Toy story 4 was the worst entry in the series by far, which i guess wasn't too difficult bc the first 3 films had already been great- and that is very very rare that all films in a 3 part series are good and not unnecessary. Its a shame TS4 came along and broke the trend. They should have ended it with 3 where it felt it ended, that was the natural end to the story

It is completely contradictory to woody's previous (and complete) character arc. Woody in this film completely reverts back to his previous state of being a shithead who's jealous of other people getting attention. The previous 3 films were about woody getting past his fear of abandonment and accepting that things change and life goes on. IMMEDIATELY the film opens on woody hating the fact Bonnie gave the Sherrifs badge to another toy and left him in the cupboard. Like ok, sure, maybe woody would still be a little jealous of not being played with, but not the way he behaves about it. if they wanted to address these themes again they would have been so much better making Jessie the focus of the movie since her issues with abandonment are so much worse and so much fresher.

Buzz Lightyear, though he had been gradually dumbed down and was never very intelligent- suddenly has no brains whatsoever. He's not much more than a joke now. Haha Buzz doesn't know what thoughts are isn't that funny. Yea he was a joke in TS3 too im not going to pretend he wasn't, but he and woody's friendship was still a key element in there. In TS4 he does..... Nothing.

Don't even get me started on Bo. Bo hasn't been present since TS2 and even in TS1 her role was absolute minimal. Her purpose really served as nothing but a jealousy pivot plot device in the development of Woody and Buzz' friendship. In TS4 they changed her entirely. She's not the same character anymore. We get it, you wanted a badass heroine in there for the Rep but [gestures to Jessie again] you really missed this. This movie could have had SO MUCH POTENTIAL if you had just REMEMBERED JESSIE IS THERE. We did not need Bo Peep and her weird "lets give woody a girlfriend" plot. Something something she helped woody find the next part of his life- except for the fact the ENTIRITY of this story is unnecessary.

The very focus of this whole saga is how best friends should stick together no-matter what. You've got a friend in me. Too bad that's out the window. Woody is fine leaving the gang to go and wander with Bo- contradicting the entire message of the previous films.

I get what they were trying to go for with forky, but given the context of the film compared to its predecessors its just totally lost. It's really overshadowed by what the hell else is going on- to the point i barely rmember what that plot was about. What was the point of Forky. It was a good premise and opened up all the mysteries of what qualifies as a toy and like how they're made and such and that even the simple things are important to a child but. He doesn't seem to serve as much more than a plot device either- because how the fuck are they gonna make a 4th movie in a finished franchise. In the end thats what forky feels like.

They bigged TS4 up for having very heavy themes never before addressed in an animated film for children and stuff in it and for being heartbreaking- but it did not meet those expectations in the slightest. I bawled my eyes out at TS3. My DAD cried at TS3. But TS4 didn't deliver at all. Those heavy themes they talked about? With the introduction of forky I expected it to be something about identity or something. That potential was there. But.... no it was organ donation. I'm not saying that's not a big thing, but overall it had so fucking little impact at all. They are toys. And in the end it would have no impact on woody anyway, because Bonnie would never find out, because HE FUCKING LEAVES THE GROUP. If you wanted to address organ donation SURELY you should have had him give up a part of himself and STILL be welcomed back lovingly among his friends who would support his decision. Surely Bonnie would be sad that her toy suddenly stopped working, but she would love him anyway. But she never knows because Woody becomes "lost". Bonnie is about 3-4 years old right? She absolutely has object permeance and when she discovered her cowboy is missing she will be so sad. She has other toys, but not that one. Do you people not remember TS3.

Tbh i do not even remember this movie that well. I saw it once in cinemas and was so incredibly disappointed I have never watched it again. So my points may be a little off bc ofc this is just my understanding of this film. But it annoys me so much to the point praise for it makes me want to hit people. They could have done so much better. It was an unneccssary sequel. they would have been better using similar story for a completely unrelated (preferably new) franchise instead of capitalising badly on characters who are already whole and loved. Animation is a hell industry under capitalism and TS4 ended up feeling more like a graphics showcase than a heart filled movie. I could probably go on but jesus christ i. sorry

I...am in two minds about Toy Story 4.

On the one hand, I grew up with Toy Story. I grew up with Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Andy and the gang. I have that nostalgia from having my own Woody/Jessie/Buzz/Bullseye (my Woody was given to me by my late nan when I was little, which is why I have an even more emotional connection to the series).

There were bits of Toy Story 4 I liked - it kept up the overall tone of the other movies, it was humorous, it was enjoyable. The animation was beautiful too. I did love it when I watched it and I want to watch it again at least once more.

But the more I think about it, the more I start to feel conflicted because there’s stuff that ruined it for me. It feels like Pixar abandoned the messages from the other films - the messages about friendship, for example. Woody basically left the gang and did a total personality heel turn to (as someone so adequately described it) “tap some porcelain ass”. Perhaps that wording is a bit strong but the fact is that Woody basically had a midlife crisis and abandoned his lifelong friends to be with his girlfriend.

And I’m not hating on Bo Peep - while I wasn’t a fan of Bo in the original film when I was little, I grew to appreciate her more as I got older. And I liked Bo in this one too. But Pixar could have easily had Woody realize that his friends need him, he’s their leader, and it doesn’t matter if he’s playing second fiddle to a spork.

Toy Story 4 seemed to take elements from the other three films and do a shit on them, to be honest.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen Woody being passed over for a new toy - in the first film, he gets jealous because Andy suddenly seems to prefer Buzz. But Woody didn’t leave because of that - he realized that he wanted to be there for Andy, regardless of whether he was the number one toy. He just wanted to be there for Andy. Yet in TS4, it’s like “Woody feels abandoned so he fucks off lmao” - like where is the Woody who would fight to be there for his kid??

Bonnie isn’t Andy, granted, but Woody’s character throughout all the films has always been very strongly in the “the most important thing for a toy is being there for a kid”. In Toy Story 2, Buzz even reminds him “a toy once told me life was only worth living if you were being loved by a kid” - and that’s why Woody ultimately decides that he wants to return to Andy. Even when Andy no longer plays with them, Woody still remains there to watch Andy grow up. I know he doesn’t have that same attachment to Bonnie, but it’s just baffling that he did such a 180.

Speaking of character assassinations...first of all, Buzz was made to be so dumb. Yeah, the inner voice gag was funny but they made Buzz out to be some absolute moron who didn’t understand metaphors or whatever. Buzz isn’t a moron.

Another character assassination? Bonnie. Look, I get that she’s five and she has her favourite toys and a short attention span, bleh bleh bleh. But given the fuss she made about having Woody in TS3, plus how much she loved him in the shorts released between 3 and 4, the fact that she didn’t care at ALL for Woody in the slightest made me mad. It’s not just “she’s not playing with him” - it’s the fact he went missing and she literally didn’t give two shits. If ANY of my toys had gone missing on a trip somewhere, 5 year old me would have been distraught as fuck. I get her attachment to Forky, that’s not what makes me mad, it was a problem even before she made Forky. They turned her from a sweet little girl who loves toys into a careless girl who didn’t care about a toy that was clearly loved and valued by their last owner. Remember how she looked like she was going to cry when Andy hesitated about giving Woody to her? Yeah, I don’t blame Andy - he knew Bonnie was bad news.

All of the other characters were just...there. Usually you get to see lots of the aliens, Jessie, Rex, Bullseye, Hamm etc., but in TS4 they were just there to fill background space and provide the odd line. Mr Potato Head is understandable since Don Rickles sadly passed away before recording any lines and they were using archive recordings. But the others? Jessie had maybe five lines in the entire film, and while she kicked ass in her own way, Pixar made her secondary to Bo. I get that Bo was a big focus in the film but...seriously? While I loved Ducky and Bunny, I’d have rather had more Jessie screentime than two brand new characters created solely for gag purposes. Jessie is beloved and important in the franchise - for her to be delegated a back seat is not only senseless, but it’s also OOC for her.

Woody really did have it worst when it came to character assassination - gone is the lovable cowboy doll who’s always there for their kid and for the gang...now we have Woody being hopelessly in love and whipped to the point where he abandons his lifelong friends because “LoL Bo Peep pretty”.

So overall, I don’t know how I feel about Toy Story 4 - I’m disappointed the more I think about it. Like I said, there were many good parts about the film, including the overall tone and the animation has come a long way, but the story wasn’t nearly as strong as the other 3 movies were - it’s like Pixar wanted to take Toy Story out from the shelf again just for a) money and b) to answer the Bo Peep question. Honestly, I didn’t need a whole movie to explain what happened to Bo Peep - hearing in TS3 that she was gone was enough for me. It allowed me my own idea of what could have happened to her, you know? If they had really wanted to show what happened to Bo, why not create a short like “Small Fry” or “Toy Story of Terror” to explain? Simple fact - again, it’s money. This movie just wasn’t strong enough to hold up the way the others have - in context with the first three, it’s an OOC mess.

Again, there were bits I liked and it’s not a bad movie really - it’s just that there was so much that was bafflingly OOC and stupid. The Woody in the first three films would NEVER have left his friends like he did in TS4, he would never have allowed himself to be a lost/free toy like he did just because he wanted to stay with Bo (who he hasn’t seen in over a decade, mind you - it’s unbelievable that he’s gonna stay with someone he hasn’t seen in over a decade instead of friends he’s been through thick, thin and death situations with).

Toy Story 4 thoughts

So after a month of this movie being out, I finally got around to seeing Toy Story 4 and boy, while most of the plot was not a surprise, I’m glad they still had those “gotcha” moments that I didn’t see coming. Anyway, with that in mind, here are my current thoughts.

- The main thing that stuck with me from the movie is how vital love is. I find it interesting that in some ways, Woody and Gabby are different sides of the same coin. They are both individuals who believe that giving love is their purpose but whose stories are driven by the fact that they feel unloved. And to me, that’s what makes the ending so interesting. Because here we have two characters with similar motivations who both realise that sometimes your happy ending isn’t what you think it is; Gabby doesn’t go home with Harmony and Woody doesn’t get to see Bonnie’s reaction to him bringing Forky home/continue to make her happy nor does he ever get to be her favourite toy or in charge again like he was with Andy. And yet, despite having such similar motivations, their endings are polar opposites. Gabby gets the love she wanted from another child, but Woody gets that love not from his child, but from Bo and most importantly, from himself/ For the first time in a long time, he chooses himself and his needs.

- On that note, I also find it interesting that this movie touched on toxic environments and the toys reactions to it. Now I want to point out that by toxic, I don’t necessarily mean abusive because technically none of the characters positions were, but it is very clear that Woody, Gabby and past Bo are/were severely unhappy in the positions they were in, and yet, much like how Gabby and Woody react differently to being unloved, the three of them act differently to their environments. First you have Woody, a veteran who has been doing what he was doing for so long that in some ways, he’s just given up and is going with the flow. Like we see on multiple occasions that Bonnie would be perfectly fine without him, but he still stays in this environment that is upsetting him and justifies it in the name of loyalty (as a side note, I wanted to fight him for implying Bo wasn’t loyal in that argument) while still being both resentful and nostalgic. Then we have Gabby, who, ironically enough, is the optimist and the dreamer. She knows things are going to be better one day, she even knows what she needs to do to get what she thinks is her happy ending.... but she doesn’t do it, at least not until Woody shows up. And then there’s Bo; the survivor, the one who got away, the one who acted. I will say that I think Bo’s journey encompassed all three steps, like it’s clear from the scene at the start that she started off very much like Woody and it wouldn’t surprise me if while in the antique shop, she had her dreamer stage like Gabby, but ultimately she realised that our choices are what impacts our lives and not the other way around. And that’s another reason that while I was mad at him over it, I found Woody’s comment to Bo both interesting because that’s what tends to happen in real life; people who aren’t ready for change somewhat resent or down talk those who have already changed, and I wish they had gone more into that past “That’s all I have left”. And finally, there’s Buzz. And you might think he’s a strange toy to put into this category, but he’s also an important reaction to toxic environments. He’s the outside view, the friend. He can see that Woody is unhappy and does what he can to remedy it, but as I’ve already said, our choices are what impacts life and Woody continuously chooses to reject help to get out of or reduce the impacts of his toxic situation, so nothing changes until the end when he finally allows Buzz to help him by believing Bonnie will be okay and that Buzz will take care of her and the others, letting Woody leave that environment.

- I do like that they made Bo someone who goes around to like parties and stuff and not just avoid kids like the trailers implied. It seems like a nice midpoint.

- One thing I wish this movie had focused on more is Woody’s somewhat inability to notice the love around him. It’s a topic that’s brought up a few times throughout the movie, mostly through his fight with Bo, him saying “[helping Bonnie be happy through other toys] is all I have” despite 90%+ of his friends living with him and Buzz saying “You left me behind” after Woody using no toy gets left behind as a reasoning to go back for Forky, but I feel like it’s ultimately brushed aside. As a connected point, I kind of feel like there was some missed opportunities not having Buzz express his feelings more, because through both his selflessness in terms of Woody this movie and him realising that he’s going to have to let his best friend go, maybe forever, it feels as if a lot was left unsaid.

- Likewise, I would have loved to have more moments with Bo and the other toys that weren’t Woody. Like don’t get me wrong, the Buzz/Bo and Jessie/Bo moments we got were great brotp moments, but I feel like those dynamics have been underutilised in the franchise and I would have loved to see more of them.

- I love the comparative points of this movie. Like how Woody was when he realised Forky was the favourite in comparison to the first movie when he realised Buzz was, Woody making Forky feel at home compared to Forky with the new girl (although the idea of him having a “girlfriend” character was a bit cringey, I won’t lie) and Bo lowkey pushing Woody to go with her at the start of the movie to her letting Woody realise on his own that they should go together at the end. I will say with that last one though, I wish Woody still would have been the favourite when making that comparison because him leaving an environment where his kid was very clearly distressed at his disappearance compared to his kid not even noticing he’s gone doesn’t really feel comparable.

- I gotta be real with you, Buzz gave off big “New partner to a person with kids from a previous relationship who just wants to help that person and be a good stepparent” vibes throughout this movie and his selflessness somewhat broke my heart given the ending. All up, he was probably my favourite character in the movie.

- I’m very conflicted on the ending. On one hand, Bo/Woody was my first ship as a kid so that mixed with the idea of Woody getting out of a toxic environment and just get to relax and be and focus on him makes me happy and I loved that my original guess of what would happen was wrong because it meant the movie surprised me, but at the same time, it feels strange that Woody’s happiness doesn’t involve the others after everything they’ve been through. I mean they’re probably going to make more movies where Woody and Bo end up where the others are here and there for adventures, but yeah, I’m still not sure how I feel about it.

- On that note, and as my final one, while I know we’re probably getting more movies, I kinda wish we’d get a tv series as opposed to the movies after this because I feel like that would work better. Like it could be focused on the times the carnival is in town and Bo and Woody visit the others and so on.

All up, this movie lived up to my expectations. While I am still conflicted on the ending and wish certain topics had been explored more, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would definitely recommend this movie to people of all ages.

Okay thoughts on Toy Story 4

I did not enjoy it, story wise. Visually it was great but none of the characters’ arcs felt completed or done properly, and it really did feel like it negated the ending of toy story 3.

It suffered HEAVILY from the past decade of Pixar’s biggest failings in that LITERALLY everything is exposition now and nothing is shown. Bo says she’s happy, Gabby says she’s sad, etc etc. You never feel like you experience what theyre going through

Forky’s arc gets wrapped up in act 1 so I can’t say much except he thinks he’s trash but then Woody tells him his life story and Forky sees being bonnie’s trash is okay.

Woody’s arc

He feels useless and obsolete cuz he’s not the top toy anymore, he’s insecure and hung up on Andy

he does stupid ass shit and most of the conflicts came from him trying to be selfless but it put him and everyone in danger

When he meets Bo, it’s explained he feels lost toys are the worst thing ever but it never feels grounded in his experiences

Forky’s relationship with Woody is mostly within a montage and then it gets glossed over in one night so none of the stakes feel high enough cuz it feels like Woody is only doing the things he does to feel useful to Bonnie not because he actually cares about Forky

Woody and Bo’s romantic and sexual-ish relationship gets downgraded to the friendzone and it’s heavily meetcute stuff rather than any real fleshing out oif her as a character. She’s just weathered and sassy and a broken bird but yeah.

Bo Peep’s character arc

When we get introduced to her again as this weathered, world weary soul, her character stagnates. It goes nowhere and she’s still the same person as she was in the beginning of act 2.

I wished her meeting Woody again would challenged her “All kids suck I belong to no one” schtick to go somewhere even if it was “Oh I thought I didn’t need anyone but having someone to be with after you fulfilled your purpose means something” but nah

I do wish the flashback sequence focused more on Bo Peep, or we were given more of a basis to her character beyond being Woody’s girlfriend to contrast to her current look. Like being afraid to break or to get damaged but instead there’s nothing.

Woody just,,,,, fuckin’ explaining Bo Peep’s backstory to her new friends was a bad writing choice. We just get told Bo is sentimental, we don’t see what that actual memory is, we don’t see any of it.

Buzz’s subplot:

he’s a fucking idiot and he’s comedy relief and the emotional farewell sucked cuz it wasn’t earnt.

Okay, so I just watched Toy Story 4 again with my girlfriend and my lil' bro.

And this time I had Bunny with me! I bought him instantly aftwr watching Toy Story 4 for the first time. I'm also getting Ducky (which I'm giving to my gf because then we have double gay couple energy-) and a Buzz plush, because Buzz has always been my fav and the most important character to me. He just means alot to me 💜

So, in short, Bunny is a great cuddle buddy and really comfortable to cry on. I hid my face on his head the whole time because I was teary-eyed the whole movie. But he's great and I can't wait to get the rest of the gang 💙 Guess Bunny and Ducky got their kid after all. It may be 18 years old, but I swear to all that is holy, I WILL love and hug them with all my heart and soul. Bunny is already always with me, because of my severe social-anxiety and he is so super soft and great to cuddle and distract myself. I always boop my nose with his nose because he actually makes me comfortable and happy. Also gave him one of my necklaces and bracelets so we can match and he'll always have something from me with him.

He's a good boy.

Also! I started to make my own little Forky! I had to actually cut up a plastic spoon because I couldn't find a spork to save my own life- The only part that's missing are his little feets and he's ready to go and be cuddled!!! Forky may be trash, but he is OUR trash and I will love him dearly with all my heart, thank you very much.

Toy Story 4

When Toy Story 3 came out, it was my favorite movie for a good while. It has died down over the years, but Toy Story is still one of those nostalgia-filled franchises for me. 

I was worried when 4 was announced that nothing could live up to this and....yeah. It was as good I think as it could be, but nothing stops the point that this movie shouldn’t really have been made. 

Main Character: Woody has always been a wonderfully flawed character working on his selfishness and own personal goals (to be loved). In this case, he is not as loved, and and so tries to get love through other toys (Forky) which is interesting. 

Side Characters: So they totally retconned Bo Peep, right? whatever, I’m good with it. A lot of the new characters were fine, but weren’t incredibly remarkable to me. Forky was pretty simple, but he was another kid, so, that was...that. Mostly my thoughts were: Is that Key and Peele? 

It was btw.

Other characters: Buzz had a small point in the plot, and Jessie even less. Like, they existed, but. meh? I think there were too many characters.

Plot: Woody isn’t loved like he was with Andy, and finds a toy who is (Forky) and convinces him to be a loving toy, while he takes off to the postapocalyptic world with his girlfriend. I mean, thats what happened, right?

Story: Gotta move on sometimes. Which isn’t a bad moral at all I just. Idk. 

Cinnamontography: The animation in this was BEAUTIFUL, like no joke, it was gorgeous on everyone. I don’t know what more I can say about it, other than growing up with pixar has been a helluva journey watching it adapt. 

Design: Damn those puppets were scary.

Other: I think a big problem here is that Toy Story 1-3 was a pretty clear narrative of a parent with a kid at different stages of their life, even though Andy wasn’t much in the story. This, though, felt just...tacked on. It really wasn’t a bad movie at all, with few real flaws, I just don’t have the connection I was hoping for.

Toy Story 4 (MILD SPOILERS)

Glory be, they didn’t fuck it up. I was among many who were skeptical about the prospect of another Toy Story installment after the 3rd one wrapped up things so beautifully (albeit with room for more charming shorts and TV specials) in 2010, and especially after the various spots of turmoil during its development, even by American theatrical animation standards. But to my surprise and delight, Toy Story 4 manages to be a worthy epilogue, quiet and lovely in many respects, if still very funny and rousing. It might not have a standout scene equal to 3′s heartbreaking incinerator moment, but it manages to forge its own identity all the same, and time may very well prove it to be a better installment overall (3 is still very good, but certain parts feel like retreads of 2 in retrospect).

The story this time around picks up with Bonnie, Woody and the gang’s new child, entering kindergarten and having fairly typical anxieties about that fact, especially since she can’t bring a comfort toy (it must be said: Pixar has gotten absurdly good at animating wretchedly adorable children). Woody, already feeling anxious about being passed over for play in recent times, stows away to act as emotional support, and his actions push Bonnie towards the actual creation of a new toy through a spork, googly eyes, pipe cleaner, and a popsicle stick: Forky (Tony Hale). Forky is deeply confused and upset about his new state of being, though the closest the film gets to answering the question of HOW this happened is brushed off with a joke, which might be for the best; the films have always been more about the emotional metaphor of what it means to be a toy t a child rather than literal fixations on them being “magic” in some way. Very Calvin and Hobbes in that sense, arguably. At any rate, Forky emotionally processes this all by repeatedly trying to fling himself into trash bins that Woody has to dig him out of. The cowboy is convinced that the new toy is going to bring Bonnie happiness and becomes fixated on ensuring that as his new purpose. These antics lead to the pair being separated from the group at a carnival on a road trip, and the goal becomes reuniting with Bonnie. This proves complicated when Bo Peep (Annie Potts), Woody’s old girlfriend and the former desk lamp toy of Andy’s sister Molly, re-enters the picture as a rugged survivalist that helps lost toys, and Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks), a lonely doll with a broken voice box in an antiques store, decides her best chance at happiness is Woody’s intact voice box.

Things develop in surprising if occasionally familiar ways from that point. The film as a whole is much quieter and low-key than expected, even compared to past entries in the franchise. There are frantic chases and goofy comedy moments, but quite a bit of time is given over to heartfelt musings about the nature of toys’ existence and what fulfillment means in their lives. The cast is radically pared down too, with the larger group of Andy and Bonnie’s toys mostly limited to exposition and comedy-from-afar scenes, while Woody, Buzz, Bo, and the new characters take up the majority of screentime. I found this to work; the other toys do have some good scenes (in particular, Kristen Schaal continues to make Trixie the Triceratops a scene-stealer), but the group’s become so large at this point that you sort of HAVE to pick a smaller area of focus. On the thematic end of things, it’s perhaps a little too easy to tell where things lead early on in some respects (from the start, Gabby is clearly not working at the same levels of manipulative villainy as Stinky Pete or Lotso), but the ultimate emotional conclusion goes to a very heartfelt place, and I did mist up a little.

Voice acting wise, the returning cast all fill their roles with aplomb, though in one instance, Mr. Potato Head barely has anything to observe since Don Rickles sadly died shortly before recording began, and ultimately archival/unused outtakes from previous films were used with his family’s permission, leading to him only sounding off briefly during some crowd scenes. I really think in particular Woody needs to be thought of as one of Tom Hanks’ signature characters far more than he is; Hanks has always put in some of his absolute career-best work as the fretting, occasionally jerkish, but decent and good to his core cowboy. The audible wear and tear on his voice compared to where we started in 1995 aids the feeling of encroaching uncertainty about his place in the world, and he and Tim Allen as Buzz play out what could be their last moments together with a real sense of history. Potts, an actress who forever feels underappreciated, completely reinvents Bo with a weary determination and cynicism that hides the ultimately hopeful soul within, though there’s hints of darker territory that I suspect earlier drafts might have explored more. Of the new characters, Hale is a perfect innocent, managing to make Forky likable rather than irritating in his wonderment yet also surprising insight into the strange new world around him. Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele reunite as Ducky and Bunny, plush carnival prize animals with a darkly funny fixation on attacking humans, while Hendricks really pulls her emotional weight as Gabby; how she reacts to a key development is one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve seen since Endgame crushed my soul into fine powder, and another reaction proves to be the film’s true cornerstone. Most unexpectedly, Keanu Reeves continues the Keanuissance by getting big laughs as a cocky-but-anxiety-riddled Canadian Evel Knievel parody. Even as a fan of him before it was cool, I had no idea he had something like this in his repertoire.

Animation-wise, it must first be noted that it’s incredible to compare the first film to this in terms of raw scale, tech, and rendering. Cutting edge has become the new normal, though I will note that both 1 and 2 hold up ultimately due to their scripts, voicework, and impeccable direction (artistry trumps tech, every time), which holds true here. Character animation is one of Pixar’s strongest suits now, and as ever, there’s fun to be had in how the various different types of toys move and interact with each other and their environments; a group of ventriloquist dummies, for example, prove nicely unsettling in their LACK of fluid movements. There’s also nice little bits of filmmaking inspiration throughout, like how an imagined plan is edited together for a huge laugh, various fade-in-and-outs in the opening “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” montage, or a tracking walk-and-talk shot of Woody and Forky as they get to know each other. The most striking improvements over the decades, however, have been in human and animal character acting, which verged on Uncanny Valley territory in earlier installments; Bonnie’s dad in particular gets some fantastic, hilarious body language, and a threatening cat is, well, cat-like without being overly cartoony. Musically, Randy Newman does his usually solid instrumental work, and it’s always a pick-me-up to hear “Friend” again, though the highlight proves to be a new song played over a black-comedy montage of Forky eagerly throwing himself away (titled, naturally, “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away”).

All told, I was quite pleasantly surprised by Toy Story 4′s consistency and thematic strength, especially considering my rather ambivalent feelings about last year’s Incredibles 2, which felt like a retread in the worst ways even with some spots of enjoyment. It’s perhaps a bad sign when I think Cars 3 has more interesting things to say, and that’s not exactly a Pixar franchise I hold near and dear to my heart. But this manages to mine new emotional territory for an ending that may, all told, prove to be quite a satisfying goodbye for the film series at least (you’re fooling yourself if you think they’re not gonna capitalize on this for spinoffs; Disney gonna Disney). Happy trails, partner.
