dungeon meshi is soooo fucking great especially when it hits its stride and all characters have come into play bc it's just like
laios: I want to eat all the fucking monsters i want the monsters carnally
marcille: EATING MOSNTERS???? UNHOLY. UNCOUTH. DISGUSTING. anyway here's all the dark magic and necromancy i've got on the backburner to bring back my dragon-digested gf and also i plan to find a way for everyone to live forever at the cost of my very soul if need be
kabru, normally, in a normal tone he's rehearsed 42000 times in front of a mirror: I'M NORMAL. I'M SOOOO FUCKING NORMAL. I'M THE MOST NORMAL GUY AROUND AND I'M NOT CONSTANTLY PLOTTING ASSASSINATIONS FOR THE GREATER GOOD
senshi: I have all this trauma abt being the sole survivor of the fantasy equivalent of the franklin expedition but that's not important what really matters here is eat yer goddamn veggies or so help me
and the best part is that none of them are straight

back to the beginning of the episode - this is one of the most eerie scenes in the series. farlyn is newly alive, has experienced just one evening of food and family and friendship, before being commanded to return to service to a king she doesn't know through a dungeon magic she has no way of resisting. and you can see how out of it and horrified she is the entire time
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
farlyn is nearsigted, so she's always been depicted as squinting. her wide-open eyes are both unnatural to her and unfamiliar to the viewers, and her fear and confusion are almost palpable. she isn't walking like she has control over her body. she is compelled to do and say as thistle commands. he made her hurt her brother!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
farlyn's dragon form is extremely popular on here - I love it too! - but I feel like it's easy to forget than she's in that form because her free will and her mental capabilities and her own body were forcibly taken away from her and altered, and she spends much of the series in almost a fugue state. she's capable of attacking and being hungry, but she can't speak, she appears to have no memories of who she was, and her true heart and mind arelocked away and sleeping quietly. she's insensible of the chaos and destruction inflicted on her loved ones and the world with (part of) her body and her face. it's really sad, in that sense. and that's one of the reasons I love the DM ending - instead of living a lonely life, dying a painful death, and then dying again after months disconnected from her body, farlyn gets to go home and be with her loved ones as herself, no matter how changed

Ok so was nobody going to tell me that Sogaleo and Lunala basically magically banged to create Ash’s Cosmog in the sun and moon anime??? And the Tapu guardians explain this by basically showing a video the whole thing to ash and the rest of the Sun and Moon cast???? Or was I just supposed to find that out as an aside in a Goggin video about Mew and Arceus????????

I convinced my older sister to watch chainsaw man (so I get to use her Prime Video account to watch it together). Her commentaries are:
"Is this psychological?" I said "Hmm no (lying)"
"Awww pochita is cute like bundek (bundek is one of our cats)"
"POCHITAAAAAA" actually this was us wailing together when denji and pochita got stabbed and they met on denji's dream. we don't care about denji BUT NOT POCHITA
"He should've dead from the first stab, it doesn't make sense" ??? everything written by tatsuki fujimoto are never make any sense anyway
"I don't want to watch it anymore, it's really sad he can't even meet his dog anymore"-- her final statement
"He got new friends later tho don't worry"-- my defense which wasn't entirely true bcs he'll lost them later
*Next afternoon: discuss what to eat* "How ungrateful we are, we are so picky, meanwhile denji and pochita only had a slice of bread to eat together" LMAO

so a thing this fandom does that remains FASCINATING to me, as a function of the fact a lot of this fandom is people's first fandom or only current fandom, is just... assume a lot of things it does is a scourge that this fandom has invented or doesn't exist outside of it? or like, is uniquely bad here? and i won't deny that sometimes mcyt fandom is a bit more intense by virtue of numbers, but like...
duo names: confusing fandom-injokes to describe duos and groups tend to be an anime fandom thing specifically for many historical reasons, but they're not uncommon. hey quick--if you haven't been in KHR fandom, can you guess what 1827 is? no? i'll give you a hint: that's actually a ship name. or, ygo fans, tell me the difference between puppyshipping, prideshipping, violetshipping, and rivalshipping. my hint is that they're all kaiba ships and two of them are actually the same ship. good luck!
reducing characters to a specific trait: have you read fic in another fandom before? i would recommend you go do so and come back to me. my example here is "sasuke likes tomatoes", for the record.
common au fanon that's confusing to outsiders: my deep cut here is "when i got into certain tv fandoms i was baffled by the existence of sentinel/guide fics", which is a slightly older tv fandom thing so many of you probably don't know what i'm on about. but trust me: in certain fandoms it's ubiquitous and unless you've watched a completely different tv show you're gonna have to entirely pick it up from reading fic. oh hey, hybrid aus and watcher!grian, nice to see your relative here,
fanon being treated as canon: did you know there's this whole bnha character, naomasa, who is treated as canonically having a lie detector quirk? did you know that, best i can tell, that's not in canon anywhere, it just got echoed through fanon enough that everyone treated it as canon? 'fanon trait becomes so ubiquitous everyone assumes it has to be there' is not a new thing. also, batfamily fans, i have been lead to understand the tim and coffee thing is also this.
characters being treated badly to make a different dynamic look better: the fact we have the term 'character bashing' tells you all you need to know, here. if anything my one complaint on this front isn't even that it's happening--it's that i wish bashing and/or "not [character] friendly" was tagged a little more frequently, haha.
characters being reduced to their family dynamics: tale as old as time. "even the family dynamic thing" yes even that. just because this fandom tended to be particularly ship-adverse in the past didn't mean it didn't do basically the same behaviors as any fandom with shipping did with those dynamics, just gen. and other gen fandoms also do that. yes, down to the "and shipping reduces them to a ship, unlike my gen dynamic, which is very in-character; why can't people just be friends?" thing. some of you have to have been marvel fans right.
characters being reduced to their ships: some of you have to have been marvel fans right.
The Discourse: yeah this is an "actively running show" fandom thing, but also a hiatus fandom thing. ask a homestuck about vriskourse sometime. as much as i hate to say it, it probably made doomsday discourse look cute.
and those are just like... some things i've seen people complain about on my dash recently. idk it just hit me there are probably fans in mcyt fandoms who are assuming that some things (like hybrid aus or duo names) are the kind of things that only happen here, so i thought i'd offer some examples of other places they happen! i also have even more examples if you'd like.
to be clear: this isn't shaming anyone for complaining about any of these things. lord knows i go complain to my friends about it all the time, just the other day i was complaining in the category of 'they keep bashing my guy'. it's more of just... a gentle reminder that maybe we're big, maybe we're loud, maybe we have problems... but these problems aren't always unique.
so uh. we're all suffering together i guess...?

Anime only watchers and people who aren't caught up with the Manga, BEWARE... Cuz I'm about to discuss Spy X Family Mission 93... You have been warned...! 👌
[SPOILERS AHEAD FROM THIS POINT ON]
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
Tumblr media
IT HAPPENED...! IT FINALLY HAPPENED!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH!! 😵
Honestly, words cannot describe how crazy this chapter was, but we're gonna talk about it anyway...!! 👀 LET'S GO!!! 😆
The chapter begins with everyone checking how well they did on finals, and Anya did a whole lot better than last time...!! 😆
Tumblr media
I AM SO PROUD OF HER!!! 👏😄
Anya went from 213th to 168th place!! 🎉 Let's hope that Anya continues to improve in the future...!! 😊👍
Then, we finally got to see how well she did in Classical Language and...:
Tumblr media
She got second place...!
But, she will still receive a Stella for it!! 👏😆Then, we find out that she got 24 points in math, which is just below the cut off point... Which means...:
Tumblr media
So, not only did Anya get a Stella, she ALSO received A TONITRUS BOLT!!? 😵😂🤣😌
GODDAMNIT ANYA!! 😂 That means the score is still tied, but now it's 5 and 5 until she either becomes an Imperial Scholar or gets expelled...!! 😌
Then, we got probably my new favorite Loid expression...:
Tumblr media
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 I'M SO SORRY LOID!!🤣
This poor man can't catch a break, but at he's quite proud of Anya for doing well on the test...!! 😊
After that, we cut to Authens praising Anya as well, but Sigmund says something that intrigues me...:
Tumblr media
"...One day you'll experience the frustration of realizing that hard work is not always rewarded..."
Hmm... What could this mean...? Personally, if Sigmund does have something to do with the experiments that were conducted on Anya, then this could be his way of saying that not many know of his scientific experiments... But, that's just a guess at this point and I could very well just be reading too much into this single sentence... 🤔
Moving on, before Anya goes to bed that night Loid asks her a question...:
Tumblr media
I was surprised that Twilight asked this!! 😲 But his question turned out to be for naught because Anya doesn't really remember... 😔 So, Twilight just tells her to forget about what he asked and now I'm wondering if this will lead Twilight finding out the truth about Anya's past and that she's a telepath... 🤔
Well anyway, we cut to Anya and Damian receiving Stellas for doing well on the test, and then it's the middle school students turn... AND GUESS WHO SHOWS UP...?! 👀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DEMETRIUS MOTHER F---ING DESMOND!!!😵
AFTER ALL THIS TIME, HE HAS FINALLY APPEARED...!! 👀
I can't believe that I was ACTUALLY RIGHT that he was gonna look more like his dad...! (Check out this post where I drew what I thought he might look like!! 👍)
But to continue, Demetrius is also as strange as his mother and father... ESPECIALLY BECAUSE OF THIS...!!:
Tumblr media
After finally getting to meet him and seeing that Anya can't read his mind, my original theory that he might be working with his father, just got thrown out the window...!! Because now, I think that Demetrius has been experimented on... 😥 I hope that I'm wrong, but I just don't know this point...
AND THINK THAT'S ENOUGH ABOUT THIS CHAPTER FOR TODAY!
Today's chapter was excellent, but now that Demetrius has finally shown up, my mind is going crazy about what this ALL MEANS!😫
Anyway, I think I'll stop for today and possibly regroup with myself to figure out WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE DESMONDS!! (Except for Damain, who is the only normal one there..!!🥲) So until the next Mission or if I try attempt to figure out what is up with the Desmonds; take care, be safe out there and be kind to one another...!! Later!! 👍

by your side | spider socorro
summary: after getting captured by miles quaritch, spider becomes a hostage at the rda. but with a curious young girl secretly visiting him every night, he started to think that things couldn't be so terrible. based on this ask.
genre(s): fluff
warnings: none i guess? they're just purely in love i think that's adorable. this is not proofread, i got too lazy so if you see any mistakes, no you didn't!
Tumblr media
there was a big commotion going around the rda base — a human boy, raised by na'vi, was being held hostage in the exact same place you were in. of course you were curious: people say you took a lot after your mother, wanting to know about everything and everyone. how would a human adapt in such different circumstances? could he speak english? how did a baby human end up in pandora? your mind was racing with so many questions. you had to see him now.
but it's obvious no one would let you do that. what could a sixteen year old do to help the operation? you shouldn't even be there; your mother only brought you partly because she had no one to take you in and partly because you begged her to let you come. luckily to you she was an important woman and with the help of a few people they managed to bring you to pandora. the conditions? don't stop studying. don't cause any trouble. keep your nose out of the adult's business.
you couldn't screw this up. being so close to the rda operation, even if it was just as a watcher, could be a big step for your future. so you tried your best to not get caught.
it was the middle of the night when you decided to go out of your shared room — your mother was a heavy sleeper so the chances of waking her up were almost zero. quickly typing in the password of his little kind-of-room-kind-of-prison, you couldn't keep your excitement to yourself.
"hey." you said closing the door behing you. "i know you're awake. i'm not quaritch. i'm not working for the rda either – wait, do you speak english?"
he turned his face to you with an startled expression — spider had so many questions. what was a teenager doing there? and why were you talking to him in the middle of the night? you had to be lying. there was no way you didn't work for them.
"um... my name's y/n. i know this might sound strange but i find you really interesting. my mom works here, you know. she's a scientist. i'm sorry about the way you were treated by them earlier... i mean the torture and stuff." you were getting closer to him, trying to keep things friendly.
"so you came here to apologise for your mother's actions?"
"sort of. i kinda want to know more about you. but i wanted to apologise for that too, yeah." now you were next to his bed. "miles, isn't it? can i sit down?"
"it's spider. nobody calls me that." he said giving you enough space to sit beside him.
"so... spider, how are you feeling? i mean... you were raised by na'vi and now there's just... so many humans. this must be confusing."
"there's humans where i live too. i'm not an animal, y/n."
"right, sorry. it's just that this is new to me. i didn't know humans lived in pandora. my mom does everything to keep me clueless about the operation — it's not like i should be knowing something, but i just want to learn more. people treat me like an outsider here, it's so annoying."
being an outsider. the boy knew a thing or two about feeling out of place. of course you were in different situations, but he could relate to your feelings in a certain extent.
"what are you even doing here? in pandora, i mean. you're like... my age? shouldn't you be at the earth?"
you shrugged. "i didn't have anyone to take care of me back there. and i really wanted to meet the operation. i want to follow my mom's footsteps, being a scientist and all."
you and spider kept talking about your differences and about pandora the whole night: he had so much knowledge to share, even if it didn't seem like it. he told you about the fauna and flora, the natives traditions and religion, and about himself too. he was quaritch's son. well, not this quaritch. the human one — you knew about the story. the colonel's memories were transfered to an avatar once he died.
you, on the other hand, explained to him how things worked at your home planet: the animals it had (he got really interested in monkeys and dogs), the organized society, and how the earth was dying. you talked about your hopes and dreams of a better planet and how much you wanted to make you mother proud. before you knew, it was almost morning and you had to leave before someone catched you with him.
"it's getting late, i have to go. but i'll be back tomorrow if you want me to? we can talk more."
the blond smiled at you — it was good knowing someone in this hell of a place, maybe making a friend even. "i'll see you tomorrow. take care of yourself."
...
a few weeks passed since you started visiting spider. you soon became really close — it was like you were a planet he was orbiting over. the boy was constantly thinking about you, craving for your attention; you became the center of his little universe.
he paced around his room impatiently. you were late. he didn't know what time it was, but he knew you should be with him already. you always came shortly after all the lights were turned off, maybe 20 minutes later. 30, if you were feeling scared of being caught. but it felt like hours already, and there was no sign of you.
the boy sat down on his bed. "im being pathetic" he though. it was impossible for such a smart and beautiful person as you falling in love with him. and there was the fact that you were from two different words — there's no way you wouldn't take this into consideration when getting closer with him. you wouldn't leave everything you know to be with him; he wasn't enough.
soon, he heard the sound of the keys being pressed, snapping back to reality.
"spider. sorry i'm late. my mom couldn't sleep so she kept talking with me until she felt tired. im really sorry i made you wait!"
that was a lie. you mother always fell asleep right after she hopped on the bed. the real reason you didn't come earlier it was because you knew that you were falling for miles socorro. and at this point you could do nothing to stop it. laying on the bunk bed you kept debating with yourself if you should just start to avoid him. he didn't feel the same, and it would never work out anyways; you knew how loyal he was to the na'vi and specially the sully family. it was only a question of time until he could find a way to escape the base and come back to his normal life. without you.
the thought of being separated made your heart ache. how could you become so attached to someone in such a short period of time? as your mind drifted back to the thought of being far from spider, you couldn't help but give him a tight hug, trying to fight back the tears forming on the corner of your eyes.
that was the first time you hugged.
his knees felt like jelly, trembling hands resting on your back. "why are you doing this? not that i'm complaining..."
"sorry. i'm sorry. it's just that i... i've been thinking." you said, not letting go of him. it was like you were scared he was going to disappear if you did so. "your place is not here, spider. you belong with the na'vi in the forest. it's not fair what they're doing to you. but is it selfish of me to wish that we could continue together?"
the boy tightened his grip on you. "but we can. come with me."
you went silent for a second. he didn't mean that, did he? it was insane, leaving all that you knew behind — your brilliant future, your mother, the place you called home — for a boy. but at the same time, it felt right. being with spider felt right. and it didn't matter if you were in the forest, the base or the earth. as long as you were with him, anywhere felt like home. "promise me you'll always be by my side. if i go with you, you can't leave me behind. don't forget about me."
translation: don't fall in love with someone else.
he broke the hug and looked at you, putting a strand of your hair behind your ear. "are you kidding me?" spider smiled. "how could i ever leave you? i'm not that dumb, y/n. you're the most amazing person i've ever met."
now it was your turn to smile; you knew it was hard, dropping everything just to be with him. but at the same time you had this gut feeling that it was going to be worth it. you didn't know how or when you were going to do it yet, but you had each other, and it's all that mattered. getting on your tiptoes, you placed a kiss at the top of his head, stroking his cheek with you thumb.
"ill always be by your side, spider socorro."
"and i'll always be by yours, y/n"
Tumblr media
authors note: i hope this doesn't suck too much... i lowkey hate this scenario but i really wanted to give spider some love, my boy deserves it! i don't know if it's too long or rushed, i tried to fit everything that i wanted to happen in just one chapter bc i don't really feel like writing a pt two for this one, sorry.
likes + reblogs are appreciated! ♡

Idk if this is Hunger AU canon or my own personal fanon but
one of the "calling cards" that the Watchers used in Evo was bedrock
bedrock is unbreakable by a player
perfect for trapping the player you're using as a Watcher incubator
and the texture looks rough af
when you get desperate you often try to do stuff to escape even if it's impossible, right
so what I'm saying is
probably one of the last things player!Grian did was tearing his hands to shreds trying to break bedrock out of sheer desperation
which makes all the passages in your fic where he's staring at his hands even more *gestures vaguely*
(idk why I typed this out in this format but it felt right so I'm going with it)
MAN OKAY THIS IS SUPER COOL i especially adore how youve connected it with the way i keep having Grian stare at his own hands???? which ftr is smth ive only just now realized i do all the time AKDBWKDJKSSJ this is JUST like the scarian jaw kisses thing HELPPPP 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 but thats such a cool thought!!! And utterly angsty i love it >:]
Its also made me realize i dont think ive ever actually told yall what did happen during that interim where Grian was captive as a Player before he died and became a Watcher, so buckle in i guess as i try to explain this one to yall (obligatory cws for captivity, parasitism, violated autonomy, body horror, and major character death discussion)
Yknow the world borders the life series has?? It was like that, but tiny. Maybe a couple chunks' worth of space to move around in. He spawned into a savannah biome and the Watchers specifically in charge of keeping an eye on him (pun intended) penned him in with the borders, implanted the specially-coded larva, and then retreated back just outside the server's barrier code to, well. To Watch.
So post Evo dragon fight the Watchers convinced Grian to join them without telling him what that entailed. They then proceeded to whisk him away to the server cluster's dev crystal, which is where the remnants of this Watcher colony made their semi-permanent home. There, held together basically only by the Watchers' ability to manipulate code, they had Grian make a brand new server.... and immediately trapped him in it.
He spent a year there slowly dying, eaten from the inside out by a parasite that was collecting his memories, copying over his stats and personality, with very limited space and resources to get by with. I know he built a tiny house out of acacia, but it never got any bigger than a starter base. He lived off of mostly bread and the meat from a few animals that spawned in with him; he primarily used stone tools, because those were what was most readily available. It was a very terrifying and lonely year, where all access to the outside world was cut off, and he was meticulously watched over to keep from dying while the larva inside him continued to grow and destroy him.
The Watchers were mostly hands-off in terms of interaction, but they did do regular check-ins to ensure the larva was alive and that there was no danger present to its host. Hostile mobs were carefully warded off, and Grian spent most of his time alternating between begging them to let him go (they never responded), trying to figure out ways to escape (it never worked), and tending to baseless chores just to keep from going out of his mind as his body grew weaker and weaker and more unstable around him.
I have a lot of feelings about this tbh, bc its just such a bleak scenario to think about-- trapped in a tiny cage with something killing you from the inside out, and your captors wont even talk to you about it properly. Being left otherwise to your own devices, with the terrible, lingering knowledge that, even if it was under duress, you still agreed to this. The fact that, after a certain point, after your questions and pleas are summarily ignored and brushed aside, you finally realize: you aren't meant to survive this. You are going to die.
A juvenile Watcher's first meal are the emotions during their host's last few moments. Grian was no exception; he cracked his way out of his own ribcage, and, without meaning to, amplified and feasted on Player!Grian's agony and terror as he died. With their memory codes finally disconnected, Grian had to watch himself through the eyes of a stranger as his terrified consciousness dissolved and his body fell apart into nothing more than loose strings of code.
Only then, still weak and flailing and helpless, was he was brought into the colony proper, in order to teach him how to be a Watcher. It wouldnt be for another few years before Grian gained the strength, control, and insight required to make his desperate escape. In total, i wanna say he spent somewhere between.... 4-6 years??? with the colony against his will. It would take another 4 for him to finally scrape together the courage to contact Mumbo and finally ask him for an invite into the Hermitcraft proper
One of these days i do plan to write that reunion, actually, which i'll add to the series as another prequel just like all the words that i forgot to say, which takes place roughly 6-8 months after Grian finally joins Hermitcraft. And if yall want to read an absolutely fantastic fic that deals with the moment Watcher!Grian was born and Player!Grian died, you should absolutely check out my friend @raichett 's fic Divergency, which ive pretty much canonized bc it REALLY hits the nail on the head for that situation.
Okay this got a lot longer than i meant it to sidhskdjej also those timeframes are a little squiggly bc i havent fully settled on where they fall on the general timeline. I wanna say Grian had been a Watcher for abt a decade by the time Mumbo got him onto Hermitcraft, though, so thats the loose timeline im working off of when i talk abt this :] anyway thanks for giving me an excuse to write this all out!!! while your idea about the bedrock isnt necessarily canon, i absolutely ADORE it and can totally see Grian just tearing up his hands while scrabbling against the world border.... utterly heartbreaking we fucking LOVE to see it. Thanks for sending in your ask!!! I always love seeing what you have to say about hunger au!!! :DDD

What the anime got wrong about Gilgamesh
So, we know Saber kinda gets shafted in the anime adaptations. She’s introduced in Zero, in which her role is a bit different from FSN, and then instead of adapting the introductory route, the one where we learn the most about her as a character, we skip straight to UBW.
Well, guess who else gets a similar treatment, where they’re first introduced to anime-only watchers via the prequel, and then we skip the route they’re supposed to be introduced in for one where they play a comparatively lesser role?
Illya, of course! And then the bastards cut her scenes from the HF movies as well.
Okay, but seriously, I want to talk about Gilgamesh. Now you might be thinking, Gilgamesh? What’s wrong with Gilgamesh? People liked Gil in Zero. Well, so did I, but reading the Fate route again, there are some interesting differences. I think examining his introductory scenes in both Zero and Fate makes this clear.
Tumblr media
Brief recap for those who don’t remember: In Fate he appears near the end of the route, where he slaughters Caster and establishes himself as the final boss. In Zero he appears near the start of the story, where he slaughters Assassin (well, one of them), and establishes himself as a threat.
Tumblr media
These scenes are remarkably similar; I wouldn’t be surprised if Urobuchi’s was an intentional homage (Zero does this a lot, compare the role that Lancer plays as Saber’s initial opponent in both).
The two key components here are that Gil is standing at a position higher than his opponent in order to display his superiority, and that his opponent gets utterly destroyed with no chance of fighting back.
That’s rare in any Fate fight scene, but it serves to establish that if Gil wants you dead, you’re dead. It’s a simple but effective formula, especially paired with his striking character design and Seki Tomokazu’s excellent voice acting.
There are two key differences, though. Firstly, Urobuchi is kind of cheating: Assassin is, by design, expendable. It’s only impressive that Gil dispatches him so quickly until you realise that he’s one of a hundred different Assassins. This was even a trick in-story, the plot concocted by Kirei and Tokiomi to conceal that Assassin is still alive.
Caster, on the other hand, is not expendable. She’s an important character who serves as a midboss in UBW and seems poised to serve the same role in Fate before Gil arrives. She’s in the middle of a tense fight scene with Saber and Shirou and is hinting at the hidden capabilities of her Noble Phantasm and everything! This, to be fair, is something that Nasu can only get away with due to the medium – in a visual novel, you can have the impact of a sudden subversion of expectation in one route while playing it straight in another, ensuring you don’t waste any setup or make readers feel cheated.
The second difference, and I think the more important one, is how we’re supposed to react to the scene as audiences. Zero’s version seems solely oriented around showing off how cool Gil is; Assassin gets about as much characterization as a plank of wood, meaning that the audience, as dispassionate spectators, are much closer to Gil’s point of view than anything.
FSN’s version, on the other hand, has a point-of-view character! And if there’s anything we know about Emiya Shirou by this point, it’s that he’s not a big fan of seeing women getting hurt.
Tumblr media
As a result, it’s very easy for us to mentally reframe the scene as a person seeing another person getting brutally murdered. And it is brutal. Caster screams in agony as she desperately tries to escape, in contrast to Assassin who simply accepts his fate. The whole scene is dyed blood-red as she is repeatedly skewered by a barrage of Gil’s Noble Phantasms.
Gil isn’t just portrayed as impressive and powerful in this scene, he’s also cruel and awful. And that’s my first point:
1: Golden Man Bad
Gilgamesh is a surprisingly offputting individual.
From his voice (Shirou describes his laugh as ‘irritating’), to his mannerisms (remember the way he blocks Saber’s blows by just covering his head with his hands?), to his unbelievably weird facial expressions, he’s the epitome of an unlikeable villain.
Tumblr media
In Zero, we see Gil at his best: sexy, dominating and intelligent. He’s still not a very nice guy, but his bursts of anger all fall on characters we aren’t particularly sympathetic to. In FSN his casual cruelty is made more apparent and more objectionable. (Need I remind the reader of what he does to Illya in UBW?)
In Zero Gil’s constant boasting asserts his confidence and power; in FSN it just makes him kind of seem like a douchebag.
Tumblr media
The core qualities that people like about Gil, and make him a cool character to watch, are still there in Fate, but they’re tempered by a lot of reasons to not like him, which barely show up in Zero.
Basically, in FSN Gil seems to have been conceived as the type of villain you love to hate, while in Zero he leans way into the role of a villain you love to love. The subject of how he's portrayed in FGO, CCC or Strange Fake is beyond the bounds of this post to address, but I do think the popularity of his appearance in Zero had some influence there.
2: Sexism
Strictly speaking it’s a subset of the above point as it’s a big part of what makes him so unlikeable, but I think it’s interesting enough to deserve its own discussion, considering it’s much more noticeable here than in other entries.
Just a quick reminder of some of his greatest hits:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact that Gil is objectifying Saber specifically because of her gender is obvious, and interestingly enough Shirou is the one who pushes back against it. There’s a real comparison to be made between the two insofar as they are both trying to win her over in the latter stages of the story.
Tumblr media
Gil ascribes to a similar perspective to Saber when it comes to the roles people should play. He just thinks that Saber should abandon her role of king in favour of the role of woman, which in Gil’s view is characterized by a set of obligations that include marrying a man and basically becoming his slave.
On the other hand, Shirou is strongly opposed to denying people’s humanity based on arbitrary categories. That’s why, in the early parts of the route, he . . . repeatedly emphasizes the fact that she’s a girl? It probably sounded better in Nasu’s head.
Regardless, the point is that Shirou sees Saber as a human, while Gil sees her as an object. So, there you have it. Emiya Shirou, ally of social justice.
Now, I don’t think Zero is necessarily a worse portrayal of Gil than Fate. In many ways it’s more interesting, and in fact, I think they’re complimentary. Which nicely leads into my last point (wow, it’s almost like I planned the structure of this post before I wrote it):
3: His defeat
For a moment, put yourself in the shoes of an anime-only fan who has started with Zero, just about to watch UBW (yeah, I know, ew).
The main takeaway from Zero seems to be that the bad guys always win. People who pursue their dreams are idiots who will inevitably fail, even if their dreams are really cool (looking at you, Iskandar). A thorough victory for Gil’s ideology of self-centeredness, and a large factor seems to be that he doesn’t care - from his perspective, he already won like three thousand years ago!
So, going into UBW, the characters that we’re attached to, whose stories we really want to see the end of, are Gil and Kirei. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we want them to win – we’d be fine with them losing, just so long as they do something.
And then Gil gets shot in the head and swallowed by a black hole. Shirou wins, but it’s hard to say that Gil loses. After all, Shirou’s whole deal is that he doesn’t need external enemies – the one he must fight is his own image (UBW takes this line very literally). All well and good for the Shirou fans – i.e. the people who began the story at the correct point – but those excited for what they were expecting to be a culmination of Gil’s character arc might understandably be a little disappointed.
To those people I say: read Fate!
In this route, Gilgamesh’s final battle is against Saber, not Shirou. Saber, a person he knows prior to the beginning of the story due to the events of Zero. Saber, the person who serves as his primary motivation and goal during the story. Saber, the person with whom he has significant ideological disagreements about the nature of kingship with!
Just as Ea, embodiment of the cold, hard Truth of the world, proves superior to Iskandar’s dream by destroying Ionian Hetairoi, so too does Avalon, the symbol of everything Artoria fought for, prove able to endure Ea’s destructive power. It’s a perfect conclusion to the questions asked in the Banquet of Kings.
UBW, for the Zero fan, does not reveal anything new about Gil’s character. But Fate does. We get his single best quote!
Tumblr media
Not only is Gil implicitly justifying Artoria’s own unobtainable dream as valuable, but he also identifies himself with her, as a fellow pursuer of that which cannot be obtained.
The contradiction at the heart of their conflict is that Gil wanted Artoria precisely because she was the kind of person to refuse him. What attracted him to her was the stubborn idealism of her kingship, not the subservience he expects from a woman. So, there’s no actual way for Gil to end up satisfied, even if he wins.
His plan was to force Artoria to drink Grail mud to physically incarnate her, driving her insane, but even if he could make her submit to him without that, she would still be tainted, still be fundamentally less valuable to him by the mere fact of being his possession.
In realizing this, he accepts his defeat, unlike in other routes. He couldn’t stand the idea of losing to inferior copies of his treasures in Unlimited Blade Works, but Artoria’s Noble Phantasms were never in his treasury to begin with. And after owning everything in existence for thousands of years, the things you don’t have start to look a lot more alluring than anything you already do.
Tumblr media
This is the fifth of roughly thirty analytical essays on Fate/Stay Night that I will be reposting here (with some edits) from Reddit.
It was once pointed out to me that this one was where my posts started 'getting good' so to speak. Hopefully this time round the rough start has been softened a bit.

✨️Welcome to my Grian HeadCannon rant✨️
Hi, so I'm writing this on my phone while watching Hermitcraft. Lol. These are thoughts that have been bouncing around my head for a while.
-Grian's wings-
I think they shapshift. Think about it. We, the audience and the artists, are constantly making different variations of Grian. Either through the art itself or through headcannons. "Cannon" wise, we are the Watchers, and We gave Grian his wings.
There's Parrot Grian, which is pretty much default Grian at this point. Then there's white winged Grian, which could either be a dove or a chicken. Theres the desert birb Grian because of Life series Desert-Duo. There's the recent King Fisher Grian because of his fishing addiction this season. Then there's his Watcher form, which usually ends up being biblical accurate angel. Which I think the multiple wings are the different kinds of bird avian hybrid We make Grian into. (This will probably be the only "original" thought that's been going through my head. The rest of this is me compiling HCs I've heard/seen/watched and have been brimming full to talk and analyze, tho the analyzing will probably be a different post lol)
-Grian's Family-
There's a lot of HCs when it comes to family connects to Grian. There's YHS background that left him as an abandoned kid in Japan. Nadia225 gave Grian adopted Mafia parents, which is really cool, and you should watch their videos because they're really talented. And they gave Grian Bio-parents where one is a Water and the other is a Listener. And they're royalty. There's HCs of him being adopted by Philza (which honestly makes no sense to me because I think Grian is older than Philza. Character wise too.) And then He gets adopted by Xisuma. So parental figure-wise, there are a few to choose from.
Sibling wise... that's even bigger. There's the classic Jimmy and Pearl. There was one of Scar and Pearl being sibs to Grian. (The sibling dance animation that I can't remember the youtubers name to credit) There's Etho, through choice, with Nadia225 (or that's how I've interpreted their interactions lol). And then there's Martyn who gets thrown in, too. (But this just might be me.) Back to parent Philza, Grian gains Wilbur, Techno, Tommy, and occasionally Tubbo as younger brothers. I guess We see Grian as a big Family dude. (^○^)
Extended family tho... I have yet to see anything about aunts and uncles, not even grandparents, and my brain isn't coming up with anything.
Parent Grian always ends up adopting Tommy, but I think I've seen at least 2 fanfics where it was Tubbo instead.
-Watcher Relationships-
It's so weird. Like. Do We have a Feral Sibling relationship with Grian. Or are We mortal enemies. Is he traumatized by Us, or has he fully accepted being a Watcher. Like, I love the angst fics as much as the next Watcher, BUT PLEASE, I NEED MORE POSITIVE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN US, would love any fic recs anyone has, lol.
-Martyns cannon-
I still need to actually research this one, but at the end of Evo (Grian pov) it is /heavily/ implied that Grian joins the Watchers, seemingly by choice. Then I moved on to hermitcraft 6-9 and binge watched that. So if there's any Martyn Cannon that can be added on plus his "headcannons" feel free to do so!
Other Hermit HCs on the way. :]

dunmeshi videos are the only anime videos i've allowed to appear in my youtube recommended except the ones i've watched all kinda seem to have that standard anime watcher vaguely hand wavy politically centrist right ish guy making off color jokes and talking about the characters without a deep understanding and reverence for character writing and animation…… how do anime fans watch these… i can barely stand it its granting against my brain how under researched it all feels……………… my fault for being so used to video essays and hearing people talk passionately about things they love i guess……

wait. why are you sexy gengar
Oh, so this is some kinda story! And I guess now y'all are gonna hear it.
The truth is I've been holding out on most of you because back on my birthday @zerozeroren gifted me with an incredible piece of art that is going to require a bit of explanation.
So here we go.
Being a lover of So Bad It's Good Media and a watcher of Booktube videos, it was inevitable that I would hear about the supposedly spicy, supposedly deadly fantasy trainwreck that is Lightlark by Alex Aster. For anyone who might not have seen the liveblogging I did of that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book for a bunch of reasons Aster never intended and had to pause listening to the audiobook several times because I had to stop and laugh at the ridiculously poorly thought out shit going on. For anyone who's the sort to indulge in So Bad It's Good media, it gets my recommendation. (The sequel Nightbane does not; that was both utterly stupid AND horrifying in its unintentional implications. But I digress.)
Anyway, this piece of art came about from talking to Ren about some of the characters, particularly our main character Isla Crown and her love interest Oro.
There's been a lot of confusion on how to say Isla's given name. Before I listened to the audiobook, I would have assumed it would have had a pronunciation similar to island with a silent s. But no, according to the audiobook narration, her name is pronounced Ice-la. Upon hearing this, Ren declared that a "Pokemon-ass sounding name." And that's when I realized that Isla is implied to be humanoid but it's never actually specified. The people of Lightlark are divided into six different types of beings, and Isla is a Wildling. But the only actual descriptions we get of her are that she's got brown hair and she looks like her mother. So in defiance of the obvious setup to picture her looking like an ice-type Pokemon, I chose to picture her looking like my favorite purple ghosty boy Gengar.
But that's only the part of the picture I've been using for my icon. I haven't shown most of you the other part of the picture that has Oro. Oro is a Sunling. (I swear these names are killing me.) The big conflict of Lightlark is that all of these fantasy races have been cursed and they're trying to complete a ritual according to a prophecy in order to undo them. Sunlings in particular are cursed by being harmed by the sun, the very thing that would normally give them power. Oro is also something called an Origin, meaning he has powers from the other fantasy races, though the primary one we see him use besides his own power is the Skyling ability to fly. Between being harmed by sunlight, the implied nocturnal existence that comes with that, and his ability to fly, Ren and I decided he was basically a vampire. And I was like, "We need to pick a dorky vampire to represent him. I know! He should look like Alucard! Not sexy new Castlevania animation Alucard but like what Alucard looks like in Captain N: The Game Master!" (For the record, they are technically the same character. Alucard in Captain N is the same Alucard from the Castlevania series. But the character designs in Captain N: The Game Master are...questionable.)
And that led to this:
Tumblr media
Take it in. It is a thing of cracktastic beauty. I couldn't have asked for a better birthday present. What else can I say but Ren has done it again.

I do not know if it was you, or another blogger that made a character analysis of Gojo that made me like the character and discover more about him through the manga.
While I never read the manga before or watched the anime, I had been exposed to it by my friends and some BNHA bloggers. Back then, I found Gojo to be overhyped (discount Kakashi) while liking the animation(?) style, bit still no interest.
BNHA and its Endeavour Redemption arc in the doing was tiring me to the point that I stopped reading it and manga altogether. For mayne six months or so, until now, at least. I randomly found your blog last week , and it got me a new hyper fixation 😃. You got me to start reading JJK (Megan cos playing also helps).
I bought Number 0 and Number 1 of the mangas. Only to remember midway in Number 0 that Walmart Kakashi will be snapped in two like a Kit Kat🥲. I saw that leak in one of the BNHA blogs, and I didn't mind it back then since I wasn't in the fandom, but Lord, now it sucks.
Anyways, all this long rant to say that I like reading your posts.
Gojo, rest in pain, I guess?
Probably was someone else, I don't write much analysis posts about Gojo. I think once or twice I did, I can't recall. Probably reblogged one though you saw!
I don't know, they're really just two different characters to me. Also... I was never really an active reader or watcher of Naruto like that (just very familiar) so when I first saw Gojo, Kakashi didn't register to me at all.
Like, I did not get similar vibes at all. And it actually annoys me that people will be like "He copied Kakashi's flow"! Kakashi ain't the only white haired, face covering character out there with magical eyes, y'all stop. 😆
Even funnier when, by this point, Gojo has probably been unmasked more than he has been wearing something on his face and switches up what he puts on his face. Kakashi been wearing the same mask for...? Also, didn't it take years for Kakashi's whole face to be shown or something? Took like seven episodes for Gojo to show that face.
**
I always been a fan of Megan's music and then when I found out she was into anime I was like "YYYYYEEEEEAAAAH". She cosplayed as Miruko one Halloween and it made my year. I am a former believer that Miruko would vibe to her music.
Just seeing other Black women being unapologetic fans of anime (or anything) does wonders for me and I hate it when people act as if it's such a foreign idea to understand. Honey, we can have interests, too, like everyone else. It's normal.
**
I always try to be careful about spoilers for anything I'm into. Like, I can talk about a chapter that happened two years ago, but I'll still mark as a spoiler because I know some people don't read Mangas or even if they do haven't caught up to that specific part.
That actually what set me off when Usher cosplayed as Gojo because he literally put "rest in peace, Gojo" or something along those lines and the amount of people who weren't even aware of 236... like bro, come on.
I knew it just had to be a marketing tactic because I know damn well Usher ain't seen JJK a day in his life and how convenient it is he comes out with that cosplay around the time when "Daddy's Home" becomes a fairly popular song used in Gojo's edits. I can't go watching one video on YouTube without hearing that song play when Gojo pops up. And even if he has... WHY WOULD YOU TAG IT LIKE THAT?!
Oh, but Megan definitely doesn't know any of the characters she be cosplaying, alright... okay... 🙄
I'm just going off on a whole tangent here, I apologize for that. I've been sick for like three days and just woke up from a nap. 😅
**
Also, thank you! Glad you enjoy my posts!! Anytime anyone says they like reading my posts, I still get shocked. They're really are just random thoughts I been having and really I'm still learning grasping the characters and story myself. And this is just for any. I don't even for them to get read, let alone for anyone to actually agree with me. I guess because, at the end of the day, I really just needed to throw a thought out there before I lose it or keep rethinking about it over and over.

One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to fandom/media interpretation in general is that seemingly whenever something tries to explore the emotion of love in a nuanced or non-straightforward manner everyone and their mother jumps to the conclusion that it’s inherently romantic in nature. I don’t know if this is my aroace brain speaking, but it’s something I’ve never understood when clearly the author doesn’t mean it in a romantic sense. The two examples I’m thinking of are Violet Evergarden and Ancient Magus Bride.
Violet Evergarden is about a child soldier, Violet post-war trying to discover what emotions are, so that she can better understand the major who sacrificed his life for her. She’s specifically fixated on the notion of love, because the major told her once that he loved her and she’s struggled to understand what he meant by that. As the show goes on, she begins to discover just what these emotions mean, both to other people and to herself. Now, it needs to be said again that she was a child soldier, the major was around 30 if I remember correctly. Either way very much an established adult when he found Violet when she was like 8-10. Naturally he meant that he loves her in a familial way, everything the show does supports this interpretation, the only obscurity comes from Violet’s perspective because she doesn’t understand his meaning at first. Take a big fat guess as to half the posts I saw about their relationship framed it. Yep, “oh how gross he was in love with a child,” “this show is gross,” “its so sad how he was in love but now they can never be together T-T.” Like. What the fuck y’all. What the actual fuck. Did we watch the same show????? It’s legitimately baffling that just because the word love is used that is the assumption made in direct contradiction to what canon is saying.
Ancient Magus Bride has it much, much worse unfortunately, because it’s a much more,,, morally suspect look at what love is, or more specifically, the nature of human relationships. Chise and Elias have a bond that cannot be easily summed up in a few words (which is the entire point), and they see a lot of various twists and turns in their dynamic as they learn  not only to live with each other but come into their own and grow. Now, a lot of people assume Ancient Magus Bride is a romance because of how it starts out, with Elias stating that he bought Chise to be his bride. However, as you read further, specifically into the 40′s, Elias reveals that he only said the word bride because he understood it to be people who spend their lives together, and wanted to cut corners by making his student and bride the same thing. Elias, as an inhuman creature, does not have the capability for empathy or understanding emotions/concepts as humans do, which is what leads to a lot of the suspect situations in the beginning of the story because he doesn’t get the implications of what he’s doing. The author herself has even mentioned in official interviews that she doesn’t see their relationship as romantic (not that it stopped anyone), along with the entire story rejecting such an interpretation because shoving Chise and Elias into such a box goes against what it’s saying about the messy nature of relationships. Additionally, much like Violet Evergarden but worse, Chise is 16 while Elias is a being 100s of years old (although without the emotional intelligence to match). Either way though, their dynamic for the beginning of the show is very much of Elias trying to control Chise. He withholds information from her, manipulates her into trusting him more easily, does things behind her back that he knows she wouldn’t approve of. And that is important, I appreciate that aspect being there because it’s all completely necessary to show just what kind of person Elias is, and how his standards are vastly different compared to human ones. But a lot of the whole “EliasxChise is soooo good” hype came from anime only watchers- and is that really the dynamic yall wanted? Really? Especially when the anime watered down the resolution to that conflict? More importantly, imagine being braindead and also having no taste at all simultaneously. You take so many interesting aspects of their dynamic by just going “and theyre in love UwU” because you ignore their complexities. On top of being really fucking gross in my opinion.
And these two aren’t the only example of this. In general I think plenty of relationships would be far better off being explored as the nuanced, complex things that they are without slapping an “in love” label on them. (Jayce and Viktor from Arcane come to mind for me, what they have going on as friends and the importance the narrative places on that friendships is so much more valuable to me then any shipping). And again, I’m left wondering if this is an aroace thing, bc talking with a friend who is also aroace about her experiences in researching romance literature and what allo people find rewarding about a romance is like reading about an alien species. Do yall just live like this???? It’s so sad you are missing out on so much
