Founded in 1687, by King James VII of Scotland (James II of England and Ireland), The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, is an order of chivalry associated with Scotland.
Appointments are made at the Sovereign’s sole discretion, and membership of the Order is limited to the Sovereign and no more than sixteen Knights and Ladies; though so-termed Extra Knights (who do not count towards the total of sixteen), may also be admitted according to status. Prince Albert was the first such Extra Knight. His Majesty King Olav V of Norway, being a further example.
The Order’s primary emblem is the thistle (the national flower of Scotland). The motto: Nemo me impune lacessit (No one provokes me with impunity). Its patron saint. St Andrew.
The mantle is a green robe lined with white taffeta. It’s tied with green and gold tassels; the left shoulder, bearing the star of the Order.
The hat is made of black velvet, and is plumed with white feathers with a black egret or heron’s top in the middle.
The collar is worn over the mantle. It’s made of gold, and depicts thistles and sprigs of rue.
The St Andrew (also called the badge-appendant), is worn suspended from the collar. It comprises a gold enamelled depiction of St Andrew wearing a green gown and purple coat and holding a white saltire; gold rays of glory, being depicted as emanating from his head.
The star of the Order is worn at the left breast. It consists of a silver St Andrew’s saltire with clusters of rays between the arms. In the centre is depicted a green circle bearing the motto of the Order in gold majuscules; within the circle, a thistle on a gold field. Since the Order of the Thistle is the second-most senior chivalric order in the UK, a member will wear its star above that of other orders to which he or she belongs, except that of the Order of the Garter.
The broad riband is a dark green sash worn across the body from shoulder to hip, where the badge of the Order is attached depicting St Andrew in the same form as the badge-appendant surrounded by the Order’s motto.

Darkness Falls
October 22 Prompt: folklore • cabin in the woods • after dark
Character(s): Romania (Vasile Lupei), Norway (Lukas Bakke), England (Arthur Kirkland), mention of Bulgaria (Teodor Dimitrov) and Nyo Denmark (Matilde Winther Bakke)
@hetaween-event
Purple eyes of Lukas look at the brown haired nobleman. He couldn’t believe what he’d heard from the other male. He wanted to head out into the woods after the sun went down. And he wanted Arthur to come with them.
“So long as Matilde doesn’t have to worry about us,” Lukas said. “She won’t even have to know about it,” Vasile said. “Teodor doesn’t.” Lukas raised an eyebrow at that. He seriously didn’t tell Teodor? And he wanted Lukas to not bring it up to his own wife? A deep sigh from Lukas. "You really want to do this, huh?" He asked. Vasile nodded. "Yeah, I do."
Green eyes of Arthur look around at the trees. It's been a long time since he's been out here and the fact that he's with his friends made it better. Nothing could scare him now. He looked over when he heard Lukas speak up.
"I can't believe you convinced me to come out here," the king said. Vasile, on the other hand, was smirking. "We are not doing this again," Lukas said. "Whatever you say, your majesty," Vasile said. "If you two didn't already have partners, I'd have thought you two were married with the way you two are acting," Arthur said as he turned to look in front of him. Vasile and Lukas glance between each other and Arthur. Nonetheless, the trio ventured farther into the woods. Lukas' ears twitched when the sound of a branch being broken a ways away from the three broke. "Something's here." Brown and green eyes look around. Now they're all alert.
"You shouldn't have come here," an eerie voice said. Lukas turned to see some sort of creature standing there. Vasile and Arthur look in the direction Lukas is facing... except they don't see anything.

Τα μεν γαρ άλλα δεύτερα αν πάσχη γυνή, ανδρός δ’ αμαρτάνουσα, αμαρτάνει βίου.* - Euripides *Other misfortunes are secondary for a woman, but if she loses her husband, she loses her life.
Queen Anne-Marie of Greece is the widow of the late King Constantine II of Greece, who reigned from 1964 until 1973. She was born Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark on 30 August 1946.
Anne-Marie is the youngest daughter of King Frederick IX of Denmark and his wife Ingrid of Sweden. She is the youngest sister of the reigning Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and cousin of the reigning King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
Tumblr media
In 1961, she spent a year at an English boarding school in Switzerland - the Chatelard School for Girls. In 1963, to improve her French, Queen Anne-Marie attended a Swiss finishing school, 'Le Mesnil', until the Spring of 1964. She also speaks Greek, English and of course Danish.
Queen Anne-Marie first met King Constantine of Greece as a young girl in 1959, when he visited Copenhagen on a journey to Sweden and Norway, as Crown Prince, with his parents, King Paul I and Queen Frederica.
She met him again in Denmark in 1961. He had declared to his parents that he intended to marry her.
On 14 May, 1962, Crown Prince Constantine's elder sister, Princess Sophia, married the Spanish Prince Juan Carlos in a double ceremony in Athens at the Roman Catholic Cathedral and the Orthodox Cathedral.
More than 100 royal guests came to Athens, and Princess Anne-Marie was a bridesmaid. Queen Frederica of Greece recorded that, at the reception, her son Crown Prince Constantine 'would dance only with Anne-Marie'.
In 1963, centenary celebrations of the Greek Royal Family began with a State Visit from Princess Anne-Marie's parents, King Frederick and Queen Ingrid of Denmark.
In March 1964, King Paul I died after a short illness, and Constantine succeeded him to the Greek throne.
Tumblr media
King Constantine came to the throne with much goodwill, which was expressed in abundance when, on 18 September 1964 (six months after his accession) he married his beautiful Danish Princess in what was described at the time, as 'the most radiant of Athenian royal weddings'. Even an old republican, the 76 year old Prime Minister, George Papandreou, was seen to be enjoying himself thoroughly with the bride and bridegroom.
Queen Anne-Marie devoted much of her time as Queen of Greece to 'Her Majesty's Fund'. This was a charitable foundation started by her mother-in-law, Queen Frederica. It helped people in rural areas of Greece and supported crafts such as embroidery and weaving. She also worked closely with the Red Cross, and various charities.
On 21 April, 1967, political problems in Athens intensified with the Colonel's coup. A month later, Queen Anne-Marie gave birth to Crown Prince Pavlos at the family's country estate, Tatoi.
In December, after his attempt to restore democracy failed, King Constantine and his family left Greece from Kavalla for Rome. With the King, the Queen and the two children were King Constantine's mother, Queen Frederica and his younger sister Princess Irene. They landed at a military airport in Italy because they were running out of fuel.
Tumblr media
Queen Anne-Marie and her family stayed first at the Greek Embassy in Rome for 2 months and then took a house at Olgiata on the outskirts of the city.
Later in 1968, they moved to 13, Via di Porta Latina - where they lived until 1973. On 1 October 1969, Queen Anne-Marie gave birth to Prince Nikolaos in the Villa Claudia Clinic near her home in Rome.
In 1974, Queen Anne-Marie moved with King Constantine to England, after a brief stay with her mother in Denmark. King Constantine had been officially deposed by the military Government on 1 June 1973 and a Republic declared by colonel Papadopoulos.
The family's first home was in Chobham in Surrey. Then they moved to a house in Hampstead in North London, where they have lived ever since. Queen Anne-Marie calls it her 'Home away from home'.
Queen Anne-Marie's family grew larger with the birth of Princess Theodora at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, in London on 9 June 1983, and Prince Philippos on 26 April 1986.
Queen Anne-Marie helped to start this remarkable bilingual educational initiative in 1980. She is now Honorary Chairman of the school, and devotes a lot of her time to it.
Her first visit to Greece since she left with her family in 1967, was for a few hours, for the funeral of King Constantine's mother, Queen Frederica, in 1981.
Queen Frederica died suddenly in Madrid. Her wish had been to be buried beside her husband, King Paul, at the family estate at Tatoi. The family was given permission to attend - but could not spend a night in their country. They landed at a little airfield near Tatoi, and were welcomed by large crowds. It was, for Queen Anne-Marie and her family, a moving and sad occasion.
Tumblr media
She visited Greece again with King Constantine and her family on a private visit by sea in 1993. They went, 'Not knowing what to expect. Wherever we went, people came out to greet us. It was extraordinary and very moving'. It was the first visit for her younger children.
In 2013, The Greek government allowed the ex-monarch to come back to Greece. Constantine returned to reside in Greece. He and his wife Anne-Marie purchased a villa in Porto Cheli, Peloponnese, residing there until they relocated to Athens in the spring of 2022
Wherever they were in the world, Queen Anne-Marie was a constant source of support and stability not just for her exiled husband but also their five children. She made sure that the family spoke Greek at home with all her children learning to be fluent.
She was the one also the family retained close links with all the royal families of Europe - and particularly with the British, Spanish and Danish Royal Families.
Queen Anne-Marie's father, King Frederik IX of Denmark was an accomplished musician and she has inherited his love of classical music - Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikowsky, Wagner. She has always been fascinated by historical biographies.
Tumblr media
She had been, above all, the greatest support to her husband over many years of change. They had been happily married for 58 years until the King Constantine II died on 10th January 2023. She remains the last Queen of Greece.

I’m so confused on why Prince Julian of Sweden was given the title prince when king Harold changed the law before he was born to that only the crown princes can have titles?
Harald’s Norwegian. The King of Sweden is Carl Gustaf :)
Informally we refer to an HRH as being part of their title but formally there are different components called styles and titles. Titles are the more descriptive, role based aspect. So Charles's title is The King of the United Kingdom, Victoria's is The Crown Princess of Sweden etc. The bit that goes in front - HRH, His Majesty etc - is called the style and it's how they are generally addressed. So if you were in a charity meeting with Charles you wouldn't have to say "What do you think, King of the United Kingdom?" you say "What do you think, Your Majesty."
Carl Gustaf made an announcement (not a law, unlike other monarchies he has no power to change the law and a legal change isn't needed in Sweden) that his grandchildren through his younger children - so through Carl Philip and Madeleine - would no longer have an HRH style (Estelle and Oscar have an HRH so it’s not about being Crown Prince or Princess). So they are all still titled Prince or Princess but they don't have the style. Styles are often used as a way to differentiate rank e.g. in Norway Ingrid is HRH while her younger brother, who is not the heir, is only His Highness.

GODPARENTS OF GRAND DUKE MICHAEL ALEXANDROVICH
Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich, the youngest son of Emperor Alexander III (then Tsesarevich) of Russia, was born on 4 December 1878 at the Anichkov Palace, Saint Petersburg, Russia. He was christened on 22 December at the Winter Palace, St. Petersburg, by the Confessor of Their Imperial Majesties. His godparents were:
ALEXANDER II, EMPEROR OF RUSSIA - the Russian Emperor, his grandfather, was one of his godparents. Alexander’s most significant reform as emperor was the emancipation of Russia’s serfs in 1861, for which he is known as Alexander the Liberator.
PRINCESS LOUISE OF HESSE-KASSEL, QUEEN CONSORT OF DENMARK - his maternal grandmother was one of his godparents. Louise became the Queen consort of Denmark upon her husband’s - King Christian IX - accession in 1863. Through her six children, she was a grandmother of not only the future Tsar of Russia (Nicholas II, Michael's older brother), but also that of King George V of the United Kingdom; King Constantine I of Greece; King Christian X of Denmark, and King Harken VII of Norway.
GRAND DUCHESS ALEXANDRA IOSIFOVNA - born a Princess of Saxe-Altenburg, Alexandra married Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, thus becoming Michael's great-aunt (by marriage), and one of his godparents. She was considered a beautiful woman, but plagued by insecurity, and her marriage to the grand duke had been largely unhappy - though the first sixteen of their marriage was a harmonious one.
GRAND DUKE MICHAEL NIKOLAEVICH - his great-uncle and namesake was listed as one of his godparents. A soldier for most of his adult life, he enjoyed a favourable relationship with the three last Emperors of Russia - his brother Alexander II; nephew Alexander III; and great-nephew Nicholas II.
PRINCE VALDEMAR OF DENMARK - his maternal uncle was also another of his godparents. He had a lifelong naval career, becoming the first president of the Seamen's Association of 1856.
