DOLLAR TREE HAS DONE IT AGAIN

For those who might not follow action figure news, Greenbrier International started a Dollar Tree exclusive action figure that made quite a few waves by being legitimately good toys (and accessories) for $1.25 plus tax. The plastic was good, the painting was passable, the story was delightfully cheesy, and it now has a small community of fans.

Evidently, this success is one they're wanting to duplicate for the young girl demographic.

Introducing, the Friends Forever Club

With the cutest, most Babysitter's Club-esque backstory I've seen in a doll line, these are honestly quite impressive for what they are. They're a group of girls who met and became friends at Science Camp.

Carina is into astronomy and wants to grow up to be an astronaut.

Alanis loves tech and video games, and wants to be a computer engineer! (and influencer but we don't need to talk about that)

Viera loves rocks and gemstones and wants to be a minerologist and geologist! Twofer, this gal.

And Iha loves the ocean and wants to be a Marine Biologist!

All the dolls have fairly simple joints, the head, arms, and legs all swivel (no ball joints). The clothing they come with is a soft plastic that actually tabs together quite nicely (I've seen $20 dolls with worse plastic connections.) There are fabric fashion packs that are slightly better than the regular doll clothes, but they still aren't that great.

Are they jawdropping, stunning quality? No. But these are as good or better than some $10 dollar dolls I've seen, have slightly different face molds, and I'm glad to see a line of (good) dolls priced affordably enough for any budget. I hope this line sticks around, because I think these could make a few little girls (and everyone who isn't) quite happy.

Today's woodland adventure!! I went back to retrieve a turtle that I had a sneaking suspicion was actually alive and alas, it was. I'm very happy for it to be alive, I probably scared the daylights outta it when I poked him. I kept looking off the game trails and in thickets but didn't find anything. Even if I don't find any trinkets I'm still always thankful I got to experience nature like this, it's a magical place really I adore it with my whole being. Sometimes places are overflowing with magic and it overcomes your desire to be rational, this is one of those places. I swear the paths change and greenbrier will spawn overnight to block your path to certain areas.

I went back to an area I used to talk with The Folk at and bury offerings, and right in front of the log I would sit in was this huge barred owl feather!! So cool!! Then like 5 minutes after that I found a cat in a clearing :)) I also found a nifty lil Zippo lighter in the creek that I hope I can get fixed up !! :D

Rest in Peace, Chief

I just got word that a true legend, Phil Faini, passed away Wednesday, June 7. You can read about Phil’s illustrious career in this news release from West Virginia University. I’m going to tell you what Phil meant to me.

When I was attending Fairmont Senior High School, band was my favorite thing. Yes, I enjoyed marching band, but more than that, we had a percussion ensemble. This was a class that I and the rest of my fellow percussionists took. The rest of the band members took concert band, but concert band is relatively boring for percussionists. There’s not a lot for us to do. Our parts are relatively simple with a lot of rests, and most of the time is spent working the wind instruments. Not all high schools have percussion ensembles, but my band director, Barry Vingle, was a percussionist. He received his Master’s degree at West Virginia University in 1976 where he learned from Phil Faini.

One of my close high school friends, Todd Caldwell, invited me to attend a WVU Percussion Ensemble concert, and I was mesmerized. It wasn’t just a concert—it was a tour de force of music, african dance, and theatrical presentation. The staging and lighting were as impactful as the performance. The theater was packed. I returned year after year, never missing a concert and purchasing the recordings on cassette. I’ve digitized those and cherish them. Phil Faini knew how to put on a show, and his enthusiasm was infectious. I told myself that one day, I was going to perform in one of those concerts.

My high school percussion ensemble played several pieces that Phil Faini composed or arranged. We played his arrangement of El Cumbanchero—probably my favorite piece to play on marimba—his arrangement of Sleigh Ride, and his composition Highlife. We were learning Highlife my junior year, and Mr. Vingle invited Phil Faini to work with us for a day, and then direct us in the concert. It was an amazing experience, and I remember Phil telling the audience afterward that we performed the piece better than a lot of college ensembles.

The summer after my junior year, I was accepted into the prestigious Governor’s Honors Academy for which I stayed at WVU for a month with the top students from every county in the state. It was a life-forming experience. It’s where I met my wife. It’s where I got to learn from Phil Faini every day in a world percussion class where we played African drums and steel drums. He introduced us to Ellie Manette, the inventor of the steel drum. Like his college students, we came to call Phil “Chief,” an honorific he picked up from his study of African percussion. During my senior year, all of us GHA students were invited to perform with the WVU percussion ensemble, Percussion 90, at The Greenbrier, a luxurious resort in southern WV. These experiences cemented my desire to attend WVU.

And so I did. Now, I wasn’t a music major, but I joined the Mountaineer Marching Band where I continued to learn from the masters students that I got to know during GHA. Then Phil Faini became Dean of the College of Creative Arts, and my Graphic Design class interacted with him as we designed a new logo for the school. Oh, and remember the goal I had set for myself years before? When I reached my senior year of college, I decided I had some room in my schedule and signed up for the freshman percussion ensemble. I took that class in the fall semester knowing that come December, I would be part of the WVU Percussion Concert. I performed one piece with the freshman ensemble—a comical piece where we all started playing a line of snares and eventually moved to a base drum in the center that we circled in a little rhythmic game, leaving the drum when we were “out”—and then performed in the finale, which was inspired by STOMP! Phil Faini’s concerts always had a finale that brought all of the various ensembles together for a big finish. Life goal achieved.

Then I went on with my life. I graduated, got married, went on to grad school, and started a career. The concert that I performed in was the last WVU percussion concert I attended while Phil Faini was at the school. When my daughter became a percussionist, I decided to take her to a concert to show her what a percussion ensemble was. I was disappointed. It was a small concert, poorly attended. There was no flair, no drama. Phil Faini was retired, and apparently the current faculty didn’t have his vision or energy. But there was a little old man sitting two rows in front of us. I made a point to approach him after the concert. I re-introduced myself—he didn’t remember me—and then I introduced my daughter. He smiled and nodded and said something polite. I didn’t expect him to remember me, but I felt compelled to let him see just a little bit of the legacy he passed down.

Now I play drums every week in a worship band, and my daughter is in college studying music therapy.

In June 2019, Bethesda announced a major update, which introduces human NPCs, however the update was delayed. According to Howard, this system allows Bethesda to tell a story whilst giving players a greater ability to create their own narratives. Each of these elements had previously been used in the series, often to provide backstory for characters and the world of the game whilst remaining separate from the main narrative. Fallout 76 instead uses a combination of NPCs in the form of robots, recordings such as collectible holotapes, terminals throughout the game world, and environmental storytelling where the player uncovers fragments of a narrative by exploring locations that they piece together themselves.

This required Bethesda to change their approach to storytelling as previous games in the series relied on NPCs to assign quests, engage the player in dialog and advance the overall narrative. Upon release Fallout 76 did not feature any human non-player characters (NPCs) as all surviving humans are other players. The system is designed to encourage the player to recognise the situation they are in and choose perks that aid them rather than passively selecting them and having them for the duration of the game. The player can merge similar cards together to create more powerful-albeit more expensive-perks. Each card has a value and the player can adopt perks equal to their respective value for example, if the player has a strength rating of five, then they may equip strength perks worth five points. These perks fall into each of the SPECIAL categories and take the form of trading cards. Players are able to choose perks, or passive abilities that offer gameplay bonuses. As the player levels up, they are able to spend skill points to boost their attributes on a scale of one to fifteen. Character attributes fall into one of seven categories: strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck. The game includes revisions to the SPECIAL progression system. The game features numerous new mutated monsters, several of which-such as the Mothman and the Flatwoods monster-were inspired by West Virginian folklore. It features recreations of real locations in the region, including the West Virginia State Capitol, The Greenbrier, Woodburn Circle, New River Gorge Bridge, and Camden Park. The game world is called " Appalachia" and is a representation of West Virginia. The game features an open world four times the size of that of Fallout 4. system-a mechanic in the series that allows players to target specific locations on an enemy's body to attack, which previously paused the game temporarily-is used in Fallout 76 as a real-time system. Elements of previous Fallout games are present and are modified to work with the real-time game. Howard described the delay as being necessary to allow Bethesda time to assure the stability of public servers. These private servers allow players to invite friends and to prevent undesirable aspects of player versus player gameplay such as griefing from affecting an individual player's experience of the game. While the game was expected to launch with public servers only, executive producer Todd Howard revealed plans for private servers to be introduced some time after the game's launch. The servers for the game are public dedicated servers, with the player automatically allocated to one of them. Players may play individually or with a party of up to three others. Wastelanders, an update that reintroduces non-playable characters in the series, launched in April 2020.įallout 76 is Bethesda Game Studios' first online multiplayer game. The game sold 1.4 million copies by the end of 2018. A number of Bethesda's responses and attempts to provide ongoing support for Fallout 76 in the months following its launch were met with criticism.
