Hello! I've noticed that you call your blogging about academia "ivory tower blogging". I'm in academia too, so I understand what it means. But what do think about this metaphor of academia as an ivory tower?

Hmm, it's honestly pretty complicated, and the tag was meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek. Also, my perspective on it definitely comes from my post-bachelor degree academic life mainly revolving around literary criticism and creative writing (in the academic context), so I can't speak for physicists or whatever.

On the one hand, I think the metaphor/concept is rooted in the perception of academics as well-off elites whose lives and understanding of the world are divorced from ordinary life, which is (funnily in a way) a stereotype that is, well, divorced from how many academics actually live. At least in my country, the USA, many people in academia live below the poverty line and are exploited by both our institutions and sometimes our own students, with the former expecting us to do a ton of unpaid or underpaid work out of vocational zeal (if you aren't willing to accept and participate in exploitative labor practices, do you really love your work? 🤔) and students often regarding us as glorified grading automatons.

And I do think that separation between the ivory tower concept of academic life and the actual experience of many academics is influenced by contemporary anti-intellectualism passing as anti-elitism, where a lot of people will shrug off academic knowledge and experience as cut off from real life and insist academics are ignorant about or disinterested in others' lives, but that very belief depends on ... well, ignorance about or disinterest in academics' actual lives vs convenient stereotypes.

So there's that, and wrt lit-crit and creative writing particularly, there's also this sense that it's especially divorced from RL because what we know about isn't important in "the real world," or at least expertise in it isn't particularly valuable, and what we do could be done by anyone and there's no need for, say, intellectual rigor, specialized vocabulary, or discipline-specific discourse—those are just gatekeeping, actually! Either our real value is simply in teaching (esp teaching composition, since that tends to be directly applicable to other fields that lead to Real Jobs) or we don't have any value at all, and scholars in English studies shouldn't be eligible for tenure, or maybe for employment at all, since maybe English departments should just be abolished altogether.

All of that said, are there some academics who basically live the stereotype? Sure. And I do think that some theoretical approaches get so caught up in layers of theorizing (usually involving things they are not experts in) that they lose sight of both the texts they're looking at or writing and ... uh, how most people read.

This is one of my gripes with Death of the Author and related concepts like the intentional fallacy, in fact.

I think it is a way to read a text, and I do find it deeply annoying when creators demand that their stated intentions, interviews, social media pronouncements, unrelated other work, etc be taken into account by all audiences. But I also think the treatment of DOTA as itself canonical and the only proper way to read is a) not how literary theory should work in the first place and b) so divorced from how most readers actually engage with that kind of context that it can edge over the line into feeling like we're pretending that stuff has no impact when most of the time it very evidently does, which feels very "ivory tower" to me. I think most readers actually do care about the author's intentions and personal character to some extent and if they happen across knowledge of it, their takes will be influenced by it, and that's actually a perfectly acceptable way to engage, even if I personally find "the purposed domination of the author" grating.

Also, there's a lot of academia-as-activism that can run into similar pitfalls as fandom-as-activism, honestly. You'll get literary critics and/or theorists having these jargon-ridden Important Conversations about [thing in a text] and connecting it, sometimes tenuously, to [broader issue] and acting like that's activism, but if nobody except other literary critics who are specifically into your theory or niche specialty can even understand what you're saying, much less act on it, how much are you really contributing to substantive change?

I mean, this actually reminds me of an article my upper-division English students were discussing not long ago, in which Susan S. Lanser says:

It is worth asking ourselves why some of the most radical feminist theory is being produced in a language inaccessible to some of the most radical feminist activists. The turn toward a wider audience seems to me crucial for a critical literary feminism that could take part in a world-wide intellectual movement for social change.

The article is "Feminist Literary Criticism: How Feminist? How Literary? How Critical?" from vol. 3, issue no. 1 of the NWSA Journal—that was in 1991. And yet, well, I do think it continues to be an issue, though there's been more value for clarity in recent years IMO. And then you've got the effects of paywalls and inaccessibility and so forth. I know I'm able to share more information with more people via Tumblr (even though it's not exactly the hub of the 2022 Internet and I'm no BNF) than I will probably ever be in a position to do in academia.

So I don't think the stereotype is entirely baseless, just enormously exaggerated in the service of anti-intellectualism in a deeply hypocritical way. But there's enough there that I find "the ivory tower" as a concept not entirely invalid or a thing that should be wholesale rejected or whatnot, so I don't mind using it in the way that I am.

i actually did think you didn't like sam and cas for the longest time, but it's more than your bias for dean is evident. it took awhile to see through that and understand you are coming at sam and cas out of love and in a fun way and just happen to like dean more. there are a lot of other blogs that make digs at characters (esp sam and cas) in a NOT fun way, but pretend they "love all of TFW" and that's on me for lumping you in with them.

You know Anon, back when I used to post absolutely NOTHING except for memes, and also had a Sam banner and icon, someone asked me who my favorite character was, and I made it a poll because I was curious how good of a job I was doing keeping my content even. Lo and behold—they chose in order by vote percentage:

Cas

Dean

Jack

Then as the poll has stayed up ever since, I think Dean and Cas have traded places in the voting (but by now everyone knows Dean is my favorite). But a very large percentage of people did not know Dean was my favorite starting out. I was surprised, because I do indeed love Dean very VERY much. It isn't that I don't like Sam and Cas—but to me, Dean is possibly one of the greatest characters of all time. I could not possibly put into words how much I enjoy his character and all of the reasons why he's touched my heart. There is just no one out there quite like him in my mind. I think my bias for Dean has come through more in recent times—especially since the finale, because I miss him very much and his shitty death gutted (DON'T) me.

I think watching the show, when you look at the story only through one characters' lens, it's very easy to resent the others for not being perfect friends/family/brothers. I have even seen someone voice the sentiment before, "To some degree, to love Sam is to hate Dean, and to hate Dean is to love Sam" (paraphrasing). The thing is, when you genuinely look at your favorite (whether that's Dean or Sam or Cas) and look at their motivations and feelings and actions, it's clear that they love each other very much. That's an unavoidable fact in my mind. Both the best and worst things they've done have been at least partially motivated by the love they have for one another. I cannot, ultimately, dislike Sam or Cas knowing how much Dean loves them. To hate them would be to hate a part of Dean that is innate to who he is—his love for his family—and the choices and sacrifices he has made due to that love. It would be to say that there is something broken inside him that makes him unable to make the right choices about who should and should not be in his life. It would be to say that the foundation of the show, at the center of which is Dean's heart and how people around him are pulled inside of its orbit, is something tainted and unworthy.

It would also be to say that Dean's mistakes are okay and theirs are not, because you will find countless parallel events and threads tying their different actions together in ways that are different but also are often very much the same, if you get their motivations.

I think, for every stan out there of any main character... it would be a good idea to watch through the show trying to see it through a lens besides that of your favorite. I did this with Sam, and I am currently doing a rewatch where one of the goals is to focus on Cas's point of view more. Nothing can give you greater compassion and understanding than trying to step inside someone else's shoes, and having done this is one of the primary reasons I can't bring myself to follow many SPN accounts I have come across on Tumblr, because resentment runs rampant in many places, over characters or ships, and I don't care for that negativity. It's also the primary reason I started this blog to begin with. I wanted to carve out a positive space, where I didn't completely refuse to engage with the characters flaws (god knows fandom won't shut up about them anyway), but a place where I pointed out their flaws only to say those flaws are okay, don't make any one of them more unworthy of love than any of the others. Those flaws (at least—the ones I agree exist... there's a lot of flaws attributed to Sam, Dean, and Cas that I don't agree with at all) are what makes them human (err... or angel, respectively). I am not interested in Mary Sues (and I am definitely not interested in fans who sand down characters into Mary Sues to escape any semblance of their favorite being "problematic"). Just show me why they make the choices they do, even when those choices are broken, and I'm compassionate and I'm fascinated. I dare anyone to do better than the characters did with the cards they were dealt—with the lives they lived.

I can't say I've had the same experience on Tumblr as you with blogs pretending to like Sam and Cas while having a clear bias for Dean... I've tended to see quite a lot more of the opposite or worse. There are, after all, several blogs dedicated to absolutely nothing except trying to spread outright hate for Dean, and there was a time not long ago that you could not even go in the Dean tag without seeing countless ugly posts spewing vitriol about him (that has faded significantly since the show ended). But I think we're all bound to be most wise to the bias against our favorites (hell—I have picked up on someone's dislike of Dean from a gif blog before... and it was later confirmed that I was right). This is also part of what feeds the culture of anti-ism in the fanbase. People watched these characters for 12-15 years, and they latched onto one of them, and they know that character, and in many cases find identity and comfort with that character, and they see that character accused of terrible things that really aren't accurate at all, and the kind of innate human response to that is to want to do the opposite—hate their favorite because they hate yours. I think it's clear that that isn't what we're really supposed to get out of SPN. I don't think the intended narrative is that Dean hates Cas or Sam or that Sam hates Dean or that any one of them is unworthy of love and acceptance or is perfect or is too flawed. People can choose the narratives they want, but I'll continue vehemently disagreeing with them and making fun of them with the tag #don't feed the stans after midnight.

I’ve seen so much shit go down these past few days and I really don’t need stuff like that at the end of this fucked year. I’ve been talking back and forth with mutuals over the last several days, I’ve seen the mess unfold on Twitter, people came to my inbox to ask what was happening.

Yet I didn’t want to give this unsubstantiated, rather silly and exaggerated accusations room on my blog. I hoped it would die down. I’m also only lurking on Twitter and IG and would never get involved with fandom there cause those sites stress me out.

This whole mess also made me enormously angry so I needed time to calm down.

Now I only like to say a few things and then I hope I can be done with this.

I think this whole shit show is a perfect example for the dark side of social media, how things get inflated, facts messed up and allegations thrown around. It shows that for a lot of people it’s all about performative behavior. I doubt these accusations would’ve been aired if it had been John Smith from next door who behaved badly. I’m also shocked by a culture that completely disregards facts and proof and judges entirely emotional. Where’s your brain, people?

Of course, you never know with celebs, but the balance of probability still applies to them as well. Someone against no other complains have ever surfaced, who loves his mum and sis, talks very respectful of female colleagues and even donated his salary to an anti-sexual violence charity must truly be rather cunning to be a secret abuser.

When there are allegations of sexual misconduct, you should believe the ‘victim’. Okay, I’m totally with that. But that ‘victim’ doesn’t have to give you any proof for anything they accuse another person off, probably destroying their livelyhood with just a few words? Not even a coherent account of what they’re accusing someone off? Like, what the fuck??? Are people out of their minds?

If you choose to go public with heavy allegations, of course you have to give some facts of what happened to you. Not sordid details but facts that can confirm and explain what you’re hinting at. Like a date, proof you were where you said you were, or a general outline of what happened so other people can comprehed and consider if your allegations are believable. Because we’re all aware of false allegations esp against celebs. We’re also all aware that this is usually no fun for the alleged ‘victim’. So it’s for their own safety and integrity that they have to share some facts. Esp in a case where the allegations started vague with ‘bad experience’, then morphed into ‘sexual assault’, to end up as ‘harassment’ or ‘attempted sexual misconduct’. If you accuse someone of these offences you have to give at least some facts as to what transpired. Otherwise those big words are baseless which doesn’t mean they won’t do harm to both the accuser and the accused.

I believe a ‘victim’ if they have some sort of proof for what they say they were subjected to or can at least give a consistent account of what happened. To describe yourself as a ‘victim’, something objectively harming has had to have happened to you. Sorry, but otherwise it all frays out into a subjective feeling of discomfort, which then is on you and on no one else.

Without some details, simply nothing happened and all this is a storm in a tea cup.

No one forced the people who brought these allegations up to post on social media. They said nothing physical happened and they don’t want to press charges. Why did they even post it then? To warn other women? But to warn someone you have to tell them what you’re warning them about. Did they want to cut Tim down a nodge? Did they want attention and clout? Were they still angry and just wanted to vent? Whatever, social media is not the best place to work through trauma. Get a therapist or a councelor or a lawyer. But just putting unsubstantiated accusations out there is the worst way for everyone involved.

There is no proof this person ever even met Tim. There is no proof anything happened between them. Not that I don’t believe them that he acted like a douche, but if it’s just their word and no proof for anything or details are needed even I could claim the same this woman does (and I have proof I ‘met’ him twice). So you see where this ‘believe the victim’ leads us. Nowhere. The ‘victim’ has at least to proof that there was possible victimisation.

I get it, the girl who met Tim presumably at a party during HSN filming had experienced some form of sexual abuse in high school (her post from 2018 was not about any celebrity afaik but about a guy she went to high school with. I’ve also never seen proof that she accused any other celeb. This was Twitter running amok imo). As nothing physical happened between her and Tim, I assume he said something to her that made her uncomfortable.

He was 19, maybe drunk/high. She was a bit older. He chatted her up, she said no. He backed off but might have said something nasty.

I’m not denying this could’ve happened. But that is life, not assault. It can make you angry and you might post about this incident to show he’s a douche. But label this sexual assault or sexual misconduct? We don’t live in a perfect world. She didn’t feel threatened or violated, just uncomfortable. But of course sexual assault gives you more clout than telling the story of a 19yo wannabe Hollywood star hitting on you and then getting pissy when you turned him down. I mean, water is wet, right? But assault? Misconduct? Harassment? Now you’re talking...

Maybe the incident was more traumatizing to her than it would have been to other people because of her previous experience in high school. We don’t know. As she doesn’t say what happened, we can’t make up our minds. Which doesn’t stop people from throwing all kinds of shit around.

But, please, a guy saying some shit to you isn’t the same as a guy raping you. Is there no awareness of nuance anymore? Have you all gone mad? Yes, trauma differs for everyone, but come on. Men shouldn’t behave vile against women, but there’s still a difference between verbal insults and physical assault. Nobody is perfect and those without sin cast the first stone.

I’m sure this wasn’t Tim’s finest hour. If she’d just said what happened we could all have handled this better.

But Tim’s not a Kevin Spacey ffs.

I know we’re all bored out of our minds. But can we please keep a sense of proportion here? Stop leveling everything to look woke. It’s insulting to real survivors.

Tim is not a predatory rapist and that woman is not a pathological liar out to destroy celebs. The truth lies in between and for sure is much more pathetic, petty and boring.

This MH Shipper Tho...

So last week I made a post about how Haru gets sentimental when around Rin which I had originally posted to Reddit (before I got my Tumblr account). It wasn't too popular on Reddit as there are many more MH shippers there than RinHaru shippers, which is totally fine; I didn’t care about the post being popular (I figured it wouldn’t be), I really just wanted to share my thoughts and love about RinHaru with the world. 😁💜🌸

The rules of the subreddit clearly specify "No Hate Comments" and "No Ship Bashing." If you read my post, even on the Tumblr version I don't even mention any other ship and certainly don't hate on any other ship. It was merely an appreciation post of RinHaru that discussed how Haru gets especially sentimental when around Rin.

I literally wrote this disclaimer in my original post:

Disclaimer: This isn't an anti-Mako//Haru post but it is an anti-Mako//Haru shippers who are immature, hateful and hilariously insecure about their ship. This isn’t towards all Mako//Haru shippers, esp those lovely and chill ones. To those I send my love (because I appreciate y’all and also love my big squish Makoto 💚).

So this afternoon I get a notification that I have a comment on my Reddit post:

I didn't want to just assume this person was a Mako//Haru shipper, because they could've been an anti-shipper in general, so I checked out their profile first because I like confirming things rather than jumping to conclusions and making assumptions.

But sure enough:

OMG ahahaha y’all this person was so triggered by my post—a post that had absolutely no hate towards Makoto nor Mako//Haru—that they made not only one, but TWO posts that broke community rules by ship hating because of it. AND those two posts were the only posts they ever made on Reddit, ever. 😂

Literally, all my original post did was give some rare RinHaru appreciation in the subreddit. And the post was even tagged as “Shipping” and had RinHaru in the title. And still this person willingly clicked on it knowing it was a ship post about their notp smh.

Even in my response to them, I didn't hate on any ship. Yet even then, they're still mad and then try to turn the blame onto me:

Imagine being so insecure and overly sensitive about your ship that the very appreciation of a different ship, one that never invalidates your otp nor Makoto, triggers you that hard. Lol YIKES.

Needless to say, both of their posts were removed for breaking the rules of the subreddit.

Here’s the thing: I’m new to the Free! fandom so I wasn’t here when the ship wars were at their worst. So when I come across all of the Rin and RinHaru hate when I dive into fandom posts, it hits me like if it was new, because no matter how long ago it was, it’s still hate. Hate that still crops up today, which I see frequently on other areas of the internet.

I tend to write a lot of “posts” addressing this hate or defending RinHaru, but it was originally just for myself and my private blog/diary. Now that I have tumblr, I’ve debated many times whether or not to publish these defenses of RinHaru since the ship wars aren’t nearly as bad as they were before, and a I’m sure a lot of the haters have moved on to (hopefully) better things. Yet every time I feel like maybe its unnecessary to write these long meta posts about RinHaru or posts that address hate coming from mh shippers, I run into something like this, either on YouTube or apparently now Reddit (even though it's against the rules).

So you know what, I’m not gonna feel bad about addressing RinHaru hate anymore, even if it's from the past because it still goes on today. Also, I know how hard it is to see the hate as a new fan, and seeing people defend Rin and RinHaru is always comforting. Hopefully it’s comforting to others, too.

Anyways, pseudo-venting sesh over.

(updated with evidence) Here I would like to open a discussion. Yixing posted a biased view. I hope you all can help reblog this spread the other side of the story.

I am not here to bash his values talents hard work personality. This is a political mass manipulation situation, something much bigger than 'fan wars/ kpop c pop idols matters'

This post has elements: shame on Hong Kong protesters for their violence, ignore the core purpose of the protest, support Hong Kong police, and the message it gives is that Hong Kong is part of China and should obey them. (protest is ongoing to go against passing a policy that is pro-china communists)

Firstly, protesters are NOW mad at Hong Kong police force and Hong Kong governmennt, NOT the china government. The campaign where many idols are using is ‘Hong Kong is part of China’.

YES HK IS PART OF CHINA, but the contract is ONE COUNTRY TWO SYSTEMS for 50 years after 1997. HK is not asking for independence. Yixing’s post already mislead the mass because HK protest does not directly go against China, protest is against HK’s own police and government system.

I am here to clarify, Hong Kong protesters primarily are not rioters. They did not inflict violence for fun or on innocent citizens and more harm has been inflicted on protesters AND even innocent citizens due to Hong Kong Police force's irresponsible AND undisciplined use of weapons.

There are rules and regulations for all defence arms police utilize to endure the safety for police AND all citizen. But the police has demonstrated unreasonable use of that and took everything too far.

- 2 million people walked the streets in a peaceful manner. A group of people surrounded a government building, shouted slogan, and pushed a few fence (didn't break glass or anything) yet the government ignored all our voices and labelled the event as Riot.

- Hong Kong Police are now under very serious speculation of collaborating with Hong Kong triads to spread terrors against citizens. There was an indiscriminate terror beating attack of protesters AND innocent commuters in a train station. Videos of mob members CHASING after politically neutral reporters and a PREGNANT LADY was filmed. Police stationed not far away DID NOT ARRIVE until 45 minutes after the incidence. Some police also by-stood near the scene. They closed the gate enclosing the mob with the innocent and stopped the train. The police did not apologize and only claimed they were 'inefficient'

and it is actually common knowledge for generations that police force communicate and have ties with HK triads to strike a balance in the society.

- multiple tear gas bombs were released indoor at a train station This will bring serious biological damage to any citizen inside the station. Tear gas MUST NOT be released indoors as it can cause DEATH esp children and elderly. Tear gas also got thrown to an elderly home too before indoor incidence too.

- Police has used EXPIRED tear gas bombs against citizens which means the harm it does to the body doubles. This should be illegal and can cause DEATH.

- police has also fired tear gas bombs to the press and first aid team before.

- Medical staff also demonstrated protest, because as medical professionals with their knowledge, they know these methods will cause serious injuries and even death to citizens. They labelled this as ‘police attempt murder’

- Pepper guns were shot multiple times at a distance less than 1 m away, and aimed at citizen's head, EVEN when the citizens was amongst a crowd that is RUNNING AWAY, and not inflicting violence on the police force. Any non bullet guns should not aim at the head.

- gang beatings are witnessed to protesters who has surrendered to arrest and begged for police to stop. Has front teeth has been knocked out, he shouted sorry, accepted the arrest yet this still happened.

- HK police even went as far as arresting a kid who bought laser pointers commonly used for stargazin and accused him of purchasing weapons against police. The laser won’t cause blindness and it is a leal item to buy in HK

I am NOT saying protesters’ violence should be accepted and the police 100% to blame. But IT HURTS WHEN yixing convinces his fans on ig, an international social platform to blindly support

POLICE FORCE that frames its own citizens of violence / allow triads to brutally beat innocent citizens up, then refuse to form an investigation committee or apologize / disguise as protesters to cause violence and conflicts / use irregulated and even illegal dangerous methods that can cause death / engage in acts of humiliation, gang beatings of unarmed protesters

then put all the blames for the unpeace in HK on the protesters.

i am NOT angry or hating on yixing. As a chinese, I understand he must post what he did because CHINA COMMUNISM CONSPIRACIES ARE REAL. they can destroy anyone’s careers and lives using corrupted method and propaganda if anyone doesn’t obey or show support to their ideals. Thats why hk idols who develop their careers in china are all supporting anti HK protest campaign, to manipulate the masses.

Please I want to provide the other side of the story because fans always eat things up without researching.

Anyone who’s been to Vegas knows that it’s so bright, everywhere, that there are no shadows. The same goes for our Shadows -- for a city more or less openly run by the Mob (or rather, three Mobs, more on that later), there’s no reasons for criminals to hide. That tells you most of what you need to know about Vegas. The following saying tells you the rest:

“To call Las Vegas ‘Sin City’ is an insult. Not to the City, but to Sin.”

Yes, yes, there’s gambling. There’s gambling everywhere -- the kind you find in the bright lights of the Core is just the meatspace version of the countless Matrix sites. But in Vegas you can gamble on *anything*. Your smoky OTB down the street is nothing compared to the intestine-inverting stench of the underground troll on dwarf death-matches that happen at derelict warehouses in North Las Vegas.

Yes, yes, there’s prostitution, which is the fancy Anglo word for “whores”. It’s been legal here so long it’s blase -- but remember that Vegas gets regular visitors from all around the world, and everybody has a different itch that can be scratched for a price. Like blondes? Come on, too easy. Blonde teenage ork teens? A dozen geriatric troll men? A cockatrice? Anything for a price.

50 ¥, Grandpa. For 75 ¥, the wife can watch.

Which is the real reason people like you and me come to Vegas -- anything can be bought and sold for a price. The desert around Vegas is a prime stopover on smuggling routes between Los Angeles (and the rest of the California Free State) up through Ute to Denver, and from there to the rest of North America. Chips, drugs, guns, slaves, telesma -- you can always find something if you know the right people. Right now the commodity of choice? Water. The Ute’s a desert, folks.

A lot of people (who skipped history in high school) think Vegas is like Seattle or Denver -- an independent or UCAS enclave that was carved out after the Great Ghost Dance. It’s actually full-on Ute territory, it’s just that the Indians knew that Vegas was never going to change and didn’t even try to eject the Anglos and take over. So, the Ute security force keeps a wide perimeter around the city, and basically allows it to keep rotting from within. Poisoned land, some of their shamans say -- best to let the infection run its course, then come back later and rebuild on the scab.

The real reason is much simpler -- money.

Both legal and illegal business account for a majority of the Ute’s tax base. When you next buy your ticket to Vegas (or if you’re feeling adventurous, buying a permit to drive in), zoom in on the various extra fees that get slapped on it -- one of them will be for a temporary tourist visa that lets you stay in the country. Every time you slot your credstick to get another drink, sales tax makes its way back up to Provo, and odds are every roll of the loaded dice can put the last of your nuyen into the fur-lined pockets of the Comanche Mob.

Crime

So, let’s talk about crime.

There’s the Mob, the Triclops, the three “I”s -- the Italians (Verontesse family), the Irish (Wynne family) and the Indians (Comanche tribe) -- who are the biggest players: they control the Strip and every activity, legitimate or otherwise, contained within. They work hard to keep their cash cow bright, clean, and tourist friendly -- any settling of vendettas must be done *quietly* or risk bringing down the wrath of all families (an excellent source of shadow work, by the way). I know some of you runners try to avoid mob runs, to avoid the risk of getting caught under the thumb of the local capo, but in Vegas, it is impossible to avoid their influence. Any bit of shadow biz involves the Mob in some way, so you might as well calm down and accept it.

The Yakuza are a solid, yet distant, second place when it comes to organized crime in Vegas, despite their best efforts to drive a wedge between the mob families. Other than the large casinos, the yaks dabble in everything, and it’s not too hard to find a discrete agent working any given block of the Strip.

Beyond that, it’s a smorgasbord of everyone else: the Triads (Chinese), Seoulpa Rings (Korean), and every type of gang and low-life you can imagine. Which reminds me...

Corps

The smarmy side of me is complaining that, in covering criminals, I have yet to cover the megacorps in Vegas.

Har har har.

More true than usual in Vegas, though -- the largest corps in terms of gross earnings and personnel run the casinos: The Flamingo Casino Group (owned by the Verontesse Mafia), the Wynne Conglomerate (Wynne family) and the Wind Speaker Corporation (owned by the Comanche Mob). None of them are multi-national (and are thus unranked by the Corporate Court), but since they only operate in Ute (Vegas and Reno), they can throw down with any other megacorp in town.

The only big boys (AAA ranked) in town with an auspicious presence are Aztechnology and Renraku. The Azzies are rumored to own the Luxor pyramid casino (along with rumors of blood sacrifices on the roof) and have their Ute HQ downtown (unique among the megas, who if they are allowed to do business in Ute, have to stay in Provo). Renraku performs a critical function in Vegas -- they are the primary supplier of gambling machine hardware and software. Yes, the mob runs the casinos, but they must buy their machines from Renraku.

Fuchi: Virtual Meetings Inc. (telepresence), Fuchi Simsense Studios

Mitsuhama: Sakura Studios (simsense), Black Lotus (software)

Shiawase: Shiawase Atomics Southwest (nuclear power)

A summary of the rest of the worst, along with their ranking and primary area of business:

Buce Talent (unranked, entertainment) – who helps book of those acts? They do.

ESP Systems (A, simsense) – based in Chicago, solid presence in Vegas

Istus International (A, real estate) – an up and comer, recently constructed HQ in Vegas

Lone Star (AA, private security) – they’re not the “cops” though, more on that later

UNLV (unranked, education) – they incorporated back in the 20s as a for-profit university

The above is by no means complete – but if you’re hired for some local shadow biz, and it isn’t through the syndicates, it’s likely through one of them. If not, it’s likely through the…

Las Vegas City Government

Spend a day in Vegas and it’s easy to forget that you’re technically a temporary visitor to the Ute Nation – remember the Ute is basically defined by their anti-Anglo sentiment – but if you look closely at the logos on the Strip Panicbuttons, you’ll see the LVCG. Depending on your viewpoint, the LVCG is either the token gesture to Ute Nation membership or just another branch of the Comanche Mob. Either way, no one gets elected to a LVCG position without approval from Provo.

The only respectable aspect (IMHO) of the LVCG is that they resisted corporate takeover of their law enforcement (Lone Star and Knight Errant stand poised to take over, should something change), so the other sign of the LVCG you’ll see is the Metropolitan Police (MetroPol for short, MP for shorter, the latter also a dig at their somewhat militant response in some cases). The MetroPol do a good job at keeping law & order on the Strip (anything else would be bad business), in exchange for that the mobs let the MPs make a token bust to show to the public that the casinos are “clean”.

Beyond the Strip

That said, MetroPol really only cares about keeping clean the pieces of Vegas that bring in money. While technically having jurisdiction over the entire city, you’ll see Halley’s Comet before you see an MP on patrol north of the city. Highway Patrol is the roughest division, as they form the front-line troops keeping the rabble from encroaching in the city. When they do venture off the interstate, it is only in armored vehicles and full riot gear.

It’s not really as bad as you might think, it only seems that way compared to the sterile streets of the Strip only a few miles away. Some areas of interest:

Chinatown (Spring Mountain & Red Rock) – center of Triad activity (natch) in Vegas.

Koreatown (Spring Valley & Rainbow) -- center of Seoulpa Ring activity in Vegas. Also borders Chinatown, meaning that border is a Triad/Ring battleground.

Henderson – corp burb, has experienced huge expansion in the past five years. All shades of high class, so dress like you belong. Middle to high class residential.

North Las Vegas Barrens – ‘nuff said. Most of you probably live here, so I won’t say more.

Enterprise/Spring Valley/Summerlin – if not in the Barrens, that means you’re a moderately successful runner/mobster and live here. Middle to low class residential. Boring.

Paradise – Just east of The Strip and just north of the airport, this area is home to UNLV, some up and coming nightclubs, and a good chunk of the Vegas magical community. Home to the only Vegas Wiz-Kid gang.

Boulder City – a Ute city, gambling free, meaning this is the effective southern border of the Vegas sprawl. Ute military patrols out of here, so watch your step folks.

Ute Air Station (formerly Nellis Air Force Base) -- the effective northern border of the Vegas sprawl. Ute military patrols out of here too, though UAS duty isn’t the most sought after (most injun flyboys prefer the former Hill AF Base near Salt Lake), and as a result have a permanent bad attitude. And by “bad attitude”, we mean would rather geek you than talk to you, given any excuse.

Getting in and out…

…by Air:

99% of visitors to Vegas come through McCarren International Airport. Nominally owned by the Ute government, its day to day operations are governed by a consortium of local corps (the mob, the megas, etc.). Security is typical for a North American airport, which is lower than you might expect. There are a few other places to land a plane in Vegas – there is a private airport in Henderson that caters exclusively to corp traffic (really, anyone with enough money can use the facilities). There is a similarly sized airfield in North Las Vegas, though regular air traffic left it years ago as the area degraded into the hellhole it is today. However, you still find the occasional black market panzer or VSTOL sneaking in at night.

And, of course, there’s the UAS, which keeps a pretty tight radar net around the area (one thing they actually can do fairly well). You can sneak in some unscheduled chopper flights within the city without a flight plan (or a bogus one) – what is Vegas without some spontaneity? – but try to make a break to the Hoover Dam and you might end up as target practice for the UAS SAM batteries.

…by Land:

Since the rest of the Ute nation uniformly despises the people of Vegas, and Vegas is surrounded on all sides by Ute territory, road traffic is discouraged, to say the least. Few locals stop, but some drive through. You get a few more visitors that come from Cal Free through Ute, though they better be tribal or rich enough to bribe your way through. I-15 is the major thoroughfare in this regard – north to Provo, Salt Lake, and points beyond, south to Cal Free. Route 93 is the other road that cuts through the city, though not quite as active (who wants to go to Reno anyway?). The bulk of traffic heading in and out of the city are freight vehicles (and most unmanned and remotely controlled, which has led to some interesting encounters from bands of North Las Vegas ruffians); this includes the heavy rail lines running through town.

…Illegitimately:

Which is, honestly, probably what you were interested in in the first place, and, natch, is going to depend upon your resources and level of desperation.

What not to try – being a stowaway.

Ute is paranoid about Anglos sneaking in and retaking over the territory, so they’ve wised up to neo-hobos breaking into open train cars or sneaking into the back of semi cabs. Companies must file manifests for every train and truck passing in and out of Vegas, listing content delivered, content picked up, delivery times, and so on. These are verified by layers of drone sensor systems, both fixed and mobile, at the city boundaries. And for every camera the Utes have on your cargo, there are two guns aimed in case something is up. If you want to smuggle something in by land, make a mob contact with the myriad of trucking companies they control.

What to try – use the airport.

Seriously, the flimsiest of fake identities if usually enough to get you in and out of McCarren; Vegas makes it money through tourism, so as long as you’re not on the UCAS Ten Most Wanted List, expect an easy trip into Vegas (and if you are on the list, you’ll only get an extra pat-down). Somewhat harder to get out (people don’t spend money once they leave), but not that much harder.

Away from the strip and the highways, there is a small and tight-knit panzer community operating out of North Las Vegas, using the surrounding mountains as camouflage in and out. High risk, high reward, and high prices if you want to tag along. That is, if you can find someone willing to talk to you.

Finally, in a worst case-scenario, you can just walk in and out of Vegas – the Ute sensor net, while probably locating you, has bigger problems than a drunk Anglo wandering into the desert and dying of heat stroke. And there are enough hiding places within the mountains that you could make it to Cal Free undetected if you had enough water…

First of all, I really want to thank you for taking the time to answer that question; thank you for clearing up the misinformation and misconceptions that I had. Growing up in a better-off part of BC the only real opinions about the prairie provinces (esp. Alberta) have always been the antagonistic Oil Is Bad They Are Anti-Change Conservatives. It's better then to vote for a party that has a history of raising your concerns than one that antagonises you outright

Hey no worries, this is something I have been struggling to puzzle out for a long time and it’s always nice when someone asks and listens. Like I won’t pretend there’s not problems and there’s not a lot of stupidity going back and forth, it’s just really frustrating when people have these kind of classist or elitist assumptions about... why people get defensive over certain things or how information about it spreads? Or how little people actually pay attention or participate - which i get it, in this post-truth era where people are spending long hours away from each other and are firing memes back and forth over facebook, people aren’t going to participate in government beyond voting. People don’t pay attention to how much gets lost or screwed up in the aftermath of voting because they feel like they’ve participated and no one has the time or the energy to hold the government accountable (but there are people who have sooo much time and energy to defend tightening our belts or why certain people get “enough” online, wild). It’s a vicious cycle of not knowing and sticking to your guns about not knowing and incorporating it into your identity because what else can you do. I’m not saying it’s right, I’m saying that it needs to change and adding fuel to the fire only makes the fire bigger.

And I can speak a little to the BC side of things too since one of my feet is firmly in that camp, my sister kind of ran into the anti-Alberta sentiment and got rubbed the wrong way when she started high school on Vancouver Island, and you get the anti-Alberta sentiment from Saskatchewan too and then we turn around and start slinging stones at people from the East Coast and blah blah blah and British Columbia doesn’t deserve their autonomy because They use Natural Gas and They dump Sewage and They run their Ferries on Fossil Fuels and Did You Know that Vegan Leather Is Just Plastic? And you do get the same sorts of stereotypical hippie dippie west coast sort of people who also aren’t willing to make critical arguments either, that’s true, but that’s not an excuse for neither of us to talk about it. And we’re always kind of awkwardly silent about 1. the conservative interior of bc and 2. the socialist urban centers of the prairies, things that out here in Ontario people are totally unaware of. We have overlapping histories, resources, and people, and we have to acknowledge that whatever happens we will always affect each other.

There’s a joke that Albertans are born in Saskatchewan and die in BC and I think about that a lot. I think a lot about how defensive Albertans are over Alberta even from other people from other provinces who come to work here* and I think a lot about how no one wants to really settle down and retire in Alberta, it’s a place that survives on transient labour that refuses to acknowledge how transient labour negatively affects the things and especially the people around it. TMX contributes nothing to our economy and yet it’s become this symbol of our suffocation by the rest of the country and in our own desperation we’re trying to sacrifice our neighbour’s autonomy and livelihood for our own and it’s not fair for either of us in the end... but how do we open up the conversation? I’m not sure yet. But thank you for having it with me.

So we had this very same argument more than a year ago, and it looks like neither of our viewpoints has changed so I’m not sure what good this will do, but you have a lot of influence in the TW fandom yourself, esp in corners I won’t go into, so I’m gonna try.

Please, for the love of god, stop mitigating abuse with abuse apologism arguments in defense of characters. That is what you are doing, and I will not let you pretend otherwise because you are putting textbook abuse apologism on paper, time and time again, while calling out abuse in other aspects of canon. And this dichotomy means all those who believe you and accept your POV when you point out abuse in one instance are equally inclined to believe you when you point to where Derek Hale abused various characters and say ‘not abuse, because he was a victim himself, he had good intentions, and other characters did way worse.’

All of those last three things are true. None of them actually alter his actions. None of them are mutually exclusive with abuse.

You can not look at abuse through the POV of the abuser. You can not do it. You have to look at it through the lens of the person being abused, because they are the one that needs defending, they are the one the harm was done to.

So when Derek beat the crap out of Scott in the ice rink in Season 2, does the fact that Derek was abused himself magically change the harm done to Scott? You could write essays about how Derek’s life experiences led to him making the choices that told him it was a good idea to beat up Scott in front of his newly minted pack, and a lot of what you have to write might be true and valid. But will any of that, in terms of Scott, change the reality of what Derek did there and how it would contribute to shaping his own life experiences and perception of reality? NOPE.

If I abuse a teenager, as a grown adult, I don’t get to point to my own childhood abuse and say ‘okay but its not that bad because look what happened to meeeeeeeeeeeeee.’ Yeah that shit may be terrible, but so is abusing a teenager. The one does not give you a pass for the other. The one may inform the other, but it doesn’t give you freedom to keep perpetuating the cycle and constantly passing the buck down the line. It might all be true, but explanation DOES NOT EQUAL EXCUSE.

You can point to Derek’s training with Scott, and with Isaac and with Erica and Boyd and say ‘well he had good intentions. He was trying to toughen them up, teach them to survive, and he was doing it the best way he knew how.’ Again, all of that may be true. Its all still irrelevant to the simple question of: did he use his position of greater power, knowledge and experience to harm them, while telling them it was for their own good?

The only thing that matters in determining if it was abuse is if the answer to that question is yes or no.

Every time Scott reacted to Derek’s hurting him during training in S1 with shock, anger and pain - its because he didn’t know Derek was going to do that. Asking someone more experienced than you for help isn’t giving them permission carte blanche to do whatever the hell they want to. Breaking Isaac’s arm to make a point is still breaking Isaac’s arm, no matter what the point is.

And it doesn’t matter that Derek thought he was doing it to make them stronger, better able to survive. It doesn’t even matter that the beta trio wouldn’t have even needed that ‘training’ if Derek hadn’t recruited them to begin with. It doesn’t even matter that every season post S3 showed us DEREK realizing his own earlier methods had been fucked up and even saying as much to the Alpha twins and to Liam when training and advising them.

All that matters is Scott, Erica, Isaac and Boyd looked to Derek for advice and guidance and help, and Derek delivered that to them in the form of pain and said that’s the best you’re going to get, learn to deal with it, this is your life now.

I can’t even tell you how horrifying this particular line of thought is to me given how much those exact words or a near paraphrasing of them shows up in the trial arguments of every father caught abusing his son and saying ‘it was for his own good, brat needed to be tougher, its a cruel world I’m preparing him for.’

When Derek was ‘merely’ an accessory to what Peter did to Scott in the locker room, when Derek used what he knew (or at least strongly suspected) to be a lie about a werewolf cure to manipulate Scott into helping him, when Derek scared the shit out of Scott in the parking garage and broke his phone - you can point to all of that and say, okay but every other character has done way worse.

And? Your point is?

It is never okay to distract from or explain away harm or culpability in causing harm by pointing wildly around the room and saying ‘well everyone else does it too.’

Again. Might be true. Does not change the fact that harm was still done.

Despite what I just said there, I’m going to indulge that ‘everyone on this show does just as bad’ argument for a second. Let’s bring it back around to Scott. Aka the one character I stan for more than any other.

Let’s bring it back to that scene anti-Scott people love to bring up any time Stiles or Derek or someone else is criticized for hurting other characters.

The scene I hate more than any other, where Scott throws Isaac into the wall of his house in response to learning Isaac wants to date his ex girlfriend. When an alpha reacts violently to his abuse survivor beta saying something he doesn’t want to hear.

I loathe that scene so much, because I full on do not believe that is something Scott would do, I do not believe it made sense for his character, I do not believe it fits any characterization he’s received prior or since, to have him portrayed, even for an instant as ‘an alpha reacting violently to his abuse survivor beta simply saying something he does not want to hear.’

But no matter how much I hate it, or how much I don’t think that fit Scott, you will never ever catch me saying that ‘an abuse survivor beta being thrown into a wall for saying something his alpha doesn’t want to hear’ isn’t a description of an abusive scene, that it isn’t gross and awful and should not be excused.

The reason I can still comfortably stan for Scott and refuse to see him as abusive all while still calling out the actions of characters like Stiles and Derek as abusive is I recognize that the actions of any character on this show must be evaluated on two levels. Through the lens of that character’s characterization, and through the lens of how the writers are choosing to write that character in any given moment. These are fictional characters, yes. Which means they can only say and do what the writers write for them in any particular scene, unlike in real life, where a person throwing another into a wall is solely that person’s responsibility.

But by differentiating my focus, I can do both, I can hold the scene up as something awful and something that I do not need to defend Scott for and WILL NOT, while at the same time putting the blame on the show for being so tone deaf as to write that happening while lighthearted music plays to convince us there’s nothing wrong with this, its just boys being boys.

The reason I do not blame the writing instead of Stiles or Derek when calling them abusive, is because the instances I’m basing their abuse on are frequent, showing up in multiple episodes, in recurring patterns, written by multiple writers. When Stiles lashes out violently at Scott because he holds him personally responsible for what happened to his dad in 5B, that’s not an aberration or a mischaracterization to me, because it pulls straight from the Stiles archives, it is all behavior he has demonstrated before without accountability, without remorse. When Derek trains the beta trio with shock and pain in S2 while saying its for their own good, that’s not an aberration or a mischaracterization because its consistent with what Derek has done and said and believed before, while not having yet been something he’s shown remorse or alternate ways of thinking on yet.

All of that is different from a one-time occasion where Scott behaves in a way that I do not believe fits with his prior or later characterization.

(And yes, Scott has done other harmful things to people, like using his claws on Corey in S5, but literally nobody has ever pretended this wasn’t as harmful or as dangerous as it was. Scott is called out in canon for it. Lydia gives him shit for it. Corey avoids him and mistrusts him because of it. Nobody is saying ‘oh other characters have done worse, when in fact, they actually have, considering Corey’s interactions with Theo and the Dread Doctors. But even the show regards that as irrelevant to the fact that Scott fucked up with Corey and everyone knows it, and thus its tangential to what I’m describing here.)

And let me be perfectly clear. This is not me saying that there is ANY validity to the argument that ‘if it only happens once, its not abuse’. If it happens once in real life, you should still run the hell away, lest it turn out to be a precursor to more. Because the person who hit you ‘just that one time’ is still going to be the same person tomorrow, whereas in fiction, the character who did it ‘just that one time’ is not necessarily going to be the exact same person when penned by a different writer in the next episode. When it happens in fiction, you’re justified in evaluating if it happened because that’s who the character is, or if its because that’s who the person writing him at the moment feels the character is in this moment.

So if you want to defend Derek’s actions via the angle that he is a fictional character written by humans with their own flaws and biases and blindspots, if you want to use that argument to claim that you don’t think he would have acted a certain way here, or that you don’t think it fits with everything else we know about him to have him behaving a certain way there? That’s one thing. But only if you do it while still acknowledging that what he DID do, on screen, was still abusive, and should be described as such.

If you want to defend a character who has committed harm against another, because yes, that describes just about every character on the show - find a way to do it that doesn’t mitigate the harm they actually caused, or unilaterally absolve them of it.

When I say I don’t view Scott as abusive because of that Isaac scene, and because I recognize the writers’ complicity in it, that is not me saying ‘well that’s not really abusive because Scott’s obviously a victim himself.’

You will NEVER catch me saying crap like that, because underneath those actual words is the implicit subtext:

‘Well its different when the person hurting Isaac has also been abused. Its not as bad. I’m okay with characters hurting Isaac as long as they’re characters I like more, and I can point to their own abuse as a factor.’

You will NEVER catch me saying ‘well Scott has done all kinds of good things for Isaac, he loves and protects him, he lets him stay in his house, this was only one time’ - (FROM AN IN STORY PERSPECTIVE).

Because underneath those words is the implicit subtext:

‘Well everyone fucks up and as long as someone loves and supports someone MOST of the time, when someone like that harms Isaac, its not as bad as if it were say, Jackson or one of the twins. I’m okay with characters hurting Isaac as long as those characters make it up to him at other times and Isaac KNOWS that this character didn’t really mean it and really loves him.’

And you will NEVER catch me saying ‘well every other character on the show has done just as bad, and its far from the worst thing that’s ever happened to Isaac’....

because underneath those words is the implicit subtext:

‘As long as whatever happens to Isaac isn’t as bad as the thing that happened to him before this or after this, its not that bad, he can take it, he’s been through worse. And as long as what a character does to Isaac isn’t as bad as what another character did, well, its not really abuse, its not like it was Derek throwing a glass at his head or Allison stabbing him with Chinese ring daggers or whatever, so why are we even talking about this instead of that, we should only ever focus on the WORST things to happen to a character, anything less than that doesn’t matter.’

How we view shows, how we react in fandom, is not divorced from reality and how we behave in the outside world. Its not okay to talk about things like abuse as though they’re academic and abstract and the way we view a character abusing another in fiction has nothing to do with the way we view a person abusing another in real life.

Because even with the awareness that shows operate on two levels, the actions of the characters and the writing behind those characters - when fandom’s priority when viewing a character they like abusing another character they like is to say ‘well its not that bad, other people do way worse, they really love that character and didn’t mean that’.....when they prioritize finding IN STORY excuses for the abuser’s behavior, even when they could just as readily direct their concerns at the writing instead....

How many of those same fans do you think, if confronted with an abuse victim in real life, making allegations against someone that fan likes or trusts -

How many of those same fans do you think will fall back on finding loopholes or ways to mitigate the harm or justify the actions of that person they like and trust and don’t want to believe could really be abusive?

And why do so many people feel comfortable insisting this has nothing to do with the fact that their time in fandom encouraged this behavior by teaching them it was okay and in fact normal and expected to only view abuse through the lens of the abuser, rather than that of their victim, ESPECIALLY if its the abuser they’re more predisposed to liking or have more of a prior connection or attachment to?

What Cheat Features Exist For Spellbreak?

Since Spellbreak is a new title, cheats are still being developed for the game, and many like ours are not yet available. One of the most prominent cheats you'll see in multiplayer titles is ESP. This feature acts like a wallhack, and lets you see the locations of players through objects, by drawing information around them, like showing a box, nametag, or healthbar around their character. This not only lets you see their position, but can also give helpful tactical knowledge, like knowing how much health they have remaining, or where they are looking.

2D Radar is a similar feature that most cheats which include ESP will offer, as it uses the same in-game information as ESP. Radar will typically show up as a box on your screen, and can display dots to represent player around you much like a mini-map. With Wallhax's cheat framework, we show players as directional arrows, so you can see which direction they are looking or moving, as well as optionally displaying arrows which indicate if a player is above or below you significantly. With the amount of vertical movement in Spellbreak, this could be a very helpful feature.

How Do Hacks Work In Spellbreak?

Airbnb banned neo-Nazis from booking in Charlottesville — and set a standard for how tech companies can fight hate

Editor's Note: This story was published before the rally in Charlottesville erupted into violence on Saturday, leaving three dead and dozens injured.

This weekend, alt-righters and white supremacists will descend upon Charlottesville, Virginia, as they have throughout 2017. But they may find themselves without a place to party.

That's thanks to Airbnb, which this week removed users who were using the service to book venues as part of their Unite the Right rally, as Gizmodo first reported.

The company learned from some of its users that Unite the Right attendees were organizing logistics on the neo-Nazi website the Daily Storm, which brands itself as "The World's Most Genocidal Republican Website" and has a poster for the event on its front page that urges visitors to join the rally "to end Jewish influence in America." Once Airbnb confirmed that some rally-goers had used the platform to book listings for events associated with the anti-Semitic rally, the home-share site decided to boot those users' accounts.

This wasn't just an easy and correct call for Airbnb. It was also an example of how a platform company can actually make judgments about what is and is not an acceptable behavior, rather than simply waving away controversies by claiming it offers a mere tool for its users. That's something that many deep-pocketed Silicon Valley firms can't seem to figure out—and an area in which, until recently, Airbnb struggled, too.

In this case, the problem that Airbnb had on its hands was clear-cut.

"We've taken over all of the large AirBnbs in a particular area," wrote a user named SCnazi on a Daily Storm message board. "So far, we're close to filling our 7th house. We have 80-90 people, and are a mix of various AltRight groups."

SCnazi continued: "We've set up 'Nazi Uber' and the 'Hate Van' to help in moving our people around as needed, esp. between our off-site locations and Charlottesville."

Airbnb said it booted a number of rally attendees because they "would be pursuing behavior on the platform that would be antithetical" to the community policy," which requires "those who are members of the Airbnb community accept people regardless of their race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or age."

Not all tech companies have been as swift to act in similar circumstances. Like Facebook, which following the June terrorist attack in London allowed a post by Republican Louisiana Rep. Clay Higgins that called for the hunting and murdering of "radicalized" Muslim suspects to remain online.

Yet a status update made in May by DiDi Delgado, a Black Lives Matter activist, that said "all white people" are racist—an extreme argument to some, but not one that called for violence—was removed and her account was suspended for seven days.

And then there's Twitter, where the alt-right has thrived, using the social media site to broadcast outright hate speech and harass people off the platform. Twitter routinely flounders when asked by its users to help protect them. Last year, actress Leslie Jones was driven off the platform after being barraged by racist tweets and inaction from Twitter in stopping it.

Jones' bad experience made headlines because of her celebrity and the involvement of Milo Yiannopoulos. But as almost any Jewish journalist who has ever written critically about Trump or any woman who has ever railed about systemic sexism can attest, harassment on the network is very real—and frequently goes unaddressed by Twitter.

Airbnb's decision to not allow its community to be an organizing tool for a white supremacist gathering is an example of a tech company taking its commitment to community safety seriously. It's also an example of a company maturing and learning.

In April, Dyne Suh — a woman who booked a cabin in California on Airbnb — was alerted only minutes before arriving that her reservation was canceled after the host sent a text message that read: "I wouldn't rent to u if you were the last person on earth. One word says it all. Asian."

Last year the hashtag #AirBnbWhileBlack proliferated on Twitter as a place for black users to recount their experiences being denied places to stay even when the listings were marked as open. Quirtina Crittenden, who started the hashtag after being routinely rejected by users with open listings, said that when she changed her photo to a generic city skyline and her name to Tina, she had no problem booking a place to stay.

While these incidents reflect racism on the part of Airbnb hosts and not values the company embraces, Airbnb decided that it had a serious role to play in making sure its service wasn't a place that fostered discrimination. In April, the company entered into an agreement with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing that would allow the regulatory agency to perform racial discrimination audits for hosts who have three or more listings on the site, which the state has long conducted of landlords to ensure that fair-housing laws are upheld.

Because of that agreement, the woman who rejected Suh because of her race is now required by the state to pay $5,000 and take a college-level Asian American studies course, as well as agree to comply with the state's fair-housing laws. Airbnb's latest move demonstrates the company is willing to act proactively—as opposed to, say, waiting for one of the partygoers to hang an anti-Semitic banner on the front of the house they booked.

More frequently, platforms only respond to such incidents when someone gets hurt or a news outlet embarrasses the company after a major misstep. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg initially refused to acknowledge that Facebook had a fake-news problem that was causing misinformation to circulate and potentially even influence voters, calling it "a pretty crazy idea" in November after Trump won.

Now his company has "disputed" tags and has teamed up with fact-checking organizations to help combat the spread of misinformation. (Its latest effort, "Related Articles," may end up being the most successful yet at tackling falsified articles on the network.)

Of course, social media websites designed for free-flowing communication are much harder to moderate than a website with a focus as narrow as home-stays. But those sites can still follow Airbnb's lead: When people in your community complain, you need to investigate and take action. That means not being afraid of pissing off thousands of people who use their platforms to share hate speech—which, yes, sometimes bleed into broader accusations of partisan bias, which social media sites are particularly loathe to incur. In an industry where losing users means losing money, booting anyone is a big deal, but it can also send a big message.

Zuckerberg said in May that Facebook was dealing with its content moderation dilemma by hiring 3,000 more people to work on the issue. But adding thousands of more staff to deal with the problem is unlikely to change a thing if Facebook refuses to make a clear commitment to protect its users first and foremost.

That means meeting with groups representing people who have been adversely affected by the Facebook's current content moderation strategy to get a clear understanding how the platform isn't working for everyone. But that's not happening. In January, a coalition of 77 civil rights groups wrote a letter to Facebook requesting a meeting to address what the organizers called the "disproportionate censorship of Facebook users of color." Facebook declined.

Twitter, for its part, says it's trying to curb harassment. Last month, the company reported that it's "taking action on 10x the number of abusive accounts every day compared to the same time last year" and now works to "limit account functionality or place suspensions on thousands more abusive accounts each day."

But that's based on internal data, and whether or not those fixes are truly meaningful depends on how many accounts it censured before. Still, something is better than nothing, even if it has taken years for Twitter to step up.

While Airbnb did the right thing in this case, monitoring situations on a case-by-case basis is unlikely to be very effective. Its platform is run on software that can book reservations much, much faster than a human can erase them. And that means that the company might need to use software to monitor for and flag bigoted interactions on the site. For example, if a black user is repeated being denied booking requests that are otherwise open, technology could flag that.

There are serious limits to policing hateful activities. It's nearly impossible to read a person's intentions; we also probably wouldn't want Airbnb to wade into political stances that don't involve outright hatred and calls for violence. Which is why having a clear, easy way for people to report problems they are experiencing, as well as a commitment to quickly investigate and act appropriately, is important, too.

And if the racists, sexists, and anti-Semites gathering in Charlottesville don't like it, they can go make their own Airbnb. It's a free country.
