So, I definitely get the subjective impression that goods are "worse quality" today than they used to be. Clothes seem flimsier, household items are more likely to be made of cheap materials like plastic instead of metal or wood, etc. You can chalk this up at least in part to survivor bias, but to some degree that explanation feels like a just-so story. In particular, even when I see depictions of the world of, say, 70 years ago (e.g. images, films, etc), the average quality of clothing and household items looks higher. What explains this?
I have a few ideas about possible explanations, but I'm not sure if any of them are right:
1) There is a bias in terms of which goods were immortalized in pictures, on film, etc. People were more likely to depict goods of high quality.
I think this is probably a little bit true, but insufficient. After all, movies today depict plenty of cheap plastic crap.
2) More efficient cost minimization at each price point. Poor quality goods are on average cheaper to make, so the market will minimize the quality of the goods that are sold at each price point (I think this wouldn't be a thing in a perfectly frictionless market, but we don't live in a perfectly frictionless market). Greater technology has meant greater ability to do this, so it's more true now than it was a century ago.
3) More efficient price optimization over all. In the old days, a thingy had to be made out of metal or it wasn't gonna be made at all, because metal was the only fit-for-purpose material that existed. Today, it can be made of metal or plastic. The plastic ones cost less, so everybody buys the plastic ones and you don't see metal ones anymore.
The upshot of this last point is that people own more stuff, but it's on average worse quality.
4) Planned obsolescence?
I don't know, anything else?
I think I'd put my money on (3) as the main explanatory factor, although it seems like maybe it doesn't really work to explain changes in clothing quality.

My observations of Northwest China illustrate the way that contemporary colonial projects tend toward the “operational enclosure,” which describes a digitally-mediated social hierarchy in which the movement and behaviour of certain racialized populations are made automatically detectable and thus controllable, while privileged settler populations are permitted to move around in a relatively frictionless way—for instance, doors are opened automatically for them by security workers who profile them, or by camera systems that identify them as non-Muslim. Coined by communications scholars Mark Andrejevic and Zala Volcic, this form of enclosure is being adapted by government agencies and corporations across the Global South to slot marginalized populations into the operative logics of actionable intelligence. For privileged settlers, a seamless digitally integrated society brings them pride in the advancement of their country’s capabilities along with consumer convenience. For Muslims, on the other hand, the operational enclosure provokes intense fear. 
In Northwest China, advanced dataveillance technology is key in producing an efficient settler colonial state that can classify and segment its inhabitants. Two interrelated phenomena are at play here, one regarding the technology itself and the other about how it molds social reality. First, the technology is a black box—security workers do not really understand how it works beyond the reductive readouts they see on their screen: 99.11 percent match. Orange tag. Potentially “untrustworthy.” 
Second, in practice these simplistic characterizations and predictions come to be seen as truth. The technology is viewed as an unquestioned authoritative good, since it is perceived as scientific and state-of-the-art intelligence. The predictions made become legally enforced truths.  
Together, these two elements, the digital black box and the legal and social discourse of technological intelligence, are producing one of the first mass experiments in the colonial operational enclosure.

While many of us are treading carefully to avoid a slip in the frosty weather, scientists led by the University of Leicester have been investigating how to make surfaces even slippier! They have solved a conundrum in the principles of superlubricity -- a state in which two surfaces experience little to almost vanishing friction when sliding across one another. They have published their conclusions in a paper for the journal Physical Review Letters. Superlubricity is associated with molecular smooth surfaces such as graphene and has only been observed in the laboratory environment where these surfaces are synthesized at nano and micron scales. It looks very promising for technological applications where it could potentially reduce friction up to 1000 -- 10000 times, as compared to conventional friction in machines and mechanisms.

Hi, I'm lost, what's m34th?
ah its okay i dont think ive extensively talked about them(?) !! heres a lore post so i can refer back to it as well!! (lengthy bpp incoming) ->
general history:
the m34th was originally founded in the central kingdom as a group of witch hunters/killers as part of the general anti-magic mindset that was common in a lot of the regions following the fall of the witch king
after a while they figured out that killing a witch wasnt practical/efficient because 1) they were loosing a lot of people and 2) even if you kill a witch, it doesnt kill the magic, the familiar just goes and finds someone else to be the host and then you have to find that witch all over again
and they also realized that witches in general were not commonly evil or harming the public, but at the same time the kingdom still saw them as a threat and wanted to erase them from the public eye, so the m34th became a kind of regulating force
ie, they wont kill or harm a witch (unless as a last resort), but if a witch is being a bit too....public?? they will step in. (so this is the reason no one really knows about witches/excuses it as myth. also the reason why witches are forced to find backdoor ways to fulfill their oath of helping people instead of just coming out and curing cancer left and right--the m34th wont allow them to ever be public)
in very EXTREME stubborn situations, they will actually kill a witch if shes too much trouble and just hope the next [insert animal] witch is less of a pain in the ass
so not to say that witches fear them, but they do consider them enemies because 1) a witches life becomes much more restricted under the eyes of the m34th and 2) soilders of the m34th are ACTUALLY capable of killing a witch
general information:
the m34th is made entirely of black canvases (highest possible magic resistance), since the whole point of their existence is fighting witches and magic. (marshal is an exception--he is extremely talented and whatever he lacks like magic res he secretly makes up for in potions)
they also are meant to be magics bane in the sense that in tcwg theres a struggle between technology and magic--technology was created to fill the vacuum that magic left when witches became outcasts, and so its the idea that technology does what magic does (but often slower and less effectively, like healing)
the m34th though is like any government where they have ample funds and resources, and hide a lot of technology and secrets from the public. that being said, the kind of machines and tech the m34th uses is WAY beyond what the public sees/uses/comprehends.
(slaps on *ancient technology* meme because i cant explain it. think really cool technological shit. limes hovering comm device. they probably have frictionless hoverboard bullshit. set your phasers to stun. the kind of technology that could counter and stand up against magic)
they wear almost all white as representation of anti-magic (to contrast witches traditional black attire)
they are the third component to the main magical groups that are in constant conflict with each other: witches, m34th, coattails which represent magic/technology/dark magic respectively (dark magic is a wip but its the forbidden magic of tcwg) and they balance each other out like a healthy ecosystem
another way to think of the m34th is like the cryptic men in black. if you as a citizen see too much or know too much, expect a visit from these guys who are gonna flash the memory pen at you to keep you and everyone in the public ignorant
(for the final conflict against the first witch king the m34th and witches actually do join sides to fight so theyre best thought of as anti-hero types)

URBAN5 by Nicholas Negroponte (1967), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MA. The goal of URBAN5 is to “study the desirability and feasibility of conversing with a machine about an environmental design project." The design process is not algorithmic and demands a good deal of interactivity. A graphics system using a cathode-ray tube terminal and light-pen "provides a method of simulating the graphics of urban design, furnishes the necessary 'frictionless vacuum' environment in which to work, and provides a full range of basic design interrelationships." URBAN5 envisions the world as a set of ten-foot cubes and other physical elements like vehicles, trees, and people. Each cube, be it solid or empty, has characteristics including sunlight, acoustics, and access, affected by the cubes around it. The designer can create linguistic constraints such as, "The number of elements in shadow should not exceed 10", which URBAN5 checks for consistency. The designer can view the resulting wire-frame model from any perspective allowing them to move virtually through the urban environment. Auto renew the vicious loop
When it comes to removing friction, some companies have gotten extremely good at it. However, becoming good at it does not mean higher customer satisfaction. Think of all those amazing membership auto renew deals we have gotten sucked into. Yes, those are extremely frictionless, but they mostly benefit the company, not the customer. There is one examples particularly that comes to mind of a membership that sounds great but is extremely difficult to exit, leading to endless hours on customer service calls just to make the monthly draining of your account stop.
Occasionally, I treat myself to a pampering session and get a facial treatment done. On one of these experiences, I stumbled across Skin Spa New York. They are a skin care clinic with various locations in major cities in the US, which provide various treatments. After my treatment, as I was checking out, the receptionist informed me of their membership offering. In theory it sounds great, a discount on a monthly facial, sign me up! The benefits include a monthly facial (from a choice of five treatments), a free treatment on your birthday, various discounts on further purchases and even discounts for friends.
However, what they fail to inform you of, is the terms and how difficult these can be to keep up. Ultimately making it extremely difficult to end the membership. Membership fees are automatically billed on the 1st of each month, cancelable at any time they say, however, you must email them to request a cancelation before the 20th of each month, after 3 months of membership. Unused Membership treatment can be rolled over up to 60 days but no refunds or credit for unused months or lesser value service will be issued. The list goes on and on about policies you need to follow to be able to qualify for the promised services. This just shows how what is frictionless for the company is an actual added pain point for the customer. If you read some customer reviews, they discuss the difficulties for refund on services they were mischarged for. The automatic payment system does indeed remove friction for some parties but adds it for others.
What ends up happening is that once you opt into the membership it can be extremely hard to exit, creating that lobster trap scenario: easy in, hard out. This leads to the monthly payment and accumulation of credits that are never used. Finally, when one wants to cancel one is faced with the option of either canceling and losing all credits or trying to fit multiple treatments into one month. A process that seems frictionless for the customer is only frictionless when it comes to aspects that benefit the company. On the other hand, the aspects that the customers care about are riddled with friction; think back and forth emailing to cancel the membership, difficulty booking and rescheduling appointments. When we think of automation and erasing of friction, we must remember for whom we are removing that friction and for whom might we be creating a lot more friction.
The introduction of new technologies will only further increase this discrepancy if we are not attentive. We can all agree that the process of paying for a service is time consuming and can be seen as a pain point for both company and customer. But when introducing a technology to streamline that process, we must be very attentive as for who it is benefiting. We could also think of that pain point of a great opportunity to change the narrative. Why not make this a last impression touch point? Imagine instead of a simple paying transaction, you are given an infused water and a warm towel for your hands as you exit the establishment. Instead of simply trying to remove pain points, we must focus on the customer experience and look for ways to translate those pain points into memorable experiences.

Its global value chains stretch through physical infrastructure and “frictionless” financial flows at the speed allowed by fossil fuels; telecommunications;  and geophysical, technological, psychosocial, and bodily limits and “optimizations.” It connects economically and ecologically dispossessed agricultural communities in the Global South with regimes of hyperwork in the Global North; rare earth “sacrifice zones” with refugees; migrant labor with social reproduction; ocean acidification and atmospheric carbon with profitable opportunity. It has required the transformation of states; it has ripped through biomes and through flesh. Capital often appears and is treated as a historical abstraction; this is doubly true of globalized, financialized capital. The extractive circuit is the leaden reality of a global human ecological niche organized for maximal profitability—no matter how difficult or costly to maintain. Its realities underscore the generalization of a colonial social relation in socioecological terms, even as older modes of imperialism and neocolonialism are hardly swept aside. Its speed, frenzy, coercion, and brutality reach into the very heart of the imperial metropole, far beyond where such relations were already present. Feelings of exhaustion—depression, desperation, fatigue, exasperation—course through its wirings, neurons, biochemicals, and sinews. At every “node” along such a circuit, “inputs”—ecological, political, social, individual—are extracted and “exhausted.” The circuit, like capital, crosses boundaries without entirely obliterating them, and, similarly, connects a vast potential political subject across disparate lines—Global North and South, gender, class, race, nationality, religion, and sexuality. The extractive circuit is the socioecological portrait of capitalism historically and its transformations to maintain profitability in the face of immanent headwinds, like the long economic downturn and ecological limits themselves. Just as Marx once invited us to look behind the factory door—above which was inscribed “No admittance except on business”—to understand the way in which a nascent industrial capitalism was creating value, we need to “unbox” the extractive circuit, catalog its parts, and pry past a few bezels if we want to see Actually Existing Capitalism today.

I assume from what you've talked about before that smokescreens would be utilized in ship combat but i was wondering if they would hold any actual value in positional obfuscation in space or if they would be basically purely for defending against laser weaponry? What sort of means do you think make sense for spaceships to use to interfere with enemy ships' ability to line up shots? Asking especially for the larger scale ones. Or do you think it would end up being a waste of time to pursue that avenue of defense as when space-age armor plating and energy shields exist?
I might be wrong, but I think several factors (including, as one of the lesser obstacles, the beam of a capital-scale laser I expect to be too wide to actually be significantly and reliably attenuated or dispersed by a laser beam) keep any kind of diffractive particulate dispersion, or whatever you'd call a smokescreen, from being widespread. I could see some kind of sand-blast weaponry being used defensively, but probably more as a high-velocity "shotgun" for missile and fighter defense.
As for energy shields, hard to tell on account of there being no universal set of rules for how they'd "really" work, let alone any information on how energy-efficient they are compared to the weapons being fired at them, or how their properties would effect ship design and combat doctrine. As opposed to fusion torches and reactors, alcubierre-esque drives and other theoretical technologies considered possible today, shields, reactionless drives, tractor beams, most other forms of FTL and other exotic sci-fi tech on the scale of Star Trek/The Culture/etc really fall under the rules for a magic system and should be written by that philosophy more than anything.
That said barely related, in my second sci-fi setting, The Eissenschtadt Tribe (yeah, minor point, gonna start calling them tribes because they have no conscious connection to battletech Clans and are their opposites in many ways, so might as well make it less confusing) managing to make shields "deflect" attacks as if they were (hard, frictionless) solid surfaces is why they're as a rule roughly three times as effective, in capacity for protection, as peer-stare devices of similar mass and power-draw; most other known shield technology will stop an incoming projectile, for instance, dead in its tracks at the shield, no matter how oblique the angle of attack, and eat every Newton of energy that projectile was carrying. This has already started affecting Eissenschtadt combat doctrine (because they're back to things like facing and positioning really mattering) albeit most influential tribes have some technological innovation of this type that they jealously guard from even their closest nominal allies.
