#I know nothing about techno music or classical music

i was wondering, do you have any fuffy songs? or songs you like to listen to that make you think of btvs while you write?
I think this is as good an excuse as any to share my Fuffy playlist.
66 songs, constructed in a particular order to roughly tell the Faith/Buffy story from start to finish. Some of them are more Fuffy within themsleves than others. Special mention to Anything Like Me by Poppy, Switchblade by LP, Speak Your Mind by Alice Merton and Strawberry Gashes by Jack of Jill for being obviously written about Fuffy specifically.
As for writing music, I like to avoid music that makes me think too much, because that'll distract me from thinking about the actual words I need to write. Go-to writing music is usually high tempo techno, or Beethoven.

So how would the tribes and their leaders react to the grey trolls?
Pacifically Delta Dawn,Queen Essence and King Quincy and Queen Barb.
I read from one of your posts that the grey country trolls were grey because they liked other music genres and were considered criminals resulting them getting kicked out of their home and if I'm not mistaken a few were kids?
How would they react to seeing Delta Dawn since she is mostly likely the one who made the decision.
The (some) funk trolls were researchers that were left behind so how will they feel when they meet Queen Essence and King Quincy, and how will those two react knowing how they became grey.
And how will Queen Barb react to the reasons the rock trolls left and became grey especially since one of them was deaf.
Pop: The Pop trolls try to welcome back the grey trolls with open arms. (They are so happy by the discovery of them Because friendship) Who for some reason aren’t to excited to come back? I wonder why.. (The grey trolls are way to scared of what the pop tribe is like they basically took a break from being “happy”like the others and now see how messed up everything is) The Pop tribe is determined to bring there colors back no matter what (I’m talking loud obnoxious parties, activity after activity, loooooonnnngg hugs that last for days, being braided to another troll who is supposed to be your fun buddy) but after a long time (and tons of reflection) they realize how messed up it all seemed. So they took it slow and let them just get accustomed to everything, a party or two a week and not a lot of loud noises (plus no more tying people together) gradually overtime the grey pop trolls are able to be in the village and not feel overwhelmed (a looooot of insecurity about being grey though)
Techno: Trollex welcomes all the Techno trolls who were lost, left or born in the grey tribe. (He was initially shocked but quickly relieved to find the missing trolls who have been gone for years!! Plus the new editions) He tries to help them as much as he can, ie fixing torn flippers, setting up a new foster system for future trollings, making sure to know who is here or missing every week, overall just trying to help with what he can to make them more comfortable (He didn’t do much wrong with the grey Techno trolls as some of the other tribes besides a few getting separated from the group by currents and no one noticing) but he tries to right whatever wrong there is…..and throw a few raves in their honor he is still a troll he will party. The grey Techno trolls greatly appreciate it and get along well with the other Techno trolls.
Funk: The absolute guilt the royal family has is insane!!! Not only did they leave behind a group of researchers, but they are the ones who asked for them TO BE THERE!!(they did go back and look for them but found nothing) they try to make amends and do whatever to help the trolls, the fact the trolls were grey because of them almost put them in an early grave. They start figuring out ways so that this situation would never happen again (I feel like trackers would be their best option) the grey Funk researchers are a little angry at the royal fam (I mean they left them so it’s a valid response) but they do forgive them on account of why they left (I’m going to say bird attack that forced them to get out of there quickly) and the fact they went back for them🥹 (the fam still does whatever to help like, making therapy a way bigger thing on the ship for others ) they also help the other grey funk trolls get accustomed to the ship and being around more trolls.
Classical: Trollzart would immediately put into action more ways for Symphony Ville to be more accessible for trolls who can’t fly, while also putting in ways for the classical trolls to get around more (I imagine they use walking cane or some form of wheelchairs to get around because like they have the bodies of literal BABIES?!?! Can they even walk on their own?!?) As for the other grey trolls they try to get accustomed to them, maybe put on performances where they show their sorrow and anguish, but also try their best to help them however they can.
Country: Oh boy… Delta is absolutely mortified by her actions. Not only did she kick out a couple of trolls from the flats (sooo much guilt) but they had kids while they were out there, kids who had to survive in the forest for years !!!( I hc that she absolutely loves kids!!) she tried her best to make what she did right (she’s been feeling guilty about it for years) the banished country trolls themselves hold a lot of resentment towards her. I mean who wouldn’t for what she did to them, but after months of holding the grudge and resentment and many many constant apologies and acts of kindness they eventually forgive Delta (there is still awkward tension between the three but they try to put it aside) Delta does absolutely whatever to fawn and show the kids love and kindness since she feels guilty about her being the reason they were grey to begin with. She also helps the other grey country trolls who either went too far away from the flats or got dragged away by predators and got lost cause of it. She tries her best to make amends for all the country trolls and their young. Now she tries to keep track of her people more and has grown a tolerance to all music. The grey trolls greatly appreciate all she does for them and their kids now. (I know I made Delta look like a bad person but this was in the past and to be fair she did lock up Poppy and Branch when she first met them sooooo… I do really love Delta though)
Rock: Barb was angered by the fact some of her people were in the forest surviving for years and grey!??!!! (She seems to be really insecure about being a leader this issue does not help her) she places a lot of guilt on herself because of this and does WHATEVER it takes to make things right!! So she implements a lot of mental health things (more therapy, rage rooms concerts about mental health) anything to bring awareness and to help. For the one deaf rock troll they go immediately to the funk trolls and soon enough hearing aids were made for the little rocker (by the way the deaf troll is like 8, i thought it would make it more angsty that a child left because they felt out of place.. and I was right!!! it makes it sooo much worse) Barb and the rock trolls basically bend over backwards to help their fellow rockers. The grey rockers greatly appreciate what has been done for them and how they got used to their survivalist antics.

As a very very late Valentine's treat while I lay snug in my bed, here's some various Chai headcanons, basic and in a relationship.
Tumblr media
GENERAL
ADHD and dyslexia, this boy did NOT do well in school at any point in his life. He was the kind of kid in class who would get the teacher going on a tangent so they'd forget you had an essay to turn in.
Class clown that everybody liked, but nobody was actually friends with. Everyone looks back in their high school yearbook and remembers some silly stunt Chai pulled, but he never really had his own circle of friends.
Listens to classic and modern rock, punk, thrash metal, hip hop, new wave, and techno. He likes a lot of kinds of music, but his favorite is always something he can bop his head along to, something with an infectious rhythm.
Never blow-drys his hair after getting out of the shower; He prefers to drip-dry.
His biggest intangible fear is being abandoned, especially by the people he cares most about. His biggest tangible fear is dolphins. ("They're so aggressive! And what for? Way too smart and way too mean. Did you know they punt sharks into the air for fun?")
Likes spicy food, but has absolutely no tolerance for it. He'll be beet red, hunched over the table, sweat dripping down his face over a mildly-spicy curry. He's got a bit of a sweet tooth too, he just loves to snack in general.
RELATIONSHIP
Chai's type is someone who he can joke around and have fun with, but also helps keep him grounded when it's important. He loves to have a partner who he can goof off with, but he needs them to have a solid head on their shoulders too, to know when to reel him in a bit. And, of course, you've gotta be able to talk music with him.
Once he realizes he has a crush he becomes a complete and utter mess, barely able to string a sentence together around the person he likes. It's painfully obvious to everyone, including himself, but something about just being around them turns his brain into complete mush. It doesn't help that he's pale and blushes very easily.
Once he's in a relationship though, it's straight back to goofball mode. Chai's a super fun, goofy, go-with-the-flow boyfriend who loves to make you smile and laugh, even if it's at his own expense. Of course, he'd much prefer if you saw him acting cool, but he'll take what he can get.
Simultaneously the most forgetful and the most sweet partner. He's terrible remembering dates and times and important events, but he always remembers your favorite song or your preferred take-out order without ever having to ask.
He loves to learn the songs you like on guitar just to impress you, even if they're really difficult. He's still in the early learning phase so nothing with super complicated fingering or riffs, but he'll buckle down and drill the chord progression of your favorite love song into his own head just to woo you with it later.
Total cuddlebug, Chai's personal space is your personal space and (as long as you're okay with it) your personal space is his. His favorite thing to do with you is a game he calls "Going Boneless" where he drapes himself over you and goes completely limp, often times dragging you straight to the ground with him in a messy heap. He has no problems weaseling right up into your space or you weaseling into his, cramming himself into a recliner with you or letting you tuck your head right under his arm while he's practicing.

My headcanons as to what music the beta trolls like!
ARADIA: I had to think pretty hard about this one since I don't think about Aradia all that much, but I think she would listen to alternative rock... I'm thinking stuff like Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters. TAVROS: I think he would be into like two really different genres and nothing else. Like he'd be into ambient and breakcore and absolutely nothing else. Alternatively I think he would like video game soundtracks! SOLLUX: I honestly don't think Sollux would really be into music. Considering all the voices and stuff I think he would savor every moment of silence available. KARKAT: Tbh I think he would say he's into metal to seem more hardcore but secretly be into pop. I can totally see him listening to Britney Spears lmao. NEPETA: Digital hardcore, IDM, breakcore, techno... she would be all about that electronica shit!!! I think she would initially be really into animation meme music and then branch out into electronic from there! Alternatively, I can see her being into vocaloid!! KANAYA: I think she would like a lot of classical, but specifically orchestral with an emphasis on cello! I think she would appreciate the beauty and detail of the instrument itself. TEREZI: She would totally be into weird loud experimental shit. The kind of music you listen to and come out confused and with a bit of a headache. Stuff like KFC Murder Chicks, Xanopticon, and some Machine Girl would totally be up her alley! VRISKA: I know this is a common take, but I think she would be into pop-punk and grunge. She would be a huge fan of Avril Lavigne for sure! EQUIUS: Not many thoughts since I'm not a huge Equius enjoyer, but I think he'd take interest in nature ambient type stuff... not super musical but more environmental! GAMZEE: I'm not gonna say he would be into ICP because that's dumb and obvious. I think he would take interest in chiptune and bitcrush type stuff, the type that really scratches your brain. ERIDAN: He would be one of those music elitists that only listens to incredibly niche indie rock type stuff and then makes fun of you for not knowing about it. FEFERI: I think she would be the complete opposite of Karkat. She would pretend to listen to pop but actually listen to death metal on full volume. tysm for reading my ramblings have a good day :3

Ok, so I have another set of questions about the world, particularly about the Cultural differences between Porphyal and Atomata.
1. What is the traditional look/outfits of each kingdom? Do they have specific colors? Accessories? Textile decorations?
2. What is the architecture like? What does it look like? What materials are used?
3. Is there any traditional music for each kingdom? (Lol I just pictured techno being played in Atomata for all occasions, I apologize for my immaturity)
4. What is the main language that is spoken in each kingdom? Do they have other dialects?
5. I imagine they have spies during the war that get intel for the kingdoms, but do they have any citizens that are genuinely invested in the other culture? Like, citizens that would love to go visit and write books about what they learned? Obviously they can’t because war, but maybe they have libraries with information?
6. What traditional festivities do they have that the other culture may find confusing or maybe be blown away by it if relations were better?
7. What urban legends do they have? Or traditional cautionary tales? Stories children or young bots are told during bedtime/charge time?
8. What are the schools like or rather how does each culture handle education?
9. What would you say is one of the coolest thing about each culture you really like?
10. Is there a tradition Sun, Moon, Pry/ncess dislike/love about their culture?
I hope these aren’t too many questions… 😅
Never too many questions! 1. In general, I lean towards whatever looks coolest/most interesting, but its really just fantasy medieval clothing. However I will say that Atomatan clothing leans far more colourful with big shapes and styles, while Porphyal leans more into subtle textures and practicality
2. For porphyal, classic medieval architecture! For Atomata, classic medieval architecture with a TWIST that it all looks like sets for a childrens tv show! I have a pinterest board here with some examples! Atomata: https://www.pinterest.ca/strawbubbysugar/atomata/ Porphyal: https://www.pinterest.ca/strawbubbysugar/porphyal/
3. Porphyal enjoys a classic lute, while Atomatan instruments mimic human ones, but sound like chiptunes/8bit music! Like this!
4. its just "common", like dnd, so as not to single it out as being english for people who read in other languages :) There are def dialects, for animatronics their dialects mimic humans but they also have varying levels of echo/static to their voices. Older models tend to have far more echo
5. Of course! Both sides have citizens that are just normal people, and want to see the war end!
6. Animatronics know all about the human world's holidays/festivities, but they all are shifted ever so slightly. Humans know little to nothing about animatronic festivities, thanks to the level of information control in porphyal
7. Humans have an urban legend of "The Mangle", an animatronic that steals people from their beds and twists their bodies into something unrecognizable. Animatronics have an urban legend about a purple man, but it differs so widely from person to person, there isnt a consensus on how the story goes
8. Simple schooling for humans, small villages usually have one person that teaches children in the same class regardless of age, simple stuff like reading & writing, maybe a small bit of math, and some history. Animatronics have basic knowledge downloaded into them at birth, and if they want more knowledge they need to seek it out themselves
9. Ooo good question! I love that human beings are practically built to create, and any human can make art if given the tools and time to do so. I love that animatronics use kindness and compassion as a staple of daily life, with being anything else an outlier
10. Sun loves animatronic kindness and willingness to share, but he hates how hard it is for them to step outside their comfort zone. Moon loves the ease of access to knowledge, but hates that kindness is expected when it is not earned. Pry/ncess has a hard time feeling any particular way about anything in porphyal. Theyre a little bottled up about those feelings.

Hi Lenn! According to you, who would each DR69 and DR96 character listen to (musically speaking)? Who would be their favourite artist/favourite song? (just a silly question to distract me from chapter 4) (you guys need to pay my therapy/j)
Btw, thanks a lot, both to you and Rexx, for everything you do for the fic! I love your writing and also the amazing art!🫠❤️ We’ll patiently wait for chapter 5, but I’m sure it will be FANTASTIC, as always🥹 love ya🫶🏻
It’s funny how I received two similar music asks in a row, but because this one is actually a different question on the topic, I can answer this one separately!
However, since even the last music post had me in agony (/j), I don’t think I’m going to go through every single character’s individual favourite song and artist, and moreso just their music taste (especially since some characters would canonically listen to music from cultures or genres I don’t listen to or know much about myself).
DR96
Hayasaka - most people would say classical, but my big brain (/lh) has bestowed the headcanon ever: vocaloid. I think it would be funny if this man had a secret love for the music, walking to work listening to the most depressing or cutesy song known to Earth. His favourite producer would probably be wowaka (rip) or 40mp.
Kurumada - that kind of grunge, heavy beat, but sort of depressing music? Not trap per say, but like r&b and rap. Or whatever is playing at the gym at the time, sometimes a song will get added to his workout playlist if it sounds good enough.
Mai - she’s that kind of pop girl, but also likes some more sombre songs here and there. Definitely indulges in songs with playful and or sensual lyrics.
Walter - (this is where my disclosure starts to show) Like classic, 50-80s songs. Jazz and blues, or something he can sing along to on the radio.
Jesse - hip-hop, trap, some heavy metal, rock, techno and house music. Anything with a stanky-ass beat (/lh) and Jesse will probably listen to it.
Saiki - I’ve given him the headcanon that he listens to hyperpop, speedcore and breakcore. I got the idea from another tumblr post that said he’d use loud, scratchy music to try and block out the thoughts of other people. It’s implied that’s what he was listening to during chapter 3 as well!
Kaidou - what we all listened to when we were 13 and wanted to be edgy. Also fandom songs (I know this isn’t nationally accurate unless there are hardcore jp fandom song fans lol), and video game OSTs that make him feel powerful.
Retsuko - heavy metal, obviously. But, I think she also likes pop and idol music, considering her history with that, hehe
Natsuki - vocaloid hardcore to the max (some favourite producers be like deco*27 and syudou). Also J-pop/idol music (and some video game OSTs).
Yuri - now I think she would like some classical music, considering her whole elegant aesthetic. I think she’d personally like piano and violin arrangements though, since they are relaxing to listen to while reading. I think she would be convinced to listen to some J-pop after Natsuki begs encourages her.
Hiroshi - he would be a classical guy too, but he would also enjoy some video game OSTs (since he’s kind of a certified gamer if you consider the novels and that chibi anime thingy).
Brian - anything past 1996 would be periodically inaccurate, but I feel like he’s the type of guy who’d try to listen to anything if someone recommended it to him. I think he’d enjoy new-age, or something relaxing on par with the vibes of his game’s OST (synth… rock? I’m not a genres expert).
Bojack - it’s either something really depressing or really sexual and there is just that scale and nothing else
Latte - canonically, folk and symphony since I think that’s the sort of music Parfaedia has. Although, she’d also listen to jazz and dance (she that type of teacher to play music in class all the students try to grin and bare because no one listens to it anymore /lh)
L - whatever music is scientifically proven to enhance focus. Classical? Some jazz? I feel like L likes to work in silence, but with music on the bare occasion.
Ena - something that we would not be able to comprehend if we heard it. Lyrics that sound like 14 different languages all mashed up together. Instruments that shouldn’t exist. Voices that shouldn’t exist. The same song that runs for 4 minutes on the first play, 15 seconds on the second, and 2 hours on the third. Or just webcore/weirdcore instrumental music lmao
DR69
Luigi - calm jazz and swing, I also think he be into acoustic arrangements.
Mario - I think he’d listen to energetic music to get himself pumped up. But also enjoys the folk music of the mushroom kingdom.
Peter - I would say 50-90s songs, ranging from classic hits to goofy ass songs (like the Rock Lobster bit)
Brian - I think he’s into ska, jazz, and blues. Also very pretentious with his music taste lol
Miku - Pop, dance, techno and electronica are her mains, but she can dabble into any genre. Likes to support and listen to her other fellow voice synth’s music.
Teto - rock, but also some dance/pop. Secretly enjoys listening to Miku’s songs (as long as she’s not around)
Nagito - nicher artists of alt and synth. I don’t think he’d be into mainstream music. Also depressing lyrics are his go-to lol
Sans - ironically, the stankiest beat you’ve ever heard and penis music (rubber band). Unironically, some smooth tunes akin to Nastablook’s music taste.
Parappa - rap, hip-hop, r&b and dance. Could unironically make a great rap over the instrumentals of ‘A Pimp Named Slickback’.
Fluttershy - Equestria folk music, acapella and that musical-type genre they have in the show’s music.
Ayano - whatever her Senpai is listening to. So, I would assume the latest trending J-pop mostly.
Ashley - rock and alt. Emo type beat. Mainly female vocals. One or two heavy metal songs. Any other warioware cast member will die upon listening to any of it lol
2D - his favourite band is canonically The Human League, so other new wave and synth-pop stuff too.
Mr. Krabs - sea shanties, unironically. He probably sang a lot of them while on the navy.
Dedede - (I have no Kirby lore but I must scream) I feel like he’d play classical music in his castle to give off those regal king vibes. But he’d also enjoy energetic music like his boss battle themes.
The Conductor - western and western movie soundtracks. Also some smooth jazz and soul. I like to think he likes the sounds of the piano the most, from the ‘heart to heart’ OST
Also, TYSM for the lovely words!! I’m so happy to hear how much you’ve enjoyed the fic so far! 😭❤️

Part 1: Ary's favourite releases of 2023
Before you ask, yes I know that Mitski and Sufjan Stevens released albums this year! I'm gonna go ahead and assume they're already on a lot of other people's lists! However, if you think I'm missing out on YOUR favourite album of 2023, let me know. If you're thinking: "63 albums isn't that many, I wish there were more" - you're in luck because there's a Part 2. Part 2 has a different (more pop? upbeat? accessible?) vibe. Don't think too hard about it...
The chart isn't ranked, just arranged in a way that looked nice to me. Metal, hardcore, rap, emo, skramz, bedroom pop and more!!!

Jen Tortures Herself With Every Dreamworks Animated Movie Ever: Trolls World Tour
Tumblr media
So I'm learning more and more that the Trolls franchise is not what I was led to believe for such a long time now. Because I really did actually like the first one a good bit. So how does its sequel hold up? Well...
Tumblr media
We once again follow Poppy and Branch, this time on a quest to stop Barb, the Queen of the Rock Trolls, from stealing the six strings that create all music types in the world of the Trolls (Rock, Pop, Funk, Classical, Techno, and Country). Barb's plan is to unite all Trolls under Rock exclusively, so its up to Poppy (who is struggling to learn what it means to be a good queen) and Branch (who's struggling to confess his feelings for Poppy) to save the day.
Tumblr media
Yeah, pretty simple, very "questy" premise here, kinda feels like the structure of a video game in a weird way? Like our crew rolls into the various territories of the other Troll tribes and we get to see a little taste of who they are and how they live but none of it is really that in-depth, which is... fine, I guess, whatever. There are certainly some... interesting themes they're trying to get across here, like historical rivisionism and even overcoming racism??? I think?? But of course, because this is a kids movie, its all very simplified into "we're all different and that's ok!" because well, they're not gonna make it that complicated for the little kiddo brains this is clearly targeted for.
Tumblr media
As a result, we get a much simpler movie than even the last one, which was already pretty simple. The characters from last time around are all pretty much the same as before, Poppy is still upbeat and eternally positive (though her arc here is pretty satisfying of her learning to listen to others and that she doesn't know best all the time), Branch is still The Best Character in this goddamn franchise, the side characters are all just... there. And as for our new characters, none of them really stood out that much except for Barb. She's a pretty fun villain! Very punk rocker, very sassy and sharp, and she even gets a few good moments to give her depth by the end and make you ok with her eventual redemption. She's cool.
Tumblr media
The music is a little more varried this time around too, because well, it has to be given this movie's premise. So we get some tastes of country and funk and rock alongside the usual pop, which is still the most prominent genre for sure. There are even hints of classical, raggae, even goddamn k-pop because lord. Though I will admit, when they started singing Gangnam Style I think I lost about three years off my life jesus christ.
Tumblr media
The visuals are just as lovely as the last though, dedicating itself to an even more arst and crafts asthetic than the last. The homes of all of the other types of trolls are really fun and varied and fit nicely with the style of music they're trying to embrace. There's nothing too fantastic going on here with the animation, but its still very nice to look at all the same.
So yeah, Trolls World Tour is... fine. It's perfectly watchable, just like its predecessor was. I would dare to call it mid, which explains the score I give it below, I guess. It just... exists. And that's all I can really say about it.
Overall Rating: 5/10
Verdict: WHERE THE FUCK WERE YOU TWO ALL MOVIE?!?!?!?!

ALL WIRED UP - a playlist
assimilate this! (exquisite technological mix)
WELL WELL WELL. I haven’t put together a playlist for a month or so, and it’s time. Also haven’t shared many of them here, I don’t think. We will be welcoming Virgo season in with a focus on robot rock, Borg perfection, wired up to the max, a playlist for all you machines and machine-lovers out there.
The Man Machine - Live
Kraftwerk
I was fortunate enough to see Kraftwerk twice in 2014; it was a religious experience. I saw them perform this album, 1978’s The Man Machine in its full entirety. Despite being a huge fan, I wasn’t expecting much. “How cool could it possibly be?” I, a fool, asked myself as I walked into Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA. I knew they were going to be standing in front of their trademark podiums pressing buttons. What I didn’t know was how that was going to make me feel. I love the crowd coming in at 0:26 when the beat starts, and again at 0:59, which is when I must assume that the curtain fell to reveal The Robots. If you don’t know this entire album, you haven’t yet lived. Please listen to all of it.
Electricity
Midnight Star
“You got my head all wired up”
This was the start of this mix; it was the root my working Data/Geordi fan mix for forever, aka the “DaForge” mix to those of us with excellent taste. You may recognize Midnight Star from “No Parking On The Dance Floor,” their entire catalog is full of funky computer hits.
Human Being
Jane Inc.
“Accentuate my structure”
A quite hard synth and light drums anchor this track, which came across as a lovely surprise in some of my explorations for this playlist.
Get A Little
Patrick Cowley
Yes, this song has been on a few of my past mixes, including last month’s. To that I say, mind your business and get your ass on the dance floor. Patrick Cowley may be most known for his production work with San Francisco dance legend Sylvester (You Make Me Feel, etc.), but his solo work stands on its own as manual/physical synth excellence. Cowley died of AIDS in 1982, another bright light stolen from us.
Faster Than The Speed Of Love
Georgio Moroder
No synth-heavy mix is complete without the Italian stallion of synth, the techno-grandfather himself. Sorry about the poor transition but this entire album is a flow worth experiencing in full.
Desire
Future World Orchestra
If you’ve ever wanted to see a 1980’s track suit dripped out cartoon-looking white guy from the Netherlands playing about $70,000 worth of synthesizers, look this video up on YouTube. Big thanks to the Pop Overbite TikTok account for helping me discover this duo.
10 Out Of 10 (feat. Kylie Minogue)
Oliver Heldens, Kylie Minogue
Continuum music lovers and long time Kylie fans rejoice; we have less than a month before we get an entire new record. Biting my hands waiting for TENSION, which is out on September 22nd. Love the timeless-yet-90’s feel of this soon to be classic.
Get On Up And Do It Again
Suzy Q
No clue the story of this band (I believe they’re Canadian?) but this one’s been on my “get it going” playlist for a while
Lovelife
Phoenix
Always been a fan of Phoenix, especially when they get back to their synth roots. I don’t think this album (Ti Amo) had a major hit off it, certainly nothing like 2009’s ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix,’ which is unfortunate as there are some fantastic sounds on here.
I’ve Got Your Image
Cameo
This was sampled by Queen Latifah’s 2003 ‘Better Than The Rest.’ The titular line made me think of Seven’s eidetic memory, and it was time for a slow jam.
She Blinded Me With Science
Thomas Dolby
No relation to Dolby sound systems, but there may as well be with this 1982 classic that remains unlike anything else. Check out the video if you’re not familiar.
Data
Shook
I’m not terribly familiar with this artist, who’s based in the Netherlands, but the way he handles a synth works for me.
The Robots - 2009 Remaster
Kraftwerk
Again, I will point out that this album was released in 1978. The live version of this song also hits hard, if you’re so inclined to check out any of Kraftwerk’s live work.
You Are In My System
The System
Smooth techno robot funk, just the way I like it. No recollection of how I came across this hit other than the algorithm recognizing my exquisite taste.
Phantom
Justice
If Daft Punk is the robot rock dressed up on the dance floor, Justice is what you get at 3am after everyone is either wasted or high out of their mind, finding a way (any way!) to keep the party going. Never before or since have I encountered a record that scratched this particular sonic itch for dirtied up, fuzzed out synths continuing to deliver danceable, on the beat hits. If Daft Punk’s “Discovery” plugged us in, 2007’s “Justice” stripped our wires and started sparking them together. Ugh. I could go on about how much I love this record for a very long time.
Work Out Tonight
Ultraflex
I don’t have much to say about this Norwegian/Icelandic duo, other than keep party rocking, y’all.
Gettin’ To The Good Part
Herbie Hancock
What do you say about a legend whose work spans multiple genres, executed flawlessly? Not much, but 1980’s Herbie Hancock showcases his ability to seamlessly fit in with any and all new trends. You know more of his work than you think you do through samples and film, but you can always get to know him better.
Start Computer
Shook
It’s not very often that I hear a song that takes me back to the ebullient joy I felt in 2001 upon hearing Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery’ in full for the first time, but this song touches the vocoder-loving places within me.
Luminescent
Poppy Baskcomb
Baskcomb hails from the UK and I look forward to digging more into her work. Always a fan when a pop song chooses to anchor itself around an uncommon word.
Night Cruiser
Deodato
There seem to be a few different Deodatos but I’m assuming this is the Brazilian musical artist, as I hear those influences present here. Unsurprisingly, a great tune to jam around in your car at night, pretending you’re in a cyberpunk movie.
Master Rocker
Bernard Wright
This album is an instant classic, funky in all the right ways, with a touch of technological that anchors it firmly in time and place.
Sometimes
Les Rythmes Digitales
Don’t have much information about this 1999 album, but I would believe if you told me it was either from much earlier or much later. Always been a fan of music that is both faithful enough and innovative enough to be placed in any time period.
One More Time / Aerodynamic (live)
Daft Punk
My robot boys. If they ever return from retirement, bet that I will be spending my life savings and then some to see Daft Punk live. I have been a Daft Punk fan since 2001, and I am so grateful to exist at the same time as this duo. Listening to Discovery when it came out is an experience in time that I will never forget. I had tried to listen to this album when it came out, but I wasn’t yet advanced enough in my music appreciation to enjoy them live. The first time I heard the transition between songs, every hair on my body stood on end. I want few things more than a Daft Punk reunion tour, but this and bootlegs will have to suffice for now.
Messages From The Stars - Sped Up
The Rah Band
First encountered this song in a twitter exchange about DaForge; it’s not often that a song sounds just as good sped up as it does in the original speed.
Nobody But You
The Apples In Stereo
The first time I heard this song, I was working at Nordstrom, where you could call the operator (even as an employee) and ask for them to tell you the song. The swooping ‘you’s’ at the end are what spurred me into action. I wrote down the name of this song on a pastry bag, and this album has not left me since. It is a warm hug from outer space.
Translight
Breakbot
Eagerly awaiting a new album from Breakbot like any day now. The instrumentals remain undefeated.
Chaos - Laura van Dam Remix
Andrew Bayer, Run Rivers, Laura van Dam
I’m not terribly familiar with anyone here, but this song is a great way to draw me in to a lovely, sonically spacious and danceable remix.
Spotlight
Kylie Minogue
Heartbroken that there isn’t an extended mix of this yet (the DISCO extended mixes are still worth checking out), as it remains one of my favorite tracks from 2020’s incredible DISCO. Only the queen of pop could record an album like this in quarantine. Legends only!!!!
You Put A Charge In My Life
Brainstorm
Whoever makes me a fan vid of Geordi and Data being ‘very close friends’ to this is gonna eventually get a giant hug and possibly (okay, definitely) dinner. No clue what’s happening on the cover, but who doesn’t want to love an alien? Please be for real.
One Hot Love - 2018 Remaster
Makoto Matsushita
I knew nothing of Japanese City Pop until my Spotify started feeding it to me, and I’ve become obsessed with these oh-so-smooth tracks that remain danceable and sharp. A true mood, a vibe, a way to turn around any bad day.
Messages From The Stars
The Rah Band
And to close out the mix, enjoy the song in all its 1980s synthed out, original speed glory, still grooving and moving, a hit in either tempo.
That’s the mix, enjoy! Keep robot rocking and technological trancing🤖

My favorite Alt-Rock artists (Part 2)
To counteract my last post of dark styled music I will share to all of you my favorite artists that make me feel happy and I struggle to not sing along with. When I listen to this style I am usually listening for the rhythm of the song and not entirely the deep meanings of the lyrics. This type of music is normally generalized into indie rock, which is by far the most common version of modern Alt-Rock. I will also stay away from the more mainstream bands that everyone knows so I could maybe show something you haven’t heard of before.
Tumblr media
First of all is the band that I have recently become very addicted to a couple of their songs, which is Mt. Joy. They often sing about hippy type topics like drugs and religion and being overall positive about everything. But, they aren’t just some random hippy group, they have a way with rhythm that I have never heard from another artist of the same genre. Take Astrovan for example, it was one of their first songs to the debut album, and in my opinion it encapsulates the energy of Mt. Joy perfectly. It’s framed in a way where it feels very cinematic and very coherent to follow along with the lyrics as you are living out the moment with it. Matt Quinn said during one of his first interviews that “I really like to write songs in a cinematic way, the hope being to really establish a sense of place so that people can see/feel what I’m saying.” (Birp interview, birp.fm). Altogether, the rhythm and style of their songs have piqued my interest in particular and I will never skip one of their songs when it comes on. I would easily rate this band 8.5/10, it’s not a ten because I find their later releases lack the same energy as when they initially released.
youtube
Next is a bit more of old style indie rock that is actually a duo which gives them more character in their songs and I give them more props for their songs then I normally would, they are The Black Keys. They use more classic instruments like guitars, bass and drums, with techno bits here and there. This really grounds itself in its uniqueness from the rest of the genre and creates a bridge between old rock and the very technology enhanced modern indie rock. Dan Auerbach has such unique vocals that really centralize with the instruments and add to the older feel of their music. But the rhythm of everything is entirely modernized which feels super refreshing in all the same sounding rock bands. There are two songs I want to mention from them, those being Lonely Boy and Gold on the Ceiling. The first is all about the lyrics, whenever i hear it come on I instinctively feel the need to sing along, it’s super catchy and simple so anyone can learn the lyrics and sing with it. The instrumental is just as simple so as to not distract from the words, but it compliments them perfectly like having a spotlight on the actor of a play. The combination of the two elements created a double Grammy winning song and an all time classic for me, also by far my favourite music video ever. The latter of the two, Gold on the Ceiling, is for me a demonstration of their instrumental skills. I find that these lyrics don’t hit nearly as hard as Lonely Boy, but that is so the guitar riffs can have their time to shine. There are many more guitar solos in this song then all of their songs and it shows the prowess in Dan’s skill to pluck at strings in a way that makes the ears dance. For me personally this band deserves nothing less than a 10/10 and If I were to put them in a tier list they would definitely be in my top 3.

MIDNIGHTS REVIEW - song impressions
By Hannah
Lavender Haze - LOVE! Great intro track.
Maroon - gorgeous
Anti-Hero - duh. Very fun. A classic single (that wasn’t even a single)
Snow on the Beach - very pretty and ethereal like Lana but so disappointed that she didn’t have a verse. I can’t even hear her in the background 😭 I wanted a Nothing New type song with her.
You’re on your own kid - great bridge
Vigilante Shit needed a more intense bridge. It all stays on one level and kinda disappoints
Bejeweled is so shimmery and fun! Very 1989 vibes
Love her voice in Labyrinth. Techno vibes.
KARMA! Finally a song where the music is more than just in the background! Can’t help but dance to this one. Love.
Sweet Nothing. I want to squeeze it it’s so cute!! “It’s nice to have a friend”’s sister. My underrated fave. 🥰
Mastermind. I like the lyrics. Good chorus.
Great War - Good beat on the chorus
Bigger Than The Whole Sky - Lover vibes. Sounds like lost love. Beautiful. What’s up with the chorus saying “could’ve would’ve should’ve” and then 4 songs later there’s a song titled that?
Paris. Sweet and cute lyrics.
High Fidelity kept sounding like some of her other songs to me at times! Still like it though. “You know there’s many different ways to kill the one you love. Slowest way is not loving them enough” ugh. Classic tragic Taylor lyrics. Love.
Glitch. It’s okay. Could live without it.
Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve. I like the music in this one - rhythm reminds me of Folklore. Tragic lyrics.
Dear Reader. Good. Nothing to “write” home about 😜😜 get it?
8.5/10

I HAVE TO SEND YOU SOME AS THANKS FOR MAKING A KICKASS ASK GAME, okay; Double Life, Chippin' In, and Queen of the Highway :Dc
HIII THANK YOU!!!
I answered Double Life over here, but Ash is a former street kid turned tattoo artist!
She arrived to Night City when she was fairly young, so she spent many years making a name for herself as both a criminal and a mercenary. She may be old, but she's not dead yet, so you won't be finding any drinks in her honor at The Afterlife. Claire does know her order though. Ash may not be a merc anymore, but it's always good to have connections. Never know when you'll need 'em!
Chippin' In: Out of the in-game radio stations, what's your S/I's favorite radio station? In general, what kind of music do they like? Do they stay up to date with new tracks or do they like the classics?
89.7 GROWL FM BABY!!!!! And I'm not just saying that because the DJ is also named Ash. It's my favorite radio station, and that definitely extends to my S/I too.
It has all kinds of songs in it of so many different genres. It's totally unpredictable. Just like Ash! Ash likes music that she can get lost in, but she's also quite old. Being in her 70s, Ash has a soft spot for the classics, rock and techno from the 10s and 20s. That being said, she's very open to new music. Night City is a real shitshow of a place, so it makes her happy to see that at least the passion and soul of its people live on through its music. That's one thing corporations can't take away.
Queen of the Highway: What's your S/I's preferred form of transportation? Do they have a sweet ride that they love to bits and pieces, or a tired ol' ride that's barely hanging out? Or none of those at all and prefer the metro or just going on foot?
Back when Ash was a merc, she had this motorcycle that she absolutely adored. That old guy has taken her through the Badlands and across Night City thousands of times. It's rough and it's beat-up now, but Ash still has it! Part of me wants it to be an unlockable item for V, but the other part of me feels like Ash wouldn't want them trashing her precious! V already gets her gun as a quest item!
But these days, she doesn't ride that bike around too often. Only if she's heading to the Badlands for some reason or some really big shit went down is when she'll hop on her old ride. These days, though, she's really only leaving the Clinic to grocery shop or go to her place or go see V. She's not driving around with the intention of flatlining gonks anymore!
Because of that, she tends to just like walking or taking the metro. She also gets to people-watch that way, and that's a hobby she quite enjoys. That being said, in her sidequest, there's a scene where she drives you around in her car! Despite having plenty of eddies, her car is nothing fancy. It's fairly simple and a little old, but still drives just fun.
All in all, Ash isn't too nuts about her rides. Her beloved motorcycle that served as her loyal steed back in her merc days doesn't see too much action anymore, but maybe that's for the best. She has a car she drives around whenever she needs to drive long distances for more casual things (like the Beat in the Brat sidequest! You see her with Vik there in the last match!), but she's not against taking the metro or just walking sometimes.
Her job doesn't involve a lot of traveling, so she has no need for super fancy vehicles! She has them and uses them when she has to, but there's a certain charm to walking around in Night City. For a place called Night City, it never seems to sleep. It's a shitty place, but it's her shitty place.

2023 BEST
+ ALBUM
Bottoms - Charli XCX. I don't know if a movie's score counts as an album, but this is the easy winner.
Fantasy - M83. I still can't get over Oceans Niagara and the music video. Beyond adventure, indeed.
The Whaler - Home is Where.
Javelin - Sufjan Stevens.
+ SONG
Jeff Rosenstock - LIKED U BETTER.
Afroman - Will You Help Me Repair My Door. The song is generally mid, but the background story behind it makes it amazing.
+ RECORD / COVER
I listened to too many mixes and sets without paying attention to records this year. I've got nothing.
+ SET/MIX/SHOW
Black Country, New Road - Live at Bush Hall. CLASS OF 81', LISTEN TO YOUR PROM KING!!! FUCK THE DEAN!!!
Chlär | Boiler Room x Glitch Festival 2023. This dude is changing techno in a big way. Loops loops loops lopps lopsodfpsopsofpsoo spooop loops.
LDS - HATE Podcast 340.
Pretty Pink - Deep Woods Radio. Girl was on point all year. There's probably better deep trance/house than this, but I'm too lazy to find it and this easily made me happy.
+ MOVIE
Talk to Me. Nothing comes close. This movie is perfection. Foreshadowing, details, subtely, so many layers, so much to think about. It's like Starship Troopers in that it's only a a dumb action / scary movie on first glance, but then you realize all the hidden meaning to it there in every scene.
Bottoms.
Nimona.
Killers of the Flower Moon.
Godzilla Minus One.
Stuff I loved, but only got to in 2023: Okja, The Wailing, Shiva Baby.
Long list piling up I haven't got to yet: Holdovers, Ninja Turtles, Smoking Causes Coughing, She Came to Be, 65, Infinity Pool, Past Lives, Suzume, Mad God, Saltburn, The Boy and the Heron, Argentina 1985, Close, Stars End, Hundreds of Beavers, Joyland, Fabelmans, Challengers.
+ TV SHOW
Vox Machina s2. Easy winner. Nothing else comes close. This is so good. They could and should just push s1 and s2 together seamlessly and release it all as a movie.
Foundation s1. This whole thing is gorgeously shot. Whoever did the storyboard / director of photography is brilliant.
Station Eleven
The Mole
Traitors AUS
SWARM. Before watching I wish someone would have told me the soft spoiler that she's a confused lesbian and the orphaned sister of her friend. It would have helped me understand/get past what were mistakenly viewed as gross and cringe scenes.
Last of US
Snake in the Grass
Y The Last Man. I liked it better than the books simply because the sister's story arc is more believeable and enjoyable. Really sad s2 isn't going to be a thing.
+ VIDEO GAME
Baldur's Gate 3. It's more Div Sin 5e than BG3, but still a phenomenal game. Organizing things by: action, bonus action, and free action has been a wild ephiphany and game changer for me at D&D night.
Dead by Daylight. Another year, another me. No change there. Nicolas Cage, Xenomorph, Ripley, Jonsie, Chucky, the return of Stranger Things… This game just keeps winning. I got burned out in late 2023 and haven't really touched it much since Summer, but this is easily one of the greatest games ever made for me.
WOW Season of Discovery. Injecting WOTLK gameplay systems into Classic? It's so simple and yet so fun.
Going Medieval. As they continue to develop this it's just going to get better and better and better.
+ BOOK
Y The Last Man. Poured through these. Politically… meh. I still liked them.
Book 12 WOT. I also started reading Red Rising becuase I wanted something easy, but that was a mistake because it's too teenage for even me. I also think for 2024 I'm going to switch to standalones and not big 3+ epics because it seriously took me like 2 years to get through WOT and I'm not sure it was worth it.
+ PERSON
Anyone, anywhere who stood out and spoke out against the IOF's genocide in Gaza.
+ FOOD
Butter chicken. Please help me stop eating so much butter chicken I have spent a small fortune at my local indian restaurant buying and eating butter chicken.
+ TRIP
The camping trips this year were fun af, stoked for this upcoming Spring and Summer. Started to get antsy late Summer and started regularly taking daytrips to mid/downtown almost every weekend as well.
+ MOMENT
What a year for US labor. UPS, SAG/WGA, UAW, etc. Syndicalists keep winning.
+ BIGGEST LET DOWN
Fetterman. What an absolute fucking loser. Not "loser" as an insult, but loser as in he lost. His leftist base got him into power, and yet he immediately betrayed them because he's afraid of the DNC+AIPAC and wants to keep his job 5.5 years from now. BITCH YOU HAVE NO FRIENDS. YOUR BASE NOW HATES YOU. AIPAC WILL ALWAYS HATE YOU. THE DNC WILL ALWAYS HATE YOU. YOU SOLD YOUR SOUL FOR GENOCIDE AND GOT CORN CHIPS FOR IT. I absolutely mean it when I say I hope he kills himself.
WOT s2. What the fuck did I even watch what the fuck was that? I know and truly understand adaptation means it can't follow the story, but what was this???? Why did badass women become a bunch of weak fragile pathetic pissy dumbshits who can't do shit????? Fuck this show.
Theme of the year: I don't have a theme. Personally, I had a pretty good year. US Labor had a very, very good year. CPI inflation, Ukraine, and Gaza were fucking horrible. 2023 was strange and mostly terrible.
Goals for 2024: Don't get stuck in a rut. Learn/perfect how to make various indian and thai dishes. Fix my pinball machine. Get 100k+ in DigDug.

It's Linzy's birthday today and what I shall forthrightly and adamantly avoid is to post pictures of when she was a newborn or when she was a kid.
She's 26 years old, for crying out loud. I shoulda stopped doing that more than a decade ago. 😐
I shall also forthrightly and adamantly avoid making today about the missus 'n me. Because, you know, we've got stories. Stories that are still easily accessible right at the tips of our fingers kinds of stories.
I could tell you one right now about the day Linzy was born...
But I'm not gonna.
Instead, I'll point out how we still feel what our twenties were like. And we can very much see through Linzy's eyes what they're like right now.
Tumblr media
In many ways, her twenties and our twenties aren't that different. At the same time, they're nothing like each other. They couldn't be more different.
By which I mean to say that the fundamentals of being a twenty-something haven't changed whilst the environment in which present day twenty-somethings exist is breathtakingly, profoundly different.
Profoundly different.
They're basically living a reboot.
As if the cast of a Western film classic like "High Noon" was reimagined into the middle of a Science Fiction classic like "Blade Runner".
Same people.
Wildly different environment.
And oh yes. They're also living a fiercely different story.
If you don't believe me, God. Just look around. Because this, all around us, is a fiercely different story.
So when we say we're proud of our daughter... it's because we know her story.
From Day 1.
We know her, we know her story, we know the cast of characters who've taken the stage with her (all manner of heroes and villains), and we know the world she's navigating.
And yes.
We remember the twenty-something gig.
So when we say we're proud of her, we say that with the full knowledge of having done the twenty-something gig and recognizing what that's like today. Right now.
This very moment.
With that in mind, we're impressed as hell by her relentless pursuit of her music career. Her dreams. We're impressed by the unimaginable work that goes into being in two successful bands and performing to packed audiences. In fact, by this time next month, one of those bands, The Little Lies, will have performed in front of an arena filled by a crowd of thousands at a Kraken game.
Did not, by the way, see that coming.
Really did not.
Tumblr media
In many ways, we're still her first audience for song demos. At least we like to think we are.
We're probably nine and ten on the list 'cause she's got a lot of friends who are professionals in the local music community.
Aside from those demos, I thoroughly enjoy kicking ideas around with her when it comes to her Dream Patrol brand, the wing of her creativity reserved for the techno/pop/cinematic/layered vibe she does so well. It's also a completely engaging exercise to talk about the difference between one of her songs produced as a Linzy Collins production versus a Dream Patrol production. And then imagining what a live Dream Patrol show looks like.
It's her future actively being written before our very eyes.
You know?
Tumblr media
Linzy's always been a hard worker which, I admit, I hate how that doesn't sound like one of those cool things of which to be proud. But in Linzy's case, from learning to play the piano, the guitar, the clarinet, the trombone, the cello... to interior and exterior house painting to filing to spreadsheets to high-end home cleaning with an agency... to putting bands together to the DIY nature of being a band in the PNW handling everything from songwriting to arranging to producing to recording to sound mixing to cover art to marketing and promoting and rehearsing and rehearsing and...
Rehearsing.
Maybe "hard worker" isn't the way to put it. Maybe "relentless master of her pursuits" works a little better.
Okay. A lot better. 😁
Because while she has the whatever it is people have inside them that keeps then going... she also has the bandwidth, the intellect, the emotional IQ, the verbal skills, the professional vibe, the work ethic, and the sheer creative prowess to prevail at something that was barely a dream once upon a time that's now an actual, paying, honest-to-God career with plenty of success behind her and plenty of room above her to keep reaching ever upward propelled there by her solo work, her band work, her Dream Patrol work, her production and songwriting services, and so on.
All that atop the reality of living in a major urban center, in her twenties, in today's world.
Tumblr media
The challenges are intimidating, of course. I won't lie. They're suffocating, sometimes demoralizing at times. Not just for her but for anyone pursuing the life she's choosing, this passion she's following, this craft she's absolutely mastering alongside the community of professional musicians she calls friends, collaborators, bandmates, and badass gifted artists.
It's a helluva thing to watch, this life she's challenging, this career she's building. And yes yes yes. Of course we're proud. Of course.
But it's also exciting as hell.

My Favorite Albums of 2020, 50-41
50. Drake, Dark Lane Demo Tapes
Tumblr media
Favorite Tracks: Deep Pockets | Chicago Freestyle | Pain 1993
I’ve done a full 360 on Drake: I loved his output through Views, felt lukewarm about More Life, and was fully disappointed in Scorpion. It was simply too easy for Drake to put out bloated records and know he would come out of it with at least two major hits. Early last year I found myself revisiting Nothing Was the Same (imo the best Drake album, sorry Take Care) and wondering if Drake would ever return to the level of quality of his older albums. Dark Lane Demo Tapes, despite being a collection of loosies and snippets, provides Drake’s most cohesive-sounding project since If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. It’s wild to think that a 49-minute album could sound concise, but for Drake standards, it does: each song adds to the late night vibe that Drake popularized in the first place, taking me back to what I enjoyed so much about his earlier work. And so, with a random collection of demos, Drake has somehow reeled me back as a fan.
49. Fennec, Free Us of This Feeling
Tumblr media
Favorite Tracks: Boy-U | Dreemin | Together
This album came out really early in the year, so I must have found it when I was going through a heavy dance/techno/house phase: I’m glad I did, though, because this album is wildly underrated. Utilizing sampling as instrumentation a la The Avalanches, Free Us Of This Feeling is a sonic collage, taking bits from TV shows, video games, movies, nature, and other music (there’s even a sample from The Bachelorette tucked away in the album). The project is still very much a dance album, with my favorite song, “Boy-U,” featuring a bouncy looped sample that I couldn’t get out of my head for days. This is the first album of many where I’ll mention something about hoping to eventually vibe to this album in a Brooklyn club once COVID is over, but yeah, I can’t wait to vibe to this album in a Brooklyn club once COVID is over.
48. Mac Miller, Circles
Tumblr media
Favorite Tracks: Blue World | That’s On Me | Circles
Posthumous albums are always tough, but Circles is an emotional last work from the late rapper Mac Miller. His death was the first that really hit me both in terms of its unexpectedness and because I got into hip-hop around Mac Miller’s era. Circles is a beautiful album stripped down even further from 2019’s Swimming: it provides an empathetic look into the mind of someone trying their best while dealing with depression and anxiety. It’s powerfully touching and at times difficult to listen to due to the circumstances of his death, but given the growing number of people struggling with mental health in the same way Mac did, Circles’ impact is immeasurable.
47. Joji, Nectar

Favorite Tracks: Run | Gimme Love | Reanimator
For some reason I feel like I have to defend my enjoyment of Joji, but I unironically love his music. “SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK” was one of my favorite songs of 2018 and he captures a vibey sadboy angst that I’ve definitely related to in the past. There’s probably some analysis to be had of Asian kids who came up on YouTube post-punk AMVs and whose only contemporary Asian celebrities came in the form of YouTube comedians (anyone remember nigahiga?) growing up to become Joji stans, but I won’t get into it. With Nectar, Joji has evolved musically, working with major producers like Clams Casino and Diplo and guests like Yves Tumor. He sounds genuine on this album, which features more complex lyricism and an expanded vocal range. While some of the songs are forgettable, it’s still a strong release that gets me excited for the sadboy anthems he has in store.
46. Dogleg, Melee

Favorite Tracks: Fox | Wrist | Headfirst
There’s probably not a timeline where I wouldn’t love this album given all of the references to Super Smash Bros. and classic Nintendo games. This album’s hardcore sound works extremely well, delivering a dose of high-octane rock fuel in a mostly played out genre: the tracks sound like a fresh mix of bands like At The Drive In, Deafheaven, and The Strokes. I can imagine any of the songs on the album serving as the next big anime’s opening credits theme, a place where I’m sure Dogleg would feel right at home.
45. Westside Gunn, Pray for Paris
Tumblr media
Favorite Tracks: 327 | Allah Sent Me | George Bondo
Griselda, the rap group that defines themselves on grimy east coast bars that are (weirdly) a radical departure from the currently popular hip-hop today, has captured me since 2018 when I first heard Benny the Butcher’s project The Plugs I Met. With Pray for Paris, Westside Gunn released one of the sharpest iterations of the Griselda sound, infusing braggadocious opulence with his devilish raps (the cover art is also badass). One of my favorite moments on the album is how surprisingly well the Tyler, the Creator feature works on “327,” an admittedly softer side of hip-hop (at least in Tyler’s current form) that I would have never expected to sound so good in Griselda territory.
44. Don Toliver, Heaven or Hell
Tumblr media
Favorite Tracks: After Party | No Idea | Cardigan
I remember first hearing ASTROWORLD’s “CAN’T SAY,” thinking it was Young Thug doing another weird voice thing. Since discovering it was an up-and-coming Houston rapper Don Toliver, I’ve really enjoyed his music and unique trap-singing voice. His early mixtapes became a mainstay of my late-night drunken train rides back to my apartment. It may not be revolutionary, but Heaven and Hell is a worthy debut from Don Toliver, leaning further into the sing-rapping that’s captured the hip-hop zeitgeist and providing woozy hip-hop that’s a fitting companion for both the pre-game bottle and afterparty blunt.
43. Run the Jewels, RTJ4
Tumblr media
Favorite Tracks: walking in the snow | out of sight | JU$T
RTJ4’s politically and racially-charged catharsis was well-needed in 2020, the year when the Trump era reached new peaks of absurdity and fatal racism boiled over into global protests during an international pandemic. Killer Mike and El-P sound as sharp as ever, incisively pointing out the injustices of society with their signature whimsical irony (probably resulting from their Adult Swim origin story). The features are all great, including returning guest Rage Against the Machine-frontman Zack De La Rocha and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age (which reminded me of how much I used to listen to them back in 2013). Protest music hasn’t sounded this good since Rage’s The Battle for Los Angeles.
42. Róisín Murphy, Róisín Machine
Tumblr media
Favorite Tracks: Narcissus | Murphy’s Law | Kingdom of Ends
This is a must-listen for anyone who has ever in their life enjoyed dancing, even a little. The dancepop legend Róisín Murphy has released an hour-long mix of club euphoria that will instantly transport you to better times; I’m inclined to believe that Murphy actually is some sort of disco machine after releasing this album. It’s usually difficult for me to get really taken by music like this unless I’m sweating to it in a warehouse surrounded by other bodies, but Murphy’s ear for addictive grooves is too hard to ignore. It probably helps that my favorite track “Narcissus” sounds right at home on the acid jazz soundtrack of Persona 5 Royal, a video game I spent hundreds of hours playing over quarantine. This is yet another album that I’m impatiently waiting to experience on a dancefloor, an aspirational lighthouse for a post-COVID world.
41. Loma, Don’t Shy Away
Tumblr media
Favorite Tracks: Thorn | Octotillo | Half Silences
I had never heard of Loma before, but found their album Don’t Shy Away through an r/indieheads post. I gave it a cursory listen and was immersed by its atmospheric gloom. The abstract darkness of the album was evocative of the rose in Beauty & the Beast or Maleficent speaking to the magic mirror, whimsical and murky at the same time. The band’s inverted take on indie rock, dark electronic, and even some elements of trip-hop were enough to garner the attention of ambient electronic legend Brian Eno, who’s featured on the final track “Homing.” The whole album is bathed in moonlight, a natural progression for fans of Radiohead’s darker, more downtempo songs. It even served as a big inspiration for a mixtape I curated inspired by the deep introspection that the nighttime brings, which I’ve included below:
