While I was reading Blue Exorcist I didn't fully register just how dark the Illuminati arc was, but watching it animated... holy shit.

I could not imagine going through what Izumo has and is going through. And being in the place of any of the other students? Dealing with unkillable regenerating zombies speaking to me in broken up bits saying they want to go home? Having so much pressure to do things most adults wouldn't be able to do? AT 15 YEARS OLD??

I feel like this is the turning point for the series bc it goes from "heehoo funny with epic fights and some character bonding" to "everyone you love is going to die if you don't fight right now. This world is bleak and horrifying under the thin veil we have created and the fate of it rests on your shoulders, all of you."

#pspspsps tokyo ghoul mutuals if ya like half human protags dealing with the horrors of what it means to be their other half #and deep philosophical thoughts and violence and the eternal struggle of good vs evil where there is so much grey #then blue exorcist is for you #10/10 highly recommend #anime or manga they're both really good tbh #though the anime is non canon after season 1 episode 17. The rest of the episodes don't make sense with season 2 or 3 #season 2 and 3 follow the manga very accurately if a bit rushed #I really really hope that since it appears like the manga is getting close to the end that we'll get more seasons sooner than every 5 years #I need to see chapters 120 and 126 animated!! #anyways I'm gonna go draw that pink bastard lmao #blue exorcist #ao no exorcist

#A nice episode :) I have a lot of headache tho and forgot everything I wanted to say #The ss/kk is nice :) It's nice every time Akutagawa spontaneously saves Atsushi seemingly with no reason to #The animation was very nice! It's evident a lot of money and effort went into this season and these last episodes in particular #And I like the art style a lot better than the one in the other seasons. Even season 4 where the animation is comparatively as good #What more. The Kyouka screentime is nice. The whole Guild aftermath celebrations section is very nice and heartwarming to watch #I still take a lot of issues with the entire way Kyouka's entrance exam was conceived but I think they're fairly self-explanatory. #Also fundamentally coherent with b/sd's general worldviews so #But even then there's a line that bothers me to an unexplainable amount from the first time I watched it to now. #The “it hurts” when she's hugging Atsushi. And I've reflected over that line so long from the moment I first heard it... #I think. Its meaning is to symbolize how being in the light sometimes will still result to be too overwhelming for Kyouka– #to the point at times it will still end up hurting her. But that doesn't make it any less worth it #So to say‚ there's no such thing as perfect happy endings. But she is going to be okay nonetheless #BUT IT STILL BUGS ME. I feel like it's part of a school of thought for whom we should just accept the fact that there's evil in the world– #that we can't eradicate. And nothing can be done about it. Which I don't think is a functional or useful way of thinking? #ALSO I know it's. Most definitely‚ 99% not how the scene is supposed to be interpreted #BUT ATSUSHI IS THE ONE HUGGING AND THUS HURTING HER and you know how there is this very slight narrative that seemingly– #frames Kyouka and Atsushi as romantic partners and like... Idk. #In that context the line almost feels expression of a narrative of wives having to bear pain that is natural and unavoidable. #I know this definitely wasn't the intended meaning it's just a bad impression for some reason I can't be able to shrug off even after years #But don't listen to me #I don't think there's anything else to add. #I stand by my 7/10 rating for NATLA #But I'm watching the episodes in full (as opposed to flipping through them as I did before) #And I still don't like Bumi or Katara or Iroh's characterisation #But Ozai's is really irking me #Just because I love how the animated version of Ozai is so arrogant #He's not manipulative #Even when going to Azulon to ask for Iroh to be dethroned it's not very subtle. #It's what really sells the “of c I should make a position for myself and rule the world. I'm just that great. And my kid is that great too” #I get what they were going with in NATLA about manipulating Azula with fake affection for Zuko to pit them against each other #But I really think that the animated show's Ozai's abuse is just as damaging. Just different. #“You were born to be perfect like me and every single sign you're not is a disappointment of what you could achieve” is a #psychological MOUNTAIN to put on your kid #IDK. I know it's not a HUGE difference like Bumi but #It irks me. And it's irking me continuously. I liked OG Ozai and his flaws and his methods. #You know in a villain way. It just... #There's a line from “Stormbenders” (yes I've been in fandom that long) where Katara's like #“I have just realised that Ozai and Azula are petty... and that makes them so much more dangerous than I thought” #Similar vein to Yon Rha being “sad and empty” #And for Azula's eventual (need-to-be-hard-earned) redemption arc I just...
