The Gravity Falls Timeline

All of this is based on my video, but I assume not many people will want to sit through 2.5 hours of me working this out, so here's a condensed written version.

Some rules I set for myself: If the actual name of an IP, a person or an event is referenced in J3/the Show, I included it into my math for my timeline (ex: references to Ronald Reagan or The Eurythmics, or other REAL WORLD figures). If a REFERENCE is made without the actual name being referenced (ex: in the Journal, Ford mentions Phantom Bustifiers, a reference to Ghostbusters, a movie that didn’t come out in our world until 1984), I did not put that into this timeline (I know what year Ghostbusters came out, but not which year Phantom Bustifiers came out).

With that in mind, let’s begin:

The Stans are born June 15 1951.

Evidence:

Their Bar Mitzvah happened when they were 12 (not 13, as is typical) and their birthday is on June 15th. Because a Bar Mitzvah is dependent on one’s birthday on the Hebrew calendar and not the Gregorian calendar, this means that their 13th Hebrew birthday must land on a date that is BEFORE their 13th Gregorian birthday, something that is typically more rare (the Hebrew birthday is usually AFTER one’s typically celebrated birthday).

The only viable year where this applies is 1951, when their birthday lands on Sivan 11, resulting in a 13th Hebrew birthday in May of 1964, BEFORE their 13th birthday on June 15th

The Stans find the Stan O War in spring of 1964 at age 12 (or 1961, if you think they were 10)

Evidence:

There are two viable dates for when they find the Stan o War, depending on if they’re 10 (the same age Stan was when he started writing Lil Stanley in the Lost Legends comics) or 12 (the same age as Dipper and Mabel). I think that the way the artist drew the young Stan twins in the Lil Stanley comic looks (age 10) looks slightly younger than how they look in the series (and they are designed a little differently than they look in the Jersey Devil comic, when we KNOW they have the Stan O War already), but there is evidence for both sides.

I lean toward them being 12 because they pull out a sharpie, which wasn’t invented until 64, but there is a reference to a Bruce Springsteen song in a magazine in Lost Legends, quoted by someone named “Brucey S, age 11” and Bruce Springsteen would have been 11 in 1961, so this might be 1961 (or the magazine Ford is reading from might be an old magazine.) I went with 1964, because I think 12 parallelled the ages of Dipper and Mabel better.

Stan gets kicked out in spring of 1969 right before they turned 18. Ford starts at Backupsmore in the fall semester.

Evidence:

Stan makes a reference to Jackie O, which means Jackie Kennedy already remarried to be Jackie Onnassis, and is also still in the public eye, something that would be progressively less common after 1969 (she also happened to visit New Jersey in spring of 1969 and that would have made state headlines, something which is probably a coincidence, but nonetheless very interesting).

Furthermore, there is a portrait of Nixon in the principal’s office, and he would have been sworn in in early 1969.

I think 1969 is more likely than 1970 because ‘69 gives more wiggle room for Shermie to be the baby (more on that later) and for Ford to get at least one PhD.

-Stan dates Carla “Hotpants” McCorkle,(reconnecting for another date after the one at the theater in their teenage years), probably in 1971 (if this “hallucinatey” date even happened at all; if you dont think it happened at all, disregard).

Evidence:

We know this is a later date, when stan is an adult, because his design matches the designs on one of his fake IDs from his years on the run. It was likely 1971 because that is when the term “hotpants” was used to describe those short shorts.

The hippie aesthetic also started dying down after 1972 after the Manson attacks, so I picked 71 for the Juke Joint date.

Ford graduated from Backupsmore at the very earliest 1974, MAYBE early 1975.

Evidence:

In the journal it says he went to Gravity Falls in 1975, but we know he couldn’t have graduated earlier than 74, because we know that he played DDnMoreD in college, and he says in the journal that it was copyrighted in 1974. He also says Stanley always mocked him for playing it, which literally isn’t possible, so he’s either misremembering Stanley mocking him for an EARLIER TTRPG, or this copyright is for a later edition (though I think it must be the former, since DDnMD is a clear reference to DnD which WAS copyrighted in 1974. Still. Up to you.)

This means he completed his PhD in 6 years (or, three years ahead of schedule as described in the series). I believe many of his other PhDs were honorary degrees, and didn't bother working them into this timeline. He got them later.

Stan joins Rico’s gang in the late 70s

Evidence:

Sometime in the late 70s, Stan gets tangled up in what is implied to be the Colombian cartel, which would have been most active in the late 70s, between 75 and 79. Following his trajectory on the map in ATOTS showing his path across the country, he headed below the border toward the end of that trackline, so it was probably later on.

Ford started Journal 3 in 1981, shortly after meeting Bill in 1981.

Evidence:

He says he discovered his muse in 1981 in J3. He also says he is starting J3 six years after he started investigating Gravity Falls (which he did in 75). He also says early on in J3 that he is in his 30s, and he would have turned 30 in June of 1981, three days before he started J3.

There is some fuckery here on how he’s known his muse for “two years” midway J3, and the way I explain that in the video is that the first part of J3 spans nearly 2 years, and there is ample evidence that he wrote many pages out of order. This might be a page from later on in 1982, early 83, instead of mid-81.

We know that Reagan was already in office at this point.

Fiddleford shows up in July of 1982. Fiddleford begins making the memory gun after the Gremloblin incident later that year.

Evidence:

We know at least a year has passed because if you track the months, they go from June, to August, and then later on down to July again when Fiddleford is called. As for the Gremloblin incident, it happened relatively close to the bunker incident (which would have been closer to summer, since it was still hot outside) but it was followed closely by the carnival, where they had squash for sale, and squash are in season after September, typically.

First Portal Test is on January 18, 1983

Fiddleford falls through the portal, his head poking through, on January 18 1983, the day after the confrontation he had with Ford in the diner.

Late February, 1983 - The Portal Incident

Evidence:

There are three many reasons I chose this date. Firstly, we know it is 1983 not just because it follows the trajectory of earlier dates, but because we know that Ford has heard The Eurythmics’ chart topper “Sweet Dreams Are Made of This” because when he returns he says he is looking forward to their next one, and that came out in January of 83’, before he would have been sucked through.

Secondly, five weeks after January 18th, it would still be snowy in up-mountain Oregon where Ford is, but not that snowy in New Mexico where Stan is when he gets the post card.

Thirdly, we know at least 5-6 weeks have passed because Ford describes about this many weeks during his “paranoid era” in the journal (more than one instance of “a couple weeks, several weeks, a few weeks”, etc.).

In the year 2000, Dipper and Mabel are born.

Evidence:

I know most people think it’s 1999. And that is fine, but I have ample evidence that the show takes place in 2013, not 2012 (see below), so 2000 would have to work for their birthday.

But 2000 also gives a little bit of wiggle room to Shermie being the baby. (If you don’t think Shermie is the baby, disregard this section). If Shermie IS the baby, then if he was born in spring of 1969 (late 68 at the earliest), then you can barely fit two generations of Pines in the space between 1969 and 2000. It would mean that both Shermie and his kid would need to be 15 when they had a kid, which is … not great, but not impossible? I dunno man, take it up with Hirsch. (Or just assume the baby is Shermie’s kid. Follow your dreams).

In 2013, Dipper and Mabel visit their Grunkle Stan in Gravity Falls.

Evidence:

The Northwest ghost died in what is described in the journal as “The Great Flood of 1863”. The Northwests are trying to keep this flood under wraps in J3, because they don’t want people finding out about the lumberjacks killed in the flood. The Northwest Ghost swore with his dying breath to come back 150 yrs after his death. 150 years later from 1863, is 2013.

The 1040 form that Stan is filling out his Tax Fraud note on in the truth-telling ep is a 2012 form. To file tax returns, you use w2s 1040s labeled under the PREVIOUS year

Sevral Timez shouts "2013"

1983 is 30 years before 2013.

Note: This would mean that the Stans are 62 at the end of the summer, which might mean that they are "pushing 70" as Stan describes himself.

okay so im not turning anons off because i still want to give people the opportunity to communicate with me and feel comfortable in doing so if they need to do it anonymously.

Scum's Anon Tips

Hello 👋 I have been on tumblr for around 8-9 years and have seen this website change a lot! Nowadays, I notice old information circling around regarding anons, and I wanted to share some information I've experienced through my time here.

This is not meant to be mean spirited, it's just meant to be helpful since I am noticing a trend of anon hate in the circles I'm around. Please feel free to add any corrections that you know to be true, or any additionals.

1. Blocking an anon does not put the user who sent the message in your block list.

(Tested and verified)

I see this one spread a lot and, from what I believe, this is from Way Back on tumblr from around the time I joined. It's possible that this was never a thing, and people just said it was, or this was a glitch that happened eons ago. Who knows! This site is held together by sticks and gum, so shit happens.

What happens instead is that it blocks the anons IP address . This is verified here by the site themselves (under 'other considerations'). Before they implemented having to be logged in to send anons, this made dealing with anon hate a bit more difficult since dedicated folks could try to bypass the IP block.

2. Blocking one anon message, out of a group of them, then refreshing, can show you how many of those anons were sent by the same person/IP.

(Tested, verified with note)

This is something I would do when I would seemingly get a batch of anon messages from 'multiple' people in the last few years (and recently as of March/April-ish of 2023), only to block one and then refresh, and have all of the hateful messages suddenly gone from my inbox. It's a helpful way to help realize that no, 282973 people are not slamming in to get mad at your characterization in a fanfic, its usually just one dedicated asshole.

Side note: last time I tried this, I did have a notif for one of the anons in my notifications, but not actually in my inbox. It's possible that this may be buggy at times. In my experience, aside from that single instance, it's repeatedly gotten rid of other hateful anons in my inbox.

3. Blocking someone who you believe/know sent the anon message does nothing to the anon message in your inbox.

Until recently, I thought that this would work! But as of 07/09/2023, I realized that this does nothing to any anons in your inbox. I had my roommate send me an anonymous message, then I blocked her account and refreshed my inbox multiple times: and it never touched the anon message. I think this is odd for tumblr to do, but it may line up with some sort of privacy protection they have.

So if you have any worries if someone sent an anon message, this is not a way to test it out.

4. (A Tip) If you find yourself getting a lot of anon hate...

Not a great answer, but one that is needed to be heard: Stop Answering Them. We've all been online long enough to hear the 'dont feed the trolls' mantra, but seriously. Answering the ask means you can no longer block Or report it. In point 2 I mentioned it's usually one dedicated asshole, but if it isn't, then you're just opening yourself to more anon attacks. If you Badly want to answer it- screenshot it, then answer that way, because at least you can still block and report the OG anon. I think this is even more important now that users have to be logged in to send anon messages. They can't play with IPs as much anymore with this feature, so it's more important than ever to block and report em now.

Reporting can be done on mobile and desktop version of the site, as well as blocking. Please, always utalize these. You're not a 'coward' or whatever for curating your online experience.

Additional Note:

When it comes to information spread about anons, a good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if it seems to be in line with any possible privacy issues with tumblr. The point of anonymous messages, good or bad, are to be anonymous. It does not make much sense for a site to allow you to easily see who sent the anon in that context. Especially when, on the official Help section of the site, they have confirmed that even staff supposedly doesn't know who sent said anon ask (It's under 'What About Anonymous Asks?'). So why would they have their site (alibet held together with sticks and gum) show you very easily who sent the anon?

On their side of things, I hope this is a little fixed now that we have to be logged in to send messages, so that they can take action on the accounts sending hateful shit.

Not stuff you heard through the grapevine, as there is so much misinformation on that vine, but things you yourself have experienced and have Worked. It'll be helpful to know if your tip is something from before the 'must be logged in' change or not as well!

1. i feel like a lot of "banxiety" could be lifted if they just used a lighter touch with penalties. they theoretically have a strike system (i received a strike once for "taking advantage of a bug" back when the announcement forum got unlocked and people were posting silly stuff on the main page). why not give people who they discover funneled stuff a strike instead of an automatic ban? especially if they haven't done it for years. i dont know, it's just like, what are we even losing when one person is doing better than us on FR? there isn't a high score screen of earning money or anything. is it just that if a person is making dragon cash that way then they're not buying gems? i dunno. there's just no way to win FR you know. so why does it matter

2. Y'all think staff ever takes items from the hoards of accounts that have been permanently irredeemably closed for raffles? I've always wondered that. Like if an account is never going to be accessible ever again, then all the items in the hoard/vault would just be completely lost. I've wondered if they've taken permanently retired items from accounts like that and used them in raffles

3. It feels unfair to those who put tickets into the raffle just for one of the prizes to not be handed out. I know it’s not that deep and we probably wouldn’t have won anyway but it feels somewhat scummy? Like “Yeah we actually aren’t giving out this prize to anyone who put tickets in the raffle and we’re actually going to raffle it off again, buy even more tickets lol”

4. All this talk about multi accounting has got me thinking about how FR is honestly one of the most lenient petsites I've ever played in that they LET YOU start over with a new acct. Any other site I play on would nuke any new accts you make after being banned for multi and IP ban you forever. No exceptions. Imo there's really no excuse for multi to begin with (just read the dang rules) but still! You get a second chance where most would still boot you.

the amount of people out there who refuse to respect explicitly clear boundaries have me so close to making a proper DNI, bc i swear. either these people dont actually read any of our rules, or their silly lil brains twist our words so they believe it somehow doesn't apply to them!

been seeing a lot of pr.o.sh.i.pp.ers who either are covert about being That Way, or will even outright lie about being against it, but openly condone and promote those who write se/xual/ized pr romanticized pe/do/ph/ili/a and shit. I've seen with my own two eyes people write in their rules that they don't condone it, yet when people warn them that they are interacting with people who actively produce such content, they throw a fit, calling it dr/a/ma. and somehow believe that just because they don't write such content personally, then they're not pr/os/shi/p, even tho they knowingly interact with and promote some of the worst ones out there.

So i want to be explicitly clear. do not follow me if you: - are p.ro/sh.i/p, - condone p/ro/shi/p.pers - support p/ros/hipper/s - will knowingly and deliberately put pr/o/s/hi/pper/s on my dash via your interactions with them - think being warned about p/ros/ipp/ers is d/ram/a, and will continue to interact with them even tho you KNOW the content they produce - think that just because YOU dont write pr/o/sh/ip content means you're not a p/ro/sh/i/pp/er even though you knowingly support them basically, if you are going to knowingly and deliberately put pr/osh/ipp/ers on my dash (excluding c/al/lou/ts), stay away from me. if you are unaware if someone is one, thats fine! but please be receptive to warnings so that way i don't have to see their shit on my dash.

i could blacklist urls, sure. but it makes me highly uncomfortable to interact with anyone who even condones this shit, even if they dont write it personally. thats still pr/os/hip.

i also want to clarify, this does NOT apply to those who write dark content, but who does not romanticize or se/xua.liz/e it. it also doesn't apply to those who have immoral, unreliable narrators for muses, but do not share the same thoughts. if your muse romanticizes something gross, but you as the mun do not? thats fine! i LOVE dissecting and analyzing unreliable narrators and characters! but if you, as the mun, produce content of illicit relationships in a way that's meant to be tantalizing and ar/ous/in/g to the audience? FUCK OFF.

you can still make it abundantly clear when an unreliable narrator finds this content alluring, but the audience isnt supposed to.

for example, the book Lo/li/ta. We are not supposed to believe in Hu/mbe/rt when he portrays D/olo/re/s to be this infatuating sed/uctr.ess. But in the moments where we see reality outside of his narration? We see a normal middle school girl. That is the key difference between pro/sh/ip.pers and writers who explore dark content for what it is. One is meant to s/ed/uc/e, and the other is meant to elicit horror from its readers.

And again, i repeat myself:

Even if you, personally, do not write this sort of content - if you knowingly SUPPORT or CONDONE this content, FUCK. OFF.

i dont want this content anywhere near my dash. so dont follow me if you interact with them! because, inevitably, they will end up on my feed!!

condoning or supporting pr/o/shi/pp/ers makes you one too. if you support these freaks, you are a freak. for the love of god, i am so fucking tired. if yall would just stay in your lane and didnt interact with those who are abundantly clear in who they dont want interacting with them then none of this would be an issue. it only becomes an issue when yall think you have some sort of special privilege and that boundaries don't apply to you.

tldr: people who dont know what boundaries are have me so close to making a dni, bc apparently thats what it takes to get these ppl to comprehend that they're not some special exception to the rules

i'll be real. you blazed a post onto my dash. i'm gonna block you. rules are rules. figured i'd help you out before i do.

you really want to know why the youtube algorithm is bad? positive feedback loops. not positive as in good, but positive as in they grow larger over time.

youtube's recommendation algorithm is partially based off of what it learns from users. it takes in all kinds of data on what users watch--the uploader, the title, the tags, the thumbnail, the description, anything it can glean from the audio and visuals, whatever. you name it, google's probably holding it. they dont have yottabytes upon yottabytes of data for nothing.

importantly, though, is that they also keep track of what the user watches Next. see, google (as with most social media that uses an ad revenue model) will run studies, where they try out different experimental algorithms created from viewership data on different users and see what is more likely to get users to click through. how they create these experiments is pretty complicated, and i'll save you the technogore. think of it as making tons of algorithms that each think different combinations of aforementioned viewership data at different amounts are the reason why that viewer made their choice, then projecting that onto all users to inform future suggestions. trust me, that's the easy way to think about it.

what makes it a positive feedback loop? well, recall that i said the algorithms are created on viewership data. the successful one(s) is/are then used to inform future recommendations. that data is then used to further experimentally tweak the algorithm. the choices user make influence the algorithm. what influences the choices users make? the algorithm. as time moves on, the algorithm becomes more and more biased until youtube decides to make more dramatic changes to influence things in a different direction (remember the change to favor runtime? then to favor watch-through?)

here's where i get all communist, and why i felt compelled to write all this. youtube isn't fixing shit about this system. why would they? people are clicking through recommendations at insane rates! they're watching more videos! and sure, a general societal right-wing bias might have positive feedback looped into turning the website into a facism pipeline, but google is making so much fucking money from gathering an insane amount of information from users that can be used in ad targeting the whole time. even if youtube itself struggles with profitability, even if people like. kind of say stuff about the problem but never really do anything about it at a large scale, even if people are being redpilled, why should google care when they make more money than anyone could even comprehend? until capitalism is overthrown, there will be a shit algorithm.

blocking channels is a start, but there will always be more shitty things to block (just like how there's always blazed posts for me to block the OPs of). apps that bypass youtube accounts and privacy loss (youtube vanced and newpipe) are privacy tools first, kind of hit or miss when it comes to the algorithm. never looked into the source code of them, but, if you ask me, it's either some amalgamation of everyone's recommendations who use those apps, a "default" algorithm, or one that's kind of tailored to you as youtube slowly worms its way into identifying you by your device and ip address.

point is, dont hold your breath waiting. keep looking for tools, keep spreading the word, keep finding ways to support content you like so the artist isnt reliant on ad revenue. dont keep throwing your money at tumblr, though, they really dont need it. they really never needed it. buy yourself a nice fuckin sandwich. everybody deserves a nice sandwich.

Basically I'm sick and tired of people like Manga_Kamen, Vexed Viewer, WatermelonCube, and other people raging about how they hate something that others like, and how people are supposed to hate what they hate.

I just wanted to give people the opportunity to remove those hate videos from their search results, so that they can at least find what they're looking for, using Youtube search.

Hi hello! Regarding song commissions, would you do one off of a fanfic? I know that could end up a bit iffy, and I thought I'd ask before doing more than vaguely daydreaming about it

depends on the focus!! ive definitely written songs inspired by licensed ip, but my rule for myself is that i write about the thing that inspires me about the characters/setting and not in a way that names it. like if i was gonna write a song “”about the x-files”” i might write a song about a relationship between two people thats meaningful and significant beyond words, so they just never talk about it. thats the part i love, that can exist Outside of the media, that does not belong to anyone

so that to say, YES! just 1) please be transparent with me that its from a fanfic so i know what line im walking, i promise i dont judge or care! and 2) since youre writing fanfic, i already know youre thoughtful and aware of what that Thing is that makes your take on the story tick - make sure thats at the forefront of your pitch, and that the original IP is secondary to it

COMMISSION BATCH 5 IS OPEN!!

The previous batch is done, but money is still tight, and I need to keep the funds coming. I will take a short break after the opening of the coms, but I will be accepting commissions orders during the break. I just wanna take care of some personal art. I enjoy drawing for you guys and being both generous and experimental, but rent fund is important, and I can only offer so much at a time. I am still close to landing full scale employment, but I am not there yet.

I know I added greyscale to the line art, and I love doing that. In my regret, made the choice to make greyscale a seperate item rather than something I randomly add to the lineart tier. I am sorry, but rent money is important. Living in CA isn't cheap.

I appreciate your understanding and I am sorry for the inconvenience. I love you guys and I love drawing for you all. And if I could, I would draw for free, simply because I see art as a hobby rather than a profession.

I just don't like the current modern superhero genre and its oversaturation.) -Certain Copyrighted characters and IPs (There can be some exceptions) -Other people's OCs without their permissions (There is drama around it. Dont drag me into any more drama.) -Characters that are or look underaged (I have the FBI on speed dial) -Diapers fetish (just...just no) -Political art (Should I even need to explain why?). -politically incorrect shit (You are more mature than this.)

To order to order a commission from me, You need something of a social media presence. at least a DA, Twitter, or most importiantly FA, that you had for some time at the time of ordering a com. This allows me to screen for security purposes.

I will not be accepting commissions from:

-Newly created FA or social media pages, be it burner accounts or whatever. -social media individuals that have a significant degree of controversy within the last year or so. I want to avoid controversy. -individuals under the age of 18. -Individuals that have a habit of hiding their behaviors behind "muh free speech." I would rather be with mature people thank you very much. -MAPS (should I even explain?) -People who make their political views their own personality (I dont want you as my customer base anyways)

The second thing to fill out a google form, this has everything you need to make an order from teir to whether you want the com to be nsfw or not.

Major thing to note: Do remember that I reserve the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason. So my apologies in advance.

Ive never understood IP I guess. I dont see whats wrong with doing the same meme in your own words or drawing the same art in your own style. Like yuore still putting effort in so I dont see it as stealing. I only see directly reposting the exact same thing as stealing. But IG I also dont have a lot of original creativity myself. Like when I write stories its usually writing an idea I saw someone else write first and I put a lots of hours into it but sometimes people get mad anyway because they say you shouldnt write anything anyone else has written even if its in your own words and you arent making money so IDK. I think its a topic different people have different feelings on. So some people may think its weird to get upset over and others might be confused like me. IDK who's right LOL.

I agree with you, I also don’t see people seeing a pose or whatever and being like “I want to draw my character like that” as stealing- but the thing is that if artists are getting upset about it then I go “well that’s probably an issue with them then”. Just because I don’t understand it doesn’t mean it’s not an issue. A lot of examples of “art theft” I see in my mind isn’t art theft. But it is the rules agreed upon in the online art community, so I’m not going to argue or breach those rules because I’m not a part of that online space, I don’t understand it, and it’s none of my business to go and argue with them. There’s a lot of identities I don’t understand within the queer community but I’m going to defend them anyway. Because it’s none of my business and we should be supporting each other instead of trying to poke holes in other’s identities or whatever and telling them they aren’t “real” queers. It’s the same concept. I’m not going to go around telling people who say they’ve had their art stolen that “it’s probably just a coincidence” and they need to “calm down” because 1. If someone is hurting because they feel like their art has been stolen I’m not going to add insult to injury and 2. It’s none of my business! They’re allowed to complain about it! Even if it’s not true their feelings are real about it! Does that make sense? And intellectual property can 100% be stolen. Like idk even if it’s a weird thing to get upset over to me or you or whatever I’m not going to go up to that person and be like damn you really crying over this lmao get a life because that’s just? Rude?
