Pocono Palace has been sold. The property will close and change hands on May 2nd, 2024.
I’ve spent so much time exploring and researching the dead resorts in this area and in the midst of all those visits, Pocono Palace has been my saving grace. It’s one of the few places I feel is still so authentically old-school-honeymoon-era-Poconos and still has its champagne glass tubs, round beds and heart shaped pools. It has also been one of the places we have continuously stayed at while doing Pocono research for this account.
So seeing it join the long list of dead Pocono hotels breaks my heart. I’d like to think the new owners will continue to run it exactly as it is but I’ve heard that it will be turned into a rehab center or wellness facility. Time will tell.
Enjoy some vintage photos + a few unedited snapshots from our last visit. 💘

in my mind palace there dwells a giant ever-toiling machine that places the undersiders in one situation per second. the undersiders at the supermarket. the undersiders and their pondering orbs in the theoretical universe where they are all wizards. the undersiders at the aquarium. the undersiders trapped in an elevator. the undersiders in wonderland. the undersiders in the paleozoic era. the undersiders if i baked them into a pie. the undersiders when its laundry day. the undersiders but brian is really into male interior design. the undersiders but lisa is really into lacanian psychoanalysis. the undersiders in a communal saw trap. the undersiders but they all have to dress and speak like dickensian orphans and say things like oh heavens me. the undersiders at the minion movie. the undersiders at ohtori academy. the undersiders but alec and aisha pissed someone off on 4chan really bad and now theyre all superdoxxed and at security risk. the undersiders at a fancy hotel. the undersiders hiding a body. the undersiders if they opened a mattress store as a money laundering scheme

15 DAYS OF SONGFICS FOR HALLOWEEN (OCT 15TH - OCT 31ST)
‘Excuse me are you miss Y/L/N?’ the waiter said as he appeared at our table. I felt the gaze of everyone at the table fall on me but I ignored them, instead looking at the young man who was waiting for my answer. ‘Yes that’s me,’ I said. ‘There’s a phone call for you in the lobby,’ he said. ‘Oh,’ I said turning to my friends, ‘I’ll be back in a minute.’
There was a chime of responses as I grabbed my purse and shimmied out of the booth so I could follow the boy through the large showroom and out through the doors to the lobby. He led me to a phone bank, pointing at one which had the receiver laying on the wooden shelf below.
‘Thank you,’ I said with a smile and he nodded before he walked across the room and through another set of double doors that led into the bar. I placed my purse on the wooden shelf and then picked up the receiver and put it to my ear, nervous as to who might have gone through the effort to get a hold of me.
‘Hello,’ I said. ‘Y/N?’ a dark sultry voice replied. Elvis. I sighed a little with relief. At least it wasn’t bad news. Though my relief was quickly replaced by irritation. ‘It’s me,’ I said rather curtly. ‘You sure are a hard girl to track down you know that?’ he said with a small laugh. I could picture the smirk on his face. ‘Well maybe that’s because I didn’t want to be found,’ I said. ‘Is that right?’ he asked. ‘Yeah,’ I said. ‘Well I was under the impression you’d be at my show tonight,’ he replied. ‘Oh, I was,’ I said the anger that had been festering inside me since early this evening returning full throttle, ‘I was there early enough to see some pretty young thing leaving your hotel suite.’ ‘Baby-‘ ‘Don't baby me, Elvis. What? What are you going to say? It’s not what it looks like? She’s just a friend? I’m crazy?’ I said tears stinging my eyes. Elvis sighed deeply.
‘I’m not gonna say any of that,’ he said. ‘You don’t need to. I’ve heard it all before remember?’ I sighed, ‘how did you find me anyway?’ ‘Red,’ he said, ‘I was worried when you didn’t show up…asked him to go out and look for ya.’
As I went to respond there was a clatter behind me and I turned around to find Ron, my date, barrelling through the double doors. He spotted me immediately and came toward me.
‘Are you nearly done Y/N?’ he asked, ‘the shows about to start any minute.’ ‘Who’s that?’ I heard Elvis murmur though the phone was far enough away from my ear it was barely audible. ‘I’ll be through in a minute,’ I said mustering a smile. ‘Well don’t be too long ya hear,’ he said, ‘you’re not gonna wanna miss this.’
And with that, he disappeared back through the double doors. I glanced around the large open room. The lobby was deserted apart from me and a coat check attendant who seemed to be so engrossed in the magazine they were reading they never even looked up as Ron entered and exited. As I placed the handset back to my ear I heard Elvis’ voice repeat his question though now there was a hard edge to it, ‘who was that?’ ‘A friend,’ I said simply. ‘What kind of friend?’ he said his voice laced with accusation. He was irked and I was enjoying it. ‘A new one,’ I said simply, ‘seeing that girl at your suite got me real shook up. So I decided to blow off some steam in the casino. Well you know me I’m awful at gamblin’ but Ron helped me out, his family owns one of the casinos on the strip so he knows what he’s doing. Even said he’d take me to the best show in town here at Caesars.’ ‘Is that right?’ he said. It seemed an innocent question but I knew he would be bubbling with jealousy. See that was the problem with him. He could have a different woman every night, parade them around and never expect any of them to get jealous of the other. But if he saw you with another man? All bets were off.
I didn’t know why I was goading him. Maybe I liked the way it hurt him to know that I could land on my feet without him. Maybe it was the way my heart beat a little quicker knowing he cared about me. Or that the idea of me with another man drove him wild.
‘Yeah,’ I said. ‘Well, that’s unfortunate,’ he said, amusement returning to his tone. He was baiting me. Begging me to yield to him. ‘Why’s that?’ I said, cursing inwardly at my lack of willpower. ‘Because I’m up in my suite,’ he said, ‘laying on my bed thinking about you. I missed you y’know. Out there on that stage. Every time those house lights came up I was looking for you.’ ‘Elvis,’ I sighed feeling my resolve crumble. ‘Now, I gotta be back on stage soon,’ he said, ‘but that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend we’re all alone right now.’ ‘I don’t know EP,’ I said scanning the room again. It was still deserted but the way my skin tingled made me sure that if anyone did come in they’d know exactly what I was doing. ‘Aw come on baby,’ he murmured, ‘put those sweet lips closer to the phone and we can pretend it’s just you and me.’ ‘And get kicked out of this lobby for lewd behaviour?’ I giggled. ‘Now I never said nuthin about being dirty did I, pretty girl?’ he chuckled, ‘but if you’re so inclined.’ ‘EP,’ I said as I twiddled the phone cord around my finger nervously. As I did the door burst open again and Ron appeared looking more frantic than before.
‘Y/N, I was beginning to think you’d run off on me,’ he said coming towards me, ‘what’s taking so long?’ ‘Sorry Ron,’ I said, ‘I’ll be in in a minute.’ ‘Tell him he’ll have to go,’ I heard Elvis say through the receiver, that hard edge back in his voice. ‘Can’t it wait?’ Ron said, his hands coming to his hips as he looked at me imploringly. I should’ve hung up the phone. I should’ve hung up a long time before now. This man was nice. Kind. When I’d been all maudlin and angry playing blackjack in that casino he’d cheered me up and made me laugh. He invited me for dinner. He made me forget about Elvis. I should’ve followed him into that room.
‘I’m sorry,’ I said, ‘my friend needs me…girl stuff.’ ‘Well try not to be too long okay?’ he said with a sad smile. I nodded meekly and watched as he turned and disappeared back into the showroom. I sighed turning back to the phone.
‘I can’t believe you made me do that,’ I sighed though I knew it wasn’t entirely his fault. ‘You stayed cos you love me,’ he mumbled, ‘pay no mind about him darlin’. Tell me something.’ ‘What?’ I asked. ‘What are you wearing?’ he mused. ‘Elvis,’ I said, heat creeping up on my cheeks immediately. ‘C’mon,’ he purred, ‘it’s just you and me remember.’
I took another look around the room, making sure I was completely alone. ‘That pink dress I got the other day,’ I said. ‘The sparkly one?’ he asked. ‘Yeah,’ I said. ‘Bet you look divine,’ he mused breathily. ‘How about you, huh?’ I giggled, ‘you still in that ol sweaty jumpsuit?’ ‘Nah,’ he chuckled, ‘I showered after the show. I’ve just got a towel on now.’ ‘Is that right?’ I mused, ‘creating yourself a little tent?’ ‘Ain’t nothing about me lil honey,’ he purred making me squirm uncomfortably as heat pooled in my lower belly. ‘So,’ I smirked, ‘now you tell me something.’ ‘What’s that mama?’ ‘If I were there…what would we be doing?’ I mused. He cleared his throat and I could hear the sound of the mattress springs underneath him as he shifted his weight.
‘Well, for starters we’d get rid of that tight lil number you have on,’ he said throatily. ‘Yeah?’ I said. He mumbled an ‘mmhmm’ as he shifted again and I could hear the sound of fabric moving, ‘what about what’s underneath?’ ‘What’s that baby?’ ‘That red set you got me on your birthday,’ I said. ‘Fuck,’ he said, ‘you don’t know what you’re doing to me mama.’ ‘Well I hope it’s the same as what we did last Thursday,’ I said, ‘at that lil boutique on the strip.’ ‘Showed me what that pretty mouth of yours could do that day,’ he grunted and I could hear the sound of skin on skin, ‘this don’t feel as good as you do baby.’
I went to reply but there was a noise behind me that startled me and forced me to turn around. A couple came out of the showroom doors clearly mid-argument. They didn’t seem to notice me, too enamoured in the row to even spot me by the phone bank but my confidence ebbed a little.
‘What’s the matter darlin?’ he asked, ‘your friend ain't back is he?’ ‘No,’ I mumbled, ‘people.’ ‘Take no notice of ‘em,’ he said, ‘keep talking.’ ‘E,’ I whispered. ‘Come on baby,’ he said, ‘don’t leave me like this. I need you.’ ‘Tell me what you’d do,’ I said trying to keep the flow and ignore the couple who seemed to want to air their dirty laundry right here in the lobby.
‘You wanna know?’ he said throatily. ‘More than anything baby,’ I purred. ‘First of all,’ he said, ‘I’d rip that pretty lil set you have on right off.’ ‘That makes sense I mean there’s already a hole in this dress you know,’ I giggled, ‘you’re very impatient.’ ‘I know what I want,’ he said. ‘Then what?’ ‘I’d pin you to this bed,’ he said with a little pant, ‘kiss down that perfect body of yours and bury my head between your pretty little thighs.’ ‘Mmm,’ I mused, ‘that’s a dangerous game.’ ‘How’s that?’ he asked. ‘Well you know I can't resist running my fingers through your hair when you do that,’ I purred, ‘and everyone at that late show would know just what you’d been up to.’ ‘You’d love that, wouldn’t you? All them girls knowing that I’d just been fucked,’ he smirked into the phone. ‘Oh, I’d make sure they all knew,’ I said, ‘in fact, I’d make sure the whole of Las Vegas knew.’ ‘Yeah?’ he grunted. His breath was getting heavier now and as I heard the sound of the couple getting more distant I stopped caring. I was all about him now.
‘I bet those cool glass windows would feel real nice against my skin,’ I mused twirling the phone cord around my finger, ‘with you holding me still, pounding into me from behind.’ ‘Fuck baby,’ he grunted. ‘Would you cum in me, Elvis?’ I purred. I surprised myself. I was always so careful. Elvis was too, the sting of a paternity suit making him a little paranoid. But this wasn’t about babies. This was about marking his territory. This was about us.
‘I would,’ he said, ‘fill you up nice in front of the whole of Las Vegas.’ ‘The best show in town?’ I chuckled. ‘In the world baby,’ he grunted, ‘you want it? You want me to cum deep inside you baby?’ ‘More than anything,’ I whispered. ‘Fuck Y/N,’ he said but his voice gave way to loud rampant moans. He was panting hard and my own heart was hammering away in my chest I thought I may burst. As he came around he mumbled a little, ‘oh baby.’
‘You good EP?’ I asked unable to stop myself from smiling. ‘More than good mama,’ he chuckled, ‘you oughta see the mess you made.’ ‘Well you don’t have long to clean up baby,’ I said my eyes jumping to the clock on the wall. He was due on stage in ten minutes. ‘I know,’ he said, ‘and you’ve got your show to watch huh?’ ‘Maybe,’ I said biting my lip. ‘Maybe?’ he asked. I could hear the smile in his voice. I knew I shouldn’t. I knew I should hang up and go and watch the show with Ron as planned. But before I knew it the words were tumbling out my mouth, ‘maybe I’ll see if I can get into your late show instead.’ ‘Hmmm,’ he said, ‘that sounds like a good idea to me.’ ‘I mean it won’t be a patch on the lil show we just threw together but you never know it might be worth a watch,’ I giggled. ‘I think it might,’ he said, ‘though I don’t know how good it’ll be I’m sure I’ll be spending most of it looking for you in the crowd.’ ‘I better get a move on then. Wouldn’t want you to be distracted on my account.’ ‘I’ll get Jerry to come and get you. Meet him out front,’ he said, ‘bye darlin.’ ‘Bye,’ I said listening as the line went dead. With a small sigh, I placed it back on its holder and grabbed my purse turning to head back into the auditorium.
As my hand touched the door though I paused. Then, cowardly, I turned and headed down to the bar through the double doors opposite. This room was a bit busier than the last, a couple of patrons sitting at a couple of tables whilst waiters lingered near the bar ready to be summoned. I walked up to the boy I had met before who was talking to a pretty waitress. I tapped him on the shoulder and he turned.
‘Hey,’ I said, ‘do you remember me? The girl from the phone bank?’ ‘Yes Miss,’ he said, ‘how can I help?’ ‘You remember the guy I was sitting with?’ I asked, ‘in the back booth in the corner?’ ‘Yeah, you’re Mr Mallin’s guest, right?’ he said. ‘Yeah, could you do me a favour?’ I asked and he nodded, ‘would you let him know I’ve had to go?’ ‘And if he asks why?’ he said. I bit my lip nervously. I knew he wasn’t prying. I knew his question was a fair and simple one but it still made my stomach knot. But the truth was a hard pill to swallow and so the only thing I managed to get out was, ‘A friend needs me.’
He nodded but before he could say anything more I was headed towards the exit hoping Jerry would pull up before the waiter got word back to my date.

Random Story Setting Idea (you don't have to do anything with this if you don't want to, I just want to see writers' thoughts when they hear these prompts):
The charming and elegant guest bedroom with a four-poster bed in a medieval fantasy world
Celest dropped on the bench with a loud groan. More to herself, she announced, "I, am officially exhausted."
"I could carry you," Lunu offered immediately, his light green wings twitching.
"You just can't make that offer to only Celest," Geore grouched, dropping onto the same bench, the unfortunate seat sinking into the ground while the other end shot up, making Celest squeak as she was tossed up, then dropped into orc's side.
Lunu made a displeased chitter. "I could never carry you, Geore. You're too big."
"I think it's more your open bias that's the issue," Chandelure said, looking a little flushed, sending a half hearted glare to the sun.
"But I always show my bias. Why is it an issue now?"
Sighing, Celest offered her waterskin to the merfolk, offering, "Do you need my water, Chand?"
"I need a bath," Chandelure groaned. "And soon. Luckily, Sir Magnificence is one of the wealthiest teachers of Valore, so we'll get something good."
"Indeed you will my dedicated students!"
The all had a start as the wizard appeared, offering them all a big smile. It dropped when he turned his gaze to Celest and Geore. "Aaaand Geore. Who's ruining public seating. I'll get billed for that later..."
Geore gave a low growl.
"WHO'S ready for a four star hotel experience!" Magnificence asked dramatically, offering them all a big beam.
"Really?!" Celest gasped.
"You four have the honor of having me as your escort for this adventure! What amazing teacher would I be if I didn't treat you guys?"
"This is so much better than traveling with Rafaello!" Chandelure squealed.
Celest quietly agreed. As much as she admired the gruff wingless harpy, as he was a powerful and capable monk, one of the greatest heroes to arise in the recent era; he was not the pampering sort. Even in cities, he'd rather they camp out in a local park than an inn. Builds character, he'd say.
But sometimes, she just wants a bed.
And the excitement for that bed drew as Sir Magnificence lead them to his selected inn, looking like a palace to their tired eyes. The teens were all walking on an eager high as they were led up to their room, which came crashing down when they saw a singular bed.
It was big.
Easily able to fit four people.
But it was still a single bed.
"What is this," Chandelure demanded.
"Your room," the wizard answered, like it was obvious.
"Why is there only one bed?" Chandelure demanded.
"Ah, a room with five beds was double this one's price. I have to be a little frugal."
"Are you serious! Geore's going to crush us in our sleep!" Chandelure proclaimed.
"Hey!" Geore protested.
"You'll be fine," Magnificence dismissed, "at most, you'll just be Geore's teddy bear for the night. He likes to cuddle with someone while he sleeps."
"No I don't!"
"Geore. I did most of the night watch. You hug your pillow more than you sleep on it."
"I still want my own bed!" Chandelure snapped.
Lunu announced, "I don't sleep in beds. I sleep on walls."
"Well there you go! You got some extra space now! That all works out, right?"
Chandelure and Geore glared at him.
Celest was still gaping at the big singular bed.
"You guys sleep well, we leave at the crack of dawn," Magnificence said, leaving them with a dramatic flare of his cloak.
With an irritated groan, Chandelure said, "I'm going to take a back. Celest, when I am done, you're going to help me get out of it, and when we sleep, I am sleeping far away from Geore."
"Fine with me," Geore snapped, "I don't want to get poked by your fins or deal with a wet bed."
"I'll be dry when I got to bed!" Chandelure snapped.
"Just give me a shout when you need my help," Celest sighed, rubbing at her face. "And I'll... I'll sleep in the middle."
"Works for me," Geore declared, heading for the bed and just dropping onto it, gear and all, making it bounce and rattle.
Chandelure practically hissed, "At least change clothes!"
When the two girls later settled for the night, as Magnificence had warned, Celest wound up having a snug night as Geore all but hauled Celest close, holding her securely as he snored and drooled on the lavish pillow.
A little stiff and tired, she wound up accepting Lunu's offer to be carried the next day.

{ we can never be friends verse }
“Hey Bee, mind if uh mind if I stay with you for a while ?” He just needed a place to crash that wasn’t alone in his palace or at the hotel . And Beezlebub was always there for him.
It wasn't the first time Lucifer had asked to stay at the Hive for a while and wouldn't ever be the last. (Hopefully.) The doors to Beelzebub's mansion in Gluttony were always open for the King of Hell, a fact that was only reinforced when Bee threw them wide to invite him in. The Queen of Gluttony smiled down at her friend, reaching out a hand to pat his shoulder. "'Course you can, Lulu. My Hive's always open to you. Uh...just...don't mind the mess. I was looking for costumes for a party and, well... I haven't really gotten around to cleaning up yet."
That was a bit of an understatement: clothes were still flung everywhere in the manor's front hall, relics of bygone eras tossed onto furniture, onto the floor, and, inexplicably, into a giant (clean) punch bowl. Bee could feel her ears lowering in embarrassment, her mane and tail shifting colors to a deep crimson with flashes of lighter reds. Fuck, she hated that he was seeing her place like this. Normally the Hive was spotless post-party, but... "Sorry. Promise all of this will be out of the way in a bit. I just... after the masquerade, I had a mountain of paperwork. Then there was a visit with Stolas, a double visit from Paimon, Belle came by to yell at me for stealing her drugs again... Still. Sorry about what you're walking into."

THINGS ARE STARTING TO COME BACK TO YOU, AND YOU'RE CURIOUS. YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. › FROM ELIZABETH MARCH. @embodies
She still sensed it, the universe spinning around with no ending or beginning; the way her blood curdled a horrid gurgle, even if it no longer pumped to her brain. She haunted marble walls on silent feet. The place a fusion of malevolence and beauty, and Jane, despite her hollowed flesh and often unseeing eyes, couldn't help but find a strange sort of enticement within said walls, all perfectly draped and painted. She knew quite little of its happenings, bizarre spirits of muddled eras all sharing one patch of land; although the mind became a hazy thing due to submittance of the final years of her life, she was no fool. Isolated company was merely favoured, a lithe black cat scampering against corners, gaze finding deathly endurances but never remaining long enough to understand reasoning behind vile acts. Sitting, feeling, unthinking.
Where there was rot, there was Jane Ives. Stuck in the jaws of a hellish beast, taker of lives, but leaving the soul to crumble. Oftentimes she wondered what she was actually doing here; inner workings utterly vandalised by a madman's execution for warped world-peace. The toxicity resting in her bloodstream confused old memories, scorched her past-life: all she remembered of her mother entailed a whiff of perfume and a few phrases of a lullaby she used to sing. One day she'll uncover truths, the ugly and pure— but for now, the body only yearns for kindred consideration, perhaps something to call her own. Three decades would rear its date in a handful of months, and a spark had begun to litter in her mind's eye.
Tumblr media
“Yes. I am curious.” The very first time Jane saw Elizabeth, she was positive she had moved to a better destination; swore she bore witness to an angel welcoming her to heaven's palace. (Oh Saint Peter let me in, you must know where I've been! Won't you tell me at last who I am?) Ever quickly, the hand she wished to hold, she realised, was sharp, a creature's claw; fascination did not dwindle but fear ushered the child away. It's clear the woman saw everything happening inside her hotel, including frizzled recollections resurfacing, taunting innocence of youth and marking it for horror. “I remember... things.” Honesty possessed no hesitation, as the words spilled it felt good to speak them aloud. To relieve herself. “There is a block. A... something foggy. It stops me remembering.” Frustration threatened its course, as one might perceive through her jaw tightening, lifeless pallor nearly gaining a flash of colour.
This is your story, written and rewritten, scratched out, burned and buried. “Did I... Was I always... this?” Is it foretold that I haunt the head of a girl graced for much more than her destiny provided? For the time lost
Summary: Zuko wants to erase every reminder of his past mistakes, and Katara will take him on a journey to, quite literally, heal both of their scarrings.
Contains: Angst, Fluff, Katara has burns scars from Aang's first attempts to firebend, Katara tries to get over her resentment towards the FN, Zuko doesn't hate Azula.
Dear reader: I hope you enjoy it! <3 Let me know if you want me to continue posting
Find chapter one here and chapter three here.
┊┊┊┊☆┊*🌙*┊☆┊┊┊┊
Chapter Two
Katara thought about her students while folding clothes. A decent amount of people decided to move to the Southern Water Tribe after the war ended, and she knew a lot of families took this as a chance to start over. For now, she was in charge of nurturing the minds of the young benders that arrived. Even though she loved this new job, it was time for her to take a break.
“Hey, what’s with the sunglasses?” her dad asked, taking them off the nightstand and putting them on. “I know it’s summer but we’re still in the South Pole, kid”
Katara smiled. “I’m just packing them for tomorrow”.
His dad offered to help her, but she was almost done when he arrived, so she thought of two plans for her trip instead. Plan A, she would eat at the first rotisserie that appeared on her way to Zuko’s fancy royal mansion/palace/casa. Then, she would go to his house and even though she insisted on staying in a hotel nearby, she would eventually agree to stay. She would get a Fire Nation royalty-style spa day, Zuko’s treat (it’s important to clarify that, at least half of this plan was stolen on Toph’s visits to the Fire Nation. Though it is quite obvious). After all of that, she would ask him (preferably during a beach day) why he is visiting the North Tribe so much. And right before leaving, she would spend a day at Iroh’s shop.
However, it seemed like she had to go with plan B. Sure, it wasn’t a bad plan B, but it definitely involved fewer massages and face masks than the original, and Katara was just a girl who wanted a little self-care. Can anyone blame her?
“I like what you’ve done to the place” Katara stared at the wooden panels on the wall. She was too shy to confess her feelings about fire hazards, she didn’t even know if it was offensive for him.
“I tried to make it a bit retro, you know?” Iroh explained. “Everything is changing so fast, I’m afraid the world forgets its roots. But I guess that’s not a big preoccupation for younger folks”.
The words of Iroh resonated in her head on most occasions, especially since she was aware that he was Azulon’s firstborn. Even if he had spent more than a decade fixing his past actions, it was still weird for her to share the same table as a guy he had resented from the moment she gained consciousness. It’s hard to get used to this new era, and it’s probably the reason she barely went to the Fire Nation, even if it meant fewer hangouts with Zuko. In the last months, Aang helped her a lot to channel her antipathy into different, less draining emotions. Today’s emotion is: curiosity.
“I think I know why you are here, Katara” he offered her a cup.
“Well, we both needed a vacation”, she said. ”Zuko’s told me how busy these last weeks have been for him… plus I missed swimming without the risk of dying of hypothermia”.
“Then you’re certainly going to love the beaches down on Chaisee’s island” Iroh gave her a warm laugh. “Oh, the times I had there when I was your age!”
Katara took a sip on the cup and smiled.
“But be careful, Zuko’s skin might be sensitive after last week”, Katara cautiously nodded, “as a water bender yourself, you know how the healing procedures work”.
Healing procedures? Katara nodded again. Could Iroh tell she was nervous?
“Yeah…. I totally forgot. It’s such a sensitive procedure!” she said, having no idea about this healing thing. “And I wouldn’t want to hurt a Fire Lord, they have a history of heated arguments don’t they?” Apparently, it was impossible for Katara to shut her mouth. “Anyways, promise I won’t interfere in the treatment. Don’t know how I forgot, Zuko told me all about it on my way here… I mean, on a letter of course. He wasn’t on the ship. I guess you know that” shut up shut up shut up.
Iroh widened his eyes and made a frown that immediately told Katara that her attempts to sound unbothered and casual failed, as usual.
“Did I say something I shouldn’t?” Iroh covered his mouth his hand.
Katara tried to comfort him. “Well, he technically told me about his trips to the North Tribe, so it was a matter of time until I figured out what was going on”, honestly, she never even considered the idea of him wanting to get rid of his scar. He hadn't mentioned since he was sixteen. “I have a few questions now, though”
“Maybe you should ask him directly, I’m sure you’re going to notice the change once he arrives. A healing process is slow, and you know Zuko: he wants everything fast”, Iroh sighed, “but in his last letter he told me that this healing session was quite intense”.
He poured the water into two cups.
“The thing is,” he cleared his voice, “Zuko doesn’t understand that there are some parts of a wound that can only be healed by him.”

Sigiriya: An Inspiration for Modern-Day Architecture
Tumblr media
In the heart of Sri Lanka, rising above lush green forests, stands the awe-inspiring rock fortress of Sigiriya. This ancient marvel isn’t merely a testament to the architectural prowess of bygone eras; it also serves as a guiding light for modern-day architectural practices. Let’s delve into how Sigiriya has managed to inspire and influence the contemporary architectural landscape.
1. Harmony with Nature
Sigiriya teaches architects the art of merging structures seamlessly with the natural environment. The rock fortress effortlessly blends into its surroundings, almost as if it sprouted organically from the earth. Modern architects, in their pursuit of sustainable design, draw inspiration from this. Today’s eco-friendly structures, with green roofs, vertical gardens, and landscaped terraces, echo Sigiriya’s gardens and ponds, emphasizing coexistence with nature.
2. Multifunctional Design
Sigiriya wasn’t just a fortress; it was a city center, a palace, and a monastic refuge. Its multi-layered design encompassed royal chambers, audience halls, gardens, moats, and even frescoes. Today’s architectural designs emphasize multifunctionality, creating spaces that serve various purposes. Be it mixed-use buildings combining residential, commercial, and recreational spaces or homes with transformable rooms, the versatility of Sigiriya continues to resonate.
3. Water Management
The intricate water management system of Sigiriya, with its canals, fountains, and moats, was nothing short of genius. Its ability to retain water during dry seasons and divert excess during rains showcased an impressive understanding of hydraulic technology. Modern architecture, faced with climate change and water scarcity, values water-saving and efficient distribution systems, drawing parallels to Sigiriya’s ancient wisdom.
4. Aesthetic with Purpose
The mesmerizing frescoes of Sigiriya, believed to depict either celestial nymphs or the consorts of the king, weren’t just ornamental; they told stories and reflected the culture of the era. Contemporary architecture similarly leans towards designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also carry deeper meanings, narratives, or reflect cultural values.
5. Defensive Strategies
Sigiriya’s architectural layout was masterfully planned to include defensive strategies. From its steep rock base, making it almost impregnable, to the mirror wall preventing defacement, and even the lion gate deterring invaders — each element had a protective purpose. Today’s secure architectural designs — be it in terms of data protection in smart buildings or privacy considerations — owe their lineage to ancient protective measures like those at Sigiriya.
Conclusion
Sigiriya, with its soaring boulders, breathtaking frescoes, and landscaped gardens, isn’t merely an archaeological wonder. It’s a timeless beacon for architects, offering lessons in sustainability, functionality, aesthetics, and more. As we craft the skyscrapers and smart homes of the 21st century, we do so standing on the shoulders of ancient giants like Sigiriya, drawing inspiration from the past to forge a brighter, more innovative future.
As you’re captivated by the magic of Sigiriya and its architectural brilliance, consider enriching your experience further by resting amidst nature. SigiriyaJungles Hotel offers a harmonious blend of luxury and serenity, echoing the very essence of Sigiriya’s charm. Let it be your tranquil retreat after a day of exploration.

Ch-3: Almost fainting at a painting
Haanji namaste. Sorry for this ekdum weird chapter name par dimag mein acha naam aaya nahi. Also Saanjh, if you are reading this, khana hai iss chapter mein.
CH-1 CH-2
Anika was back to health within a day. Nobody made any comments or asked any questions about the veena episode, but Anika's head was bubbling with many questions, yet she kept silent about it.
Later she concluded that it happened due to her being deeply invested into the story. She had always been attached to stories, especially to the ones which involved tragic romances, stories from bygone eras, and epic heroes and heroines.
However, all her questions were pushed to the back of her head when Sonalika announced that they were to leave for Bhubaneswar within the next two days.
'Chal, Anika, now focus on the project and not on their incomplete love story,' she muttered to herself when she heard Sonalika.
Two days later, she was standing in front of the glorious mansion of the Routrays that stretched over the majestic green Udayagiri hills. Her mouth opened in wonder, as her eyes took in the grand view that blessed her eyes. Sonalika looked at Anika's face and tugged her hand playfully.
"Muh toh band karo didi. Aage aur bahut hai." She walked inside the gates when two men in suits arrived and took their luggage.
They sat in the reception area which according to Anika looked like a normal reception area of a hotel. It looked like a guest hall fit for royals. The entire floor was sprawled with maroon sofas with sofa covers embroidered in traditional designs. There was a beautiful chandelier over her head and for a second, she wondered about the probability of the chandelier falling on her.
After ten minutes, a lady in a neatly draped maroon saree arrived with a bright smile on her face, holding a tray with two mocktails.
Sonalika got up instantly, a cheerful look on her face, exclaimed, "Ah Nandini, such a pleasure to see you. How have you been?"
Nandini replied while offering the tray to Anika. "I have been well my child, just that the sun this year has been too harsh." She moved her eyes towards her arms. "Look, how much have I tanned this time! This will take a month of haldi besan to go away."
Sonalika took her drink from her and sat on the sofa. "So, Anika, she is Nandini. She works here at the palace and I have known her since childhood." With a teasing grin, she added, "And don't be fooled by her youthful appearance. God knows how doesn't she age." She then gestured towards Anika. "And she is Anika, my school friend. She is doing a history project so she will be with us for a month.
Nandini's ears perked up and Anika observed a glint in her eyes, which quickly went away. "Well, I hope your stay here is comfortable and since you are my Sona's friend, which makes you my child as well, you can always reach out to me if you need anything," she said in a friendly tone. "And call me Nandini only." She passed one last smile at the girls and took the tray away and walked away.
Anika, amused at the lady, turned towards Sonalika. "Bro, how old is she? You said that you knew her since your childhood.'
" Thirty nine, I guess. No older than forty though."
"She looks like she is in her late twenties, no way can she be thirty nine."
"Yeah when we grow old, I will ask her to share her anti-ageing secrets."
***
"This sword belongs to Gajendra Deva Routray and is of twenty kilos," Nandini stated, as Anika's eyes grew wide in shock.
"Kshatriyon mein itni power kahan se aati thi haan," said Anika, meeting a pair of amused eyes. "Mera toh 1kg atta lane mein hi halat tight hojati hai."
Nandini suppressed a chuckle and walked ahead towards a narrow doorway. "Enough of the weapons now. Come here in the gallery, I will show you the real paintings of the royals."
Anika's eyes lit up and Nandini had caught her eyes very well. She opened the door of the gallery and stepped aside to make way for the girls.
Anika stepped inside, and looked around the gallery. "Does the gallery have paintings of every member of the royal Family?"
This time Sonalika spoke. "We have almost everyone over here. My family is there, look!" She pointed ahead to the wall.
Sonalika was a baby in that painting. Dressed in a green lehenga and eyes laden with kajal, she looked absolutely cute in that painting. Since they were the ones born in the modern era, they could have simply got their photos framed, but they wanted to have their photos painted just like their ancestors so they got themselves painted and framed it in the gallery.
"Now come on Anika, let me introduce you to everyone." Nandini now stood beside her, leading the way.
"Wait! First show her the painting of Kavindra. We were talking about him and his story some nights before. This girl," Sonalika gestured towards Anika, "ended up dreaming about him, you know. Who knows by some weird magic of the universe, she could have seen the real him?"
Nandini's voice suddenly turned grave. "She saw the prince in her dream? So early?"
"So early?" Anika interjected. "What does that mean?"
"N-nothing. Come on, move ahead, my child." Nandini grabbed one end of her pallu and wrapped some part of it over her finger.
Sonalika did not pay attention to any of that. She was excited to check if by coincidence, her friend had seen the prince or not.
A sudden gasp brought Sonalika to focus around her surroundings. Anika's hands were over her face as if shielding herself away from something. She quickly went towards her friend and made her sit down on the floor.
"Are you okay, Anika? First you fell ill back home and now suddenly over here. All good?"
"I saw- fire. Sparks everywhere. A huge flame just blew over my face." Anika kept rubbing her face as she spoke. Sonalika turned towards Nandini and said, "Get a glass of water for her please. I think she is really unwell."
Nandini hurriedly walked outside. Sonalika rubbed Anika's back gently as she slowly began to compose herself. She took deep breaths and rubbed her temples frequently. Finally gaining some strength to speak, she asked, "Sona, please can you get crocin from my bag? That might help this headache."
Sonalika quickly left to fetch Anika's tablets. Alone, Anika made another attempt to look at the painting of the prince. It felt puzzling that just after hearing his story, everything felt weird around her.
'First, a dream then a vision and I unknowingly play music from the same vision and now I see a fireball over my face. Was I related to this prince in my past life,' she muttered in annoyance. 'Jabse malum chala hai iske bare mein tabse sab ulta sidha hi ho raha hai.'
True she was annoyed, but one glance at the prince's painting, everything faded away. The first time, her eyes landed over him, she saw fire around her and felt tremendously hot. That vision and fiery sensation lasted merely a few seconds, but were enough to fatigue the mind.
The prince in the painting stood elegantly, a small smile on his lips, unlike the other royals who looked stoic, with no smile or any expression on their faces. His small smile for no reason made Anika feel peace. Her headache lessened a bit. Kavindra was dressed in a white kurta that reached to his shins. His right hand held a white lotus while the other hand rested over a long white stool that was very well carved and designed with precious jewels. The painting had a lot of white in it. The prince himself was decked in white.
His face was to the front which again was unlike the other paintings where everyone looked to their side or to the corners.
"He must have been a rebel it seems," said Anika with a smile.
The painter had done a very commendable job. Looking at the prince, she felt as if she was at ease. The tender look of the prince reminded her of the gentle rain that falls at nights. Even from a painting, Anika could feel that the prince must have been a very approachable and a friendly being.
"Anika, here's your glass of water." Anika jumped a little on hearing Nandini's voice beside her.
"When did you come in?" She asked, taking the glass from her.
"Umm.. just now?"
"Ani, take your tablet. I even got your purse with me." Sonalika barged inside the gallery.
Anika quickly swallowed the tablet and looked at Sonalika. "I guess, Sona, your Kavindra is affecting me. First the vision and now this."
"The vision?" Both Nandini and Sonalika asked, their eyebrows raised in question.
Anika gulped her water slowly while trying to figure out an acceptable answer for both the women. "Vision? Did I say vision?" Nandini nodded at her.
"Oh, hehe, it was related to the project. I have a vision plan for my project. Nothing much." Sonalika passed a dubious look, but stayed silent.
Nandini casted one final look at Kavindra. Nobody noticed her smile at the painting. Nobody noticed her finger movements under the edge of her pallu that was tied to her finger.
"I think food will solve everything now. You girls come to the dining room within fifteen minutes while I set up the Royal Odia cuisine," Nandini said. Her index finger was still moving in circles under her pallu but none of the girls noticed it.
She then walked away, leaving Sonalika and Anika in the gallery. Sonalika glanced at the painting once again and then at her friend.
What was going on with her friend? This wasn't a case of being too involved or obsessed in a princely story. Something else was at play.

Nandini and other staff members pulled out chairs for both Sonalika and Anika. The chairs were too cushiony for Anika, who felt that she could even sink in them while eating.
An old lady around her fifties arrived with a large bowl of some brown coloured sweet dish and placed it on the table. "Eita hela ama Rasabali." (This is our Rasabali.)
The round reddish brown sweet was coated in thick flavoured milk, garnished with nuts and kesar that made Anika lick her lips. Another helper began serving the sweets to the girls while other mouth watering dishes arrived.
There was machha ghanta, a deliciously tempting fish curry served with hot steamed rice. A small bowl sized serving arrived for Kanika, a traditionally prepared sweet pulao that was also a part of the chappan bhog offered to the favourite deity of Odisha, Lord Jagganatha.
Two tiny white bowls were brought in that contained aambo khatta (mango khatta). Anika dipped her finger into it and licked it. The taste made her smile.
Sonalika, smiled and said, "Ruk jaa aur bhi hai."
"Aur kitna hai bhai? Itna toh aaram se ho jayega," Anika said, after breaking out from the rich taste of her khatta.
A pot arrived with steaming Pilaf. The golden brown colour of the rice mixed with the aroma of spices made Anika want to gorge on the meals already, but she waited patiently for all the dishes to arrive.
Finally, her wait was over when she was served two large Pahala Rasagulla. Sonalika immediately popped that white delicacy in her mouth and closed her eyes. Anika on the hand squeezed the white ball to see how much chasni they were giving out.
Nandini after ensuring that all the dishes were served began to speak. "Now, a good meal will take all your tiredness away Anika along with causing a riot in your tastebuds. Call me once after you are done with your meals. I will escort you to your rooms."
Every helper and all the staff members soon left away to let the girls enjoy their lunch. One of the windows was left open letting some cool breeze pass inside the hall.
Anika was about to stuff her rasgulla in her mouth when a sudden gust of wind passed by her. The wind tickled her neck and blew some stray hair strands by her ears. Immediately she looked back towards the window.
Nothing.
The trees outside were still as a statue. Not a leaf moved an inch. It was quite peculiar here. She gulped her rasgulla and asked Sonalika, "Sona, did you feel the wind?"
"Wind?"
"Yes, abhi ekdum zorr se hawa andar aaya na." What on earth is going around me? Anika wondered.
"I think you really need a good rest. Jaldi khana khatam kar. Nandini will show you the roomroom and you get some rest." Sonalika's face soon turned to a frown as worry etched her face. Things were going very wrong and strange after she told her story about that prince.
"Anika," Sona turned a glance at her friend's hair, "why is there a black burnt rose on your hair?"
She shook her head and the rose fell on the table beside her plate. Her fingers ran over the coarse petals of the rose. Some of the petals even crumbled into small black bits under her fingers.
Somewhere in the dark ruins of the once glorious palace, a finger plucked a string of a partially burnt veena.
