ai makes everything so boring. deepfakes will never be as funny as clipping together presidential speeches. ai covers will never be as funny as imitating the character. ai art will never be as good as art drawn by humans. ai chats will never be as good as roleplaying with other people. ai writing will never be as good as real authors

GenAI is the Engine Driving a new Data Rush
Tumblr media
The rush to ChatGPT adoption has happened at a speed unmatched in the history of technical innovations. This user-friendly generative AI (GenAI) application secured a staggering 100 million users in only two months.
One year after its launch, we commissioned a survey to understand if GenAI tools like ChatGPT have kicked off a new industrial revolution. With “All eyes on securing GenAI,” we wanted to reveal how organizations utilize GenAI tools, the security implications this presents, and how organizations could better protect intellectual property and customer data as their use continues to evolve.
The gap between GenAI opportunity and risk reminds me of the great rushes of the past, i.e., those for gold, oil, or land, that transformed our society and economy. In terms of being a historic development with a significant impact, GenAI belongs on that list.
As a first step to this, every organization has to realize that they are already part of the data and AI ecosystem, thanks to the free flow of information on the internet. They must also be aware of their responsibility for the data currently feeding that ecosystem.
Some countries worldwide have started to guide organizations on their data use by implementing regulations around their governance.

honestly i think a very annoying part about the AI art boom is that techbros are out here going BEHOLD, IT CAN DO A REASONABLE FACSIMILE OF GIRL WITH BIG BOOBA, THE PINNACLE OF ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENT and its like
no it’s fucking not! That AI wants to do melty nightmare fractal vomit so fucking bad and you are shackling it to a post and force-feeding it the labor of hard-working artists when you could literally pay someone to draw you artisanal hand-crafted girls with big boobs to your exact specifications and let your weird algorithms make art that can be reasonably used to represent horrors beyond human comprehension

There is Currently No Ethical Use of Generative AI
Just saw a post arguing that text generative AI is just a tool, the way a paintbrush or a keyboard is a tool, and that writers can and should use it as needed.
I counter with a solid fuck no.
There are a lot of problems with the "it's just a tool" argument. With keyboards and voice recognition, you're still selecting your words, putting them in order, actually writing. If you aren't making your own words and sentences, you aren't writing. You're an editor, and you're claiming someone else's work as your own.
There is no ethical use of generative AI when your AI is trained on stolen content and requires a ridiculous amount of energy and water to run.

incredibly funny how a bunch of people interpreted “ao3 was almost certainly scraped as part of the gpt training dataset because it’s a big easily accessible body of english language text, so you can prompt gpt with surprisingly vague stuff and it will autocomplete with snarry underage or wangxian a/b/o” as “elon musk Personally is Currently scraping ao3 and training an ai to plagiarize fic, going to go lock ALL my works on ao3 IMMEDIATELY”
its. its already in the dataset. how do you think these things work. “locking my works to registered users only until after the scraping stops!” my dude the ao3 team just needs to like add a robots.txt and check the useragent and stuff to prevent this from happening in the future*, and theyre already on it, but not only is the existing body of work presumably In the Dataset, the model has ALREADY BEEN TRAINED. that omelet isnt going to get unscrambled
(*im assuming that everyone gathering datasets for large language models is being reasonably Polite about it bc these are both very simple to circumvent — if this assumption is false then ao3 might need to graduate to Offensive Measures but also we would definitely need to bully the culprits off of hacker news)
anyway im not taking any Stance one way or the other on the “ai art debate” (other than maybe “none of you know what the hell you’re talking about”) but we’re definitely going to see a whole new world of copyright claims against the big art models and ml researchers developing new tools for “removing” stuff from a trained model, and i for one think that it will be SO entertaining to watch

i just found out about one of the most powerful adhd tools i've ever seen online. i think i'll actually use this one in real life. holy shit
features:
Magic ToDo, which helps you break down tasks into smaller tasks
Tumblr media
Formalizer, which helps you adjust your tone depending on your situation - it can make you sound more or less formal, or more or less decisive/clear
Tumblr media
Judge, which assesses your tone to help you understand how you're coming across, or you could put in someone else's text to see what it thinks they meant
Tumblr media
Estimator, which can help you guess how long a certain task is going to take you
Tumblr media
and last but not least, the Compiler, which takes an amorphous braindump and magically rearranges it into a list of tasks, which can then be sent to the Magic ToDo list and broken down into more managable pieces!

These are statements that can co-exist:
Data scraping methods used to train AI text and image generators should be regulated by governments.
Researchers, journalists, and archivists use the same data scraping for their work, and AI text and image generators also have legitimate ethical uses.
Data scraping is legal in many places and it's not easy for websites with publicly available data to prevent it.
Some people have had/will have their income negatively impacted by AI-generated content. That sucks and they have my sympathy.
It's unethical to fire employees or contractors (or pay them less, etc.) only to replace their work with content from AI text or image generators.
It's shitty that tech bros are making fun of many people's concerns about AI-generated content.
It's shitty that a lot of people are throwing around blanket statements like, "Anyone who uses AI-anything is a thief."
It's likely that most individuals will never be harmed by AI-generated content because such generators do not 'steal' or copy specific works of literature or visual art—it's more like they're taking averages from huge amounts of scraped public data.
I'm concerned about both the data collection methods used to train AI content generators and how much information they have already used for training.
AI text and image generation is not inherently evil, nor are people who use it. It's a technology with many applications and can be used for both ethical and unethical purposes.
Capitalism is unethical.

(no, I don't check my notes, so if you want to call me names for pointing out that this is a complex and nuanced issue, have fun with that)

Tumblr artists, I'm running a poll on your opinion on Generative AI-created images
Bias is welcomed (and encouraged)
This isn't an official poll (run by little old me, and only me) but I'm writing an essay on the topic so. Go ahead and ratio it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
PLEASE if you feel like leaving your thoughts on the topic in the tags, or sending an ask (the anon option will always be there) to justify your answer, DO IT <3
Depending on how this goes, I might bring in some ideas from either side as evidence (I can also credit your username along with the statement - if you'd like credit please lmk in the same place you gave your opinion, everything I include will be anonymous by default)
Please be polite, it literally costs you nothing (and it's quicker and easier)
I'm not going to bring my personal opinion into this as that may sway the results, but that said if you want to make the results as biased as possible (ahem voter fraud ahem) go ahead
Please reblog for a larger sample size!
Liking a post doesn't really help here, I want as many people to see this and vote as possible <3
the poll will be open to votes for a week starting Friday, 5th April 2024
