Dark Skin Directory
I did one of these for my sideblog BlackFemmeCharacterDependency (BFCD) and... While it’ll take longer on this end to do because there are more prominent figures here than on that one, I thought it would be good to also have one for my main...
EDIT: Okay, so the one that I did for BFCD does not work, so I am posting this one to see if it works, and if not, they’ll both be WIPS until I have the time to repair them
For the purposes of this list and on this page, whenever I say “dark skinned,” I mean a traditional brown crayon or darker. I grew up around Black people, so the words “dark skinned” do not mean the same thing to me as it do to nonblacks.

That time Heather Armstrong roasted me on her popular blog, dooce
I mentioned yesterday that I interviewed Heather Armstrong, who wrote the blog dooce and that she later wrote about how excruciating the experience was for her.
Armstrong took her own life this week. She was talented, funny, and insightful, and she helped invent professional blogging, which led to today’s social media influencers and indie journalists.
I was not offended by the piece Armstrong wrote after I interviewed her in 2006. I thought it was a fair rap. However, I was disappointed that I’d set out to interview someone I admired, and that person had found the experience horribly painful.
Yesterday, I said I was unable to locate Heather’s blog post, but a friend online found it and sent me the link this morning:
On being a total nutjob
A few weeks ago Jon and I gave an interview to an IT magazine for an article about accidental entrepreneurship. They wanted to know how this website now pays our mortgage when I originally started it so that I could make obnoxious fart jokes online. Short answer: I had to give a lot of head.
It was a phone interview, and they recorded it so that they could incorporate it into a podcast (when it’s posted I’ll link to it here), and I can honestly say that I have never been more uncomfortable giving an interview. One, it was only a couple days after I had discovered that someone I thought was a very cool person was making viciously mean comments about me in a public forum, and every time I answered a question into the phone I could hear in my head how this person would make fun of the way I said things. Two, in order to make sure that they had a clean edit for the podcast, the guy conducting the interview wouldn’t say anything for at least 10 seconds after I answered a question, and that disorienting pause made me think that my thrilling discourse had bored him into a coma.
Here’s the article that followed from that interview. It’s … fine. Not my best work, but not bad either.
Accidental Tech Entrepreneurs Turn Their Hobbies Into Livelihoods. InformationWeek interviewed five accidental entrepreneurs, including the founders of del.icio.us and Digg and the author of the blog Dooce, to find out how they freed themselves from the paycheck-to-paycheck grind.
The article I wrote is perhaps notable today as a time capsule of Internet history. I also interviewed Joshua Schachter, the co-founder of a bookmarking site called del.icio.us; Kevin Rose, who co-founded digg; Mena Trott, co-founder of Six Apart, the company behind Movable Type, LiveJournal, and TypePad; and Tom Davis, author of personal information manager software called Zoot, which is similar in mission to more recent applications like Evernote and Microsoft OneNote. (I’m pleased to see that Zoot Software is still around.)
I did a brief follow-up article a few years later, focusing on Armstrong alone: Maytag Crosses Popular Blogger, Gets Spun Dry. I talked at the end about how I felt about reading Armstrong’s article about our interview.
News of Armstrong’s death this week shook me in the same way Anthony Bourdain’s death shook me. Like Bourdain, she was struggling with demons, and the demons beat her.
I can’t help thinking that her living so much of her life in public, sharing her insecurities and self-loathing with millions of people, was not helpful to her mental state. And I need to think about how that relates to my own online habits.

Hey y’all, so even though literally no one I know knows this series, I still post about it so there’s more content of it in the media, FOR THE PEOPLE THAT WATCHED EPISODE 8 HOW DO YALL FEEL ABOUT HEATHER’S REDEMPTION ARC? Also I got an autograph from Morgan Davies so yea im very happy
(Edit: I still get jump-scared just by looking at this, I swear that screenshot of heather is terrifying, like miss I don’t want to see your face that close, until I see the episode that’s all about her, I am going to take a bit until I accept her redemption arc)

NEWS
Last week, I published a free blog on Patreon–Top 11 Celtic Bands and Artists of 2023. I always find it interesting to see which artists I feature the most on the podcast in a given year. Sometimes these artists crossover the songs and tunes on the Celtic Top 20. It’s fascinating to see. Go read the article on our Patreon. Which you can follow and get blogs like this for free.
Our Make100 Kickstarter campaign is FULLY FUNDED! We funded 100 Celtic Pins, 100 Celtic CDs and 100 Celtic shirts as part of the campaign.
One of the things I did not plan for was Stretch Goals. It took me a moment, but I came up with one that makes me very happy–an exclusive compilation album.
Here’s how it works. If we can raise $6000, then I will put together a bonus compilation album. Everyone who supports the campaign at $25+ will get a copy. I’ll also print 100 physical copies of the album on CD.
The album will feature 12+ songs and tunes from our Highlight Reels. Basically, I’m gonna contact bands and see if I can license enough tracks for a bonus album. I’ll start with the Celtic Top 20. If I can get enough tracks, I’ll stop there. If I can’t then I will dig into our next most - popular Highlight Reels.
Go check out our Kickstarter right now.
THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!
You are amazing. It is because of your generosity that you get to hear so much great Celtic music each and every week.
Your kindness pays for our engineer, graphic designer, Celtic Music Magazine editor, promotion of the podcast, and allows me to buy the music I play here. It also pays for my time creating the show each and every week.
As a patron, you get music - only episodes before regular listeners, vote in the Celtic Top 20, stand - alone stories, and you get a private feed to listen to the show.  All that for as little as $1 per episode.
A special thanks to our Celtic Legends: Bill Mandeville, Marti Meyers, Brenda, Karen, Emma Bartholomew, Dan mcDade, Carol Baril, Miranda Nelson, Nancie Barnett, Kevin Long, Gary R Hook, Lynda MacNeil, Kelly Garrod, Annie Lorkowski, Shawn Cali

Al Ha commented on Patreon: "Happy New Year, Marc! Appreciate everything that you do, thanks for continuing to bring us this great music"
Ben Q emailed: "Hi Marc, Huge fan with a fun story for you from today: I was changing my daughter’s diaper and singing a little song, in this case "The Parting Glass," to keep us both entertained. A lot of the time she will say “Daddy, stop singing!” which hurts a little but is totally fine, ha ha. But today she said “Dad I want you to sing ‘Down by yon green bushes!’” That’s the first line of a song that I actually learned maybe two years ago from Niamh Parsons’s appearance on your podcast, “Bonnie Woodhall,” and Niamh told a great story to go with it as well, about trying over multiple late - night sessions with her fellow musicians to remember the whole thing. I loved that song as well as her story, and I sing that a lot around my house, but  -  me not sounding much like Niamh when I sing  -  I don’t get a lot of requests around here exactly, and it really tickled me that my kid requested that one. Anyway, please keep up the good work Marc, and if it’s not too late to say so, a very happy New Year to you."
Patrick Rieger sent a picture and asked about photo sizes for the podcast: "Thank you. I can set the width at 1200 pixels. The photos are already at 72dpi.
Here is a photo of The Craic Show on September 3, 2023, during the opening gate act of the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival. The Donegal Doggs can be seen seated on the left waiting their turn.
I'll keep the photos coming. We'll be attending Great Lakes, Pittsburgh, and Ohio again this year. We planned the dates to attend Ohio in 2024 during Pub SIng this last year."

It isn’t surprising that Grace Elizabeth Hale chose to write a book about a 1947 lynching. The University of Virginia professor is an award-winning historian who has taught and written about the South and white supremacy for decades, including in the book “Making Whiteness: The Culture of Segregation in the South, 1890-1940.”But her new book is more than just history from the archives. “In the Pines: A Lynching, A Lie, A Reckoning” is a family history of the worst sort. While growing up in Georgia, Hale had spent part of her summers with her grandparents in Jefferson Davis County in Mississippi. She was told that when her beloved grandfather, Oury Berry, was sheriff, he had given an Atticus Finch-esque speech to the townsfolk to stop them from storming the jail and dragging Versie Johnson off to a gruesome death.Johnson was a Black man accused by local men of raping a pregnant white woman. But the woman never came forward; she may have been Johnson’s consensual lover. The prisoner died shortly afterward, purportedly during an escape attempt.Read more: When will America finally dismantle its racist myths? Two powerful new books tryIn fact, Johnson was murdered by law enforcement under direction of the man Hale had known as Pa.Hale started digging beneath the family lore back in graduate school. “I realized the story couldn’t have actually been true the way it was described to me,” she said in a recent video interview from her home in Charlottesville, Va. “But at that point I didn’t really want to know."Ultimately, however, Hale realized she couldn’t help the United States reexamine its history without reckoning with her own. She could “not stop looking” until the truth was laid bare. Our conversation, about her process and her discoveries, has been edited for clarity and length. What motivated you to write this now? What really drove me to write was [the Unite the Right Rally in] 2017 in Charlottesville. This is where I live. You saw those pictures of the people with the tiki torches surrounding that little group of students around the Jefferson statue at the Rotunda — those are my students. And [Heather Heyer] died just blocks from my house.I can't tell you how traumatizing it is to have white supremacists visit your town. They came for months because the city council voted to take down the Robert E. Lee statue, and I always felt like I had to be at the counter-protests. It made me realize that even though I thought I understood it all, there was something that I didn't get, which was the visceral threat that comes when you have people with loaded guns parking their car in front of your house. That made me think about a project that will make people understand that history isn't distant and abstract — it's us. All history is somebody's family story. Frankly, that’s what gave me the courage to revisit this situation, because it was hard to do. I had grown up with a story of my grandfather's heroism. And I thought my not wanting to know was symptomatic of a lot of white Americans. I wanted to make the point that this erasure of history is foundational to why racism and white supremacy persists.Read more: Op-Ed: White supremacist publications took a hit after Charlottesville. Now they're stronger than everThe thing that was most difficult to me was discovering the story — which I didn’t know until I started this research — that the sheriff before [Berry] stopped a lynching multiple times. That was just heartbreaking because it showed that it could be done. You note that white supremacists saw their extra-legal behavior as serving their community. Does that feel connected to the way insurrectionists on Jan. 6 saw themselves as heroes saving the country? Is that the version their grandchildren will hear? The concept that white male citizenship includes the right for you to personally embody the law is absolutely central. We celebrate autonomy and self-help in these rural communities, saying, “Look at these people, they know how to take care of themselves,” but vigilantism comes out of that too.
When there’s an understanding of citizenship as limited to a certain group of people, whatever they do is somehow justified. We saw that with Ahmaud Arbery and with January 6th.I'm trying to be a storyteller here, but I'm also a professional historian, and the history argument I’m sneaking in is that there’s a porous boundary between law enforcement and vigilante behavior. I don't think it is strictly a Southern or rural thing. Most Americans don't think about how different levels of the government — local, state, federal — are at cross-purposes with each other, and that these various levels often turn the other way or even encourage vigilante violence. That’s very much in play today.Read more: 35 years after her mother's murder, a poet of Black struggle writes a monumentYou made a monumental effort to learn as much as you could about Versie Johnson — not just his death but his life. Why go to those lengths, beyond correcting the record?Maybe that is the most personal part of the book. [She chokes up.] There's nothing that I can do about these actions and his death, but I could bring him to life on the page to whatever degree I could, and acknowledge his life.Do you regret not pursuing this story decades ago when more participants and witnesses would have been alive? Or would your research have been limited by the lack of information online back then?I do regret not doing it earlier, because I would've found more people that were alive in the moment that the killing happened. But you're absolutely right, the digitization of genealogical records was not there and it's incredible what you can now find. I must say that while part of the reason then was that I didn't want to know, this is very difficult, time-consuming research and I wouldn't have been able to do it without the fellowship funding I got. Also, I’m a single parent, and so until my children were in college, I couldn't be away for that long. How did your mother and other family members react to your digging up the past? Her choice was to not reexamine the past. This story is not something she accepts. It's really hard for all of my family members and they didn't get to decide. It was certainly something that they would've rather me not do. I just want to leave that at that.Get the latest book news, events and more in your inbox every Saturday. This story originally appeared in Los Angeles Times.

The Ultimate Guide To Donald Trump will be happy about forgotten Confederate
TikTok video from Nate Scott Nicholson (@natenicholson08): "Shield AMERICA! Safeguard LIBRARY – DONALD TRUMP! Safeguard THE LIBRARY – DONALD TRUMP! Shield LIBRARY – DONALD TRUMP! DEFEND LIBRARY – DONALD TRUMP!". Trump then responded by tweeting out yet an additional strike line: The fact that some in the left will be contacting the KKK. Simply yet another day in the swamp! TikTok video coming from Medeya (@drunktinkerbell): "Trump promoters carrying Republic of Georgia Flag 🤦‍♀️😂😂 #DC #Coup #wtfjusthappened #icantbelievewhatijustsaw". (It's been mentioned that a number of Democratic teams have sent a petition asking authorities at the DC Office of Police, Secret Service and US Customs to retract a authorization for Trump Trump proponents delivering Republic of Georgia Flag. TikTok video from eve (@notmindy_kailing): "#greenscreen ayo georgia the country and georgia the state are not the same #themoreyouknow #georgia #trumpsupportersbelike". Thus much for that, is. What can easily be performed? We know our allies don't really want to play national politics along with the United States, and in my sight, this is the most dangerous opportunity. trumpie: I delivered a. | point out it | a georgian flag | . initial sound. Behold, a detail of 'Helsinki Coral Forest' crocheted from recycled plastics by 3000 Helsinki Satellite reefers. (Sculpture curated by Christine and Margaret Wertheim with Lotta Kjellberg, Elina Ahlstedt, Noora El Harouny and Tuija Maija Piironen.) This radical work of crocheting is reproduced from 'Christine and Margaret Wertheim: Value and Transformation of Corals,' published by @wienand_verlag Christine Wertheim writes: "In 2006, when Margaret Wertheim and I learned of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), that whorl of plastic waste accumulating in the Pacific Ocean, we vowed to save all our own domestic plastic for 5 years. 4 years later we had to admit defeat; for to save is to wash, and washing plastic, especially food-related stuff is a time-consuming business. By then we had accumulated 440 pounds. We call it 'The Midden,' after the trash heaps found around ancient sites of human habitation that often provide anthropological insight. For two people over four years, 440 pounds is not so bad. We could not do it now, as the quantum of plastic packaging ever increases. For instance, our favorite containers of pickled ginger recently sprouted yet another skin of 'protection' in the form of an internal hard-plastic lid, inside the outer lid, which is itself now wrapped in a layer of clear soft plastic. How many condoms do we need to protect ourselves? And from what? And as we accumulated this stuff, we also began to crochet it: the plastic bags, videotapes, gift wrap, etc., anything that could be turned into a plastic yarn. And from these we started making a 'Toxic Reef' as a postmodern synthetic sibling to the mimetic beauty of our yarn-based works, themselves evoking healthy living reefs.…" Catalog edited by Udo Kittelmann, Christine Wertheim, Margaret Wertheim. Preface by Udo Kittelmann. Text by Donna Haraway, Kayleigh C. Perkov, Heather Davis, Margaret Wertheim, Christine Wertheim, Doug Harvey, Amita Deshpande, Cord Riechelmann. @margaretwertheim44 @crochetcoralreef @friederburda @donnaharaway1944 @craft_shame @dghrvy @amita_ecosocial #instituteforfiguring #CrochetCoralReef #coralreef #crochetcoralreef #crochet #badenbadensatellitereef https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch7gCmBOpMv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
