Where the Devil Roams (2023) was a great horror movie, and you should watch it!! I think it qualifies as a slasher, but its weird, dreamy moods set it apart from the rest of the genre. At the core of it is a fairy tale, about the devil falling in love with a woman. The final stanza is a refrain repeated through out the movie:
Tumblr media
When the road is mean, blood will thicken
The devil’s pulse begins to quicken
While the body rots to dust and bones
There’s a tear in the heart where the devil roams
Also at the core of the movie are three odd people. Eve, a teenage girl who cannot speak, but can sing like an angel. Seven, her father, a washed up country doctor who faints at the sight of blood. Maggie, his lover, a woman who takes care of both of them, and does what needs doing, as she sees fit. They travel with a carnival, where Eve sings and Seven and Maggie perform a small dance behind her.
Tumblr media
They are upstaged, always, by a man named Tibbs. He is called Mr. Tips for his act, which is to cut off his fingers with a sharp pair of scissors. One day Eve enters his tent after a show to find him reattaching his fingers with a sewing needle from the heart of Abbadon. He tells her he made a deal with the devil, and he knows not to bargain for too much: he only ever cuts off the tips.
Tumblr media
As Eve, Maggie, and Seven travel, they leave a trail of bloody justice in their wake. They go to the homes of men who have bought up farms and evicted families. Eve blindfolds Seven, Maggie bashes their heads in, and Eve takes pictures of their bodies. One day, someone fights back and chops up Seven and Maggie, and Eve steals the heart of the devil in order to stitch them back together. The price they all pay for this enormous task is cruel, and leads to a macabre ending.
Tumblr media
The chemistry between the main three cast members is fabulous—the actors are family in real life. The aesthetic of the movie is gorgeous. It’s set in snowy, dreary 1930s, and the magic looks both mundane and grotesque. It’s like an old fairy tale come to life.
Tumblr media
There’s all sorts of fun, sinister details that fill out the movie, which I haven’t had time to mention. Eve is always doing surgery on dolls. Baby shoes keep appearing in the river. Clowns solemnly paint their faces in cakey makeup. It’s a great movie. 8/10!

Episode 157 is here! We kick off our Horror Parodies Month with a look at Scary Movie from 2000.
How well has this film stood up?
How does it work as a parody and how well does it lampoon the films its poking fun at?
How subjective is comedy and how do we hold this film now to the standards of the past?
We also discuss the sequels and spinoffs this film helped to spawn and whether or not that was a good or bad thing. We also get into what makes a good parody and if the art of the parody is now dead.
All of this and lots more in this new episode

The average age of a published author is 40. I'm extremely proud of myself and humbled to be a published author at 25, not only in digital, but now physical🥹💖 thank you to everyone who enjoys my work and supports me. I'm beyond humbled by the insanely high sales numbers of The Man with the Scarred Neck and a 90%+ positive reader reception, as a first time published author (and a splatterpunk author, at that!) 🥹💖 I never imagined I would come so far, so fast and so young... I couldn't have done it without y'all, and there are not words to express my gratitude and thanks💖

Horrorstör (2014) // Grady Hendrix
CW: Gore, Violence, Death
Grady Hendrix "Horrorstör" is a cheeky masterpiece in the horror genre. Sly digs at both IKEA and the American retail job market make for a fun read. Absolute recommendation to anyone looking for ghost horror with a little spice.

10 horror or horror-adjacent movie recommendations from a certified horror fan :)
*rank is not to show best to worst. i just like numbering things.
1. WYRMWOOD
synopsis: a survivor of a zombie plague prepares to slash his way through a horde of sinister soldiers and ravenous monsters to rescue his kidnapped sister.
rating: not rated, but probably would be rated r
rotten tomatoes: 82% critics, 58% audience
review: if you like indie horror, this is for you. if you like more big-budget and clean films, then don’t even bother. despite being a little rough, this movie is a lot of fun and has one of the most memorable plot twists i’ve ever seen. a very creative take on a zombies. there’s a sequel, but i haven’t seen it yet.
2. ESCAPE ROOM
synopsis: six strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive
rating: pg-13
rotten tomatoes: 50% critics, 53% audience
synopsis: is this movie great? nope! is it a lot of fun? hell yeah it is! the set pieces are stunning, and even though it leans into some lazy horror cliches, i think there’s enough creativity to keep it interesting. good for a fun movie night where you don’t want anything too serious or too mind-consuming. there’s also a sequel for this too, but i don’t really recommend it lol.
3. 28 DAYS LATER
synopsis: a group of misguided animal rights activists free a caged chimp infected with the "rage" virus from a medical research lab. when london bike courier jim wakes up from a coma a month after, he finds his city all but deserted. on the run from the zombie-like victims of the rage, jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including selena and cab driver frank, and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 87% critics, 85% audience
review: one of my favorite movies of all time, so maybe i’m biased. it is absolutely terrifying at times, but i feel it’s a good mix of social commentary, drama, and gore. also, cillian murphy.
4. 28 WEEKS LATER
synopsis: six months after the original epidemic, the rage virus has all but annihilated the population of the british Isles. nevertheless, the u.s. army declares the danger past, and american soldiers arrive to restore order and begin reconstruction. refugees return to british soil, but one of them carries a deadly secret: the virus is not gone and is even more dangerous than before.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 72% critics, 66% audience
review: bloody. terrifying. shocking. while the characters are a bit harder to care about, this movie has an eerie and dreadful atmosphere that immerses you and scenes that will hit you like a truck. there is one scene in particular that has stuck with me my entire life because of how gory and unsettling it is. if you don’t like violence, skip this one.
5. UNDERWORLD
synopsis: under cover of night, vampires engage in an age-old battle with their sworn enemies, the lycans, a clan of violent werewolves. selene, a vampire orphaned in the wake of a bloody lycan attack, works for the vampire clan as a trained killer. when the lycans take a mysterious interest in michael corvin, an exceptional mortal doctor, selene struggles to save him from lucian, a ruthless lycan leader hellbent on ending the vampire bloodline.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 31% critics, 79% audience
review: more horror-adjacent and supernatural flick. i remember loving the entire series, but i can mostly only remember the first. it’s been a hot minute since i’ve watched it, but it has a stylish gothic atmosphere, a cool female lead, and is so early 2000s/late 90s in a great way (in my opinion, at least.) it’s an under-appreciated, and divisive, action-horror classic.
6. BONES AND ALL
synopsis: love blossoms between a young woman on the margins of society and a disenfranchised drifter as they embark on a 3,000-mile odyssey through the backroads of america. however, despite their best efforts, all roads lead back to their terrifying pasts and a final stand that will determine whether their love can survive their differences.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 81% critics, 62% audience
review: you guys knew it would be here. another horror-adjacent recommendation in the form of horror-romance about cannibals. it’s is deeply romantic in all its gore, and unsettles just as much as it comforts. beautiful atmosphere, beautiful scenery, beautiful acting, beautiful music— everything about it is beautiful, but bloody enough to remind you why it got its r rating.
7. HELLBOY (2004)
synopsis: at the end of wwii, the nazis attempt to open a portal to a paranormal dimension in order to defeat the allies, but are only able to summon a baby demon who is rescued by allied forces and dubbed "hellboy.” 60 years later, hellboy serves as an agent in the bureau of paranormal research and defense, where he, aided by abe sapien, a merman with psychic powers, and liz sherman, a woman with pyrokinesis, protects america against dark forces.
rating: pg-13
rotten tomatoes: 82% critics, 66% audience
review: it’s a sci-fi/action/fantasy, but in my heart i know it’s got some horror in it. hellboy has some stunning set designs and makeup/styling that make this movie stand out amongst other comic book adaptations. ron perlman is the definitive hellboy, and guillermo del toro gave this story a unique sense of style and wit. (also, abe sapien? one of my favorite character ever.)
8. READY OR NOT
synopsis: grace couldn't be happier after she marries the man of her dreams at his family's luxurious estate. there’s just one catch— she must now hide from midnight until dawn while her new in-laws hunt her down with guns, crossbows and other weapons. as grace desperately tries to survive the night, she soon finds a way to turn the tables on her not-so-lovable relatives.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 89% critics, 78% audience
review: a lot of recent horror movies have let me down, but ready or not is refreshing for the genre. it has a compelling dark humor, as well as clever writing that both makes you laugh and keeps you on the edge of your seat. i highly recommend to any and everyone. it’s great! it’s not a tough watch and easily makes you want to pay attention without it feeling like a chore.
9. X
synopsis: a group of actors sets out to make an adult film in rural texas under the noses of their reclusive hosts, but when the elderly couple catches their young guests in the act, the cast finds themselves in a desperate fight for their lives.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 94% critics, 75% audience
review: it may take on the classic slasher formula, but ti west’s direction keeps it fresh. i will say it kind of meanders a little bit, but generally it’s a good time with some good kills and a nice slowburn that doesn’t leave you unsatisfied once the credits roll.
10. NOPE
synopsis: a man and his sister discover something sinister in the skies above their california horse ranch, while the owner of a nearby theme park tries to profit from the mysterious, otherworldly phenomenon.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 83% critics, 69% audience
review: jordan peele is amazing. nope is an alien horror flick that expertly builds suspense and keeps you locked in, even when you don’t want to be. some scenes in this film have disturbed me more than anything else i’ve ever seen. the alien itself is imposing and brings a sense of anxiety, and the characters are charming and witty. daniel kaluuya and keke palmer are fantastic leads. also, we love smart horror protagonists!

Some horror movies I've seen so far this summer
Tumblr media
I watched the Devil's Candy on Shudder today which was a really freaking excellent heavy metal horror film,. It was seriously good.
I heard a lot of mixed reviews for M3gan but I thought it was a pretty good solid movie.
I was disappointed in the remake of Children of the Corn. I watched it so many times back in the day (Outlander!! We have your woman!!" "He wants you too, Malachi!!"
I always remembered thinking if they just had had better CGI and effects they could have really done great things.
But the Remake instead of focusing on the religious aspect of everything turned it into a slasher movie starring children. And I was not impressed with how they depicted He Who Walks Behind the Rows.
Not at all.
Hellbender had some similar vibes and was a good rock and roll horror movie as well. Both had great young female leads. If you're looking for a modern witch tail that is a good one.
The Dark and the Wicked was really really good. If you're looking for something where people can't tell the difference between reality and hallucination this is the movie for you
I watched Antrum last week and that was great too. Very odd, had a 70's vibe. Very creepy and a whole lot of what the f*** is going on moments
Nope was extremely enjoyable as are all of Jordan Peeles movies. I feel like I need to go back and watch it again though is there a few things I just did not understand after I finished it.
Black Box had an unexpected twist so good to see Felicia Rashad again.
Super Dark Times was pretty good if a bit recyled. and the Girl on Third Floor really wasn't as bad as a lot of people made it out to be. And the best comment I've seen on Tumblr about that movie was Oh my God it's only 10 minutes into the movie and he's already fingering the house.!!! CM Punk at his dickish best!!
For found footage movies, it does not get any better than Horror in the High Desert. I actually had to go online and ask somebody is this a movie or did this actually happen?
Speaking of mock documentaries, even though I did not see this this past year it's been a while since I've seen it one movie that scared the absolutely living hell out of me is called The Nightmare and if you ever get a chance I think it is on both Prime and shutter go check it out I won't say anything else.
Out of everything I think the most fun scary movie I've seen so far is Mayhem plus it had Samara weaving who is my absolute favorite scream Queen of the new millennium.
Both mMayhem and nope features great Asian actors. And even though it is not a horror movie Honey Boy was..... a really really f***** up movie about the life of Shia LaBeouf. Even if you don't like him as an actor or maybe you've only like one or two of his movies really owe it to yourself to watch this movie because he had such a incredibly s***** childhood. Maybe not quite as bad as Corey Feldman but I think it's pretty much up there.

5 Films to Watch if You Loved "The Menu" (2022)
Tumblr media
By now I'm sure we've all heard about the newest horror comedy starring Anya Taylor Joy and Ralph Fiennes that has been taking the world by storm. The way this film melds precisely timed comedic moments into the suspenseful environment these characters are in without breaking the tension is marvelous, and the exact reason why is has been praised by many. When a group of elitist snobs (and Margot) attend an overpriced exclusive dinner experience on an isolated island hosted by a deranged world renowned chef, the film takes a turn from an intense slow burn to a batshit crazy action-packed evening.
"The Menu" holds a very impressive and unique ability to keep the audience intrigued and guessing at every turn, not sure what's going to happen but knowing it can't be good. The way it invokes dread during every dish is what's so captivating and exciting about it. So if that's something you deeply enjoyed about this film, here are 5 others sure to feed your appetite.
Tumblr media
The Invitation (2015) dir. Karyn Kusama
"The Invitation" is the most impressive example of innocent yet unusual situations turned diabolical and menacing within seconds before your eyes. When Will (Logan Marshall Green) and his new girlfriend attend a dinner party at his ex wife Eden's (Tammy Blanchard) home in the company of all their closest friends, unresolved trauma of their relationship looms over the entire evening. Things turn even more sinister when Eden and her husband Will's (Michiel Huisman) new friends from a "wellness retreat" join the party, adding to the uncomfortable tension plaguing the evening. This night goes from bad to worse, but the true mastery of this film is the way it depicts trauma and how it eats away at people, how people will look for anything and everything to feel alright again, to find their sense of purpose again. Not everyone processes or deals with trauma in the same way, and "The Invitation" shows how easy it is for desperation and grief can be manipulated, taken advantage of, and turned into something horrifying.
The Lodge (2019) dir. Veronika Franz, Severin Fiala
Tumblr media
Isolation horror and religious horror are two of the most popular sub-genres of horror, and "The Lodge" combines them both in the most magnificent way. The movie surrounds Grace (Riley Keough) as she joins her fiance and soon to be stepchildren Mia (Lia Mchue) and Aiden (Jaeden Martell) on a trip to their remote winter cabin. When work pulls her fiance away and she is left with the two children alone, a blizzard traps the three in the cabin and things begin to go bump in the night. The psychological trauma that Grace has endured in her life, coupled with the hatred and resentment the two children have for her begin to get to her head. "The Lodge" makes a simple story of a family caught in a snow storm and elevates it to seem more petrifying than I could have ever imagined, and the unravelling of the individuals stuck in that cabin grips your interest the entire time.
tw: suicide
The Platform (2019) dir. Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia
Tumblr media
"The Platform" is a social commentary on the class system and how vicious it can be, how people on the top take whatever they can and leave nothing for the rest. It takes greed and gluttony to an extreme level. This dystopian hellscape is set in a large tower type construction and involves two people per level living in the tower, with its residents switching levels every month at random. It becomes the home for Goreng, who volunteered to spend six months in "The Pit" in exchange for his diploma, and Trimagasi, who is serving a year long sentence in the facility for manslaughter. Each resident gets one item to bring into "The Pit," and while Goreng brings a copy of Don Quixote, Trimagasi brings his self sharpening knife. With at least 200 levels theorized by the residents, the only source of food and sustenance is a single platform that travel through the center of every level. It begins at the top, and makes its way down to the very bottom. As you can already guess, the lower the platform gets the less food there is for residents to eat, which leads to the most extreme and basic natural instinct; eat or be eaten. The commentary on this film takes its critiques on capitalism and social systems that favor the rich and shoves it right in your face. It forces you to look at humanity at its most masochistic, and how capitalist or socialist systems turn us against each other.
Barbarian (2022) dir. Zach Creggens
Tumblr media
As another heavy hitter of 2022, "Barbarian" stampedes into the horror genre as one of this decade's best. What I feel to be the absolute best depiction of modern technology and horror opens with Tess (Georgina Campbell) struggling to get into her Airbnb after it was double booked to her and Keith (Bill Skarsgard) for the same night. Without giving too much away, the unsettling moments and utter suspense have you on the edge of your seat with brief bouts of comic relief reminding you to breathe. Breakout director Zach Creggens created an outstanding film that I can already tell will withstand the tests of time and become an ultimate horror cult classic, while the hilarious and talented Scream King Justin Long adds to the different dynamics between the characters and brings this movie to another level of excellence. If you think you can guess what's coming, no you fucking can't.
Ready or Not (2019) dir. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett
Tumblr media
Ready or not, here comes Samara Weaving as one of this generation's favorite scream queens in this violently funny horror comedy. The movie opens to Grace's (Weaving) wedding day as she gets ready to marry Alex (Mark O'Brien) and join the LeDomas family, an affluent family who's ancestors gained their fortune from a man named LeBail. In order for the family to hold up their end of the LeBail deal and keep their fortune, they must uphold the tradition of playing a game from chosen by a puzzle box anytime someone marries into the family. When Grace draws the "Hide and Seek" card, it soon becomes apparent to her that this game of hide and seek is more sinister and deadly than she initially thought. Between the cynical alcoholic brother Daniel (Adam Brody), the coked up sister who can't seem to do anything right, and Weaving's incredible ability to make even the most violent and gruesome encounters a little humorous, "Ready or Not" is a masterpiece of social commentary horror comedies.

the blob (1988) review!!
SHAWNEE SMITH AKA AMANDA FROM SAW? had no idea she was gonna be in this but she’s so good
the practical effects were so sexy and anytime the blob was on screen i was having a great time. gave me similar (but sillier) vibes as Carpenter’s The Thing (1982).
there’s a particular transition i loved that went from the blob to a kid eating jello:
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Coraline
“The day after they moved in, Coraline went exploring….” https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17061.Coraline ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 5 out of 5. What a delightfully spooky read. I’ve been a big fan of the Laika film version of Coraline for a long time, however, I never got around to reading the novel (mostly due to Neil Gaiman being very blah for me overall). I really enjoyed how the book was written…
