#Herod the Great
Still not sure if Josephus was exaggerating how close Herod and Marcus Agrippa were or if Agrippa had a Type and that Type was "mass-murdering autocrat"

"...Malichus' brother, when he possessed himself of the fortresses; for he had gotten a great many of them already, and among them the strongest of them all - Masada."

They say how Herod loved Mariamne, but it was not a healthy love. He was so passionate that he bordered on sick, he could never get enough of her. He married to have an alliance with the Hasmoneans, but he had a really strong crush on Mariamna, so much so that he believed any story that his sister Salome, who hated Mariamne, Herod told him, believed it, and he let the brutal jealousy he felt of her thinking she was cheating on him blinded his poor judgment.Mariamne had also loved Herod, but when he killed her brother, the high priest Aristobulus II, and the rest of her family, what she felt for him diminished, and there came a time when she no longer wanted to lie with her husband. Herod was obsessed, and according to Josephus, the Judeo-Christian historian, Salome, Herod's sister, taking advantage of this point, sent a potion of love to Herod saying that it was from Mariamne, and stupid Herod thought it was poison, so who accused Mariamne of wanting to kill him. The judge determined that she was guilty of something that she did not even know what it was about, but Mariamne was strong, really sure of herself and did not admit infidelity or attempt to murder her husband because she had not done. She was executed, and Herod, as obsessed as he was with her, according to Flavius Josephus, embalmed her in honey, so that her flesh would remain flexible, and he went to see her dead every day. He never forgot her and spent the rest of her life having visions of her dead wife.

Herod The Great 1960 Movie Review Finale Part 3
Who’s Ready For The Passion Of The Herod?!? Nobody??? GREAT!! FUCK THIS MOVIE!!This is instantly my worst movie of the whole lot… And we still have 12 more movies yet to go. Spoilers… Most of them are about Hercules or heroes and fun stuff! Not this crap! I’m just going to speed review the end. Then break the news that this movie is about as historically accurate as next year’s Show White And…

Salome was misunderstood. She never wanted to kill John the Baptist. She didn't even really know who he was. Salome was a teenage girl back then that was offered to be granted any wish and as kind as she was she went to her mother Herodias, asking if she might have a wish. The mother responded "John the Baptists Head", so that was what Salome said to make her mother proud. She never meant to kill a Saint but to please her mother. Unfortunately her mother was a bad person. I don't think it's fair though to blame his death on Salome. She was literally 14! And she didn't even behead him! Everyone is blaming her. I don't know man, she seemed to try to please her mother, which is relatable as a teenage girl, but the thing is that her mother's wish was so terrible. To say that she's just like her Grandfather Herod the Great, who committed genocide and killed thousands of Innocent is again just an insinuation! This is clearly shown by her turning to Jesus and being one of the 2 female decibels of him next to Mary Magdalena. She matured and turned her back to her family for Jesus (again relatable). Salome's story shows that everyone can be tricked by people you love into doing horrible things & that Jesus forgives you anyway!
(TW: I'm just learning & it might be that those 2 Salomes are two entirely different women but since they lived at approximately the same time I think they could be the same person. I'm not sure though. I also just converted. I used to be atheist, please don't be mad at me. I don't know any better. God bless!)

Swords Into Plowshares
Friday’s Column: Brent’s Bent Brent Pollard “And He will judge between the nations, And will render decisions for many peoples; And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they learn war.” (Isaiah 2.4 NASB1995)  Once upon a time, my family and I shared a condo in Hinesville, Georgia.…

Masada: Herod's Aerie
Herod the Great’s palace complex on the plateau of Masada does not feature in the Biblical narrative, but it is an impressive site, nonetheless, and speaks to Herod’s ambitious building program, enormous budget, and ambitions of grandeur. #Masada #Sicarii
David and I are once again in Israel, the “Beautiful Land,” as the prophet Daniel described in. Herod the Great’s palace complex on the plateau of Masada does not feature in the Biblical narrative, but it is an impressive site, nonetheless, and speaks to Herod’s ambitious building program, enormous budget, and ambitions of grandeur. It is also the tragic site the Judean Zealots’ last stand…

Reading through Antiquities of the Jews in order to fish out (ha-ha) a specific quote about the swimming pools in Jericho only to find the incredible thirst Josephus and all of Judea had for Arsitobulus III, Herod's 17 y/o brother-in-law, is definitely one of the best perks of this research.
"...for when this youth Aristobulus, who was now in the seventeenth year of his age, went up to the altar... with the ornaments of his high priesthood, and when he performed the sacred offices,  he seemed to be exceedingly comely, and taller than men usually were at that age, and to exhibit in his countenance a great deal of that high family he was sprung from,—a warm zeal and affection towards him appeared among the people..."
I mean, come on...
(Too bad he was soon after murdered in the pools above for being too hot. No, seriously.)

"cleopatra movie starring zendaya as cleopatra and timothee chalamet as octavian" i was having a good day and now i have an anger headache
#personal#i like zendaya and chalamet as actors and they have good chemistry#and i'm honestly fine with anything that focuses on the relationship cleopatra and octavian had with each other specifically#i think it's underdiscussed and a great source of drama and narrative storytelling#but not like this#for one i will say it until i'm blue in the face: cleopatra was white as bread. palest woman to have ever lived in egypt.#you know what with the THREE CENTURIES OF ONE GREEK FAMILY INBREEDING OVER AND OVER THAT LED TO HER CONCEPTION#for two: why are octavian and cleopatra gonna be the same age she was a decade older than him#that's important!#she was an adult in a relationship with his great-uncle when they first met in rome and HE was a teenager barely a year into adulthood#(by roman standards)#like she can't be his age and have a relationship with caesar#and even more importantly him being younger is probably a key part in why she might have underestimated him#along with listening to antony but that man was just stupid#it's a recurring theme in octavian's early career: the people around him were older and because he was young he wasn't taken seriously#until he was at their doorstep burning down their house and killing everyone they knew and by then it was too late#i cannot believe hollywood is apparently finding it hard to cast a white woman who can play midtwenties to early forties!!!#denis i know you like these two but pls just executive produce and give the project over to me and let me overhaul it#(where i then scrap the cleopatra focus and make it either a three way show focusing on cleopatra octavian and herod)#(or i just get to make the octavian biopic show i've had in my head for like two years)
