I did not ask for leave. Our daughters were born in 1978 and 1980, and it simply was not done. It would have been the same as asking for time off to play golf every day for three months.
I was somewhat relieved that I wouldn’t have to be at home all day, every day, helping take care of this little creature. That was my wife’s job, and I thought it would be like the show “Leave It to Beaver,” where I went off to work and came home to dinner and my new family. In fact, I was coming home to a woman completely burned out and half-terrified that she was doing everything wrong. This led to anger and disharmony between us; I couldn’t (wouldn’t?) understand what the problem was. Dinner often ended up being eaten by myself, as the baby was already in bed and my wife was locked in the bedroom crying.
Our daughters now have children, the youngest of which is about to turn 1. They and their husbands have the incredible good fortune of working for employers who provide extensive parental leave as a benefit and have enjoyed extended paid time off. They have something my wife and I did not have when they were born and, to be honest, something the larger corporate culture told me I did not deserve.

Eleanor Davis - The Hard Tomorrow
Tumblr media
I’m not sure who recommended this, but I’m thinking it was @iron_spike on twitter. Totally great experience for me, including a gut punch at one point that had me put the thing down and decide I should take a day and absorb what I’d read and come back the next day to read the rest. I can’t remember another time that’s happened to me with a graphic novel.

can we just talk for a second about how insane the 1950 best actress oscar nominee lineup was. GLORIA SWANSON as NORMA DESMOND in SUNSET BOULEVARD! BETTE DAVIS as MARGO CHANNING in ALL ABOUT EVE! anne baxter also in all about eve! eleanor parker in the pretty fucking gay women-in-prison noir caged (also feat. agnes moorehead)! which i wish i'd remembered to propagandize about before we lost her in round 2! (per wikipedia the studio originally wanted bette davis and joan crawford for it "but Davis declined the role, suspecting it to have objectionable homosexual content.") and JUDY HOLLIDAY (also lost from us to the shadow realm already, alas) in BORN YESTERDAY, who i do not begrudge winning over the rest of this bonkers collection of talent because judy holliday is fucking wonderful
:D
Bette Davis vs Gloria Swanson
Anne Baxter vs Waheeda Rehman
Eleanor Parker vs Audrey Hepburn
Agnes Moorehead vs Chelo Alonso
RIP to Judy Holliday, good enough for the Academy but not for the hot vintage electorate & kicked from the tournament in Round 2.

I am amazed at how I managed to avoid spoilers for this show.
I binged the entire thing last night (how else would you do it) - and even though I saw where episode 13 was going, I still cried my eyes out.
This one hurt.

@estrellami-1 sorry if I tag you in a bunch of shit I’m just going through my google docs rn to see what is post-able, lmao
(So this is a bit old, but I read through it and it seemed….okay? I have…basically 28000 words worth of writing for these characters, but I changed the plot and stuff. It’s unfinished, and I don’t think it ever will BE finished, but I might post some of it here, too. It was my NaNoWriMo project, but it was too light and soft for my liking, lmao)

Eleanore could practically sense Ethan’s annoyance before she heard it, but she was too busy trying to tie the back of her dress to look over at him. Her hands kept fumbling, dropping the string several times, and she began to wonder why she had even picked an open back dress with the stupid tie-around cross.
“We have to leave in two minutes, Ella, come on.” Ethan muttered, dropping down onto the chair next to her, his black boots resting on the coffee table. She had never seen him wearing so much hairspray and jewelry before, and honestly, it was kind of impressive how many necklaces he could wear at once—all silver chains and crosses that she had never seen him wear around the house before. His leather pants looked wildly uncomfortable, and his shirt was unbuttoned even though it was February.
“How come you’re not yelling at Sid to hurry up? He’s been doing his makeup for an hour.” She said, sending a pointed glare at Sid's back, who was, in fact, still leaning so close to the mirror that his nose was almost touching it. Come to think of it, doing up the back of her dress would’ve been so much easier if she had a mirror, but the white powder and face-paint that Sid was using would’ve been very visible against the black fabric of the dress.
“Well, maybe because Sid is doing something actually important!” Ethan retorted, rolling his eyes and leaning half out of the chair to catch his reflection in what was visible of the mirror as his hands combed through his very-stiff hair.
“This is important.” Eleanore snapped, throwing her hands in the air and dropping the ties completely. “I wanted to wear the fucking outfit I had on for the album cover last year, but you said it should be formal because this is for your first EP!” She scrunched her hands up and crossed them over her chest. This was just great.
It was perfect timing, really, that Rowan then decided to walk out into the living room, his long brown hair back in a perm in the way that he knew Eleanore hated, all scrunched up and curled, his bangs falling in his eyes, instead of the waves it was supposed to be. The ones that curled around his shoulders perfectly. But yet again, he lived to torment her.
She narrowed her eyes slightly, and he merely tugged at a lock of scrunched hair and shrugged, flashing her a smile. “Need any help, princess?”
Her face reverted back to a glare as she looked him up and down. “I thought you said that outfit was stupid.” She muttered, waving a lazy hand over in his direction. She had picked out that outfit for him, a button up black shirt with flowing sleeves that was only slightly see through, and normal dress pants, because no way in hell was Ethan going to let either of them go out how they normally dressed. So he would just have to suffer the prison that was formality with her.
“It is, but jeans are not a part of the dress code for this, so here we are.” He crossed the room to her and gently pushed her shoulders to spin her around while he did up the back of her dress. When she turned back to face him, he had a sort of surprised look painted over him, like he had expected her to swat his hands away the second he touched her. Never.
“How do I look?” She asked quietly, tugging the neckline of the dress a bit higher, and pulling the skirt down so that the slit in it sat lower. This dress was a fucking nightmare, meant for anyone but her. It was too-big in all the wrong places, bunching slightly at her hips, the slit riding up her thigh to show the bottom of the shorts that she insisted she wore against Ethan’s better judgment (his only concern being that you could see the outline of the waistband pressed against the skirt), and around the neckline where it hung so low that she couldn’t even wear a bra with it. And the stupid off-the-shoulder sleeves sagged down a bit. It looked like it was meant to be this big on purpose and she hated it.
Rowan was about to give his opinion, which would have probably been some sappy poetic bullshit just to make her feel better so that they could leave already, but Ethan cut in with a raised eyebrow, standing up and looking her up and down. “Like a slut. You really couldn’t have found a better dress?”
She glared at him, seemed to be doing that a lot more recently, and crossed her arms over her chest, sagging down slightly as she muttered. “You wanted formal, so I found formal. Your outfit isn’t any better. Remind me again, which girl will you be bringing home tonight—?”
Ethan huffed and leaned in slightly. “No girl, asshole. You asked for our opinions, and I gave it. God forbid I speak my mind in this fucking house.”
And there it was. He always got like this before a show or an interview, except Eleanore hadn’t ever been along to see it. He never really got mad at her at home, seeing as he didn’t have any reason to, and she knew she was being pushy by arguing with him, but she didn’t fucking care anymore.
“I’ll go change—“ She started, before Rowan took her hands in his and shook his head, his bangs falling in his eyes again, and she would’ve reached up to move them if her wrists weren’t trapped between his fingers.
“Sweetheart. You look fine—fucking etheral. I—fucking divine. The dress is fine. It’s lovely. You picked a great one. I promise.” He assured her, running his hands up and down her arms to tug the sleeves up a bit higher. “Now can we please get going before Alice murders us for being late?” Him and his fucking dramatics. Still, she sighed and shrugged.
“It’s Ethan’s night, though, and he’s right—“
“No no no, none of that. Shush. You look radiant, my dear, let’s go.” He muttered, moving his hands to her waist as he gently pulled her to the door, fixing the bunched up fabric and moving the waistline of the dress a bit lower on her hips so that the shorts were no longer visible. He smiled and dropped his hands from her waist and opened the door for her, giving her a theatrical bow and a stupid smile. “Mae’s in the car already, I’ll be right down. I just need to find one of my rings.”
God, he was such a bad liar. Still, she nodded and let him close the door behind her. She stood there for a moment, his quiet voice carrying through the wood. “For the love of god, Davis, don’t call your cousin a slut.” He pleaded, sighing, and she knew him well enough to know that he was most likely tugging at his hair while he said it, trying to keep his hands busy so that he didn’t wave them around. “She has low self esteem as it is. Do you want to leave or not, because you are not helping.”
And Ethan was most likely rolling his eyes and helping Sid finish his makeup so that they could leave. “I’ll stop when you quit being so touchy with her. I swear, if we hadn't been here you would’ve had your hands up her skirt in seconds. And don’t even try to fucking lie about it, you know it’s true.”
Eleanore held her breath, her arms wrapping around her chest. He wouldn’t have, would he? They didn’t like each other like that. He was the only one who knew she liked girls, he wouldn’t do that to her. Ethan didn’t know what the fuck he was talking about.

Have you watched the First Lady series on Showtime?
I tried but could only get through an episode and a half. Viola Davis is one of the most incredible actresses I've ever seen in just about everything she's ever done -- her work in Fences is one of the greatest performances I've ever watched in a film -- but she makes some really weird choices as Michelle Obama and it goes from weird to unintentionally funny to unwatchable very quickly. And just when you think that that was the low point, Gillian Anderson shows up playing Eleanor Roosevelt if Eleanor Roosevelt had a stroke every time she speaks. It's basically the same way she played Margaret Thatcher in The Crown (also a terrible performance, I don't care what awards they gave her for it -- it was not good).
From what I was able to get through, The First Lady was a very bad show. And believe me...I'm not picky when it comes to shows based on historical figures, especially when it features the Presidency. I'll watch just about anything and usually enjoy it because I'm such a history nerd. It's always easy to watch. But this show was a tough watch.
They should just do a standalone Betty Ford movie with Michelle Pfeiffer, though. She was solid and Betty Ford is a remarkable historical figure. So are Michelle Obama and Eleanor Roosevelt, of course, but it just shows that even normally great actresses like Viola Davis and Gillian Anderson can have some rough days at the office.

Do revenge was SUCH A GOOD FUCKING MOVIE, 10/10 would recommend. The twists were crazy, like even when I thought I had gotten spoiled before I watched the movie, so I expected one twist, another twist came up and I was left shocked. And our MCs were such psychos, but like in the best way, and honestly? I loved it, I loved their fucked up actions and all the conniving and scheming and dhakdjakjfjsjd, pls watch :)
