I love one thing in particular about Frankie Drake: not one damn person (at least thru s2 which is as far as I am) has said anything fatphobic about Flo.
Tumblr media
In fact not only that but so far nothing about the show has even commented about her weight. She’s a fully fledged character who has romances (more than Mary even), had a husband who died mysteriously in the war, dresses fashionably, and helps solve cases. Mary even crowded her in one ep out of her seat and not one damn comment was made.
I love her

Want Solid Feminist Media? Watch Frankie Drake Mysteries
Title character is independent, savvy, adventurous, somehow all without being a mary sue. And she sees a therapist (well a priest, but it's the 20s and entirely non-religious in nature).
Black female partner who gets just as much screen time and back story, is integral in solving the mysteries, and gives a look into black Canadian history we never hear about.
A morgue attendant who is unapologetically fat and always enjoying her suitors. She's also the funniest character and talks about her love of pathology in such a nerdy, realistic way.
A morality officer who is the young, excited one, and heavily autistic-coded. She loves structure and order and is very good at figuring things out in her own way. She loves baseball.
A female recurring antagonist who runs her business ruthlessly. Her gender is never a topic.
The Chinese community are frequently included as information resources or friends, with the heroines often shown enjoying Chinese food together.
None of this snarky, insulting each other for humor stuff. These women compliment each other constantly. It is. So refreshing.
Also the costumes are awesome, 1920s fashion is fun, what can I say
Just watch Frankie Drake Mysteries for some good Canadian feminist media, you won't regret it.

I was tagged by @1920s-obsessed - thank you!
Rules: Tag 9 people you’d like to get to know better. Top 3 Ships:  I’ll go with fiction ‘ships (relationships).   Inspector Alleyn and Agatha Troy from Inspector Alleyn Mysteries.  Mrs. McCarthy and Lady Felicia (just as pals, I practically want them to get their own spin-off series) from Father Brown Mysteries.  Mary Shaw and Flo Chakowitz (same, just as mystery solving pals) from Frankie Drake Mysteries.
Lipstick or Chapstick: Chapstick, but a tinted kind.
Last Movie: Sherlock Jr. on Jan 4th because I had to rewatch it after all the public domain hype :-)  The last non-Buster film was Babes in Toyland the Laurel and Hardy version on Christmas day.
Last Song: Flowers on the Wall by the Statler Brothers
Reading: Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett. I can’t think of 9 but I’ll tag  @nitrateglow @melancholyprince @bussielove and anyone who wants to have a go :-)

Currently on my watchlist is “Frankie Drake Mysteries.” Set in 1920s Toronto, the Canadian TV series follows the adventures of Frankie Drake (Lauren Lee Smith) and her partner Trudy Clarke (Chantel Riley) at Drake Private Detectives, the city’s only all-female detective agency, ably assisted in their investigations by Mary Shaw (Rebecca Liddiard), a morality officer on Toronto’s police force, and Flo Chakowitz (Sharron Matthews) a pathologist at the city morgue. As the team fight crime in the age of flyboys, gangsters, rum-runners, and speakeasies, they regularly rub shoulders with historical figures of the era, including Ernest Hemingway, Coco Chanel, and Agatha Christie.

Kew Media Distribution's "Frankie Drake Mysteries" Acquired by Ovation in U.S. as New Second Season Launches
KEW MEDIA DISTRIBUTION'S "FRANKIE DRAKE MYSTERIES" ACQUIRED BY OVATION IN U.S. AS NEW SECOND SEASON LAUNCHES
London, [11 October 2018] - Critically acclaimed detective drama Frankie Drake Mysteries continues to enthrall viewers worldwide as Ovation, America's only arts network, signs U.S. broadcast rights to two seasons (21 x 60'). Ovation joins a host of international broadcasters that have signed the brand new second season - which debuts at MIPCOM 2018 as part of leading global distributor Kew Media Distribution's new drama slate.
Set in 1920s Toronto, following the city's only female private detectives as they take on the cases the police don't want to touch, Frankie Drake Mysteries is a CBC Original series developed and produced by Shaftesbury in association with CBC and UKTV.
Season one of Frankie Drake Mysteries will premiere to U.S. audiences on Ovation in June 2019. In addition to the new two-season deal with Ovation, the new ten-part second season has been renewed in a pan territory deal with Viasat for Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Globosat in Brazil, Sky in New Zealand, and Dazzler in UK (Home Video and DTO). In Europe, the new series has also been acquired for Finland by YLE.
In both Canada (CBC) and the UK (Alibi), the first series of Frankie Drake Mysteries was the second most watched drama across its broadcast season for each channel, increasing Alibi's slot average by 210%. Frankie Drake Mysteries stars Lauren Lee Smith (The Shape of Water) and Chantel Riley (Wynonna Earp) as the Drake Private Detectives, who take on cases exploring a cross-section of 1920s Toronto, with the help of morality officer Mary Shaw (Rebecca Liddiard, Alias Grace) and morgue attendant Flo Chakowitz (Sharron Matthews, Mean Girls). In this time of change, their gender is their biggest advantage as they defy expectations and rebel against convention. They are new detectives for a new world - but is the world ready for them?
"Frankie Drake Mysteries is the embodiment of artfully told and executed storytelling," said Scott Woodward, EVP of Programming, Ovation. "From the brilliant costume and set design to the jazz-infused soundtrack, this series' artistic elements enhance the good fun of this engaging mystery series."
Jonathan Ford, EVP of Sales at Kew Media Distribution, commented, "We're incredibly pleased with the global success of Frankie Drake Mysteries and are delighted to welcome Ovation as the latest broadcaster to secure this stylish drama.. Evoking the thrilling atmosphere of an era that saw real revolution, Frankie Drake Mysteries focuses on themes that are as relevant today as they were then. Alongside its fantastic critical acclaim and overwhelmingly positive response on social media, ratings statistics prove that the first series offers broad audience appeal - and we're confident that the new season will continue to be in strong demand."
"We're excited for American audiences to meet the phenomenal women of Frankie Drake Mysteries. They are a force to be reckoned with, as a team and as individuals, as they solve cases across 1920s Toronto. We are thrilled to share these dynamic characters and their stories with the world," said Christina Jennings, Executive Producer, Frankie Drake Mysteries / Chairman & CEO, Shaftesbury.
Kew Media Distribution will showcase the new season of Frankie Drake Mysteries at MIPCOM alongside a strong slate of premium drama. This includes the brand new 90' event drama Care (LA Productions for BBC One), from Emmy(R) and BAFTA award-winning writer Jimmy McGovern (The Street, Broken), which stars Sheridan Smith (Cilla) as a single mother struggling to raise her two children in the aftermath of a family tragedy. The new fifth season of the award-winning, critically acclaimed thriller Line of Duty (6 x one hour) from World Productions will make its debut, alongside the brand new instalment in the Bletchley Circle franchise - The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco (8 x one hour, An Omnifilm Entertainment production in association with BritBox LLC and World Productions).
Further MIPCOM launches include Clink, a new ten-part drama from LA Productions set in the fictional women's prison HMP Bridewell, and The Dead Lands, an eight-part action adventure drama from GFC Films based on the globally successful international film set in pre-European Polynesia. Finally, new mini-series Cold Call (4 x one hour, a Chalkboard production) tells the story of June, who, after falling victim to a cold call that destroys her family's future, sets out to take her revenge.

Boy, you are living in a bubble! This goes on all the time, and we just don't want to talk about it. Like Frankie said, look, it's humiliating.
Flo Chakowitz (Sharron Matthews), confessing to Mary (Rebecca Liddiard) she was once assaulted in Out On A Limb [S03E07].
This Frankie Drake Mysteries was particularly poignant, and also very important; and that scene, especially.
