I’ll never forgive 343 for the character assassination of Cortana.
Also all those other parts of the modern games but really the Cortana part is the one that bothers me the most.

"Taylor-made deals: how artists are following Swift’s rights example"
- The Guardian 9/1/24 [excerpt]
Prince and George Michael are bleak warnings from history, but the moves by Swift, Rodrigo and others can stand as roadmaps for the future. It also means the music industry has had to adapt away from contracts based on ownership. There are two kinds of rights at stake here: the rights to the master recordings of an artist’s work, and songwriting rights, known as publishing. One senior music publishing executive says their part of the business was ahead of the curve, explaining that publishing deals tend to work on exclusive licensing terms or retention periods. “Publishers pivoted from a rights-ownership business to the servicing of rights,” they say. Those retention periods are getting shorter, they add, down from about 25 years three decades ago to between 12 and 15 years today.
David Martin, CEO of the Featured Artists Coalition, says there is “a propensity towards owning rights” for artists, but some acts are still prepared to sign away ownership for what they think might be their only shot at the big time. “We have members who are still signing major label deals,” he says. “Some of the terms in some of those deals are terms that we’d expect artists to be thinking very carefully about.”
Message [,Brian - a partner at Courtyard Management] says he steers acts away from ownership-based contracts. “We have a default position that we won’t advise our artists to do life-of-copyright deals,” he says. “It’s not that we wouldn’t do them, but our strong advice would always be to come up with a licence arrangement of some description.”
This is the ideological underpinning of BMG and AWAL (Artists Without a Label), which is now under the ownership of Sony Music Entertainment. “The philosophy is flipping the relationship,” says Alistair Norbury, president of repertoire and marketing at BMG UK. “There had to be a fairer and more transparent way to work with the creative community.”
Acts on BMG’s roster – notably Kylie Minogue, Suede, Sigur Rós and Louis Tomlinson – are on licensing or assignment deals, so ownership of the recordings eventually reverts to them. “They want to be with a record label where they have creative control and ownership coming back to them at some point,” says Norbury.
[..]
Norbury believes that, with more choices for acts, music companies have to repeatedly prove their worth and think about mutual gains rather than offering one-sided deals that are land grabs for all the rights. He says, “You want something successful in a longterm partnership rather than owning something that failed.”

I love a modern-AU dadfics as much as anyone, but we have to stop glossing over how Wei Wuxian adopting A-Yuan would impact the Wens. Because if he does, something has gone terribly wrong for them and it would absolutely affect everyone involved.
The issue is that A-Yuan has primary caregivers other than Wei Wuxian who should be taking care of him, and if they're not in the picture then there’s going to be a reason why. The first person missing is Granny Wen, who is Wen Yuan’s actual caregiver in mdzs and would most likely be taking care of him. Unfortunately in most dad!xian fics she's immediately fridged or has her grandchild taken away from her due to her age off-screen—which would be deeply traumatic for everyone involved, especially if she’s subsequently unable to be involved in her grandchild's life.
The second person who would be taking care of A-Yuan before Wei Wuxian is Wen Qing. Sometimes the in-fic reason for her not being his caregiver is due to unavoidable circumstances (usually financial issues, which like. yikes), but most of the time it comes down to Wen Qing not really… wanting? to be a caregiver, often because she’s too busy or is putting her career first or is just too much of a GirlBoss. So she chooses to adopt out Wen Yuan to Wei Wuxian (again, off-screen) and that's the end of that.
Listen. Not everyone wants to be a parent. Not everyone should be a parent, or can. It’s a reasonable and valid decision to prioritize other parts of your life over parenthood—especially if being a parent or caregiver wasn’t your choice in the first place. But Wen Qing is going to have SOME kind of feeling about letting A-Yuan be adopted out of her family, and that feeling is probably going to be complicated or bittersweet, if not painful. Not only because she’s, you know, a human being with emotions, but Wen Qing’s primary motivation in the book is to take care of her family and keep them together. So her deciding “nah, I’m too much of a girlboss to be a caregiver, here’s a free kid and I’m going to feel absolutely nothing about this cause it’d be inconvenient for the fluff” is not only a dismissal of how complicated that decision would be for her, it’s also wildly out of character. No matter what the reason is, she's going to feel something about it.
(I’m not getting into how Wen Ning is never tapped as another potential caregiver btw because we're really not ready to talk about ableism just yet)
If you love the idea of Wei Wuxian adopting A-Yuan in your modern au, there’s are a couple of changes that can address this. One is to make Wen Yuan not related to Wen Qing and the shared surname is just a coincidence, like Lan Jingyi. Another is to have them be a blended family where they’re all caregivers for A-Yuan, or have Wei Wuxian be his primary caregiver but help A-Yuan actively maintain a connection to his family of origin. Or have Wei Wuxian adopt A-Yuan but the Wens actually get have feelings about it for once, regardless of why it happens—sorrow, frustration, relief, gratitude, regret, something. Let Wen Qing have complicated feelings and let them shape her relationship with Wei Wuxian, too, for better or worse or just messier. Maybe even let Wei Wuxian, who was also separated from his family of origin and is a walking ball of family trauma, have complicated feelings about it as well! Or go the extra mile and let A-Yuan have some emotions about it for once, because regardless of the context the loss or change of support structures is traumatic, especially for a small human.
Anyway read A Temporary Fix by Bosgood for your complex Wen family feels (feat. Lan Wangji adopting Wen Yuan, because all of this goes the same for him as well).

After 2005’s Wind in the Wires, a romantic tribute to escaping to the wild Cornish coast, Wolf’s third record, The Magic Position, his first for a major label, was the start of a journey that embraced mainstream pop but resulted in him losing all sense of his artistic identity. Management and A&R people became “authority figures” who interfered with his vision, especially on 2011 album Lupercalia: “You lose your primary colours,” he says. “If I think about Lupercalia now, it’s like hands around my neck.”
Standing out started to be a curse as Wolf became “spiritually exhausted” with the media’s focus on his sexuality and appearance. “I spent a lot of time saying ‘Look at this album that I’ve made’, and everyone else going: ‘Flamboyant!’” he recalls. “But that’s just how I looked; my sexuality was just who I was.”

The French Navy has abruptly withdrawn support from the Operation Prosperity Guardian, a US-led multinational navy force aimed at combating Yemen’s Pro-Palestine maritime war in the Red Sea.
France’s decision comes in the wake of US leadership facing growing criticism over US ship powers leaving American sailors vulnerable to the Yemeni Armed Forces “without adequate protection.”
According to reports, the French Navy withdrew from the US-led Operation Prosperity Guardian after a representative walked out of the operation’s first meeting with US officials. The French, however, have commenced escorting their own counterships including the containerships CMA CGM Pegasus, CMA CGM George Washington and APL Salalah, through the Red Sea. The US on the other hand, have reportedly abandoned their own American-flagged ships stranded in the region, some awaiting an entire week for escort.
It’s still unclear if France will quit the operation entirely or if they will assist after prioritizing their own ships. According to one source acquainted with the French navy, other European ship owners are likely to get secondary priority after French owned ships.
This development marks a significant shift in the geopolitical dynamics of maritime security in one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes. The French decision underscores a growing crisis in shipping that puts national and regional priority ahead of global needs, while the US focuses on protecting all shipping – including ships owned by rivals like China – at the expense of the dwindling fleet of US-flagged merchant ships.
The Operation Prosperity Guardian initially expected widespread participation but only ten nations joined with the Netherlands contributing a few staff offices only. America’s naval allies such as Australia, Japan and South Korea reportedly abstained. The Pentagon claimed that ten additional silent partners had also joined the operation but shipping experts assumed otherwise.
According to media reports, the rather abrasive announcement led to confusion as shipping companies felt uninformed citing that few practical details were known of the coalition.

~The Gatekeeper~
"An ancient relic of the bygone era of the Forerunners. Said to be the first of the guardians, forged by the Composer from the will of the Didact himself. However, it is said the Gatekeeper was locked away because of the danger it possessed and hidden on a small world. Where it couldn't be disturbed."
Wooooo man, this thing was a project. Took me almost 32 hours to complete! Originally, I was going to design this guardian in my simplified style for my but.... decided to go full-blown detail 🫠
I'm really happy with how this turned out and was a fun challenge!
Prepare to see the Gatekeeper appear in Towards the Sky later on

Promethean Appreciation Post
Made this since I like the Prometheans (especially the Crawlers, I find them adorable) and I did miss them when I played Halo Infinite’s Campaign.
Not sure if the Warden Eternal counts as a Promethean so I added him just in case he does.

After he left the White House, former President Donald Trump allegedly shared sensitive information about U.S. nuclear submarines with an Australian billionaire who is a member of his Mar-a-Lago club, according to a pair of reports published on Thursday.
Trump shared the information with Anthony Pratt during an April 2021 conversation at the Palm Beach, Fla., golf club, according to ABC News, which first reported the development, citing sources familiar with the matter. The New York Times also confirmed the former president shared the information with Pratt, citing two people familiar with the matter.
The revelation was reported to special counsel Jack Smith's office, which charged Trump this year with mishandling classified documents, and prosecutors and FBI agents have twice interviewed Pratt this year about the discussion, ABC News reported.
Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign spokesman, Steven Cheung, said in response to questions about the report, “These illegal leaks are coming from sources which totally lack proper context and relevant information. The Department of Justice should investigate the criminal leaking, instead of perpetrating their baseless witch-hunts while knowing that President Trump did nothing wrong, has always insisted on truth and transparency, and acted in a proper manner, according to the law.”
NBC News has also reached out to Pratt’s company for comment.
Pratt recounted that he told Trump during their conversation that Australia should buy submarines from the U.S., and an excited Trump "leaning" toward Pratt as if to be discreet, told him two pieces of information about American submarines, ABC reported, citing the anonymous sources. Trump shared the number of warheads that U.S. submarines typically carry and how close they can get to Russian submarines without being detected, according to both ABC News and The New York Times.
Trump didn't show any government documents to him during the meeting or any other time at Mar-a-Lago, sources told ABC News.
Pratt, executive global chairman of cardboard company Pratt Industries, then shared Trump's remarks with at least 45 other people through emails and conversations, reported ABC News, including journalists, Australian officials, three former Australian prime ministers and employees at his company.
According to the Times, Pratt is among more than 80 people whom prosecutors from Smith's office have identified as potential witnesses who could testify at Trump's trial that's slated to begin in May in Fort Pierce, Fla.
The special counsel's office declined to comment on the reports.
Just so we're all clear:
You can be jailed for taking photos inside a submarine but this motherfucker tells some rando billionaire about it's armament and capabilities and gets to lounge at his golf resort...
A tale of two Justice systems, indeed.
