GMC Syclone vs Typhoon: cooking up a storm - Simon Hucknall @Classic & Sports Car
‘Think of it as a Porsche 911 that really “hauls”,’ reads GMC’s 1991 advert for this discreet-looking pick-up.Glitzy wheels and a subtly lower ride-height aside, it could have been the truck that ma or pa used to collect groceries from Fresh Pickens, just off Route 66.But the Porsche-shaming data running below would have shattered that quaint image faster than a moonshiner’s quarter-mile…

From Wild to Wilder - John Gerber
Tumblr media
Quick question – how many GMC Typhoons have you ever seen? Did you know such a vehicle even existed? Well, it did, even though this muscular big brother to General Motors Corporation’s ubiquitous Jimmy was only on the scene for a brief span of two years, 1992 and 1993. During that time a grand total of 4,697 units were built, and it’s hard to say how many road-worthy examples survive today. Two of the best of this relatively rare breed are alive and well in Fort Wayne, Indiana, both proudly owned by John Gerber. And even though they look similar at first glance, these Frost White beauties are polar opposites under the skin. From the factory, the Typhoon featured a Mitsubishi TD06-17C/8 cm2 turbocharger and Garrett Water/Air intercooler attached to a 4.3 L LB4 V6 intake manifold, fuel system, exhaust manifolds, and a 48mm twin-bore throttle body from the 5.7 L GM small block engine. Today, both of Gerber’s Typhoons are still V6 turbo powered, but that’s where the similarity to anything bolted together in Detroit ends. There’s little doubt that wild to wilder best describes these two fantastic hot rods. The existence of these superb vehicles is a true testament of the skill, vision and meticulous attention to detail lavished on them by their owner and by everyone who participated in both builds. The first GMC Typhoon that Gerber bought was this pristine example, used primarily for car audio competition in the ‘90s. He eventually decided to beef up the drivetrain by making a number of significant modifications. While still utilizing the original all-wheeldrive, Gerber’s rolling sound factory runs through the quarter-mile timers in the 10.60s at over 130 mph, all while weighing in at 4,300 pounds! The engine is a 266-cubicinch GM Bowtie V6 NASCAR Busch Series piece topped by Brodix 23-degree heads. The combo includes a F.A.S.T. Classic EFI system and a PTE BB 76mm turbo. The transmission is a custombuilt GM 4L80E unit that transfers the power to Nitto tires mounted on polished 17-inch ZR1 wheels. Stopping power is provided by Wilwood 4-piston disk brakes. In the cabin, the original leather interior is complimented by Auto Meter gauges and, of course, a killer sound system. The whole package is set off by the factory original GM Arctic White paint. John thanks Bill Davis Chassis, Hires Speed Shop, Stephens & Hull Racing Engines and RPM Transmissions for their help with the project. Starting now: PULP STORYTIME!
I’ve been running one of the best games of my life over the last few years. I’ve been writing them up over at SA, but that site is gated and I wanted to share those stories with a larger audience. I’m gonna be posting some tales of pulp adventure from my table, weekly. Enjoy!
The Park-North Snipe Hunt!
“You don’t have a piece,” laughed the gangster, “and now you won’t see your 14th birthday.” “Bang,” said Devika, pointing a finger gun. Kulfi obliged from a block away. The mook wouldn’t see the sunrise. In this game, we play a collection of pulp gentlemen thieves, grabbing & nabbing in 1930s New York. And an errant detail changed the course of the entire session. The session started with us trying to steal the Doomsday Clock, a pastiche of the Antikythera mechanism. Someone beat us to the punch, so we were forced to investigate…which led us to the local Syndicate. While looting a safe in a mafia speakeasy, I decided to forge a note, taking credit, signed “the Gray Gargoyle”. Who’s that? Well, it’s a costumed adventurer who smashes crime, especially art crime! Total ass-pull, but it fit the setting. We didn’t think much more about it, until our adventures led us to an upstate airfield, where mafiosos were trying to smuggle the Clock out of the country. I spent a fate point to declare that they were already being stopped… by the Gray Gargoyle! Yes, he dove off the air control tower and with his Gliding Cape, intercepted the plane! We rescued him from airfield security, but we had a plan. Since we were gentlemen, it wouldn’t make sense to just kill the guy and take the artifact. After all, that’s not thievery, that’s mugging. So we engineered a plan where we gathered the mob boss who was after the artifact, killed him with a sniper rifle, and escaped in the confusion. Unfortunately, the Gargoyle didn’t take the bait and get himself killed in the fracas, instead watching our escape from the valet stand.
Running the circus from the monkey cage!
The campaign continues, with a rotating GM. This week and last, we were joined by Evelyn St. Cloud, insecure Circus Aerialist*. This week was a flashback featuring her and mystic orphan Devika Velyapur, trying to pull some scams at the Hagenbeck–Wallace circus. And while we prevented an accident, saved the circus and altered history, most notable were three things: —Evelyn only agreeing to help prevent a train crash because of Devika goading her, targeting her aspect “Anything you can do…”. —In order to chase the villain, we convinced the circus strongman to bend the frames of two penny farthings together to create an ersatz duo bicycle. —We discovered the villain of the adventure, Mabel Smith Douglass, was someone we met last week. And since this was a flashback, that limited our options. Highwire-walker Evie jumped onto the plane. But while she couldn’t open the door, all she could do was force a landing. And without a suitable escape route, there was no way to convince airport officials that the villain had stolen property. So after some fisticuffs, we swore revenge on someone who died at the end of last session. *There was a brief cameo by Smuggler ‘Typhoon’ Mike McGinty, but he had to leave after the first hour. He discovered a tiger sleeping on his boat and used his connections to try and sell it to a buyer in Canada.
For reference, Devika, Lord Simon, and Javid, our initial trio:

He was better known later as the chief of Oldsmobile, but GM manager John Rock first made his real mark at GMC, where he landed in 1982 after stints with Buick and Holden. GMC has always sat in Chevrolet’s shadow and by 1986-87, Rock was pushing to differentiate GMC from its sibling. That didn’t quite happen, but before Rock was transferred to Olds for an emergency rescue of the Rocket brand in 1992, his time at GMC culminated in a pair of absurd, unforgettable performance trucks. They were the GMC Syclone pickup, based on the S-15/Sonoma, and the Typhoon SUV, based on the S-15 Jimmy. Humble beginnings, maybe, but real rocket ships at the time. Originally, what became the Syclone was just a concept, one of three builds GMC showed off in 1989 - the others being the Kalahari (telegraphing the forthcoming 4-door S-15 Jimmy) and the far-out mid-engine Centaur, kind of pickup crossed with a Toyota Previa. The Centaur never went anywhere and the Kalahari became the =4-door Jimmy, but the Syclone (spelled with an S because Ford still had the rights to “Cyclone”) was something niche that Rock wanted to build for real. The concept was powered by a Buick Turbo 3.8, but to build a production version GMC created a 280-hp version of the Chevy/GMC LB4 4.3L V6 with a Mitsubishi-sourced turbo and 14lbs of intercooled boost. It used the AWD hardware from the GMC Safari minivan to put power to all four wheels via a 4-speed auto box. Because the S-15 was cheap to produce and the run relatively limited, Rock’s team could dress it up and set it up the way they wanted - it was lowered, given a body kit and graphics similar to the concept version, and turned loose. With ¼-mile times in the low 14s and a 0-60 figure of 4.3 seconds, it was a very fast vehicle for the day, and for a GMC a completely unexpected factory hot rod capable of seeing off a Ferrari 348 in the stoplight grand prix. The tradeoff was that it lost much of the S-15’s functionality, with only a 500-lb. payload rating. Syclone buyers didn’t care. Rarity was baked in, as the run was always planned to be 3,000 trucks. In fact 2,998 Syclones were built over about 7 months before the project came to an end. https://www.instagram.com/p/CH-vzJPFgBa/?igshid=lkpk7zh3n9yt

I am not really the person who asks and wait for signs but I needed it today. Regarding dun sa resignation ko, kinausap ako ng OD namin last Wednesday kung decided na ba ako and he offered me so much reasons to stay. To be honest, napa second thought ako. Then sabi ko, hindi na talaga dahil 85% sure na ako. The remaining 15% is just because of my friends at work and syempre the routine I’ve had na nahihirapan pa din ako i-let go. This morning, nakausap ko yung GM namin, she asked me my plans and if I have demands they might consider basta wag lang ako umalis. I opened up to her and told her my struggles, gumaan yung loob ko and again, naging marupok na naman ang ate Sandra. Naging 50/50 na naman ako kaya bigla akong nag ask ng something that could confirm kung ano ba talaga ang mas mahalaga sa akin. Freedom or assurance? Sobrang torn ako between freedom and assurance dahil kailangan ko yun pareho. Pero tonight, as we discussed kung ano na yung plans for our operations dahil badly affected yung mga employees ng volcanic eruption ng Taal and sobrang gulo na, walang plan B and hindi pa alam kung ano ang final decision, dun ko nasabi sa sarili ko na “ayoko na, ayoko na ng ganito” this is not really different sa typhoon na hindi makapasok yung mga tao. This should have been resolved long ago. Pagod na ako sa mga ganitong scenarios. I’d rather struggle for something new, hindi yung ganito na paulit ulit na lang yung reasons ko. I made my decision already, just now. I’m tired of everything, ako na yung kailangan mag adjust. I’m choosing a new life, what’s meant for me will happen soon.

Summer is here, typhoons as well, humidity levels are off the roof and we’re already covering the mats with rivers of sweat with simple warming-up exercices. We have aircon at only one of the dojo where I practice. Simple fans in another one, and nothing at all in the last one. It’s a bit... tough. Give me winter every day.
Tumblr media
And then people wonder why I wait until December to test. Strategy, folks! I want to be able to train properly without losing 99% of my energy by simply sweating.
Anyway, I had fun last night doing our traditional final sitting technique (kokyu ho suwari waza). Our GM is always grinning like mad when I’m partnering up with beefy guys. I’m happy to say my technique has improved a lot and with the right amount of push/power they submit quickly enough.
Yesterday my partner was a real solid and heavy blackbelt, so our GM called me out, and mimicked a punch to the chin to get rid of him. I was like “errr ok, is this even... ‘legal’? in the ‘book’?” and my GM just shrugged, “you do what you’ve got to do to get rid of him.”
OK then, smashing the chin from below it is! Sorry sempai.

Saoirse: the start of something - action item "I always love getting stories from adventurers. I really wish I could just, you know, have one of my own." I know that we can Be the spark when it all goes dark, cause We're finally breaking through I think it's cause I'm next to you
The Funeral: alabanza - in the heights "Everything has its time and you have to understand, she wouldn't want us to cry." I’d like to think she went out in peace With pieces of bread crumbs in her hand Abuela Claudia had simple pleasures She sang the praises of things we ignore
Perry: send me on my way - rusted root "I definitely have a lot of daggers happening, they're hiding in various spaces, 'cause that's what I do." Send me on my way I would like to reach out my hand I may see you, I may tell you to run You know what they say about the young
Vixthra's Lair: raging fire - phillip phillips "And all of a sudden, everything's on fire." Won't you turn my soul into a raging fire? You know time will give and time will take All the memories made will wash away Even though we've changed, I'm still here with you
Feywing: thunder (remix) - imagine dragons & k. flay "Names are part of who we are as people. I wanted my own but I don't have one anymore." I guess I had a spark inside I couldn't light when I was younger Oftentimes I think you really need to fight to find the hunger Lightning gets the shine but I've I've been working on the thunder
The Moon Card: illuminated - hurts "A beam of radiant light is bestowed upon her and she speaks a word." Suddenly my eyes are open, Everything comes into focus We are all illuminated, Lights are shining on our faces, blinding
The GM: bonus: rap god - eminem "Roll initiative, we're going to fight the gods." Look, I was gonna go easy on you and not to hurt your feelings But I'm only going to get this one chance Something's wrong, I can feel it Just a feeling I've got, like something's about to happen, but I don't know what

Girl don't be proud, it's OK you're in love
For context, this happens a handful of campaigns after this one: https://yourplayersaidwhat.tumblr.com/post/152436413587/its-too-clich%C3%A9-i-wont-say-im-in-love My character has met the love interest in question for several more times and there is some clear romantic tension in between them. But there are a lot of reasons that make the whole thing complicated for them both. Here’s how the ship finally sailed. In this campaign we’re investigating a political marriage involving the LI (he’s very unhappy about it) and after exchanging a lot of concerning information about the bride-to-be, talking about the good old days and very carefully trying to avoid talking about ~feelings~, my character is alone with her LI, struggling to keep quiet as to not make things even more awkward and difficult than they are)
GM: “As you walk across the stone wall, you see vines and dark purple flowers growing alongside it. [LI] picks one and holds it out to you” (in character) “In our society, these flowers symbolize fate and its guidance. I have spent most of my life fighting and somehow every time I knew I was about to fight my most important or fateful battle yet… You were there. You’ve always been there, right by my side, even now. It feels like I have had an angel watching over me.” Me(off-character): “….Yeah. I think I have to roll willpower here or things will get messy.” GM: “Sure.” *picks up his own dice* “He will counter with a charisma roll, though. Remember how drop-dead gorgeous he is?”
I prepare to drown in a typhoon’s worth of delicious drama as I roll. And fail.
Me: “…Fuck it. [My character] stares at the flower for two seconds, then grabs [LI] by the collar and shoves him against the wall, kissing him chaotically.”
Cue whistling and cheering from the rest of the players.
Me: “You landed a critical hit in my weak point: battle couples.”
Oh, and the wedding? Yeah, the bride turned out to be a demon so my character killed her at the altar. Felt pretty good about it.
