Haha. Now what would make people change their mind and come back to this hollowed out place. [Note: I told someone what I've been doing and they called me awesome. And I realised I should have kept better track of the photos I took.]
Date: Probably 5-4 years ago. [Incorrect image info, 2007]
And to think in the last winter I went here there was a snowman...

The Sign of Four: The Episode of the Barrel
Victorian literature loves its fainting women. Was this down to overly tight corsets, ill health or someone just deciding to be dramatic for the sake of it? Possibly all of the three.
The woman Mary works for is not called Cecil Forrester. The conventions of this time were that women took their husband's legal identity. They certainly took their nationality, losing their own.
Forty-three is rather a large number of dogs to have. The RSPCA (which was a thing in 1888) would get involved if they knew about this facility today. Back then too.
The "wiper" or viper in this case is almost certainly Vipera berus aka the adder. Males are normally silvery-grey, females copper or brown. However, you can sometimes see black adders. If you want to see baldrics, go watch some Morris dancers.
The adder gives birth to live young (up to twenty at a time) and can live for over ten years. They are the only venomous snake of the three British native species, but for most humans, like Watson, a bite will just cause pain and inflammation. Ireland doesn't have any snake species at all, as the Irish Sea was too wide for them to get across.
The RSPCA would not approve of dropping an adder on someone as it would harm the adder. The police would not approve either.
It is legal to own a pet snake in the UK - indeed there are quite a lot of them - but you need a licence for the venomous ones today. This includes adders and all the viper family.
European badgers are different to the American ones. They are far more social, dig the most complex burrows and can also make a range of noises. They are also nocturnal, and they do bite if provoked. It is today illegal to have a pet badger, disturb their setts or injure them. Unless the government authorises a cull due to bovine TB, a controversial policy. Sadly, they frequently end up as roadkill.
It is legal to keep stoats, although controversial. They can kill animals much larger than themselves, like rabbits or birds. It is legal to kill them as a result.
Slow worms are legless lizards, not snakes despite their appearance. They do not have fangs. You could keep one as a pet, but not buy or sell one.
Sugar is not toxic to dogs but can cause problems in substantial amounts.
The penal colony on the Andaman Islands can really be compared to Devil's Island in French Guiana and should better known in the UK. The British sent many political prisoners, to wit independence activists, there from the 1857 Rebellion onwards. Crossing over the sea threatened devout Hindus with the loss of caste and the possibility of reincarnation, something known as "Kala pani". Arrivals would be put on chain gangs. Conditions would be harsh, with torture, medical experimentation, disease, and cruelty from the guards causing thousands of deaths. You could also be executed for trying to escape. Hunger strikes were common and responded to with force-feeding.
The worst prison at this time was on Viper Island, which contained solitary cells, whipping stands and stocks.
In 1872, a former police officer called Sher Ali Afridi sent there for murder after his death sentence, claiming he was acting on the instructions of Allah, assassinated the Viceroy of India, the 6th Earl of Mayo, who was inspecting the place. He had also wanted to kill the Superintendent but did not manage to do so. He was hanged a month later on Viper Island, where the gallows building still stands.
Viper Island lost its importance following the construction of the Cellular Jail at Port Blair, finished in 1906. That was also a very nasty prison, but it is beyond the scope of this post.
"Mohammedan" was a term used for Muslim in the West at the time, implying erroneously that Muslims worship their Prophet. They certainly hold him in great reverence, but they do not worship him.
Guess people started drinking early in Victorian times; licencing hours would not be introduced until the First World War.
The Oval is an international cricket ground in Kennington, the other famous ground in London along with Lord's. It traditionally hosts the final Test of the English cricket season and after getting gas lighting in 1889, it would get a Tube station nearby originally called Kennington Oval the following year, when the initial stretch of the City & South London Railway opened. Today, just being Oval and on the Northern line, it has cricket-related decorations on some of the tiling.
The land the Oval is on is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, the large property portfolio belonging to the Duke of Cornwall, the title given to the eldest son of the British monarch; this currently being Prince William, who is also Prince of Wales, that title trumping it.
Coal-tar creosote has traditionally been used as a preservative to stop wood rotting when outdoors, something necessary in the wet British climate. It was also used in dentistry!
However, it was discovered to cause cancer. While still allowed for general use by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the EU banned its sale to and use by the regular public in 2003. The UK carried over this law after Brexit. Coal-tar creosote products can only be sold to certified professionals for specific uses, like farm fencing and railway sleepers. The public have to buy substitutes like Ronseal, whose famous advertising slogan declares "it does exactly what it says on the tin".

Ok,ok, soooo, just a little thought hear but, my mind was racing around intreaging AU senators to TOA and one piped up in my head.
What if, when Steve, Claire,Douxie,Jim and Toby ( I’m adding Toby because we need a best friends reunion and we were robbed of it. Anyways, whe they fall in the rift what is they got separated, for example Claire and Douxie end up being in the same place with the nights, Toby and Steve are rescued by Claire’s shadow portals in her panic but they end up being flung into a different part of the Forrest perhaps closer to a town or village outside Camelot’s walls but still in its borders, and Jim ends up somewhere entirely different, and wakes up both confused and alone.
I don’t know why, but I thought this was an interesting concept to think about, in a searies point of view rather then just ten eps. For example Claire and Douxie end up descovering the flaws in camalot, the truth behind morgana and just how hatted magic is among Camelot’s people, whilst also finding a way to exit camalot without screwing up the time line and find there friends. Toby and Steve team up and problem solve ways in which they can find the others, learning more about the past, and the perspective outside just camalot, on trolls, and humans alike, the good the bad, and ugly, it even could be that those two run into blinky this time.
And then there’s Jim, ok so I may have made this one a little more dark then it should but bare with me. Jim at first wakes up in the woods, alone, I wanted to explore this because of his time in the dark lands and how he would cope alone again. I changed the shard aspect, rather then it in his amulet, it’s in his shoulder, which is worse because in this AU, the orders shard acts like a poison, slowly working its way to his soal befor corrupting it, but rather then just under Arthur’s control, it slowly takes away his sentience, and with his conection to the amulet, the corruption shows as his armor and body starting to form into one large beast.(I’m sorry, I would never want this for Jim) it would be interesting how he would cope, battling his wild and human instincts, blacking out, and learning things about the gum gums this time, that he had never realised befor. Perhaps leaning more about hedge wizards, trollhunters lor, because I also when’re with in this time daya is not the first trollhunter, only because it makes more scence in construct of time. I am still keeping big distance Cal with Jim , because that’s gold, but this time she through Jim’s predicament builds her strength in helping the future trollhunter in reuniting with the others, both coming to terms with how they are perceived by others as ‘ calamity’ and ‘beast’ on the way. This would explore a versify of different sides of the past, even encountering creatures that are mother troll or human, or anything we’ve scene in cannon, the un scrntiamt creatures.
Also yes they will all end up convening together and having one big happy reunion befor the storm, learning the information about the order they needed, and returning home, but with both good and bad news.
Plus’s this whole past adventure, would take place over the horse of several months, lots more time to uncover the caos and find out how to get home.
Anyways I may wright this but before I do, would anyone be interested in reading something like this that dives more into the past of camalot in and around the castle, some canon elements still standing, I’d appreciate some thoughts, and suggestions to things that may make it more interesting.

Transiting Sun enters Aquarius
Saturday, January 20 - Monday, February 19, 2024
Aquarius the Water Bearer*:
The sign of the Reformer
Air (mental and social - communicative, detached, abstract, changeable)
Yang (levity - outgoing, expressive, logical, left-brained)
Fixed (stabilizing security - concentrating, consolidating, focused, persevering, stubborn)
Transpersonal (universal - focused on ideals and abstractions)
“I’m different”
Rulers - Saturn (traditional), Uranus (modern); exalted - Mercury
Color: palest yellow
*(Gleaned almost completely from the book Astrology for Yourself by Bloch and George; the color is my own theory/belief.)
Issues of personal integrity and of being faithful to our own uniqueness are on the agenda during Aquarius Season 2024. One question in particular may be: how do we remain true to ourselves and be in a relationship? It’s complicated and difficult enough to “be ourselves” without factoring in a partner’s attitudes and opinions.
But, that’s on the agenda this month. It’s a great time to break free of the shackles of others’ expectations - to examine ourselves to see if we’ve internalized someone else’s message - and to refocus ourselves on what are purely our own standards.
Give the following aspects a day or so on either side:
Friday, January 26 - Sun/Aquarius square Jupiter/Taurus, 6°49’. We may not feel very comfortable with/about ourselves. If our partners/BFFs are nagging and critical, wanting us to live up to their expectations - that makes everything worse. Be careful not to mistake someone else’s dream for your own (to paraphrase Steven Forrest).
Monday, February 5 - Sun/Aquarius sextile Chiron/Aries, 16°10’. A chance to mend fences - if the other person lets us. We can self-heal too - we do have the right to be our unique individual selves.
Wednesday, February 7 - Thursday, February 8:
Sun/Aquarius sextile North Node/Aries, trine South Node/Libra, 18°51’
Sun/Aquarius square Uranus/Taurus, 19°09’
The urge to be independent individuals is very strong, and we can feel that it’s the right thing to do - even if a partner or BFF isn’t very happy about it. Watch out for (Steven again) “ostentatious idiosynchrasy masquerading as individuality” and the partners/BFFs may not be so critical.
Saturday, February 10 - Sun/Aquarius trine Vesta/Gemini, 21°46’. Excellent for personal identity and integration. We communicate effectively and can think things through. Scholarship is favored.
Tuesday, February 13 - Sun/Aquarius sextile Eris/Aries, 24°14’. Opportunities to use Eris’ disruptive energy in a constructive way - breaking through any final constraints on our uniqueness.

Thoughts While Watching Gilmore Girls- Season 2, Episode 16, "There's The Rub", aka A Sheer Masterpiece of GilmoreDom, AKA Jess, Rory, And Paris Eat Together And All Is Right With The World-Part 3
Who's ready for more TTR? (PS: There is a link to all previous recaps including parts 1 and 2 of TTR in my pinned post, while I work on puting together a better master index. You can also search my Tumblr by specific episode name or season).
Tumblr media
Anyone ever look at unofficial GG merchandise on places like Redbubble and Etsy? There are a bunch of phrases that always end up on crap. Oy with the poodles already. I smell snow. Etc etc. "Vicious trollop" is a very common one as well. But nobody was putting "Why Did You Drop Out of Yale" on anything, so I had to create my own custom merch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The banter between Emily and Lorelai is so sharp and witty and wonderful in this episode, it reminds me why am I still watching this show in the first place and subjecting myself to the additional torture of analyzing every episode minute by minute (for the second time in 3 years), even though it so often greatly disappoints me or angers me. There are just some episodes where AmyShermanPalladino's light shines through and touches everything in her kingdom. None of these moments involve Dean Forrester.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Never have I ever been so excited to see these two little words. "Doorbell Rings." JESS JESS JESS JESS JESS JESS JESS JESS JESS JESS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I tell you I literally squealed when she opened the door. If Gilly Girls was taking place in the 2020's, Jess would be a DoorDasher. I would have him deliver to the Forresters and spit in Dean's food. This is all too pure. My heart's a flutter. I can't snark on it. SaltyGilmores™ has been disabled. Look, I can't just regurgiate every single line and frame from this scene so I'll just post a select few things. Enjoy and #AdmireTheDeliveryBaby
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can we talk about the way she's looking at him? 😍 R: How come Cesar didn't deliver this? J: I volunteered. R: Why? J: I wanted to get out of the construction zone. Mmm, sure. I love when he does this shit:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He doesn't exactly sound surprised that one of the Gilmores didn't tip him. I will never cease, desist or yield in making "Rory and Lorelai don't pay for their food" jokes.
Tumblr media
Should I instead make jokes about how this is the second time in a row that the Gilmores actually did try to pay him and he refused?
Tumblr media
The last time we saw this shirt, he had a name patch over his titty. I really like this shirt and how we can see his scandalous bare forearms for once. Dear Baby Jesus, Milo is adorable. And the light on him is just perfect in this shot.
Tumblr media
R: You're staying? J: Didn't you just invite me? R: No... J: You told me I could have all the food I wanted. That sounded Invitation-Like. R: You want to stay here and eat? J: Beats being at Luke's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You will not be going anywhere, young lady. You sit right down at that table and have a literary debate with Jess and Rory, eat some fries, and don't get up until Dean Forrester barges in and ruins everything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jess Mariano's social anxiety is so palpable you could eat it. It is radiating from his pores with the intensity of a hundred suns. This anxious little nugget, who did not make even a second of eye contact upon meeting a new person, has the entire town of Schitt's Hollow quaking in fear of what atrocities he may be capable of. Oooh what have we here? A MINOR INCONSEQUENTIAL PLOT HOLE!

To be continued.

A Daring Prefect (Amit Thakkar x Reader) - Part Two
Summary: Amit and Reader are in an established relationship. Together they venture into the Forbidden Forest because they are on a mission. Danger awaits, a Centaur shares his wisdom, and a relationship is put to the test as it is confronted with double standards.
This story can be read as a continuation of the headcanons with Amit I wrote. Read the first part, please, if you haven't already.
This is probably the last part of the story.
Reader's gender, house, and appearance are not specified.
A/N: Hello everyone! Please enjoy! Also, I have received a request for a Twilight fanfiction that I am working on. It will take some time, however, until I post it. I just wanted to say that I did not forget about the request. I want to mention again, though, that I don't feel comfortable about writing sexual stuff about characters that are minors. For anyone interested, the requests are still open!
“Are you sure this is safe?” whispered Amit, following you along a winding and dark path in the Forbidden Forest.
You looked over your shoulder, noticing his trembling form. “The Forbidden Forest is never safe.” Staring stubbornly ahead, you added indifferently, “Besides, there is no need for whispering. Whatever presides in the forest and wants to hear you will hear you regardless of the volume of your voice.”
“Wow. Now, you are being very reassuring.” Amit scoffed, crossing his arms.
“If it helps you,” you said matter-of-factly, “the best way to survive the Forest is to be realistic about its perils.”
“No. That does not help at all!” Amit rushed forward to catch up with you as a little spider glided past his feet and out of sight. Scared, he clung to the arm you held aloft to cast light with a simple Lumos. “So, where exactly are we going to meet Dorran?”
At his question, you perked up, your eyes locking on his face and gazing at him with a warmth only reserved for him. “Oh, we did not agree on a location to meet up. Dorran said he would find us as soon as we were inside the Forest. After all, he knows when extraneous forces enter.”
“Right,” Amit nodded. “Usually, the Centaurs don’t interfere with extraneous forces and keep to themselves.”
“Exactly.”
You and Amit passed a prodigious statue that depicted a wizened magician. His arms were stretched to his sides, and his robe, although carved from stone, looked like it would flutter in the breeze at any moment.
“Oh, look, the statue!” Amit pointed excitedly at the artistic stone construction. However, he was surprised by the grim glint in your eyes.
“I know.” Your words were pregnant with meaning, but you chose not to elaborate.
“Hey, what’s that look for?” Amit disentangled himself from you, stopped walking abruptly, and stemmed his hands on his hips. “It’s just a statue, or is it not?” Curiously, he walked over to the stone wizard.
“Amit, stop!” You tried to run towards him to grab his robe. Anything to stop him from his impending doom. But you tripped over a root and twisted your ankle, falling to the ground. “Shit!”
“Language.” Amit chided. His Ravenclaw brain was so occupied and enthralled with his observation that he hadn’t noticed your ungraceful fall. Instead, he continued walking steadily towards the statue. “I wonder who built it?” Amit brought his hand to his chin, his dark complexion glowing beautifully in the moonlight; even now, you were gushing over him. “And what for? No one would come to the Forbidden Forest voluntarily to appreciate this piece of architectural beauty.”
“Amit!” Hastily, you tried to get up from the ground. But your injured ankle betrayed you. As you made to rise, your foot could not hold your weight, and you tumbled down again, landing on your knees and holding yourself up with your hands. You should have never brought your dashing, innocent Ravenclaw boyfriend with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge to the perilous and unforgiving Forbidden Forrest.
When Amit raised his hand to touch the statue, it seemed to happen in slow motion. The unawareness on his face. The horror on yours. Right before his hand came into contact with the wizened stone wizard, an arrow shot past your line of vision. Moving skillfully and precisely, it flew towards Amit and cut through the empty space between his thumb and index finger of his raised hand.
Shocked, Amit screeched and pulled his hand back, looking aghast at the monument. At the place where the arrow should have hit its mark and be sticking out from the stone. However, it seemed to have disappeared in it. It was just gone.
“Great,” you mumbled, heaving yourself up with great effort. “Hopefully, all the Dark Wizards in the Arena won’t see nor be alarmed by the arrow.” Gratefully, you turned towards Dorran, who nodded at you as a way of greeting. He slung his bow over his shoulder and walked calmly towards Amit, who was holding his chest and breathing unevenly, his back still facing Dorran.
“Little man, you shall not interfere with danger you cannot begin to fathom.” Dorran halted and stared down at Amit, who slowly turned around.
Your Ravenclaw boyfriend looked like he was about to faint. His expression was crestfallen, and he tilted his head to look at you for help.
“Little man, do not let your curiosity mislead you.” Dorran continued. “Be glad the stars called me. They do not foresee your end yet. Don’t go too soon.”
“I’m trying,” Amit swallowed.
As Amit became aware of your distraught state, and how you limped towards him, his brain pieced together everything that had transpired in the past seconds. His fear dissolved. Reverently, he looked at Dorran. “So, you are Dorran. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” However, his greeting was only a formality to not appear rude. Immediately after these words had left his mouth, he sprinted towards you, slung your arm over his shoulder, and supported your weight. “I’m so sorry, Y/N. I am so sorry.”
“It’s alright, Amit.” You smiled, pressing a kiss to his cheek. “You couldn’t have foreseen my fall.”
“But I could have paid more attention.” Shamefully, he glanced at his feet. “So, what is the mystery behind this statue?"
“It is the secret entrance to the Dark Arts Arena,” you explained. “Trust me, you don’t want to go in there unprepared. All the Dark Wizards throw around the Unforgivables as if they were selling sweets at Honey Dukes.”
“So, you have been inside the Arena?” Panic-stricken he glanced at you. For the first time, Amit looked distrustfully at you. His morals were waging a war as he doubted you righteously so. “Did you use the Unforgivable Curses?”
You bit your lip and avoided his intense gaze. Expertly, you refused to answer his question directly. “We said no more lies, remember?”
Amit gasped. He was unsure of what to do. Surprisingly though, he held you tighter. However, he refused to meet your eyes. Doubt was feasting on his emotions, destroying his body and mind. Maybe he didn’t want a criminal to flee right after they have confessed to their crimes. “Then that makes you a Dark Wizard, too.”
You swallowed. Knowing very well that he was right.
Dorran intervened. “Your friend, little man, has no malice at heart. There is a difference between being a Dark Wizard with true intent and using the Curses to protect your loved ones.”
“It’s all the same to me.” Amit shook his head. “I love you, Y/N… but you have to mean the curses to cast them.”
“Thank you, Dorran,” you said sadly, “but Amit is right. Even if I meant to protect the people I love, I also meant to control, torture, and…”
“Kill,” Amit finished coldly, looking anywhere but at you.
You sighed heavily, your chest heaving up and down. “Yes, kill my enemies. Seeking comfort in a double standard would be ridiculous.”
“I see,” Dorran began in his usual sonorous voice, “but you Wizards and Witches are a paradoxical society. That is what allows your kind to strive. I do not mean to say that I agree with your ways. But don’t you think it is paradoxical that it is considered appropriate to use certain spells and jinxes to hurt others? To use them for battle and label other spells as unforgivable? At any rate, using any kind of magic to hurt is unforgivable. You sully the true purpose of magic.”
“I see where you are coming from,” Amit nodded thoughtfully, a dark shadow clouding his features. “But the three Unforgivable Curses are categorized as such because they are immediate in their effects. There is barely any recuperation for the victims. Last of all with the Killing Curse. Physical and psychological damage will follow the victims for the rest of their lives.”
“I see we have reached an impasse. Maybe we should discuss this matter at another time.” Dorran looked at the tree crowns above him. They rustled quietly and forebodingly, sending shivers down your and Amit’s spines. “The Forrest is getting restless. Danger abounds. Awaits the careless. Here, my friends.” From the leather pouch around his waist, Dorran extricated the healing herbs that Pippins had requested from you. “I believe you came for this. Why don’t we see whether they really work? My little magician,” he turned to you, handing you one leaf. “Put this on your ankle and test the theory of that potion maker.”
“Thank you.” You took the leaf and sat on the ground. Amit helped you. He placed a hand on your lower back as you pulled off your shoe and sock to let the healing herb rest on the bare skin of your ankle.
“If the leaf heals your injury without having to squeeze out its juices, then this herb is truly powerful. Imagine what it could do if used as an ingredient for a potion.” Amit said quietly, brushing hair back from your face.
Soon enough, a green light enveloped your ankle, and you felt the pain subside.
After you had put on your sock and shoe again, you and Amit thanked Dorran. You waved and headed back to the castle, hearing Dorran’s voice ringing through the Forrest after his body was long gone from sight.
“That is the true purpose of magic. To nurture life. Not to destroy.”
Needless to say, you and Amit were left with a lot of stuff on your minds. You were not only thinking about the double standards of the magical community, but also about what would become of your relationship. Could Amit still trust you? Would he turn you in? And if not, could you trust that he would definitely not do it? What if he changed his mind?

I WENT BACK AND READ ALL DA LAZY DAYS INFO STUFF AND WAS IMMEDIATELY CURIOUS BCUZ I SAW DOR-15... is goob in da lazy days au? if so what is he all up and about doing....... whats his schtick if u will.
and also while im here u mentioned helen in da lazy four info stuffs!1!1! dis makes me curious but along with goob, can we learn more about everyone else in da parrs, hamadas, maybe even the forresters (pennys fam)?
sorry for asking so many lazy days/lazy four questions in specific all da time.,.,.. 😓😓 i love ur other au's too but lazy days is the one im most fascinated with so its like "grgrgrgr i MUST EAT. ALL DA CONTENT."
Let's tackle the Dor-15 and Goob situation first! Dor-15 is a series of multiple little robots Cornelius made. They're the little maids! But they can also protect the family with their built in weapons. Don't worry, these weapons are non-lethal as per country laws. Think bb guns and sticky traps!
Michael (Goob) is a restaurant owner. He works mainly within the realm of kid's entertainment. In the OG canon, it's pretty much confirmed he's a brony... so, in Lazy Days, he owns a restaurant that's pony themed. It has a carousel, an ice cream bar, a playhouse... pretty much everything a kid could want from a cool restaurant!
The Parrs! Bob - Works under Cornelius' company. Bob owns his own construction company, which Neil's company often commissions. Helen - A silk ribbon dancer. Think along the likes of the performers for Cirque de Soleil. When she's not on tour, she's teaching classes! Dash - Aspires to be a runner in the olympics, but currently he's the track and field champion in his school district. Jack-Jack - The baby. He's a bit too young to have any notable traits yet!
The Hamadas! Aunt Cass - Runs the bakery. Honestly, besides an outfit change, I didn't alter much from her personality. I like Aunt Cass. Tadashi - He's going to school for engineering. Shh... don't tell him, but Neil is gonna offer him an internship at his company soon!
Unfortunately I don't know much about Bolt, so I'm not gonna do the Forresters here... not yet, anyway. If I find the time to refresh myself of Bolt, I'll make a post about it!
Also, don't worry about it! I like answering these questions!

Excerpt from this story from Inside Climate News:
Mark Forrest had a choice: Save his political career or continue to support a solar power project that he saw as an economic bonanza for his Ohio county.
He chose the latter.
“I’m a stubborn bastard,” he said, on a recent drive near his farm.
He was the only person on the three-member Madison County Board of Commissioners to support the Oak Run Solar Project. The 800-megawatt solar array would be the largest in Ohio and one of the largest in the country, built on farmland owned by a company connected to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.
Now, Forrest is about to be a former commissioner. After 16 years in office, he lost in the March 19 Republican primary to a political newcomer whose campaign was largely about opposition to solar power.
Two days after the primary, state regulators approved construction of Oak Run, although the timing was just a coincidence. The Ohio Power Siting Board said one of the decisive factors was that local government leaders were divided on the project, which reduced the weight the panel gave to local opposition. Forrest’s willingness to dissent, even if it led to public scorn and electoral defeat, made a difference.
To an outside observer, it may make little sense that a state board responsible for deciding if a project is in the public interest would put so much weight on the views of individual local elected officials. But this is Ohio, where renewable energy developers have watched the legislative and regulatory process get tied in knots by local opposition to wind and solar.
Until the approval of Oak Run in March, the Power Siting Board had spent about two years rejecting just about every project that had substantial local government opposition. Oak Run was different, and the lawyers and advocates who closely observe these cases are trying to figure out why. Part of the answer is Forrest’s refusal to bend, but that’s not all of it.
Oak Run is huge by almost any measure. The project would cover 6,050 acres, about nine square miles. In addition to solar panels, it would have a battery storage system with capacity of 300 megawatts.
The developer, Savion, is based in Kansas City and owned by the oil giant Shell. The fact that Savion is owned by an oil company complicates the simple narrative that a clean energy economy must compete with a dirty energy economy. In many cases, the companies developing renewable energy projects are part of companies that get some or even most of their income from fossil fuels.
Savion, which declined to comment, convinced the board that the benefits of the project outweighed any local concerns. The advantages include a plan to work with Ohio State University to make the project a research site for “agrivoltaics,” the process of using the same land for solar and agriculture. And Savion was savvy in making its case, which included letters of support from several prominent Republicans in the legislature.

So Goldie’s been living rent-free in my head for a while.
Tumblr media
Personally I blame the movie Forrest Gump. I got on this kick of watching first-time reactions to Forrest Gump on YouTube (and by the way, did you know you can tell a lot about a person’s heart by their first reaction to Jenny?). Some of the comments on those videos were very inciteful, too.
Anyway, I’ve noticed some similarities between Jenny and Goldie’s behavior and now I’ve constructed this whole tragic backstory for her that I don’t wanna go into too much detail about here since this is supposed to be a safe blog as relatively trigger-free as possible (speaking of, I think I’ll put a seizure trigger warning on this because of one of the gifs), but anyway I’m pretty convinced Goldie was abused as a child, which would explain...
1. Her fear of vulnerability
Tumblr media
(Sorry, this gif doesn’t have subtitles.) There are times when Goldie starts to let her guard down with Scrooge, just a little, and then she immediately puts her walls back up. Moonstoneflowers brought this up to Frank a few years ago.
Tumblr media
2. Her preference to be in the lead
Tumblr media
Goldie grew up in a time when men were in charge of everything. If a man close to her had abused that power, of course she’d be uncomfortable letting a man lead anything, even dances, and she’d prefer a brand of chivalry that let her be in control.
3. Her avoidance of domestic life
Tumblr media
Settling down would mean entrusting her life to a man. Divorce laws were stricter way back when, and women often relied on their husbands for financial security. The idea of being financially dependent and legally bound to someone for life who could wind up mistreating her the way someone else had would be terrifying to her.
4. Leaving before she can be left
Tumblr media
Someone made a comment on YouTube about Jenny and how staying in one place for too long would force her to ruminate on her traumatic past, so she was always running from it. I can see this applying to Goldie. She also probably feels like she’s not good enough for Scrooge, and would rather leave before he can reject her and that door gets closed forever. I can also imagine her leaving asap so she doesn’t get caught, but more on her con artist side in a minute.
5. Betraying before she can be betrayed
Tumblr media
Sometimes it feels easier for victims of abuse to keep people at a distance, and as much as Goldie seems to crave closeness, it also scares the crud out of her. Betraying isn’t only a means of financial gain to her, but a way of keeping people who start to care about her from following her, and a way to prevent being hurt again.
6. Occasional violent tendencies
Tumblr media
Sometimes victims of abuse try to regain a sense of lost power by being abusive to others. Other times, it’s just because that was the behavior that was modelled for them and they don’t know what healthy love is supposed to look like.
7. Becoming a con artist
Tumblr media
Single women didn’t have a ton of money-making opportunities in the Victorian era, and certainly very few that would appeal to her. I imagine she’d have run away from home at a young age, and had to start stealing to survive. She probably performed in saloons at some point (since she did in the old comics and I think that’d be a neat nod, like her performance in “The Outlaw Scrooge McDuck!”), but she’d have grown uneasy as drunken men would’ve catcalled her or tried to grab her. Frustrated that even earning an honest living left her vulnerable to sleazy men, she’d go into scamming and prospecting full-time.
And then she’d meet Scrooge.
Tumblr media
(^Favorite Scroldie screencap EVER)
I could go on and on about what likely drew them to each other... you know, besides being stuck in an iceberg and forced to stare at each other for five years... but I think what it came down to is they wanted the same thing at the time: gold. Neither of them felt any pressure to settle down from the other.
Now, Scrooge has more or less “settled down.” He still adventures, but he’s got a family that depends on him who mean more to him than anything. As for Goldie, I think after “The Forbidden Fountain of the Foreverglades!” she’s realized Scrooge is more important to her than anything else she’s been after.
Tumblr media
It seems like after this episode, they were “back on,” so to speak, but in a long-distance relationship. That’s probably what’s most comfortable to her right now. But it was nice seeing her get to the point when she realized what she wanted was a fresh start and to be with Scrooge. I think that was a big step for her.
