WARNING: MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH!

"Ren, no!“ Hux stands in front of the containment lock, his hands flat against the transparisteel of the door. “Come out of there this instant! This is a direct order, Ren! I demand that you obey!”

“But I don’t answer to you, General” Ren says and keeps working, and it makes Hux unspeakably angry.

That fool.

That kriffing piece of Bantha shit!

How dare he?

Hux half turns and fires a furious look at Lieutenant Borma, who is standing with his back against the wall as if hoping to be swallowed by it. Definitely a preferable outcome for him compared to what Hux will do to him once this mess of a situation is solved. After all it was Borma’s dimwittery that caused the whole dilemma, by allowing a traitor access to one of the ship’s most critical places, the biohaz lab.

“What are you waiting for?” he barks. “Get him out of there! Now!”

Borma lowers his gaze to his feet, a behaviour absolutely unbecoming of an officer of the First Order.

“I can’t do that, Sir,” he says quietly. “It’ll kill us all if I do.”

“But he’ll die!”

“He’s already dead, Sir.”

“He’s right, Hux.”

When Hux whips around, Ren is back at the door, a lopsided smile on his face. He lays his hand where Hux’s is, their palms separated by a deceptively thin, yet almost unbreakable layer of transparisteel.

Hux almost thinks he can feel the warmth of Ren, but that is of course just wishful thinking.

“I managed to deactivate the explosive device and disconnect it from the life support system.” Blood trickles from his nose and catches on his cupid’s bow. Ren wipes it away with the sleeve of his tunic like it’s nothing.

Hux stares at the barely-there smear that is left behind, transfixed.

No, he thinks. This can’t be happening. This isn’t how things are supposed to go.

“Now that the immediate threat to the crew is resolved, I should think it’s time you prepare for the decontamination of this part of the chamber, Lieutenant.” He’s addressing Borma, but his gaze never once leaves Hux’s. “Leave us,”, he says. “The General will let you know when it’s time to proceed.”

Hux barely hears Borma’s hushed “Yes, Sir” over the deafening sound of the blood rushing in his ears.

“Ren,” he says, once they’re alone. “Come out. Please.”

A bloody tear slowly runs from Ren’s left eye, its sclera tinged slightly red, and Hux wants to scream. He has seen what this virus can do, had opposed to it being on board of his ship to be experimented on in the first place. But the Supreme Leader had been adamant, so Hux had relented.

Now, he wishes he had fought harder. Wishes, he had at least had more security installed, so that no one could have stolen a sample of it right from under bloody Borma’s nose!

“I can’t.” Ren still smiles, and it breaks Hux’s black, shrivelled little heart. “I won’t compromise the crew, Hux. I won’t compromise you.”

“I can’t do this without you,” Hux whispers. “Please don’t make me, Ren. Please.”

It’s so unlike him to beg, but he’d do anything – anything – for Ren to miraculously get out of this chamber alive. Even though he knows he’s not going to. The virus is lethal, fatal in over ninety-nine percent of cases. Ren’s chances are negligible at best.

“You can”, Ren assures him. He’s still smiling, the bastard, though, when he coughs, there are specks of blood staining his bottom lip. “And you will, Hux. For me, yes? You …” He coughs again, and this time he’s bending forward with the force of it, his knees buckling.

“Ren …” His eyes are stinging with unshed tears. He can’t bear it. He can’t bear to watch Ren die, but he can’t bear to look away either. “Oh, Kylo.”

“You’re the best thing that ever happened to me, Hux.”

“Armitage.” If he can’t give him anything else, he can at least give him that.

How Ren can still smile is incomprehensible to Hux. And it’s not sad or pained, no. It’s radiant, like being invited to use Hux’s first name is the greatest honour ever bestowed upon him.

“It was worth it, Armitage. For you.” He blinks, his eyes fully red now. “H-Hux?”

He sinks to his knees, and Hux follows suit on his side of the door.

“I’m here, Ren,” he sobs. What use is it to put up a brave front when there’s no one around to witness it. “I won’t leave.”

“Sorry … For putting you through this.”

Hux chokes out a laugh that feels like barbed wire in his throat. “You bloody idiot, don’t apologize to me for saving us all. I …” He takes a deep breath. “I love you, Kylo Ren.”

It’s the first time he’s ever put it in words, even though he’s pretty sure that Ren knows.

“You too.”

When Ren can’t hold himself up anymore, he leans his head against the transparisteel, and Hux does the same. He wants to cry, he wants to rail, he wants to hurt somebody. What he does instead is sitting there until Ren has taken his last, painful breath. Then he allows himself to weep for a minute, before he pulls himself together and up from the floor. He straightens his uniform before walking out through the door where Borma is undoubtedly waiting for him.

“Lord Ren is dead,” he announces, surprised at how unaffected his voice sounds. “Take all security measures required to get that virus off my ship!”

Borma visibly pales. “Sir, Lord Ren’s body …”

He congratulates himself for not showing any reaction. “Do whatever you must.” Then, he turns to a guard standing at attention nearby. “Has the culprit been arrested?”

“Yes, Sir, he’s in a holding cell, waiting for interrogation currently.”

“Take me to him,” Hux orders. “I will take care of the interrogation myself.”

A ghost is but an echo - a flickering shadow of distant memories. 

For this past Huxloween '22 I made a series of images of exiled!Hux looking mournfully at the last few flickering holo-stills he has left of Kylo and @wisekrakenwise animated them into a GIF image and wrote the above quote to increase the angst levels! After a really good recent conversation, it was brought to my attention that 'flashing gifs' very often don't mesh well with epilepsy. I'd forgotten to tag the original post with any type of warning for the flashing quality of the gif, so I've gone back and done so. My apologies for not tagging sooner-I will remember to do so going forward! Also, after a good suggestion, I wanted to share the series of still frame images that make up the original gif, so that everyone can enjoy it that way too! Love y'all, kylux fans! Have a good 2023!
