save my happiness of certain casting choices for the Horizons review in the coming years. Crispin Freeman in the cast is the chef’s kiss of perfection. But it’s good to see several voice actors (both sub and dub) returning to voice new characters. Just to name a few people, Kazuya Nakai, Billy Bob Thompson, Yuka Terasaki, Kei Shindou, Erica Shroeder, Megumi Hayashibara, Ikue Ootani, and Lisa Ortiz. Those last three are a given as you cannot have a Pokemon anime anything without those three.
It would be nice to see a mention of Ash and Pikachu every now and then. Just something to keep Rica Matsumoto and Sarah Natochenney in work. While I’m mentioning them, I want to thank Ash’s voice actors. Hell, let’s add Veronica Taylor too! Thank you for the many wonderful years of memories. I’m going to miss the hell out of Rica and all of those banger opening themes she gave us for the past 26 years. Veronica, we all grew up listening to you. You are indeed the O.G. And Sarah, while I was skeptical of you for the first few years of you voicing Ash, I grew to enjoy it. Best of all, you exceeded my expectations in the last few years, especially your performance in the twentieth movie I Choose You. Thank you.
Hmm…do I have any other high hopes for the anime as a whole? Aside from more Tracey…I will never stop saying it. The other things I want is for a credible sight to give us the Japanese version and no more of this waiting months on end for Netflix to drop a batch of episodes. That ruined Pokemon and it ruined Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Pt. 6. You know it, I know it, and the entire anime world knows it. If Yu-Gi-Oh can have the Japanese version play on Crunchyroll, something like that should happen for Pokemon. That’s my high hopes for the future.
As of September 8th, 2023, the final eleven episodes (or Pokemon: Aim to be a Pokemon Master) will be available to stream on Netflix. Alongside the eleven is the Journeys episode that takes place in the alternate universe for Ash and Pikachu. If you live in Canada, Japan, or South Africa, you’ve already watched these episodes.
No what-if’s
Let me ask you a question. If you had a bowl of chewy pasta drowned in watery cheese like passengers on the Titanic, would you eat it? What if the bowl was only warm? What if there’s an overwhelming smell of Clorox and rubbing alcohol that's making you lose your appetite? No? Good.
Keith’s thoughts exactly. Although he’d already eaten half of it, so not exactly. But very close.
He fidgeted in the scratchy, over-bleached hospital sheets and lifted a cautious spoon of “mac and cheese” to his mouth. Disgusting. But it’s food, so might as well swallow. Besides, it’s not like it’s going to make him throw up later. Not like that at all. He’s got other things to worry about.
Ring-ring, ring.
Ring-ring, ring.
He looked up from the half eaten, half inedible food, annoyed and confused as to where the buzzing sound was coming from. His eyes rested on his ringing phone, which was sitting on a side table that had been pushed over next to his bed. He sighed, picking up the call and putting whoever it was on speakerphone.
“Hello?” The word was slightly slurred from the hospital mac n’ cheese. Keith set that aside for when the call was over.
“Hey, it’s Lance.”
“Oh hey Lance. You’re on speaker, by the way.”
“Alright. I just left my house, I’ll be at the hospital in half an hour.”
“Okay, cool. You better be wearing a sweater though, it’s raining.”
“Um… I’m not?”
“Go back and put one on. It’s cold.”
“I’ll be fine, Keith. I’m practically immune to rain and cold weather.”
“Lemme tell you a story, Lance. Once upon a time there was a president. He was only president for 30 days. Know why? Because he gave the longest speech ever in cold weather without a proper jacket. He got pneumonia and died.”
“How does that relate to this?”
“Put on a sweater or else you’ll get pneumonia!”
“I won’t get pneumonia, relax.”
Keith scrunched his nose and channeled his inner Shiro. “Go. Back.”
“Fiiiine. But don’t ever use Shiro’s dad voice again.”
“No promises.” Definitely no promises.
Lance huffed and hung up the phone. Keith was right, it was kind of cold. His fingers felt numb and shook slightly as he fumbled with his keys to unlock the door to his family’s house. Veronica gave him a weird look as he stepped inside.
“I thought you just left?”
“Yeah, but it’s still raining so Keith’s making me wear a sweater.”
She nodded, amusing herself with the thought of her confident, loud brother being so submissive to Keith. Bonus points to Keith for being smaller than Lance. “Figured.”
After getting one of his brother’s sweaters from the coat rack, Lance headed back out, sending a quick text to Keith as he got in the car, which he also “borrowed” from his brother.
they-call-him-the-tailor: i got a sweater, leaving now
do-you-know-the-mullet-man: okay, see you soon
pidgeon-of-the-sky: keep the pda off the group chat
*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*
To be honest, Lance hated the hospital.
He hated the crying, sobbing, wailing noises from all floors, signifying a death. He hated the doctors with emotionless faces and tired eyes. He hated its aura, the stiff, cold, empty, one slicked in sanitizer and medicine. He hated that there were people there, some fighting for their lives, and he hated that there were people who gave up trying. What he hated the most was all the illnesses, attacking people who he believed didn’t deserve it. It wasn’t fair.
But nothing’s ever fair. Lance figured that Keith knew that firsthand.
Even so, he’d live at the hospital for that mullet.
After ten minutes spent walking through dim hallways and sidestepping masked doctors with stern faces, Lance finally stood in front of the door. Room 246. Finally, it's like the one room Lance always struggles to find. It might as well be moving across the hospital. That’s a possibility.
Anyway, Lance knocked on the door and listened until he heard a voice say, “come in.”
He could see Keith waiting for him as he pushed the door open, sitting upright on the hospital bed with an empty bowl beside him. He’d have to remember to take that to the cafeteria when he left if no one else did.
“Hey, doing okay?”
Keith nodded and managed a small smile through chapped lips. “Yeah. What about you? Are you still wet from when you didn’t have a sweater?”
“Nah, I’m dry now. What did the doctors say about the tests?”
“The results came back pretty good. The therapy is working, but really slowly and only a little bit.”
Lance walked over to Keith’s bed and sat near the edge of it. “That’s good to hear.”
“Yeah.”
The two sat in silence for a minute before Lance realized they’d been sitting in silence. Even though he was the chatterbox, Keith usually started the conversation. He squinted at him now, trying to catch his eye, but Keith was too busy staring off into space. Yup, something was wrong. The question leaked out of Lance’s mouth before he could stop himself.
“Is everything okay?”
Keith’s head snapped up to see Lance’s eyes locking with his.
“Lance. Look around. Hospital. Boyfriend with lung cancer. Who’s about to hurl quote-on-quote mac and cheese in two hours. Do you think everything’s okay? Are you seriously asking me if everything’s okay?”
Lance rolled his eyes. “Other than all that.”
Keith hummed an assurance that came out a little more strained than he liked.
Which wasn’t enough for Lance. “Are you sure the test results are good?”
Keith sighed and flopped back on his bed. No use denying anything now. “The test results are fine. But I’ve been here for a year and a half now. Is there really… any chance that I’m going to… survive?”
“Of course there is.” Lance scooted closer to Keith. “Don’t think like that. You’re going to live. You’ll be fine.”
Keith squeezed his eyes shut and forced them open again in an attempt to subdue the tears he felt coming. “But what if- what if I don’t make it?” His voice was cracking and reduced to a whisper. He kept his eyes on the ceiling above him.
“No, no, no, no, no. I know you. You're strong. You’re going to make it.” Lance moved forward and cupped Keith’s face in his hands, forcing him to look at him. “No what ifs, okay?”
He planted a soft kiss on Keith’s forehead.
“Okay.”
“No what ifs.”
Just saw a gifset you reblogged and the gears in my head started turning and I remembered some stuff from when I was googling timelines and the like and frok watching stuff, you get it. So here's some things that I find kinda fun
Season 1 btvs aired in March and in the same month Scream 2 was also greenlit. Scream 2 started filming in June, the month season 1 btvs finished airing. Which is fun to me because Sarah Michelle Gellar is in both btvs and Scream 2 (apparently she signed onto Scream 2 without reading the script because of the success of the first scream film but I've not seen the interview so can't confirm). She also stars in 2 live action scooby-Doo films (Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004)) along with Matthew Lillard who played Stuart in the first scream film. In Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed Seth Green plays plays Patrick; Seth also played oz in btvs. And this is all very fun to me you see.
Also, only tangibly related, in Scream (2021) (AKA scream 5) and Scream 6 Jasmin Savoy Brown plays Mindy. In Yellowjackets Jasmin plays Tai and Christina Ricci plays Misty. Christina played Wednesday Adams in 2 Adams family films (The Addams Family and Addams Family Values). She was also in netflix's Wednesday where the tituler character (who is the same Wednesday that Christina played in the 2 previously mention Addams family movies) is played by Jenna Ortaga. Jenner Ortaga stars alongside Jasmin in scream 5 and 6. Again this is just very fun to me.
Also also in a previous ask you said how you kinda enjoy monster of the week and me too!!! like some times an all-consuming overarching plot is just a headach and sometimes it's nice just to have a different random dude doing a kinda different thing each week while still getting a bit of character development for the main girlys.
Also also also I've only seen a few early episodes of btvs (it's been on my 'to watch' list for like a decade now) but I couldn't remember who Xander was until I saw you calling him annoying and then I instantly remembered, which isn't great for his character in the first, and maybe quite possibly second, season I don't think...
Anyways sorry this is long as shit and may not make sense, love ya xoxo💖
Heya bestie, sorry it took me a while to get to this. I loved reading your message! These sort of thought trains are exactly my kind of deal haha. Very fun to me too. I started thinking about how to tie Buffy and Glee together and the best I could come up with was through Veronica Mars because Alyson Hannigan and Charisma Carpenter were both recurring on there and Jane Lynch and Dianna Agron guest starred. Boom!
Now that I'm further along with BtVS I do think its overaching stories are done well and make for better episodes than the Monster of the Week formula but I'm glad they don't completely abandon it because it is fun. I see what people say about s1 in terms of it being different than the rest of the series but I still look back on it as entertaining and I don't find the episodes people consider to be tedious bad. I actually really liked The Pack and even the puppet one. The character development is overall strong on BtVS so as long as we have that I don't mind if a lot of episodes aren't about the given Big Bad of the season. So yeah that is to say I think Buffy is probably up your alley! It was on my to watch list for a looooong while too but I'm very glad I finally got around to it.
And yeah Xander lmao, well to be fair I think people expected me to loathe him and I kinda don't? I have a well overdue ask about him but being halfway through the series I maintain that he is annoying but have gotten better and I can appreciate aspects of his ch. If anything I think his douchebagery peaked (so far) in late s2/very early s3 and now he's rightfully taken his place as Just Some Guy. I might eat my words later on if he becomes Finn Hudson levels of annoying. I doubt it though. (Unless he outs Willow and acts as the hero afterward in which case I hope he perishes <3)
of ice and men
event starter for @goldoandragonprince
      THE GARDEN, WHEN THEY ARRIVE, IS GORGEOUS. Each crystalline bead of the frozen trees glitters like diamonds, like a chandelier hanging above a ballroom. Sharena's hand runs along the sculpted ice bark of one, absently tracing the grooves and swirls. When the emperor speaks, however, she lifts her head up to listen. She must be careful-- if Anabelle finds herself nervous around this man, so should she.
"Welcome. I shall cut straight to the chase - no doubt you are wondering as to the purpose behind your summons." He doesn't leave much space for argument, hands laced behind his back. He stands tall, glancing up at a tree of ice, frozen still. Its tears glisten in the morning light. "I should like to ask you of my fiancée, Lady de Vaux. Is she well?"
      "She's well, your Highness." Sharena says with a nod, "Of course, there are a few parting pains that ail her—" she hums, "—But I don't think it's anything so out of the ordinary. It's completely natural for someone to feel this way before such a big event, after all."
      She gives him a small, courteous smile. "Needless to say, she's as wonderful as always. We're all lucky to have her."
He stews a moment before reaching for the tree and - in a moment of compulsion, perhaps - snapping off one of its frozen droplets. He doesn't look back as he queries, expression dark: "Parting pains?"
      Sharena flinches at the way he breaks away one of the beads of ice, a phantom finger running through her spine as she hears the soft snap. She doesn't like this way his expression darkens, or the way he repeats her words, his voice as cold as the frozen tree he admires. The Askran swallows; she knows who his sort are. Somehow, he reminds him of a young Princess Veronica– there's a hidden emotion in his voice, she just doesn't quite know what.
      She can't say it's easy consorting with them particularly. She much prefers someone as forthcoming as Anabelle.
      But she'll do so for her friend. However difficult it may be, maintaining this act and maintaining her cool, she'll do it.
      "Yes, your highness," she says, her tone as level as she can make it, "parting pains. It's something we all go through when things begin to change." she pouts, "Forgive me, if it sounded insulting. I swear that wasn't the case at all! It just didn't feel right withholding it from you, is all. I assure you it's not something you should take personally."
He listens, though it seems in some moments as though he is far away... Fist closes over the tear in his hand, and sparkles of ice flitter, flutter to the ground... He exhales. Turns to look at Sharena, expression both questioning and yet painfully neutral at the same time. "Yes, well, perhaps I will." Gestures for them to follow as he  continues again to lead through the ice garden. "What manner of parting pains? Specifically."
      Her eyes, when they meet his, present no challenge, but they don't exactly waver. At the very least, they try not to. She follows him through the garden when he begins to guide them, trailing a few steps behind him.
      "Well, your highness," again, there's that desperate trying in her voice-- that determination to remain calm and collected, in spite of how her feelings begin to tumult, "They mostly relate to Kurth and I. She fears we might grow apart once she takes her place in your palace. That's all." She speaks no further, however much she wishes she could. Speaks no more truth despite her knowing it's for the better. Sharena knows how some situations are better with her silence. She's certainly been taught as much, back in her own castle.
For the briefest flash of an instant, the Emperor appears taken aback, hand trailing to his lips in thought. "Is that true...?"
      The emperor's tone turns quiet– but it's not the enigmatic, cold sort of quiet that's so much like his garden of ice It's more thoughtful, almost furtive. It surprises her; just as Veronica's kindness once did. Sharena finds herself unable to give a proper response, instead turning to face Kurthnaga and giving him a nod, flicking her head towards the emperor as though to urge him to continue.
i've seen you post about jd and heather duke's mental health a lot but what do you think is going on with veronica? clearly something is but i dont know what.
Firstly the way you worded that is hilarious,
Anyway I think it's clear she's depressed and that was the intention canonically, but looking back at her as an adult whole emotional attachment to Heathers as a whole stemmed from Veronica being the most accurately I've ever felt represented as a mentally ill teenager when I first saw it, I view her as having BPD. You could say it's self projection obviously but almost all the symptoms and behavior she displays that made me feel so seen by the character are the symptoms I learned later in life are BPD.
The depressive episodes turned constant emptiness, the impulsivity usually revolving around self destruction, and her entire relationship with the Heathers and the problems she has with them at the start of the story all just scream borderline to me. Going from being someone's best friend for years and (according to chandler) being okay with their bad behavior and finding it funny to all of a sudden hating them and thinking they're a bad person when their behavior hasnt changed and Veronica's worldview and personality really hadnt either sounds a lot like splitting to me. Most people's idea of splitting is the opposite, when people talk about it they always talk about the scary concept of you being a good kind friend and then your scary borderline friend has an episode and makes you out to be the devil on a whim, but a lot of what I've experienced is that because of the black and white perception of people the disorder causes I will meet someone who is really really not great, treats me very poorly and has a million red flags, but because they were nice or entertaining in our first couple interactions all bad behavior of theirs is completely excusable if not invisible to me until either they do something big enough to trigger my splitting on them or I just have an episode and in this case it ends up being a good thing (for that relationship at least). So like when I was younger and unaware I had bpd i would look at Veronica's relationship with the Heathers and didn't question it at all, I was like yeah sometimes youre very close with terrible people for a very long time until you realize the things they've been doing are bad even though you... wouldve morally thought those things were bad from the start. I never understood why people questioned Veronica's logic in the situation or didnt realize from context clues they were supposed to have been close friends at the start of the movie.
Same with her handling of the JD situation, she goes from encouraging and going along with things to very against it and angry that he would even think shes okay with it all without vocalizing any of this to him once because the jumps happening in her head make sense to her and it doesnt occur to her to communicate these things to him.
And again just the overall emptiness, anger, self harm and recklessness, all that very much reads as BPD to me. Most of it overlaps with depression but most symptoms of depression are also symptoms of the disorder, plus its very rare that bpd and a form of clinical depression aren't comorbid.
Though I do want to note that there is a reason BPD is avoided as a diagnoses for teenagers around Veronica's age, a lot of the symptoms stem from emotional dysregulation that you can also experience just from being a teenager with a developing brain and unstable adolescent hormones and it's debated on how long it takes for the disorder to develop, some people believe it grows from having something like depression untreated as a child/teen and doesnt fully form until adulthood. That is to say,,, teenagers reading this if you also relate to these things I listed I'm not telling you that you have borderline personality disorder, nor am I saying Veronica has it canonically. This is just my opinion as someone who related to the portrayal of depression and mental illness that is Veronica Sawyer as a teen who later learned what my specific disorder was, giving me a certain bias context for hers.
BTS Fic Writing: 10, 19, 20
Woohoo! Questions! I love 'em.
10. Do you enjoy writing dialogue, exposition, or plot the most?
This is a difficult question, because the answer changes with my mood. Sometimes my muse is very dialogue heavy. I have written entire scenes in dialogue just to keep the flow and then will go back to add the actions and plot and descriptors.
So, in that sense, Dialogue tends to flow easier for me.
But this is not always true. Sometimes the plot just flows and I realise I haven't written any dialogue for a while and the scene is mostly just inner thoughts and descriptions.
I have also written a lot of exposition, but I do not enjoy it. I find it clunky and awkward. To me, true exposition is very hard to write. I like to try and let the information flow out naturally, rather than have a block of text all "so this is where we are and how we got here and what is coming up". It's necessary sometimes, especially if there's a time gap.
But if you write things properly, a lot of your exposition can be broken up into smaller info grabs released in dialogue or inner thoughts.
19. What is the easiest/hardest character to write about? Why?
Well, it's no secret the easiest characters I find to write are my ladies. The ones I adore and relate to the most, my damaged ladies, my loves. Olivia Benson, Veronica Mars, Emma Swan, Jane Rizzoli. To a lesser extent, Regina Mills and Kaylee Frye.
I think it's easier to me to explore my inner demons. Fic is free therapy after all.
You can see it a LOT in my VM fic. I needed to work through some shit at the time and Veronica helped me do that. Exploring the depths of her trauma, her isolation, her estrangement, her rape, her mistrust of all those around her while still having a deep longing for connection... it called to me. She helped me deal with a lot of trauma I held from my teenage years and early 20s.
Emma Swan came to me when I needed the damaged soul trying to forge a family she's always wanted, and finding nothing but duty and missed opportunity and expectation in her wake, battling self worth when she has experience from her entire life that tell her she's not enough and never will be. When I was battling with my desire to be free, but the necessity of being a single mother and sacrificing a lot of myself to do it through reasons that were not my fault, with feeling that sense of never having achieved what I was supposed to, of never living up to expectation.
I am still discovering Olivia and what she means to my psyche. She's a baby in my therapy garden and I will look back one day and say "Oh! That's why she was there, that's why I needed to force her into those horrific situations, so I could make sense of this particular issue in my life." I am not there yet.
In terms of the hardest characters to write?
I guess the ones in which I can't really grab hold of their motivations. I try to at least keep them sounding right and true to character, but I just don't feel them the way I do others. And, yeah, I wrote a lot of Logan... but he came attached to Veronica and was a large part of her emotional journey. The same for Ellito Stabler, I write him because he is important to Olivia, not because I particularly care about him all that much. I would say I was more emotionally attached to and understood Logan a lot more than Elliot.
But I am not attached to them the way I am the ladies.
The side characters, I guess. Right now, with SVU, I am struggling with Nick and Munch and Amanda. They don't... flow as easily for me. I don't really vibe with them.
I absolutely bit the bullet and just said "Cassidy went off and died off screen from the guilts", because i just could not stand writing him at all. The others I will attempt, but him ? No.
20. What is your favourite minor character you've written?
Lately, hands down, it's going to have to be Mistress Anna. She was fun. And you can tell, it comes out in the writng of it. So many people have said "you should bring her back", "you should write a side fic of just her (and Olivia)", and that is because the writing made her real, made her enjoyable. She was fun all around. I liked her so.
She bought something fresh and interesting and needed to Wicked Game.
I have my others, as well. There is Sweet Voiced Nancy, who loved little bitty baby Emma, and Mistress Edith, who loved little bitty baby Regina, from PIB. They were also cute little one off scenes that fleshed out the characters more.
There is the psych from Bitter Revenge, I really liked writing him... much for the same reasons I am writing Lindstrom in D5. Because they are the windows to the trauma and inner workings of the characters' brains.
Thank you, @dahllaz, as always.
My review of Afterlife With Archie no longer appears on the Comic Hunter blog so am posting it here:
While drafting this blogpost I wondered if others had this love/hate relationship with Archie Comics so I polled a number of people via Facebook to get their thoughts. Here’s a sample:
I read them as a kid, and I'm embarrassed about that now. (Sexist, demeaning, traditional gender roles, lack of diversity all the way around.) I guess it was mostly because they were readily available that I read them. And maybe it's crap like that, and growing up in the Catholic Church, that helped me to become/realize I was a feminist, which I am grateful for. Better to be awake than in the dark.
I read them and liked them but I always thought they promoted 'the American dream', white Pickett fence type of thing... Also had horrible values for women... Archie would getting loving from the hot evil woman and when she didn't want him he ran back to the girl next door who was waiting for him always... They always made fun of the dumb, ugly and out of town people... Riverdale was a place you had to earn your stripes greaser style and be home in time for supper... Fun to read though haha
I loved Betty & Veronica storylines best, like all the girls. I was reading them probably between the ages of 8-12?? I think they informed my understanding of male vs female roles....hmmmm, that explains a lot!
I never understood a freaking bloody moment of that crap and HATED it....still do. I also hate anyone who read it. Hate.
Loved Archie comics as a kid, and have bought the odd digest as an adult for mindless reading on long flights. I identified with Betty and thought of my older sister as Veronica. I was mostly interested in all of the female characters (B & V, Josie + Pussycats, Sabrina, etc)- their hairstyles, fashion choices, taste in boys, etc. For some even stranger reason, I loved the beach comics the best in a kind of a 'Beach Blanket Bingo' way.
The outright sexist content is too much. recent readings of current issues prove they reinforce negative gender stereotypes, female competition, bad self image values lower class putdowns, and many more negative aspects. The sunny, vintage illustrations hide a truth based out of bad values & sexual manipulation. We have put a stop on them in our house.
I read them and remember thinking at one point how odd it was that I continued to do so despite never really laughing.
Ok so Archie Comics. My best friend … used to read them. She and her sister had dozens and they would be scattered everywhere; piles of them under the bed and being a voracious little reader, of course I checked them out. Yes, I was a kid who would go over to play at someone's house and start reading their books. Ok so I HATED those comics. And I was shocked. How could I hate something my best friend liked? I hated everything about the comics : the story line, the graphics, and the characters. I had a sense that I was supposed to relate to either Betty or Veronica and I had a sense it was supposed to be the dark haired one that I would relate to, but I still hated her. I felt like the stories were about a world that didn't fit with mine at all, and I could sense what the comic wanted me to think and feel but that it Just Wasn't Right. And on some level, it frightened me that there was this Thing in my world that was clearly cool with lots of others, that I wished didn't exist. At that age I was still frightened by being 'a little different' but the evidence was mounting. Thank you for this little morning homework assignment. I still hate Archie.
I never ever touched it, I recall picking one up when I was a kid and thinking how out dated it seemed. Looking back now, the themes are relevant, but it obviously screams of an era.
My friends’ responses encouraged me that I wasn’t being unduly critical of Archie Comics. To me, the most annoying thing about Archie comics is that nothing bad ever happens. Archie’s car might get a flat tire. Jughead’s belly aches from eating 100 hamburgers. Reggie takes a beating. No big whoop. It rung false when I was a little kid and it sure as hell rung false when I actually entered adolescence and learned what kind of horrible bastards fill this mortal void.
Riverdale is a weird version of the suburban white bread American Dream. While we saw the dark side of this in movies like Blue Velvet and Pleasantville, bad things don’t happen in Archie Comics.
Bad things do happen In Afterlife with Archie #1. The worst things you can imagine. Awful horrible stuff, drawn grotesquely, gruesomely, and gloriously. Archie’s still a player, but he’s dropped the bow-tie and the sweater. Reggie’s still a weasel, but, for the first time, has remorse for his craven actions. The story pivots on Jughead, his friendship with Archie, and mainly his relationship to his faithful mutt, Hot Dog. I’m not going further discuss the plot except to say that Sabrina the Teenage Witch features prominently and her aunts Hilda and Zelda are finally portrayed as proper witches and not just a couple of odd ladies in funny hats. Afterlife with Archie #1 is hands down the best Archie comic I’ve ever read. It’s hands down the best comic I’ve read all year. If you haven’t read it, read it. And place your order for #2. These suckers are selling out fast.
