Shopping Softness
Even though it was a hot afternoon in the middle of France, chills ran over my body as I entered the little cobblestone alley. The song of the cicadas suddenly sounded much quieter, somewhere very far behind me. Three steps, and it felt as if I’d travelled right into the Middle Ages, where narrow houses of stone and patterned woodwork stood waiting for my arrival. The witch’s house was just as distinct and colourful as all the others.
A bell tinkled as I hesitantly walked into her shop, where she made me wait for barely a moment before making her appearance and showing me all kinds of stoppered little glass bottles on crooked wooden shelves: blue for depression, red for anger management, yellow for energy, purple to strengthen one’s heart.
“I’d much rather soften my heart,” I admitted, not quite meeting her eyes. “I’d like to grow more patient, more soothing, more caring.”
“So you aren’t looking for a potion at all!” the witch informed me triumphantly, before uttering a series of kissy noises. “Here, Serafina!”
A beautiful black cat with the shiniest fur I’d ever seen trotted from behind the counter, bumped right into my legs, and I could feel my heart melt as soon as I gave in to her demands for petting.
[Image description: In this photo, the camera looks into a narrow cobblestone alley between half-timbered houses. On the right, the panels between the wooden beams at the top floor of the front house have been painted red, and the lower floor is built in stone. Behind it is a house with a yellow top floor to which a lantern is attached, and on the left is another yellow top floor and some more wooden structures. At the other end of the alley three people are standing in front of a brown door.]
