Why Lovely Horribly is the worst K-Drama ever.
If you haven’t heard, Lovely Horribly is the amazing new korean drama that has been marketed as a horror-romantic comedy. Now, when something is marketed as so many different genres... that already raises some red flags. I watched the trailer and it seemed typical for a k-drama and there wasn’t anything significant about it, yet I wanted to give it a shot. I’ve been surprised before. Plus I like ghosty-goos. Here’s the trailer:
Well, this time I was surprised. It wasn’t better than I thought it was going to be. It was worse. So much WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORSE!
Let’s break down this train wreck of a drama. And, as a disclaimer, I’m sorry if you liked it. This is just my honest opinion and feel free to reply with what you thought. Did you hate it? Love it? Do you hate me for writing this? Do you even GIVE A SHIT?
HERE COMES THE SPOILER TRAIN FULL SPEED AHEAD MOTHERFUCKERS!
1. The Plot
If you haven’t seen it, two people named Philip and Eul-Soon are fated to live opposite lives. If one succeeded, then fate would make it so the other didn’t. And, because of certain events, one of them has managed to live a whole life of luck and fulfillment while the other has had to struggle just to make ends meet. It’s a holistically unfair situation, until the day they finally meet. That’s when everything changes.
It’s an interesting premise and I’m not going to lie when I say that I actually liked the first few episodes. I even told my friends they should watch this drama, I thought it was so good. Hahahahahahahaha hOW WRONG I WAS.
The plot is interesting, but the execution of it was so poorly done. There are so many plot holes and unnecessary subplots, I could write a book on why it failed on every level. So, I’m not going to waste your time. Just know that not a single thing made sense about this show. Not a single. Thing. And, I spent the whole show analyzing the shit out of it to find some sembelence if clear storytelling and found none. Especially after episode 9. Which, by the way, was when you had to pay to watch the rest. It’s almost like they gave up once they knew the got us hooked with a few interesting episodes- oh wait.
2. The other woman/other man trope
For the love of Christmas stop with this trope. Just stop. The “other woman,” who is played by the talented Hahm Eun-jung, provided REALLY unnecessary tension. I honestly liked her better in Dream High and that was a cheese fest if I ever saw one. She was only there to fuck things up a little and honestly? It made no difference to the plot! And, when it did make a difference, it was ridiculous. One time near the beginning, she spread rumors to the press that Eul-Soon was a murderer and gets her fired. BUT, SHE WAS GOING TO BE FIRED ANYWAY! THE OTHER MAN WAS GOING TO FIRE HER AND EVERYTHING HAHM EUN-JUNG’S CHARACTER DID DIDN’T DO ANYTHING TO FURTHER THE PLOT! WHAT WAS THE POINT OF HER?!?!?!
*takes a deep breath*
The “other man” was a producer, or “third wheel guy” as I like to call him, that created.... a love triangle? If you can even call it that. Half the time I couldn’t tell if they were alluding to a love triangle because he really was so useless. And a tool! The show tries to make it seem like he’s this really sweet guy when they play sappy little music over their scenes, but honestly? He’s a misogynistic, asshole. I said it! He kept telling her that she should stop writing her script and stop following her dreams. But, she needed to keep writing ‘cause otherwise Philip was going to DIE! He even told her straight to her face that she should just let him die! He wanted so badly to date her that he wanted her to stop doing everything that made her happy? Yeah it was confusing so fuck this guy.
Did I mention he also fired her ‘cause he thought he knew what’s best for her? And she got her house painted with the word “murderer” on it because of that? ‘Cause he did. He did that.
Seriously fuck this guy he was the worst just... just no.
3. Philip is a prick
Our leading man couldn’t be more of an ass. Yes there’s a stereotype of bad boy leads in Korea and at this point it’s just something that we have to accept cause it rakes in money and fuck that. Just fuck it. I think all of us are sick and tired of this trope. But, do you know what’s funny about this show? It doesn’t even get THAT right.
Philip is the whiniest person on the face of this planet. I get that that’s his character and he’s just a major wuss, but he’s really, REALLY unlikeable. Eul-Soon tells him he’s going to die? He goes to the place she warned him not to go and gets shot. Eul-Soon kisses him at the press conference ‘cause there was a gun man that would have shot him if she hadn’t? Philip throws her out of his car ‘cause he thinks without evidence that she’s conning him. Even though he had a fuck ton of evidence to prove she wasn’t. There’s a woman outside his van getting assaulted? Of course he would get out of the van and try to stop it!
No. He didn’t. He just... He just sat there. And worried a little.
..............fUCK.
