I bought a commission recently
And
I love it!
Tumblr media
I wanted to see art of Billy and Captain Marvel hanging out together bc I really liked the concept of them being separate entities/people by @wolfsbanesparks so I commissioned an artist to draw it~ it's my wallpaper now
Artist is @/kkmy31 on twitter (bc careful, it's twitter, and this person also draws a lot of nsfw stuff)

I got the cutest little moon shaped trinket dish today when I was out shopping with my fave sibling and my husband (I love shopping with the two of them, my husband and sibling get along really well). I can't wait to be able to make my altar to Nyx again so I can put it on there

Due North | knifemartin
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(IDs in alt text)
I've been reading a lot of Rusty Quill Gaming fanfiction lately, and @knifemartin's series Due North is one of my favorites and immediately climbed to the top of my to-bind list. I love its explorations of grief, hurt, comfort, and hope, and it really made me love Carter as a character so it will always have a special place in my heart.
This was the first bind that I made after the Rengade server's February bookbinding event, Binderary. I'd attended a ton of workshops and subsequently bought a bunch of new tools and materials, and I got to use all of them and more on this book! Of particular note are the edges, which mark my first time chisel trimming a book and painting the trimmed edges; the endbands, which are my first go at double-core style sewn endbands; and the title page, which includes my first time using vellum in a bind as well as a sample of my first batch of hand-marbled papers. This book is also my first that uses short-grain paper, and I'm delighted at the feel of it and how well it drapes!
Overall, I'm absolutely thrilled with how this book turned out, and I can't wait to finish my own copy and add it to my shelf 💜

After three weeks of almost obsessively working on this project I've finally completed it! @mouseonamoose amazing fanfic Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach (read it if you haven't already) is a hardcover book I can hold in my hands and put on my bookshelf now. It's not perfect, I made some mistakes, but I'm proud nonetheless:
Tumblr media
The headbands I made red and black on the top for everyone's favourite demon and the bottom I made white and gold because you can't have that demon without his favourite angel:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And how could I not think about Crowley and Aziraphale when I found this amazing design of the words demon/angel? I just had to put that on the end papers. I hope it's not only me who can see the word demon this side up and angel if you flip it on its head:
Tumblr media
And here a bit more of the insides:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thank you mouseonamoose, not only for writing this amazing story but also for inspiring me to pick up this hobby of bookbinding again. I can't wait to read it again now.

Since you can't buy fanfiction as actual books I started a project of binding my favourites myself back in January. During my training to become a librarian I spent a few weeks in the library's bookbinder workshop and learned everything I needed for this project. The steps I didn't remember were helpfully provided by the internet.
So far I finished 5 books, with another 17 stories ready to be formatted and then printed.
If you're interested, the photos and details are under the cut. But: this is no manual on how to do it, just a post about a little bit of the progress and the finished products.
Alright, if you're still here, I guess you want to see the photos.
Tumblr media
The only picture I took of the sewing process. That part was honestly the most fun.
Tumblr media
Trying out the fitting of the cover before glueing it on.
Tumblr media
That's what the book looks like before I glue on the cover...
Tumblr media
... and after the glueing. (No, this is not the same book. As I mentioned, I made 5 😆)
Tumblr media
Since I don't have any other way to do it I wrote the title and, if the space was enough, the author on the spine.
Tumblr media
The same book finished. I'm in love with the paper I used for this 😍
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here are all 5. The marble effect fabric was definitely worth the money. It looks even prettier irl 😍
Can't wait to continue with the others, but need to get a few more materials first.
If you're interested, here's the full list of the fics I bound so far, including links to the stories:
Out of Time by @zuppizup
A Snowfall Kind of Love by @jelzorz
Ichor and Blood by im_too_tired_for_this
A Dragon Kiss always ends in Ashes by purplejaguar326156
Looking for a Way to break in by @thosefiveadoraburrs and @raayllum
I'll update this whenever I'm working on the next one.

A recent hobby I've added to my never-ending list of hobbies is bookbinding. I'm still learning with each attempt, but I'm pretty proud of this one. My page trimming needs practice, but the decal I made on my Cricut turned out better than I had hoped :) Now I have a nice hardback edition of the fanfiction trilogy @starry-nightengale and I wrote almost 10 years ago. I can't wait to read it to my son when he is old enough to not try to chew on it :P
Also this is the first book I've laid out in Affinity Publisher (sadly, since I no longer work full-time, the Adobe programs don't jive with my budget anymore). Indesign is still the best of the best, but I'm impressed at the features Affinity has.

Twist Me to the Left by @grapefruittwostep
My foray into learning bookbinding using Zutara fanfiction continues! This time I wanted to see if I could figure out a process that would let me print covers instead of using bookcloth. I'm really pleased with how it turned out and I'm excited at the flexibility this will give me with cover design.
Speaking of the cover: The CDs on the back cover is free clipart from here. The look of the colored spotlights in the background was meant to just be inspired by the cover of This is How You Fall in Love, but comparing the two in hindsight my spotlights are much more similar than I intended. If the book wasn't already complete (or if this wasn't just a private copy for my personal library) I'd go back and make changes to differentiate the art more, but since I can't I want to make sure that credit is given where it's due.
Katara wears a blue dress since she's described as wearing blue dresses/ skirts several times, and then her turquoise chucks. Her arm tattoos are a bit less extensive than they are described as being. In the book, Zuko mainly wears black band t-shirts, but I wanted to bring in a little more color to his look so he has a red shirt instead. His guitar is red with a flame sticker that's the logo of his dad's company.
I followed the video series for a rounded, case bound book by DAS Bookbinding on youtube. I also took inspiration from @omfgreylo’s fanfic book binds for things like including a page with the AO3 details and a QR code that leads to where the story is posted.
I'm very excited about how this turned out, and can't wait to keep working through my list of Zutara fanfics I want to bind! If you haven't read Twist Me to the Left then you should go do that. Thank you again for letting me bind your story @grapefruittwostep!

I FINALLY FUCKING FINISHED IT!!!
Tumblr media
It's a TARDIS diary!!
It had so many steps and it took me so much time I can't believe it's done!!
Creation process and story under cut
So, I had that one blank mini sketchbook I wasn't going to use and I decided to make sure I do use it in the future. I completely disassembled it leaving the page block and three pieces of cardboard separate. At first I was planning to only redo the cover, but I soon realised that I didn't really like the page block because it had very few pages, so the next thing I know I was binding a whole new page block...
Tumblr media
To do the TARDIS semi 3D design I did a lot of cutting cardboard... Then I had to glue little strips of paper between the slits because otherwise it would look bad (cardboard is hollow inside) and also it would be better to paint on a white base. Then I slapped a big sheet of paper over it all and pressed the indents afterwards so it would look uniform. I also had to hand mix the blue colour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And after painting it I was like... What if the paint loses colour quickly or worse, colours everything it touches?! So I decided to varnish it... I bought some spray varnish, but it said that I have to use it at 15-25°c temp and I had to do it outside (as in very ventelated space, and our house is almost unventelatable, so yeah, the balcony/outside) because otherwise I would suffocate or smth. However the funny thing was that it was winter... And so I had to wait until spring came and it was warm enough to do it...
So yeah, that's the story.
THIS IS MY FIRST EVER SELF BOUND BOOK!!!
The only flaw it has is that it doesn't open to lay flat, because I was a fool and knew nothing about bookbinding... But still I'm very proud of it!

hey everyone! now that i've finally made some measurable progress, i wanted to share with y'all that i've recently picked up bookbinding as a hobby!
my first bind is of my recent one piece oneshot requiem for lab rats, a what-if character study & action fic for if king fought sanji instead of zoro during the raid on onigashima. that fic is my BABY, truly my pride and joy, so i thought i'd be a good place to start.
Tumblr media
here are a few snapshots of the typeset! above is the inner cover & quote page, and below i've shared some of my favorite interior spreads -- there are 21 (very painstakingly cleaned, redrawn, spliced, and edited) manga panel illustrations throughout the typeset. can't wait to share more once it exists as a hard copy, and i'll post the completed typeset for free download once it's finished if anyone wants to bind it themselves!
(shoutout to @umbrace-rambles for drawing the fic's icon, a little angel lab rat with king's wings and a tail curled like sanji's brows <3)
read the fic here!
more page spreads below cut! (please look, they took me fucking forever.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i adore the illustration on the last page, but alas, it's too much of a spoiler for the ending just in case anyone seeing this hasn't read the fic yet. hope you like these small previews! excited to go further down this rabbit hole and share my descent into bookbinding hell with you <3

Given that Myrtle’s mother in Bookbinding was a suffragette, do you think Tom and Myrtle’s children would have a feminist streak in them? I’d like to think that political streak would be passed down to any daughters (or sons!) in the family. A gaggle of Riddle-Warren children leading a 70s feminist group at Hogwarts sounds like a wonderfully chaotic time.
ohh anon, i love this question - especially because it lets me give a shoutout to probably my favourite incidental character in bookbinding, myrtle's formidable mother, astrid warren, who once threw an orange at the prince of wales in a bid to secure women the vote.
it was important to me when writing this story that myrtle had a happy home life - not only to counteract the bullying she experiences at hogwarts and to stop tom's conviction that muggles fear and loathe the magical in its tracks, but to allow me to indulge one of my favourite things to complain about regarding the harry potter series: how it devalues the power of love-as-comfort in its glorification of love-as-sacrifice.
both myrtle and her mother recognise the inherent, and often overlooked, value of cups of tea and home-cooked meals and gentle nagging, especially when the person on the receiving end has never encountered anyone who cares enough about him to worry about feeding him up.
which is going to lead, i think, to all seven riddle children [it's the most powerful magical number!] inheriting their grandmother's feistiness [none of them are going to put up with their mam being called a mudblood by some inbred prick, i'll tell you that much], but also inheriting her commitment to something which is often overlooked when we think about political organisation, especially feminist political organisation - the centrality of caring and domestic labour [and the - usually - women who perform it] to any successful movement.
[or: molly weasley cooking for the order is as important as her going out on combat missions.]
which is to say, in metallurgy - the sequel to bookbinding i'm currently writing - the riddles are causing chaos in the halls of hogwarts [largely because they've all got their dad's cheekbones] which they are then fixing by luring their various pureblood paramours round for shepherd's pie and a lesson in the vulgarity of the class system and what it means to have parents who actually like you.
eligible purebloods being corrupted include lucius malfoy and both bellatrix and sirius black. grandma can't wait to absolutely serve at the weddings.

Question to all: I've been working on a fic for a very long time, and at some point realized that I loved the characters so much I never want to stop to write about them, so now I'm plotting out a five fics series.
I already created a bunch of graphics for it, as well as extras (it's a college AU, so I created the syllabi, the dining hall menus, literally everything), and I can't wait to begin writing the sequels.
But I really, really want to have these fics be bound and looking like actual books. I work with indie authors so I already know how to format everything, I already have the covers on hand, so... where could I get these fics printed and bound?
I know I can't use sites like Lulu, so... is there any fic-friendly alternative? Should I look for someone who binds fics in their free time? Or should I just throw money at the closest craft store and do it myself?
Any help is apprecciated!
--
Bookbinding is pretty fun. I took a class as a kid. And there are plenty of people who'd probably accept a commission to hand-bind something.
As for printing, anyone have thoughts?

FAQ:
Can I bookbind your fics?
Please read this so, so carefully, because it's important. If you are designing, printing, and binding the fic yourself for the purpose of keeping it or gifting it on to a friend, then yes. Absolutely. Nothing would make me happier. Fandom is punk and community-oriented and exists outside of the capitalist economy, and I would love nothing more than to see the results of your incredible craftsmanship. But if you're using Lulu or another for-profit printing company to do it, if any money is changing hands at any point in the process, then the answer is a resounding fuck no. If you're confused by this policy, I'm begging you to take the time to read on here about why this trend is such a danger to all of us who write and read fanfiction.
Can I translate/record a podfic of your fics?
Ask me first, but I can't imagine a reason I wouldn't say yes. Just so long as they stay on AO3 and link back to the original fic where you have the option to pick This work is a remix, a translation, a podfic, or was inspired by another work. Please don't upload to Spotify.
Can I put your fic on Wattpad or another fic hosting platform?
No.
Can I put your fic on Goodreads or StoryGraph?
Absolutely not.
Can I feed your work to ChatGPT or another AI?
No! What's wrong with you?
Do you have an update schedule?
No. My current WIP is usually updated once or twice a week, but sometimes the wait is longer than that. I have a job and health issues and sometimes even a social life, and I do this on my own time because it brings me joy.
Can I write fic/draw art/create something else inspired by your fics?
Yes! And I hope you understand what a compliment that is! Like I said before, fanfic is punk and community oriented and this is a folkloric tradition. You actually really don't need my permission to do this, but I would ask that any fic stay on AO3 and link back to the original fic where you have the option to pick This work is a remix, a translation, a podfic, or was inspired by another work. For anything else, I'd love to see the results of your creativity, and would just ask that due credit and a link back to the original fic are clearly present somewhere.

2023 in (bookbinding) travel
so i've been procrastinating big time since i got back from the US because i was jetlagged for something like 2 and a half weeks and was going to bed at 9pm, and then promptly caught COVID so i've been a bit MIA from bookbinding for a while. am shaking off the last dregs of it as we speak; am thankfully feeling much better.
i had the privilege of being able to attend comic con in san diego this year, and took great advantage of the fact that the usual transit spot is LA - i promptly hit up the California chapter of Renegade Bindery sometime last year and was like please please can i visit and thankfully they said yes!!!
this was one of two meetups for the US - i had the great privilege of meeting some other cali and non-cali members who were attending comic con - no photos but i did do a surprise book trade with @rhipidurafan of @fantailpress, which brought about the apocalypse great hilarity of the catfish calamity book trade.
guys... there are 11 million works on AO3, of which 70K of them are in MDZS. it should be statistically fucking impossible that we would both decide 'oh hey, this seems like a cool fic to bind as a surprise'. AND YET. AND YET! the gloriousness of the accidental acquisition of the same fic bookbind. WE BOUND THE SAME FUCKING FIC.
i think we laughed ourselves silly for something like 20 minutes straight. the lesson in a two way trade is to make sure there is a third person who knows exactly what the fuck is being bound to prevent things like this from happening in the future.
ALSO RHI'S COPY IS FUCKING GORGEOUS and i have spent many moments stroking it. ITS ROUNDED AND BACKED AND THE ENDBANDS! très magnifique, i can't even.
Tumblr media
on coming back from san diego, i had the opportunity to hit up the LA chapter and GODDAMN, i had such a good time screaming about their lovely books and their lovely selves. i was also so kindly gifted pins, engraved and 3D printed tools, crepaldi paper and handmade stickers - THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU GUYS - YOU ARE SO AMAZING. some of the members came specially to meet me from hours away and i am so fucking touched, y'all.
Tumblr media
the next day i also had the pleasure of being brought around the area where i was staying to have brunch and do a little bookbinder shopping and it was great.
i had such a lovely time meeting each and every one of them, my god. i didn't have the best time at comic con, which was very tiring and transport around LA was challenging as fuck without a car, but getting to meet renegade members was really, really fucking worth it and the best part of my trip, hands down.
again - this probably would never have been possible if i hadn't gone on my first Renegade meet up in March where i met the esteemed @celestial-sphere-press in Japan who brought me to eat excellent ochazuke and to explore the queer nightlife and didn't turn out to be a catfish (EHEHE) so really, i owe it all to des for helping me instill some confidence in my family that i wouldn't be kidnapped and murdered while meeting strangers on the internet.
Tumblr media
anyway future travel plans potentially may include ??? GREECE WITH RENEGADE??? i am EXCITED and AM THRILLED AND CANNOT WAIT.
