Reinier Zonneveld talks Church of Clubmusic, Filth on Acid, live improvisation and what sets him apart.
The exceeding gifted Dutch musician, DJ and producer kick-starts a busy tour season in support of his third and most notable album to date “Church of Clubmusic,” is scheduled to perform live, playing only his music except for some remixes at Thuishaven — Amsterdam. Followed by a two-day appearance at next month’s, Drumcode Festival in his hometown. Before embarking on the “Filth on Acid” label worldwide tour, Reinier will host his label’s showcase at ADE, where he will play live for 12 hours.
Hello Reinier! Thank you for making some time to speak to us!
For our readers who aren’t familiar with your music, can you tell us a little bit about your path to becoming an artist?
I started playing piano when I was 3. I’ve been basically listening and playing around with music my whole life. When I was around 10 years, I got my hands on a copy of Reason 1, and in the beginning of course had no idea how it worked. But with playing around with the functions which I really liked, I began to make some recordings. This was all just on the side as a hobby, but when I went to my first real techno party when I moved out of my parents house, I was 16 or just 17, I knew that that was what I wanted to do. The very next day I started working on it, and since then I’ve been producing and playing techno (and sometimes other electronic music styles to keep it diverse). I used to play a lot of illegal raves all around the Netherlands, and from time to time official gigs at clubs and festivals. By 2011 I did my first release, and in 2015 my music got played by a lot of the biggest names in the scene; Carl Cox, Adam Beyer, Richie Hawtin, etc. In 2016 I released a record “Rushchamber” which included “Sharp Bust” on Oliver Koletzki’s Stil vor Talent. Suddenly I made the step from sporadious gigs to touring full time, and I’ve been touring ever since.
Some of your work marries your classical background with detailed elements. How much experimentation does it take to create that balance…or do you just manage to do it instinctively?
I think this came as a result of playing (and writing) classical music, these influences will always come out one way or another. To get it right is another thing, I spend a lot of time trying things and also thinking about how you can combine melodies on the foreground with something that also bangs on a dance floor.
You recently released your third album “Church of Clubmusic.” What’s different this time? How has your process changed, if at all?
My first album, Reverse Psychology was very much focused around hypnotic / experimental techno and ambient. My second album Megacity Servant was build around melodic techno with some tech house influences. For my third album “Church of Clubmusic” I really wanted to showcase a more diverse album, that takes the listener on a trip and showcases the many electronic styles I love to produce. Something very suited for home listening, while also having tracks on it that work good in clubs and festivals. I included reworks of tracks that I made over 10 years ago, but also fresh cuts from half a year old.
On the most notable track on Church of Clubmusic…
I think that ‘Hard Gaan’ is definitely the highlight. It once started as a live improvisation in a dark club in Berlin, somewhere in the morning at the end of 2016. I suddenly turned the BPM up to 145 during my set, put an extreme distortion on the kick drum, and played the sequence of the track from a synthesizer. People started asking me at every show if I would do the crazy thing they heard or saw online from that night. And it happened that every show I did a completely live variation of just that. The track evolved and every version was different. Then at Awakenings festival in 2017 I closed the set with it, and it completely blew up the crowd (this video went viral online and is seen by tens of millions of people now) and decided to give it a name: ‘Hard Gaan’ — which means literally going hard.
On how Filth on Acid started…
Together with my very good friend Axel (who is now also my manager), we were always talking about how we would like to start a label. We got the idea for the name from a track we did together back in 2014 (Reinier Zonneveld & Axan — Filth on Acid). Axel focuses mostly on the backside of the label, but we always discuss all the ideas and plans we have together. The A&R I always do by myself alone, I like to have full control over the music we release. We knew one thing for sure: no compromises on quality, put in maximum effort and try to get people and other artists involved into the sound I was doing. No compromises for us for example means that all our cover art is hand drawn by a dedicated artist, for every single release. In the beginning this approach was a bit stressful, since a label only costs money until you stream / sell a lot of music, and especially so if you want to everything the best as we could. We invested all our savings in it. Then we’re super happy to see immediately from the first release on super good support from artists and the audience on what we were doing, and I could invite some of my favorite artists to do a release together or solo, with as the big highlight the collaborations with Carl Cox; last year Inferno and this year a 3 track EP in June that is released on 28 June.
Can you name some notable artists on your radar right now? What draws you to their work?
I really love what Mees Salomé is doing. For me he is one of the producers in the electronic scene with the best feeling for melody; the perfect balance between emotion and danceable music. The music can really grab you, while at the same time exploding a dance floor at a club and festival.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Your music is usually a melting pot of genres, do you have a vision for the final product when you start, or do you discover it during the process?
Usually I start a track when I already have an idea in my head. This could be a melody, a sound, a rhythm. Whenever I get an idea like that I record it on my phone (imagine me singing a techno track in a full airplane at 8AM) or better; I take out my laptop or quickly go to my studio to start sketching out the main ideas of the track. This doesn’t have to be techno, if I get a nice idea for a hip-hop track or an ambient piece I would do the same.
What did you learn while making ‘Church of Clubmusic?’
I really learned to think more about track order and storytelling with a lot of tracks combined. Instead of just putting the most popular tracks on top (which is often done with regular club EPs), for an album you really have to think about the path a listener takes through your music.
Arguably, there are a lot of producers in the scene. Your work, however, always stands out to me. How do you feel you’ve been able to create a unique “sound” and style with your body of work over the years? What sets “Reinier Zonneveld” apart?
Thank you! In the past I used to hear from a lot of people that I should focus on fitting my music into a certain sound of a label. I tried to do this, but it killed my creativity. At some point I started to let this idea go, and that’s when for me a whole new world opened. I just make whatever I feel like and I’m way happier with the music I make now because of it. By working this way you really open up the way for getting the sound that is inside your mind out in your recordings. Next to that I think the fact that I play only live, touring a very big amount of gigs every year, means that I have always feedback from the crowd on all the techno tracks I make. Some of them I might play 1 or 2 times to be just used for some obscure loop in my sets later on, some I feel really work and these get adjusted by remembering how I change during my live sets and implementing that for the final release. Finally, I think an important aspect in my sound is that I do everything on my own: writing the track, producing, sound design, mixing and mastering, so you very much hear exactly how I want my techno tracks to sound, without the influence of for example an external mastering engineer.

On his favorite space at home…
In front of my speakers in the living room.
On essential tools in the studio…
Good monitoring and room acoustics.
To cap off our interview, what does the rest of the year have in store for you?
There are so many good things coming, which I’m really happy and thankful for. My touring schedule is very, very busy and I’ll bring my music all around the world for the rest of the year. Some highlights for me are definitely being a resident for Awakenings, Cercle on the 1st of July in Kiev, and also my own Filth on Acid parties. On the FOA parties, I play all day or all night long live. I bring out a lot of machines from my studio, like the classic Roland gear: TR909, TB303, TR606, SH101, the Moog Sub37, and some boutique synthesizers and drum computers. I will play only music by me (with the occasional remix I did of course), showing the full spectrum of my sound. At Thuishaven Amsterdam I’ll play 10 hours all day long, and at Amsterdam Dance Event I’ll do 12 hours all night and morning. We’ll bring these shows after the success of Filth on Acid Berlin also to the rest of the world (more cities to be announced soon).
There you have it folks. Electronic music’s modern day Mozart is on a field of his own. Don’t take my word for it, go see for yourself — catch the cerebral sensation live.

Alohaaaaaaaaa \m/
Guess what?
Hawai’i, I’m coming home!
Not for good, but just for a visit.
After being in Madagascar for over two years in the Peace Corps, I will finally be heading home to see my family, friends, and beloved Islands.  Buraaahhhh I cannot wait!
Since I will be going home soon, I should brush up on my local kine talk ah? I not talking full on pidgin, but small manini kine Hawaiian style lingo here and there yeah.
So if you are reading this and aren’t from Hawai’i then I apologize in advance for some of the references and words that I may use.
They say you should never write how you talk, but dis mah blog and I can do whateva I like!
You might understand what I’m saying, but it will probably just be a little weird to read.  But seriously, people in Hawai’i actually speak like this.  So if you are really curious and have no idea what I am talking about then just ask—I’d be happy to educate you.
So kala mai my haole braddahs and sistahs. Cheeeehuuuu!
Fo those who no know, I was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawai’i.  I basically lived there my whole life.  Da longest I been away from da islands was when I studied abroad in Spain fo three months; I tink living in Madagascar fo two years without leaving small kine beats dat.  Eva since den, it was hard fo me to stay in one place foa too long after catchin’ some mean cracks by one incurable case of da travel bug. Dat buggah!
I tried lots a tingz to get rid of it, like being busy with school and work, not looking at plane tickets, and even being broke—nothin’ wen work! I just kept getting on that plane and flying away somehow.  To Argentina fo one nahda study abroad, Washington to visit one friend, Colorado twice, one fo snowboard and once fo da X Games, den finally Utah to camp in Moab before leaving to Madagascar with da Peace Corps.  I swear it wen feel like my feet was off the ground every ahda month after my diagnosis.
So staying in one place and not even boarding one plane fo over two years is small kine weird fo me ah.  Honestly, I small kine nervous fo board one plane overseas again aftah so long.  But nerves and excitement stay one in the same so I get choken excitement more than anything.  How can I not be yeah?
How many Peace Corps Volunteers get to take their home leave in Hawai’i? Saying I am lucky would be one undastatement.
No matter where I go in this world, Hawai’i is just always the most beautiful place in my eyes.
I have been to a few places around da world and it is hard fo compare to Hawai’i.  There’s just something special about coming home, like feeling dat cherreh warm ocean breeze as soon as you ha’alele the sliding doors of da airport. Nothin’ is sweetah than home, I’m pretty sure there might be one popular saying about sweet homes but who actually knows.
It’s gonna be nuts to see all these people I never seen in person for over two years, but what will be even mo nuts is them seeing me with long hair and facial hair for da first time! I neva had long hair or facial hair in my life, and even tho dey seen picthas of me online and thru Facetime calling, it’s still gonna be pretty trippy fo dem to see me like dis.  I don’t think people will recognize me at first.  Ho dis gon’ be fun.
Clean cut, short-haired Kamaka in 2016
Hairy, long-haired Kamaka in 2018
Still throwing up the Shaka cheeheee!
I’m so curious to see what wen change. What’s new in Hilo? Kids still go to Tilt at Prince Kuhio Plaza or wat? Hawai’i get Chipotle yet? Guy Hagi memes still a ting? I like watch the Hawaiian language version of Moana, where dat stay? Get one hurricane or volcano erupting again dat I should know about? SO many things I like know yeah…
I guess I will find out soon enough tho.
Yah so I not one those sentimentol losahs dat like to count down the days to a big event in their life, so I not gon’ do dat.
48 days *cough cough*
Brah I’d neva do dat, shut up!
So anyway if you survived thru dis blog post tanks ah! Also, if you stay in Hawai’i in December, let’s cruise, catch up, talk stories, grind some poke bowls/acai bowls then kanak attack on the beach!
I neva taught I’d be away fo dis long, but I knew I would be back eventually cuz no matter where I go and what I do, I am always coming back home to you, Hawai’i.
I no can help it.  See u soon den!

Survivor has featured many controversial players throughout the years, and few are as controversial as Russell Hantz. Fan opinion remains firmly divided on the quality of Russell's character and gameplay. Some find him a strategic mastermind who all-but changed the game forever and unjustly lost his respective seasons (at least Samoa). Others view him as a brash and egotistical player who suffered a God complex and rightfully deserved his losses owing to horrible social gameplay and poor jury management.
RELATED: 5 Times Boston Rob Was A Fan Favorite On Survivor (& 5 He Went Too Far)
However, there is a balance and some degree of nuance to be found. Russell inhabits both good and bad traits, and both must be acknowledged.
10 Supported: Finding Hidden Immunity Idols
Tumblr media
If there's one thing even Russell's most ardent critics can admit, it's that he was spectacular at finding hidden immunity idols. Samoa aired at a time when hidden immunity idols were still found through the use clues, but Russell said "forget that" and sought out the idols without any hints or guidance.
He ended up finding a handful of hidden immunity idols himself, effectively changing how these idols were found and utilized in the future. Russell was so good at finding idols that he still holds the record for possessing the most hidden idols in Survivor history, with six idols across three American seasons.
9 Didn't Support: His Jury Management
Tumblr media
And if there's one thing that even Russell's most ardent supporters can admit, it's that Russell is quite poor at jury management. If jury management wasn't such an integral aspect of the game, then Russell would have handily won both Samoa and Heroes vs. Villains.
As it is, Russell was perceived as having a superiority complex, and the jury didn't take kindly to his persistent backstabbing and cocky attitude, resulting in back-to-back losses.
8 Supported: Pagonging Galu
Tumblr media
Russell is often regarded as one of Survivor's strongest strategic players, and that is evident by his complete Pagonging of Galu. Galu went into the merge with a huge number advantage, having won eight of ten challenges.
Following the merge, seven Galu members were systematically and consecutively eliminated in a unique Pagonging, with most of the eliminations being the result of Russell's manipulations. Love or hate him, it was a masterful performance.
7 Didn't Support: Lying About Being A Katrina Victim
Tumblr media
Controversial Survivor gameplay is one thing, but Russell sunk to a personal low after lying to his fellow tribemates about being a Katrina victim.
RELATED: Survivor - 5 Ways The Game Has Changed Since Season 1 (& 5 It's The Same)
In order to garner sympathy, Russell told his fellow members of Foa Foa that he was a victim of Hurricane Katrina and that his dog Rocky died in the tragedy. He was quick to clarify for the camera, stating, "It's crazy how you can break their hearts by telling them a lie."
6 Supported: Stealing J.T.'s Idol
Tumblr media
Hero J.T. Thomas was the victim of one of Survivor's most memorable, and memorably stupid, idol plays. Believing that Parvati was the Villains' mastermind and that the Villain men were being systematically eliminated, J.T. gave his hidden immunity idol to Russell, telling him to use it at the next tribal council and vote Parvati out.
Unbeknownst to him, Parvati and Russell were actually working together, and J.T. was later eliminated with his own hidden immunity idol.
5 Didn't Support: Laughing At J.T. With Parvati
Tumblr media
This is a perfect example of why Russell Hantz doesn't win Survivor. A more gracious and humble player may have accepted J.T.'s hidden immunity idol and used it against him in a great, albeit non-personal, move. However, Russell Hantz is not gracious or humble.
After accepting the idol from J.T., Russell and Parvati sat on the beach and laughed at the letter that J.T. had written Russell, making fun of the language used and personally insulting J.T. for his supposed stupidity.
4 Supported: Tricking Tyson
Tumblr media
Heroes vs. Villains contained some fantastic gameplay, including the deception of Tyson at the hands of Russell. The plan was easy - the heroes were going to split their votes against Russell and Parvati, ensuring that at least one of them would go home.
However, Russell became aware of the plan and tricked Tyson into voting for Parvati. At tribal council, Russell gave his hidden idol to Parvati, and Tyson was eliminated in a 3-2-0 vote (with Russell, Parvati, and Danielle voting against Tyson).
3 Didn't Support: Confronting Rupert
Tumblr media
Heroes vs. Villains culminated in a vicious fight between Russell and Rupert. The fight got surprisingly personal, with Rupert calling Russell "a disgusting, terrible human being".
In return, Russell told Rupert that he was there to "make [his] life Hell" and proceeded to sarcastically call him "the great, powerful Rupert. The second coming of Christ". To end the fight for good, Russell called Rupert a "dumbass". The crude name-calling crossed a certain line - even if it was Rupert who instigated the fight.
2 Supported: Winning Individual Immunity
Tumblr media
No one would call Russell Hantz a challenge beast, but he certainly held his own. Russell had a fantastic penchant for winning individual immunity when it truly counted. In Samoa, Russell won the Over-Extended challenge against Mick, Natalie, and Brett, ensuring his place in the final tribal council.
He did the exact same thing in Heroes vs. Villains, barely winning the Blind Maze challenge against Parvati and Jerri, once against ensuring his place in the finals.
1 Didn't Support: Thinking Himself The Best
Tumblr media
Russell is nothing if not egotistical. In both Samoa and Heroes vs. Villains, Russell rubbed the jury the wrong way by declaring himself a Survivor mastermind and openly criticizing the other players for falling for his ruses. A humble personality is a huge must for Survivor winners, as they must balance strategic prowess and betrayal with friendliness and humility.
Russell didn't do that. Instead, he openly declared himself the best player, leaving all sort of humbleness at the door and irritating the jury to the point of failure.

First, a fun announcement: I found out last night that I am back in the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts this summer! I'm very excited to be a part of the 2018 season this summer, which will be my 6th as an exhibitor, and the FOA's 86th year in operation! So, here's a little sneak peek at how the painting is going on the first dragon bust cast. I'm using glazing liquid to lower the opacity of my paint so that there is still light getting to the translucent resin underneath. It's different than the way I usually work, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit! More soon. #dragon #resincasting #polyurethane #creaturedesign #fantasticalbeast #beardeddragon #tusks #celvinyl #horns
