Here’s how sunglasses are often polarized:
Tumblr media
Or maybe it’s horizontal. IDK. Anyway, the point is, this isn’t good. It stands a good chance of blocking out the visibility of your phone/laptop/whatever. Sometimes a coffee shop or the like will have a menu on a big monitor (or series of big monitors), and you won’t be able to see it if your sunglasses are polarized orthogonally to the monitor. Sure, you can take your sunglasses off, or tilt your head, but it’s still a flaw.
There are various workarounds, but I think a simple approach that would would be to change the polarization to this:
Tumblr media
Now the polarizations are orthogonal, so no angle will totally block both eyes completely (although it might be a little weird only being able to see a screen with one eye).
I see no reason that this would increase manufacturing costs at all, other than switching costs if you’re going from one approach to the other.
Plus if sunglasses manufacturers standardized enough on a single common orthogonal angle set, then we could use them as 3D glasses if we wanted!
Do good / new sunglasses already do this, and it’s just the cheap, somewhat old ones I have that don’t? (Some SolarShield wrap-around sunglasses that can fit over glasses.) Are there disadvantages to this that I’m not anticipating?

I've bought glasses from eyebuydirect.com and been pretty happy with them; others have recommended zennioptical.com, but I refuse to buy from them because they had a non-disparagement clause in their TOS when I read it.
someone else recommended eyebuydirect too, so i might go with that then

Have an eye appointment today and replacing my glasses. I'm getting silver geometric and round frames. I'm buying the frames from eyebuydirect.com so hopefully their good quality and won't break the minute I get them. I'll show pics later!

Anyone with glasses, if it happens to apply I feel like I thought I'd mention. My general strategy to cover vision costs when you don't have vision insurance:
1. Go to an eyedoctor in an eye store and see if they have free appointments for people who buy glasses there. If so, get an appointment and ask for a paper with your prescription or write it down. Then don't pick out glasses that day or consider but don't buy. Worst case if they make you purchase you may have to buy one expensive store cost glasses. You may want to see if purchasing glasses same day is required ahead of time.
2. Go to an eye doctor who's in an eyeglasses store who's first visit is maybe 20-60 dollars. The store will assume you're buying from them, but it's not required. You get your prescription from the doctor from that one time cost. Then leave without buying glasses.
Now go to zennioptical.com or eyebuydirect.com. I went to zennioptical first because they explain measuring your own pupilary distance and frame sizes etc. Then go in and pick from your choice of 9 dollar to 35 dollar frames, with add ons to your lenses if you desire blue light filter etc. The end cost even if you get a lot of extras is usually 60-80 Mac, and if you just get base glasses usually 20-30. Whereas in glasses stores I was looking at 410 dollars for glasses back when I had vision insurance.

For glasses wearing people who need prisms, transitions, etc…
Unless your insurance magically covers most of your lenses and frames, you are aware that glasses are ridiculously expensive, especially with prisms and even more so with transitions.
Insert companies like EyeBuy Direct (using their prices as a reference because I get my glasses from them). They cut out all the middlemen by having the experts themselves to make the glasses for you and directly send them to you.
I got two pairs this weekend during their Memorial Day sale (they constantly have sales). I got one pair of single lens distance for astigmatism glasses with prisms and transitions with decent frames and a pair of the digital screen glasses with a decent frame with free shipping for $152 together.
My first pair at a regular eye doctor normally costs $400-500 by themselves.
The only reason it was over $100 was due to the transition lenses that I need. I tried the cheaper photochromatic lenses. They don’t work for me.
