old memories
In one of the few quiet moments at Spinner's End — and Tobias was was away from home — Eileen took out her old kit for potions and battered books and taught her son the art of potions.

Eileen Snape was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's when Severus was in his sixth year.
She was admitted to 'Saint Dymphna's Home For Wandering Minds'
Severus visited her every year at Christmas until the events of Chamber of Secrets.
Minerva McGonagall is the only one who knows about his mother.
After Severus's death, she couldn't face being the one to tell Eileen. Harry volunteered.
Eileen thought that Harry was her son and was delighted that he was visiting her again.
Not knowing what to do, Harry went along with her belief.

She was not pretty; she looked simultaneously cross and sullen, with heavy brows and a long, pallid face.

Eileen Prince is very interesting to me, I wish we knew more about her and her relationship with Severus, but also her past. I would like to think they had a good relationship but realistically it was most likely strained because of the abuse she/both of them faced at home, she was probably for the most part emotionally absent. And maybe in a way there's a parallel between her and Severus. What if she resented her son because she couldn't help but see her abuser in him (and she hated herself for feeling this way)? The same way Severus would later feel about Harry? What if he inherited his mother's anger

Concerning The Childhood Abuse Of Severus Snape:
Do you think Albus, Minerva, Horace or any of the Hogwarts staff knew about what Severus was going through at home? If they all did know, how do you think they've found out; through Lily's confessions, or Severus returning to the school with cuts, bruises, and black eyes?
Granted, in the 70's people did little to nothing when knowing a child was being abused. But, Albus and Minerva are Gryffindors who valued bravery and standing up for others. You'd think they (especially Minerva) would've send a howler or two to Eileen and Tobias.
Plus, Eileen was a Hogwarts student, herself; she would've known Albus, Minerva, Horace and the rest of the teachers. As a result, the Hogwarts staff would've been horrified to find their former student being with an abuser-Wizard or Muggle. While they would've been cross with how Eileen's been negligent of Severus, they would've still tried to help them get out of Tobias's grasps. Yet, Eileen, like many abuse victims, would refuse the help and stay with the abuser.
Rambling aside, but what do you think may've happened? And, come to think of it, do you think Lily and Petunia's parents tried to interfere too?

Severus's life if Tobias was an actual decent father and husband headcanons
When he finds out that Eileen and Severus are wizards, he takes a minute to take in the information (i feel like he is more the religious type) and even goes to church.
At first, he was angry that his own wife would hide that from him, but after much time and talking with a reasonable, open-minded, understanding priest, he went home and he and Eileen had a long talk.
He is a hard worker at the factory. He goes to work early but comes home late, and Eileen always makes him breakfast, lunch, and dinner and barely drinks but still drinks every now and then.
After Eileen told Tobias everything, he told her to educate him on the Wizarding world so he could have a better grasp of it.
After Tobias was educated on the Wizarding world, he did not like how relationships like his and Eileen's were looked down upon, which made him worried for Severus, especially when he got accepted into Hogwarts.
Severus still wears hand me downs but he does get some new clothes since they don't have a lot of money.
Tobias would be that husband and father that would glare or yell at someone who gave them looks or said/whispered something about them.
Tobias would not be afraid to fight somebody, magic or not. (YOU DO NOT MESS WITH THIS MAN'S FAMILY)
Whenever Severus comes back and he is acting different, he notices. He knows what being bullied looks like, and he talks with Severus about it
Tobias teaches Severus how to defend himself and shows him a couple of moves he learned in the military (the man obviously served)
Eileen would be more involved in Severus's life instead of being afraid.
When the "prank" happened, they immediately found out and gave Dumbledore h3ll for this. And they immediately pull Severus from hogwarts (but not before Tobias is about to give the marauders an old school a$$-whooping)
Eileen and Tobias transferred him to Durmstrang, where they kept a close eye on him (they are helicopter parents now, and u can't tell me otherwise)
Severus obviously noticed the struggle that his parents were facing, not just prejudice but the money struggle. So, growing up, he would always help his mom around the house, help cook and clean, and even sell some potions here and there. (He sells his potions to Tobias's work buddies)
Severus gives his dad potions to help his health and even casts a few spells on him to help him at work (Tobias even after all these years is still not used to it but is impressed by his son's brain)
When Severus graduated, a lot of potion masters wanted him, but he knew he couldn't afford it. So his parents both worked to scrounge him enough money to pay for his apprenticeship (severus helped, he's not letting his parents do all the work)
Severus's summer job as a teenager was helping out at either his father's factory or working at a bar
When Severus came out that he liked both girls and boys, both his parents weren't surprised. They found out a looooong time ago and had their time to process it. And they learned to accept him and his Sexuality in their own way.
Severus is a potion master, has his own apothecary, and his parents couldn't be prouder. He also has a medical and chemist degree. (So if anyone needs a doctor, he's your guy)
When Eileen passed away, Tobias was distant from Severus, but eventually, he learned to be close with his own son again for his wife's sake.
Tobias and severus visit Eileen's grave every year on her birthday.
After Tobias passed, Severus visits their grave in his free time just to talk to them and tell them about his life.
Severus is happier, calmer, and less depressed but still our favorite Sarcastic sharptounged Slytherin
He wouldn't join the deatheaters unless they threatened his parents. He would protect them with his life
Hope you guys love this little headcanons. Enjoy

Rickmas 2023: Day 6. Out of Care | Snape & Eileen
Tumblr media
Read now on Ao3 or below the cut:
Christmas was a time for family, so everyone said, but to Severus that only meant misery. Quiet, tense dinners in the Snape household were the norm; it was no different on Christmas Day, except with even heavier drinking from his father and maybe the odd card from a distant relative Severus had never met.
But there was one thing he loved about Christmas. Every Christmas Eve, his father spent the day at the pub with his mates for a “boys Christmas,” and his mother took him to the Christmas Market in Diagon Alley.
It was the one day a year that Severus got to go to Diagon Alley as a child. He and his mother would wander the streets, looking at the trinkets on sale that they could never afford, smelling the food and drink on offer, and some years Eileen even managed to save up enough spare change to buy Severus a treat.
He also got to visit the shops, to look in wonder at the apothecary and the bookshop. Severus was forbidden to go down Knockturn Alley, but that just made it all the more enticing, and Eileen more than once turned around to find him gone, running after him only to find him talking to some cloaked figure down the forbidden alleyway.
At Hogwarts, Severus learned enough of potions and magic to offer an under the table potion brewing service at school, and he saved every knut of it for Christmas time. For years Eileen had been saving to buy her son a cinnamon-dusted hot chocolate at the Christmas Market every year, but now he was finally able to buy one for her. He treated her to sweets too, and a gift, and she begged that it was too much for a son to treat his mother, but his stubbornness won out and for once in her life Eileen Snape smiled.
When Severus brewed his first successful Amortentia, it smelled like the old books of the library, a vanilla blancmanche, and cinnamon-dusted hot chocolate. He made a fortune selling love potions that year, especially with the school’s winter ball coming up, and for once he was looking forward to going home, because he would finally be able to treat his mother as she deserved.
It was only two days before the Hogwarts Express would take him home that Professor Slughorn pulled Severus aside after Potions class and delivered him the news that his mother had been found dead in her home, the muggle police were treating it as suspicious, his father was nowhere to be found and did he have somewhere else to go for the holidays or would he like to stay in the castle?
Although between a castle empty of Marauders and a home with his father he’d prefer the former, he had every year previous chosen the latter for the sake of his mother. He couldn’t bear the thought of her alone with Tobias at Christmas when he was at his drunkest, and he didn’t want to miss out on treating her at the Christmas Market.
But there was nothing to go back to now. Christmas was family, and as far as Severus was concerned, his family consisted of himself and his mother - and now, with her gone, he was alone.
When he told Lily why he wasn’t coming home for Christmas, she showed him pity and sorrow, and though he would have said yes in an instant the invitation to spend Christmas with the Evanses was never extended.
And so Severus opted to stay at Hogwarts. For two weeks the castle was almost empty, save for him, one Slytherin girl a year above him, and two first-year Ravenclaws. There was a peacefulness to it - no Potter lurking around the corner to ambush him, no giggling girls gossiping in the library, no boisterous Gryffindors running down the corridors. It was everything Severus had dreamed of at school.
And yet, he couldn’t bring himself to enjoy it. He didn’t care for Christmas anymore. The one spark of joy that it had brought - that one trip a year with his mother - was gone with her, and he felt empty in the moments he was too exhausted to feel angry.
On Christmas Eve, Severus got out of bed only because his stomach had begun to growl at him for not eating for three days straight. He pulled back the curtain of his bed and turned towards the bedside table to retrieve his wand… and almost knocked over a steaming mug of hot chocolate.
He paused, his hand frozen in mid-reach for his wand. He looked around the room, as if someone would step out of the shadows and reveal their mysterious hot chocolate ways. But he was alone, just as he had been since the end of term.
He picked up his wand and cast charms on the mug, but he found no evidence of magic other than a warming spell to stop it getting cold.
The mug even looked the same as the ones from the market stall. In fact, if he wasn’t mistaken, it was the same one as from the market stall. The smell was unmistakable, the colour, even the way the cinnamon was sprinkled on top in the shape of a Christmas tree.
Severus picked up the mug and cautiously took a sip. It was the same!
On the table beneath where the mug had sat was a slip of parchment. In unfamiliar handwriting, it said:
Severus - Keep her alive.
That was it. No signature, no clue of who his mysterious benefactor was.
Keep her alive. That was what the note said. His mystery barista had only one message for him, one they felt the need to deliver anonymously, and he hoped they weren’t watching him now to see the tears falling down his face.
Whoever they were, they were right. He had to keep her alive. She was half of him, and he owed her everything. Next year he would go to the market, and he would have the hot chocolate with cinnamon, and he would remember her.
But he still never really cared for Christmas.

- Tobias Snape was a squib
- he knew all about the magical world and hated it for the way it had treated him.
- he'd argue with Eileen about magic and the magical world
- he loved his son and wanted to protect him but his lack of magical ability made him ashamed and fearful that he couldn't protect Severus.
- Severus never told him but as things turned sour at Hogwarts, being at home without magic became a refuge of sorts

Tom Riddle (Slytherin 5th year, Prefect) and Minerva "Mad Min" McGonagall (Gryffindor 4th year, Chaser who regularly takes on Bludgers with her bare hands) had very little in common beyond agreeing that Eileen Prince (Slytherin 4th year, Captain of the Hogwarts Gobstones Club) was the most annoying person in the whole school (and likely the whole world)
This was just an excuse to draw the last panel, Eileen being an obnoxious 14 year old too obsessed with Gobstones to care about Tom Riddle's blatantly suspicious behavior was just bonus silliness.
