Spencer Reid x Original Character x Aaron Hotchner
in which jason gideon's daughter joins the fbi as the newest youngest member
Chapter Three:
The precinct doors swung open, admitting the BAU team into a world where the air was heavy with the scent of stale coffee and the buzz of fluorescent lights. The local officers, scattered like leaves, paused mid-motion their gazes drawn at the badged newcomers. Among them, the chief stood out, his shoulders bearing the slump of defeat.
Evelyn stepped through the threshold, her arrival stirring the calm atmosphere as subtly as a breeze disturbs a tranquil pond. The male officers couldn't help but glance up from their desks, their conversations trailing off as they took in her confident stride and bright energy she carried like a torch. She was oblivious to the subtle shifts in posture, the stolen glances that followed her path to the map.
Hotchner's gaze, sharp and discerning, caught the brief interplay of looks, a silent conversation in the language of glances. Beside him, Reid's observation was more analytical, noting the dynamics without judgment, his mind already cataloging and discarding the information as irrelevant to the task at hand.
Hotchner's voice cut through the low buzz of the precinct, clear and authoritative. "We're here to assist, not take over. Your insights are invaluable." His words were a bridge, extending partnership to the weary officers.
The chief, a grizzled veteran with eyes that had seen too much, stepped forward to greet them. "We're at a dead end," he admitted, shaking Hotchner's hand with a grip that spoke of desperation. "This guy is thorough, leaves no trace."
Reid, his eyes sharp behind the lenses of his glasses, peered over the crime scene photos scattered across the table. "Has there been any consistency in the locations of the attacks?" he asked, his mind already sifting through the data like a codebreaker.
A detective, her badge dulled by the dust of the chase, shook her head. "All within a ten-mile radius, but no specific pattern. Random as far as we can tell."
Evelyn leaned over the map, her fingers tracing the spider web of roads and locations, her brow in concentration. "Not random, a constellation..." she whispered, more to herself than anyone else.
It was there, in the quiet hum of her focus, the pattern emerged--a dance of dates and places that wove together.
"Look at the dates," Evelyn said, her voice a beacon cutting through the fog. "Each one aligns with a local event. It's not random; it's opportunistic. He's hiding in plain sight, using the crowds as cover for escape."
Silence fell, a heavy cloak, as all eyes turned to Evelyn. Reid's lips quivered in a semblance of a smile, his respect for her clear in the warmth of his eyes. "She's right," he affirmed. "The unsub isn't just local; he's embedded in the community, using public events as his hunting ground."
Hotchner's nod was slow, thoughtful, the gears of strategy turning behind his stoic facade. "Good work, Evelyn. Let's get a list of upcoming events, cross-reference with his known comfort zone. We might just catch him in the act."
--
The office was a cocoon of concentration, bathed in the soft hum of working minds. The only sources of light were the twin glows of computer screens, reflecting off Reid and Evelyn's focused faces. Papers littered the desk, each one a piece of the puzzle they were desperately trying to solve.
Reid, his eyes scanning the data before them, spoke without looking away from the screen. "If we consider the unsub's preference for high-density events, it's logical to deduce that he will utilize the inherent disorder as a smokescreen for his escape," he said, his voice a low murmur in the quiet room.
Evelyn's eyes, bright with the thrill of the hunt, were fixed on the screen as she leaned forward, her curiosity piqued by the list of events. Her hair had loosened during the long hours of research, giving her an air of approachability.
Reid, ever the picture of academic focus, had his brows furrowed in concentration. His hair was a bit more unruly than usual, the curls just slightly askew. The faintest hint of a five o'clock shadow graced his jawline, adding a rugged edge to his otherwise youthful appearance.
Evelyn leaned in, her eyes scanning the list. "What about this one?" she asked, pointing to an entry on the screen. "The annual bourbon event. It's popular, draws a big crowd, and it's happening within his hunting grounds."
Reid's eyes flickered with approval. "Good catch," he affirmed, his voice steady and calm, yet there was an undercurrent of enthusiasm for her keen observation.
Evelyn's cheeks flushed with a rosy hue, her eyes sparkling with pride. The praise from Dr. Reid, sent a wave of elation through her--all the way in between her thighs. She dragged her lower lip through her teeth, straightening her posture, as she turned to him. "So, we could catch him there," she said.
Reid observed the transformation with a gentle, knowing smile. There was a vibrancy to Evelyn's enthusiasm that reminded him so vividly of his own younger self--brilliant, eager to prove, and somewhat oblivious to the darkness they were about to face. Yet, there was a shadow of concern that crept into his thoughts; the job had a way of chipping away at one's spirit, and he hoped Evelyn would be spared the harsher realities for a little while longer. He saw her potential for greatness, but also the innocence that he once carried--an innocence he hoped to protect, even if just for a little while longer.
Reid leaned back in his chair, his eyes meeting Evelyn's with a mentor's patience. "It's a multifaceted problem," he began, his tone measured and informative. "We have to account for variables that could influence the unsub's behavior--law enforcement visibility, crowd dynamics, ingress and egress points."
Evelyn nodded, her pen pausing over the notebook that was quickly becoming a testament to her dedication. "Right, exit strategies," she echoed, her voice a mix of realization and admiration. "I didn't even think about that."
"There's always a pattern, a logic to their choices, even if it's skewed by their own delusions," Reid continued, the profiler in him surfacing as he spoke. "Our job is to decode that logic, to think like them, so we can be there to stop them."
Evelyn's scribbles grew more fervent, her eyes alight with the challenge. "To get into their heads," she mused, looking up at Reid with newfound understanding.
"Exactly," Reid affirmed with a nod, a subtle smile acknowledging her quick grasp of the concept. "And remember, the most seemingly insignificant detail could be the key to unlocking their next move."
The realization struck like a bolt of lightning, and the urgency was palpable in the room. Evelyn's breath hitched as she stared at the date, her voice a mix of alarm and adrenaline. "Reid, it's tomorrow," she said, the words tumbling out with the weight of their implications.
Reid's reaction was immediate, his sharp mind already racing through the implications. His eyes now mirrored Evelyn's intensity. "We need to call Hotch," he stated, the command in his voice leaving no room for hesitation.
--
The BAU team, after hours of meticulous planning for the bourbon festival operation, stepped into the hotel lobby--a spacious area with high ceilings and a grand chandelier casting a warm glow over the polished marble floors. The air was filled with a mix of anticipation and fatigue from the day's efforts.
Morgan's eyes, sharp and observant, scanned the surroundings before resting on Evelyn. His muscular frame relaxed against the front desk, his FBI badge glinting under the lobby's lights. "You know, for a rookie, you're not too shabby at this profiling gig," he teased, his voice carrying a hint of respect.
Evelyn, despite the exhaustion that shadowed her features, still managed to exude an effortless elegance. Her hair, usually tied back for practicality, had strands falling loosely around her face, softening her determined expression. "Oh, please. I learned from watching the best," she quipped, nudging him lightly with her shoulder.
Morgan chuckled. "Just remember, it's all fun and games until someone gets out-profiled by the new kid."
In the hours between the precinct and the hotel, the team had dissected every detail of the unsub's previous attacks. They mapped out the festival grounds, assigned undercover positions, and established communication protocols. They even ran through several scenarios, each time refining their strategy to ensure they were ready for any contingency.
As they finalized check-ins, Garcia buzzed in with last-minute intel, adding another layer to the plan. They would need to be vigilant, adaptive, and above all, united to outsmart a foe who had eluded everyone thus far. The team dispersed to their rooms, Reid lingering behind with Evelyn as their rooms ended up being next to each other.
The dimly lit hallway to their rooms was quiet, save for the soft thud of their footsteps on the plush carpet. Reid walked alongside Evelyn; his profile bathed in the intermittent glow of the overhead lights. His hair was tousled, likely from the countless times he'd run his fingers through it in thought, giving him a disheveled charm that Evelyn couldn't help but find endearing.
As they reached her door, Evelyn's bag strap slipped from her shoulder, prompting her to grasp it tighter. In doing so, the sleeve of her blouse shifted, revealing the gentle slope of her collarbone. Reid's gaze inadvertently followed the movement, and he felt an inexplicable warmth flood to his cheeks. It was a simple, innocent moment, yet it stirred something within him.
"Here we are," Evelyn said, her voice breaking the silence as she fumbled with her key card.
Reid, still slightly flustered, cleared his throat. "Yeah, um, goodnight, Evelyn. See you in the morning," he managed to say, his eyes lingered a moment longer than they should've before he turned towards his own door.
"Goodnight, Spencer," she replied, her use of his first name sending a ripple through the air.
--
The bourbon festival buzzed with energy, a tapestry of sounds and colors under the open sky. The scent of oak and vanilla wafted through the air, mingling with the sweet, earthy aroma of the surrounding food stalls. Laughter and lively conversations created a backdrop to the twang of banjos and fiddles playing a lively bluegrass tune, setting toes tapping on the grassy grounds.
As Evelyn navigated the festival crowd, Reid found his attention inadvertently drawn to her. The way the setting sun played with her hair, transforming it into a cascade of burnished waves, and the way the sundress accentuated her every curve with an understated elegance. There was something about Evelyn in this light, in this moment, that captivated him, and he caught himself appreciating the sight more than he had anticipated.
Reid's attire was a departure from his usual suits--a plaid shirt that brought out the flecks of amber in his eyes, sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and dark jeans that were both functional and inconspicuous. His hair lay in casual disarray, seeming as though the festival's carefree spirit had influenced his usually precise appearance.
The bourbon festival was in full swing, the air filled with the sounds of laughter and music. Undercover among the revelers, Reid and Evelyn blended in seamlessly, their casual attire and relaxed demeanor belying the sharp vigilance in their eyes.
Evelyn leaned against a wooden stall, sipping her fake drink as she observed the crowed. "So, we're looking for a male in his 30s, likely with a history of gambling debts and penchant for superstition," she recited quietly to Reid.
Reid, who was pretending to be engrossed in a festival brochure, nodded subtly. "Exactly. The four-leaf clover he leaves with his victims--it's not just superstition; it's a signature. It suggests a compulsion, a need to leave his mark, which is indicative of a narcissistic personality. He's taunting law enforcement, believing he can control the outcome of his crimes--like he's playing his own game of chance."
Evelyn, her voice low and steady leaned in. "So, we're looking for someone who blends in too well, someone who's watching but not engaging," she observed, her gaze sweeping over the crowd.
Reid nodded, his attention divided between her and the faces passing by. "Our unsub targets individuals who are isolated, perhaps separated from the group--easy prey in a setting like this," he explained.
Evelyn's eyes followed his line of sight. "Right, the loners. The ones who look like they're searching for something or someone," she added.
As the evening progressed, the shadows began to cast across the faces of the crowd. Reid and Evelyn moved through the throng, their gazes sharp and discerning. They passed a group of raucous college students, their laughter ringing out as they clinked their glasses in a toast. A little further on, a family of four navigated the crowd, the children's faces painted with whimsical designs, their hands sticky with cotton candy.
The air was rich with the scent of smoked meats and the char of oak barrels, the soundscape a blend of folk music and the murmur of hundreds of conversations.
Reid's voice was low as he leaned in, "It's fascinating how a beverage can be both a social lubricant and a potential clue in a criminal investigation. I suppose that adds a whole new layer to the term 'spirit detective'."
Evelyn's laughter was like a melody that cut through the ambient noise of the festival, infectious and unrestrained. It was the kind of laugh that turned heads, not just for its volume but for its genuine quality.
She turned to Reid, her eyes alight with a playful glint. "So, we're adding 'spirit detective' to your already impressive resume? I must say, it's quite the title upgrade from genius profiler," she quipped, her tone teasing.
"Easy, we don't want to draw attention," Reid murmured, the corner of his mouth twitching in amusement. Her laugh was a laugh he realized he wanted to hear again, a candid burst of warmth that cut through the coolness of his analytical mind.
The festival's din faded into the background as Evelyn's attention was momentarily captured by Hotch's presence. He stood there, a figure of quiet authority even in his casual undercover attire. The subtle checkered pattern of his shirt did little to conceal his disciplined build, and the way his jeans fit just right made Evelyn's mouth feel dry all of a sudden.
Hotch's eyes, usually a well of stoicism, held a flicker of something else as they met Evelyn's--a momentary lapse in his guarded demeanor. His gaze, sharp and assessing, traveled over her in a swift, sweeping motion that was both professional and personal. It lingered just a beat too long on the curve of her neckline.
Hotch, after his brief lapse, was once again the picture of professionalism. His conversation with Rossi resumed, his demeanor unreadable, the brief moment of personal interest concealed behind a mask of focus and command. Evelyn, still oblivious to the subtle undercurrents of attraction, turned her attention back to the mission, her mind as sharp as ever.
Evelyn excused herself from Spencer, weaving through the crowd in search of the bathroom. The path to the restrooms was a stark contrast to the bourbon-soaked revelry Evelyn had left behind. The vibrant string of lights gave way to the occasional flickering bulb that did little to pierce the encroaching darkness. The music, once a lively companion, now played a muffled soundtrack to her solitary walk, the notes distorted and distant.
The restrooms, a small cluster of temporary structures, stood isolated at the edge of the festival grounds. Evelyn's boots sank slightly in the soft earth with each step, the recent rain turning the ground to a treacherous mix of mud and grass.
As she stepped out, the sense of solitude was abruptly shattered. A hand clamped over her mouth with startling force, stifling the scream that rose in her throat. Her assailant's arm was an iron band around her, pulling her back against a solid chest. Panic flared, her breath hot and desperate against the palm pressed to her lips.
Panic surged, her heart thundering in her chest, her mind screaming for action, but her body momentarily paralyzed by fear. It was him--the unsub. His breath was hot against her ear, his grip unyielding.
Adrenaline surged through Evelyn's veins, her training taking over as she drove her elbow back with precision, aiming for the soft of her attacker's abdomen. The unsub grunted, his grip loosening just enough for her to twist out of his hold. The unsub recovered quickly; his face contorted with anger.
He lunged at her, throwing a punch that Evelyn narrowly dodged. She countered with a swift kick to his knee, causing him to buckle, but he was relentless. He swung again, this time connecting with her cheek, the impact sending a jolt of pain through her jaw.
Evelyn staggered but didn't falter. She wiped the trickle of blood from her lip and glared at the unsub with fierce determination. With a swift move, she stepped inside his reach, delivered a powerful uppercut that snapped his head back, and followed with a knee to his midsection that doubled him over.
As he gasped for air, Evelyn seized the opportunity. She grabbed his arm, twisted behind his back, and pushed him down to the ground. "FBI! You're under arrest," she declared, her voice steady despite the pounding of her heart.
The scene was a rush of motion as the team manifested in an instant. Reid's face was a canvas of raw concern, his eyes searching for signs of distress. Hotch allowed a rare glimpse of worry to surface as he took in her appearance--the bleeding lip and the bruise blooming on her cheek. Evelyn's hair, though slightly disheveled from the altercation, framed her face.
The team's anxiety was palpable, a collective breath held until they were certain she was unharmed. It was her first case, and the stakes had never felt more personal. Yet, as Evelyn stood there, her bright smile breaking through the tension, her spirit undimmed by the encounter.
"I got him!" she declared; her smile unwavering as she met the eyes of her team.
--
Evelyn perched precariously on the cold metal edge of the ambulance, the harsh glare of its lights casting long shadows on the pavement. The EMT, with gentle hands, tended to the gash on her lip--a stark red against her skin. Each touch of the disinfectant was a sharp reminder of the day's chaos, a stinging sensation that seemed to echo her inner turmoil.
Despite the pain, Evelyn found solace in the rhythm of conversation, her words weaving between the EMT's methodical treatment. She spoke of trivial things at first, the weather, the relentless pace of the city, anything to keep the silence at bay. Yet, even as her voice trembled slightly, revealing cracks in her usually unflappable demeanor, she smiled--a smile, wistful curve of the lips.
Spencer's approach was hesitant, his hands buried deep in the refuge of his pockets, betraying a casual facade that his furrowed brow contradicted. As he drew nearer, the dim light fell upon Evelyn's features, illuminating the stark contrast of bruised skin against the sterile white of the ambulance's interior. His eyes, a mirror of his internal struggle, winced at the sight, a silent testament to the empathy that swelled within him.
"How you holding up?" he inquired, his voice a soft undercurrent amidst the wail of distant sirens. The concern in his tone was evident, wrapping around her like a warm blanket.
Evelyn, her face a canvas of the day's trails, bore the marks of the ordeal with an unsettling grace. The cut on her lip, now cleaned, was a vivid line drawn across her otherwise smooth complexion. Flecks of dried blood were still visible.
Evelyn's smile, though small and tinged with irony, was a testament to her unyielding optimism. "I've had better nights," she quipped, the humor in her voice a gentle balm against the sting of the EMT's ministrations. As a fresh bandage adhered to her cheek--she winced.
"I know it's part of the job, but... I'm sorry you had to go through that," Spencer said, his eyes meeting hers with sincerity.
Evelyn's shrug was a delicate dance of nonchalance, her shoulders lifting in a gesture that belied the adrenaline still coursing through her veins. "Comes with the territory, right?" she said, her voice a mix of jest and earnest. "Besides, we got him, and that's what counts." Her words were a shield, a deflection of the concern she saw mirrored in Spencer's eyes.
Spencer's response was a nod, subtle yet laden with the weight of unspoken words. The corner of his mouth curved into a faint smile, a silent accolade for her courage. "You did good, Evelyn. Really good." His affirmation was simple, but it carried the depth of his respect for her, for the strength she wielded so effortlessly.
"Thanks," Evelyn replied, her gratitude genuine, a softening in the steel of her eyes. "For checking on me." It was a moment of vulnerability, a crack in her armor that allowed gratitude to seep through.
"It's what teammates do." Spencer said, his voice a low timbre that seemed to resonate with the quiet of the night. His gaze held hers, a momentary tether, it lingered a beat longer than necessary.
As the silence stretched between them, a figure approached, his footsteps measured and purposeful. It was Hotch, his presence commanding even in the dim light. He carried with him a blanket. Spencer, ever perceptive, felt the shift in the air and excused himself with a nod, stepping away to give them space. Hotch's eyes met Evelyn's, a wordless exchange passing between them before he spoke.
"You should keep warm," Hotch said, his voice firm yet laced with concern. He unfolded the blanket with practiced ease and draped it over her shoulders, the soft material enveloping in a gentle embrace. His eyes inadvertently lingered on the wound upon her lip, the starkness of the injury drawing his focus. It was a fleeting moment, but in it, there was an intensity. The EMT, giving them a brief nod, finished up and moved aside, leaving them in a quiet bubble of privacy.
Evelyn pulled the blanket tighter around her, the fabric against the night's chill. Hotch's proximity was a force itself, the air charged with an energy that seemed to pulse with each of his measured breaths. She was acutely aware of his gaze, the way it rested upon her with an intensity that was both unsettling and reassuring.
"Thank you," she murmured, her gaze lifting the meet Hotch's steady one.
Hotch's stance was as resolute as his reputation, his figure cutting a commanding silhouette against the flickering lights of the emergency vehicles. "Evelyn," he intoned, his voice carrying the weight of authority softened by a trace of concern. His eyes, usually a guarded fortress, held a glimmer of uncharacteristic turmoil as they fixed upon her.
Evelyn, still cocooned in the blanket, looked up to meet his gaze. The ambient light played across her features, highlighting the youthful resolve etched into her bruised face.
In that moment, as he saw her standing her ground, something within Hotch shifted. The sight of her in the fray, fiercely fighting for her life, had ignited a surge of panic unlike anything he'd experienced with other team members. It was a visceral reaction, one that puzzled him with the intensity. Was it the paternal instinct to protest the progeny of his old friend and mentor, Gideon? Or was it something else?
Whatever the cause, it was a jarring sentiment that Hotch quickly compartmentalized, returning to the matter at hand with his usual stoic clarity. "You know the risks of going off alone, even for a moment," he reiterated, his stern gaze lingering on the cut of her lip--a silent reproof of her impulse.
Evelyn absorbed the words, her own eyes reflecting a complex mix or appreciation and a newfound understanding of the weight of her actions.
Hotch's gaze softened as he concluded, "Despite that, you handled yourself well out there. It's clear you're Gideon's daughter, and that's not just a responsibility--it's a strength. I have no doubt you'll become an invaluable part of this team. You're going to be okay, Evelyn."

“Are you sure you don’t need any help up?”
“I’m alright, thank you,” Evelyn smiled at their manager as he opened the trunk, pulling her suitcase out and setting it on ground for her, popping the handle up, “You need to go home sometime too!” His face held a warm smile at her words as he bowed his head to her, closing the trunk.
“Ah yes, have a goodnight then.”
She waved goodbye to the manager before making her way into the apartment building, pulling her weighted suitcase behind her. She never realizes how much she actually packs for small trips until after she returns home and she feels like she’s dragging an elephant around in her suitcase.
The ride up to her floor couldn’t have been better in her book. It was short and sweet, just enjoying the peace and quiet from the emptiness inside at this time of night.
Evelyn had expected to return to her apartment empty with the lights off, Mingyu having taken Winnie to his apartment while she was away in Paris. What she wasn’t expecting when she returned home was the lights still very much on and the smell of food cooking from the kitchen filling up her nose.
Winnie had jumped up from her little dog bed at the sound of the door closing, erupting into a fit of barking, standing on her hind legs behind the safety of her doggy playpen.
“Who is it Winnie? Is it Eomma?,” A familiar voice made her smile, toeing her shoes off by the front door, placing them in the open space on the shoe rack. She clicked down the handle on her suitcase closed, leaving it sit by the door to fiddle with later. She was so exhausted from the trip that she wanted nothing more than to just shower and go to bed but with the addition of food being made, it put a halt on that plan as her stomach let out a deep rumble, one that had her questioning if she had been hungry this entire time.
Evelyn rounded the corner into the kitchen, pure love and admiration flooding through her veins seeing Mingyu standing at the stove, comfy clothes hugging his body with her apron tied firmly around his waist. She had only been gone a few days but it felt like forever seeing him again.
“Hey there cutie,” Her voice was giddy as she shuffled her feet over to him, pressing her chest against his back as she wrapped her arms around his waist, basking in the warmth from his back, “I missed you.” She squeezed him around the waist as she buried her face into his back.
Making sure the stove was turned off, Mingyu placed the pot on the back burner before turning around in her hold, clasping his hands behind her back, “What if I said I missed you more.” He leaned down and puckered his lips wanting a kiss which Evelyn gladly granted as she stood on her toes and pressed her lips against his.
“Impossible because I love you the mostest,” She leaned back to look him in the eyes, a grin spread across his face as she pressed her lips against his once more, “Can’t beat that.”
“Oh yeah?” Mingyu challenged, moving his hands down to grip around the back of her thighs before hoisting her up and onto the kitchen island, bracketing his hands on either side of her hips. She giggled as she pulled him forward in between her legs by the straps of her apron, pressing her lips against his.
“What is this? You leave for a few days and come home frisky,” His thumbs rubbed at the sides of her thighs, falling in love with her all over again as he stared at her.
“Not frisky,” Her hands fell to hold his bicep, she knew she wouldn’t fall off the island with him standing there but it made her feel safer, “Just tired.” She peeked over his shoulder at the pot on the stove, hot steam rising out of the pot.
“Whatcha making?”
“I gave grandma a call and asked for her recipe to make your favorite meal,” He dipped his head down and let out a laugh, thinking back to his frantic phone call earlier in the day, “I wanted to make sure I was doing everything right and had all of the correct ingredients.”
“You’re so sweet,” Evelyn pouted her lips, not wanting to cry over pasta. Just when she was about to tear up, she was interrupted by a series of squeak noises coming from the living room. Turning her head to the side, Winnie was back up on her hind legs, squeaking her little carrot toy and wagging her tail back and forth.
“Let me go see the baby,” Mingyu backed away from the counter, helping Evelyn hop down. She gave him another kiss before moving around him, but not without Mingyu giving her a little spank on her ass. She giggled the rest of the way into the living room, making her way over to the playpen.
“My little baby,” She pouted again, bending down to pick her up, hugging her little form close to her body as Winnie attacked her face with puppy kisses, “I’ve missed you so much.” Evelyn moved her head in various directions as Winnie continued to lick at her face, happy now that Evelyn was home again.
She walked back into the kitchen after Winnie’s excitement had calmed down enough, snuggling her face into her body as she stood beside Mingyu, watching as he plated up their dinner.
“Is it Eomma?” Evelyn mimicked him from earlier, pressing kisses to the side of Winnie’s face, receiving kisses in return, “When did you start calling me that?”
“Well I um-,” His ears turned red from the embarrassment he was getting from being caught, picking both of their plates up, walking with Evelyn to the table, “Winnie was up at night crying because you weren’t here and the only way she would be okay again was to tell her that Eomma would be back soon.”
This time, Evelyn couldn’t help but tear up hearing of Winnie’s troubles, and that she was the cause of her crying at night. She sniffled and buried her face into the puppy’s body, hugging her a little closer. Mingyu took notice of Evelyn’s crying and quickly put the plates down, bringing her into his arms.
“Hey, Hey, it’s okay,” He kissed the top of her head before resting his chin on spot he had kissed, hugging her from behind, “She was crying because she loves you, baby.” Winnie licked at Mingyu’s hand as he pet behind her ear, thumping her tail against Evelyn’s leg.
“I’m taking you with me next time,” Evelyn leaned back into Mingyu’s chest, blinking the tears away, “I don’t care what anyone says, I can’t leave you behind anymore.”
After a few more moments of holding her, Evelyn walked her back over and set Winnie down inside of her playpen, throwing her little carrot squeak toy for her to chase after. She wiped her eyes with her fingers, then wiped her fingers on her pants from the wetness.
“If I’m Eomma,” She held onto the top of one of the dining chairs, smiling over at Mingyu bringing their drinks over from the kitchen, “Does that make you Appa?”
Mingyu set their drinks on the table, barking out a laugh as he cupped Evelyn’s face between his hands. He tilted her head upwards as he pressed his lips to hers and then onto her forehead, “Of course it does.”
He swiped his thumbs underneath her eyes to catch the remaining bits of wetness that had accumulated up.
Evelyn closed her eyes briefly, wanting to stay planted right here in his arms, but was instantly brought back with remembering what her intended purpose was, “I’m going to shower real fast. I smell like an airport and I feel so gross.”
“Go freshen up,” He pecked her lips again, “I love you and I’ll see you afterwards. Unless you want me to-.”
“Look who’s being frisky now,” Evelyn patted him on the stomach with a smile, already knowing what he was gonna finish with, “I love you too, I’ll be right back.”

Eden pressed on the doorbell, waiting for her sister to open up. The girls had a lot of schedules after the Born Pink tour ended, but Eden was finally able to take a break and spend the rest of her sister's pregnancy with her.
The door opened, her lips curving upwards before being met with Evelyn. They both gasped at each other. It was the encore concert in Seoul that Eden last saw her sister and she was finally showing. The woman had leggings and a loose shirt on. It was finally starting to hit both of them that Evelyn was going to be a mother and Eden was going to be an aunt soon.
“Oh my god!” Eden slapped her hand to her mouth, almost dropping her overnight bag on the ground. Her belly was bigger and Evelyn was shocked to see her hair cut so short again.
“Your hair!” She reached forward to brush through the strands of her short blonde hair.
“Your belly!” Her sister moved out of the way, letting Eden grab her bag and get inside before shutting the door and locking it. “How many weeks are you now?”
“30 on Friday.” She sighed with her hands on her hips. “I know I’m the elephant in the room but don’t think I didn’t notice your hair.”
“Shut up.” Eden shook her head from side to side as her hair was so weightless and freeing. “We chopped it off yesterday. I forgot how much I like it short. So much easier to take care of.”
“Blonde’s your color.” She leans in, pressing a kiss to Eden’s cheek and brushing her hair away from her forehead. “Alright lil sis. Tell me, what did Noah put you up to?”
“Shush, he didn’t put me up to anything.” A lie. Evelyn guessed that much. “Okay, well he said he had a work trip and he felt bad for leaving you by yourself until he comes home. He didn’t want you to be alone overnight and I wanted to spend some time with my sister because I miss her a lot.”
“Isn’t he just adorable?” Evelyn opens her arms for a hug, laughing as Eden tries to embrace her awkwardly with her bump in the way. “He won’t let me drive, got me these cushion mats for my feet and a chair on wheels so when I do have to be in the kitchen, I can just sit and push myself from counter to counter. Also helps me in and out of the shower.”
“Sounds like he’s very protective.”
“Oh very protective. And sometimes that results in me getting irritated because I feel suffocated and then I feel bad.”
Eden pouts her lips, holding her wrists. “I’m sure he understands. This is your first pregnancy, after all. He just wants to make sure you’re taken care of.”
She nods slowly, knowing Eden is right. An idea pops up into her head. “Do you wanna see the nursery?”
“Oh god yes!”
Evelyn intertwines their hands, dragging her upstairs and to the room beside the master bedroom. When Eden catches a glimpse into the room, her jaw hangs open as she looks around. It appears cluttered but in the best way. She walked over to the crib that was pressed against the wall, running her fingers along the white wood. When she looked up, there was a mobile hanging from the ceiling decorated with felt leaves and clouds. Then she saw the Krunk plush sitting in the corner of the crib. The bear was pink and dressed as one of Eden’s signature outfits from their music video.
Eden chuckled, picking up the plush and smiling back at Evelyn who was leaning against the doorframe. “Really?”
“What? The baby is gonna have the girls from the biggest girl group in the world as their aunts. They’re gonna be a Blink before they even take their first breath.”
“Have you found out the gender yet? I wanna start buying stuff but have no idea what to get.”
“Only my doctor knows. We told her that we want to be completely surprised. That’s why the nursery looks so bland right now. I have different colored flowers for the mobile, sheets, curtains, all that fun stuff. I’m still debating if we should paint the walls. What do you think?”
Eden clicked her tongue before studying the room again. “You can always keep it white and add colored blankets, pictures, rugs, toys, clothing. You don't want there to be too much pink or blue. What if they rebel when they’re older and think it’s not cool to have their room painted this one color?”
“I guess you have a point. But look.” Evelyn waddled over to the changing table where she grabbed a mini projector. “I got this for a nightlight. You can’t see it now but it shows the northern lights!”
It was so clear in how Evelyn spoke and her eyes twinkled that she was really looking forward to motherhood. The thought she put into the nursery was only the start. Eden noticed how passionate and excited she was.
“It’s really cute. You guys have done a great
job so far.” Eden sets the bear down and takes a seat in the rocking chair in the corner. “Have you thought of any names yet? This chair is comfy.”
“I think I want to keep the E names going in the family. My choices for boys are Ellis, Elijah, and Ezra.
Eden tilts her head approvingly. “Nice, I like those.”
“Girls; Evangeline, Esther, and Elsie. But we’re having trouble coming up with Korean names that go well with them. I want them to have both.”
“Like us?”
“Like us.” Evelyn nods with a smile until she blows raspberries out her lips. “But I promised Noah that if it’s a boy, we can start the family chain of N names.”
“That’s fair enough. I love Evangeline so I’m crossing my fingers it’s a girl.”
“You and me both. I’m crossing my fingers, legs, trying to cross my toes but they’re so swollen these days.” She switches most of her weight onto another foot after being on the other for too long. “What did you have planned for today?”
Eden told her in advance that she made plans for them so she was all ready to go when she arrived. She stood up from the rocking chair with a devilish smirk. “It’s a surprise. You can’t know until we get there.”
“Do I need to bring anything?”
“Nope. Just yourself. You’ll love it, I promise.”
Evelyn loved surprises even though they made her anxious. The girls carried Eden’s bag to the guest bedroom, waiting for her sister by the front door. She had her purse and a jacket since it was starting to drop in temperature.
“Can you let me drive, please?” Evelyn folded her hands together, pleading.
“Is that safe? What will Noah say?”
“Noah isn’t going to find out.” She snatches the car keys from Eden to unlock it.
“Only if I can drive back!” She is already strutting to the car.
“Deal!”
Eden walks around to the driver's side, making sure Evelyn can get in without any trouble. She looks content being able to drive after it was forbidden months ago.
“You good?” Eden gave her a thumbs up while raising her eyebrows.
“Yup. Go ahead and get in. I just have to adjust the seat some.”
She complies, getting in on the passengers side and buckling herself in. They turn on the heat to warm up the car and find a radio station.
“Doesn’t this mean you’re gonna have to buy a ‘baby on board’ sticker?” Eden cracks a joke, watching as the woman starts to snort.
“Yup. Noah will probably buy a ‘student driver’ sticker just to be extra safe.”
Tumblr media
“Pull in here… there it is!” Eden exclaims, pointing to the massage spa ahead.
“Shut up.”
“Surprise!” They get parked and grab all their things before locking up.
“What did you do?”
“You are getting a massage, Evie. Did you know prenatal massages were a thing?”
Evelyn chuckled, smiling as the two girls walked to the entrance with their arms locked. “Yes, Eden.”
“Well, I didn’t. The second I found out, I booked an appointment for you.”
“Please tell me you’re getting a massage, too.” She squeezed the girl's arm, looking at her like she was in trouble.
Eden hesitated before smiling. “Yes, I am. As of now, our girls' night has just begun.”
They get checked in and are called back in no time. Evelyn is on the other side of the dim room, getting comfortable on the table and lying on her side. They provide her with a body pillow to support her bump, and she looks like she is in complete bliss. They’re getting their massages done by two different people, but Eden lets her pick out the oils, sounds, and the overall ambience. She got distracted watching her sister lay down and she really hoped that this would at least help her in some way. If she’s in pain, she’s doing a good job of hiding it.
The young woman doing Eden’s massage shakes her from her thoughts, indicating her to lie on her stomach. She smiles awkwardly before doing so, letting her head fall into the face cradle.
As the massage proceeds, they both feel all their stresses and tension from the past year release. Her body has been worn down by being on tour for so many months, and she feels it right away when the woman applies pressure to her back. Eden can't even begin to imagine what her sister must feel like. So many things are happening to her body all at once, so she hopes this can provide a little relief. And when she hears Evelyn start to snore, her heart swells.
Eden holds the door open for her, joining at her side and locking their arms together.
Evelyn lets out a deep breath. “That was seriously so amazing. I think Muffin loved it as well.”
“Muffin?”
“It’s got a much nicer ring to it than ‘the baby’. I thought of it when the lady was massaging my belly.”
“It’s cute.” Eden takes the keys from her, helping her inside the car again before going to the other side. She starts the car and adjusts the seat and mirror. “Is there anything else you wanna do?”
“I love you and would love to stay out a while more, but I can’t stop peeing and we’re hungry.” She smiles and pats Eden on the shoulder. “Thank you for the massage.”
“What are you hungry for?”
She takes a minute to think before slouching in the seat. “I want a cheesy corn dog and a big order of tteokbokki.”
“Can you and Muffin handle the spice?” She looked at the woman with wide eyes. She’s never actually seen her sister eat since she got pregnant, so she’s quite excited to see how this plays out.
“I love spice. Just thinking about the cheese melting on top–“Evelyn moans, throwing her head back. “Sorry. Pregnancy cravings. Muffin loves it too. They do a little dance whenever I eat something spicy.”
“Corn dogs and cheesy tteokbokki it is.” She was determined to get her sister whatever she wanted to eat if it meant she could finally see the baby kick.
They were gonna make it at home but Evelyn changed her mind last second and ordered takeout. She wanted to teach her sister how to cook but she was too exhausted for that today.
There were three orders of tteokbokki. One for Eden and the other two for Evelyn. The corn dogs were doubled, and it was hard to believe that she could eat that much on her own, despite the baby growing in her stomach. Eden had a little of hers left and she planned on saving it for later. She watched Evelyn in disbelief as she was on her second bowl, almost half of it gone when she tapped out.
“Don’t look at me like that. I’m gonna come back for more in like two hours.” She rolled her eyes, wiping her mouth and rubbing her hand back and forth on her belly.
The girls got ready for bed and Eden joined her in her bedroom as they started a drama they had been hearing all about recently. When they finished the first episode, they both started laughing uncontrollably when seeing the still frame and OST start playing.
“Those will never get old.” Evelyn holds her chest from laughing too hard and they start the next episode.
Eden got up momentarily to take off the sheet mask she had on before Evelyn starts calling for her. She panics and her heart drops, letting the mask fall to the bathroom floor and nearly falling on her face when she turns to see her sister. Her sleep shirt is lifted to reveal her belly and she has the biggest smile on her face. “Eden quick! Hurry, Muffin is kicking!”
Eden lets out the biggest sigh of relief, having to catch her breath from almost going into panic mode. “Don’t do that. You scared me.” She plops down onto the bed on her stomach, using her elbows to support her as she looks between Evelyn’s face and her belly.
“Hold on, I just have to give her a few pokes.” She massages her tummy, tapping her fingers where the kick was last seen.
“You want to have a girl so bad, don’t you?”
“Of course I do. I want a mini me.”
“Maybe if we keep speaking it out into ex-” Eden stops when she sees her belly bulge in one spot. She gasps, widening her eyes as the baby kicks a second time, except it's a tiny movement. “Oh my god.”
“See? She loves spicy food.” Evelyn grabs her hand, placing it on her bump and moving it around to encourage more kicks.
A minute goes by and Eden starts to think the baby does not like her because as soon as her palm met her stomach, everything stopped.
“Don’t worry. She was a little shy with her dad at first too. Give her a minute to warm up.” She reassures the girl, keeping her hand where it is while she poked the spaces between her fingers. “Muffin, say hi to your aunt. Y’know, the aunt who’s a global sensation and I play her music around the house all the time. She’s gonna spoil you no matter what I say and she’s gonna be your best friend–besides me and dad.”
Eden tries to keep her lips from quivering as she speaks and hoping they’ll become less shy from her words. She waits a few more seconds until she feels a tiny, bashful kick against her palm. She gasps and her eyes twinkle.
“See? Just a shy, little Blink.”
Eden giggles, poking at different spots on Evelyn’s tummy to see if she can get any more kicks. There were moments they’d get a tiny push, much bigger than the last and in longer stretches of time until they started paying attention to the drama.
Eden found it hard to focus on the drama, so when scenes came on with characters she didn’t really care for, her attention turned to her sister's bump. She smiled to herself and held herself back from tapping on her belly. “So the first thing I need to do when I go home is make a cd of all our unreleased music. She’s gonna know all our fan chants before she comes out.”
Evelyn snorts, covering her mouth. “I’ll send you pictures with her holding the hammer.”

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that Evelyn Evelyn is one of the greatest albums ever created? It has so many fucking good songs. Evelyn Evelyn, Sandy Fishnets, A Campaign of Shock and Awe, and Chicken Man are my favorites. (And I also really like Have You Seen My Sister Evelyn and Elephant Elephant)
And I LOVE when albums tell a story through each song so you have to listen to it in order, but they’re also good songs on their own. Like The Wall by Pink Floyd.

Dread by the Decade: Murders in the Zoo
👻 You can support or commission me on Ko-Fi! ❤️
Tumblr media
Year: 1933 Genre: Psychological Horror Rating: UR (Recommended: PG-13) Country: United States Language: English Runtime: 1 hour 2 minutes
Tumblr media
Director: A. Edward Sutherland Cinematographer: Ernest Haller Writers: Philip Wylie, Seton I. Miller Cast: Lionel Atwill, Gail Patrick, Randolph Scott, Kathleen Burke, Charlie Ruggles
Tumblr media
Plot: An abusive husband uses the animals he donates to a zoo to commit murder.
Review: While its fun premise is squandered, its realistic portrayal of domestic abuse and Atwill's ominous performance save it from total irrelevance.
Overall Rating: 2.5/5
Tumblr media
Story: 3/5 - A bizarre amount of time is dedicated to Ruggles' inessential comedic relief character instead of mystery and kills. Its strongest plot point is the relationship between Eric and Evelyn.
Performances: 3/5 - Atwill is great as the cruel Eric, but Ruggles is often grating and Burke is sometimes stiff.
Cinematography: 3/5 - Serviceable.
Tumblr media
Editing: 2.5/5 - Scenes sometimes end too abruptly.
Effects: 4/5
Sets: 3/5 - Realistic and well constructed but, like everything else, there is a distinct absence of creativity.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 4.5/5 - The prosthetics for the sewn mouth are quite shocking for the time.
youtube
Trigger Warnings:
Real animal abuse (elephant hooks, improper habitats, animal fighting, etc.)
Very brief, moderate violence
Animal death (fake)
Domestic abuse
Brief marital assault
Brief racist discussion of Asia
Brief discussion of alcoholism

Lolly. As a fellow Willow enthusiast (ASIAS and Labyrinth Hunters are some of my all time fav episodes) and Gus enjoyer, do you think they'll still get to play a role?
I sure hope so, but due to time constraints they played very little into the narrative in the first episode and while I cherish all moments we got with them, I am honestly a bit saddened by that? Gus at least got some extended interactions with Hunter but Willow barely got in more than 2 or 3 sentences.
Idk i just really hope we'll see some more of the two in the next two specials but I am admittedly sceptical (like I am not even sure the Grimwalker elephant in the room will have the time to be adressed)
It's hard to say for certain. I definitely believed they'd have more relevance in Thanks to Them then they ended up having but I'm optimistic nonetheless. I was wondering lately if it was even necessary to have Willow and Gus get trapped in the Human Realm with the other characters at all since they didn't really add anything to the plot. (Not that I didn't enjoy seeing them. Immensely. I will feast off this content for months.)
But then I remember how this season was unfairly shortened and I'm a little more understanding. I think there was a lot more planned for them character-wise but a lot of stuff had to be cut for time.
I think, considering the series is coming to a close, the crew will be kind enough to give every prominent character a proper send off. And though Willow and Gus were admittedly sidelined a good bit during patches of this series, I think episodes such as ASIAS and LR are hopeful reminders that they haven't been forgotten by the narrative. They were major players in this show from episode 3.
I'm not good at predictions. I haven't a fucking clue what's going to happen in For the Future. I don't even know where the kids are gonna end up on the other side of that portal.
But I do have one hope.
I don't believe the grimwalker reveal will be forgotten altogether. I don't think they'd remind all of us this secret existed in Luz and Hunter's bathroom scene if it wasn't going to go anywhere. Time is precious in these specials, after all. They have a lot to establish. And considering the hints that Gus already knows, and Willow seemed shocked and confused when Luz blurted it out, I definitely believe that Hunter, Gus and Willow will get their friendship moment. Cuz like. They know now. But just like Luz and Amity, they need a moment to ask why Hunter kept it from them.
But anyway my main hope for the episode is that Luz and Hunter, the main insperable duo of the first special, split for Special 2 to take care of their own respective business. Luz has to find Eda and King and all that business while Hunter is out for blood. He also needs answers. He needs to learn the truth about Caleb and Evelyn. And I'm hoping that Willow and Gus will be his companions in this subplot. After all, they nearly lost him once. I don't think they're letting him out of their sight again. If there's one thing Willow and Gus seemed determined to do, it's keep Hunter safe.
(Also it might have just been a joke but Willow's last line "We'll be back once we get some revenge :)" or something similar. Now I KNOW Belos is Hunter's target so I like to think she has every intention of making ending his life her business too.)
