WHUMPTOBER 2023, DAY 5: “You better pray I don't get up this time around.” Debris | Pinned Down | “It's broken.”

Welcome to my annual Peregrineship fic, because every year is the same: I write them, I swear I'll write them more this year pinky promise, and then I just don't. That's my shtick. (Actually, Fly, it's your second ShuSere fic this year.) For real? Well, that's cool. Hasn't happened since 2019, I'm pretty sure! Yeehaw.

I honestly stared at the lyric, went "wow that sounds like Shun Kurosaki", and went from there. I'm not even in any shade of YGO mood atm, and I'm sure you can tell because I was very uninspired and it's short compared to what it could've been. Oh well! That's the trials and tribulations of a month-long challenge for you.

I did also do "It's broken" while I was it because, c'mon… It's Kurosaki. It's even odd I didn't break a rib like I usually do when it's him. See? I'm generous! I'm not a one-trick pony when I want to!

Speaking of always doing the same thing, just better each year. I didn't feel like writing canon divergent A5 crap again, so this time, I busted out an AU! Specifically, a Fire Emblem Engage AU, because it's light on storytelling but would allow me to easily have a character of obvious Japanese origins (thanks, Kagetsu!). So, in this one, I made Serena a wolf knight and Shun a wyvern knight because it made sense and also they're both classes I love playing in the game (thanks, Kagetsu! again).

I've also added a bunch of accents because this game bathes in stupid Baguettese-ish lore and I'm taking full advantage of it.

Tooth and Nail

Summary: The battle rages on, someone falls from a wyvern, and it becomes another knight's problem.

Amidst the smoke and debris of the battle, there runs a human-sized wolf. It sneaks through the enemy hordes, a dagger taking down those who get too close in swift moves, leaving only pawprints and the ashy blood of the long-gone Corrupted behind it.

The wolf isn’t running alone, far from it. Riding it is a knight whose eyes are fixated on the sky, a dagger always in her right hand and the left on the reins of her beast. Her armour, as slim as it is, is spotted with dirt and ash, rusts and browns mixing in with the blacks and greys until the original silver can barely be spotted by the naked eye.

The enemy troops are finally dwindling after hours of sending the dead back to their graves. Good thing, because the army of the Divine Dragon is starting to get tired. She has seen so many of her allies injured and teetering, the healers tired on the sidelines and barely hanging on themselves, and so many chipped-off weapons. The Emblems help, but only up to a certain point; and they need to avoid that stage of fatigue.

She herself has just disengaged from Ephraim, which considering they’re both so silent, only changes the background noise ever so slightly. It helps focusing, she supposes, especially since she’s been sent as reinforcement.

Then a body falls from the sky and, without even a wink of hesitation, the wolf knight speeds ahead.

For a long moment, she can only hear her heartbeats inside her brain. No new scream reaches her ears, her hands move on their own to eliminate enemies and protect both her mount and herself. She doesn’t have time for any of the Corrupted, no matter their rank in the hierarchy of power unofficially established among them.

She only stops when she reaches an armoured wyvern that’s landed near the body. It’s a bit of relief to see her companion has managed to land on his legs, sparing so many organs and dangerous bones in his fall; but the damage is clear, and despite the already pitter-pattering of the Corrupted corpse in front of them all, there is little reassurance to be found amidst the poison.

She dismounts in a flash, but before she can rush, she watches her comrade rises to his feet – or at least attempts to.

Somehow still able to move his feet in a coherent manner, he pierces the chest of his enemy on shaky legs and with trembling arms, gritting his teeth and prying his eyes open, before falling back down. The Corrupted fades away from existence at last.

“You better pray that I don’t get up this time around,” he spits out with a glare of fire risen at the sky, his hand grippling onto his spare spear with such strength that his knuckles have turned white.

She decides enough and enough and finally runs to him, her beast in tow, her ears careful to the tracks of foes but her eyes now glued to her companion, her friend, perhaps something more whose nature she now cannot ponder on.

Unfortunately, the wyvern doesn’t see it that way – and so she has to stop in front of her feet, recognizing the battle scars and knowing gaze of a tired but fiercely protective beast of scale and claw, the strongest in their army, whose armour is nowhere near as solid as her own skin. This isn’t the sort of barrier you can go through unscathed, but here, no fight has to be fought.

“Étranger, it’s me, Séréna,” the puny human says. “You recognize me, do you?”

The wyvern leans towards her, stares at her for a moment, and leans back.

“Thank you.” She turns to her beloved mount. “Luna, please stay here with Étranger. I’m going to check up on Shun.”

The wolf nods her head up and down before she rolls into a ball by the wyvern’s paws, letting her cavalier finally finish running to her companion.

It’s about time she does so: her fellow knight is biting his lip in what must be terrible pain, eyes shut close with tears prickling at their corners, so she kneels to his level. Even putting her hands on his shoulders doesn’t cause a reaction, so she has to resort to words – neither of their forte.

“Hey, can you hear me?”

That gets him to open his eyes again, his gaze still sharp as a blade in spite of it all.

“Séréna…? ’s you…?”

His voice is raspy yet remains understandable.

“Yes, it’s me. Are you injured?”

“I guess,” he hardly replies. “Annoyin’ shit, but nothin’ deadly.”

“Let me check.”

He takes a long, good look at her; then sighs and, slowly, switches position as to have his legs available to her.

“Make it quick, the battle’s not over yet.”

“For you, it probably is.” He prepares a witty response; she doesn’t let him be. “Don’t move until I tell you to.”

Shun blows hot air out of his nose but chooses to remain silent.

Of course she’s never been a healer, has never been good at diagnosing any sort of problems, let alone find a solution for your physical hurt. All she knows is from experience, experience that’s just enough to know what’s wrong in some broad stroke. She doubts anyone in the Divine Army trusts her with precise diagnosis; but when someone needs help, or getting to someone else who can provide it, now it becomes her mission. That’s what she’s learned by fighting by the side of the Divine Army.

Anyway, Shun’s legs are hurting, that much is clear. He can’t use them properly anymore, not without tumbling like a newborn foal or screaming with every other part of his body. When she tries touching them, just to evaluate how bad it gets, his face distorts and he loudly curses in a language she doesn’t speak. One of them is bent in such a way that she can only describe it as a capital letter. If she wasn’t used to it, perhaps she’d have been choked shocked �� but she’s used to blood, ash, and injuries.

“It’s broken,” she says as bluntly as possible, so it can register through his thick skull. “In fact, they’re most likely both broken. No doubt about your left one, at least, that thing’s bent.”

“Goddammit,” he curses under his breath.

“I can’t do anything about it on my own,” she admits, shame washing over her like pelting rain. “I need to bring you to a healer as soon as possible.”

“Sucks ass,” he swears again.

Séréna gets back to her foot and gives him her hand.

“Come on. We’re riding my wolf to Ruri, or whoever else’s the nearest cleric.”

He doesn’t want to agree, she can plainly see it.

“Étranger can still carry me.”

The wyvern in question loudly blows from her nostrils.

“How do you plan on manoeuvring a wyvern without being able to use your legs?”

He swears under his breath again but grabs her hand anyway and pushes himself up. She barely has the time to catch him before he falls over, pain all over his face. In the end, she decides she may as well carry him like her bride; it’ll be both easier and shorter.

For all of his bravado, once in her arms, he melts a little, letting his eyes close back down. Even his breathing seems to even out, much to her incomprehension, and it’s only now that she lets herself have her heart sunk by how vulnerable he is. It’s like it shouldn’t even happen, but now that she does know how bad he must be feeling, her strive to protect him has increased tenfold. His life is in her hands and it’s a blood-soaked honour.

As carefully as one can, she sets him on Luna’s back, then climbs on top of the mount in front of him.

“Hold my waist,” she tells him. “I’ll be careful, but it’ll hurt anyway.”

“Whatever it takes,” he replies as he spits out. “Let’s… not make this drag on.”

“Agreed. Luna, onwards.”

The wolf turns around and, swiftly, takes off back to their army’s core.

some personal thoughts on writing

All of my posts about how much I love writing and how much fun it is for me are completely honest and true. Very few things make me happier than the actual process of thinking through an arrangement of words and what they mean, and then putting them down on paper. And yet: at the same time my internal critic has been far more critical than usual lately, and the mental refrain of "why isn't this better, why aren't YOU better" has been a bit too loud. To the point that a few days ago, I opened up a fic I last worked on in *2014* just to die over it, fully prepared to think “oh god, terrible!” and go spend the rest of the night in another sullen funk. I can be (am) a neurotic person.

But instead I was like "oh wow, my writing HAS improved in six years," and yesterday I did some more digging and realized I've only been writing and posting YGO fic for about two years, after a long stretch where I basically just condemned everything I wrote to the wastes of the Google drive, and some of the work I've written in the past six months alone is some of my favorite work I've EVER written. Understanding the time that has passed was super useful: a firm ass-kick of perspective. Time IS in motion, the writing that happens now ISN’T the only writing that will ever happen, and the future IS full of growth I haven’t even seen or discovered yet.

So maybe in 2021 I'll learn how to fucking relax and just continue enjoying the act and process and be proud of what I've written in two years.

MAYBE. Because I also can't deny that the internal critic is a great person to have around, because she pushes me to work harder and not get complacent about what I'm willing to accept from myself, and it’s FUN to meet her challenges... (my own internal enemies-to-lovers?) She’ll still be around after this mental forest fire dies out, after all the old growth is cleared out for the new growth (this is a cyclical event I have to allow every so often, for the health of the forest), but preferably as a housecat this time, instead of a tiger. mixed metaphor AAAAAA I’LL LEAVE IT

Do I have a grand conclusion? Are things, as the story sometimes demands, RESOLVED? No. Part of an ongoing process. Don’t reblog this please and ty <3

How I feel about this character: I LOVE HER I LOVE HER I LOVE HER SO MUCH!!!!! She’s my fave female lead in all of YGO and she’s such a great character!! Her deck kicks ass, she has compelling relationships not only with Yuya but with most of the main cast, she stays plot relevant until the very end, her design is perfect... Literally what’s there not to love

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Sora, Yuya, Yuto, Masumi, Ruri, Rin, Serena-- *writes down 99% of arc v characters*

My non-romantic OTP for this character: As much as I like them romantically any platonic interactions with Sora + Yuzu or Yuya + Yuzu make my heart so warm... They’re such good friends I love them!! OH and Gongenzaka too!

My unpopular opinion about this character: Um... I guess saying that she’s the best female lead so far in YGO is already an unpopular opinion, as most people like Aki or even Asuka more. But she’s really imho the best! I just can’t begin to understand how people can’t see how great she is... She’s an amazing character on her own and doesn’t suffer a blantant shaft in the second half of the show like all the others do (or never be relevant to begin with, let’s pour one big out for Anzu and Kotori).

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: B R O ...... brainwashed yuzu vs yuya .. i would’ve fucking killed a man to see that

My OTP: hard choice between musicbox and fruits but prolly musicbox!! I love their teacher-student interactions so much they’re adorable and pure

My OT3: mysteryshipping... i rlly wanna explore yuzu and yuto’s relationship more, and i also like counterpart and fruit so it’s just my perfect ot3 tbh.

Aoi:

How I feel about this character: she’s... okay. I like her design and Trickstars (( i can’t begin to express how much i hate marincess monsters they were literally a downgrade lmao )) but her role in the plot is... Very... Um. Yeah. I know it’s YGO and she’s a girl character but wow. Way to literally waste all of what could be done with her.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: I liked shipping her with Yusaku for like... The first six eps of VR maybe lmao. I only really ship her with Takeru now, and only kinda lowkey, but I think her ship with Spectre can also be interesting if done right.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Aoi + Emma, aka maybe one of the only goddamn relationships I cared about and liked in this show. Their mentorship attitude is adorable and I feel like Emma really brings out the best in her and helps her become a better person!

My unpopular opinion about this character: ...She’s easily one of the worst YGO girls in terms of writing... She loses all major duels she has, fucks off from the plot for 40+ episodes and it has no meaningful impact because that’s how little involved she is, and is just generally treated horribly. I actually don’t know if this is all that unpopular or not bc I see mixed opinions mostly, but yeah.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: For her to, I don’t know, be an actually great character and not die 37894 times for the sake of manpain and so called ‘character development’ that keeps going nowhere.

My OTP: def phoenixship!

My OT3: i guess takeru/yusaku/aoi would be.. kinda neat....

My thoughts on Ry_ken

so since tumblr might die, I really doubt it but we’ll see. Might as well get all my salt on Ry_ken cause I have a lot of it. And honestly you all know what you’re getting into.

Petty

By looking this title, it’s just me being petty. BUT 1. I hate his deck theme 2. he’s annoying to look at. So for one, I really don’t like the gun dragon aesthetic. It doesn’t mix well in my opinion and it’s an eyesore to see. And most of his cards aren’t that good anyway so yeah. And for two, his face annoys me. Just it looks wrong, while he isn’t ugly really. But his hair looks too flat like while YGO has crazy hair, every time I see Ry_ken’s hair, it looks so flat to me. I can’t imagine that it has volume, like it can ONLY be 2D and it really annoys me. And his face shape. It’s too thin, it doesn’t look like he came from a YGO series. It looks like he’s from another show. Overall his design just feels like he came from a different show and it always annoys me to see it.

Inconsistent

He really makes no sense over his appearances. Like his first big appearance has him say how the internet is bad as it’s all fake and allows for people to trick people. But then it’s revealed he wants to kill the Ign_s cause his dad. And how does that connect? The Ign_s have NOTHING to do with the “internet is fake” line he said. They didn’t make the internet and at the time they were isolated from the net too so they’re not influencing people to do anything. And not like he ever brings this idea back ever either. Now he’s all MY DAD AND IGNIS MUST DIE so what was the point of that speech? The writers had no idea what to write and went for the generic, “the internet sucks” speech.

Or how he deals with Yus_ku’s real identity. So Ry_ken was interested in Yu_aku’s real identity but he never did anything with it. AND I MEAN NOTHING. Nothing good or bad. DataS_ormers say he wanted to warn Yu_aku but they have met face to face when Ry_ken knew his identity and it seems they never talked ever. There wasn’t a scene to even suggest he tried to talk to him. Just him buying some hot dogs and leaving saying they probably won’t be buying anymore. What is the point of looking for that info if he was going to do NOTHING with it. It couldn’t be the Yoshida thought it would be a good cliffhanger but never cared to do anything with it.

He’s a dumbass

I’ll be honest, Ry_ken is stupid. Just once you learn everything about Ry_ken, you realize he’s just a daddy’s boy and that’s it! And if you’re uncomfortable with that wording, GOOD! Just his motivation is pathetic. He missed his dad after turning him in FOR POINTLESS CHILD TORTURE and now he’ll do anything his father asks. Look I’m not blaming him for being scared when the torture was going on and he even did the right thing, turning his father in. BUT THE FACT HE SAYS HE REGRETS IT BECAUSE HE MESSED HIS DADDY THAT HE THOUGHT I SHOULD HAVE NEVER DONE THAT, MAKE THAT MOOT. That doesn’t make Ry_ken complex at all, this isn’t him have mixed feelings. This is him deciding that doing the right thing was WRONG CAUSE HE MISSED HIS DADDY SO MUCH. Like complexity would him wondering if it was right as his dad is in a coma, him still loving his dad but fighting him as his father was wrong or him helping his dad but very uncomfortable about it. NOPE, HE’S SO ONBOARD WITH DOING ANYTHING FOR HIS DAD, HE FINDS FIGHTING FOR HIMSELF DUMB! So in other words the big bad rival is a daddy boy that refuses to think for himself now despite doing so when he was 8. Just wow so threatening.

Also a good example is he a fourth of the episode 78 saying how Blood Shepa_d is a lone wolf and the episode ends with BS saying screw you, I’m not joining you and leave with Ry_ken saying that’s what I expect from him. Then when 79 has BS being said lone wolf, he’s SHOCKED that he’s doing this alone. Just why are you shocked that he’s doing the thing YOU EXPECTED HIM TO DO???!!!

He’s incompetent

One of my friends pointed this out but Ry_ken is not a good rival. He’s a worse villain. Just how can you expect him to be threatening WHEN HE LOSES IN THE FIRST INTERACTION. In that moment, he’s no longer a threat as he already lost. And to make it better he lost again. So currently his record against Y_saku is 2 ties and 2 LOSSES. No one expects him to beat Y_saku ever and the entire end point of season 1 was Y_saku NEEDING to beat Ry_ken and NO ONE WAS WORRIED. Plenty of people thought it was stupid to make that climax when he already lost so they needed to have him beat some people that Y_saku already beat to show that he was “strong”

And then when he beats Wi_dy, he just lets Lightn_ng go carrying Wi_dy. If it was your life mission to kill the Ign_s WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU WILLING TO LET ONE YOU MORTALLY WOUNDED GET AWAY SO HE COULD HEAL!!! HE DIDN’T EVEN CARE TO CHASE.

Or his duel with BS in episode 78. The point was to get BS to join his group and that didn’t happen. So that was pointless. So good job using your time Ry_ken.

His fans

Look Ry_ken is a shitty character but those are dime a dozen, it’s his fans that are the real pains in the ass. Just if you disagree with them, they will attack you. This isn’t me making up shit, this has happened and just that’s so toxic. RY_KEN MUST BE LOVED AND IS THE MOST COMPLEX GREY CHARACTER EVER AND IF YOU DISAGREE, I WILL BULLY YOU. Just anything something happens that doesn’t involve him or his “canon otp” dat_storm they have a fucking hissy fit.

Adding to that most of his fans are dat_stormers and god do I hate their behavior. As there are reasonable people in that group BUT they are grossly outnumbered by the stupid. If anyone DARES and I mean DARES to ship something else, at least one gets bitchy and take the time to say, “MY SHIP IS CANON, MY SHIP IS CANON”. Any ship that involves Yu_aku or Ry_ken with someone else is attacked as their canon must be protected. But honestly if they were so sure of their “canon”, they would be chill.

Look at the Hom_ra fiasco. When it was revealed that Ry_ken was going to be missing for a bit, his fans WENT INSANE when they saw Hom_ra’s design and HATED HIM. There was so much HOM_RA IS GOING TO BE EVIL theories just to justify Ry_ken saving the day and protecting his “bae”.

Overall, Ry_ken is a PATHETIC rival, duelist and character. Overall we DOWNGRADED from Reiji.

If you like him good for you just stop being an asshole about it.

A Very Merry (Scandal|Pride)shipping Fanworks Rec

Part two of my response on a post yesterday (part one was Sealshipping: [X]). I think I’ll have better luck with these two ships because they’ve been popular ships for a long time, even before Mahad was introduced.

So, here’s me cracking my knuckles and starting.

Btw, there is a lot of works about Prideshipping in general, and with DSOD it multiplied. So as a challenge, I’m focusing on the ones that do not have smut of any kind. If there is, it’s just a teensy weensy amount.

I haven’t found much fics of Scandalshipping, usually the ones I find have some Prideshipping mixed in, which is why I combined it into one list.

In terms of art, there’s a lot of ‘em (for both ships), so I won’t focus on that much. You can easily search for them. Pixiv will be your friend.

Fanfiction

Stepping Stones by evexe-n (manatsuko) and rowanthestrange_yugihell - It’s a fic series that features both Scandalshipping and Prideshipping. It’s the kind of series you want to read when you want fluff and humor with just a few pinches of feels.

Not The End by Prismatic Bell (Nina_Dances_In_Technicolor) - A post-DSOD Prideshipping fic that is a must read after you watch the movie. Because yes. Yes. You will not only love Atem and Kaiba, but also Mokuba, Mahad, Mana, and all the characters except that one KC employee who insists on adding boobies on every game. Kaiba’s dry wit is one of my favorites here. Also, this story will punch you emotionally.

Smoke and Mirrors by FloaromaMeadow - So how about we take DSOD and make it even sadder. Bonus points for Kaiba making dead jokes and Atem not being amused.

Our Fairly Modest Just A Few Close Friends Ancient Egyptian Wedding by rowanthestrange_yugihell - A feel good post-DSOD Prideshipping fic. They get married and there is no explanation on how a bunch of Ancient Egyptians were able to stop being dead to attend a wedding, probably Kaiba’s sheer force of will in screwing the rules.

In the Shadow of the Pillars by zuzeca - I like the fact that Atem punches Kaiba in the gut. I also like how the writer tackled reincarnation here. It features more pairings besides Scandalshipping and Prideshipping but they all blend so well.

Stocks by TunaFax - Kaiba is canonically an asshole but we will never get tired of it because seeing written word of his assholery is a gift from the heavens. Here’s one more fic that showcases this. Plus points for making Yuugi a bit of an asshole too.

Getting Rivalzoned (And Learning To Live With It) by oogenesis (vriskacircuit) - The premise is unrequited Prideshipping and is 80% hilarious and 20% feels.

Sunday Get-Together by Deck Divination (astralpath) - AU in that Gozaburo is still alive and Kaiba is dating to spite him.

A Spirited Challenge by Sparklefists - A supernatural AU featuring Kaiba’s intense skepticism over the supernatural despite playing chess with a supernatural being several times.

Ma'at's Executioner by Iced Blood - Very Season Zero, probably more Season Zero than Season Zero itself, something rare in most YGO fics. A little OOC since this is post-Duelist Kingdom and this is the time Yami vowed not to be season zero. I still approve. It’s more platonic than romantic.

The Gambler's Debts by Iced Blood - Has a Season Zero feel to it. I love the conversation between Yami and Kaiba, it felt like reading a conversation between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice. Except this Hannibal is less violent (usually) and less cannibalistic, and the Clarice is more vicious. This is one of the fics where I approve of the “Call me Yami” trope because it gives an explanation that is wonderfully tied in canon. This is also platonic.

Stay Gold by S-FLAME, translation by @drummerdancerficsandpics - Post-DSOD doujinshi again, continues to the last scene of the movie.

22. Popular character you hate?

pretty much everyone who knows me knows i dislike Luci// na (F// ire Emblm) with a passion. she’s really bland, over hyped, and eugh idk i’m done explaining why i dislike her i’ve been doing this for years it’s literally my most FAQ since i’ve been on tumblr pretty much. i have my reasons but i am just. so done. with the discourse. she’s not that great of a character imo and that’s that.

i guess other charas that i dislike that are popular that i can think of would be the Nohrian siblings (perhaps with the exception of Leo most of the time) from FE Fates but eh i can deal with them.

oh and in the ygo fandom. Rio. i don’t like her. never liked her. never will. probably for the same reasons as Luc// ina too lmao...

6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?

not really. the closest thing i think would be rottenshipping tho i never hated it more like i was really iffy about it like “ugh this is just for aesthetics and angst”... but i fell for it too lol. plus, manga!yuri certainly helped convince me...

omg okay now that i recall yes... also predatorshipping cuz... i still don’t think there’s any good canon support for it (which is why for a while i disliked it) but... fanarts man... guess i’m weaker than i thought...

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

oh man this is gonna sound like me being a HUGE hypocrite cuz i’ll occasionally reblog / retweet fanart of this and even share it with my friends but... TakuKamu (FE Fates).

i LOVE Takumi but... it’s not that i don’t ship him with Kamui/Corrin... i just... i guess it has to do with my dislike of Corrin. I’m like... “he could do so much better / he deserves so much better.”

i actually really like them as BROTP a lot more actually... but i DO like Kiragi as Corrin’s son so that... augh i have mixed feelings, if you couldn’t tell...

others from FEFates include: Corrin x p much anyone who isn’t a Corrin-sexual (i’ll still reblog / retweet it but again it’s more for the other character they’re paired with than for the OTP itself) and again i just... don’t like Corrin much (wow add Corrin to the list under #22 pls I forgot to do that).

so we rented Promare and

wow that movie is a

fucking trip

it is not a movie it is an experience

(it was not at all like that the second time around and I’m not sure if that is better or worse...???)

a Highly Experimental Style of having idek how much conflict you can shove in one movie, which we kept pausing to guess plot twists about 5 seconds before they happened, which is why it took us like 4 hours to watch the movie, anyway here’s a recounting of our watch:

- less than 10 minutes in: “uhhh I know I should give it time to get good but this does get better, right??” “IDK literally no one on twitter said why they liked it, they just said they loved it go watch it and drew fanart of a person we haven’t seen yet, maybe it’ll get good when we find that protagonist?? Maybe they set this fire and we’ll meet them soon?”

- prediction: “surprise, mystery protag is Big Boss”

- 1) nailed it

- “Not exactly a criticism but this is very 90s cartoon”

- prediction: “Galo’s going to have to break Lio out of jail”

- 2) Bad guy terrorists are actually victims of discrimination/genocide

- prediction: “Lio planned to get captured on purpose??”

- Teenage Mutant Pizza Turtles scene. Also I couldn’t remember anyone’s names because I hadn’t turned on subtitles to go with the English track yet so we have Old Time Cop Show Guy, Gonzo from Spirit Tracks, Ice-cold Megane guy, Feral Scientist Entrapta, Misty, okay I did learn Galo’s name. Also what’s that guy from Teen Titans, Cyborg?? We have Evil Cyborg and All Might as well.

- prediction: “Galo’s all like ‘I love my dad Gov!’ so Gov is def. gonna be evil, he’s secretly corrupt and actually supporting Burnish discrimination”

- prediction: “Pizza guy is Burnish”

- nailed it

- prediction: “Aina’s sister is very sad looking she’s secretly a Burnish, this is also why Aina is so pro-Burnish-rights”

- Discrimination/racism/immigration/marginalization commentary, “Maybe twitter liked the movie so much because it tackles current topics??”

- missed opportunity: “Wait wtf is under the ice? ....hm I guess that’s just how the art style is. It’s probably nothing after all.”

- Het ship kiss time

- Kiss of life, “Lio is too OP”

- “Oh okay my bad I guess it was funerary rites instead????”

- prediction: “now that his ideals are challenged Galo will have a big anguished ethical dilemma re: dad Gov and Lio’s accusations”

- 3) okay or he’ll not be conflicted at all and just confront dad Gov immediately I guess

- why does the volcano look like a demon, is that relevant

- 4) Volcanopocalypse now

- 5) Space travel, complete with Space Whales

- 6) Gov isn’t even pretending not to be evil

- prediction: “Wait is Gov actually Burnish??”

- prediction: Okay no Lio will rescue Galo instead then

- “We’re literally already sacrificing everyone on earth except 10,000 people I hand-selected as being worthy, are you seriously balking at the fact that we’re going to torture some Burnish sacrifices to do so.”

- 7) “We knew you got captured on purpose so we let you escape on purpose dumbass, we outplayed you”

- prediction: “Okay so they just shoot an Absolute Zero Bullet into the volcano to freeze the magma and end the apocalypse!!! ........................... actually that’s probably super bad for the Earth’s core and will cause another natural disaster apocalypse but that’s a battle for another day...??”

- prediction: “um okay Heris/Elis will break Galo out??”

- prediction: Aina won’t get on the ship, forcing Heris/Elis to sabotage the launch

- 8) Epic dragon final confrontation, complete with YGO psychotic faces. “....WAIT WE’RE LITERALLY ONLY HALFWAY THROUGH THE MOVIE WHAT. THE FUCK????”

- prediction: Galo will have to chill Lio out

- “What...is in Gov’s fist... NEVERMIND Galo SMASH”

- punching out your feelings YYH style

- prediction: They’re gonna evaporate that whole lake

- 9) “WHAT THE FUCK THERE WAS A SECRET COMPLEX IN THE ICE THE WHOLE TIME???? YOU CAN’T INTRODUCE THIS MANY MAJOR PLOTS TWISTS IN ONE MOVIE THIS IS NOT HOW DRAMATIC STRUCTURE WORKS”

- Welp Aina’s definitely missed the launch now

- 10) that one gif from the History Channel, because “It was aliens all along.”

11) DEUS X MACHINA, THEY REALLY JUST FUCKIN WENT THERE “I literally can’t tell if this movie is self-aware or not but either way this is the best scene in the entire movie”

- “You’re not chosen ones this is literally just a convenient deus ex machina shoved in here to help resolve the plot DEUS OUT”

- “Is he dead?” callback

- “Why...are you questioning if Gov killed Deus...he literally gave a speech about making hard decisions, is murdering the majority of the population of Earth, also the Burnish, etc, how is the death of this one man the moral tipping point.”

- prediction: “GENOCIDE. CULTIVATION. BEAM. Okay Gov is LYING about the other planet, he just needs it as an excuse so he can build the warp drive in the space ship, so he can kill the Burnish, so the whole world will be covered in lava, which turns to rock, which he will turn to farmland once he brings the ship back down and becomes CAPITALIST DICTATOR OF THE WORLD.”

- Blue Eyes White Dragon, x4

- 12) Heris sabotages the ship

- Did....did Gov just fire an Absolute Zero Bullet into the volcano as literally an afterthought that has zero effect on the plot????

- 13) Gov is Burnish

- prediction: “I just realized, we haven’t seen Aina in ages. Jump, Heris! Your sis will catch you on her hovercraft!”

- nailed it

- “Now he’s performing CPR....callback to the kiss of life...?”

- 14) “Callback to the kiss of life!! ..................this is.....a very long kiss.....”

- “no pyro!!!”

- “Wait did he....I swore Lio had his shirt on while they were making out...??”

- “Get in loser we’re going firefighting!”

- “So the cloud forms a heart before they start Drifting in their giant robot...”

- 15) “I don’t understand...did we apocalypse the earth? Did we avert it? Is the earth destroyed? is the earth fine? was the earth entirely renewed? what was the plot resolution here??????”

- “WHAT IS THE RESOLUTION WITH GOV????? WHAT????”

- “We thought this movie was addressing deep issues and then promptly waterskiing over them, but it turns out it was aliens all along and now they’re gone so uh what the hell kind of allegory is that.”

In summation, we have no idea if it was good or not. The first time around the sound was mixed extremely poorly with loud battle scenes, excessive shouting, and not being able to understand anyone (forcing me to turn on subtitles while watching in English), which weirdly wasn’t so bad the second time around.

Promare might have been good and deep if it had like 10 fewer plot twists and allowed the remaining 5 time to breath and reflect on their implications. Character stuff would have been interesting to see explored. TBH this probably would have been an amazing anime series and we might not have minded the aliens plot twist then.

On the other hand, it’s fun, watching it twice in a row was actually fun, and whatever reviewer the roomie found who said it was “not campy” was lying out their ass, we nearly died of all the gay innuendoes to be had. And the art is pretty cool.

Ok so picking up right after the Kiku and Tekeru thing, I am both jelly and salty that Takeru got a cute final scene with his girlfriend AND got to mention his admiration/crush on Yusaku while Aoi didn’t get such scene with her girlfriend D: only talked with Kusanagi about her own admiration/crush on Yusaku (and Kusanagi keeping the store in place so Yusaku has a home to come back ;w;) which was cute as well but come one! saving her friend was her main drive during the second half of S2 and said girl is also one of the “lost children” like Yusaku and Tekru, come one not even a couple of seconds of her arriving where Aoi is or something!?!

it was nice finale I think~ glad it got around three episodes for its final duel

while truth be told I didn’t feel the duel was super engaging regarding the actual plays of the duel, which I feel like that was one of VRS weekness among many, it didn’t have that many “WOW” duels, it did still have good moments

for one the obvious Ai having a monster for each of his fallen friends and creating an ultimate monster with them

there was a bit of a hearbraking moment when Yusaku did a surprise fusion summon of one of Revolver (his rival) dragons and Ai commented something on the lines of “so this is the power of your new friend” which seems like a reference to the end of S1 where Ai was on Yusaku’s side against Revolver and when they were losing he told him to think on the bonds and friendships he had, but at that point he really wasn’t there yet, so he only watched sadly at revolver since he was the “friend/special person” he was trying to reach

(also characters using other characters’ cards in their decks for surprise moves is so cool and such a shame it happens very rarely)

another bit that I like was that, the monster Yusaku used to summon Revolver’s dragon looked kinda like Revolver’s first design, the one with the empy yellow-ish eyes, with smile and darker skin included and Yusaku then used that monster alonside two other, one who had a bit of a Takeru expression and the other with Blue tones like Aoi which may be just a coincidence but I like to think all three were a reference to Yusaku’s team sort of being there in spirit helping him summon his super ace

the obligatory “final draw” which was a card that had Yusaku himself in it and gave it the ability to draw three more cards lol but said cards were also the first three monsters he used with Ai in their first duel which was pretty sweet

the one thing I feel was a bummer is that only two of the “code talkers” appeared (https://yugioh.fandom.com/wiki/Code_Talker_(archetype)?file=Code_Talkers.png)

which, considering their designs invoke the image of the ignis, and that they all combined could form a “complete link” alonside Yusaku’s ace dragon, is such a shame they didn’t appear in the end

that being said I am glad that the main one, “Decode Talker” made the final move

I also liked that the final move was a case “if you hadn’t done that extra move you could have won” “yeah I knew what you had prepared but still went ahead with it”

and I will admit before ending Vrains did manage to make me cry a second time in its run, granted I cry with anything but still lmao

once the duel was over and Ai was “dying” it got me, specially because of the talk about Ai’s name, meaning “love”, and how despite Yusaku giving him that name in a whim (becaise of the artificial intelignece but also because at the beginning he was just an “eye”) Ai really did love his name, and he learn to love Yusaku as well, he even got the second ever in YGO history “aishiteru” after GX’s Yubel

(or third if you count the Zexal manga which had Astral also saying it, the anime one didn’t say it but anyone who has seen it knows that Astral also feels the same)

then epilogue was your usual and quick where is everyone right now, with the first opening playing included, and a final “AI IS ALIVE, somehow!” surprise lol

I wonder if it’s only to give the fans a bit of a happy surprise or it may actually be sequel hook? Zexal also had an open ended ending, so it’s probably nothing but who knows maybe YGO7 will be a crossover season like some people theorize

speaking of Zexal, while I haven’t watched the final arc of vrains completly, I do like Ai’ development that sort of mixes zexal’s Ryoga and Astral with the “partner with a completly opposite personality whose relationship with the mc is the core of the story and both have the final duel of the show” and the “best friend turned antagonist to fight for the sake of his “people” in what its clearly a suicide mission while making sure all their friends hate them so they won’t hold back”

and to give Vrains credit, Ai’s change of side feels like something that was bound from the get go and always alluded during the confrontations with s1 and s2 antagonists, revolver and Lightning, even Zexal’s Ryoga wasn’t quite like that

ah well, in the end vrains was quite a weird, super flawed ride, I don’t think it reach highs quite like GX, Zexal or even A5 for me personally, but still had some good stuff and characters (I will forever love Aoi despite how many times the narrative/writers seem to hate on her constantly) so I don’t really regret following it, even on its meh-ish and actually bad moments.

that being said it still on the lower tier for me, and certainly woulnd’t really recommend it

now to wait for YGO7, whatever that one is
