Hillbilly Elegy (2020)

Movies like Hillbilly Elegy are the worst. They trick you into thinking you’re seeing an uplifting story. This is not a good movie but it's hard to figure out why unless you really look at it. That’s what I’m here for.

J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso) is preparing for an interview at Yale when he receives a call from his sister, Lindsay (Haley Bennett). Their mother, Bev (Amy Adams) is in the hospital after overdosing. As J.D. travels back “home” to Ohio, he reminisces about his tumultuous childhood.

On the surface, Hillbilly Elegy is hopeful. It’s about a young man whose mom became addicted to drugs, who grew up fatherless, was abused emotionally and physically, eventually went on to live with his grandmother, worked hard, joined the military, and eventually studied at a prestigious school. Wow. If he did it, I can do it! You can do it! That person living in a run-down house and suffering from addiction can do it! I'll tell you how Hillbilly Elegy deceives you. Everyone we meet is heavily flawed. J.D. was a juvenile delinquent before the military straightened him out. His mom was an unfit mother. Even his grandmother is only “nice” when compared to her daughter. Nonetheless, you grow attached to these characters by seeing their story. This makes you want to see them happy. When the film delivers on this - even by simply showing J.D. caring for his mom (basically forgiving her) - they’re "winning". This makes you feel good. That means it's a good movie, right?

While the film is based on true events, J.D. is an anomaly. Most people cannot pull themselves up by their bootstraps and working hard is hardly ever enough. The film doesn’t acknowledge this. Instead, it perpetuates stereotypes by showing an incomplete, simplified truth.

Director Ron Howard never challenges you to think. We see Bev as an addict, but only briefly. Her struggle is almost entirely off-screen. When J.D. is preparing for his interview at Yale, he’s overwhelmed because he doesn’t know which is the soup spoon, which wine is the “correct” choice. All the poor people we see are addicts, miserable, in unhappy marriages, etc. You understand why they became unbalanced adults. What are these rich people’s excuses for being snooty and elitist? How is someone on the Vance’s level supposed to hoist themselves out of the muck of poverty? By putting their lives on the line and serving in the military? What a patriotic solution!

Most frustrating is that the movie is professional in many ways. The end credits feature photos and home movies of the real-life Vance family and every performer is a dead-on lookalike. Amy Adams and Glenn Close are practically unrecognizable. This means the film is bad… but also award/nomination worthy for the performances. Why not? It’s possible to have bad performances in otherwise good movies. this is an example of the reverse.

Hillbilly Elegy wants to give this group of people a voice but it doesn’t, not really. It’s like an episode of Intervention; all you get to see are the juicy bits, the most dramatic, the most chaotic, the most screen-worthy scenes. Everything else? That’s boring so it gets left on the cutting room floor. (April 6, 2021)
