@i-run-a-trash-blog Tagged me in a Name your Top 5 Albums and Top 5 Tracks for each one thingy, so I’ll be happy to oblige! For something to be a great album, in my eyes, it must be greater than the sum of its parts. 

Whether or not the songs are good is kinda besides the point.

1. Pink Floyd’s The Wall (Not huge on “Another Brick in the Whatever” but I’ve listened to this album all the way through more than any other. The guitar bit at the end of One of My Turns is about as Music-With-Rocks-In-It as you get).

Storia Di Musica #123 - Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Music From The Penguin Cafè, 1976

La storia di oggi inizia con un incubo. Così almeno Simon Jeffes ha sempre raccontato come gli nacque la prima idea della sua creatura. Era in Francia nel 1972 e dopo una cattiva digestione Jeffes sognò dei pinguini che suonavano in un grande edificio anonimo. Polistrumentista, chitarrista elegante, Jeffes lavora nel mondo della pubblicità e della musica, ma ha sempre quest’idea in testa. Per caso, alcuni suoi nastri vengono portati a Brian Eno, che a metà anni ‘70 fondò una sua casa discografica, la Obscure, che produsse alcuni tra i più eleganti dischi di musica elettronica e minimale, nel suo pur esiguo catalogo (una ventina di titoli in tutto). Eno dà una possibilità a Jeffes, che quasi non crede che così può realizzare il suo sogno: si immagina un locale in una languida ed esotica isola misteriosa, “un misto di Italia e Giappone” (Jeffes dixit), creando musica che la resident band sciorina agli avventori. La Penguin Cafè Orchestra era formata da Jeffes con Steve Nye alle tastiere e come ingegnere del suono (forte delle sue esperienze con alcuni dei grandi gruppi del progressive inglese), il violoncello di Helen Liebmann, la viola e il violino di Gavyn Wright, l’ukulele di  Neil Rennie e la voce e l’estro di Emily Young, che diventerà una delle più grandi scultrici inglese del ‘900, che disegnerà l’iconica copertina con i Pinguini e che è la compagna di Jeffes. Music From The Penguin Cafè, che è pubblicato nel 1976, è un delizioso e delicato disco di “jazz da camera” che mischia con aria sognante le idee del fondatore, rimanendo distanti da una certa seriosità del genere rimanendo fresco, gioioso e coinvolgente. Penguin Cafè Single è un po’ il manifesto del suono della band: una languida e divertente musica jazz con tocchi esotici, gli archi pimpanti e vivaci e una bella aria di divertimento, di rilassatezza: diventerà un piccolo must e una delle canzoni più famose di tutto il loro repertorio. Poi la prima di una serie di esperimenti: la suite Zopf (che diventerà in seguito il nome della casa discografica di Jeffes) è composta da 7 stanze: tra viaggi in paesi lontani (From The Colonies dove Jeffes suona il cuatro, una particolare chitarra del sud america), momenti di rilassata malinconia (In A Sydney Motel, brano cantato dallo stesso Jeffes), litanie un po’ bizzarre (la ripetizione di della parola “milk”, con la voce della Young, in Milk), c’è spazio per delicatissimi momenti (Surface Tension dagli struggenti archi), uno strumentale elettrico al ring modulator (Pigtail) e addirittura una piccola apoteosi (Coronation) e la ripresa di un brano barocco di un semisconoscuto musicista inglese (Giles Farnaby's Dream dove Jeffes suona con maestria la spinetta, uno dei nonni del pianoforte). La lunga e suggestiva The Sound Of Someone You Love Who's Going Away And It Doesn't Matter è bellissima, così come i due brani finali, le splendide Hugebaby e Chartered Flight. L’album conquista un piccolo e affezionato gruppo di cultori, che dovrà però aspettare alcuni anni per il ritorno alla discografia: Jeffes infatti è più volte chiamato come arrangiatore e produttore, e tra le cose che curerà c’è pure la storica cover di My Way di Sid Viciuos per il film The Rock’n’Roll Swindle. Nel 1981 la Penguin Cafè ritorna in formazione allargata per lo splendido Penguin Cafè Orchestra: in esso c’è la famosa Telephone And Rubber Band, che ha come base un vero loop telefonico della British Telephone. Per capire che tipo è Jeffes racconto questo episodio: durante una tournée in Giappone, dietro il teatro, Jeffes trova un harmonium abbandonato. Lo spedisce in Inghilterra, lo aggiusta e su di esso inciderà una melodia formidabile, Music For A Found Harmonium, che diventerà una canzone usatissima in film (Malcom, film australiano del 1986 ma anche Napoleon Dynamite del 2004), spot, programmi televisivi. Jeffes è un vulcano di idee, e scriverà addirittura le musiche per un balletto, Still Life, con le coreografie di David Bintley e nella prima edizione, prodotta e rappresentata al Covent Garden, la voce narrante era quella di Jeremy Irons. Tra concerti, passioni per l’Italia, dove ha uno zoccolo duro di fan, dischi sempre molto belli, inizia a costruire un fantastico studio di registrazione nei pressi di Bath. Che però, sfortunatamente, Jeffes non riesce a vedere finito, dato che una malattia lo porta via. Ma il sogno continua: Arthur Jeffes, figlio di Simon e Emily Young, riprende il marchio Penguin Cafè, richiamando gli stessi musicisti che collaborarono con il padre, riportando sia in concerto che in studio l’Ensemble, proponendo sia i classici che nuove idee, tra cui a me piace la stupenda Catania (da The Red Book del 2014), dedicata alla città etnea. Ascoltando la gioia e la delicatezza delle loro composizioni, ricche di ricami musicali, si trasmette la bellezza del sogno di Jeffes di creare qualcosa di unico e personale: una musica che riempie di sorrisi e che ti spinge a cercare dove sia quest’isola misteriosa dove il Penguin Cafè accoglie i propri avventori, secondo il motto del proprietario che era: we wade in a sea of imperfect solutions.
