'Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans' - No, it is Not a Remake
‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans’ – No, it is Not a Remake
Alright, let’s get this out of the way; Werner Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” is not a remake of Abel Ferrara’s 1992 film “Bad Lieutenant” which, as a friend of mine from high school pointed out “made ‘Taxi Driver’ look like ‘Alice in Wonderland!’” The only thing these films have in common is they have a main character who is a police lieutenant with serious gambling and drug…

RIP Edward R. Pressman.
Prolific producer who brought an impactful, diverse catalog of nearly 100 films to the screen over the course of 50+ years.
He was a maverick icon who helped discover and showcase the work of young directors like Oliver Stone, Brian De Palma, Terence Malick, Sam Raimi and Kathryn Bigelow.

In memory of Edward R. Pressman, movie producer and patron of the arts
Tumblr media
I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Ed Pressman. Ed was a friend and a collaborator of mine for many years. I like to think of him as a patron of the arts because he supported a lot of young filmmakers like me as we were just coming into the industry, and he wanted nothing in return other than hard work and appreciation for the effort he put forth setting up pitches with execs and financiers and meetings with actors and actresses. During the most difficult spell of my career, when I needed it the most, he was there with support- both financially and otherwise. It’s not an exaggeration to say Ed kept me alive, kept my family fed, my bills paid and my mortgage paid with options on numerous scripts I had written on spec (Splatter Sisters, Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’) and with rewriting / ghost-writing jobs for big budget projects (Beijing Bullet- pictured above with director Rob Cohen at a meeting in Beverly Hills).
I enjoyed spending time with Ed and hearing him tell stories about filmmakers I idolized - like Oliver Stone. Once before a meeting at a private club in Manhattan (jackets required) he told me how he discovered Arnold Schwarzenegger and gave him his first big break in Conan. He knew I loved hip hop and would tell me hilarious stories of smoking weed with DMX- apparently DMX said Ed was the only person he’d ever met who could smoke him under the table. And of course I picked Ed’s brain almost constantly about Terrance Malick and what it was like to work with a living legend.
Ed Pressman was absolutely a one of a kind. No film producer has ever come before quite like him, nor will ever come after. He deserves to be celebrated. If there were more producers like Ed out there today, independent film in general would be better off. He was unselfish, generous with his time and money and an old fashioned fan of movies who was in it for all the right reasons. He will be missed. My condolences to his wife Annie and son Sam Pressman. With love - ABL.

BILL SKARSGÅRD
The Crow reboot package lived up to pre-market expectations and proved to be a standout from FilmNation’s packed Cannes slate as heavyweight international buyers snapped up rights to the upcoming revenge thriller.
Bill Skarsgård from the It franchise and Deadpool 2 will star alongside British singer-songwriter FKA twigs for Rupert Sanders, whose directing credits include Snow White And The Huntsman, Ghost In The Shell and Foundation. Sanders will direct from a screenplay by Zach Baylin, the Oscar-nominated writer of King Rchard and the upcoming Creed III.
Closed deals include Entertainment Film for the UK, Leonine for Germany, Roadshow Films for Australia and New Zealand, Eagle for Italy, Nordisk for Scandinavia, California Filmes for Latin America, Tri Pictures for Spain, and Moviecloud for Taiwan.
In further trading, rights have gone for Middle East (Italia), Eastern Europe (Vertical), Benelux (WWE), Thailand (M Pictures), Malaysia (Square Box), Singapore (Shaw), Portugal (Pris), Switzerland (Ascot Elite), Greece (Tanweer), South Africa (Empire), India (PVR), Turkey (Yeni Bir), and Baltics (Acme).
Production is anticipated to begin in Europe this summer on the reimagining of the cult character based on James O’Barr’s graphic novel. Alex Proyas directed the 1994 feature version about a man who returns from the dead to avenge his murder and that of his fiancée.
Producers are Molly Hassell, Victor Hadida – whose Metropolitan will distribute The Crow in France – as well as John Jencks, and Edward R. Pressman, who produced the 1994 original. CAA Media Finance represents US rights.
Sanders is represented by CAA, Grandview and Independent Talent Group. Skarsgard is represented by WME, Magnolia Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein. FKA twigs is represented by UTA.
FilmNation’s Cannes slate includes Vatican conspiracy thriller Conclave to star Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini; Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu and Djimon Hounsou in diver thriller Last Breath; Michael Keaton starring in and directing the noir Knox Goes Away; and Paul Greengrass-Benedict Cumberbatch peasant revolt drama The Hood.
As previously reported Apple snapped up worldwide rights during the market to sci-fi romance package Fingernails starring Riz Ahmed and Jessie Buckley.

The Best Picture Oscar My Way (2000-2022)
After doing this list, I suddenly got inspired to do this sort of thing for some of the other Academy Award categories. For this project I got the following things to say:
Many of the win/nomination changes will be based more on some infamous or otherwise perceived snubs (i.e. Martin Scorsese needing to wait until The Departed for a Best Director win). In general, the changes are based on what the frequent consensus seems to be from what I’ve seen.
I may STILL keep a few of those same snubs if it simply lines up more with the film’s initial reactions at the time (i.e. Clockwork Orange).
There are some changes that the Oscars applied to certain categories over the years (i.e. Sound Mixing & Sound Editing becoming just Best Sound). For this list’s sake, I’ll apply some of my OWN cases of said changes applying (such as the Best Picture expansion from 5 to 10 occurring earlier since, in hindsight, they probably should’ve done that sooner). In case of that change, I’ll just apply it earlier (starting in 1997).
Said expansion has resulted in no less than 8 nominations in Best Picture at a time, so that’ll be my minimum (until 2021, where it was officially made the set amount no questions asked).
Gonna try to keep EGOTs as best as I can. Luckily for this category, there’s currently only one that’ll matter.
More inclusive wins (POC; LGBT) will be more likely to stay. There may be some exceptions after I’ve already made my own inclusive alternatives.
For the early years where Best Picture went to the studio instead (for some godforsaken reason), I’ll just pretend that’s not the case.
Due to some weird, borderline convoluted rules with Best International Feature Film (Mainly that this category doesn’t require US theater plays, but most other ones do), I’ll often go off of an eligible film’s year of original release unless they managed nominations the following year (City of God; Spirited Away)
For Best Picture, I’m only gonna list the nominated producer for newly added films (here’s the Wikipedia page for the rest). I will mostly go with the ones credited as “produced by” or “p.g.a.” (if the latter is shown) on IMDB as the nominees. Limit is five.
Italicized film titles are the ones I added. Bold ones are winners.

How do you honor an indie icon? If it's the late producer Ed Pressman, you have popcorn at the Paris Theater with clips from iconic films and speeches from countless collaborators from five decades, and then cap the event with cocktails. Edward R. Pressman, who passed 2 weeks ago at 79, made his name backing and championing filmmakers. His recent NYT obit had the headline, “Edward Pressman, Film Producer Who Bet on Unsung Talent, Dies at 79.” What a legacy. Pressman produced 100+ movies over 50+ years. The first time we met I was in awe, afraid to say too much because he was such a big figure. But Ed made me feel at ease and over the years I realized I didn’t have to say a lot to connect with him. At the Paris today, Ed was remembered as a man of few words but a producer who had a huge impact. Ed Pressman was born in Manhattan in the '40s & as a kid sold popcorn at his uncle’s movie theater. Today his brother Jim shared tender tales of his older brother showing him the ropes when they were growing up. It seems like Ed showed lots of folks the ropes, working with many first-timers over the years. There was Malick’s first film, “Badlands” and also Bigelow’s “Blue Steel” as well as David Byrne’s directorial debut, “True Stories.” Ed is known for letting filmmaker’s shine. “Sometimes,” he once told the The Times, as a producer, “the best thing to do is nothing.” Ed had “no distinction between high and low art,” Mary Harron said today. The two made “American Psycho” and “Daliland” together. In a video, “Psycho” star Christian Bale referenced Ed's soft spoken nature saying that while he was quiet, he made, “loud stories and loud films,” adding, “He loved vouching for people who were untested.” Ed’s family and colleagues vowed to forge ahead in his name. “We will continue working, and making movies in honor of Ed,” son Sam shared, “Part of Ed’s genius is that he loved filmmakers and he loved artists and let them do what they wanted to do.” My takeaway from today’s sweet memorial tribute to Ed Pressman is that, right until the end, he believed in the power and awesomeness of movies. “Every day on a set is a miracle,” Edward R. Pressman famously said. (at The Paris Theater) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoLz4oxuHSG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The prolific producer died peacefully Tuesday night at a Los Angeles hospital surrounded by his loved ones, including members of his family and his company, his son, Sam, a Pressman Film vp production, told The Hollywood Reporter. “He was working up until the last moment…
