songs the Sakamaki bros would have sex or make-out session to
WARNING: NSFW (if you’re below 18, just don’t freakin’ read things like this, okay?)
Tumblr media
DISCLAIMER: I just got this idea ‘cause an acquaintance told me she turns up the volume of her radio when she does it with her gf (that’s all the story ‘cause I ain’t curious about her sex life)
SHUU SAKAMAKI
No brainer. Classical music. PERIOD.
Sometimes it would be the violin covers or orchestra pieces he always listens to since he’s lazy to change the music
Other times, it would be songs that came out from a sensual mixtape
Most of them probably from Two Feet or Cigarettes After Sex
Or even from LANY or The 1975
A rare one from the playlist would be Ariana Grande’s off the table
Shuu likes it slow, teasing you during foreplay
But he ain’t a lazy lover
Likes it when he makes you feel every sensation
Also a sucker for comfort sex so get ready for sad songs
Probs from Mitski’s “I Want You” or Lily Allen’s “Littlest Things”
No BDSM
But if you want to, he can notch a few things 😉
REIJI SAKAMAKI
Another classical music fan
But this one likes the haunting pieces, ya know the ones used when you’re escaping a dark castle or running from a monster at the forest
Idk why he sees it romantic but for him it sets the mood
Thinks of sex as a means to be a sadist
What the actual fvck
Would also play Kiss of Fire by Hugh Laurie or Bei Mir Bist du Schon by The Andrew Sisters
Light BDSM
Would also test out his poison on you
He’s gonna make you cum either from pleasure or from fear
You like it either way so no complaining
AYATO SAKAMAKI
Welcome to the wild side
The music taste of this Ore-sama is undoubtedly rock
Heavy metal, pop, punk, goth, emo—the sound of the electric guitar in the background fires him up
I picture him turning up the volume so high he’s gonna hear complaints from the other brothers later on
Most of the time, he’d play songs from All Time Low, ACDC, Pierce The Veil, Fall Out Boy, Nirvana, etc.
He likes having wild and rough sex
Would probably leave hickeys
I also think he’s someone who would invite you out on a sex in public
Poor boy can’t keep his pants on
Would also pull up a prank where he would turn off the volume, insert the microphone, and turn the speaker back on so his S/O’s moans would be heard around the mansion
Also keeps a record of the moans as a form of blackmail
This jerk
Would get in a fight with Subaru for being so noisy
You’d probably not show up in the mansion for a few days because of that
But Ayato has his ways to convince you otherwise so fvck everything
“What a bad girl.”
“You’re the bad one, Ayato-kun.”
“Che! You love this Ore-sama so suck it.”
Suck what???
KANATO SAKAMAKI
The playlist of this one is as vast as the ocean
His music taste is a mix of all his brothers
So there are times he would play scary classicals or punk rock or sensual and playful based on his mood
I imagine him having comfort sex while My Immortal by Evanescence is playing in the background
But most of the time he’d play songs from Lana del Rey, Yohio, Panic! At The Disco, Blink-182, and Melanie Martinez
He actually turns the song “Tonight You Belong To Me” by The Lennon Sisters into a creepy one because of how possessive he is
For a sensual person, he prefers taking everything slow
Even your pain as he chokes you into oblivion
That’s some heavy BDSM sht
Would also play songs from My Chemical Romance like the ones from Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge or I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love
If he’s feeling romantic (which is rare), he would play Doja Cat’s Kiss Me More or The Cardigans’ Lovefool
Tho tbh it’s rare for him to turn on music because he would rather listen to his S/O’s moans and screams of pain as her heart beats faster in fear and anticipation
Would only turn them on if his S/O starts being noisy
LAITO SAKAMAKI
Alexa, play Sexy Naughty Bitchy Me
Did someone say whore?
This slut has the horniest playlist ever out of all the brothers
You'd probably mistake him as a stripper
Most of the songs would be from Rihanna, Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, Charlie Puth, Lana del Rey, etc.
Basically, mostly sex songs that are popular with teenagers
Would also have the same sensual sex playlist like Shuu has
He plays them all even if he’s being a bitch to his flings
Would most likely mess you up and make you begging for more
This slut
He is a mix of a wild ride with sadism and BDSM
His music and moans are so noisy Reiji banned him from having sex in the mansion
Even noisier than Ayato
Never stops being a perv even when he’s alone
Stay away from him at all costs
SUBARU SAKAMAKI
He’s emo. Period.
Whether it’s a slow or rough sex, there’s always an emo song playing in the background
Sometimes you ask him if he’s sad or what
“I am not sad. Why are you asking me that?!”
Poor baby car
He probs share the same music as Ayato’s but more on the self-loathing part
Mostly Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Pierce The Veil, Nirvana, and the likes
Is actually noisy he just doesn’t know it
He is even louder than the music he’s playing so the brothers would hear his moans than his S/O
This gives them the nightmares
They tease him later on about this, especially Shuu and Ayato
“You even said ‘scream my name, louder’ the fvck”
“I did not say that.”
“Oh yeah sure while she’s giving you the head.”
“I DID NOT!”
The living room will be in chaos again much to Reiji’s dismay

little women (2019) thoughts
that was very entertaining & lovely, and for the most part i thought that mixing up the narrative structure/chronological order was a great way to do a fresh adaptation of such an oft-adapted story. the ending kind of lost me, though, because it got too meta for my brain to handle.
like, i was basically math gif lady trying to figure out if jo actually married bhaer or not. what! is! the truth!!!!???? (screams) was the publication negotation stuff before bhaer came to visit her? was all of that sequence just made up? did it start being made up after he left the house? was it a weird sliding doors situation and jo march literally had two endings in different realities, as posited in an article my mom just read online? WHAT IS THE TRUTH???
(this also made me realize how absolutely feral i am re: jo/bhaer, because the idea of her not marrying him and her relationship with him being dismissed as trite and unimportant made me SO MAD!!!, even though i know that is basically what LMA was dealing with irl and that she married jo to him because jo had to marry someone at the end and she wanted to spite the jo/laurie lovers! but i don’t care, okay! i love jo and bhaer!! I LOVE THEM ALWAYS!!! respect my love for them, universe! i also found this movie’s take on his character quite charming and new.)
i really loved the focus on amy and laurie’s relationship growth and how we were given that before jo/laurie -- it felt really refreshing.
also, florence pugh really deserves an oscar for this performance just for being so consistently god damned delightful. justice for the much-maligned amy march at last!! it really was so great to my amy-loving heart.
random critique: i found the music sort of underwhelming in this. there were a few scenes where the score played over jo/laurie scenes that felt like they would’ve worked SO much better without background music.
laura dern burning her husband fictional amos bronson alcott with “you’re not an immigrant, dear, so shut up” or whatever was truly everything to mine and my bf’s obscure-american-transcendentalists-knowledge-loving hearts. YES. amos, you absolute mess. you well-meaning, insufferable human disaster.
timothee chandelier (as he is known in our house) is way less annoying to me when he is acting. when he’s in action, he’s perfectly all right! it’s only in still photographs, i’ve found, that his delicate elfin features deeply disturb and anger me. sorry, buddy!
i did find it pretty funny that after the media really hyped up that saoirse/chandelier magic for this whole press tour, this was the first adaptation i’ve seen where i felt like there was just NO romantic spark between them at any moment whatsoever. which, i guess, is consistent with lady bird, albeit in a very different context.
i think overall, out of the three little women adaptations i have now seen, 2017 is the best in terms of being a satisfying/pretty-thorough-and-faithful adaptation of the book itself, 1994 wins the most perfect, gorgeous, soul-nourishing movie ever made award, and this movie ... exists too!!! but in a fun way.
(YOU CAN PRY THAT “NOT EMPTY NOW” SCENE FROM THE 1994 MOVIE FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS!)

Only Time Will Tell- Brock Boeser 1.3
about/request: I really wanted to explore a relationship where you are ‘the other woman’ this is the result of that. I’m not sure how long this will end up so…. sorry.
warnings: cursing, i think that's it??
authors note: Sorry I took such a long time bringing this out, I didn’t know if anyone actually liked this or not. Remember that a lot of details in this story are made up or changed. Make sure to check out parts one and two, I fixed some mistakes and made some corrections.
timeline: march 2017
word count: 2614
Tumblr media
Hockey used to be a life for not just me, but my whole family. Three nights a week we would hop in my dad’s old work truck to cruise over to wherever Charlie, and in turn Brock, played. Often times we would meet up with the Boeser’s to grab the best seats right by the ice. Here my mom would yell to “Shoot the puck!” or boo at whatever call she felt didn't fit the crime. My dad would grab a couple of beers while talking to some guys he knew from his work. Small towns mean most people there he knew so he would rarely sit with us the whole game. Sometimes I would sit by my mom and Brock’s mom and sisters. Sometimes there would be kids from school or members from the team who were scratched I would sit by instead. Wren was often the one scratched. He never made it to practice on time and when he did he would spend more time talking to guys on the team then practicing. He was nice and seen grew to be one of the guys on the team I felt fully comfortable with. He understood what it was like to be the younger sibling and live in the shadow of our elders. His older brother Josh was team captain and lead them to 3 state titles in a row.
After the game, all of us would go out to eat. The Boeser’s and the Y/L/N’s and whomever joined along from the team. Dad would tell Charlie what to do better, of course Dad knew what it was like to play hockey. He played for the University of Minnesota until a really bad accident his sophomore year took him out. Charlie, and me too (at least for a little bit), just wanted to impress him. Often times dad would rag on Charlie until they got into a mini fight. Charlie would hitch a ride back with Brock and his family. My dad would then spend the whole drive home complaining that Charlie was never going to be as good as him if Charlie didn't take his advice.
Although the bad seeped into the good. The hockey rink was were my family was one. We all would come together to scream when number 6 would skate out. Cause no matter how awful things were going at home, the rink was a time of escape. It was when hot chocolate would warm cold fingers in the late second period or the high of sugar rush from skittles in the second intermission. It was a time to giggle at the little kids they brought out between periods. They wouldn’t yet be comfortable on skates so they would slip and fall or miss the puck completely. I couldn’t remember what it was like when Charlie and I were that young playing, but I like thinking we were better than that.
After he had died, I didn’t go to many games. There was no more hot chocolate or skittles high. No little kids falling or scoring on their own net. We never went out to eat after the games. There were no more arguments between dad and Charlie. The nearby rink which once held the best memories was purposely avoided at all times. Life went on, but each day seemed to hold some emotional punch of remembrance. Like one day, about 3 months after he died I came home from school and my mom had cleaned out his room. Neat piles of his clothes and pictures were placed in bins labeled “attic” or “giveaway.” His first skates, his autographed Detroit Red Wings Steve Yzerman jersey, and so much more was packed away to be set aside. His posters, CDs and other trinkets were thrown out or donated to a thrift store. I remember yelling at my mom that this is his room. She told me she needed to heal and that dad had been asking her to do it for two weeks. It was time to move on.
Since moving I had gone to no hockey games. And the Vancouver Canucks were not a bad team. They had just been having a difficult time in recent years. That didn’t make city pride for them any less. Any game night and the always crowded downtown streets turned into an obstacle only the bravest could handle. I never purposely put myself in a position to make the drive down to the stadium in the past 2 years of living in Vancouver. Occasionally I was invited to games by friends and classmates. I managed to get out of it every time too, but somehow escaping this invite seemed impossible.
It was Brock’s mother’s last night in the city before she had to fly back down to Minnesota to care for Brock’s younger siblings. I was extended an invite due to my ‘gracious’ hosting, my mother called me and told me how Laurie, Brock’s mother, raved how I grew into such a beautiful and caring young woman. So there I was crammed in Rogers Arena with 18,000 or so people. Laurie was on one side of me wearing a new Boeser jersey. I, even though I lived there awhile, owned no such fan gear and instead dressed in a thick sweatshirt. Natalie tried to get me to wear her old Trevor Linden jersey, but I high tailed it out of there before she could fish it out of her closet.
I loved hockey growing up, but standing here made me feel so out of place. Life had changed so much in the past two years. I was no longer the little tomboy with scraped knees and a messy ponytail. I longer wanted to play hockey. Now, I had put hockey out of my life so much that welcoming it back in right now felt traitorous to everything I had done to avoid coming here. Laurie was cheering and dancing. I guess there is nothing quite like the debut of your child in the NHL. Warm ups had just started so every guy was on the ice. It was easy to spot him in the white 6 with the dark blue background. I got chills the first time I saw it. Boeser was spelled out in big letters across his back. I imagined at that moment seeing Charlie out there. He would mess around and probably fall trying to impress some girls he would see on the front row. But he would be here, and he would be happy.
“I’m gonna go grab a beer, want one?” I asked his mom. Canada drinking laws are sort of amazing. I remember getting carded at a bar when I first turned 19. There was a split second of panic before I remembered I didn’t really need to be 21 up here.
“No, hun, I’m going to facetime the girls so they can see Brock on the ice,” she said grabbing her phone.
People were still pouring in from the front doors. Lines were long for everything even the escultors. I recognized some people from college and waved. They sported brand new jerseys and held in their arms peanuts and beers and popcorn. “We are gonna win!” They all said. People were invigorated with the call up of Brock. I was invigorated to get a beer in me that's for sure. Fifteen minutes and 16 bucks later I carried my two beers back to our spot. Laurie was finishing up her call to Jessica and Paul, Brock siblings along with Duke. I waved and said hi to everyone.
“Kid, you gotta come back more often,” Paul said. Paul was Brock’s oldest sibling and he always acted like he was so much older than the rest of us. Add on to the fact that I was the youngest in our family friend group, “Kid” has been my nickname well into my early teens.
“I will soon, I have just been super busy with college and all.”
It had been mine excuse through out my time here. For the first 8 months my parents begged me to come home. At this point they didn't even call me anymore. I guess it's far cause I don't call them up much too.
“Okay, I just wanted to make sure everything was okay back home,” Laurie said. “Are you guys staying up to watch the game?”
“Only for a little bit, I work early in the morning.” Jessica said. West coast games ended way too late to stay up watching them in Minnesota. While it was only 7:00 our time it was 9 there so the game could last until 12 or 1 am.
We all said our goodbyes as the lights dimmed. The Canucks opening video was being shown on the big screen while music blared in the arena. This was pump up time. As our guys skated out people cheered loudly. This game was supposed to be good. The Ducks always had a little rivalry with us. Add on to the fact that this was Boeser’s first home game and we were on a two-game losing streak. The team, and the fans, were hungry for a win.
Unfortunately moral lasted until the ducks scored for the third time in the first period. Add on when Montour scored to make it 4-0 in the second, people began realising that not much has changed even with Brock. As the zamboni entered the ice for second intermission, Laurie turns to me.
“So, your mom told me your in college,” she started. God, she was fishing. Mom’s think they are clever trying to get information by stating the conversation at a wide base value and steer it to the cavity in the situation.
“Yep, I go to the University of British Columbia for journalism,” I said sipping water I got after downing both beers in the first period.
“That must be a lot of work, what do you do for work?” she asks.
“I actually write for Vancouver’s newspaper, they pay pretty good, and I do work study, so they pay for so much of my tuition that isn’t covered by my scholarships and then I get some of the money”
“What do you do for work study?” she asks.
“My English professor needs an assistant. I’m basically his gopher. If he needs a book from the library or a coffee I go get it. I transcribe his lectures for any kid who misses class. Sometimes I will tutor kids or help them find good sources for their papers. It’s not too bad, maybe three or four hours per day and I get like 6 credits towards my English major.”
“Gosh, that's a lot. He needs you to do all of that?”
I shrug, “It sucks sometimes but the professor is nice so…”
“Your mom said that you haven’t come home since moving here.” They way she phrases the end of it is hard to respond to. It's not a question, more of a statement. She didn't sound mad or upset like my mom does when she says it. Laurie just sounds concerned. Her voice feels like a hug.
“It’s just soo much,” I start. “Charlie’s gone and mom and dad are splitting up. Mom met this new guy and he is so proper. Dad hasn’t even called me in two months because I said I’m not coming home for his huge labor day party. Plus I just got so much going on.”
“It’s okay to be hurt by what's going on, but don’t hide from it. Your parents love you a lot. They just don’t know how to love each other with so much hurt.”
“I don't know how to love them with so much hurt.” I mutter.
Everyone is buzzing as the crowd makes its way out of the arena. We may have lost, but Brock put one in the beginning of the third to excite the crowd. Laurie and I hang back to give Brock time to get ready. The team could have lost 10-1 and she still would have been glowing with excitement for Brock. His life was changing, and he was no longer the little boy who fell over on the ice. Where most parents would have been freaking out, Laurie handled with grace, something she has done her entire life. No matter the situation Laurie put on her big girl pants and muddled through.
We meandered our way to the locker room, showing our passes to the security guard. In the hallway we waited as different guys from the team joined up with their wives or girlfriends. They all hugged Laurie telling her how wonderful her son is. Everyone loved Brock. Well almost everyone.
Brock finally made his way out. His hair was still wet from what I was hoping was a shower and not sweat. He and Laurie hugged when he reached us. It was an awkward second or two while we figured out if we would hug or not. Wrapping my arms around him felt weird, almost as weird as the time we kissed. Yet there was a nostalgia in it too; we went always so awkward. In fact I remember a time in my life where I never thought we would ever be strangers. I remember once when I was about 12 and Brock was about 13, I had a dream that Brock and I were dating. The next day I remember being shy and awkward especially when he called me “Kid”. I went all pink and Charlie would not let it go for a whole year. Finally, when Brock asked a different girl to the joint 7th-8th grade dance Charlie let it go. I spent the whole night crying and accepted Thomas Miller’s invite. He had braces and dark hair and spent all night trying to kiss me. After the second slow dance song I joined up with my friends instead. The next day I heard a rumor going around that he said not only had we kissed, but that I let him touch my boobs. Charlie had been mad and cornered me about it. When I admitted it false, he said he taught Thomas a lesson. The next week someone “anonymously” shared a picture of Thomas at a birthday party sucking on his thumb with a stuffed animal. From there rumors spread he wet the bed every night.
We always had each others backs. It made we wonder how things ended up so differently. We all walked out together. As I reached into my pocket to order an Uber, Laurie offered to have them drive me back to my apartment.
“It’s too late for a young woman like you to hop in some random mans car.” she insisted.
    “”I couldn’t bother you guys,” I said.
“No bother,” Brock said. “Might be nice to see more of the city anyway.”
Thirty minutes later I lay in bed without make up and in an old, ripped up shirt from Natalie’s older brother that he left here. Natalie was already deep asleep when I got home with one of the Harry Potter movies on full volume. With school for both of us the next day, it was important to get as much sleep as possible. But as I laid there all I could think about was Brock’s hair and his cologne. I wished things could have ended better for us all those years ago. Maybe there’s time for change now. A girl could hope.
As I finally started to drift asleep my phone’s ping jolts me awake.
Brock Boeser has texted you.
Thanks for coming tonight. I hope to see you soon.
God, it’s going to be a long night.

So, you want to adapt Little Women for the screen.
There’s quite a challenge ahead of you, Gentle Readers. Might I help get you started?
What, you might ask are my own bona fides in suggesting that I might have the right to hold forth on such a topic? Very well, I first read Little Women in 1983. The first of countless times I have read it. Actually, I collect copies of it, and buy interesting ones whenever I see them. I’ve seen more than a few adaptations of it.
Tumblr media
The cover of my first copy. A giant volume, it was highly impractical to carry around. I did it anyway.
An initial challenge, any screen writer will tell you, is sheer length. Little Women was originally published as two separate books. So, an initial novel, and a sequel. By 1880, the two volumes were forever published as one.
Not only does this mean lots of pages and plot needing weeded out of your script, but it also means you’re going to have two climaxes and two denouements (seems about right for a female novel, yeah?), another challenge when adapting the two stories into a single film. (Imagine having to create a single story/plot from Philosopher’s Stone AND Chamber of Secrets).
Inevitably, what generally happens in past adaptations is that Part II gets greatly compressed and short-changed (and I do not doubt, Gentle Readers, creates some of the dissatisfaction among viewers and fans where the handling of Laurie’s proposal and the latter adolescence of characters and their romances/mates don’t land as they might if spent more time with).
Tumblr media
Actual illustration of Book One (on the left) and Book Two (on the right) once adapted for film.
According to Wikipedia: The book has been adapted for cinema; twice as silent film and four times with sound in 1933, 1949, 1978 and 1994. Six television series were made, including four by the BBC—1950, 1958, 1970, and 2017. Two anime series were made in Japan during the 1980s. A musical version opened on Broadway in 2005. An American opera version in 1998 has been performed internationally and filmed for broadcast on US television in 2001. Greta Gerwig is directing a new rendition of the novel, set to be released 2019.
Tumblr media
I could not hit “Add to Watchlist” fast enough.
So, the list of folks attempting to tackle Little Women is a long one, and not always a successful one. Some elements of the story are always going to play well, and frankly, be hard to mess up too much. But others? Others have some real sticking-points.
I’m not here to critique individual versions of adaptations today, Gentle Readers.
I’m just here to muse on the Big Questions that need solid answers when you’re ready to take on writing your adaptation.
Tumblr media
Someone contact them, I demand a recount.
1.       How much of the true lives of the Alcott family will we include?
It’s no secret at this point that Alcott took a lot of inspiration from her real life. But how much do we include? Do we have Thoreau invited over for dinner? Do we address some of the more radical notions of the Alcotts’? Do we just go ahead and make Father in the novel like Bronson in real life?
a.       How to explain/not explain the war and its effect on their lives
For contemporary audiences and readers, the incredibly matter-of-factness of the Civil War taking place deep in the background of the story will not resonate as much as it would to readers back in the day (It plays a bit like the Blitz in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe]. Perhaps it might be a good idea to bring it closer to the fore, beyond merely showing the girls in hoops, and coming across the occasional newspaper story or quietly dropped reference to a battle.
b.       How to address or not address the March’s contemporarily confusing socio-economic position (that of ‘genteel penury’)
Gentle people now in reduced circumstances is a tough sell intellectually when 2019 can allow most everyone to disguise their financial situation through extensive credit and things like those housing bubble mortgages given to lots of Americans. It’s going to be necessary at some point to explain or show how the Marchs, who have so little themselves, have (to our 2019-eyes) pretty clothes, a large, cozy house, the ability to take food and minister to the (much) poor(er) Hummels, and a house servant; Hannah. The humiliating fact that they can’t buy new gloves for a party does not...exactly track in the twenty-first century.
They’re much worse-off than the Bennets of Longbourne, whose financial crisis is on the horizon, but how can you show that to viewers unfamiliar with the notion of life as a fallen-from-wealth family?
2.       The persistent problematic-ness of Amy/Laurie
I will call to mind one adaptation, here, and Kirsten Dunst’s performance in particular. Singlehandedly, at the age of only *10*, she manages to sell the potential of not only Amy, but Amy/Laurie like no one else this tumblerian has ever seen. What a tragedy the film couldn’t have waited for her to grow up enough to also play Amy in the film’s second half.
Tumblr media
In a world where perfect casting is rarely obtainable, this child should have been nominated for Oscar. She out-performs every Amy March before or since, ad infinitum.
Like many of the romantic partnerships, which other than Jo/Teddy (which is not presented as romantic in Book One) are included only in Book Two, films front-loaded with Book One (I can’t think of one I’ve seen that wasn’t) find themselves racing to a conclusion, and every one of the three couples suffers in presentation and allowing enough time for viewers to be ‘courted’ by them into liking them.
Tumblr media
There’s simply not enough time left to work on all of them. So, it becomes a decision of which one is more important. Traditionally, as Brooke/Meg happens first, they get some character beats, but once Jo turns down Teddy...
Tumblr media
I can hear the screams of horror across the ages.
...adaptations become a fight between showing Amy/Laurie or Jo/Bhaer, yet both of which are true surprises to viewers not familiar with the story, and who need time to warm up and be seduced by these new pairings.
(Mind you, I do think Bhaer and Jo should sneak up on a viewer/reader, but there still have to be signs planted here and there that make it make sense when it actually does happen.)
3.       The age and age progression of the girls
Per the book, the story begins with Meg 16, Jo 15, Beth 13, and Amy 12 (aside: poor Marmee).
Tumblr media
A clear example of...impractical* casting for teenagers. (And Jo! In trousers!?) * but perhaps necessary for community theatre
As I mentioned a few lines ago, Amy becomes the most difficult to cast, here, as it’s unlikely a person can play both 12 and the age of Amy when she accepts Laurie. Amy may be only 16 or so when she accepts Laurie, but contemporary viewers are probably going to need a little more assurance she’s not a child bride by her looking more mature than 16.
Beth is frequently cast older, which is also troublesome. She’s 16 at most when she dies, and has been ill for some time. (So, easy to assume she wasn’t growing rapidly.)
Jo has to be able to play age 15 to 25+.
Tumblr media
Is that meant to be Jo on the left? Does that make Susan Dey Amy? Anyway, this production has the luxury of doing better on the ages of the girls. And they’ve got the inimitable Greer Garson as Aunt March!
Actors chosen can’t only be made-up to pass for certain ages, they also have to convince us they’re playing dress-up in the garret in the early portion of the film.
Tumblr media
In fact, Jo in particular with her harum-scarum ways isn’t deliberately trying to make constant mistakes and faux pas. She’s a kid who hasn’t yet grown up, with a kid’s energy and unbridled sincerity. Convince us of that.
4.       How to show both the importance and the growth of Jo’s writing
Filming someone writing is rarely moving to watch, and what’s more, writing is so misunderstood as a pastime or even a vocation, it doesn’t easily lend itself to being captivating when shown on-screen. And yet Jo’s writing is not only vital to the story, the growth and expression she finds in it are so deeply important to her character, and later to her romance plot with Bhaer. It’s got to be shown, and more than once. Moreso, or at least as much so as her temper, her mouth, and her lioness-like care for her sisters, it IS who she is.
Tumblr media
Where’s the silly hat?
5.       Flawed female characters that are meant to confront and wrestle with those flaws
Well, this is a big one, here. It seems to me we’re sort of operating by 2019 where that old saw of [man] girl vs. self isn’t really written about or shown. Our society at large has become very vocal about whoever we are being awesome and “never change”.
Which is just about as far from the notions in Little Women as one could get. Every one of the ‘women’ has something they need to work on, to grow and improve about themselves. From Meg not being able to get over their loss of money and status (remembered from when she was younger), to Amy’s dissatisfaction and constant desire to fine things, to Beth’s introversion, to Jo’s temper and intolerance of those who aren’t as bold and rebellious against society as her, and Jo’s inability to accept the change that will constantly be coming into all their lives as they grow.
Tumblr media
Nasty!
The Little Women Alcott wrote had lessons to learn, and directions to grow, contrary to what their gut reactions might be. You can call that a moralistic take on the novel, but you can’t argue that Jo has to change, and is expected to be her own instigator of that change within the novel(s). [It does seem like anymore in films that the only person we expect to change bad habits or wrong ways of being are actual ‘bad guys’/villains. And sometimes not even them.]
6.       Friedrich Bhaer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, that’s a mouthful. I don’t doubt that it always has been. The single, fan-dividing phrase of female literature. Am I right?
Tumblr media
Doing for umbrella representation until Gene Kelly came along.
You know the story, right? That Alcott was so DONE with readers after Book One assuming and expecting Jo and Teddy to live happily ever after, she was so frustrated (she had never wanted, nor intended for that to happen) with all the shipping she built a Bhaer bomb.
Tumblr media
@grrlinthefireplace would climb that.
And it’s still exploding readers’ and viewers’ minds today.
Why Professor Bhaer is the perfect match for Jo, and why their marriage and life together makes ultimate sense is certainly a post for another time, but I will say that if you’re still sore about it, take some time and reread the book as an adult, and see if you don’t also come to see the eminent sense in it.
That said, in any satisfying and successful adaptation, you’ve got to work hard to sell the man your heroine chooses over Laurie. Laurie’s had all of Book One and a good three-quarters of Book Two to endear himself to readers. Who’s this guy?
Tumblr media
Well, yes, that’s William Shatner...as Professor Bhaer.
This guy isn’t good enough for Jo. This is nonsense. “Weird old guy with an uncomfortable age gap with my fave.” Are not the sort of things you’re going to want to read in reviews.
First, you’ve got to cast him right. Hollywood’s not *overly* worried about distressing RL gaps in ages between their actresses and actors, you might know, and beards are actually pretty in right now. Bhaer’s not a babe by any means, but he’s got an accent he can work. And he’s in love with our fave.
Think an Alan Rickman-type (I know he’s not German), did you see how hot Kurt Russell made Santa Claus in that Netflix Christmas movie? Jeff Bridges, Pierce Brosnan? Probably all too old.
Tumblr media
Bhaer’s actually described as “middle-aged”, which means 40ish, to Jo’s 25 (when she accepts him). You know who’s 40ish in Hollywood? Gerard Butler, Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor, most of Hollywood’s Chrises, RDJ for Pete’s sake is 53. Give him a beard, and awkward social presence tick, and get him working on that accent, and I guarantee your audience will buy Jo’s attraction to him, and create a Twitter for his umbrella.
In the end, Bhaer is key to understanding that the novel isn’t trying to transform Jo into a woman who will fit into Teddy’s wealthy life and the social circles he has no plans to turn his back on. Bhaer is literally the embodiment of Jo making choices that she learns (and I daresay we are meant to learn) are right for her. She finds a man comfortable with who she is, who is in love with her brain as much as with the rest of her, who sees their coupling as a joint project, and who wants her to be the best her. (cough, cough, Gilbert Blythe prototype)
You’ve got to get him right, or what’s come before gets lost in dissatisfaction for Jo’s final, epic choice.
Tumblr media
Oh, look, a nice picture of a charismatic, bearded German actor. How did that get here?
Let’s be succinct here in the end, Gentle Reader. Little Women (Books One and Two) and Little Men and Jo’s Boys would make a splendid series. (Such as Anne with an E), there’s certainly enough episodic drama and plot to go around.
Keep that in mind when planning out your adaptation.
What film adaptation is your favorite, and why?
